The Coaches Breakfast on 93.9 The Score is brought to you by Lost Pizza, John C. Saylor Attorney at Law, The Courier Journal, Miller's Place, North Alabama Boney Joint Clinic, Southern Pride Pest Control and Bank Independent. Now live from the North Alabama Boney Joint Clinic, here's your host, Kevin Johnson. Top of the morning to you on this October morning and welcome to you listeners and welcome to Esau Esau, who has made its arrival in the Shoals area and in North Alabama. Hopefully not with a big, big punch like they had down south, but I hope that you're doing well this morning and getting your day off to a good start and hopefully this weather will move through pretty quickly today and by this evening it'll be clear for that Alabama-Georgia game, which you'll hear right here on 93.9 The Score. We're Kevin Johnson, glad to be with you for the Coaches Breakfast from the North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic. Whoo, everybody take a deep breath out of the storm and everything else going on. Lots of moving parts going on, but we got it through the high school weekend and that's a great thing. Actually, a couple of games been moved to Monday in South Alabama. I know Orange Beach High School moved their game to Monday. Three games were moved to week 11, which is at the end of the season. So there was some movement that had to be done, but hats off, and we'll talk about that in a minute, to all those who got the games in for high school football because they're so important to the high school. Well, students and athletics and everything else about it, so hats off to all of them and what a great, great night of high school football it was. I almost had a little weird feeling. I don't know, maybe it was just me, but maybe because of the weather coming in, because of the storm, just you had this eerie feeling, and sure enough, there were some games last night that had a little eerie feeling about it as well. We'll talk about a few of those in just a few minutes, but here's three things that KJ saw last night through the state of Alabama in high school football. Number one, Hoover Bucks are three and five. Listen, folks, that may not mean much for the Sholes area, but in Hoover High School is the premier team for years. They are three and five on the season and probably, most assuredly almost, not going to make the postseason for the first time since 1999. They have made the playoffs every year in the years of 2000, but 1999 was the last time they didn't make the playoffs, and right now, they're probably most definitely looking from the outside, looking in to the top four teams. After they lost last night to Vestavia Hills in the rain of Isis, the rain was coming down pretty good in the second half, and the third quarter, it was a three to zero game with Hoover winning, and so Vestavia lines up to attempt a 48-yard field goal to tie it up. Instead, they run a fake field goal, throw a Hail Mary to the goal line, and Vestavia Rebel kid catches it, and they win the game six to three over Hoover. Hoover most likely out of the playoffs. What else did I see last night? Comeback City in North Alabama. Comeback City happened in two different places at least last night. One of those was in the Madison Bowl, well, not Madison Bowl, but a team from the county line, I should say, James Clemens Jets. They took on Spartman on the road at Spartman, were down, made a furious comeback, and with just under a minute to go, M.J. Gideon, one of the best running backs in North Alabama, breaks it in, scores a touchdown to give the Jets a two-point lead. Spartman would answer back, come down, attempt a 50-yard field goal that was just yards short, and James Clemens wins Class 6A Region 4 with that victory. I think it was 23-21 final score there with James Clemens knocking off Spartman last night. The other comeback city, it was the Austin Black Bears. The Austin Black Bears really were impressive last night for 10 minutes, but it was the only 10 minutes they needed to be impressed. The last 10 minutes of the game, they were trailing 21-3 to Hartzell on the road. Hartzell looked like they were about to pull a big upset and a huge win, but Austin woke up, got a touchdown, defense woke up, got a stop, and before you know it, the Black Bears had a chance to win the game late and drive it down and score with just under a minute to go and win the game over Hartzell last night, 24-21, which sets up a huge game this coming Friday night at Austin as they will play host to Florence, and a big game for both teams in that one. We'll hear that game right here on 93-9, the score. What else did the KJC last night, this weekend, moving parts, moving games, the logistics of it. That's what I want to talk about for a moment. Moving games in high school football is not easy. Most of the time we see there's a hurricane coming. Let's just move the game up to Thursday. That takes more than you realize. You have to get concession stands worked. You have to get the proper personnel there, referees. You have to get also to check with, especially with law enforcement to be there because you have to have all the law enforcement. There's a lot of moving parts to move a game from a Friday night to a Thursday night or vice versa. There's so many moving parts. And so when you hear that a game gets moved, I promise you behind the scenes, it is a ton of work on the administration, on the athletic department of every high school, no matter the size of the high school, to get a game from one day to another day. Hats off to so many teams that were able to pull that off to move games. And hats off to all those, especially law enforcement, who said, yeah, we'll come and work those games on Thursday, knowing that most of them would have to be out doing double duty for the hurricane coming in. So hats off to them for that. And also, many of them were very flexible. Teams last night in North Alabama moved games up an hour or two or three or four, knowing the rain might come in. These are things you have to do nowadays. These are things you just have to be flexible with. And obviously, the coaches did it and administration did it. So hats off to them. So those are some things K.J. saw last night in high school football. Let's talk about games played this weekend, give you some rundown of scores. Game on Thursday night, let's go Florence. Wins it 49-13 over East Limestone. Game played at Brawley Stadium. Also Friday night, as I said, Austin over Hartzell, 24-21. Gardendale over Cullman, 55-29. Phil Campbell was better than Tanner, 53-6. Randolph shuts out St. John's, Paul 48-0. Red Bay gets by Waterloo, 55-13. Good one here. Wilson has to get two defensive stops late, but they do. They are going to the playoffs for the first time in a while. Congratulations to Trey Lane and the Warriors. They knock off West Limestone, 14-7. Central goes up on the mountain, beats Carver Heights, 54-6. In a battle of the Wildcats, Lexington wins it 47-0 on the road at Winston County. Other scores. It's good over there. Keep an eye on them. Destra all over Ardmore at the state line as they win that one, 55-14. Russellville was in a fight last night. The Golden Tigers win it with defense last night, 17-7. A couple of interceptions were the one that sealed that. Meek over Belgrane, 24-13. Bob Jones had a hang on to a scrappy Hazel Green team last night, winning it 35-28. Grissom gets knocked down by Buckhorn. The Bucs win it 66-14. Cherokee gets shut out by Addison, 61-0. Clements over Elkmont, 20-13. Carver County on the road. Probably thought they might have had a little easier game, but J.B. Pennington brought it last night for a little while, but Carver County wins it 41-31. Other games. Curry gets by East Lawrence last night, 34-28. Coosa Christian over Decatur Heritage, 41-7. Columbia falls to Douglas, 54-7. Hensville falls to Etowah, 56-0. Haleville takes on the Hatton Hornets, and the Hornets sting them 42-13 to remain undefeated on this season. Gadsden City over Huntsville, 34-14. North Jackson big over DAR, 60-14. Brooks with a shutout over Lawrence County, 27-0. Westminster Christian travel all the way down to Auburn, I think, if I'm not mistaken, taking Lee Scott Academy, 49-6. Lee Scott wins that one. Marcelle big over Lindsey Lane last night, 52-6. Muscle shows with a shutout on homecoming of Decatur, 41-0. New Hope gets by Madison County, 40-13. And let's see if we get one more, a couple more scores in there if I can, the scores that we have from last night. Just a couple more to throw in here for you. Phillips falls to Hackelberg, 41-14. Rogers falls to Lauderdale County, 63-27. Faultville better than Sheffield, 34-22. James Clemens over Spartman, it was 30-28 was that final score, by the way. And Hoax Bluff gets by Vondemont, 29-28. Last night, Priceville falls to West Morgan, 65-22. And Shokes Christian fell to Whitesburg, 66-0. And Scottsboro shuts out Brewer, 55-0. That was just some of the scores from around the Shows area last night. Coming up, some of the coaches on this rainy, rainy Saturday morning. It's the coaches' breakfast. We're back in one minute. It's a rainy, rainy Saturday morning. We're having to scramble to get everything done. Coaches have come in, but they're just now getting here, so a little late getting started, but we're going to make it happen. I'm glad to be with us today, and I have the assistant coach of Brooks High School, Coach Brad Broadfoot, whose team last night gets a big win on the road, I believe it was, at Lawrence County 27-0. And, Coach, congratulations. First of all, did y'all make preparations maybe for possible rain coming up and not knowing what the weather might be? We really didn't. We got late word that maybe halftime the rain would come in. Just we went through our normal stuff. Lawrence County is a little different animal. Every week, I think we had six films on them, and every week they show up in something else. They run their plays. They just do it from different sets. So we just tell the kids, live by your rules. We'll find out on the first drive who they want to be tonight, and then we'll go from there. That is something, as a veteran coach, you've been around this while to say, hey, you can't always worry about what they're showing you to do. Sometimes you've got to just worry about your keys, as you said. That is something you preach fundamentally. Fundamentals is big at this time of year still, isn't it? And, like, we preach it the first day of the summer all the way through that all we've got to live by is our rules across the board. Yeah, that's really, as we speak with Coach Broadfoot of Brooks High School here, Brad Broadfoot. And, Coach, obviously you're on the defensive side and doing all this. You get a shutout last night. That's a big thing for your defense as well and for your team. Yes, sir. And we've given up more than we should this year in explosive plays and just kind of challenged them. It helped that Lawrence County tried to ground and pound it out. They got a tough little running back. But the offense got rolling pretty good, and kids know we feed them when they get a shutout too. You know, people will see records this time of year, and they go, oh, that team is this record, that team is that record. But as coaches, you watch film, you can say, I don't care if they're 1-6 or 2-8 or whatever. You start looking at records, but you watch film, you can see these teams have athletes. They have players. You have to always remind them, look, this guy can play right here, don't you? Absolutely. You have to, like, and at times you pick and choose what film you show them. Okay. And you show them that. But, like, and we told them all week going in, this is their, like, mathematically if they lose this game, they're done. Yeah. Like, playoff-wise. So we knew they were in a corner and they were going to come out swinging, and they did. Yeah, it was their playoff game last night, so you had to realize that. That's a tremendous point here by Brad Broadfoot, assistant coach at Brooks High School. His team wins it 27-0 last night over Lawrence County. And, Coach, you talked about you pick and choose the films. You show the team. Early in the year, you don't have that luxury. You have just one or two films. But this is the time of year. You say, hey, we want you to see. And sometimes what teams did in game one is totally different than what they're doing in game six and seven. Absolutely. And by pick and choose, like, you know, like with Deschler that we got coming up, you don't want to, like, you don't want to get them big-eyed with all the films. So you pick and choose their basics. And with Lawrence County and other teams, you want to show them their best stuff. Yeah. And just so that we get the same thing to the table and it comes back to rules. Who played well for you on defense last night? Bam Campbell flies around. Max Fedak played well. And, like, what the average people don't see is just like offense. The linemen don't get any love. But, you know, we've got a nose taking a double team all night. We've got five techniques getting washed. But their job is to keep those big kids off of Bam Campbell. Yeah. So he can run. He's probably in about 15, 16 tackles last night. But we kind of attribute those across the board. That's a great point. You know, these big guys don't get the credit. And they say, well, they only had one tackle in the whole game. But you as a coach know that they did their job. It shows up on that backside with those linebackers. And that's a big thing. Do you talk to them about that, not to worry about stats, but just do your job? Absolutely. And we'll throw a tackle at them sometimes. Yeah. Hey, we saw that. Yeah. It was close enough. You were in the vicinity there. I like that. That's right. Brad Broadfoot of Brooks High School. And, Coach, you turn the page now. Who do you have next week and where? Dexter Tigers there. Okay. That is going to be a big, big game, obviously. It's a rivalry over the years. That's one that you all have looked forward to, and they have, too. It's fun to see these games. Does it help that it's sort of a familiar foe over and over, one of those rivalries that you play? It is, as long as you don't get big-eyed by that logo in the field. Now, Coach Malone does a great job. He and Coach Horton are good friends. Me and Coach Malone are good friends. A lot of that staff. And they do a really good job. But the rivalry is fun. Like, I think I've been there five years. We've got two. They've got three. Yeah. So, it's just back and forth in the past. That's what it was supposed to be like right there. That's a great point. It's back and forth. Brooks, five and three on the season. Three and two in region play. Right there, obviously, you're in the mix with two other teams, or three other teams. Chase and Deschler for that top spot who's undefeated. But this will be a big feather in your cap if you can get the win. That game's on the road again. Is that right? So, on the road at Deschler. When you play a team like Deschler, you know what you're going to get there. That's one of those things. Have you seen the wing tee any this year already? Not what we've seen on film. Just a lot of explosive guys that they take off. And they're very sound on defense. But our offense, like you asked about defense. Like, we've got pretty good backs. We've got pretty good receivers. O-line's coming together late. I think Samarian Coffey last night went for like 13 carries, 140 yards, three touchdowns. So, we kind of match up with, I think, with them better than we do a team that grounds and pounds you. Yeah. Because we have a light box, but we have a quick box. Yeah, quick box there. That's a good point. Light box, but quick box in defense. That's pretty good right there. Speaking with Brad Broadfoot of the Brooks Alliance. And, Coach, one last thing, too. When you talk about your team, it's almost their five and three on the season. You feel like it's a little bit of a late bloomer. You know, there's some kids that are late bloomers. Sometimes teams are late bloomers. It feels like you're starting to find out who you really are late in the season here. And that's what we used to say, like, by week four, you're who you are. But you look at the Deshlers of the world and the West Morgans of the world. West Morgan week one is their juggernaut the rest of the year. Yeah. Deshler comes out and they get better every single week. Right. So, you'd like to play West Morgan late and Deshler early. But we always have it, vice versa. So, that's a great point. I like that. I mean, that's some great insight right there. That's going to be a great game coming up at Deshler High School. Brooks and Deshler Friday night, correct? No, Thursday. Or is it Thursday night? Yeah, that's right. Short week. Short week because you're on television, too, this week. Statewide TV. That's a big thing, too. Right. And fall break, so we have to deal with that. It's almost like homecoming, getting them in there. Yeah, but you get it Thursday night, so you only have three days of that. But you've got to work it all in. But that game will be on PBS for you that are listening right now. You can watch that statewide on public TV, and it's great to watch. So, get one of the Northwest games, and that'll be fun. Thursday night, and watch that game. It should be a great one. And, Coach, best of luck, okay? I appreciate it. Brad Broadfoot of Brooks High School. A rainy Saturday morning, so be careful out there. Windy some places, too. The storm seemed to make more east a little bit, from what I say. I'm not a meteorologist, but seemed more east of I-65 than it has here. But there's still some bands to come through, so don't let your guard down today, throughout the day, because those bands can come through and do a little damage. So be aware to weather all day long. Kevin Johnson, glad to be with you here from the North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic. Joined now by the head coach of the Destro Tigers, Coach Patrick Malone, whose team went to the state line last night, took on the Ardmore Tigers, and come away with a big win. And, Coach, congratulations on the win last night. And it's never easy when you go all the way to the state line in middle Alabama. That's a long trip up there. It was, and, you know, obviously big game for us, region game. And then the time got shifted, and, you know, I'm very appreciative of Ardmore and their administration team. Hey, we're having some alerts with some high wind, thoughts on moving the game up an hour, and I appreciate that. So we moved it up, and, you know, it was a quick turnaround Thursday. We get that notification, so we got to let everybody know. We got to make the adjustment. But what it did, it gave us an opportunity to treat it like a playoff game where you got to leave a little bit early. So we got some operational things that we needed to look at. And, you know, you're always blessed with those kind of opportunities. But I'm very proud of our bunch for traveling. You know, I looked up there. You know, obviously we kicked off at 6, and I take a peek about 6.05, 6.10, and, man, we are covered with desks for people. I mean, from end zone to end zone. And I'm just so appreciative of our fans for making that trip. You know, there's a million things you do. We got fall break, Monday, Tuesday, so they could have gone out of town. But the calendars were set for Desher football, so I appreciate them. I can't thank them enough for their support. I know our kids thrive off of it, and just very appreciative of them. 55-14 win for Desher over Ardmore last night, getting the early start. But as you say, there's some schools of great tradition, and Desher being one of them, that if you started at 7 p.m. or 7 a.m., the fans would be there, and that is great to see that as well. And on the road, it doesn't matter. And going on the road, sometimes, is it real comfortable for your team to go on the road? Do your team feel like they handle the road as well as they do at home? I would like to think that. Now, there's no replacing playing at home and the chapp and the support we get there. But when we go on the road and we put on those all-white uniforms and it's got that dash there across your chest, you've got another opportunity to represent the brand. And for us, it's been a while since we've traveled to Ardmore to play. I've never been to Ardmore to play football. So we took that as an opportunity to showcase our program, our brand. This is who we are. This is what we're about. And, you know, I'm very pleased with our performance last night. Obviously, some things in each game that you've got to get cleaned up. But we challenged them, started fast, and I think they did. I think they played well. I executed at a high level last night. Coach Patrick Malone, his team went to Ardmore last night. You were on the Alabama side of the border there, so that's good. I had an old coach tell me one time I went there, he told his team, he said, you get in the end zone and you're in Tennessee, so go score. So that's pretty close how much closer you are. But you take care of business last night. Who played well for you last night? I'm really proud of all of our seniors. I think offensively it starts with the quarterback, Bryson Williams. He made some plays with his feet last night and got some guys lined up. Then we were able to play some young guys. Jai Burnett, backup quarterback, who's going to be a star for us. Tyler Holmes, receiver for us, made some big-time plays. Chris Bailey, senior receiver, had some big catches toward the end there. And just, you know, you get in a game like that, you've got guys that work so hard all year long, and they may not get the reps that some other guys get, but when it's their time and they perform, you go, man, that makes it all worth it right there. And then I look back and I see some older guys. They're cheering on our guys. And, you know, you like to see that. You love that that's part of the culture there, Dushler. And, you know, when Dushler was so dominant in the early 2000s, late 90s, that's how it was. You know, you played, you know, your second guy's got a lot of reps in that second half. So very pleased with the team before and so proud of our coaches. You know, this is one of those games you just finish a rival game in West Morgan, a big game, and you've got to flush it. You've got to get everybody right back on page. And the goal is to play in late November, early December. So we've got to keep getting better, just proud of our coaches for their effort and focus and attention to detail this week. Coach, when your Dushler Tigers go last night, you knew, and most people know, on paper, against Ardmore, a heavy favorite. Was it a chance for you to maybe try a few things a little different or maybe work on something that you said, hey, we want to make sure we work on this this week a little bit. This is a good chance if we get the lead, we can work on this a little bit. Well, our message earlier in the week was let's focus and execute. And then you're right, you know, obviously you're getting at this point in the year and everybody's got film on you and they've got you broken down. So you want to throw some curveball and fastball count, so to speak. And so we were able to do some things like that. Big thing is we want to make sure everybody's involved offensively. So let's get a guy, you know, a touch here. Let's put a guy in this spot. Let's do those type of things. And then defensively, we're able to move some guys around, got some guys, some quality looks. Very pleased there. But, you know, you can't just do that on a Friday night. You know, that's got to be some prep going into it. And, again, you know, just very proud of our coaches, give them a lot of credit for the proactiveness, the foresight, to make sure you've got to have a plan, obviously, but you've got to have a plan B as well. So I was very pleased with our performance. Speaking with Patrick Malone, the head coach of the Destro Tigers, his team now 6-1 on the season, 5-0 in region play. Cleansed a playoff spot there for sure last night. And now you have a short week, Thursday night game against Brooks, a rival, another region game, a huge region game for both teams. And it also is something pretty special going on because it's going to be statewide TV. Yeah, that's exciting for us. Another opportunity for us to showcase Tuscumbia and our program. We'll be televised on Alabama Public Television, be the statewide game of the week. Good 4A matchup here. Brooks is coming on a three-game winning streak. So they've got things rolling, so it's a challenge for us. And then you add in the Brooks-Duster rivalry, and I think both sides will be ready to go. I know our fans are excited for this one. Again, Thursday night, 7 o'clock. Going to be a great, great atmosphere. And just not any team gets picked for these. And that's a big thing about it. I mean, there's 10 games a year, I think maybe 11 they do, and they go from every classification, from every point of the state. But your brand, I think, has a big part of that too, seeing that you get to come to the CHAP, as you say, to Howard Chappell Stadium. That's going to be a big thing. It is, and it's a great opportunity for our fans, for people to see, because I don't think there's any secret. I talk about our support, and it's so appreciative of it. You know, and there's such great support in North Alabama for high school football and high school athletics in general. But at Dasher, I feel it's different. And I'm telling you, if you looked up there last night, we hadn't – I'm going to tell you, at every road game, we've got more fans than the opponent. And then it's just – they support. They get in their cars, and they're going to drive. They're going to travel. And then I got a report last night on the way home that Tuscongee had invaded Buc-ee's on the way home. So, you know, it was like a game and then a post-game celebration at Buc-ee's, and I hope everybody enjoyed their brisket. Should have been good. That's a good way to end it this morning. Destro wins it over Ardmore. Gets ready to take on Brooks Thursday night at Howard Chepo Stadium. Coach, best of luck, okay? Thank you so much. Patrick Malone of the Destro Tigers. Kevin Johnson with you on this rainy Saturday morning. Be safe out there, folks, but enjoy your cup of coffee as you're listening to us here on the coaches breakfast from the North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic. Joined now by the head coach of the Golden Bears at Lexington High School, my good friend Brett Mask. And coach, congratulations on the 47-0 victory on the Thursday night special. Was it fun to get that one under your belt on Thursday night? It was, you know, I ain't gonna lie, we had fall break Friday. And he actually, their coach called me last week and asked me if he wanted to bump it to Thursday. So we kind of looked at the calendar and jumped all over it. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. The fall break, and people might understand, but it helps the gait. It helps the everything. People, some people want to take a little, you know, mini vacation or a bigger vacation. It just helps all around, and so it gives you a chance to give your guys a little break, too, as well. Well, and you don't have to police them all day Friday. Yeah. So logistics-wise, it did work out. And, you know, it was good to go get that and then have Friday off and not have to worry about, you know, bringing guys in and pre-game meals and travel. And then, obviously, fans, you know, trying to, you know, non-football fans and non-football guys that are trying to take, you know, go see Grandma or go out of town for a little bit. So it worked out. I believe that's in Double Springs, Alabama, where you went. The double puddles, I used to kid them all the time. That's what everybody taught me. They would get mad at me, but I'd pick on them a little bit. But you traveled down there. But the first time you've been down there to play a game? It is. Yeah. First time in Double Springs. So you go down there and get a win. But, you know, that's a good little trip. Does that help prepare you maybe for postseason, which I think you've clenched now if you were to have to go on the road? Does that help you a little bit with those long trips? It is. And I went ahead and got a charter bus just for that purpose. I actually had some bus issues with timing and leaving. So I just went ahead and got a charter bus just to kind of prepare for some of that and learn how to handle those trips because it is different. I mean, it's different. I mean, it's kind of got a little bit of better playoff feel to it and taking a longer road trip. So, you know, that's good practice if we have to travel in the playoffs and just to get our guys used to that situation. I'm going to give you an extra minute here. I'm going to ask a question before I get into the game and they're coming up. Uniform walls. Do you have different uniform sets that you can go with during the year? Do you have different color pants, different color jerseys? I know Roja used to have to do white. But what color different pants you got there? Honestly, this year, and I'm kind of OCD, we bought new uniforms in the offseason and we have all different color combinations from years back. But this is my OCD. It's half of them are Adidas. Some of them are Under Armour. So I made the executive decision that we went straight LSU this offseason and it is straight LSU. Okay. And so we're gold pants every week with a purple or white top. And when I say we look like LSU, we were walking down and the kids are like, they look like LSU. And I'm kind of secretly smiling. Not that I'm an LSU fan. It's just a clean look. Yeah, it is clean. What color helmet? It's purple helmet. Purple. Oh, you do have the LSU look there. But we do have the LHS with the bear head, so it looks just like that helmet. We're speaking here with the head coach of the Lexington Golden Bears, Lane Kip. I mean, Brett Mask. No, don't. And go there a little bit and have a little fun out of you. Let's talk about the game and the win. Who played well for you? Well, our quarterback played well, and I think our guys played well. And honestly, our defense played well against a team that does a lot of unconventional stuff. I was talking in there with other coaches. I said, you know, I'm a young – I say young. I mean, I am the inexperienced young defensive guy of doing it this year. I had to line up something that I've never seen before. But when they put eight linemen across and there's a bunch of gaps in there, you've got to take a second and figure out how in the world are we going to line up to eight guys on the line and three in the backfield. But our guys did a really good job with it. We made some adjustments right there and were able to shut them out. So that was huge. Old school football. Oh, he had his old school single wing football. I mean, just – at one point, I think when they pulled both sniffers over there and pulled a guard to the four-man side over there, there were seven guys coming to one side over there. So – Everything but the leather helmets going on over there. So that's pretty good. It was. You get the wind, though, and you get a shutout. That has to be good for your defense to get another shutout in doing that. You've got to build some confidence there. It is. And it was kind of a bend, don't break. I mean, they'll three and four yards you to death. And so it's kind of one of those kind of checky manhood a little bit games. But I was proud of our guys, and we were – it was the simplest game plan we've had probably all year long. And that's kind of what we said as a staff Sunday. After, you know, a tough loss and an emotional loss, you know, we've got to go back to doing what we do. And so, you know, everybody thought it was going to be like a bloodbath this week at practice. It wasn't. But it got back to doing what we do. We did a lot more best on best this week and just kind of went back and simplified it and going back to doing what we do. And our kids responded to that very well. Coach, you're sitting in a region right now that's a pretty good region, as I said, all year long. And you're sitting there at the top along with Carver County and Phil Campbell all tied at four and one in the region. You have Faultville coming up behind you at three and two. And the team you play this week is two and three in region, the Tanner Rattlers. I mean, it's still several teams battling to get in those spots. And, you know, two good teams are going to get left out. They are. And, you know, you've got to come and play every week in our region. And everybody can be beat at any given time. And so Tanner's got a lot of good players and a lot of good guys that can score in a real big hurry. So, you know, it's back to one of those weeks of we've got to be where we're supposed to be. And I know this sounds cliched, but, you know, you asked me about the playoffs before we came on. I mean, well, I've looked at it, but not that I don't care. I don't want to focus on that. I want to focus on this week and winning the next region game and winning the next one just because that's the mentality we have to have. And the rest of it will work at, you know, how it's supposed to. Do you find as a head coach that your attitude bleeds over into your team's attitude? Well, there was an old coach that you were around for a long time that told me and told somebody I'm related to, and I've heard this for years, that the team takes on the personality of the head coach. And so, you know, as the head coach and as the leader of our team, you know, you've got to be aware of that. And so those guys have, I say, have taken on our mentality a little bit. They're starting to get there. And it's not there yet, but, yeah, a team does take on the personality of the head coach, whether they're good, bad, or ugly. I think that's a good thing for Lexington High School right now because they're doing pretty well on the season, having a really good year, 6-1 on the year, 4-1 in region play, hosting Tanner this coming Friday night. They're going to move it until Friday this week, so it'll be good, right? Senior night, too. Senior night, too. So recognizing the seniors, always a special night. So I know the folks at Lexington will fill the stands for this one. It should be a lot of fun. And I know Tanner will bring a good crowd, too, so it should be a great high school atmosphere. Coach, congratulations and best of luck, okay? Appreciate you. The head coach of the Lexington Golden Bears. More from the Coach's Breakfast after this time out. Let's go. It's Friday night football. Joined now by the head coach of the Russellville Golden Tigers, Coach Darrell Higgins, whose team went on the road in a battle of black and gold last night, took on the Athens Golden Eagles, and the Golden Tigers win at 17-7 in a defensive battle last night. Coach, congratulations and breathe this morning. That was a hard-fought game last night. That was a tough high school football game on the road with Athens playing for their lives, trying to get in the playoffs. Watched that one last night through the NFHS network some, and man, that was just two teams that went at it and two well-coached teams. I think that's the thing that maybe jumped out to me was how well-coached both teams were because to be well-coached, you have to be able to try to shut down the other team, and both teams really were doing a good job of going back and forth at that. That was a great game. Our defense played lights out all night, made huge stops down in the red zone, got some big turnovers, flew around to the football, tremendous effort. Let's talk about those turnovers because there was a couple of times I thought, oh, the Golden Eagles about to knock on the door and two big interceptions. Two different ones, especially there late in the game, but just both from guys that maybe you wouldn't expect a linebacker and a defensive end sort of. Oh, yeah, and Braxton Duncan had a huge interception. Dre Kergal had a big interception, but the one that just jumps out the screen to me is Kiefer Hallmark was playing. He was rushing. The quarterback did a quick throw, and he just stopped and jumped up and intercepted the ball out of the air. He was throwing a slant behind him, and I'm talking about it. It was unbelievable game-changing play for us. I mean, first of all, I saw the play, and I thought he knocked it down. How he caught it, I have no idea because he was about three feet away from the quarterback, and it just stuck in his hands, and he took off. And I thought to myself, man, sometimes things just are rolling right for you, and last night it did on the defense. What does that mean for your defense going forward, though? Oh, it was great. We had been playing really good defense all year, but kind of in the fourth quarter, been giving up some plays and some scores. And last night, in the fourth quarter, we just bared down and played tremendous defense. Taurus Davis has been the star running back for you all year. But last night, he got held out in the end zone for the first time. Still went over 100 yards. But you had another guy that's found the end zone, and he's gotten tremendous speed. Darren Jones, he's played receiver for us, but he also can run the ball. And he's a track superstar that is loving football now. Is that one of the things that when you see a kid like that with such speed, you say, hey, he's our wide receiver, but we've got to get more touches for him. Have you started bringing him over to the running back a little bit and just getting more touches? Absolutely. Every day, we'll say, go get you some running back drills in, get some work there. And he's got a feel for it. I mean, one of those runs he made last night, he put his foot in the ground, cut it up, cut it all the way back across the grain. Tremendous play for us because everybody out there is keying so much on Taurus that it was great to get another back going. Now, as we speak with Daryl Higgins, the head coach of Russellville High School. And, Coach, I want to ask you this because you may say no, and that's fine. But it seemed like last night was just a strange night in high school football because of the storm coming in. It seemed like there was a lot of anxiousness there. It just had an eerie feeling all night long across the state. Did it sort of feel different last night to you a little bit? I liked it. It felt good out there. I knew I was walking into that one. No, I really thought it was a great night for football. And Athens did some things on defense that caused us some problems as far as we wasn't blocking the right people, wasn't doing things right. Caused a lot of adversity and things. And our guys went there at halftime and didn't ever panic, didn't fall apart, and came out and really did a great job in the second half. You know, we're deep into the season now, and teams are starting to get, as we say, the book out on each other. And you start to see a lot of film, and teams are like, okay, here's what we're going to do. And if something works, then you're going to see it again, whether it be on offense or defense. So, is that something you have to work on this week saying, hey, they've shown this, and it worked against us, or they showed this? Is that something you have to adjust to now? Absolutely. I think, you know, somebody saw us having problems blocking something, next week we'll see the same thing. Who do you have next week? At Decatur. Decatur next week. Is that home or away? At Decatur. So, on the road, Ogles Stadium. And so, that's always a tough place to play and always difficult. Is that your first time to go there to play, by the way? Absolutely. I thought it might have been. So, you go play at Decatur. What are you looking for out of your team next week? Just keep getting better. Last week was really big for us after that Muscle Shoals win. It was such a high. The community was just pumping these guys up, bragging on them, telling them how great it was. And so, to turn the page on that and come back out after such a huge win and still play tremendous football really showed me a lot about our team growing up. Coach, I want to say one other thing before I let you go. Obviously, building a program, you've done that before in Marcello. You're doing it now as you're here at Russell. It also goes down to your junior high programs and your JV programs. Those are important, too, aren't they? The whole program, everything we do, we do everything the same way from the seventh grade all the way up. It's the exact same stuff. And there's really no secrets or anything that we do. We do everything as hard as we can, full speed, hold the kids accountable, and try to make them be the best they can be on the field, off the field. Everything that goes into being a student athlete. Coach, your team, with a great winning season in your first year at Russell, has that helped? I mean, I know it sounds funny to say, but is it a feel in the school that you can feel it in the school halls, too, as well? The halls, the community, the lunchroom, the gas station. Yep. And that was something I was having to stay on the kids a lot about. I said, everybody keeps patting you on the back and telling you what a great job it is, how good it was to beat Muscle Shoals. But we're not done just because we beat Muscle Shoals. We're just getting started. And there's a big difference between being 6-1 and being hungry and being 6-1, being satisfied. And last night I found out our guys are hungry. Yeah, that's a great statement there. 7-1 on the season, 4-1 in region play, 17-7 win over Athens last night. Go to Ogles Stadium, take on Decatur next Friday night. The Golden Tigers played well on the road last night. Let's see if they can do it again next week. Coach, best of luck, okay? Thank you. The head coach of the Russell Golden Tigers, one of the best in the business, Daryl Higgins. More from the coach's breakfast after this timeout. Joined by two coaches from Carbert County High School whose team last night knocked off J.B. Pennington last night by a score of 41-31. We're joined by Lucas Craft and Coach Brian Dickerson. Gentlemen, y'all doing okay this morning? Oh, well. Doing well. Doing well. Good to see you. Always good to have a couple Indians in here with me, an alma mater of mine, and so proud of them with a big win last night. And Coach Craft, I'll start with you. Last night, 41-31, tell us a little bit how the game played out a little bit. Was it one of those that you had to hold on, or did you get the lead and they score? Was it back and forth? Yeah. So, last night we had jumped out on them pretty early, and at halftime we had a pretty big lead. And, you know, the second half, our kids just kind of relaxed a little bit. And then, I mean, hats off to J.B. Pennington. They played until the final horn. Sure. They made it a lot closer for ball game than we would have liked, for sure. But, again, you got out early and got the lead, so that's good, and that's a good thing. So, you get the win, a big win. And, by the way, the Indians now 5-2 on the season, 4-1 in region play there in Class 2A. Coach Dickerson, you're on the defensive side of that. I know you probably are not happy about the 31 points, but at the same time you're happy about the win because your team came out and did what they had to do early, especially. Yes, definitely. It's always about the effort and making sure we do the little things right as far as getting in the line and just going and playing with great technique and doing the little things that it takes to be a successful weekend week out. And we've shown those things, and we've gotten better every weekend, especially up front. I take a lot of pride in how that defensive line is playing because if we don't win a lot of scrimmage, nothing else matters. But, like, we didn't want to get those points late. But the biggest thing was being able to – we jumped out on them early. The office did a great job of getting in the end zone, and then we went in halftime 33-0. But expecting to come out, and then we had some young guys that played early in the second half. And so those things happened, but there's still things we can learn from moving forward. Talk about your defensive line. You say you like them up front and they're playing well. Who are some of the guys up front that played well for you early on? Tony King is a junior, and he's done a really good job. But everything goes around our defensive end. Hulk is probably the – I think he leads the shows area in sacks right now. Yeah. He gets a lot of pressure, and he kind of causes havoc. And then we've got – you have EJ Qualls on the other side of that thing. And 8-8 is doing a really good job of just anchoring that front for us and causing havoc because we create a lot of one-on-one matchups, and we make you beat us. And place now football, and when we find those advantages, we take advantage of them. Before I let you go on the defensive side, as we speak with Brian Dickerson, who works with the defense at Carver County High School. And Coach, you know, 2A level, you don't have as much depth, but you're still at defense line. You've got to rotate as many as possible. Is that one of those things you try to get four or five at least out there when you can? Fortunately, honestly, we're playing about six guys up front. And so we try to keep them fresh because, like you said, we do have some guys that play both ways. A couple of our offensive linemen come in and sell for some guys. But we're fortunate right now that we have a strong junior class of linemen. And so we don't have, I think, but one lineman that starts both ways. Speaking with Brian Dickerson and Lucas Craft of Carver County High School, whose team won last night over J.B. Pennington on the road, 41-31. And Coach Craft, one of the thing I want to ask you is that Coach Dickerson mentioned is that sometimes you have offensive linemen playing defensive linemen and vice versa. As an offensive guy, do you have to keep an eye on that a little bit? And make sure, say, hey, we had one just getting nicked up on defense. Do you have to sort of watch for those things? Yeah, absolutely. Like he said, we're fortunate enough that only one of our offensive linemen plays both ways. And even though he plays both ways, I would say he plays about every other series on defense. But our skill guys, they play just about every snap in the game. Offense, defense, special teams. It's definitely something you've got to keep an eye out because, I mean, you want them on the field for both. But if you can get them a sub on special teams, we try to. But, you know, certain points in the game, hey, Coach, can I get one? No, you've got to stay in. And that's a key right there. That's a great point from Coach Lucas Craft, Carver County High School. Coach Craft, I'm going to ask you, you said you got off to a 33-0 start. Who played well for you on offense? Yeah, Sir Miller, he had a very, very efficient game. He had 12 carries for, I believe it was, it was like 2-11, 2-10, something like that, and two touchdowns. Sean Blevins, he played well. He was 7 of 12. I believe it was for like right at 150. We played pretty efficient offensively for, I would say, for the most of the night. Very well. And Coach Dickerson, who on the defensive side, did you have any guys with any interceptions or fumbles last night recovers? Do you remember anybody getting any turnovers? We had a big interception late. Ended up getting called back. Dayton Hood had a really big play down the ridge on the stop of drive. It was right before the half. So, it really helped us as far as the momentum between going into the half. But those guys are just, we got a bunch of pass breakups because we're going to win that in-your-face kind of defense. And so, coverage has been really good for us. You know, every now and then, you have a guy that will get loose out of a funky formation. But we had to do some adjusting last night because they did a couple things that didn't show on film. And so, we just had to make some adjustments. But I think we did well enough to get us where we had to go. All right. We're going to do a little critique style. We've got two assistant coaches here. And, Coach, I know that Dickerson, you've been a head coach and working and stuff. He's done a lot of different things. What's it like to see a young coach like Coach Kraft coming up and doing what he does with offense? I think he's an up-and-comer. Yeah. We talk a lot. He asks a lot of questions. He reminds me of myself when I first got into this thing as far as just trying to understand the game. And it's much bigger than just calling the plays of the X's and O's. Can you build a relationship with kids? Can you lead other men? All those things. That's what makes it happen. And I think he has all the intentions to make that happen as he goes along his career. That's a great assessment. You see a coach like Coach Dickerson who's been around the block a few times. What's it like to see him, Coach Kraft? Yeah. Like he said, we talk all the time. I mean, we have morning duty together in the gym. Okay. All the time then. Okay. Yeah. So, I mean, there for about 25 minutes, first thing in the morning, I'm rattling off probably anywhere from 10 to 15 questions just picking his brain, whether it be about, you know, practice scheduling or, you know, what kind of steps do you prefer on this play or things like that. Just, he's very intelligent, knows a whole lot about the game. I really enjoy sitting and talking just not even X's and O's, just, you know, little things about the game. There is a bond in coaching, isn't it, guys? Yes. There's a real bond. Is your staff pretty close? You feel like your staff's getting closer maybe even? Absolutely. Yes. That's a big thing, Coach. I feel like when teams realize that the coaching staff's close, it makes the teams closer. And that's a good thing as well. And I think it shows in your record right now as well. And next week, who do you have, Coach Craft, and where? We got Falkville at Falkville. All right. This could clinch a playoff berth for sure. Most likely, you're really there. But for sure, if you go and take care of business, what do you know about Falkville, by the way? With them, they're kind of a multiple spread offensively. And so, the biggest thing is they're going to try to formation you. Formation, yeah. And they're going to try to run downhill. I mean, I experienced in a couple years when I was at Sheffield, they were all going to be a downhill run team. Yeah. But the biggest thing is we can stop the run and make them play into our hand and get them behind the chains. I like our chances. But we still, like we said, got to win a special teams game. Should be good. White jerseys next Friday night, right, Coach Craft? Absolutely. All right. Should be a big one. Carbett County continues to roll. Five and two in the season. Four and one in region play. And the jammed up top of the leaderboard right there with Carbett County, Lexington, and Phil Campbell, I believe, all at the top. Should be a good one. But they got to take care of Falkville next Friday night. Coach Dickerson, good to see you, my friend. Good to have you always on here. And Coach Craft, Coach Brian Dickerson, Lucas Craft, both in Carbett County and the Indians who are on the road next Friday night. More from the coaches' breakfast after this time out. Joined now by the head coach of the Florence Falcons in the game you heard right here on 93.9 The Score. On Thursday night, Florence takes care of East Limestone, 49-13. And, Coach, congratulations on the win and congratulations on going 7-0. Thank you. Get you turned on there. I think we got you. We're still having a little trouble there. We'll try it one more time. There we go. Now we got you. All right. How about now? You grabbed a different headset than I had. I turned down the wrong one. There we go. All right. So, 7-0 of the year. Feel pretty good? Absolutely. We're glad where we are right now. Kids played really well the other night and did what we needed to do. And we're able to get some guys out at halftime and rest them and get them ready for this week. Even late in the game, you had a young freshman quarterback. You had a sophomore wide receiver. You know, so that was good to see that. And Bland coming in and playing a quarterback. So, it was good to see some success out of those youngsters, too. Yeah, we're excited about that young group. Especially that receiving core that's coming that are all 10th graders. Well, we're really excited about them. And Cooper Hawk with a catch, touchdown. Boy, I think he's still smiling right now. I think he's floating around here right now. Yeah. No doubt. No doubt. But it was good to see those guys get in and have some success. Because a lot of times when they get in, other teams put their ones in, leave their ones in on top of them. And they get beat to death in a mop-up role. But they played really well down the stretch there. Defense battled really hard. I'm really proud of those young kids. Coach, your team did what they had to do the night. And honestly, from my standpoint, looking down, watching them as a broadcaster, I thought, maybe one of your better games handled it as maturity and doing what they were supposed to do. They really did. Boy, they were not mature coming in. We were out of school, brought them in that afternoon. And, boy, from the get-go, they were out of sorts. It was out of their routine, daily routine, game day routine. And so, it was good for us to go ahead and experience that. Because we've got a whole week off with fall break. And just in practice to the morning time instead of the afternoon. So, it's an adjustment. And we got on the bus. And they were loud going over. They were loud in the locker room. And we were fussing at them and complaining the whole time to kickoff. And, well, before kickoff, we told them, guys, our maturity level is not there. We've got to go out there and fix this. And let's play the game the right way. And they did. They settled in. Halftime, they handled the situation. When I talked to them about these young guys needing to get in and play. And I'm never going to run the score up on anybody. I've had it done to me back in my career. And I swore then I'd never do it to anybody else. Juwan Simpson is working his tail off over there to get that program turned around. And I've got great respect for him. And he played at Austin when I was coaching at Decatur. And he used to come work out at our facility. Love him. Great guy. And he's working his tail off. So, would never do that to him as well. And our young guys, they get beat on every day, scout team guys. And they're at practice every day working hard. And I told those older guys, they deserve this opportunity too, just like y'all do. So, sideline was good, second half. You know, little hiccups every now and then down there. But guys had fun. And they were pulling for the young ones. And that's a big part of it. And Falcons win at 49-13 over East Limestone and go to 7-0 on the season. A seven-game winning streak. And actually, I think I looked back and found that the Falcons have won like 11 of the last 13. So, going back to last year. Coach, you turn around and this week it's another region game. It's a big one on the road at Austin. And a team that has given the Falcons fits over the past few years. Huge game. And we will not sugarcoat it with our guys. You know, everybody's, well, you know, don't talk about this. Don't talk about that. Pressure's a privilege. And we're going to roll in there tomorrow. And when they get there, we're going to lay it out there on the line. Last year, we were very disappointed in where we were last year. We went over there. And they absolutely out-physicaled us. We're going to show them some clips from last year where we could not tackle their back. It was embarrassing to watch. That was, the Austin game last year was a turnaround in our program. I mean, we really flopped in that game last year. And I really got their attention after the game and challenged some guys to whether they wanted to be a Florence Falcon or not. And the whole thing turned. That was the night it turned. We saw it. And it's carried over to this year. And we won't sugarcoat what happened over there last year. And then had an opportunity to beat Spartan last year for the region championship last drive of the game. We didn't get it done. And so we'll show them that as well. And it'll be for all the borrowers this week. And there's a lot after we can sell up a region championship. And we're going to tell them right out the gate, hey, here it is, guys. It's right in front of you just like it was last year. Pressure is a privilege. That's it. No doubt. That's a great line from Coach Kenny Marson. The Florence Falcons, 7-0 in the season. And clinched a playoff of earth. And, Coach, I've said this a couple times, maybe two of you already in different places. But in past years, we have had to watch many school boards. Now you only have to watch one. It's your school board. And it's all in your hands. That's a great feeling right there for this team to come to this point where they realize it's in their hands. It is. And we don't want to look ahead at an undefeated season. I've been there three times in my career. And I can look back. And not a lot of people remember Steve Rivers. But he was at Athens when I was at Decatur. And he had had some undefeated teams. And he drove over one day and told us when we had a really good team, he said, guys, enjoy this. They don't come around often. And we didn't. We were worried every week if somebody was going to beat us. And I've told the guys, this next game up, we can't be 10-0 until we're 8-0. That's what I told them. We tell them that every week. And we're enjoying this team. I told our young coaches, guys, I'm telling you, 33 years. It's happened three times in my 33 years. So enjoy it. Let's worry about this game one at a time. And play one snap at a time. And let's see what happens. In the history of Florence High School, you're about to play game number 250. Sort of ironic in the year of celebrating America 250. Game 250, pretty cool. And I've seen all but one game. And I've seen a lot of two and eight seasons and a lot of three and seven seasons. And you say enjoy the ride, Coach. I'm enjoying it. I know the team and the fans are. And you'll need a big fan support next Friday night. That's going to be a big part of it. We need to travel. We need to fill that stadium up. And we can. We travel well. And it's going to be a great Friday night over there. They're going to pack it out. I know that they know what's on the line as well. And they're in a situation where they've got to win. You know, two losses doesn't help them one bit. Right. So, they know what they've got to get done as well. So, it'll be a great matchup. We've had a little bit of a rivalry with them through the years. And some ups and downs with them. Some games we should have won. And so, here it is again. Buckle up the chin straps. That's it. Let's go play. Let's go play. Florence and Austin next Friday night. You'll hear that game right here on 93.9 The Score. Coach Morrison, thank you so much. And best of luck. And we'll see you next Friday. Go Falcons. Thank you. The head coach of the Florence Falcons. More from the coach's breakfast after this one-minute timeout. Game day's coming. Glad to be with you on this rainy Saturday morning. Be careful out there. As I said, the weather, keep an alert to it all day long. You may feel like it's starting to end up, but it may be some more things coming through, so just be heads up tonight and today driving around the Shoals area for sure. Kevin Johnson with you, as I said, from the North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic. Appreciate them taking care of us each and every Saturday morning as well. We're joined now by the head coach of the Central Wildcats, whose team played Thursday night a long time ago as they went over and took them to Carver Heights and win it 54-6 last other night. And, Coach, congratulations on the win, knocking off the Wildcats in the battle of the Wildcats. I know it felt good to get that victory. Oh, for sure. You know, you start talking about the last Thursday night, you know, the biggest thing that that was was another region win for us. And, you know, for us to do what we're going to do at the end of the season, that's extremely important. And I thought the players and coaches did a great job of preparing for the game. And, you know, we're kind of up against that short week, and I thought we handled that well. Short week, is that something you have to work out a little bit different? Do you have to just pull back a little bit? Well, you know, as far as practice goes, it kind of shortens the week up and what we're trying to do. It kind of rushes a little bit on trying to get everything covered. But I felt like the players and the coaches handled it well. Your team goes to 6-1 on the season, 5-0 in region play there. And, Coach, your clinched a playoff berth. I mean, that has to feel good this early in the season to say, hey, that's already in the books. That's one thing we wanted. Now I've got to take care of some other things. Yeah, you know, that's good. That's always our number one goal is to try to get in the playoffs. And, you know, according to you, we've done that. So, you know, it's about next week, you know, getting ourselves ready to play and trying to get better each and every day at practice and going into the next game with a rap mentality. Talk about the game Thursday night. Did you get off to a fast start? Was it a good start for your team? Yeah, yeah, you know, again, you know, Coach Gene calling that offense and Coach Madison with that defense. Both those guys do a great job of preparing the players. And, you know, got off to a good start and was able to play some younger kids in the second half. Let's talk about that, man. You let your offense coordinators obviously call things, defense coordinators. But are there times where, as a head coach, you sneak over there and say, hey, listen, think about this. Yeah, I'm sure you communicate, but are there times you say, hey, put this in here or do you have that good communication? We do a great job of communicating, but, you know, those guys, you don't want to bother somebody too much when they're kind of locked in on what they're doing. We do communicate quite a bit, but, you know, if I want to call the offense or the defense, then that's what I need to do. But those guys take that job and take it seriously and got a lot of pride in what they do. And I'm definitely proud to have those guys with me. And we've got Coach Sutter there that does those special teams, and he's special as well. But definitely got a great, great coaching staff. Coach, as we speak with Heath Wood of the Central Wildcats, that's a great point. I asked you probably an open-ended question, but you handled it very well in saying that, hey, it's their job. That's why I put them there to do it. The trust factor is a big part of it with your staff and with your team, isn't it? Oh, for sure, yeah. You know, the number one thing is loyalty. And those guys right there are loyal to the team and to the program and what we're trying to do at Central. You know, it's not about us. It's about our school and our community and our team. You know, it's not one person doing anything. You know, everybody pitches in and does it together. Who played well for you the other night? Had a good game of film. Oh, you know, the guys that do every week, you know, start name and name and stuff like that. Did a great job blocking up front all those guys on that offensive line. And Malik Ball had a tremendous game. And Lucas Price, you know, and some of those other running backs. But, yeah, those two guys right there stand out and jump out and you're asking the questions. Yeah, but the unassumed guys, guys you don't hear probably, Tom, like you said, are the offensive linemen, are the defensive linemen. Guys you don't think about sometimes, even like a punter. You know, you don't even think are a kicker. Those things are important, and all those things really play a factor, don't they? Yes, for sure. Everybody, you know, it's kind of, you know, everybody's got their job to do, you know, and they do a good job. Everybody does a great job of understanding that. Is this a chance for you, too, as well, to get to mix and match some things and maybe get some guys to get some reps at different positions? It's funny you say that. That's something we've been trying to do all season. You know, we talked about it from the beginning of the year. We've got, you know, a fairly young team. We've been trying to build depth the entire time. And we got into some situations the other night, and we actually worked on some things going into that game and we were able to apply it in the game. So, again, that goes back to that coaching staff, a guy that sees, you know, able to look out in front and see things that might happen. And it did the other night. We were able to be ready for it. So, yeah. Yes, trying to build depth. Coach, you take on West Limestone, I think, this week, correct? Yes. And that will be a Friday night game. Back to your regular Friday night. You probably feel better about that. But you get a Friday night game. And, you know, this is another region game at home. But, you know, right now your team is playing with a consistency. That's a big thing I see in your team. It seems like every week it seems the same type of consistency. Is that something that you really like about this program? Yeah, it's about next week, you know, up to this point what you're saying is true. But we've got to make sure we do a good job this week of preparing ourselves for the upcoming game. I know West Limestone has got a great team, got a good coaching staff over there, and those guys will be ready to play. Coach, I don't know if you realize your offense really has clicked this year. And I don't want to highlight them. 54 points last night, you've scored 49, 60, 49, 35. Your offense has really been a proficient, for sure, and very electric offense. That's one of those things that you've got to think, hey, if we can keep scoring like this, we're in every game. Yeah, yeah. Again, that goes back to Coach Gene and the outstanding job he does of getting those guys prepared. And the players putting in the work at practice to be able to do that. So, extremely proud of that side of the ball. But defense as well, so those guys are working hard every day. Are y'all on fall break this week by any chance? We are, yeah. Does that change things for practice for y'all as well? It will, but I think our kids will adapt and do what we need to do. So, we'll meet Sunday like we always do, and then we'll change the times up Monday and Tuesday. But other than that, we've got to practice. You've got to practice. You're going to play like you practice. That's right, man. That's a good point. Well, Coach, we congratulate you on the incredible start. Six and one in season, five and oh in region play, and really sitting at the top. And already clinched playoff berth. And next week, a win there would be even bigger for you. And best of luck, okay? Thank you again for having us on and covering Central. Oh, listen, love it. It's a great school, great community. And the Central Wildcats next week take on West Limestone, and it will be packed with Wildcats. I guarantee you that. More for the coaches' breakfast after this timeout. Kevin Johnson, glad to be with you this morning. Hope you're having a great day, getting off to a great start, and be careful out there, as I said, with the hurricane weather coming through and our thoughts and prayers with all those in South Alabama. Joined now by the head coach of the Rogers Pirates, Coach Daniel Garrett, whose team took on Lauderdale County last night in a tough, tough battle and an offensive game, but it ended up the Tigers had more offense than the Pirates last night and the Pirates fall to the Tigers. And, Coach, you knew going in against a very tough Lauderdale County team that just one or two plays here or there would make a difference, and it did, really. Yeah, you know, just obviously didn't go our way last night. You know, it felt like, you know, lots of things kind of lead to that. It didn't feel like we played very well on defense at all. And that goes back to, you know, I felt like, you know, a lot of that's on me. I don't think that, you know, I had the guys, you know, completely ready to play, you know, like they should have been. But, you know, it's the beauty about football. There's always another one coming around. And so it's back to work. Yeah, you know, that's a great point. The beauty of football is there's always seven days away, you're right back at it. And that's what's the greatest sport. It's a life lesson, isn't it? It's a constant life lesson. And football just teaches you so much. Yeah, I mean, you got two choices. When you make a mistake, you can sit there and cower and dwell on it, or you can get up and, you know, do something about it. And, you know, that's something that, you know, I feel like right now, you know, and I told our team this last night, I feel like I have put too much fear in them to mess up, you know, scared to fail, right? And I think we've played a little uptight maybe because of that. And we've got to let loose a little bit more and play a little bit more free. And, like I said, I take responsibility for that because I'm very hard on them and I want it done right, you know, because that's important. And it's going to be done right, but they cannot be so worried about messing up that it makes them play so uptight and so, you know, kind of, you know, lack of a better word, passive because they're, you know, fearing failure because they don't want to do it wrong because they care. And, you know, that's on me and I've got to do a better job instilling that, you know, freedom to let loose. Yeah, I had a coach a long time ago tell me, he said, if you think too much, you lose two steps. And I think it's a great step, but his statement, because his point is, if you're thinking, sometimes you're not moving and you've got to move before you think. And that sounds weird, but you really do. It's both combined. But now you've got to turn the page. And so you're sitting there still right there in region play. I believe if I've understood from some different sources that you've clinched playoff berth, and that's good. But the biggest thing is you've got coming up is Wilson Warriors. And that is a big, big game coming up next week. Yeah, and Coach Lane's done a great job with Wilson. I mean, when he took that program over, it was, I mean, it was down. And here he has just built it up, and they just clinched the playoffs for the first time in many, many years, and they have a tough, hard-nosed, good football team. And so it's going to be a great game this next week at Wilson. And, you know, like I said, that's the beauty of this game is, all right, we just had a tough loss where we took one on the chin, and, you know, now we've got another opportunity coming ahead to where we can go out and make it right. And, you know, kind of last time this happened, we took one on the chin, you know, went back out and won a tough, hard-nosed battle against, you know, the next team. So hopefully we can learn from that and repeat that part of it this week. At Wilson, Rodgers goes on the road. Coach Daniel Garrett, you know, this is for your Rodgers team. It's not a playoff game, but it is a playoff seeding game because there's three teams at four and one in the region. So this will sort of determine whether you're either two, three, or four with this game. So it's a big game for both teams, really. Absolutely. We feel like we can still accomplish a lot, you know. There's nothing really out as far as the region standings for us. But once again, we've got to focus on the Monday, right? We're going to come in Monday. We've got to look at the film, put this last one to bed, and then focus on Wilson. And we've got to have a good Monday in order to have a good Friday. And we've got to have a good Tuesday to have a good Friday. You know, my old coach, Dan Beavers, used to say that, you know, we've got to win on Monday to win on Friday. And that's a lot of truth to that. I'll be honest, I thought about him a lot last night at the end of the game and just some things that, you know, maybe we went through and some things maybe he would have said in a certain situation. And, you know, texted him this morning. But, you know, it's time to go back to work. It's time to get back to who we are. And, you know, I have full faith in our team to do that. And I'll tell you one positive last night. You know, we had a quarterback got hurt who's a very good player. You know, hopefully it's not as bad, you know, as we think, but we'll find out. And our backup, Braden Cronk, came in. And we just kept running our offense because we felt like we needed to, you know, see what he can do, see what, you know, if this is the case, you know. And that kid played, you know, great. And he scored a couple times. And I was proud of how he handled that situation because he had no idea he was going to go in and play quarterback in this game. And he did, and he did a great job. And I think that just – I'd just like to brag on him for being ready for that moment. It didn't matter if we were, you know, in the game or not in the game. You know, they had their starters in, and, you know, he went and led several scoring drives against that. And so I think that's, you know, I think it says a lot about the future. You know, hopefully that, you know, that the future is bright, especially for him. And I think it says a lot about, you know, the operating part of, you know, at least our offense and that, you know, something bad happened and they responded and kept going. And, you know, now we've got to do that a little bit more on the defensive side too. But, you know, I was just proud of that. I was proud of him. And, you know, now we've just got to move forward and, like you said, turn the page. Rodgers on the road at Wilson next Friday night. That is a great battle of county rivals. It's a great region battle. Coach, you put on the white uniforms, get ready to take on that one. You know, you've played there before. That's a fun stadium to play at. It's a good setting. I put it that way for sure. Yeah, and I don't know what it is. We've played really well on the road, and we've played really bad at home. Yeah. Yeah, it happens sometimes, doesn't it? And we also play bad every time Wes shows up. Every time Wes shows up, we don't play good. We're going to have Wes Richards. Every parent that's mad because of how it went, you can direct your concerns to Wes Richards. Wes Richards, don't call me. Call him. It's his fault. Wes Richards, our trainer, he's been to two Rodgers games this year, and it was both times that the Pirates took an L. So we'll keep Wes away from next week's game. How about that? We've got to do something. Hey, by the way, before I let you go, do you ever have any superstitions? Did you ever have, like, wearing the same thing? Yeah, a guy wears it. And I'll tell you what. That's another thing. So I had a wash going. I left this fall break, and I didn't wear the Rodgers. I wore that underwear yesterday. Yep, yep. So I think that was part of the problem, too. And you know what? I'll tell you what. We bring you to the ultimate here when we bring the coaches' breakfast. I love it. Coach, you have been fun today. And listen, but I'll tell you what. You're on the right path, and you said some great things today. And I think it's great that you took responsibility, but you also said, hey, let's go have fun. Go have fun next week, okay? And I know your team well, and that'll be good. Rodgers Pirates at Wilson next Friday night. More from the coaches' breakfast after this timeout. We're looking forward to that. Kevin Johnson with you on the Coaches Breakfast. We've had a lot of great coaches with us, but we want to close today with somebody that is really special. We could not do this breakfast each and every Saturday morning without the North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic. And they have put one guy in charge of it in many ways, and it's a good friend of mine. He's a trainer here with the North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic and works with many high school teams, including much with Florence High School Athletes, Wes Richardson. Wes, how are you doing, my friend? Hey, good morning. Good. I'm fine. Thanks, Kevin. Kind words. Appreciate it. Well, and not enough, honestly. I mean, I will say this on the air. You work specifically with Florence High School Athletics, and it is a large high school. You work with their JV, everything else, and we need two more Wes's to help Wes out. That's all I'll say. If you're listening to those that are in the Florence City Schools, I'm saying that. He can't do it all because he got so desperate one time, he was having me to tape up athletes. That's not good. So, by the way, I have taped up an athlete before on the bus. Yeah, I had to tape up an athlete on the bus. It wasn't very pretty. They gave me the third string to tape up, though. They were making sure, so that's good. There you go. Wes, it's so good to be here, and one of the things I want to say is, as Coach Garrett was picking at you a little bit, but you have to have as many hands on deck for all these games, and last night, you didn't have a game with Florence, so you said, I'll go take this one. That's so important to get all these different coaches, I mean, not coaches, but doctors and trainers everywhere. Yes, yes. So, you know, unfortunately, there aren't as many athletic trainers as we would like to have. I'm actually on the State Board of Athletic Trainers, and you know, I've got Clark Jackson that helps me at Florence High School. He's been there for years. Of course, I was at Russell for 20 years before the doctors asked me to come up and help out at Florence, and Clark is in administration now, but he still helps me out, and I could not do what I do without Clark Jackson, and I've got a couple of other athletic trainers that help, but unfortunately, there's just not enough athletic trainers to go around, so we do try to get our doctors and our physician assistants out to help as well. We were kind of shorthanded last night, so we're doctors right out of town, so I just like to go different places, and in my defense, I will say that I did text Coach Garrett yesterday, and I said, hey, I'm planning on coming out here tonight, unless you tell me otherwise, and so the last time I was out there, when y'all played Whitesburg, Christian, it did not go well. He said, LOL, come on, so I did have his permission to come, but yeah, I felt bad. I said, oh my gosh, but I was at the Pope John Paul game in Huntsville earlier in the year, and they won that one, so I don't guess. You're one and two there, buddy. I am one and two, so it's not the best record, but I can't say I did have that one victory. I can't say it's in my back pocket. He had a good spirit about him, and he had a team, so I preached Coach Garrett from Rogers being that way. Let's talk about athletic training right now. There's kids being worked on here, and the doctors are with them. This is a great thing for Saturday mornings, that the nurses, doctors, and I'll give up their Saturday morning, coming here to check these athletes. That's a big deal. Right. I enjoy it. It is hard sometimes to get up early on Saturday mornings after I'm getting in bed late, just like you. I'm usually on Saturday mornings, I'm getting about 5.15 or 5.30 to get ready, and I usually go pick up breakfast for the coaches and bring it here, and you and I meet in the lobby. It's a lot, but it is important. We want to get these guys, these athletes, and sometimes young ladies, and sometimes we'll have officials and band players come in and want to get them treated and seen, and on the road to recovery, we can do physical therapy here. If they need to go physical therapy elsewhere, our providers are good to send them where they need to go, but yeah, it helps a lot of times just to get them on the road to recovery on Saturday mornings. Speaking with Wes Richardson, who is an athletic trainer, what is your official title here? I don't want to say it wrong, so tell me your official title. Head Athletic Trainer. Head Athletic Trainer. I'm also the only athletic trainer on staff here at Bone and Joint, full-time, so I guess head and only, there you go. Okay, that's a good thing. I like that. That's not bad as well, and on Friday nights, it's often that I may look down from the broadcast booth at Florence High School and see a doctor down there with you on the sideline, and of course, there's two former ones that were former Florence Falcons, and Dr. Aaron Joyner and Dr. J.T. Murphy, and guys that I help sort of be around on the sidelines with and coach up a little bit, and it's great to see these guys giving back. And they love it, too. They enjoy coming out, don't they? They do. They really do. You know, I usually have two or three doctors with me on Friday nights with Florence, and I have to remind them, guys, I love y'all being here, but I need y'all to go out to other games as well, and they are good. They are good to go out and go to other games, but yeah, there is a desire to be at Florence because, like you said, a lot of them finished at either Florence High School or Coffee or Bradshaw, so we are very blessed. I'd say most of our doctors here are from the shows area, and the ones that aren't have been here for a number of years, and it's home for them. So we're very blessed to have not only good doctors, great doctors, but good men, great men. I just, I trust all of them, so. On this Saturday morning, as we're here, as we speak with Wes Richardson, head trainer here at North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic. Wes, how many staff members are here today working? Oh, gosh, probably about 20. About 20? Yeah, so about 20 different people, from administrators to checking people here. I mean, everybody. Yes, they're all here. I mean, when I'm walking in, it's not just me and Wes. Trust me, there's a bunch of people here. I did get tickled one day. I walked in, and one of the ladies was bringing her son in, and she said, are you the doctor? And I said, no, ma'am, I'm not. I said, I stayed at a Holiday Inn, but I'm not. But there's so many great people here that do so much, and this is a great tradition with the coaches' breakfast. Why is it important for these coaches to have that moment, too? Well, it is, yeah. It's fun for them. It's fun for me. I love hearing the stories. I think part of my job, why I love it so much, is the relationships a lot. And you and I have talked through the years. The relationships you build with these coaches and the parents and the administrators, it just makes my job fun and enjoyable. I can do other things, maybe not work quite as late, not as many hours, but I just love it. And I actually spoke at a parents' meeting this last week for the winter sports, basketball and wrestling and indoor track that Coach Miles asked me to be there and speak to the parents. And that was what I started out with. I love working with them for the best. And not only here at North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic, but Florence City Schools, I love what Coach Miles and Coach Bowens and our other coaches have going on. I just feel like that I'm very blessed to be working with the best. And hopefully the coaches see that as well. Hopefully the coaches feel a part of that and know that they're getting expert treatment here by our physicians and physician assistants and physical therapists. And that's our goal. We want to make sure we're providing the best care possible and giving these kids the best option to get back on the field as quickly and safely as possible. Speaking with the head trainer of North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic, Wes Richardson here on 93.9 Score on the Coach's Breakfast. The coaches meet in the little green rooms, what I call it back here, separate from where we're out here in the training facility and the physical therapy facility. And they come out here to meet, so I don't see them. But in that room, there's a lot of stories shared, but there's a lot of camaraderie. And it almost feels like when those head coaches get together, they can let their hair down a little bit. It's not easy being a head coach. No. And they have to be their guard up with their assistants and everybody else. Back here, they let their guard down. And on Saturday mornings, it's a lot of fun to let them breathe a little bit, isn't it? Yes, it is. It is fun to see that. And it's fun to hear these stories. And again, I just love it. I go back to a lot of these great stories I've heard through the years. I've been very blessed to be around great coaches and great teams from Alabama and Gene Stallings to UNA and Bobby Wallace and been around Johnny Long for years. I've got so many Johnny stories that I could not tell on the air. Yes, yes, we understand. But yeah, just great, great guys, great coaches. I love being here. This is a home for me. This is for you. And I'm just so blessed to be here still and doing what I do. If anyone, though, other than athletes on a Saturday morning needed to come and check in, they could check in. So anyone needs to see, they can still contact. How do we contact and get a part and maybe let them know how to get a part of being here if they need to? Yeah, so they can just show up on Saturday morning. So we're here pretty much every Saturday morning. One of our physician assistants or the doctors is here, x-ray staff, pretty much every Saturday morning, unless it's like a holiday or just a rare Saturday off. Most every Saturday morning, we're here 8 a.m. to noon. And they can be seen without an appointment. So a lot of times, that's a good option. I'll tell parents and coaches during the week and kids, hey, if you don't want to miss practice or school, why don't you come on Saturday morning? But again, we see non-athletes on Saturday mornings as well. It's a walk-in option, just like an urgent care clinic type situation. Folks, I want you to know about Wes Richardson. He's an example of trainers everywhere. They're working with high schools. But I'm going to give you an example. I would go to a practice, and I try to watch one of Florence's football practice at least each week. And when I go to the practice, I say, Wes, what's your day like? He said, well, this morning I had to go to a meeting. And then here I am with this team. But I'm going to be also going to the JV volleyball team. And the cheerleaders are practicing. And I need to go wrap them up and make sure they're all good. And oh, by the way, there's a band member, I think, that's stopping by to see me. I'm telling you, folks, it's amazing that this young man is doing so much at Florence High School is one example. But he's just one example of trainers everywhere that are doing it. And I just want to say to you, thank you. I really mean that. And I hope parents and coaches and all know we do appreciate not only you, but all the trainers that do and the doctors that do the work for the athletes and beyond. It is an amazing thing. And we couldn't have high school sports without it. So we really appreciate it, okay? Well, thank you. You're very kind in saying that. And like I said, I wish there were more of us. You know, I think people might argue that they, you know, should have more of me. People that know me very well might argue that point. But if we could have more of that, I'd try to like Clark that do such a great job. And again, I'm just, I'm very blessed to be around good people and good coaches. And Clark does a great job. And I've got Bryce that helps me some on the side. And Drew Garner, Bryce Palmer and Drew Garner help me some when they can as well. But again, we're all busy. And it's just not enough of us to go around, unfortunately. And I'll also say to all those athletes listening, I wish I could go to the next level, but I don't know if I can. Hey, you can go to the next level in a different place. And that would be through physical therapy, doing that type of thing, athletic training. So we need more of you. So I hope that they'll think about that. Wes, thank you, my friend. Appreciate all you do. And we couldn't do the coach's breakfast without you, okay? Thank you. Enjoy it. We'll wrap up the coach's breakfast after this one-minute timeout. Let's go. It's Friday Night Football. I'm John Saylor, your local lawyer. Kevin Johnson, glad to be your host. Great interview with Wes Richardson. I gave him a little extra time. He deserves it, folks. He has done so much for this Coach's Breakfast and for high school sports. We appreciate him greatly being our guest. And thank you to all the coaches who got out on this rainy, windy Saturday morning to come be a part of it as well. College football today. Some big games coming up. You'll enjoy these and keep an eye on some of these. That Florida-South Carolina game will be a point to watch. Texas-Oklahoma in just a little bit. I think Texas should win that one, but we'll keep an eye on that one. Of course, the big one tonight is Georgia and Alabama, and you'll hear that right here on 93.9 The Score. Personally, I think the Crimson Tide wins that one by double digits. That's how good I think their offense is, even against that great Georgia team. I think Alabama makes a statement tonight in Tuscaloosa. Well, that's going to do it for us here today on the Coach's Breakfast. Enjoy the day of college football, and make sure you keep it right here on 93.9 The Score for that Alabama-Georgia game starting at 3.30 pregame, 6.30 kickoff.
