The Coach's Breakfast on 93.9 The Score is brought to you by Lost Pizza, John C. Sailor Attorney at Law, The Courier Journal, Millis Place, North Alabama Boney Joint Clinic, Southern Pride Pest Control and Bank Independent. Now live from the North Alabama Boney Joint Clinic, here's your host, Kevin Johnson. And top of the morning to you on this beautiful Saturday morning, and welcome to the Coach's Breakfast here on 93.9 The Score. Kevin Johnson, glad to be with you. Happy Labor Day weekend. Happy college football weekend. Hey, Alabama Crimson Tide, just hours away from kickoff. As a matter of fact, we've got a car wash edition, as we call it. We're going to run these coaches through as fast as possible. We're going to give them all the time we can at the same time, but we're going to have seven or eight coaches go through in one hour, and we're going to make it fast and furious. It's a hurry up offense for us today. We're going to get you to the Crimson Tide pregame, and then Chris Stewart will bring you the call later today. So it should be a lot of fun with Alabama and East Carolina to kick it off here on 93.9 The Score. What a weekend of high school football. It was incredible because it really was a lot of, I would call, rivalry weekend. If you look at a lot of games that were played last night, just rivals. You know, had Brooks and Wes Morgan, I think, plays last night. You had Austin Decatur or Russellville goes to Hartzell. That's always been a big game, too. But, you know, Austin Decatur, obviously, inner city game, unbelievable. You turn around and you have Florence and Muscle shows last night. You could go across the board and you sort of seem like Bob Jones, James Clemens played last night for some reason, somehow. And it really is drawn out of a hat for region games. They don't do this on purpose. Every region does it different, but they draw out a hat and say, all right, you're playing this team in week three. You're playing this team in week three. And it just failed that a lot of unbelievable rivalry games played last night. So great for high school football. Great all around. And I think it was a great night for it. It was actually a pretty hot, humid, but it was a great night. And it'll be good. So let's talk about what KJ saw last night. Three things I saw real quick. First of all, Gulf Shores High School, way down south. Upsets number one, Sarah Land. Didn't quite see that one coming. They're pretty good, but didn't know they were that good. They knock off Sarah Land. That is Mark Hutzpah's team. And that means down in the south region, Gulf Shores, Sarah Land, there are several teams in that south region. Hillcrest Tuscaloosa is another one. Sneaky good. So in that 5A south, boy, there is some heavy hitters. And Gulf Shores says, excuse me, we'll be there too. So congratulations to them on the win. Thompson High School, their quarterback, Trent Seahorn. Well, he's been doing everything since about the 7th or 8th grade for Thompson High School. And finally, last night he did something in a 49-0 victory over here at Trustwell. He did something very special. I think I said here at Trustwell, actually over at Vestavia Hills. He set the all-time leading passer in the state of Alabama of all time in yards. So played for four or five years, but has done a great job. And he takes it to another level. So Trent Seahorn last night breaks the record. And finally, what I saw last night, and I think was really important, is that it was a packed house. Packed house last night across the way. I was at the Florence Muscle Shores game. I gave you a hurdle, 93-9, the score last night. And it was great for high school football. It was packed on both sides. It was great to see the great crowds. It's what high school football is supposed to be like. I've talked to other coaches and said, man, we had great crowds. Thank you so much for getting out and supporting high school football. And I'm telling you, with all that's going on in college football, NIL, with all that's going on, you know what? High school football still has that remnant of what it's supposed to be. And it's good to get out and be a part of it, support it. So thank you for supporting high school football, and I applaud you for that. Let's look at some scores from last night. And starting with that game, as I mentioned, that was heard here on 93-9, the score. Florence and Muscle Shores in a slugfest. Scoreless through three and a half quarters. But finally, with two minutes and 47 seconds left, Florence gets a touchdown from their sophomore Williams. It makes it a 7-0 game, and that's how it ended up. Florence beats Muscle Shores 7-0. What a game it was. What a great compliment to both schools and both teams for how hard they played. DAR on Thursday night was better than Asbury, 62-14. Athens knocked off East Limestone 41-7. Fort Payne was over Lee, 37-7. May Jemison, well, they stopped the streak. But Columbia goes 2-0, but finally they fall to May Jemison, 42-14. The other games played last night, it was Austin shutting out Decatur, 21-0. Belgrade better than Cherokee, 48-14. Berry got Marion County, 46-12. Westminster Christian over Briarwood Christian, I think it is, 49-7. I have to check that. I said, I'm not sure about that one. Hazel Green falls to Buckhorn, 48-22. West Limestone gets Clements, 20-0. Cobbett County got a big win over Tanner last night, 26-14. Bob Jones falls to James Clements, 49-20. Huntsville gets the rivalry game again over Grissom last night, 40-13. Brilliant falls to Hubbardville, 50-0. Hatton shuts out Fayette County, 40-0. Russellville on the road at Hartsell and knock off the Tigers, 35-21. Russellville 3-0 on the season, and they will be taking on Florence next Friday night. A game you'll hear right here on 93-9, the score. Hamilton 49, Ardmore 8. Hamilton has a really good quarterback down there leading the Aggies. Haleville 27, Oakman 12. Heckelberg over Meek, 37-16. Spartman better than Gadsden City, 42-14. Falkville knocked off Winston County, 38-8. Curry better than Danville, 58-7. Coleman and Miner had a great game last night. Coleman wins that one, 27-26. Lauderdale County big over Carbett Heights, 40-13. Deschler gets it rolling with a double nickel, 55-14 over Lawrence County. Madison Academy over St. John Paul II, 54-7. That was Madison Academy with that win. Madison County falls to Sylvania, 22-17. Tight game over with Lexington and Phil Campbell and Phil Campbell, but the Golden Bears win it, 20-18. Randolph gets by Lee Scott Academy, 20-13. Red Bay shuts out Phillips, 54-0. Rogers in a battle wins it, 27-16 over Elkmont. Scottsboro all over Fairview, 48-7. J.B. Pennington over Sheffield, 42-7. And Lindsey Lane knocks off Shoals Christian, 12-0. That's the scores we had from last night. Coming up, coaches from the Coaches Breakfast on this Car Wash Edition. Get that cup of coffee going, that breakfast going. Great tradition in the shows area. Even last night, had some fans from Muscle Shows say, man, I love listening to you on The Coach's Breakfast. It's not about me, but they just enjoy it because it's a great tradition in the shows area. And it's not about hearing me, it's about hearing the coaches, but it's my honor to be the host here, Kevin Johnson with you. And now, joined now by the offensive coordinator of the Deschler Tigers, whose team last night gets a big win over Lawrence County at 55-14. And Coach Lake Spurgeon is with me. And Coach, congratulations. Always good to get that first region win. It is. It's great to start the region off on the right footing. I appreciate what you do. I appreciate it. Well, thank you very much. Did y'all have the white jerseys on last night or the red jerseys? All white. All white on the road. Love to take the all whites on the road. It is. As a coach, do you sort of like that sometimes? Some coaches are like, no, I like when we're on the road. Is that good for y'all sometimes on the road? It don't matter to us, but I love putting on them all whites and taking our brand somewhere else. They look tight, don't they? Always. Always. And I like this. We speak with Lake Spurgeon, the OC at Deschler High School. And Coach, when I look at the score, you put up 55 last night. Your offense had to do a pretty good job. Tell us how the game sort of unfolded early on. Did you take control early? Oh, we did. So we took the ball, start the game, scored in two plays, got a stop, scored in two plays again. So we'll pride ourselves starting fast. You know, I think that's a big part of getting some momentum rolling. Old school coaches for the past 20, 25 years have started something the NFL started in this trickle-down, scripting the first 10, 12 plays. Are you a scripter as well? I'll script 10 or 12, and most of the time I get through four or five if we get off of it. So it's probably a little bit of a wasting time, but it makes me feel a little better anyway. Lake, you're just like a Baptist preacher. He scripts the sermons, and about one point later, he's often chasing a rabbit. That's it. So chase those rabbits. But sometimes it's the feel of the game, isn't it? 100%. You know, I think you kind of beat your head against the wall if you're just calling plays that you thought was going to work on Monday instead of adjusting. So different ways of looking at it. Really is. Tell us a little bit about who played well up front maybe for you last night. Man, our line's unbelievable this year. Our coach Spears came from Lewis County last year to us, and he's doing a phenomenal job. I mean, we have three new guys, so we lost three new rookies in there, and they're unbelievable. That's really good. Then you turn around, and you've got a pretty good backfield, too. Your backfield's played well. Your quarterback and your runbacks have been really good. Armani Jones and C.J. Grant. Armani Jones has been the main key there. C.J.'s getting some key carries. And Bryson Williams is stepping up. You know, he's never played quarterback. He's played a lot of football and never played quarterback. So he had a learning curve there, but he's coming along. All right, let's talk about that for a minute. As an offensive coordinator, and you have a quarterback that's not played a whole lot, so we speak with Lake Spurgeon, the O.C. at Destro High School. Do you have to take him a little different maybe as an early quarterback in early stages a little bit? Yeah, and Bryson's a little different. So Bryson has the aggressive mindset. He played safety, so he's like a linebacker playing quarterback. So he's a little more on the aggressive side than you say as a rookie quarterback. So we try to run the ball, get him hit, kind of get in the play in the game. But he's a little different than your normal rookie quarterback. You know, knowing the characteristic of your quarterback, it's so important. Knowing the characteristic of that position, I think, is so important. Not every quarterback's different, are they? No, every quarterback's different. So, I mean, you know, it depends on what that mindset is. But he's playing linebacker on the offense. And that's not a bad thing. It's right for you so far as you're 2-1 on the season. A big win over Lawrence County. You get the win last night, 55-14. You get a lot of players in, get to play a lot. Yeah. See some younger guys, too. It's good. You know, we had a freshman score. Well, we put him in there with our first line. He got the score coming out of the half. So I think that's big. You know, them guys deserve it. They're getting beat on the scout team. You know, they put the work in. They're just as important as anybody else. You don't get a look. You know, it's rough on Fridays. So it's good for them to just step in when they can. Lake Spurgeon, the OC at Desher. Are you in the box or on the field? In the box. Really? Okay. So do you like it that way? Is that your – I love it. Okay. I tell people it's like playing Madden. Yeah. Just kind of pressing buttons and go do it. Well, obviously, last night you were hitting the X button and the O button and the square button and everything else because 55 points is pretty good. And I like that as we speak with Lake Spurgeon. But, Coach, next week, who do you have and where? We have Hamilton at home. The Aggies are really good. They are really good. That is a really good team. So that's who we played second-round playoffs last year. That's what I was about to get at. I knew the playoffs in there. You've seen them before and you realize both teams sort of know each other because both teams had a lot coming back. So it's really sort of a playoff-type game next week, isn't it? Is that good for you this early in the region? Yeah. You know, we played – our first game was a playoff-like atmosphere. And I think that really benefited us looking forward to our kids experiencing that. But we're glad to have Hamilton at home instead of at Hamilton this year. I would say so. That will be tremendous game. By the way, I know you're on the offensive side, but I know your defense is already circled up. That quarterback from Hamilton is really special. He has been outstanding. He is unbelievable. Yeah. People don't – listen, if you haven't seen him and you're in there, you want to see an incredible quarterback, that kid is worth a ticket right there. That's right with the Destro Tigers. So it should be a great one. Howard Chappell Stadium this Friday night, can write for a Friday night game. The Aggies come into town. There's going to be all kinds of Cardinal and White from those two teams everywhere. It'll be great, but it'll be a fun game. And congratulations, Coach Lake Spurgeon, on the victory last night and best of luck the rest of the season. Thanks, Coach. Yeah, I appreciate it. The head coach, but the OC coach, one day he'll be a head coach. I can sell while he carries himself. He'll be there one day, Lake Spurgeon of the Destro Tigers. When we come back, more from the coach's breakfast after this one-minute timeout. But enjoy the Labor Day weekend, and enjoy the day of college football, including Alabama football, which is coming up at 9 a.m. pre-game 11 kick here on 93.9 The Score. So we're in that hurry-up offense for this edition of the Coach's Breakfast today. Now I'm joined by a coach that understands the hurry-up offense, the offensive quarterback coach over there at Calvert County High School, Coach Lucas Craft. And Coach, how are you doing today? I'm good, man. I'm good after last night, a tough win for us. But nonetheless, a win is a win. I think that's a good way to describe it, a tough win. You know, when you saw Tanner in Calvert County, I thought, boy, there's some mirror images right there. There's some kids that can go, and there's some kids that can run. And then, you know, you could just see those teams very similar in some ways, but a great win for your team to win that one at home. Yeah, absolutely. And like you said about, you know, you look at the game, Calvert County and Tanner, but Tanner's getting back to how Tanner used to be whenever they were really good winning state championships. They're physical up front. They've got skill guys. Their quarterback's good. He can run. Their guys out wide can run. They're impressive, for sure. I talked to their chaplain. They have a chaplain over there that's a friend of mine for their team, and he said the confidence is growing over there. And that's what I think you're talking about, too. That's the team that's growing confidence. But so are your Calvert County Indians. They're starting to gain confidence. Where do you see that confidence coming from, especially after a game like that last night? Yeah, definitely just last night. There were multiple times. We had, I think we had three turnovers last night. And we, you know, there was a bunch of times in the first half and even into the third quarter where we would have a big play, and then we would hurt ourself and get a penalty or we'd turn it over and things like that. And just seeing the resilience and the fight from all the kids out there and not giving up and when they easily could have just put their head down and said, ah, man, hey, y'all got this. But they didn't do that. They turned it on. And, you know, right there late in the game, I think we put together it was like a seven-minute drive in the fourth quarter and then went and added one more and made it 26 and pretty much just ended it. Carver County, two and one, I think, on the season. You know, you had one game where you were offensively, you sort of took over and won the game early on. And then the second game, it was on the other side of that game. Last night was that tight game. Did you learn a lot about your team, you feel like? And maybe your coach's staff learned a whole lot about you guys last night. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, just last night, you could tell that the kids, they didn't really, they didn't turn on each other whenever it got tough and whenever it got hard. Like I said, we turned it over a lot. We had a lot of penalties, a lot of, you know, not smart penalties, just holding things like that, jumping off sides, false starts. Middle mistakes. Yeah, just a lot of middle mistakes. And it wasn't, you know, the kids turning on each other like, hey, man, come on. Like it was, hey, don't worry about it. Next play, that play's over with. We're going to go to the next play. So it was just a lot of encouraging and picking each other up. And especially in games like this, whenever it's region play and the games that, you know, quote unquote matter, that's what you want to see. Lucas Craft, quarterback coach at Carbett County High School. And coach, when we talked about last night, it was a tight game, 20 to 14. You were leading Tanner. You had to really do something or Tanner had a chance to win this game and you took it down and scored. Talk about that drive. Yeah, so I actually, I'm pretty sure we had turned it over our last drive before that. Defense goes out there and they get a three and out and force them to punt. And so we get the ball. I think it was on maybe, they flipped the field on the punt. I think we got it on the 20 or around the 15. And we just, I mean, we just slowly and methodically moved it down the field. I mean, it's just a lot of credit to the guys up front, the five guys up front. Because we didn't throw it a lot last night. You know, it was real humid. Ball was slick. Couldn't really throw it a lot. Does that play a factor in you as play calling and as your offensive staff starts to play calling? Does that play a factor in that? We say, man, it's pretty slick ball out here. Do you talk to things like that? I mean, we do. We do, for sure. But, you know, ultimately at Colbert County, we want to run the football. Yeah. That's what Colbert County's always done. That's what's made them, Colbert County, whenever they were winning all the state championships, that's what they were really good at, running the football. Now, you do have to throw it every now and then just to keep people honest. But, I mean, by the time we got there late in the fourth quarter, we had already decided we are running this football and they're just going to have to stop it. Who played well? Before I say who played well, let's go with your quarterback. Your quarterback, you know, had some good plays, but if he has a bad play, I don't know if he did last night, I'm sure he had one or two because he's human. How do you handle your quarterback on the sideline after those top plays? I mean, the first thing I do is I just bring him over and I ask him what he saw. Yeah. And then we just work down from there, you know, where were the safeties? Where were the corners at? What was the box like? Who was in the box? How many people were there? And then... You process it out. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you can't just be like, hey, this is what you did wrong. This is why you did it wrong. You have to go through step-by-step and just make sure that they understand like the same place that I'm coming from. People need to understand this is a great example. Coaches are teachers and it's in the classroom, but it's also a classroom on the sideline, isn't it? That's something that's great. Lucas Craft, quarterback coach, Carver County. His team wins last night over 10 or 26 to 14, I think was the final score there. And coach, that's a big region game for you to get the win. Who do you have next week to wear? We have Sheffield next week at home. Not homecoming or anything, is it? It is. It is homecoming. I thought it might have been. I tell you, there's a couple of class reunions. My brother's class reunions coming back. I won't say how many years, but it might be 50. I'm not sure. But they're going to be back. So that's exciting for them. He's excited about it. Homecoming at Carver County. That's a pretty special time, is it? It is. It is. I also believe we're honoring the, I think it's the 1996 state championship team. So, you know, it's been 30 years since that. So a bunch of them guys will come back. So like I said, I'm sure my dad will be there because he was a part of the coaching staff there. So it'll be good to see all these people that, you know, I've heard about my whole life and now they're going to be here. So it'll be pretty cool to see them. The mystique and the tradition of Carver County continues. Coach Lucas Craft, great job. Big win for you last night. Congratulations. And best of luck on homecoming next Friday night against Sheffield. Yes, sir. Thank you. The OCR, actually the quarterback coach, I'm going to call them all kinds of things today. It's a hurry up offense. Lucas Craft, Carver County High School, whose team wins it last night and will take on Sheffield next Friday night. You're listening to The Coach's Breakfast. Kevin Johnson, glad to be with you, but we're first glad to talk about high school football from Friday night on Saturday morning. What a great tradition here at the North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic. Appreciate all the good folks there at the NBJC. Takes care of all the athletes. Feed the coaches breakfast. Feed me breakfast. Feed all the doctors breakfast. We just have a great time, but we also take care of athletes, and they do a great job, and it's great to have the head coach of the Lexington Golden Bears with me, Coach Brett Mask, whose team wins 20-18 over Phil Campbell. Coach, breathe a little bit. You got that one on the road. That was a big one. It was huge. Big win last night. You know, on the way up here, you introduced me to an assistant coach that's sort of there that helps out that is pretty special over at Lexington. You always have one or two of those coaches like that. It's like, those guys are special to the whole school. You can't put a price tag on Joe Hudson and his whole family and what they do for us, and Joe don't get the credit he deserves sometimes. I mean, he does all the stuff behind the scenes, and our people know Joe, and Joe is Joe, but he's one of those guys that, I mean, I call him the director of operations. There you go. He's a tennis coach by trade, but retired military, but runs our operations as far as loading ice, all that stuff, like military precision, and you can't put a price tag on that guy. That's what, he's put military, I knew where you were going. I said, that's the right guy in the right place, and nice to meet him today as well. And we'll tell you his opinion. Yes, he will, and that's it. Even during the game sometimes, I'm sure. 20-18, knockoff field camel as your former ball seer coach, Kenny Marshall, comes up behind you to say hello as he comes in. And so it's one of those things where that's a big win, but you were down early and even at half, and your team had to rally to come back. talk about halftime adjustments and what you saw out of your team. Well, you know, we kind of, I mean, road trip, first time being on the road, and it's, you know, about an hour and a half trip down there, and it's hot, and you know, you go to Phil Campbell, and I don't care where you go in Franklin County, it's tough to play in Franklin County on the road. I mean, just, you know, I'm not talking about officials or anything, but it's different. It's different. It's just different. It is different, and so, you know, not that we were shocked early, we just didn't find our groove early, and we're down 18-6 at half, and you know, ended up shutting them out the second half, and our guys just played, and that's one thing I think about our guys is, you know, I've tried to make them raw-raw guys. They're just not raw-raw guys. They're just an even-keeled team, so I quit fighting it. You know, we went at halftime, kind of challenged them a little bit, and you know, they're just kind of sitting there looking at you like, yes, sir, yes, sir, yes, sir, and I tell our coaching staff, like, that's just not who we are. They're just a very business-like team, and you know, not too high, not too low, and that's, we handled adversity well, and I mean, just couldn't be more proud of our team, and our community for showing up. We had more people there than they did. Wow, that's impressive. That's a long drive for Lexington to come and support the Golden Bears who win at 2018 at last drive. Talk about that to get the win and really pay dividends there. Yeah, and you know, I'm going to brag on our offensive line and Zane Kilburn, our quarterback. And he's kind of come into his own as a leader. I mean, last year as a freshman, he was kind of quiet. We had some kind of more vocal seniors, but he has stepped up. He stepped up at halftime and kind of called them all together, and we got out of the way and let him talk. And so for our guys to just basically take over up front and be able to stick it in late, and it was no doubt we were going to go for two just at the end right there. And then I'll have to brag on our defense. You know, we were kind of on our heels the first half. I mean, they weren't, we're a pressure defense, and they had a good game plan of just spreading us out and dinking and dunking and just getting rid of the ball. And for a senior, Sarge Buttrum, to be where he's supposed to be, and if you look at him on film, you think this kid should not be on this field. He's five foot four, about a buck 60, plays outside linebacker, but he's always where he's supposed to be and ended up tipping the ball on their last drive, and we ended up picking it off and was able to seal the game. So, you know, just hats off to our kids. I mean, it ain't coaching, it's our kids, and handling adversity and just fighting through it and never quit. I mean, you couldn't ask for a better group. I got about one more minute left with Brad Mass, head coach of Lexington Golden Bears. We talked about your offensive line. Who's calling the defensive plays over there at Lexington this year a little bit? Who's in charge of that defense? You may be talking to him. That's what I heard. You've gone to the dark side. Oh, my goodness. Has it been fun doing that? Oh, it's been a blast. It's been a blast. It's been a learning experience, you know, but when you have resources that you can call, I mean, you know, I'm related to one and then, you know, really good friends with another one we all know. I mean, it helps and to have a great staff with Hunter Killing taking over our DBs and then Coach Rick Rice taking over our defensive ends. Nice. It's a great staff and I want to say this. I added it up before we came in here. Our staff has 144 years of coaching experience in that office and I would challenge anybody to find a better staff in North Alabama. Impressive. I like the way you did that. That's Brett Mask of the Lexington Golden Bears. Who do you have next week and where? Oh, we've got Falkville at home. Homecoming by any chance? Not homecoming yet. Not homecoming yet. I already got one so I was just double checking. That's a big game. They're going to be very tough as well but you got that first region win under your belt. That had to feel good. Huge and 400th win for the school. Hey, how about that? Thanks for letting me in. I like that stat. That's a big stat right there. Well, congratulations to Lexington Golden Bears and Coach Mask. Congratulations on the huge win to your team last night. Best of luck next week. Thank you. Head coach of the Lexington Golden Bears. College football around the corner so we're going to hurry up offense now. Go into our two-minute drills. We've got four coaches in 30 minutes. Give them all the time we can to talk about their games and first up is Central Coach Heathwood whose team last night knocks off a great rival in a region game. Wilson and winning at 20-6. Coach, big win for your program. Big win for your school. Oh yeah. Definitely, like you said, big win for the school and the community and anytime you win the rival game it's always big but I think most of all the biggest thing that got won last night was a region game so moving forward we need to take that thing and build on there. Super proud of the players and the coaches with the game plans last week and putting all that stuff together. Come back to that. Where was that game played last night? Over there. Over there. So you're on the road white jerseys changes a little bit of things going on the road but you talk about the game plan and your coach and staff getting things put together. You felt like this week you had a good plan and your staff did a good job. Oh yeah, no doubt. Those guys worked hard Sunday getting that stuff together and of course the players went to practice this week and just did an outstanding job. Especially it was so hot this week we had to just practice so much but I felt like the players handled that well and was able to get done what we needed to get done. You still needed to get adjusted to the heat but you said you had to adjust a little bit you bring them inside for a few things and just get them out of there It was pretty warm I don't know if you went outside It was brutal for the coaches too, right? It was kind of tough just standing out there but yeah, definitely I am proud of the players for how they handled this week and definitely sticking to the game plan and practicing what we needed to practice with the elements like they were. You have a training staff that talks to them about hydration and all those things before I know you had to talk to them as a coach you had to talk to them about that. Yeah, we talked to them and encourage them as much as we can and we've got Gatorade and waters throughout the field house for them to drink throughout the week but we try to do the best we can a lot of times players got to do things at home to make sure they're doing that but we provide the best we can for them. Let's talk about the game last night you win it 20-6 on the road when did you sort of obviously it was a one score game at one time probably when did you maybe push it out to 26 what was the big play maybe that changed the game a bit? You had to been in that game that thing was all the way down the wire it felt like so you know definitely proud of both sides of the football last night offense and defense did a great job but definitely proud of the players for the way they played was there a turning point though I felt like anywhere a big play or anything maybe changed it was you know it was four quarters of football really it's what Wilson Central is you've been about this you knew going in it was going to be a rivalry game you wouldn't expect anything less than what the game was who played well for you last night everybody you had that written down this is a rivalry game I can't get anybody out it was a rivalry game coach let's talk about it overall your team you going in they had to do what they had to do what did you learn about your team last night you know we've talked about it before we do have a young team last week we were able to jump out pretty quick on those guys down there and then this week it was four quarters with a young team you never know how they're going to react when they get in those situations in tough spots in the game we're going to be tough enough to pull through this or not so learn that by the team last night you know we're four quarters of football we're ready to play that so definitely proud of them for that impressive win by the Central Wildcats last night 20 to 6 a team win everybody played well that's a good thing from your head coach Heathwood as they win it over Wilson last night coach let me ask you as a head coach do you have a get back coach on your staff that helps coaches get back a little bit we got two or three guys over there is that just for the head coach or is that for all the coaches we try to stay back best we can you know coaches do a good job on the satellite who do you have next week and where we've got Lardell County to be our first home game first home game and a new scoreboard coming in I know that's a big deal isn't it yeah I think we can figure out somebody to run it they said we got some training on it maybe next Tuesday or something coach if I was free I'd come help you it looks great out there I've been out there to see it man that is going to look really sharp so excited for y'all on that and that scoreboard let's light that thing up next week it should be a great game with Lardell County a good team coming in and another county rival over the years though do you start to learn the DNA of other schools this is what they like to do even if coaching changes happen there's a DNA of every school isn't it yeah Lardell County they're always going to play physical football so we know that going into it and they do a good job up there with what they did for sure well a big win for you last night in the Central Wildcats knocking off Wilson last night getting ready to be at home first home game of the year taking on Lauderdale County and I think the folks in Central will come out big time to support this one next week should be fun maybe we'll get a little cooler weather by next week can that be nice let's hope so coach congratulations and best of luck next week thank you for having us on coach Heathwood the head coach of the Central Wildcats more from the coaches breakfast after this one minute time out let's go it's Friday night football I'm John Saylor your local lawyer and I'm proud to sponsor been running this morning with all these coaches and I realize I've got a lot of coaches that don't run hurry up offense they are the old school coaches let's run that thing and let's run the clock and I said guys we got to hurry this up but they're pretty good they've been really good with it and I tell you one that he's really good at adjusting it on the fly and doing things it's the head coach of the Russell Golden Tigers coach Daryl Higgins whose team goes over to Hartsell and knocks off the Tigers 35-21 in a class 5A region 7 game and coach congratulations huge win on the road for you last night thank you it was a great win for the program it was a great win for the program and you know Hartsell and Russell over the years you know just watching from the outside in being in this area has always been a great battle but you need to go in and that's a tough place to play absolutely I think we beat them one time in the last 20 years and they hadn't played every year but it's been a long time since Russell beat Hartsell Well you get the win last night 35-21 on the road and your team really relied on the back last night they had a tremendous game Taurus Davis how about a career high 269 yards four touchdowns what a game unbelievable effort by Taurus but the offensive linemen are tight hands wing back they fired off the ball so low hard and fast it was really amazing to watch them play last night I saw some highlights and it was the offensive line really moved Hartsell a lot but also that back he did what he needed to do and he's got some inside moves he's got some outside moves and as I used to say I said he can go inside outside and he can go over the top that's a good running back right there absolutely he can do it all he's a great kid a lot of fun to coach your defense played well too though I know you ends up 35-21 but a lot of great plays on the defensive side who are some guys that really played well for you defense played all night long we got a big lineman named Sam Wilson he had been really getting better in the weight room and getting outside but hadn't transferred fully onto the field in the last couple weeks he started playing at a high level our defense line was really doing a good job getting some big strong guys from hard so our linebackers Braxton Duncan Weston Whitaker flying around Carter Clement one of our corners had a huge interception for us Jason Noel safety made a huge hit at the end of the game we had a lot of great plays on our defense we stopped them right before the half where they could have scored and tied it up then they kick off to us to start the third quarter and we fumbled it they get it at great territory and we stop them down there again so our defense just played tremendous all night long that's that's that first last five minutes of the first half first five minutes second half that's so important isn't coach no doubt and they had opportunities to get the momentum both times and our defense made stands Braxton Duncan with 10 tackles and interception your defense had three picks last night talk about that defensive secondary and that back seven a little bit we got some great coaches that do a good job of Will Kilpatrick our defense coordinator and his staff they work at it and have the guys ready and they go over everything with them and it's just a matter of the players going out and doing their job making plays and that's what they did last night coach Daryl Higgins of Russell Golden Tigers his team is 3-0 on the season and coach you have come out in three really tough games to start the season and lo and behold you've knocked off Deschler you've knocked off Mars Hill you've knocked off Hartzell the confidence is growing confidence is a big part of this game isn't it huge part of it last night was the first time we really played some good football we hadn't played like we did first two games like we did last night our guys had a different look in their eye that's big as a head coach you say the look of that is that something you see pre-game or just all of a sudden in the first quarter second quarter you're like okay I know this look this is what I'm looking for right here it's something we talked about all week getting into this region for us to have a chance in this region we have to play a whole lot better than we've been playing play with more toughness and confidence and step everything up a notch and we did that last night I know we talked about guys on both sides of the ball played well what position group you felt like really played well for you last night a little bit is the offense line defense line both those guys the trenches they were huge on their offense line and our defense line sometimes just took them and pushed them into the back field took over the whole line of scrimmage our offense line had been one guy messing up on one play next play we had another guy and last night we had a lot of guys clicking in the same direction coach you go to 3-0 you get the win 35-21 next week Florence comes to Russellville this is a game that everybody's been looking forward to as well going to be a tremendous game at your place I will go ahead and tell you I think the gate's going to be pretty good next week don't you think so I think it'll be a lot we've got a huge stadium last night's environment our crowd our band our cheerleaders it was one of the best experiences I've ever been a part of and next week will be the same way at home it should be a tremendous game you know this is good for high school football we've talked about the reconstructing of high school sports there's nothing you do about it it's up to the HSA to do it they did it so you have to live with what it is but when you look at this region this region now you start to say okay Russellville and Florence should be playing Muscle Shoals and Russellville should be playing you start to see these teams this is really more regional than I think we've seen in past years it's bringing a lot of excitement we were in there with all the coaches talking about how these crowds have been their gates what it's been like how exciting it is to be able to play people around here we're just glad to be in this region it's a really fun region to be in it will be an electric game next week 3-0 both teams coming in should be a fun game it's a big game for region but it's really what high school football is supposed to be like isn't it you dream about this as a kid these are things you talk about 20 years later playing these kind of games going out and it's really not whether you won the game lost the game it's you played in the game you were a part of such a big game experience a lot of people never get to play in a game like this well coach congratulations 3-0 in the season big win anytime you go to Hartston to get the win that is huge and next week will be a great high school atmosphere high school game we look forward to it I know y'all look forward to it it's going to be a lot of fun coach best of luck okay thank you the head coach of the Russellville Golden Tigers coach Darrell Higgins who has got them rolling and rolling fast you're listening breakfast here on 93.9 the score Kevin Johnson glad to be with you joined now by the head coach of the Rogers Pirates coach Daniel Garrett whose team gets a big 27-16 win over Elkmont I think it was last night and is that right I got the right he looked up I said okay I thought I got the right team a big win for you at home coach breathe a little bit that was a tougher game maybe than you thought but man your guys come out and put it away yeah I was glad we responded you know we've got to handle some things a lot better when you turn the ball over you know five times you're going to have you know you're fortunate to win yeah and you know give up you know a couple explosive plays on defense you know those are all these things we talk about a lot you know that you know control what we can control and all those things we can control so we feel like it's a good learning experience for our kids you know number one you got to go into the game with the right mindset but you know I thought they handled it well at halftime you know kind of made an adjustment you know mentally and came out and did what we needed to do to win speaking with Daniel Garrett the head coach of the Rogers Pirates whose team wins it 27-16 and coach halftime adjustments sometimes people say what do you do at halftime and some coaches say really not a whole lot but there are times where you have to do a little more than people realize and it seemed like last night might have been one of those games where you had to say hey let's circle the wagons a little bit yeah I mean it was more or less I mean look guys we got to do what we do and and you know stop shooting ourselves in the foot we you know you know Elmont played very hard but we felt like we were we were you know giving them a lot of stuff and we got to you know control it we can control if we just do that line up and do our job then we're going to be successful you know and so you know it's not time to panic it's not time you know for any of that it's just time to zone back in and you know it's like our staff all right what are we doing well let's just keep doing it you know sometimes I think people make it too complicated you know and it's pretty much if it's working keep doing it if it ain't you know why why is it not and then move on you know Coach Alvin Briggs the former coach at Florence High School the HSA executive director at one time once told me he said never let the first half beat you in the second half oh yeah and that's a big thing and your team didn't do that last night you rallied back come what you need to do and took over the game when was the turn what was maybe the turning point of the game for y'all last night I mean I think right before the half we tried you know kind of we took some timeouts to do a two minute drill and got the ball back and you know went three and out and then they got it and we gave up an explosive play and they scored so now it kind of you know so now we get it back with like a minute with one timeout and you know you know ran I think we ran stick draw and our quarterback took it to the house you know so that that kind of I felt like was a good turning point for us we went into the half with some momentum a little bit and came out and got stops and then did what we needed to do so the quarterback draw when all the receivers went stick routes and there you took off and he makes it whole and your offensive line had to make the play right there too yeah it was a good play that's been a really good play for us the last few years you know our quarterback's a pretty good runner and you know he can throw it pretty good too so you know I feel like that's kind of you know RPOs like that are big for us and that's an easy RPO because it's pretty much if this backer covers the stick running if he don't throw the stick you know and it's pretty simple hey I love the X's though I'll tell you the difference in coaches you're an X's you're an analytical guy you say hey this is what happens here there's other coaches I've talked to and they go no I'm not going to tell you anything on that that's fine because every coach is different you come from a mind of analytics and all but your team starts to understand that too because now they're saying oh this is the process is process a big part of what you're doing absolutely and you know I think going off of what you said before I think sometimes coaches they get too caught up I don't want them to know this I don't want them to know that I don't want them to have my film they're going to see it anyway they're going to see it I mean everybody's smart and is going to watch your film and figure out what you do well and I'll be honest I don't care what they do if we're good at this play or we're good at this coverage we're going to run it and then we're going to scheme it up to be able to do it no matter what you do and that's what we have to do as coaches and find ways that we can run that play maybe it's this motion maybe it's this formation maybe it's this disguise on defense and so that's what we try to do and sometimes we do it better than others and you know and other times we need to do better and I feel like last night you know collectively we did not you know do a great job and it's on me as the head coach we've got to be better prepared and we've got to you know have the right mindset going into things to where we're not finding ourselves in a situation where we've got to come from behind again okay so you know that starts with me and I think that that will get better and that's what I told our kids last night I said what a great opportunity to learn a lesson from a win instead of a loss that's great insight from coach Daniel Garrett I love how coaches are so different and it's great and I love getting and just it's for me it's fascinating as a broadcaster to see how these coaches think and how they do things and I love where your mind goes on that you win last night 27-16 quickly who played well for you last night one player maybe that played well for you I thought that defensively Hunter Bacon played well again I felt like that Jason Redding who's a safety force you know he had been injured he played pretty well pretty good to see him come back and play yeah he's getting experience he just got clear before that the first game so he's kind of not had a lot of reps and I think he's just getting better with the more reps he gets who do you have next week and where so we'll go two Clements two Clements another region game they got the new turf down white jerseys all white going over that way should be a lot of fun but the big thing you're winning on region play coach congratulations on that and best of luck next week okay thank you appreciate it the head coach of the Rogers Pirates coming back more from the coaches breakfast after this one time out we'll have coach Kenny Morrison of the Florence Falcons it's summertime that create a stronger community full of endless potential for over 75 years we've served this place we all call home Bank Independent we're invested in you member FDIC the tailback will be the sophomore Williams he's been outstanding first and 10 at the 44 may hand the quarterback all he needs is just a step Williams cuts back looking found the step it's loose to the 45 to the 40 to the 30 the 20 Keon to the house touchdown Florence the sophomore electrifies the blue and that was last night at James F. Moore Stadium in a game that was a slugfest the game you heard on 93-9 the score late touchdown from Keon Williams and Florence wins at 7-0 and joined now by head coach Kenny Morrison the Florence Falcons and coach wow what a game it was what high school football is all about last night it was it was an electric environment my gosh standing room only it couldn't got any better than last night going in did you think hey it'll be 0-0 midway fourth quarter you know we talked about it on the way over there we said you know this thing could be 35 30 or it could be 0-0 going into the fourth and sure enough it was and I told our kids after pregame warm up we're sitting in the locker room trying to get ready to go and I told them I said guys it's fixing to be a heavyweight fight it's going to be a 15 rounder and it was it lived up to the billing it was and I tell you honestly it was one of those things where as I listened and watched the game I thought we've got a couple of standing eight counts for both teams and your defense bend but not break two three four times it was impressive how they held muscles out inside their own territory a couple of times and really changed the game it did I mean our guys fought through some adverse situations and we always preach it to them something good is going to happen something bad is going to happen you've got to treat it the same keep playing one play at a time play the next play all that stuff and our guys did and we were very poor tackling last night I watched the film it's not good we'll get that corrected there'll be some tackling circuits going on this week but we've got to be careful with that too because we are banged up for sure that was an absolute battle Kayon Williams the young running back everybody will know about the touchdown run at the end of the game which was electric but he had a play in the first half that was one of the more incredible plays I've seen in a long time where the snap went over the Florence quarterback Mahan's head all the way into the end zone 20 yards back most coaches will just scream fall on it give up the safety don't give up a touchdown he picks it up he's got six seven eight Trojan players around him he fights out of the end zone and gets to the half yard line to not give up a safety that play on film will be sent away to many coaches the next level for many years to come that probably was the game changing moment as little as probably it seemed to most folks that changed the game for sure he had the ball and I mean he was seven eight yards deep in that end zone and he was kind of just looking for a way out of there and he was not going to be denied it was almost the reverse of trying to get into the end zone and reaching out with the ball trying to extend it to the goal line to score it was he extended it to get out of the end zone to keep it from being two points and it was that would have been a major deal with us having to kick off from the 20 after safety and you just never know what happens from there and we felt like the first team score was probably going to win when we made it to the fourth quarter but that was a phenomenal play our coaches sent the video of it this morning off a huddle and said this was the play that won the game for us yeah I would agree with that as we speak with Kenny Morrison the head coach of the Florence Falcons and coach a huge win for your team last night but more than that you know the resilience of your team last night and hats off to muscle shows oh my gosh what a team I mean this is this is two I felt like personally two of the top teams in North Alabama going at it and they showed it last night the way both teams played yeah I said it on a post game interview with one of the TV stations whatever I hate to give you know the other teams in our region bulletin board material whatever but we felt like going in this might be the region championship and we still got a lot of ball to play I mean there's some really good teams in that region it's going to be a fight like that throughout but that one set the tone for the season right there they were a really good football team hats off to Coach Darden and those guys they you know Coach Basing leaving everybody they're going to fall off they're going to fall off they have not fallen off one bit but I mean they've still got same staff guys that have been there and they understand the Muscle Shoals way and I don't look for them to fall again I mean I think they're an 8-2 team as well and who knows we could run across them in the playoffs again it'd be interesting to see yeah I mean this region is tough but yeah they are really outstanding team as is Florence and as is other teams in this region and Coach one of the things real quick just the crowd last night have you been to a game like that it felt like old school it's been a long time I've been in this business 33 years and I can remember some big ones we had at Decatur with 8 or 10,000 in the stands were some big games way back then back in the old days I call it and this was one of the best environments I've been in in a long, long time probably since the state championship game up in Fayetteville was probably the last time I've seen the crowd as electric as it was last night well you think it was electric last night this week we go to Russellville Florence and Russellville at Russellville and you think this was electric last night it's going to have to be it's going to be just another scenario of the same thing next week yeah I hope Coach Higgins will listen to me on the radio I'm going to tell on him we're back there in the back cutting up and he and I have been friends since high school he's a phenomenal football coach phenomenal man love him to death and he's the biggest poor mouth that there is and he was begging us not to beat him really bad he was begging me coach I said I had nothing to do with it terrible but Dave got a good football team and he runs the wing tee and that wing tee he runs it to perfection he's a good play caller as there is in this country running the wing tee he teaches clinics on it and I've sat down with him for a couple of days way back and I thought I knew something about the wing tee until I sat down with him and realized I'm not real sharp at it but he's he's really good Chris Ballantyne's defensive coordinator with him over there one of the top defensive coordinators that's ever been in the state coached with me at Florence when we first got there he's unbelievable he'll have them ready that will be a phenomenal game that's going to be a packed house too that's two gates I wish we'd had that away game and then the one coming up with Russell but he did say well we're going to make some money but I just hope y'all don't beat us up too bad I said I'm not listening to all that Higgins not doing it I know how you do so but he'll have them ready it'll be a great football game it will be a great football game you'll hear it right here on 93.9 the score and coach again just congratulations I would have to say the Waffle House last night must have tasted pretty good well unfortunately I had to go check on one of our guys that had some full body cramps and was over here getting some IV's in so I missed Waffle House last night and I heard it was standing room only over there as well yeah well I tell you what it's going to be a big one this Friday night Florence at Russellville Florence 3-0 Russellville 3-0 coach we wish you the best of luck and that's going to do it for our broadcast today great high school games we went through the car wash today next week Florence and Russell here on 93.9 the score will be a fun one and get ready for Alabama Crimson Tide
