Good afternoon and welcome here to the Boomo Bugg Show. I'm Harold Bugg alongside Brett Beaird. Thank you so much for giving us free ride around the Tennessee Valley. Brett Beaird, welcome in where. The question is how high or how low is your favorite team of the latest on three pole. Good afternoon, welcome in and how are you?
Happy Tuesday to you and the listeners. William Redfish Barger will give us an update on Alabama's summer camp at about one o'clock.
Las Vegas insider Bruce Marshall previews the upcoming season, but Adam is here right now with his SEC power rankings one month before the season opener.
It's always a pleasure for us to welcome in the man who's always got it together. Adam, welcome in. How are you?
I'm doing great, guys. How are you?
Hey, Booney.
Man, we're doing all right. You know, you guys do a great job there at Saturday Down South, Adam.
We saw the latest poll out from on3.com and for Alabama, they haven't tread in these waters since 2008.
In other words, if you've got a kid who's basically a freshman in college, this is the first time Alabama's been this low in a poll.
14th, according to on3.com. Others have got them there at 12, some at 11.
Haven't seen one yet inside the top 10. Adam, your thoughts, who's right and who's wrong about where you put Alabama?
I think the 14th is about right. I mean, maybe a couple spots higher, but, you know, I don't think that you can name them a top 10 team until you see what that offense looks like.
You know, there's a pretty high profile quarterback battle going on and, you know, the offensive line lost a couple pieces from last year that they're top performers.
And, you know, it wasn't overall a very good performing offensive line. The running game didn't get significantly better unless E.J. Crowell just burst onto the scene as a freshman, which is certainly possible.
You know, we got to see it first. And so, you know, I think that being 14th is a little bit to do with reputation and a lot to do with the defense.
But that offense is still a big question mark. So, I'm not surprised that it's one of the lower preseason rankings in recent memory.
Adam, your SEC power rankings, which you updated, Auburn is number 11. Actually, they have gone up one.
And I agree with you. The more you look at the matchup with Baylor in Atlanta, there's no question Auburn is the more talented team on paper.
Now, I don't know what, if D.J. Langway can be better than he was at Florida. We'll see about that.
But a lot of new players for Baylor, a lot of question marks for Dave Aranda, and this is a really key year for him.
I'm like you. I think Auburn wins that first game by two or three touchdowns.
Yeah, I mean, I agree. I think that the reason Auburn moved up one was just because I had Vanderbilt moving down a couple spots the more I look at Vanderbilt.
But there's no reason to settle for anything short of a multiple score victory against Baylor.
I mean, it's going to take something special from D.J. Langway to keep him close, which is certainly within his possibilities.
But, you know, Auburn has the playbook on Lagway from his Florida days, too.
Just keep him under pressure, keep him uncomfortable, hit him a couple times.
You know, it's just, you know, he's got all the arm talent in the world, but he hasn't shown that he can stay on the field for any stretch of time.
So, you know, I think that Auburn should win that game pretty handily, especially with Flagway playing his first real game in a new system.
So, yeah, I think that Auburn should start the year 1-0 and then everything just starts building towards that week three showdown in Florida.
Adam, Spencer, looking up with us, because there's Saturday down south.
Adam, I'm looking at your power rankings, and it's all relative, is it not?
I mean, where Auburn fans have been, they'll take that 11 right now.
A fan base that's not going to take number 10, I think, and that'd be Tennessee.
It's like, you've got basically, in effect, Auburn and Tennessee are neck and neck.
One's 11, one's 10.
I don't think Tennessee fans are going to be happy with number 10, if that proves to be the case.
I can tell you that they are not happy with that.
Yep, a bit.
But, you know, I would say that there is a decent-sized gap between that top 10 and the 11 where Auburn is.
You know, just, you know, another situation we talked about Alabama earlier.
Well, you know, Tennessee has a QB battle on its hands, too, and I think it's fairly similar.
But with just slightly lesser quality, like, I think I'd rather have Keelan Russell than Faison Brandon.
You know, maybe in a couple years that shifts, because I think Brandon is a tremendously talented player.
He's just a true freshman.
You know, Keelan Russell at least has some playing time under his belt at the SEC level.
And then, you know, George McIntyre.
I think Austin Mack is probably a slightly better version of him, based on having more experience with his current staff.
So, yeah, I think that Tennessee, you know, Tennessee also had its prize transfer for Penn State.
The edge rusher would just be medically disqualified from the season, which is not great when, you know,
edge rushers are the, you know, top-paid NIL players on defense, you know, compared to the QB on offense.
So, you know, there's some red flags that I'm not quite there yet with Tennessee,
even if I do really think that this is a top-five SEC offensive line this year,
and even if I do really like a couple other receivers and then Deshaun Bishop in the backfield.
You've got Florida number nine.
Harold and I don't know John Summeroff from North Alabama, played at Gristom High School.
He's won everywhere he's been, been in the championship game.
I don't know if the ceiling's 6-6 or 7-5, but I don't think there's any question.
This is going to be an improved team.
They've got a quarterback battling themselves.
But all the reports indicate, again, winning the line of scrimmage is so key to him.
I spend a big emphasis.
I think that's about right for Florida.
You know, whether it be 7-5, we'll see, and you're right.
That's the key game for me for both Auburn and Florida is that third game of the year.
Yeah, absolutely.
If Florida can go on the road in its first SEC game under Summerall and pick up a win,
then, you know, they'll probably move into the top half of the rankings there.
So, you know, I think that, you know, of all the coordinator hires this offseason,
one of the most important ones was Buster Faulkner at Florida.
You know, I think based on his track record at Georgia Tech and other staff that he's had,
it's clear that he prioritizes the same thing as Summerall with, you know,
a strong running game and dominating that line of scrimmage up front on both sides.
So, yeah, I think there's a lot to like about the staff that Summerall put together.
I think there's, you know, some key talent returning.
But in a nine-game SEC schedule, yeah, I think seven and five would have to be seen as a success for year one.
Adam, we mentioned Auburn and Tennessee being neck and neck.
Auburn again, 11, Tennessee 10.
Let's brag about your boys from Mizzou.
Brent talked about Florida.
They're number nine.
Right behind them are your Tigers from Missouri.
And how about this?
Well, Auburn and Tennessee are neck and neck in your power rankings.
Missouri, when's the last time we thought we'd be saying this?
Missouri and Alabama are neck and neck.
Mizzou eight, Alabama seven.
Yeah, there's another big gap there between Mizzou and the top seven in my rankings.
You know, I think that any of the top seven teams can make a run at the playoff.
I don't see that from Mizzou this year, unfortunately.
You know, I do think that, you know, at eight, four, nine, and three,
he's proven that he can consistently churn out those, if not better, seasons at Mizzou.
And as a Mizzou fan, like, I'm happy with that as long as we get the occasional 10-win-plus season.
You know, I think he is eventually, at some point, going to lead the Tigers to the playoff,
whether it's, you know, or 24 or whatever.
But, you know, I like what he's built there.
And, you know, just keep riding with, you know, their player evaluations on both sides of the ball are spot on,
which gives me confidence about Austin Simmons coming to Columbia this year.
So, yeah, I think that, you know, a lot of people just see Mizzou and they're just like,
well, somebody's got to take a step back.
And then they just automatically drop Mizzou down to six and six or five and seven.
And I think that's just disrespectful based on what drink is built there in Como.
You've got Oklahoma number six.
And you also did an article about dark horses,
one dark horse team that could win every power four conference.
And you've got Oklahoma.
And I agree with that.
I think the Sooners, again, beat Alabama and Tuscaloosa.
Of course, Alabama returned the favor in Norman.
But their defense is going to be very good again.
Kip Lewis, Henneke, David Stone is a real star in the SEC.
The Bowen brothers.
Trail Harris, Livingstone.
But John Mateer, if he can stay healthy, tough schedule.
But you've got Oklahoma number six.
I agree.
I think they are a dark horse in the SEC.
Yeah, like the more that the reason I flipped them above Alabama and these power rankings is just I just sat there looking at the two deep on deeper Oklahoma for a while.
It's just loaded at every level.
You know, Alabama has the best secondary in the SEC and maybe even the country.
But Oklahoma is right there with them.
And, you know, Oklahoma's defensive line.
You mentioned David Stone.
And then, you know, they have, you know, some guys in the linebacker position that were their two leading tacklers coming back to the mix this year.
So, yeah, I think that Brent Venables is, you know, he's a well-respected play caller.
He's had success leading defenses everywhere he's been.
And so, I don't expect that to change this time around.
And so, yeah, I mean, Oklahoma, that defense sets a pretty high floor for them.
And if John Mateer can be early 2025, John Mateer can be longer before he gets too banged up.
Then this could be a special year in Norman if they can navigate that brutal schedule.
Again, Adam Spencer in the huddle with us.
Adam, do you think this is one of the toughest years ever to do evaluations at this point because of all the comings and goings of the Portland and all that stuff?
It just seems like, if you agree, the one thing that we get from everybody we talk to across the Alpha to the Omega is, well, it depends on the offensive line.
And we know that everybody's gone shopping in the offseason to plug that gap.
It's like a prize reliever out of the bullpen or a starter in Major League Baseball.
You ask somebody, well, what are you looking for at the trade deadline?
The answer is the same across the board.
In your opinion, who is the strongest, especially at the offensive line right now in the league?
And who is the weakest?
I mean, yeah, like I mentioned Tennessee earlier, and I think that they have a chance to be pretty special on the offensive line.
They've got some continuity there.
LSU is probably my highest variance because they have a guy who's probably going to be a top-ten pick in Jordan Seaton that they got from Colorado.
So, you know, if he stays healthy and he can, you know, clear the way, I mean, that's when you have that talent anchoring left tackle, you know, like Trevor Doosby at Texas, who's also another potential first-round pick next year.
But, you know, it starts there, you know, protecting your quarterback's blind side and set the end point for the run game.
And, you know, LSU lost a couple of guys to Texas A&M from last year's line, but last year's line wasn't super good.
So, you know, I think that's a line to watch is LSU if they, you know, spent their money wisely in the portal, which I think that they mostly did.
And Lane Kiffin's earned that title for a reason.
I think, you know, Mizzou is up there, Mizzou's offensive line.
I know it lost the top player, but, you know, Caden Green is a beast up there, and they have some depth and experience returning.
Of all the playoff contenders, though, that I have on my list in that top seven in my power rankings, Texas A&M is the offensive line that I'm most concerned about.
You know, they've brought in a guy from Alabama and a guy from South Carolina, and they've brought in a couple guys from LSU, and those offensive lines were what you were good last year.
So now they not only leave weak offensive lines, but they have to, you know, replace Parker Brailsford.
They have to, you know, they have to replace, you know, guys that they're plugging an Alabama guy in there that didn't have success alongside Parker Brailsford and Kane Proctor and others.
So, you know, I think that Texas A&M, it's going to be tough for them to get those new guys to gel from their, you know, old schools.
And if they have any sort of trip up early in the season, I mean, heck, they went 11-1 in the regular season last year and didn't even miss the SEC championship game.
So if they have any sort of stumble early in the season, that's going to be tough to overcome.
Wilkins Formby is the Alabama player that you mentioned at right tackle.
I know you've got Texas at number one, and they're certainly loaded.
I mean, Trevor Goosby is one of the best offensive linemen.
Colin Simmons and Biles are incredible players.
To me, this year, maybe Wilmushchemp is the difference for Texas.
I know you've got them right, number one, Georgia at number two.

Man, I am ready for some football, man.
I'm so excited.
I mean, it's here almost.
And, you know, high school football starts up here in a week here in Tennessee.
I'm not sure about there in Alabama, but then we've got, you know, week zero.
Yes, I know it's not the greatest lineup in the world, but it beats nothing.
So, yeah, I'm ready for it, man.
It's like this, Jim.
It may be that the prom's coming up.
It may not be the date you want, but, hey, it's getting close, so let's go, right?
You got that right.
You got that right.
First yes is in, I guarantee you, Jim, for that week zero.
Let's talk a little bit about high school football.
You think a lot of Tennessee fans are going to be watching Baylor's opening game for a special reason?
Oh, yeah.
I mean, you know, it's a big-time matchup they've got.
And, you know, David Gabriel George is on the team there.
And, listen, there's a little quarterback there, last name Manning.
He may see a little bit of playing time this year.
So, listen, that's a powerful high school football team that got down there in Chattanooga.
And they're one of the elite high school programs in this entire country.
So, yeah, a lot of people will be watching.
And they're all praying, please don't get hurt, you know?
I hear you.
Jim, they actually opened, I believe, last week.
And on George's first carry of the season, he ran 57 yards, broke four tackles, and scored a touchdown.
Yeah, that's correct.
It probably surprises nobody.
In a, I guess, a jamboree type game.
Yeah, right.
He looked the part, man.
He's the real deal.
There's no question.
He's already earning his money.
Jim, before we get into some of the X's and O's and the Jimmy's and Joe's, let's talk court stuff and how it's shaping up college football this year.
Everybody's busy trying to make a living, and can we sit here and underestimate the power of that ruling by those crazy Colorado judges?
We saw Indiana's going to benefit from it.
Mississippi State looks like they're going to get a pair of former dogs back home because of that ruling.
Your thoughts about the ruling and how it's going to impact this season?
It's one of those quiet things but could have a major impact after all is said and done.
Well, I mean, we've got judges making rulings and, you know, laws trump rules every time, and it's frustrating for me because I don't think they have the sport's best interest in mind.
They're looking at it from their client's point of view, not that point of view exclusively, and to me, it messes up a lot more.
To me, it does more harm than good.
And, listen, I was one of the loudest when it came to Diego Pavi, in my personal opinion, should not have been able to play last year for Vanderbilt.
I said that from the get-go, and I stuck to my end up because I believe that junior college starts at the junior college level.
It always has, so all of a sudden it didn't start.
So, you know, stuff like this, and for crying out loud, I read just today that there's a judge that made some kind of a ruling for a Little League team from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
So, I mean, where do we – we're getting judges to make rulings.
They've got big egos, man.
And there's supposedly a kid that's ineligible is now eligible based on the ruling of a judge.
Yeah, Jim, that was two of Mississippi State's best defensive players are going to be able to play another year.
I got amused.
Texas SID office sent out a clip Saturday night of Cam Coleman reaching back and making a one-handed catch of a ball.
And Texas put it out there, of course, to show how good Cam Coleman is because it was just a circus catch.
By Sunday morning, the Post had drawn 8.5 million impressions, and most of the Texas fans were not applauding the catch.
They were talking about the poor throw by a quarterback, probably Arch Manning.
Social media never fails to amaze me, Jim.
Listen, it's kind of like when you have your spring game, you know.
If there's a nice, long throw, you know, half the fans are excited.
Man, what a great throw.
Those fans are like, our defense, you know, you can't play with everyone.
That's just the world we live in.
There's a good side and a bad side literally to everything.
Well, it's the short fanatics, the short form before that is fans, so that's where they get that three-letter word there.
Jim Gomb hooking up with us, Sports Blitz.
I can hook up with Jim here in a sec, but first-year coaches, there's a lot of them, Jim.
Who's going to have the best first-year run in the SEC?
Oh, man, you know, it's easy to say, you know, Lane Kiffin.
I mean, he's the easy guy.
I mean, as far as turning around a program, I mean, I think that Ryan Silverfield, I think he's going to do pretty good at Arkansas.
Obviously, a big hill to climb there.
I really like Alex Gold.
I think I've told you guys that.
I like him a lot.
And then, I guess Pete Golding is still considered a newcomer in the SEC, even though he's got three games under his belt.
But Jon Sumrall at Florida, and there's the program that I believe that Florida, when everything is clicking on all cylinders,
is one of the most lucrative jobs in the entire country.
And I think because they've got so many great athletes in their backyard, so I think that it's going to probably end up being Lane Kiffin.
But I'm going to keep my eye on what's going on there with Florida and Jon Sumrall.
I think he's going to have them in a good place by the end of the year.
I'm not saying they're going to win the SEC, but I think I could see an eight-and-four season or maybe somewhere in that vicinity.
Jim, I was going to say, even if his ceiling is only seven-and-five, we discussed that in our opening segment,
that's a far cry from four-and-eight.
Florida just needs some hope.
Jim, I think, again, they just want to see win line scrimmage, be aggressive, run the football, stop the run.
I think Florida fans right now would be beside themselves to go seven-and-five and win some tough games.
Yeah, absolutely, they would.
And, you know, I mean, to think that that program has been where they've been the last few years is really mind-blowing,
because to me, Florida's one of the best jobs in this country.
It should be one of the great jobs in this country.
Absolutely.

How are you?
Yeah, football is here.
Preseason is gearing up just a couple weeks before college football.
It is almost time.
So, Bruce, the big question is, what are the odds that Lane Kiffin will stay off social media for any appreciable period of time?
Off the board.
I mean, I wouldn't even quote a price on it.
And the sports world will love it.
It's like a day-by-day thing for him.
I told those guys down in Baton Rouge that Jimmy Odden, Charlie Hennigriff, and those guys, you're going to love Kiffin.
I mean, he's going to give you something to talk about every single day.
And, you know, the one thing about Kiffin, though, is, I mean, he does have this innate ability to infuriate people.
It's really interesting when you go back to that very short stint he had in the NFL with the Raiders.
And this is one of Al Davis' last acts, public acts.
When he fired Kiffin, if you remember, he went out on a PowerPoint presentation in front of the media, which he never did.
Davis fired a lot of coaches.
He disliked Kiffin so much.
I mean, he had to go out and, like, justify it to the media.
And usually it was just an announcement from Davis, but he disliked him so much.
But, you know, you talk to those guys who covered Ole Miss, like Brett and, you know, in Memphis and Michael Borky and Richard Cross.
And then they all kind of liked Kiffin.
They said he wasn't a guy to be around for it, which they didn't feel that way about all the Ole Miss coaches.
But they said he was actually kind of a fun guy to be around.
So I think they'll enjoy him down there until they won't.
At some point, it'll get a different overload.
But right now, a little honeymoon for everybody there.
He is going to love him because he's exactly what they're looking for.
He reminds us.
He reminds you, Bruce.
Remember when you were in school?
There's always that bad guy behind you that won't flip you in the ear.
And then the teacher would blame you for complaining.
Lane Kiffin is that guy that wants to be the naughty boy, and then he wants to break out his dimples, and he's so innocent.
He's like, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, be that as that may, Lane's going to be Lane.
Your thoughts right now, what is the one story across the college landscape that Vegas says you better watch out for them?
Because everybody's in love with Ohio State, and rightfully so.
Everybody's in love with Texas, rightfully so.
But right now, what is the quiet story from a Vegas perspective coming into the college season?
Harold, keeping on the Lane subject, I actually think LSU is one of the stories.
And Lane's dominating a lot of the stuff.
But the team, the team itself, I think, really intrigues.
And the fact they picked up, and we mentioned this before, they picked up Sam Levitt from Arizona State.
I think that was the quarterback.
That was a dynamite move.
Now, he did get hurt midway through last year.
But if you remember how he broke out like gangbusters two years ago for Kenny Dilliam and the Sun Devils,
he was spectacular, and he was regarded as a definite NFL first-round pick if he came out after last year.
But the injury, and that kind of pushed things back.
And so he decided one more year to play at college and move to the SEC at LSU and see what happens.
But they're flying a bit under the radar because there's a lot of SEC teams that seem to be picked up there really high.
And LSU's just in the mix.
But I think, you know, if Levitt is as good as he could be, as he was two years ago, that's the side that could emerge.
So I would really watch that.
The other one, the intriguing one, I think, is in the Big Ten, and we might have touched upon this before.
But this Kyle Whittingham hire at Michigan, really, from all angles,
first of all, how Whittingham ended up there, how he left Utah, we thought he was retired for good.
And then all of a sudden there he shows up, Michigan, and then the stuff going on behind the scenes with the AD and all.
His reputation is very good.
I mean, a guy coming in there to clean, a new sheriff in town to clean up the stuff.
Kind of reminds me when Bob Knight got to Indiana, what, 55 years ago?
Same sort of thing.
Whittingham's got that sort of a rep.
Now can he get Michigan back up to speed?
That's something we're really going to watch in the Big Ten this year.
So I think those are two very, very intriguing storylines with new coaches.
And there will be several of those sorts of new coach storylines.
But those two, I think, really jump out at me.
I agree with you.
I almost thought Whittingham was an SEC-caliber coach, physical, defense.
Let me ask you about the team lane left with Ole Miss.
Trinidad, Chambliss, and Kiwan Lacy are probably one or two in their top respective positions in the SEC.
They've got a good defense, Will Eccles, Centarian Perkins, and Tony O'Kite comes from Alabama.
Denson is pretty good.
I think there are people overlooking Ole Miss.
Again, they've got a little bit tougher schedule, particularly in the middle of the year when you've got LSU, Florida, Vandy, Missouri, Texas, Auburn, Georgia, Oklahoma.
Ouch.
That's quite a gauntlet itself.
Your thoughts on the Rebels?
Yeah, I could have easily substituted them in there as one of these teams to watch that people weren't looking at as much,
although there are a lot of holes having like a top-ten team.
How Pete Golding does now with a full offseason as a runway.
He had a couple games there last year.
I'm a little bit more cautious on Ole Miss, and I'll tell you why.
Because I do think Lane had a lot to do with Chambliss developing the way he did last year.
And his departure, I know Chambliss played very well those two games after Lane left.
But not having him there, that might be a negative.
And I don't know that it's a positive any.
So I think there's a chance that could go a little sideways without Lane there.
And Chambliss has got to live up to it.
I would also point out, I think in Ole Miss' case, it's all that opener with Louisville,
which is taking place in Nashville, that's a Sunday game, September 6th.
I think that's actually a bigger game for Ole Miss than it is for Louisville.
And it's a game Ole Miss could lose.
And if they did, all of a sudden then the pressure ratchets up about ten times on goalie.
So I really think that, you know, Ole Miss, I'm really kind of a wait and see here.
And you mentioned that down the stretch schedule there.
That is pretty darn tough.
They also, by the way, the game they're all talking about, you know,
Brett's all excited and all the Ole Miss people is when LSU goes to Oxford in September 19th.
So between that game and then the opener with Louisville,
if Ole Miss is 3-0 after that stretch, look out.
But if, you know, 1-2 it's possible, then it's going the wrong way.
We'll see.
Bruce, you may have to go to Oxford and hold Brett Norsworthy down for that week of that game.

Bruce, I don't know how in the world these people put together a poll,
but be that as it may they have, you see Alabama anywhere from 11.
The latest is from on3.com.
They got them at 14.
The significance of that is that's the lowest since the second year of one Nick Saban in 2008.
As we put it before, if you are 18 years old, you've never seen Alabama this low in a preseason poll.
In other words, if you're a high school senior or college freshman, this is a first.
Is Alabama too high or too low?
Auburn is not ranked in the top 25.
A lot of folks are in love with the potential there.
So too high or too low for Alabama and Auburn in some of these polls?
Harold, I think it's actually about right.
I would put them just outside the top 10.
But if you're there, you're sort of lurking and you can make a quick move back into the top 10
if things start off on a good note.
But you're not overstretching it.
And because they're breaking a new quarterback this year, whoever it's going to be,
that's enough reason there given that there's a lot of returning quarterbacks.
You just mentioned Chambliss and Leavitt, some of the others in the SEC.
Michael Brown coming into Auburn.
Manny.
Yeah, the list goes on and on.
So I think that's actually about right.
But this is, what are we, August 11th today?
I mean, September 11th, October 11th, things could be.
We weren't even talking about the preseason poll.
But for right now, I think that's about right for Alabama.
It's just there's so many SEC teams that you've got jammed in up there.
I just don't know how this thing is going to end up shaking out.
But right now, I think that's about a proper spot for the tight.
Yeah.
Bruce, thank you at all, everything that goes into that ranking.
But I've seen two rankings this week about SEC coaches versus AP Top 25.
And quite frankly, these are coaches across the nation.
Kirby Smart is in the SEC a second at 42 and 17.
He's got an all-time winning percentage against AT Top 25 of 7-11.
Well, guess who's first?
Helen DeBoer's 20 and 6, 77%.
That's not too bad either.
Not too bad.
And I'm one of those who is in Helen DeBoer's corner.
I mean, I think he's awfully good.
And I actually, and we might have touched upon this before,
I actually think his demeanor is actually just what the doctor ordered.
Because he's very, you know, he doesn't seem too flappable and he's very, you know, calm.
And that pressure cooker, and that's what it is in Tuscaloosa.
I mean, a coach, you could easily get distracted by all that.
And, you know, like Bill Curry many years ago just couldn't take it after he was in there, too.
And he just had to leave town.
So, I think that's actually pretty good.
No, I'm a big DeBoer fan.
I think he's just what the doctor ordered coming in in a near impossible situation
to come in to replace a legend like Coach Saban.
So, I think he's doing just fine.
I hope Tide fans are patient with him.
And like we said before, I think at some point maybe he just decides maybe this is too much pressure.
But he doesn't outwardly give that impression.
It just doesn't, things seem to roll off his back, which I think is probably a good trait to have.
I still say, be careful what you wish for.
Sometimes fans fail to realize that door swings both ways.
So, what happens if he wants to hit the exit door?
Bruce, what about the, to me, a guy that was a rock star,
and now it's like everybody's putting a question mark over his head by the name of Davos Sweeney.
What should we expect in Clemson?
See, down here we spell it with a P, in Clemson this year.
Good question.
I was in Charlotte a few weeks ago talking to some people.
Oh, I had a thought about last year in particular with Clemson that for some reason,
and again, again, the importance of an opening game, circling back to the Ole Miss thing,
but that opener versus LSU last year, they got them in Clemson and Death Valley,
and they lost a close game.
But that just seemed to shake the confidence of this team right from the start.
I also think, it may have been just specific to last year,
but everybody was making such a big deal about these guys, the defensive linemen and all of them,
and they were all, you know, a lot of these guys drafted into the NFL,
and I kind of think they kind of lost sight of the immediacy of what they had to do last season.
They started looking at the NFL, and that's why you had some inconsistent performances from Clemson last year.
You had too much hype, too many guys looking at their NFL things,
and that's odd for a DAPO team to lose focus like that,
but I really think that happened to them last year,
and it's up to him to get this thing back on track.
And I'll admit, I'm a little disappointed that Klubnik's career didn't take off a little bit more than I thought.
I mean, I can remember right at the start, that first game we saw him against Georgia Tech,
but he was a freshman.
I said, you know, he's going to end up being a quarterback,
and I think I talked to Brett about that, and he agreed.
But he had some moments there, but not quite where he was.
I think he actually might be okay for the Jets coming up this season,
and he'll make the roster, and he may even, before the years are out,
he might even start for them.
But I think it's a combination of things.
Now they are flying a little bit more under the radar in the ACC coming into this season,
and they're barely in a couple of poles that are right near the edge of the top 25,
right in the 20-25 range.
So we will see, but I don't know how much pressure he's feeling there,
but I would have to think of another couple of lackluster years,
you know, he might feel so pressure.
He is starting to adapt to the portal and the transfer.
He was kind of, that was the other thing.
He was kind of slow, and he didn't like all the portal stuff in the nil.
He sort of had to begrudgingly come along.
We'll see.
That's another interesting storyline in the ACC for sure.
Who has a better year?
I think we may even alluded to this a couple weeks ago.
Matt Campbell at Penn State brought a lot of his players with him.
James Franklin moves to Virginia Tech.
I've seen projected wins.
Matt Campbell, I'm looking at a 9-3.
James Franklin, 8-4.
And they both may be a game or two below that.
Who has a better year?
Campbell?
James Franklin?
I think Campbell will have a better year.
It's just that the expectations are a little bit less for Virginia Tech
because they were, Virginia Tech was a bad team last year.
Yes.
A real under-team.
So, I mean, there's, you can, you know, I don't know that they're expecting more.
And I think, you know, the win total for Virginia Tech is up there higher,
pretty high for a team that had a struggling year like that.
And Franklin should make a difference.
But I think Campbell will.
He's brought a lot of his guys from Iowa State, including Rocco Beck, the quarterback.
We've talked about him before.
We like him a lot.
So there's a familiarity, and that's sort of, you know, what Cignetti was able to do at Indiana.
You're bringing his James Madison guys, what a lot of coaches transfer in.
You bring guys from your last, you know, stop.
And it's not just, you know, Campbell or Cignetti a couple years ago.
It's Bob Chesney at UCLA.
Charles Hoffman, Memphis, has brought most of Southern Miss' team with him from last year.
So they might be better than we think.
But I think Campbell will probably do okay.
And I have the absolute highest regard for Campbell.
Yes.
What he did at Iowa State.
And I had talked to him at a Big 12 day in the past.
He was one of the most intelligent.
You just tell a guy's really sharp when you talk to him.
And Campbell is a very, very intelligent guy.
So I think they hit a home run with that higher at Penn State.
Let me ask you what happened yesterday with the college football playoff committee.
They had another exercise in futility in meeting.
ESPN brought up their own playoff scenario.
I've seen that they wanted either 16 or 20.
But what caught my eye were the play-in games again.
Four play-in games which would, quote, make up for the loss of revenue for losing the conference championship game.
And the SEC's 80 to 100,000 or even more with a contract running out in 2031.
What the Big Ten wants, they want to go to 24 because ESPN's got the 16-team contract.
So Fox can bid on the extra eight teams.
But there's no way, to me, in my opinion, the SEC coaches would agree to a four-team playoff or play-in games when they're already grumbling about ending the ninth game with only one bye.
Yeah, I think that's going to be the big hurdle they're going to have to get over.
And I don't know how they're going to resolve it because it doesn't seem that the SEC is very reluctantly, you know, signing on to this stuff.
And those levels are not signing on at all.
So I think that's still to be determined.
Usually in this stuff, you know, money wins.
And wherever, in the end, where they get the most money in this stuff, that will determine it.
But there are still some different parts here.
You've got to remember, these guys are already making a lot of money from this stuff.
So it's not like they're not making money and they're throwing more at them.
The SEC guys also want to sort of keep, well, obviously, you know, the revenue from the conference title game is big.
They'd have to replace that.
But a competitive edge, this is the other thing they don't talk about too much.
But I don't know that Greg Sankey, and this could go for Petiti and the Big Ten, too, although they seem a lot more gung-ho about expanding the playoffs.
But to sort of relinquish that sort of grip they have on this thing, and then you're putting more spots in there for the ACC or the Big 12.
Now, if you told the SEC and the Big Ten all these extra spots are going to go to your teams, I think they would probably sign on a lot quicker because that's more money in the pot for them.
But they don't want any bit of surrendering that sort of edge that they have right now.
And, again, the SEC seems more reluctant to go along than the Big Ten, which is pushing this a little harder.
But I think that's also at the base of a lot of what they're thinking.
Absolutely.
Well, one thing for sure, we are one week closer, Bruce Marshall, to toe-meeting leather with week zero and then week one.
You are still the gold standard.
Where can we get online and get all the good stuff?
Yeah, in NFL preseason.
You know, we're actually going to the Raider game on Thursday.
They got preseason and got these prices like really low, like $15 for a day.
Oh, man.
Let's go.
They wouldn't do that the regular season, so we'll see it up close and personal.
But I'll have a pick on that game and some more NFL preseason this week.
In the past, we've done pretty well in the NFL preseason.
And, of course, baseball is going really good.

Two members of Congress who represent Alabama are supporting President Trump and his recent executive order on the vaccine schedule for children.
President Trump signed the EO on Monday with the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert Kennedy Jr., present during that time.
The EO reduces the amount of recommended vaccines for children, lowering it down to only 11.
The president's executive order also splits up the MMR vaccine to individual shots regarding measles, mumps, and rubella.
U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville and Congressman Barry Moore publicly applauded this move.
Tuberville says that American kids are the most vaccinated they've ever been, and yet the rates of autism, childhood cancer, and autoimmune diseases continues to increase.
Congressman Moore says this move by Trump puts parents back in the driver's seat when it comes to their children's health, rather than Washington bureaucrats.

A sergeant with the Mobile County Sheriff's Department plans to plead guilty to federal charges of bank fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion.
52-year-old Daniel Holyfield was charged with using his position to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars between January 2021 and May of 2023.
This involved Holyfield getting a hold of payments that were going out to vendors from the sheriff's office,
as well as intercepting insurance checks for claims that were being made by the sheriff's office.

As you catch that offensive lineman, that seems to be a topic these days.

How are you?
Doing good, guys.
Hope you are all as well.
Hey, buddy.
Man, we're doing all right.
William, obviously, it's one thing to get in the early drills.
Everybody is fresh.
Everybody's rocking and rolling.
But come Thursday, correct us if we're wrong, William, it's the first big scrimmage.
That's when it gets serious.
What's the old saying?
A little slobber knocking going on.
Coming in the scrimmage, William, obviously, a lot of positions you're going to be looking at.
But I got a feeling I know the answer to this question.
In particular, what are you going to be focusing on?
And as a former offensive lineman, could it be the offensive line?
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
You know, I'm interested in, you know, a couple things.
You know, how the competition, you know, is it legit?
You know, now that the pads are on, are we still going to, you know, have, you know,
Mal Waldrop and William Sanders, you know, fighting it out for left guard?
You know, what's the pecking order going to look like?
You know, not necessarily when the lights go on Thursday, but, you know, when there's actually a, you know,
a scrimmage in Bryant-Denny Stadium, if in fact they do go to the stadium for the scrimmage.
Kalen DeBoer's, you know, kept him at the practice facility before, but I'm assuming it's going to be at the stadium.
You know, is James got that right tackle spot and nailed down?
Is QB Reese going to be the, you know, the second inside linebacker there, you know, next to Woodson,
the transfer from Virginia Tech?
So, you know, I think there's a lot of things.
You know, I think so far, although today's just the first day in full pads, that, you know,
at least they haven't had any, you know, non-contact injuries up to this point,
or at least any that's been reported.
But, you know, the obvious one is, you know, what's the pecking order going to look like at quarterback?
So, you know, a lot of things to, you know, kind of, you hate to wish your life away,
but, you know, a lot of things to point to as we get closer to that first biggie of the fall camp Thursday.
You mentioned the quarterback.
How do you react to the news?
Obviously, you probably can get into Fort Knox season when you get into some of these practices,
but based on the vibe that we are getting, the word is, in general, as far as what we're able to gather,
is there's not a lot of separation between the two, which means either both these guys are all that in a bag of chips,
or maybe they've still got some work to do.
How do you analyze when you hear there's not a lot of separation at this point,
or is that just coach speak to keep the metal sharpening metal at this point,
and in this day and time to keep them away from thinking about down the road of heading out of town?
Well, you know, I don't think it's unexpected.
You know, I think, you know, going all the way back to, you know, spring practice, you know, back in the middle of March,
when, you know, you've got some of these, you know, reports that, you know, yeah, obviously Keelan Russell is the future.
You know, when does that future happen?
Yeah, he's so dynamic, he's so explosive, but, you know, they're on the same breath.
But make no mistake, Austin Mack is an NFL quarterback.
Yeah, amazing.
You know, so it's a, you know, do I think it's a, you know, to use a Saturday night wrestling term from the 80s,
do I think this is a loser Leaf Town match?
Yes, I do.
But, you know, we just got to wait and let it play out.
But I still kind of lean towards, you know, sitting here game week, you know, before East Carolina,
that, you know, this thing may spill over into the season.
It wouldn't surprise me, and it wouldn't be the first time that it has.
And to be honest with you, it's not a bad problem to have.
You know, it's a much better problem than many, many years I've been looking at the calendar,
you know, middle of August, and you're like, you know, for the love of God,
please don't let anything happen to the starting quarterback, because there's not another one
that's capable of playing in the locker room.
So, you know, this is a, this is, you know, while it can be a divisive problem, I think,
you know, for fans to filter through, it's not a bad problem for a head coach, Pat.
Well, William, you've been there and done that, as Harold mentioned, for the first scrimmage
of summer camp.
We know the coach is going to be looking at separation for some of the positions that you
mentioned, and particularly on the offensive line.
What are the other goals for the coaches?
Are they doing some situational red zone two-minute?
What are the goals for the coaches going into the first scrimmage of summer camp?
Well, I mean, I think if you're looking at a, you know, a specific room, you know, a position
room or a specific position, you know, if the starter's already been established, you know,
going into the first scrimmage, you know, you're looking for, you know, the next man up.
You're looking at, you know, establishing depth, you know, hey, is this true freshman defensive
lineman that showed up 25 pounds heavier than we were anticipating?
Is this guy going to be somebody that we can count on to, you know, play meaningful snaps?
And that's across the board at, you know, multiple positions.
So, you know, they're looking for depth because that's a premium these days.
You know, especially when, you know, you look at this through the lens of a coach, you know,
that they don't have two-a-day practices anymore.
They don't have consecutive full pad practices anymore.
So from a coaching perspective, you've got a limited opportunity for evaluations.
But at the same time, when you flip it over to the player side, you've got limited opportunities
to make your case.
And, you know, you better, like, these two scrimmages are very, very, you know, have a
very premium price tag on them all of a sudden when you really start looking at what fall camp
is these days.
And it's not the two weeks of two-a-day practices with, you know, multiple days in a row of fall,
of full pads practices when you're, despite not being probably somebody that's on the dean's
list in school, man, you're praying for that first day of school to get here, just so you
can get a break.
I don't think the junction boys are going to be labeled with these modern practices these
days.
In the huddle with William Redfish Barger, the reports we're getting out of the strength
and conditioning against August Room is this is a tougher group.
They focused on getting in better shape, developing a nasty attitude.
To me, that's an intangible that you can't emphasize or overemphasize enough.
What are you hearing about something that's been missing in the last two years?
And that's a bunch of guys who chew up nails and spit bullets.
Well, my first response would be on the same stuff we heard last year.
You know, are they going to go out against East Carolina and prove that lip service to be true?
You know, because I think what we saw last year shows me that somebody that was passing that
statement along or floating it out there to the media, you know, didn't know what they
were talking about.
Now, that team did prove later on that fall that, you know, they were, you know, close to
being that team that was talked about all summer long.
They, you know, they, they had a chance to, you know, make up for that, but you know, that
those kind of, uh, yeah, you saw the, the environment that that collapse in game one
against you created amongst the fan base.
I mean, I'm sure, you know, for guys like you that are, you know, in the media every day,
uh, made your job easier.
Cause you didn't have to come up with talking points.
The fan base created that talking point for you.
So, you know, yeah, I mean, I'd love for that to be true, but you know, those things aren't
developed.
They, they start in the summer conditioning program, but those things are developed in the
locker room and in that, on that practice field in the heat of August.
And, you know, it's not something, you know, the best teams that I've seen, um, don't talk
about those things.
They, they show up and put that, put that in play, you know, on Saturdays when, when, you
know, toe meets leather.
Let me ask you about what you've heard.
Um, you mentioned Mal Waltrip.
I've heard a lot of good things about him in that battle, obviously at, at left guard,
Justin Hill has put on about 30 pounds since the day he walked in the door.
I've heard Luke Mads has had a good summer camp.
Even Marion Latham, um, has been a pleasant surprise.
Of course, he's been there quite a while.
What are some of the names you've heard who've actually had a pretty good summer camp?
Well, you know, I, I would say the, you know, the Waldrop news is probably, you know, intriguing
to me the most right now because you're actually seeing some other guys get work at that backup
center.
So, you know, that tells me that they feel like this is a legit competition.
And, and, you know, that just, um, you know, makes the depth situation at offensive line, you
know, an, an area that, that this team has certainly been focused on, um, you know, from
Kalen DeBoer to Ryan Grubb to Adrian Clem.
Um, but you know, I, I think the one that I'm most interested in because he was a guy that,
um, you know, I felt like probably was flirting with being one of the best five last year.
I'll be, he didn't get the opportunity to prove that, but I think the 26 pounds added to Jackson
Lloyd, um, is the one that intrigues me the most, a, that's a tall task for a six foot six, six
foot seven guy to do, um, you know, that are typically labeled hard gainers as far as adding,
you know, good weight like that.
Um, because there is a lot of, you know, not just by me, but based on his recruiting profile,
based on the expectations, based on the way you saw Ryan Grubb come out day one of spring
practice and name him the starting left tackle, obviously that's proven to be true.
But, you know, I think there's quietly a lot of expectations being placed on this young man.
And I felt like when he was being recruited, you know, he had a chance to be a special
player.
When I, when I throw that label on somebody, I'm saying a three and done first round draft
pick.
And I felt like once the two other sports that he played in high school drifted further into
his rear view mirror, he had a chance to be football focused only that the weight would
come.
And I mean, I'm just excited to see what his skillset looks like as a first year starter in
what, in my opinion, is one of the top three most difficult positions to play at this
level in college football.
Well, you should do it.
You know, I mean, folks are just so proud.
You said there's such a thing as good adding weight.
So that's, that's, that's refreshing for a lot of folks.
Yeah, yeah, no, this isn't two years ago where we're throwing five, you know,
double quarterbusters with Jesus out there, weighing 346.
This is a good way.
There you go.
In your opinion, to me, you wouldn't ask this question,
who is the X factor on this team?
Take your pick.
But I would imagine Ryan Coleman Williams would be in the discussion
because coming out of high school, like you mentioned with Lloyd,
he has so much potential.
Last year was that sophomore slump.
Your thoughts when asked who, in your opinion, might be the X factor on this team?
Oh, God, man, I think there's so many of them.
And, you know, kudos to Ryan.
And then, you know, I think when you look at it, you know,
what happened to him last year isn't uncommon.
You know, his true freshman year exploded onto the scene.
But, you know, he didn't have that pressure on him.
And a lot of times when a guy becomes a star like that quickly, you know,
they don't necessarily have the mental capabilities.
I'm not going to romanticize y'all with how young he's been the whole time
he's been there like everybody does.
But, you know, I think, you know, finding that third and fourth wide receiver,
you know, behind Williams and, you know, with the injury to Rodgers,
I think, you know, obviously Sundari and Morgan, the other six-foot-five guys' name escapes me right now.
Yeah, man, just...
Oh, yeah, Meadows.
I think, you know, those two guys are the leaders in the clubhouse.
And, you know, looking more and more like maybe Rodgers will be back sooner rather than later,
but obviously not for the season opener.
But, you know, finding that guy, whether it's Justin Hill,
that becomes the edge rusher that complements Yonsei Pierre.
You know, I think you could just go from position to position.
You know, who's going to be, you know, RB1 by the time they get into the SEC schedule.
I think that's an intriguing thing.
All of a sudden, you know, AK Deer's making some noise.
Yes, yes.
You know, you've still got the spring practice, you know, breakout guy Brown.
So, I mean, you go from position to position,
we still could be talking about who the starting quarterback is before they get into SEC play.
So, I mean, this team really, I think, for a fan or somebody that's in the media
that talks about this stuff or thinks about it a lot,
I mean, this is a very intriguing team.
And, you know, I think the coaching staff has, you know,
got a unique opportunity to play off of, you know, hey, we're getting,
we're not getting any respect by opponents and the media.
They don't expect much from us.
You know, that's a strong motivation factor.
I mean, you might see a team that, unlike last year, comes out, you know,
playing like a team that wants respects and feels disrespected by not getting preseason hype.
So, there's a lot of, I think, moving pieces going into this 20-2016.
By the way, just to reiterate your point about Jackson Lloyd,
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic comes out with what he calls the all-freak team.
He had 100 players.
Jackson Lloyd was number 13.
I thought that was amazing.
Again, as you mentioned, at 673, he can bench 505 and 760 squat, but he can move.

How are you?
I'm good, gentlemen.
How are we doing?
Hey, buddy.
And they tell me that the best job security an athletic director can have is come up with a record $175.5 million like AD at UT Danny White.
Is he going to change it from the Big Orange to the Big Gold, Vince?
Well, the Big Green.
Yeah.
Yeah.
They're all connected, for sure.
So, yeah, the green is getting them the gold, which is getting them the orange, and that's fans in the stands, and everything improves.
So, it's all connected, for sure.
It's not surprising.
Fifty in a row, they've had record donations.
And so, you know, the money that they're pouring back in, in terms of upgrading facilities and the cost of doing business and all that kind of fun stuff, not surprising.
But, yeah, the donors, the fans, they're invested in trying to help Tennessee win, and it's showing out in those numbers.
Here's the deal, Vince.
It's good on the front end to have that money, but they tell me that human nature says, okay, we've done our part.
Now we want an ROI, return on the investment.
Your thoughts about Tennessee fans coming in, the expectations put on Josh Hopple.
I saw one of the polls today.
They're basically somewhere almost in the middle of the pack of the SEC.
If you're going to lay down that kind of cash, the fans, and especially the deep-seated pocket donors, they want to return.
Your thoughts just about the mindset coming in for this coaching staff?
Yeah, I think there are expectations.
And you know how it goes for every fan base.
The closer you get to the season, the more people start to buy in, the positives.
And, you know, if this happens, if this happens, then we can do this.
And people are doubting us, all that kind of fun stuff.
So I don't think it's so out of whack.
I've seen it more out of whack in years past than with teams in the past.
But I don't think it's like anyone's talking about national championship or anything to where you're not going to reach that.
And it's unrealistic for the coaching staff.
I think they want to see improvement.
They want to see them beat the teams that are better than them, beat some of them, and then, you know, not lose games to teams that you're supposed to on paper.
So, yeah, and then how competitive are you in those games?
But certainly Danny White at all of the athletic department is judged on how football does.
That's by far the biggest piece of the pie.
So they've got to hold their own in terms of that return on investment, for sure.
But I don't think it is unrealistic right now when fans, you know, are looking at eight or nine wins.
Nine, they'd have to have really good quarterback play in addition to improvement on defense.
I am very confident in the defense getting better as long as they don't keep sustaining injuries, which they've already had a couple of reserves.
But, yeah, if they get both improved defense and pretty good quarterback play, now that's when you can get into the nine conversation.
But, yeah, it's there.
The expectations are always there at Tennessee.
Yeah, you alluded to it.
Tennessee linebacker Jane Harmon will miss the 2026 season with a torn ACL.
I believe I read Ty Redman has been sick, been out with an illness, but should be back soon.
Ethan Davis got banged up a little bit.
V, we could ask you about 20 players, but what have you heard?
What have you seen as far as players having a good summer camp?
Well, first on the availability, it's not a long list.
BB, so I'll just hit on it real quick.
Redman was back at practice this morning.
Okay.
Now, he wasn't doing everything, so it's a ramp-up.
They have their first scrimmage on Saturday, so I wouldn't anticipate.
Brett Hubs didn't anticipate that he would take part in that since he hasn't really practiced until today.
And then you mentioned Ethan Davis.
Ethan Davis is so talented.
He's Tennessee's tight end one, but he hasn't been able to stay healthy for a full season.
And he's already missing a little bit of time, so that's not good.
He's not supposed to be out very long.
We'll see on that.
But they need him because it's pretty young behind him.
And then two players are gone for the year.
You mentioned Harmon.
He was basically in Tennessee's linebacking group, so special teams and a little bit of reserve possibility.
And the other is Jadis Richard, who transferred from Miami, a cornerback that was at Vanderbilt previously.
So he has powerful experience at two different schools.
Probably he was competing to be Tennessee's third or fourth corner.
So that's one less body there, especially one with experience that they'll have.
So it thins them out a little bit there.
As far as guys that have had good summers, Xavier Gilliam, defensive tackle, transfer from Penn State.
He's one that not only defensive linemen have brought up, but Tennessee's offensive linemen have brought up as well,
including Jesse Perry when I asked him about going up against the D-line today.
Aaron Carter looks great.
The linebackers overall, Jeremiah D-Lander, who I was a little worried about
in terms of his – he's another linebacker's two-year starter for Tennessee.
I was worried about him sliding down the list, the order in the linebackers.
But he is really connected with Jim Knowles, and he is always heaping praise on him.
And, you know, he's always getting, you know, about ball and getting stronger.
He's got to be better in pass coverage.
So maybe he has been.
We haven't seen a lot of that team stuff.
And then, you know, several wide receivers have looked good.
I think that's an area if you're looking for one position group that has probably looked better than I,
or maybe some others, anticipated as a collective.
It's the wide receivers.
Tyree King, a four-star that came in in the summer from Knoxville Catholic.
He has looked like he didn't.
He was here for the spring.
He doesn't look like a freshman.
He's jumped right in.
I asked him about being the pumper turner.
How bad do you want to do that?
He's like, oh, man, so bad.
So he is really dynamic and electric in space.
And then Staley and Matthews, who were there last year, two-year guys under Hyphel's system.
I haven't seen either one of them put one ball on the ground in our viewing period.
Those guys look like they're ready to have an even better year.
Just got to figure out who that third wide receiver is, T.K. Keyes, Darius Jackson, or Travis Smith.
But it's been a really good group, not only in the spring and summer, but so far in preseason camp.
V, is there any wonder why Josh Hyphel got upset in a press conference talking about Arian Carter's suspension?
Bruce Feldman, who does this all-freak list on the athletic, he looks at the top 100 players,
guys who can bench, run fast, the whole nine yards.
Arian Carter is number six nationally on his freak list.
No wonder Josh Hyphel pitched a fit over that three-nail-two-game suspension.
No doubt.
He was 12 last year.
And with the strength and conditioning program, my goodness, so many guys are bigger, stronger, faster, more explosive.
That's one of the things, looking at them on the practice field, that is clear, that they are in so much better shape.
The D-line looks bigger and in better condition.
They have 47 guys running 21 miles per hour or faster when they only had 21 to start the spring.
So, you just see the difference in how they're playing and how they look out there on the field, and that's pre-pads, of course.
So, that area on Carter is absolutely a freak athlete.
And they are so deep at linebacker.
I think that's an area where they can get three or four guys onto the field, use them as pass rushers to overcome for not having that many true Leo pass rush bodies.
They have those guys in, like, four linebacker sets just to get your best 11 on the field because a lot of those guys are so athletic and twitchy.
Absolutely.
Yeah, Tennessee's biggest recruiting get, besides Gabriel George's, was the Indiana strength and conditioning director of V-Man.
No question about it.

college insider for the Orlando Sentinel, a host of Gridiron 365,
and sweating out some practices for UCF and Scott Frost.
Matt Michelle, welcome you to the show today, buddy.
How are you doing?
Good.
How are you guys doing today?
We're doing great.
Listen, I've got to read this to you first.
We've got a lot of things that we wanted to talk about.
But Akron is doing a promotion that their athletic director, let me see.
Yeah, Dr. Andrew Goodridge came up with.
He is the lucky winner that can be the offensive coordinator of the game,
which will be the first game of the season for Akron against Robert Morris.
Akron is the school that Terry Bowden was the coach at for years.
And when I first looked at this, I just kind of chuckled and was about to go on.
And then I got to looking at it.
The post to be the offensive coordinator has received 22 million views on X.
The season tickets at Akron are only $75, which astounds me.
But they have sold more season tickets in 17 years.
I've got to give them the credit.
Moorhead, Joe Moorhead, who was at Mississippi State, thought it was ridiculous.
Then he's kind of warmed up to it.
The athletic director's ingenuity has increased season tickets.
2009 was the last time they had this many.
Yeah, it's incredible what an athletic director has to do sometimes nowadays to try to build interest in your program.
And I mean, let's give them credit.
Akron has not been a program that has had much success over the last few years.
You want to find a way to get fans excited about your product.
Maybe throw them out there and offer them the opportunity to be an offensive coordinator for a while.
Yeah, again, I think it kind of falls to me in that line of what schools try to do with NIL,
where you offer opportunities to get fans engaged and spend money and raise money for your program.
It's going to be interesting, I think, whoever wins this.
I know that there was someone that told me there were some Robert Morris fans who were campaigning to try to go ahead and jump in there
and buy tickets and trash to try to win the opportunity to do the offensive play calling.
I mean, and give Joe Moorhead credit, too, because as much as this is a great idea on the sense of marketing,
as a college football coach, you don't want your program to become kind of a gimmick.
A gimmick, exactly, and so I think it's a challenge.
So, again, this is where some smaller schools, you've got to find whatever you can do to make sure your program is relevant in some ways.
There will be some relevancy in this first game, for sure.
Now, whether that transfers to the later on in the season and how the success they have remains to be seen.
But, listen, as a guy who's from the Mid-American Conference, I'm always excited to see Mac schools get some opportunities to come up and die.
No question about it.
Matt Merceau, College Insider for the Lando Sindel.
I mentioned Central Florida and Scott Frost.
How is camp going so far besides being hot as you know what?
Yeah, camp's been good.
You know, they just wrapped up last week, the first week of camp.
You know, this is a much more mature group, a lot more experienced group.
You know, they didn't have to spend a lot of time teaching these guys, you know, how to practice,
what's meant to be when you get on the practice field.
These are guys who've been around not only just the program, but other programs as well.
And so, they were able to step on the field and really kind of get things going.
I got a chance to watch a full practice on Saturday, which is a rarity in college football nowadays.
Yes.
The coach will allow media to watch a full practice, but we've got a chance to watch a full practice.
And, you know, they've got some things that they're excited about.
Alonzo Barnett, the third, their starting quarterback, they're excited about.
They're excited about some of their explosive playmakers, but there's some things they have to fix.
I mean, they know it's that.
We talked to Scott Frost the other day, and he talked a little bit about just, you know, trying to fix something.
They're trying to get things ready to go.
You're three or four weeks away from the start of the season.
All of a sudden, now, you've got to start getting all those little things that kind of creep up.
You know, guys get tired.
Guys not running fully.
Guys not willing to do the LSU effort.
You've got to make sure that continues to happen.
So, they're excited about it, and they feel like they've got an opportunity to creep up again this year.
So, it just means can they survive the heat over the next four weeks.
What are you hearing about Jon Sumrall at Florida?
We were talking about projections for them.
Man, if they go 7-5 this year, I know Florida fans, quote, would not be on the surface to be happy.
But after 4-8, and if they look aggressive and can run the ball and be physical,
I think they'd be more than happy to be 7-5 his first year.
I think Jon Sumrall would love to be 7-5, to be honest with you.
I think he understands this is the process.
You're not going to flip the script that quickly.
I think he's got a lot of good guys on this team.
He brought in a lot of transfers.
He feels like it could help this team.
But it's hard in today's day and age to really kind of find that success immediately, you know, to turn a team right away.
So, I think Jon Sumrall is trying to establish himself.
I know over the last couple weeks of practice, you know, they're trying to set things up.
They want to make sure that they're doing things the right way.
He's gotten rid of a lot of the music in, you know, the locker rooms.
He wants to make sure the guys are focused and locked in.
You want to establish your team's identity.
You want to make sure that there's a buy-in and that they understand that the last couple years, you know, have not been what you'd like to see from a Florida program.
So, you want to get back there.
You know, listen, it's hard to argue with against the guy who's had the success that Jon Sumrall has had in Tulane and some of the other stops.
So, you know, I think the Gators right now are excited about what they're doing.
You know, again, fans may not like the idea of, you know, a 7-5 season in Florida.
But considering it being year one and you're trying to recruit and you're trying to build a program, like I said, I think John would take that in a heartbeat if he felt like he could, you know, get some quality wins out there and prove that they're on the right track.
We'll close with Miami.
I know a lot of people are looking at them being certainly in the playoffs, maybe the final four.
Matt, what are you hearing out of Miami so far?
Yeah, I think Miami's, you know, in the same boat.
When you look around at Miami, it has a lot of confidence going into this year because of what happened last year.
You know, Mario Cristobal's got a new contract, new contract extension.
He's excited.
You know, they've got a program now that he feels like can contend.
They've got to find a way to get back to where they were last year.
You don't want to tail off.
You don't want to make it a one-year wonder type thing.
You want to go out there and find a way to have success.
And now that he's established how he wants this program to be, I think you're seeing the players that are there buying in.
You're seeing the players who are coming in, understanding what needs to be done.
This is a team right now, I think I've mentioned this before, they can control the ACC for the next couple of years.
There is no really big challenger.
Clemson's trying to get back to where it was.
Florida State's nowhere near and close to that.
You know, I think you've seen some other teams like Duke be out there as well.
But if you're Miami, you want to go out there and you want to win the ACC.
You want to get back to the playoff.
And you want to make a deep run.
You want to continue to put this kind of success ahead of you.
Because this is something that is the reason why, you know, Miami spent a lot of money to get Mario to come back and take over this program.
So it's going to be a challenge for them.
But I think that they're on the right track when it comes to their mentality.

More details are emerging when it comes to Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon and his sudden
announcement this week that he was resigning and not running for re-election this November.
Moon is asking for his name to be taken off the November ballot.
Moon and his wife now say that the family has suffered mental and physical stress due to
outrageous lies being posted against them.
Moon says his family has been subjected to this burden due to his job as sheriff.
Moon says this has negatively affected the health and well-being of his family,
and he is choosing them over his job.
Moon and his wife Kelly have been married for 26 years and have three children.

I began to pray for a place to go, praying for all of these things that a nine-year-old would want.

An inmate was found dead inside his cell in the Jefferson County Jail.
That inmate is identified as Gregory Johnson of Moody.
An autopsy has already been conducted with no evidence of foul play being found.
The actual cause of death is yet to be determined pending lab results.
The Hoover City Council voted against a proposal to de-annex property from the city
and make it part of unincorporated Shelby County.
This was being requested by Trinity Presbyterian Church so they could develop seven acres into a school.
City Council member Steve McClinton told 1819 News after the vote that
Trinity Presbyterian needed to do more when it comes to the conditional use application process to the city,
but also that the city needed to do a better job in removing red tape.
That has been making it harder for businesses and organizations to operate in Hoover.

Well, I think the concern, Harold, again, is do they have enough starting pitching?
Bryce Elder gave up a grand slam early in the game, and they actually came back and made it closer.

if they're starting pitching staff right now, that remains to be seen.
