It's time for the Valley's exclusive FM Sports Voice. The Boomo Bugg Show. New exclusive inside track to the Tigers, Tennessee and the rest of the SEC. Now your host, Harold Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Good afternoon and welcome into the Boomo Bugg Show. I'm Harold Bugg alongside Brett Beaird. Thank you so much for giving us free ride around the Tennessee Valley. Brett Beaird, welcome in with a question of the day is, how sweet is this year for the Braves? They don't play and they still increase their first place lead. Good afternoon, welcome in and how are you? Happy Tuesday to you and the listeners. And yes, the Phillies and the Mets managers are no longer employed either. That's quite interesting. We'll talk about the Braves a little bit later in the show. Well, Las Vegas insider Bruce Marshall recaps the NFL draft for us. Caleb Suggs of the Decatur Daily previews the second round of the high school baseball playoffs in North Alabama. And we are delighted to bring back Charlie Potter, good friend, who's going to join us right now to recap the NFL draft for Alabama and some of his questions for Alabama after a day. And that ain't all. CP is Charlie Potter, senior team writer, BamaOnline.com, part of the On3.com family. Charlie, welcome in. How are you? I'm great, guys. Thanks for having me. You're good. Man, we appreciate you taking time out. Charlie, how surprised were you at the Ty Simpson news? Not that he was drafted, but where and when he was drafted. Yeah, I mean, watching it on the couch like everybody else, obviously I had my laptop open ready for any news, like the Rams being there. And that was interesting because I think it makes a lot of sense. I think I said on a podcast of ours or something beforehand, like that would be a perfect fit because Matthew Stafford coming off an MVP season. But we know he's kind of entering the tail end of his career, but a chance to learn and kind of sit behind him, which I think would really benefit Ty Simpson at the next level. The still 13th was a little bit of a surprise. I thought it made a lot of sense for maybe a team to trade back into the first round to get him a team that really wanted him to have that fifth-year option. Because that's something people don't really take into consideration is those first round picks, they got that fifth-year option. And you're drafting a rookie quarterback, that's nice to have because you got to pay those guys if they pan out at least some big bucks. So a great landing spot for Ty. I know it's been a divisive pick of sorts, but I think it's great for him. And I think it's a team, too, that I know that their Super Bowl window is currently open, and you want to take advantage of that. But if you can also do that while getting ready for the future, I think it makes a lot of sense. Absolutely. CP, when this coaching staff sits down in a living room and tells a potential high school prospect, we can get you to the next level, to the NFL, to fulfill your dream, they can do it. Once again, 10. I'd read several. Well, I don't know if Alabama can get anyone in the first round, and that would break the record. Well, they got two. Then they end up getting 10. Joe Miller may have been a little bit of a surprise. Josh Quavis was not to me. But, Charlie, when they can tell a player and a family they can get them to the next level, they're not kidding. No, it's 10 selections. That's tied for the second most this year. I think Ohio State has had 11. And, you know, they had a ton of guys taken there on day one, especially, I think, in the top 11 picks. But that's, I think, 10 picks in seven of the last 10 NFL drafts for Alabama. They've had at least seven in 15 consecutive drafts. And, like you said, they extend their NCAA record for first-round picks in consecutive drafts to 18 years. And, honestly, the next year, I don't really see that flowing down. I think they'll get to at least 20 with this. Can't look that far ahead into the future. But it's just an impressive, impressive feat. And, yeah, I mean, you look at what they're able to do with landing top recruits, developing them. There's a lot of transfers that go on and, you know, have success in the next level, at least from a draft standpoint. Jeremy Bernard's the first player not coached by Nick Saban to be drafted by Alabama since 2007. But these guys, it's a h*** of a recruiting tool because I think their contracts are worth nearly a combined $95 million. And their signing bonuses is a hair over $37 million. Like, you take that into recruits' houses and show them, like, not only can you make money at the collegial level, but we're setting you up for generational wealth well beyond. $95 million. Nick Saban said, did Alabama ever get a bargain at a mere $4 million? Charlie Potter, senior team writer at BamaOnline.com. Charlie, talk to us about the pipeline continuing. Alabama gets a five-star quarterback again and again. What's in the sauce down there, Charlie? Yeah, the staff has three cycles in a row with a five-star quarterback signing because it started with Keelan Russell. Jed Tamala ended last year's cycle as a five-star. And then on Saturday, during day three of the draft, it was a busy Saturday for us covering the team, they landed Elijah Haven, five-star quarterback from Baton Rouge. And he's a guy that staff has been in on for a while now. I know Nick Sheridan, who's now moved on to Michigan State to be their offense coordinator, kind of helped develop and build that relationship. Brian Ellis, who's the new quarterback's coach, continued it. And then, of course, Ryan Grubb and Kalen DeBoer, Courtney Morgan. There's a ton of people I think deserve a lot of credit for this one. And second year in a row, Alabama's going to have a two-quarterback class because they have Trent Seaborn from Thompson High School committed right now. So it's a position that Alabama has recruited extremely well. They've had three five-stars, two four-stars under Kalen DeBoer so far. And look, you've got to recruit that position because it's one nowadays in the transfer portal. You can lose talent there. It's just kind of the nature of the beast. But to be able to recruit those guys that think this staff has shown, one, that they can recruit in general. I know that was a huge question mark. But the position they've arguably recruited the best, I think maybe defensive back could make a run at this. But quarterback, you can't really say much about what Kalen DeBoer and this staff have done. Because getting Elijah Haven, the number one quarterback in the class, to commit big, I think it's going to help them go into the summer with all these official visits. And so we'll see if they can get this ball rolling in terms of building another elite class, building it and starting it with a five-star quarterback. I always enjoy your questions after 8-8. Four or five questions on defense. Four or five questions on offense. NCP, besides certainly the interest in who's going to be the quarterback, and we're not going to know that, probably into midway through summer camp, can Alabama improve at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball? And let's start on the defensive side of the ball. They begin to quietly develop some numbers. Obviously, Devin Tompkins, Terrence Green coming in from USC in Oregon, London Simmons, Jeremiah Beeman, Hill, Faga, Benley Jones, who had two or three plays that stood out. Steve Em, or Steve Bolo, as I call him. And you've got two or three other guys. Ken and Nolan Wilson, Jamarian Matthews, or Maury Johnson helped them this year. Again, the proof's in the pudding. But, CP, is this team, has it developed more depth on the defensive front, and are they better? I think since they wanted to get bigger, they did. Terrence Green is just a massive human being. Devin Tompkins comes in. I think he's 6'5", and two pounds shy of 300 pounds. He's a guy that can play the bandit. He can play inside the three-tech. This defensive line can be really, really good. You're going to lose guys like Keenan and L.T. Overton. You're going to miss them. But I think that they've kind of supplemented it well with the transfer portal and bringing in a ton of freshmen. This is a position group that you could tell the staff emphasized during the offseason. But I'll be interested to see, because they want to be more dominant up front, create more havoc, just how they utilize it. Because I think we could see two outside backers on the field a lot at the same time. I think Yonse Pierre showed that he's certainly capable of being a disruptive force. Justin Hill had a strong freshman season, but I think they're expecting him to take the next step. He looked really good on A-Day. They bring in Desmond Umazulu from South Carolina. That's a trio of outside backers that you want to get on the field quite a bit. And you add into the fact you have Devin Tompkins, where you can move him around. You have Green and Simmons and a ton of guys that you can play up front. I think it's versatile. It's multiple. And this is a group that I think has a chance to be really special. They're going to have to prove it. And again, that was one thing that Cain Womack, when we heard from in the spring, kept talking about wanting to be more dominant up front. And I think they made some moves to try to do that. We'll see if they pan out. But they've got depth. Like Stephen Bumaw had a big payday. I think he's a guy that kind of stocked up heading out of the spring practice. So I'll be fascinated to see how that group pans out because I think they put a lot into it. And we'll see if they get a lot out of it as well. Charlie Potter, hooking up with us. BamOnline.com, part of the On3.com family. Charlie, a lot of folks after last season didn't waste any time asking questions. Coming out of spring camp, where are you, Charlie, as far as the offensive line overall, being able to not win ballgames. They're going to win ballgames, talking about being in contention for a championship and the running back room. To me, that's a hard question because not everybody's healthy. But in the spring game, I think a lot of folks came away with some questions. Where do you start answering those questions, Charlie, at those two positions? Yeah, I think the running back room is still kind of TBD. I honestly think both are because, like you said, they weren't healthy. I think William Sanders is a guy on the offensive line who is probably, he's who I would pense when you're starting left guard. He was out all spring after recovering from his off-season surgery. They have some other pieces that they can move around there. I think Nick Brooks is maybe someone that could play at left guard, the transfer from Texas, who's a mammoth human being. But he's played more on the right side in the spring. So that's, I think, is still a work in progress. I was shocked to hear basically how many starting jobs were all but one in the spring. And we know that Jackson Lloyd has basically locked up that left tackle spot. It sounds like Rayson Delgati, the transfer from Cal Poly, is the starting center. And then the right side, I'm fascinated to see what happens with Michael Carroll because he's either going to be your starting right tackle or your starting right guard. And so he's a right guard like he was for most of the spring. Javon James, the transfer from Mississippi State, is your starting right tackle. So that's just one of those things where you're still trying to figure out where guys are going to be. They definitely brought in a lot of new pieces. And that's the thing about the offensive line is it takes time to gel. So it's still very much so a question mark and not necessarily one in a negative aspect. It's just the uncertainty because there were guys that were out with injuries. You're adding new pieces. H***, you have a new offensive line coach in Adrian Clem coming in. It's going to take some time for that group to come together. And then the running back spot, you lose Jim Miller. You lose a guy like Richard Young to the transfer portal. It's a situation where they're going to need guys like Daniel Hill and Kevin Riley and A.K. Deer to take that next step. And if they don't, you have these true freshmen in E.J. Kroll and Treshawn Brown who are kind of chomping at the bit for reps. And it sucks for E.J. because he's a five-star kid, came in early, reclassified. And I think that they are expecting big things from him. But he didn't take very many reps at all this spring because of an injury. And so with that, it allowed Treshawn Brown to take more reps. He really flashed. If those guys that were on this team last year that didn't really get it done continue to not get it done, those true freshmen I think are going to be guys that get those opportunities and maybe help out this run game this fall. Charlie, I know it's almost impossible to answer this question, but everyone's asking it. What are you hearing about E.J. Kroll's injury? Is it one of those deals where they just want to take precautions in the spring? There's no point in pushing it here. We know what the kid's potentially able to do. What are you hearing as far as his timetable? Yeah, I think it was more of a precaution than anything. We did see him in a walking boot and running around on a scooter during A-Day. But I think he's a guy that's going to be ready to go for summer workouts. I think next month is big for him. I think June he's probably ready to go. I'd hate to put a percentage on it, but I'd imagine he's close to 100% in June. And so that's going to be big for him. He got the mental reps, and he got a little bit of reps early. But then, you know, I think they're going to need E.J. Kroll to be E.J. Kroll this fall. And the big thing is, can he help out in pass protection? How is he in that regard? Spring would have been big for that, just getting used to it. Because he's a guy like you're turning around and handing the ball off to him in high school. I don't really care what kind of offensive system you have. When you have a player like that, you're not asking him to do a whole lot, but take the ball and do your thing. So there's going to be some adjustment for him, and I think he's capable of it. But you've got to be able to pass protect. You've got to be able to help out as a blocker. And so that's going to be interesting to see how it pans out, because I think he has all the capability to be a stellar SEC back. But I think that I don't expect this to really linger, and I expect when we get out there in early August or late July, wherever preseason camp starts, I expect to see 13 on the field and doing things. And barring a setback, I think that's the expectation of those coaching staff as well. Well, one expectation we have is BOL is going to have tremendous articles every day by Andrew Bone, Blake Beiler, Tim Watts, and Charlie Potter. Blake, I know, is going to be covering basketball, some important decisions coming in, the transfer portal for NATO. CP, where can we get online and get all of the great stuff? Yeah, I'm just over at bamonline.com. It's starting to slow down a little bit, but I know Blake and I will be out at the region's tradition pro-am tomorrow morning to hear from Oates and DeBoer and Saban. So we'll have a ton on the site this week. And then May starting up, I know recruiting is going to be picking up, but I'll start a lot of off-season series stuff to kind of pass the time. But recruiting is going to pick up here with official visits, so you'll want to stay tuned to bamonline.com. I know right now you can probably sign up for a dollar. So great time to do that to get all the good stuff. A dollar, is that for a year for a dollar? What's the terms on that, Charlie? I don't know. I think it might be a week, it might be a month. You'll just have to go find out, I guess. Go online and say, right? Charlie, it's always good to hook up with you. Thank you so much for your time today and have a great week. Okay, buddy? All right, guys, thanks for having me. Thank you, bud. Charlie Potter, hooking up with us, bamonline.com. That's part of the on3.com family. Coming up, watch shaking in North Alabama. Hello again, everybody. I'm Roger Hoover. On Tuesday's edition of Crimson Drive, driven by NASCAR, we'll be joined by Alabama baseball outfielder Peyton Steele. Will Plattner, I mean, he's not on the field every day, but I mean, in the dugout, he just keeps the energy up. And some of the freshmen have also stepped up energy-wise. And energy is such a big part of the game. I mean, it just stacks and stacks, like one hit after another, and it just plays. I mean, you know, if there's a dead dugout, it doesn't matter how many home runs you're going to hit. I mean, the other team's always got the advantage. I mean, energy is such a big thing in baseball. The classes aren't very easy, but, you know, I get through it. I get through it. Anything you might like to do after your baseball career is done? Oh, yeah. I mean, obviously, I want to become an engineer, but I think maybe mixing engineering and baseball together, like designing bats or gloves or something like that would be pretty cool. And besides that, maybe playing slow pitch softball. I've always kind of wanted that. That'd be pretty cool. I think you'd do pretty well there. I'll have more in a moment. Now, back with Boomo Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Welcome back here. Time to open the door and say hello to Caleb Suggs. He's got it all covered there at the Decatur Daily. Caleb, welcome in. How are you? I'm doing good, guys. How are you all? You're doing all right. Appreciate you asking. It's safe to say it's a good time to be alive. You love good high school baseball playoff acts. You've got plenty on your plate there, do you not, Caleb? Yeah, we got, you know, we had about eight or nine teams that made it, and we had about five that went on to the second round. We've been blessed with some really good teams this year, and, you know, we got some teams, I think, that, you know, every week you're going to have some that will drop off. But, you know, I think we got some teams that have a chance to make it for deep runs, so it's set up for some pretty good baseball. So let's start with, at the top of your list and kind of work our way down, your thoughts, where do you start in breaking down some of the folks still in the running? Well, I mean, you've got to look at, I mean, you've got Hartzell and Coleman this week. I mean, that's obviously the game of probably the state, in my opinion. I mean, you're two of the best baseball programs in the entire state, and, you know, just such a fierce rivalry, and you kind of look at it, you know, they haven't been in the same area for a while. They used to play in the playoffs like every year, but they haven't actually played in the playoffs since 2018. So, you know, this is kind of, you know, kind of revitalizing this rivalry a little bit, and you're talking about two top five teams. You know, they're at the top of their game. Coleman's been down a little bit lately, but they're finally back to where you can expect them to be, and then, of course, Hartzell's trying to get to the state finals in the last six years. So, you know, this is going to be one of those games where you better get there an hour early because there's going to be a ton of people there, and it's going to be some great baseball, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it go three games, and I'm really looking forward to it. I bet I could count on two fingers the number of teams in the state that could say they've been to the state finals five in the last six years. They swept Buckhorn in the first round two to nothing and 14 to eight. Brad Phillips is a great coach, and every time we talk about Hartzell, I feel that they've got so many multi-sport athletes. It's Cole Miles, Jake Miles' son, the athletic director Connor Stiles, Ashton Doppel, and you just go on and on and on. Again, listen, I'm like you. Coleman is good. They take baseball seriously, but it would not surprise me one bit if it's the six out of seven by the time we get to the end of the playoffs. Yeah, actually, they're going from fifth up five out of six, so they've been four in the last five. They're going from five out of six, but yeah, I mean, you just look at it. I mean, you know, they've been dominant, and of course, Hartzell has a history of being dominant, but I mean, I think this stretch that they have right now rivals, you know, what they were doing in the 90s, and they're just pumping out really good players. I think this year, pitching maybe not quite as deep as it was last year, but they still got some pretty good arms, but I think the big thing is you just look at the lineup. I mean, it's just insane going through all the whole way. I mean, they've got guys that can, you know, hit it off the wall, hit it out of the park. I mean, literally off of the lineup, every single one of them. You know, I haven't looked at the numbers, but I would wager they're averaging seven, eight runs a game, which is just crazy. So, I mean, you know, when you have a lineup like that, you know, you don't have to have necessarily the pitchers that can pitch a 1-0 game every single time. You know, you can work around that. So, you know, they're the team to beat. I know Coleman is actually ranked higher, but, I mean, Hartzell, they've won, you know, kind of a little bit like they did last year. They, you know, played a tough schedule and then ended up winning, you know, 20 or something on the road in the season, and they've done something similar here. They're on a 10 or 15-game winning streak. I mean, they're peaking at the right time. I mean, if Coleman wants to get, you know, get back to the state finals, you know, like they used to be for, you know, five or six years in a row, they're going to have to earn it on the road at Hartzell. Caleb Suggs, looking up with us to you at Decatur Daily. What is it across the bridge over in Limestone County that's in the baseball water? Athens High, they've had their moments, but every year Athens Bible seems to be there, and you mentioned Hartzell with a long, proud tradition. Lindsay Lane is a baby by comparison, but, man, are they making some noise. Yeah, no, I agree, and I think you look at it, Limestone County as a whole, have some teams that are, you know, in sports that are good here and there, but overall, football, basketball, you know, they've been struggling a little bit lately, so it's fun to see, you know, them as a county as a whole just have this success in baseball. And it's not like they just, you know, were in an easy area and got in the playoffs. I mean, they have some really good teams. You mentioned it. Lindsay Lane is extremely good. They're the number one team in 2A for a reason. You know, already won over 30 games. A really, really good team. They have a chance to go to the state finals. East Limestone is having a great year. Their coach, I think, is going to be a contender for Coach of the Year. What he's doing with that program, they're really good. Elkmont, they've kind of been one of the underrated teams the last few years, been a pretty solid playoff team every year, made a few deep runs to the quarterfinals. I mean, they're riding there again. And then Athens Bible, like you said, I mean, they're always there. Luke Merle for them is an outstanding player, and they've got some other talented guys. So, you know, it's cool for that community, that county, just to see, you know, multiple teams have success. And, you know, I wouldn't be surprised to see two or maybe even three of those teams go on past the first round. I mean, past the second round. So, I wouldn't be surprised if we had several teams again in the round next week. I agree with you. Lindsay Lane, a very impressive 30-6 on the season. They're hosting Cold Springs. They swept Pisgah 5-1 and 16-1. Wyatt Wallace, complete game, struck out 10. Grayson Miller, Hampton Wallace. When Robbie Parker went to Lindsay Lane as their principal, Robbie is the former, he's done so many things, but he's the former baseball coach at Bob Jones. And I knew they were going to have quite a baseball program once they got there. And let me mention East Limestone, 23-8. They're hosting Lincoln. Lincoln's had a good year, too. I think that's Thursday, 4-30 to 6-30. And we've talked with you about how the underrated, how Athens is. Well, we just got through talking with you about what East Limestone did in boys' basketball. Charles Eslick is one of their dominant pitchers. You mentioned it again. I believe there are four Limestone County teams. And East Limestone is, again, another one of the most underrated athletic programs in North Alabama. Yeah, you know, and I think it goes back to, you know, something you mentioned with Hartzell, having multi-sport athletes. A lot of those guys that are really good in basketball are helping the team in baseball. It's like, you know, Brody Coker. I mean, they're just, they were, the guys that were there for that deep run in basketball are there for baseball. And I think that's something that I wish, you know, I hate these days. Sometimes we get people pushing kids towards specializing in sports. You know, you have to play baseball year-round or volleyball year-round or basketball year-round. I don't like that. I think, I'm not saying you have to play every sport, but I think kids benefit more when they're playing multiple sports and not, you know, having to play the same sport year-round, one, because I think it helps, you know, skills, but also because you're just not, you know, sucking the fun out of one sport playing it all the time. And so I always, I always love seeing teams that have these multi-sport athletes and I hope for them to have success because I think that's the way it should be. And so I'm hoping that they, I'm glad that they've had success and I hope they continue it. Absolutely. Just in closing, Wes Morgan searching for a new boys basketball coach. Bobby Myers did a really good job. Wes Morgan, we talked with you about them advancing to the Elite Eight. That's a plumb job. I'm going to be curious to see who gets that job. Yeah, pretty good Just trying to catch my breath With all that's going on here Hopefully you survived the NFL draft okay It's always a fine question, Bruce Before we get into some of the obvious questions In your opinion And in Vegas' opinion Who are the big winners And who are the big losers As far as teams go? Well, I'll tell you I think the biggest winner in this draft And we'll check back Hope we're doing this show in a couple years Will be Carolina Because of somebody It took Not even in the draft They went and signed Immediately signed Haynes King Right after the draft He went through unscathed And apparently they were kind of looking at him And thinking nobody would take a chance on him And I think this is And the fact that King and Paviat were not drafted Just shows That this Insane groupthink That the NFL has And they make mistakes So often You cannot tell me That Nathan Kully Minakis The quarterback from Rutgers in Minnesota With his modest college career The commanders drafted him In the seventh round When Pavia and Haynes King Were still on the board That's insane There's no way this guy is that good And for whatever reason They ended up not liking King Apparently Carolina Signed him immediately They signed him to a contract That was sort of like a mid-round pick And they're kind of grooming him They think he can be the backup To Bryce Young And we don't know that Bryce is Maybe they have Dalton for another year But they almost think King is going to be their quarterback I swear This could end up being The best move of the draft Now For teams that actually pick Pick players I think The I can't hate to give Jerry Jones credit Like this Maybe he finally got one right Here Caleb Jones I mean I thought he Slid a little further Than he should have I mean He was better than The 11th best player In the draft I thought And that's when Dallas got him So he was there I also like What the Jets did And I also like We talked about Cape Klubnik last week I thought he's got Some Brock Purdy in him They took him In the mid-round I could And with that quarterback Situation there At the Jets He's going to have a chance Now The whole Jets situation Is up in flux But I think that was A very good pick And on the other side I You know Ty Simpson We will see But You know A lot of people think In the Rams You know They're right on the This is the Super Bowl Window right here Maybe you should have Got somebody in the First round Who could help you Immediately Because you've still Got Stafford in the fold And maybe this isn't The time to make A long-range pick And in any event If Simpson They're not going to Play this year He's going to be Watching Stafford Or I mean If he plays Then Stafford Will have gotten hurt And that's not Good either So it That's got a lot Of people puzzled Why the Rams Didn't Look for some Immediate help Another receiver Maybe another blocker Who could step right in They picked a guy Who's not going to Help them in 2026 And that puzzles Some people Bruce you brought up The name It's been To me They had what Over 250 kids Drafted But the one In addition to King who wasn't Drafted Is sitting on the Headlines And social media The kid that Played in Nashville Last couple seasons Diego Pavia Is it safe to say That basically His talent Got him in the Conversation His character Cost him some money Could be Could be I mean I mean I wish he pulled Back that Post on Twitter Or X After You know Mendoza won That was not A good look However Listen If that's His biggest Transgression You know Everybody He seemed to be Pretty popular Guy At Vanderbilt He wasn't New Mexico State Baltimore's Taking a chance They're going To bring him In And I Think he will Be an interesting Guy to watch In preseason I don't expect Him to usurp Lamar Jackson Anytime soon But Jackson's had a Hard time Staying healthy I'm not sure What their status Is with Tyler Huntley Again Here's a guy Who was About as Productive As a college Quarterback Could be And He's getting Bypassed For For You know Colin Monacus Taylor Green Yeah I know He's got a lot Of Measurables That are good But What was Arkansas's Record last year What was Vanderbilt's Record last year Yeah I think You're I think You're probably Right but Baltimore's Taking a chance And it might Be rewarding For them Ohio State Leading the Pack With 11 Alabama And Texas A&M Right behind Them Once again Alabama Continues Its amazing Streak Of First round Clemson Surprised me With nine Believe me Clemson Fans Are saying That We had Nine Draft Picks And we Had the Season We did Indiana Of course Up to Eight LSU At Seven They're Saying Kind of The same Thing As far As college Teams In the Order Any Surprises For you In Retrospect You know And we Were scoping A draft Before Brett And you Saw These Clemson Guys At the end Of the Year They're Like that But they I mean It's Just Insanely Loaded With them You know Bam Up there As usual With all Their guys LSU Is the other One too And that's One of the Reasons Everybody Everybody Down there Is excited To get To get Lane And they're Like look If we got All these Players We couldn't Do it With Brian Kelly Maybe we'll Do it With Lane So We'll see You know We'll see What goes There By the way Jerry Bernard Going To the Steelers In the Second round Might turn Out to be A good Pick For Pittsburgh Now The Steelers Have to Find a Quarterback If they Can find A Quarterback To get In the Ball I think He's Going to Have a Chance To play Soon But We'll See If Rodgers Or Someone Else Is Going to Be Thrown On The Ball Bruce Marshall Amongst Other Places The Gold Sheet The Gold Standard Out In The Desert Bruce Is It Safe To Say Amongst The Lessons We Learned From The Draft Is That The Big Ten Is Top Heavy They Led The Way With First Rounders The SEC Has More Depth They Have More Kids Drafted Overall Is That A Safe observation Yes I Think So And I Think It's An Observation We Can Make About The Big Tens Are Winning These National Championships Lately And They Got Three Different Schools Won In The Last Three Years So I Mean That's A Pretty Good Run But I Have Maintained Top To Bottom The SEC Is A Better League Because Once You Get Past The Mid Level Of The Big Ten At Least Last Year That League Really Dropped Off The Bottom Was Not That Good And In The SEC You Know Kentucky Had A Rough Year Last Year Even Mississippi State Got To A Bowl Game Last Year And Florida Should Bounce Back So Top To Bottom Yeah Depth I Still Think The SEC Got The Edge But Right At The Top I Mean Those Marquee Programs Little Edge Made Big Ten And That Was Reflected In The Draft As Well Absolutely Let Let Ask You About One Of The Headlines In Sports This Week Is Texas Tech Quarterback Brendan Sorsby Who Has Entered A Rehab For Gambling He Made Thousands Of Tiny Wagers As They Call It Over A Four Year Period Including Once Or Twice Betting On His Own Team A Lot Of Speculation That He May Be Ruled Ineligible By The NCAA Bruce Obviously You Spent Your Life In This And It's Changed So Much Now With The Smartphones You Can Make A Bet Anywhere On Anything Should The NCAA Declare Him Ineligible Bruce What Do You Think About This Situation Yeah My First Thought I Heard That Is What Is Cody Campbell Thinking All This Money They Had To Throw Out On So Exactly That Put That In Jeopardy You Know It Is It Is Really Scary Because My Gut Feel Is I Have Nothing To Basis Upon Other Than A Gut Feeling That Sorgery Is Not The Only Guy Doing This Too Bloody Easy For Somebody To Make These Bets When You've Got The Mobile Apps The Way They Are And It It's Just Too Easy To Do It I Can't Fathom Somebody Making That Many Bets And Losing But Again I You know Show You I Couldn't Believe That He Made All Those Bats And Lost All That Money A few Years ago Look What He Did But It Is Scary And I And I Almost Think You Know We'll See Where You Know All This Evidence Goes So I Don't Want To Jump To A Conclusion Too Quick But If It Goes Where It Looks Like It's Going The NCAA Is Going to Suspend Him And I Don't Know Where This Stops Because As Long As They've Got You The Mobile Apps And It's So Easy To Bet And Some Of These The Proposition Bets I Don't Know What The Answer Is To That And I Can't And There's So Many Of These It's Not Really Even Betting Some Of These Bets And The Props Where People End Up Doing All These Little Bets It's Just Like Coin Flipping And For Some People It's Dangerous And I Just Don't I Don't Know What The Answer Is Except I Mean How What Sort Of Legislation You Can If You Even Can Each State Has Different Rules I Don't Know It's It's A Can Of Orange But I Do Think I Expect He Probably Will Be Suspended And It Should Be A Warning To Everybody Else But I Also Think He's Probably Not The Only Guy Doing I Think There's A lot Of Lawyers On Speed Dial Right Now For That One Bruce Marshall Checking In From Vegas Bruce I I'm Looking At The Counter Here It's The First Weekend In May Which Time Means It's Time To Horse Around They Tell Me That Louisville Has A lot Of Betting Going On This Weekend For The Folks Who Want Take The Big Hoss In This Race This Weekend Where Do You Start Breaking Down The Kentucky Derby I Actually Went To A Kentucky Derby Once I Got It Off My Bucket List In 1994 Go For Gen One And It Was And It Was Rainy At The Churchill Downs That Day So I Have I Have Been There Once But You Know We Will See If This If This Renegade Is Is The Horse They Think He Is You Know Maybe He He's The One But Apparently They're Sticking Him With The Inside Post And If The Weather Comes Up Bad That's Not A Place You You Want To Be It's Virtual Downs On The Rail So I Don't Know These 20 Horse Fields I Don't Know How To Hand Most The Horse Races I Saw Growing Up Were Seven And Eight Horse Fields And I Can Remember A Kentucky Derby With Eight Horses In It In 1979 So I Don't These 20 It's Not Really A Horse Race It's Just You Know It's It's Too Over The Top And It's A Very Hard Race To Bet That's Why I Really Don't Ever Get In Kentucky Derby Anymore Because I Don't How You Handicap 20 Horses In The Field It's Just Too Odd I Win In 2014 And It Is Everything They Say It Is As As For The Costumes Dressing Up The Excitement It Was I Should Go At Least One Time Major League Baseball The Braves Are Doing exceptionally Well A Couple Of Managers Are Not Alex Cora With The Red Sox Rob Thompson Fired This Morning With The Phillies The Mets Manager Is On A Banana Peel Your Thoughts On Major League Baseball So Far Yeah I Was Not Surprised That I'm A Little Surprised The Mets Haven't Pulled The Plug That Would Seem Like Okay That's The Perfect Time To Do It And Maybe They're Still Talking Maybe Alex Cora Is Now Available Although We're Hearing Now He Probably Doesn't Want To Manage Anywhere This Year So I Got To Feel That Shoes Got To Drop Here With The Mets Really Quickly Thompson You Know Look At The Phil's Run Differential They Just Had Not Been Doing It This Year Worse In The League And I Sort Of Understand That Interestingly It's Don Mattingly's Son Is The GM And He Hired His Dad As The In Room Manager So That's Kind of An odd Dynamic But I think The Phil's Realized Remembered Four Years Ago They Moved Joe Girardi Out They Weren't Going As Bad Four Years Go Now But They Moved Him Out In Late May And Brought Thompson And Ended Up Going To World Series So Maybe They're Thinking Lighting Strikes Twice Again But I The Red Sox Are Going To Rally Though I Don't Like What They Did To Cor And How They Did It Maybe They'll Start To Rally Too But The Tampa Bays Is Watching The AL Right Now The Gold Standard Is Bruce Marshall Before And Now Once Again The NBA They Got Playoffs Going On Coming Down The Hawks Have Played Pretty Well We'll See How They End Up The Kentucky Derby But The Hockey Still Going On With The Playoffs No Matter What The Sport You Got It Covered Bruce Where Can We Get Online To Get All Your 47 Platforms Thanks Brett Yeah This Hockey Stuff Is Really Good They Really Pick It Up A Gear In The Playoffs For The Stanley Cups So That's Good Watch So That Pick Been Going Well There The NBA And Major League Baseball It's Been A Good Couple Weeks For Me So My Picks Are Up There Now Everything Is Under The Wagertalk.com Umbrella Wolfsheet.com Is There We'll Start Filling Up That Space More Toward Football Season But Also Picks And Parlays Winners And Winners Dot Tom Lemming Is Busy There As The Co-host Of The Lemming Report On CBS Sports Network His Magazine Is Called Prep Football Report Tom Welcome In Welcome Back How Are You Oh I'm Doing Great I'm I am Back In Chicago Finally Too Been A Long Drive I Took A 10,200 Mile Drive I got Back A few Days Ago And It Was Great Because I Was Able To See A Lot Of History Mike Leach Had Told Me About Those Marvel Lights Down In The Bottom Part Of Texas And I Went And Saw Them A Couple Weeks Ago And It Supposed To Be UFO Lights Or Nobody Can But Years Ago Leach Had Told Me You Got To Go Down There So I Finally Made It Down There And They Filmed The Movie Giant With Elizabeth Taylor Rock Hudson And James Dean Right In That 800 Person Town So It Was A Unique Experience So Saw A lot Of History And A lot Of Football Players Along The Way Tell Me You Need To Write A Book Forget Recruiting I Mean Life Is All About Stacking Experiences And Getting Out Living It As Opposed To Existing And You By Virtue Of Traveling All These Places Met A lot Of People But Also A lot Of Places Obviously It Never Ends It's Always A new Chapter Tom It's A new Era But You Know Where We Are So Let's Just Ask You What's Your Take On One Elijah Haven The Five Star From Baton Rouge On His Way To Tuscalo I Went Coach And What A great Kid To The Thing That Hits You With Quarterbacks Sometimes They Seem To Be More Intelligent Than Everybody Else Football Player Wise Elijah Was Like That He Seemed Very Mature Like 18 Going On 30 At That Time 16 Going On 30 But He Was Tall And The Coach Put On Some Film And The Guy Could He Was Very Athletic For Skinny Kid At The Time So Let Me Ask You The Obvious Question To That If You Will Relative To Alabama How Many Schools Have Three Five Stars And Then Other Four Stars Mere Four Stars Your Thoughts Where Do You Start Breaking Down The Respected Talents And The Pluses And The Minuses Of The Mala And You Got Russell Now You Got Havens Coming In That Not Even Mentioned Trent Seaborn Is Player Of The Year In Alabama He Has A Trophy Case Full Of State Championships There At Thompson So How Do You Analyze Alabama's Quarterback Room Yeah I Stopped By To See Sober The Coach Brought Out Like Nine Players He Thought Were All Americans From Thompson And You Know It's The Number One Program In Alabama Really When It Comes To Talent And Everything So They Better Win This Year With All Those Great Five Star Quarterbacks Right In The National Title Hunt I Remember A few Years Ago When I Did Your Show And They Were Ranked 65th In Recruiting In The Summer Alabama Fans Wanted Nick Saban Fired They Wound Up Number One By The End Of The They Wound Up Number One By The End Of The Year And Then All Of Of One We'll Give Another Year They're Very Spoiled At Alabama So Hopefully Guys Like This Elijah Another High School Year So But Hopefully With All The Talent They Have A Quarterback And Alabama Has Got A lot And I Big Coach He Just Came After Nick Saban The Best Coach Probably In The History Of College Football And It's Tough To Follow That Kind Of An Act Let Me Ask You About Two Receivers Who Alabama Fans Would Like For Elijah Haven To Throw To One Of Monsoon Bama Sales Yes That's His Nickname Five Star Wide Receiver From Lawrence North In Indianapolis And Xavier Salb Yeah One Of The Three Salb Brothers Keon Is Currently On The Team The Middle Brother Amari Is Committed Alabama And Five Star Receiver From Glassboro High School In New Jersey Xavier Salb What A Family Tom Tell us A little More About Sales In Indianapolis And Xavier Salb In New Jersey Well Monsoon Looks Like An NFL All Pro Already He's Got Great Build On Stats Wise He's Not There Yet He Is Five Star Definitely On Potential But I Think His Production Could Be Better And He Is Such A Good Athlete But He's The Guy Could Just Explode You Know I Think Sales Had That Kind Of Potential But He's Not There Yet When Watching Him He Could Really Develop Into A Great One Xavier Could Be An All American His Dad Brought Him And His Older Brother To Meet Me A couple Years At Penn State I'm Actually Going To Glassboro At The End Of May So I'll Be Seeing Him Again But He Can Be An All American Safety And Wide Receiver He Can't Just Pigeon Hold Him To One Spot He Is The Premier Player In New Jersey And A Great Ball Player Both Of Them Are Five Stars And Both Of Them Could Be Great Players Although Again I Started The Five Star System Back In 92 And It's Pretty Bogus Mine And Everyone Else A lot Of The Other One Based On How Many Offers You Have And Everything Else Sab Is A Great Athlete And Has Great Stats I Think Munchen Munchen Should Have Better Stats Than What He Has But I Think Talking To His Coach And Everything He Thinks That This Is Going To His To Really Shine As A Senior And That Right There Time Is The Difference You Talk To People Who Know The Finish Up The 18th Hole A Lot Of Folks And I Think You Got To 17 And Stay Perpetually On 18 According To The Jokes Down There But A Lot Of Questions Coming In About Alex Scullers Has He Going To Do Well His Let Pick Up A Four Star Running Back Myson Johnson We Been Joking About This Too Tom You Got To Have A Hyphen In Your Name It's Myson Johnson Hyphen Cook How Good Is He From Illinois So He's Got To Be Good He's A Great Running Back He Was In DeSoto Texas When I First Saw Him And The Coach There Is A Good Friend Of Mine And He Brought Up Myson As A Freshman And Then The Last Two Years He's Been In Illinois But He Is I Think A Five Star Back Who Could Become An Immediate Impact Ball Player Kind Of Reminds You Of The Kid At Notre Dame Jeremiah Love He's Got That Kind Of Great Instinct Maybe Not Quite As Fast Jeremiah Was Like A 10 700 Meter Kid But He's Got All The Other Tools When He Was In DeSoto He Had Earned All City Mention As A Freshman And That's One Of Great Areas Of The Metroplex Down In Dallas Fort Worth So He's A Great Back Auburn Has Got Themselves Now The Key Is To Hang On To Now At NIL You Never Know Which Guy Is Going To Sign With You Come December But He's A Big Time Ball Player And Their Coaching I Knew Their Head Coach As A Recruiting Coordinator Here And He Was Always involved Recruiting Was Very Big To Him And You're Right When You Freeze Talked About Golf Remember I Think I Told You Years Ago Rick Neweisel Was My Co-host At CBS He's Still There And I Was Teasing Him I Said In A Commercial Break Show Me A Coach That's A Polific Golfer And I'll Show You A Lousy Recruiter Our Next guest On The Was Steve Spurrier The And He Goes Those Guys Brian Kelly That Was Brian Kelly Was Always A Good Coach But He Loved Golf And Recruiting Wasn't As Important To Him As It Should Have Been And I Think That's One Of The Big Reasons Why He Got Fired Recruiting Now Like Nick Saban And Ervin Meyer And Pete Carroll Recruiting Has To Be Your Hobby Not Golf And If It Is You're Going To Do Okay If You Know How To Coach What Was They Said About Spurrier He Basically A Kid Showed Up For A Saturday Visit And He Missed It Because He Forgot About The Kid Coming On Campus But While We're Talking About Auburn Your Thoughts I Know He's Already There But You Still Have Memories How Successful Is Brown Going At Auburn Pulling The Trigger For Auburn In This System I Think You'll Be Great I Think Auburn Fans Should Be Real Excited Now Because They Got The Recruiting Staff In Place That They Need Auburn Always Had The Money It's Just A Matter Of You Need Coaches That Go Out It Always To Me Have Been Perseverance And Personality That Was Always What Happened Now You Got Going To Take Another Year To Get Them Back Into The Elite Group Of 15 And I Think That This Staff Is The Staff That Can Do That Just Because You Got The School Already With A Lot Of History You Just Need Guys That Knew What They Were Doing And Recruiting And Coaching I Was Amaged Following The Draft And There Would Be A Player Selected And About 15 Minutes Later You Would Have And Then They'll Send You The Rest Of The Bill Later On But Joe Let's Talk Speaking Of The Time Of The Year And That's Got To Be One Of Those Moments When You See Your Kid Out There Driving Especially Your Daughter's Like Oh My Gosh Where's Time Going Pretty Much The Same With ACC Baseball Season The Regular Season In The Light The End Of Tunnel Is Here And So Far Georgia Is Still The Lead Big Dog In The SEC Your Thoughts About Georgia And Is Kirby Smart Now Coaching Georgia Baseball Too Well You know The way They Put up Points I don't Know We Probably Better Pick An Offensive Guru And Not A Defensive Guru To Tie In With Baseball For The Dogs 120 Home Runs On The Season It's Just Insane You know It's Been Struggle To Differentiate Who Really Goes At The Top Of The League But I Think The Best Thing You Got To Say For Georgia Is They've Been There The Whole Time You know There Are Some Things To Wonder About The Hitting Can Kind Come Ago At Times The Pitching Will Be The Big Issue But You Know When You Hit The Ball Out Of The Ballpark You Tend To Go Home Happy At The End Of The Day And They've Been Happy A lot Joe One Of The Triple Crown Candidates For SEC Baseball Is A Transfer From Wofford Daniel Jackson Batting 380 21 Home Run 62 RBIs I'll Ask You About What You Think Is The Picture Of The Year But He's Pretty Good Candidate Right Now For The MVP Of The Season Yeah I Mean You Feel Like Those Georgia Guys All Stand Out And Trey Phelps Has Had A Good Year For Them Too But Jackson Really Yeah I'm It's Hard To Turn Down A Guy Who As You Know He's Up There In RBI He's Up There In Homers And He's Right There It Might Be The Auburn Fella Eric Guevara Knocked him Out Of The Triple Crown Because He's Right There South You Mentioned Auburn And To Me They Personify Baseball It's A Marathon You're Going To Have Your Ups You're Going To Down Doesn't Matter If It's College MLB Whatever Your Thoughts About Auburn They've Had Their Downs But Right Now Last Numbers I've Got In 12 And 9 30 And 13 Overall And In A Pretty Good Position At This Point Yeah They Really Are They're In A Pretty Good Position To You Feel Like They're Just About Certain To Have A Regional Hosting Nod And You Want That Second Advantage You Want To Have The Potential Super Regional Host So They're In Position For That I Mean They've Still Got Some Work To Do But You Really Like Where They're At Right Now Had A Really Nice Weekend With Oklahoma Hit The Ball Really They're Relying On Some Younger Guys And Some New Faces But It's All Coming Together Pretty Well Joe Alabama Lost Two Out of Three To Tennessee They Won The First Game And Then Basically They May Be The Worst Team In The League Defensively They Had Three Errors In One Game And More Errors In Another One 10 11 29 And 16 They Host Vandy This Weekend They're Starting Pitching Is Tyler Faye Adams They've Got Good Starting Pitching And We All Talk About Pitching And Hitting But Joe In Alabama's Case Defense Has Really Let Them Down You're Absolutely Right I mean The Most Errors In The League And It's Not Even Terribly Close And It's Interesting The Other Teams That Are Down There With Them Are The Other Teams That Are Really Struggling Right Now You Don't Want To Be In That Group Basically You Know The Thing About It Is Pitching We All Understand How Rare It Is But Boy If You Feel The Ball Well You Just Make Their Job So Much That's Right And There Is No Substitute For Taking Care Of Those Three Outs If You Make That Pitch Turn Around And Get A Fourth Out Or Fifth Out In In In Of A Guy I Grew Up Watching A lot With The Toronto Blue Jays Dave Steve And He Would Stare Guys Down If They Made An Error Behind Him And If I Was One Of These Pitchers For Alabama I Might Be Staring Some Guys Down Right Now You Know An Error And Walk That's Deadly Even Though Silent Killers But They Are Any Baseball Team Let's Talk About You Mentioned LSU What In The World Too Many Crawfish Too Much Over On In The French Quarter What's Going On With LSU And The Other Right There With South Carolina If You've Been Following SEC Baseball Over The Years LSU And South Carolina They Were Almost Staples You Almost Pencil Man In Preseason They Are Going Contending And Not So Much Now That Basically Sitting There With Missouri Living In The Cellar Yeah South Carolina It's Really Been At The Plate They're Last In The League In Batting Average So I Think That's Where A lot Of Their Issues Come From And They Don't Steal Any Bases They're Last In The Stolen Bases So If You Don't Hit Very Well And You Don't You Runs You're Not Going To Score A lot Of Runs LSU Has Underachieved Some On That Side But It's Really Been The Pitching For Them They're Last In The League In ERA So Again It's One Of Those Things Where The Teams That Don't Beat Themselves Tend To Rise To The Top Of The Pile And LSU Right There Not Only The Bad ERA But They Give Up That's Two Teams That Have Struggled To Put Anything Together This Year Joe Pitcher Of The Year We're Getting Down To The Triple Crown The Pitcher Kate Townsend At Ole Miss 4-1 2.33 ERA Aiden King At Florida 7-2 1.78 Jake Marciano At Auburn 3-3 2.04 Volantis Dylan Volantis I believe At Texas 6-0 2.06 ERA Who's The Pitcher Of The Year At The SEC Yeah I'm Going With The Guy You Said Last I Like Volantis Down There At Texas I Mean You Noted No Losses That 206 ERA Got Him At Third In The League But He Also Has 80 Strikeouts In 56 And Two Thirds Innings So There's Something To be Said For Being A Guy Who Misses Other People's Bats Again As Alabama If You're One Of Those Guys Who's Making All Those Errors You say Well Just Miss The Bat A Little Bit More And We'll Be Fine So Volantis Does A Good Job Of Not Putting Too Much On His Team Behind Him And I Think That's One Guy Who If I Had To Circle Down The Stretch I Think We're Going To See More From Him On The Post Season Level With Texas Joe Is Texas A&M One Of The Most Underrated Teams In The League 33 And Eight 14 Six They Beat Texas A Couple Weeks Ago Two Out of Three That Third Game Got Rained Down But The Aggies Are Playing Well Yeah They Really Are They Have Pulled Together Down The Stretch And Put A Nice Run Together And You Know The Thing That Stands Out To Me You're Talking About A Team That They Had Some Tough Schedule Moments Early But Then They Got A Nice Run They Got To Play Mizzou They Got To Play Vandy Which Most Years Isn't A Good Thing But This Year Is Not Really Anything Particularly Tough They Got LSU And They Swept Them So You Know They They've Done A Nice Job Of Backing Into Some Weaker Opponents At Good Times But At The Same Time They've Obviously Taken Advantage Of Their Breaks And Looking Down The Stretch Their Series Coming Up Here With Auburn Is Probably As Tough As Anything They've Got Ahead So That Will Be A Good Tune Up For Both Of Those Teams I Think You're Exactly Right Great Stuff With Baseball Football Or Basketball From Joe Cox And SDS Joe Where Can We Get Online Now, back with Boomo Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Welcome back here. Time to say hello to Caleb Jones. He is all over recruiting when he comes to the Auburn Tigers. They're at auburnsports.com. Caleb, welcome in. How are you? How's it going, guys? Good, man. We're doing all right. Caleb, we had the pleasure of talking. One of the best in the biz when it comes to recruiting Tom Lemming from CBS earlier. And we asked him about Auburn's latest pickup at the running back spot. And he was just beaming. He says not only is he good, he comes from a neck of the woods where the talent overall is good. And when you can stand out amongst good relative competition, that just adds to it. Caleb, your thoughts about Auburn's latest pickup from the greater St. Louis area at the running back spot. Yeah, Meis and Johnson Cook, that's a massive pickup for Auburn. I mean, Auburn's looking to get a really talented running back this class, and they got one. We have him as, I think, the number four overall running back in the country. I believe when the original ranking of his class came out, he was actually the top running back. So he's dropped down number four here. But it's a big win for Auburn, getting him in the class over Miami. He's a big dude. He's about 6'2", 220. So, I mean, this is a guy that can just, you know, power his way through some folks. And so it's a good pickup for Auburn. You know, they're losing Jeremiah Cobb after this season. So they're going to need some guys to come in and have a chance to step up next year. Kev, talk to us not only about the pickup, but the fact that it's in the greater St. Louis area. Because a lot of Auburn fans were almost to the point of being jaded. When is this program as a whole going to be picking it up? Overall, you did a decent job recruiting. He just couldn't stay off the golf course long enough to develop her, so it seemed anyway. But your thoughts, I mean, this is not exactly, you don't think of Auburn and greater St. Louis area in the same breath, usually. Your thoughts about the connection there? I think one thing that this staff has done is, you know, they're prioritizing a lot of guys that are close by. But they're also prioritizing elite talent is kind of what, you know, Alex Dolish kind of targets, right? So they talked about a lot. So, I mean, especially with, you know, Mike and Justin Cook, he is an elite talent. And so, like, Auburn's not afraid to go and recruit, you know, guys that are maybe outside of that 250-mile range. And I know that Dolish, you know, they want to hammer that range, those guys, that local, close-by talent. But they're also really open to going out and getting the best guys they can. You know, whether that's, you know, Mike and Justin Cook from that East St. Louis area or, you know, they've been going after Will Menzel, who just recently committed to Oregon. But, you know, he's out in Arizona, you know. So, I mean, they're very – they're going to go out and get the guys that they view as guys that can help them. You know, it doesn't matter where they are in the country. The staff is really aggressive in their recruiting, both local guys, guys that are close by, but guys that maybe aren't so close by. And I think throughout the spring, one thing I was really impressed with was just how many guys that they got on campus that, you know, weren't from around the area. You know, guys from, you know, North Carolina, Illinois, Missouri. I mean, you had a lot of guys that made a long trip to go see Auburn practice. And I think a lot of it is just because of the relationship that the staff has built with those guys. Caleb, one thing that helps is when you tell a player and his family you can get them to the NFL, Auburn was able to break that first-round hex. Keldrick Falk goes to the Titans. Keron Crawford in the third round to the Raiders. Connor Liu to the Bengals in the fourth round. And I really wonder if he had not have been injured, if that had been the second or third round. Jeremiah Wright with his versatility to play various positions. Fourth round to the Saints and Bobby Jamison Travis to the Giants. I know they want to improve on five, but I thought it was a solid draw for Auburn. Yeah, I mean, for a team that hasn't had a winning season in probably five seasons, a team that won only five games last year, that's a really solid draft for Auburn. I think it kind of went as expected. I think you kind of had an idea as to who was going to get drafted going into the NFL draft. You kind of had a feeling like Keldrick Falk was going to be a first-rounder. And then as that first round kind of went on, it kind of turned into the, oh, my goodness, is he actually, is he going to flip to the second round? But, you know, the Titans, that was the guy that they really want. You know, they felt like Keldrick fit their defense. And, you know, especially with Robert Sala over there, kind of what he does. And so, you know, they traded up to go get Keldrick in the first round. And then, you know, Keron Crawford in the third round, you can't say enough about, you know, just his work ethic. This is a guy that was at Arkansas State several seasons ago before Auburn, went from Arkansas State to Auburn, sat a little bit behind, you know, Jalen McLeod. And then this past season, you saw, like, when it was his turn, he came in and he played with, he played outstanding every, every snap, every down. And this is something that, you know, you're not going to find a guy that works a lot harder than Keron Crawford. So, very well-deserved. Conor Liu going in the fourth round, a bit surprising. I thought he would go in the third. I thought he would go in on the second day. I think you're kind of right there. I think any time you're coming back from an ACL injury, it does kind of raise a couple of questions. But, I mean, that's a fantastic pickup for the Bengals. You know, I think, I believe Ted Harris is their center right now. So, Conor is going to be able to go in and learn. I think he'll have an opportunity to compete for a starting job. Maybe not this upcoming season, but, you know, potentially next season. Jeremiah Wright, another guy that, you know, just great dude all around. Really good football player, versatile, so he can fit into the Saints. And, you know, he's got a real shot to thank the team and contribute there. And then, you know, Bobby Jamison Travis going fifth round. He's a big guy up front. He can really give you some size up there. You know, of course, the Giants just lost some size up front. This is straight to the Bengals with Dexter Lawrence going over there. But, yeah, fantastic draft for Auburn. Five players drafted. I think that's the most drafted in a class since Auburn had. They had six go in 2020. Thing is, these guys, too, after all they've been through with all the coaching changes over the years, they've got to be tough cookies as well. Caleb Jones hooking up with us, AuburnSports.com. Speaking of later, earlier about recruiting, Caleb, you know how this game is played. Folks say, okay, we've got a four-star, we being Auburn, in this case, fans. Your thoughts, where do they go now? We know that the season's about to get rocking and rolling. May and June, usually rich. Your thoughts about maybe some of the names that may be coming to Auburn. And if not names, in your opinion, what position would you like to see Auburn kind of focus in on especially? Well, they've got a lot of – they've only got three guys in the class right now. They've got – I think they've got the tight end, defensive line, and then obviously a running back now. But – so they're going to have a lot of guys kind of coming in here for the – for official visits here, if I'm pulling up some lists here. Yeah, George Lons, by the way, the tight end, that's a fantastic pickup as well. But you're going – they're going to have all kinds of guys. I mean, you both – you can go anywhere. I don't think you can go wrong with any position here. Just because you've only got three guys in the class, you're really in contention with a lot of guys that are going to be coming in over the next couple of months for official visits, you just – you have a lot of guys coming in. So that's going to be a big thing for Auburn. They're hitting the road, the coaching staff is, to go out, to go recruit these guys, to really, you know, establish those relationships. So I think Auburn's positioned itself well kind of heading into the official visit season. And like I said earlier, I don't think you can go wrong with any position here. Let me ask you about a couple of guys. Carlos May, defensive lineman from Ramsey in Birmingham, monster at 6'2", 3'30". Boy, any team would like to have him on their defensive front. Of course, Auburn's not the only one going after him. And then Marquise Evans from Spain Park, an edge, a 6'5". Kid is good. Nash Johnson, who was an Alabama commitment out of Atlanta, Georgia, a cornerback. And we can mention 20 more. But in particularly, your thoughts on Carlos May, edge, Marquise Evans from Spain Park, and Nash Johnson out of the Atlanta area. Yeah, I mean, Auburn's been after all those guys, you know, pretty hard there. Especially, you know, Carlos May, he's got, he's friends with Donovan Moore, who's a defensive line commit. I mean, he's got an extra recruiting there outside of, you know, Vontrell, King Williams. Auburn's going after him. I mean, and then who's the other guy you mentioned? Nash Johnson. Yeah. They're back out of Atlanta there. Former, former Alabama commit, like you said. Somebody that's been to Auburn, you know, multiple times, really likes what, you know, DVD is doing. But yeah, so. And those guys, those guys are set, they've got their official visits locked in, too. So those are going to be, those are going to be crucial weekends for Auburn to kind of separate themselves. As far as coming out of the spring, I've read a lot of reports about, of course, again, everybody's got questions. But as far as positions, is linebacker the best position on this team? Xavier Rankins, we know what he can do. Elijah Melendez, Bryce Dees, who I've heard several people say. Brian Matthews said he may be the best linebacker of the bunch. Toodle, et cetera. In your opinion, is linebacker maybe Auburn's best position? Yes, I think it is. I mean, you just look at the guys that you have in the room. The two guys that are going to start for Auburn with Xavier Rankins and Elijah Melendez. I mean, those are two really good linebackers. Not even at the SEC level, but, you know, nationally, like, those guys can absolutely play. And then you look at who's behind them. You know, Bryce Dees, whenever, you know, DeMarcus Riddick comes back healthy. You've got, you know, Starius Toodle. And then you've got a couple of transfers that are just, you know, they've been really competitive throughout spring. So, I mean, when you look at it, I don't think it's hard to look at that roster and look at the talent and say, no, the linebacker room is really, you know, one of the top rooms. So, I think the only position that may compete with that is safety. I mean, Auburn's safety is absolutely loaded with experience and really good players. New Boyd Fagan, Eric Winters. I mean, you, Champ Anthony is coming back. So, I mean, Auburn's linebacker room, I think, is the best. I think safety is probably the second runner up there. Speaking of the defensive backfield, some interesting news. Correct us if we're wrong on this, Caleb. We understand that one of Auburn's top transfers from the most recent cycle is no longer with a team. defensive back, Jack Luttrell, who came over from Arizona, originally signed with Tennessee, had a pretty good run at Arizona, but then had a shoulder injury last year, has decided to medically retire from football. Yeah, this is something that, I mean, throughout spring, he was, you know, limited just because of that injury. So, yeah, the medical, just deciding to medically retire. I don't know any other details other than that. So, Caleb, basketball, Stephen Pearl did a really good job, first of all, of getting a lot of the core group to come back. He's added a lot of size. That was one of the things he really wanted to do was to get bigger in the post, and boy, did he ever do that. How many more will he bring in? As far as the number goes, I couldn't give you that. Our basketball transfer expert, that's going to be Justin Hokanson. He's an absolute animal when it comes to knowing all that kind of stuff. But like you said, I will say, one thing Auburn lacked last season was size. It was a big problem for Auburn. And, boy, did Stephen Pearl go in and stack that in the transfer portal. What that shows me is that that's a coach that recognizes, you know, what the team needs, what the program needs. And that's the first priority for Stephen Pearl was going and getting a couple of big guys, and then from there going and finding some sharpshooting guys that can really elevate your offense. Absolutely. Listen, I always enjoy the conversation with you. Recruiting about to really get hot and heavy. A lot of the official visits coming up late May and also June. You will be following Brian Matthews and all your team. Caleb, where can we get online and get all your good stuff? Yeah, we've got a fantastic team over at AuburnSports.com that will have you covered with everything coming up here. I mean, whether it's official visits for football recruiting, basketball transfer portal wrapping up, baseball is having a great season. They're going to be played, you know, probably host a regional. So, Brian Matthews does a fantastic job of covering Auburn baseball, Auburn softball, wrapping up their season, SEC tournament coming up. So, I mean, anything that you need, anything that you want to check out as far as when it comes to Auburn athletics, Auburn sports coverage, you need to check out AuburnSports.com. BB, we would be remiss if we didn't sit here and mourn the passing of truly a radio legend, a colleague of ours down in the Cullman area. I've known Johnny, or knew Johnny Thrasher a long time. He used to be on his own nickel. He would call, especially when the regionals came down to Hanceville there to Wallace State. We knew exactly what was going on. And he truly was, from the heart, a radio legend. Johnny Thrasher, Johnny Thorne, I should say, living in the Cullman area. Yeah, he passed away last weekend, Harold. If you ever visited the regionals in Hanceville, which you and I both have quite often, you ran into Johnny. He would do play-by-play. He was the Wallace State, SID, I believe, for years. But everybody knew him and passed away suddenly over the weekend. I've seen a lot of great testimonies about him, about his friendship. Jeff Spiegel of 3340 in Birmingham did a very nice clip on him and said, Johnny said, I never worked a day in my life. That's right. A lot of people would like to be able to say that. But, Johnny, the Flash Thornton. Yeah. Going to greater heights in heaven. I think he was a Christian, too. Talked about that occasionally. But you're right, Harold. He was an absolute icon in Cullman. Jeff Spiegel, by the way, also with roots to Cullman. Yeah. The Braves are back at it tonight here on 93.9 The Score. They'll start tonight seven and a half games in first place. They host the boys from Motown, the Detroit Tigers, the Braves, later on, right here on 93.9 The Score. It's going to take care of business for now on behalf of B.B., Greg, James Blair, the entire crew here. Harold Buck, thank you so much for your time today. Let's do it again tomorrow, noon to two for the B.M.O. Buck Show, back here on Sports Radio, 93.9 The Score.
