It's time for the Valley's exclusive FM Sports Voice. The Boomo Bugg Show. Your exclusive inside track to the tie, Tigers, Tennessee, and the rest of the SEC. Now, your host, Harold Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Good afternoon and welcome here to the Boomo Bugg Show. I'm Harold Bugg alongside Brett Beaird. Thank you so much for giving us free ride around the Tennessee Valley. Brett Beaird, welcome in where Alabama gets the five, Auburn gets the four, and Diego gets a big no until after the party is over. Good afternoon, welcome in, and how are you? Hopefully we'll have Mr. Brett with us here shortly. In the meantime, obviously a great weekend. Alabama picks up a five-star quarterback. Auburn picks up a four-star running back. And Diego Pavia has to wait until after the NFL draft to get a call from the Baltimore Ravens to go to their minicamp. Oh, my goodness, what a difference it makes from what the Heisman festivities, making history. The only guy since, what, over 10 years ago that did not get a call in the first seven rounds of the NFL draft after going to the Heisman and being one of the finals. We don't want to get all the way to the finalists now. We want to kick things off with Adam Spencer. He's busy there. It's Saturday down south. Adam, welcome in. How are you? I'm doing great. How are you? Yeah, we're doing great. We appreciate you taking time out. Where did we start this weekend's, the NFL draft? And it's amazing, you had, what, over 250 guys drafted, but the guy who's getting all the news is Diego Pavia, the guy that didn't get a phone call. Your reaction to the news about Diego Pavia sitting and waiting by the phone, having a lot of champagne that never went uncorked, although that may be a myth, too, given that his history. But your reaction to the news over the weekend. Yeah, I'm not surprised. I mean, you know, even when you get past, you know, all the, you know, outspokenness and his message to the Heisman voters after they didn't vote for him and stuff, you see some immaturity there. So I'm not surprised that he didn't get drafted, but it's also because he's smaller. You know, he's not well below six feet. So, I mean, he doesn't fit the profile of a typical quarterback. And, like, he's not even, like, you know, like even Kyler Murray, I think, is a couple inches taller than him. So, you know, I think that that, more than anything, had the, is why he didn't get picked. Because, you know, if he was, like, if you just put the season that Diego Pavia had into Garrett Nussmeyer's body, then, like, that's a potential number one overall pick. So, you know, I think it was more size concerns. And, of course, the immaturity part didn't help. So, but, you know, he's got his chance. He signed with the Ravens. You know, we'll see if he can start proving everybody wrong. And I wouldn't count it out because he plays pretty well with a chip on his shoulder. Yeah. And I think a lot of folks would say his talent got him to New York for the Heisman, got him in the conversation, but his character might have cost him in the end. Who knows? We're not in the minds of all those GMs. At the end of the day, bottom line is, if you can make them money, they'll sit here and make an excuse and spin it to where the character is not a factor. History shows that, too. But let's talk overall about the drought. Obviously, the Big Ten dominated the first round. But after all was said and done through seven, when they did the math, the SEC was the most players. So, Adam, is it easy to draw a conclusion here that the Big Ten may be top-heavy, the SEC is deeper? Yeah, I think that that's exactly the case. The SEC teams, top to bottom, are really strong. The Big Ten has four or five, maybe even if you want to go top six, that are really strong. So, it's not surprising that they – I mean, Ohio State is the reason that the Big Ten had so many first-round picks. I mean, so it's one school there, really. I mean, they have the sprinkling of some other schools there. But, yeah, so now Ohio State, they're going to be fine. They'll have their – they'll reload through the portal. I thought that a more interesting trend was that, you know, you see the numbers of group of six draftees plummeting. And, you know, these smaller conferences and independents, Division II, Division III, like all of those numbers are plummeting right now. Like the power four are absolutely dominating the draft. And, you know, I think that that speaks to NIL because why would a guy from the group of six go pro when he can go to, you know, transfer to Ole Miss or Rutgers or just any school, Texas Tech. You know, any school that needs help, if you're a group of six-star, you're going to make more money going to a power conference school for your final couple of years rather than entering the draft. So, I think that we'll see that trend continue where, you know, the smaller schools and the lower divisions just have fewer and fewer draft takes every year. Adam, what surprised you with the draft? Alabama 10, Texas A&M 10, they're tied for first. Georgia 8, Florida 7. Arkansas and Kentucky 4. Auburn had to be some one. Tennessee only with five. Any particular team too high or too low? You know, I think that it's surprising to see, you know, Georgia still having that many draft takes after, you know, just year after year of elite talent. Coming through there. So, I mean, credit to Kirby Smart and his team for continuing to develop and find these guys in the portal and through the high school ranks because it's impressive the number, you know, everything that Nick Saban did at Alabama over the years through the draft. I mean, it's just, that's what Kirby's doing. You know, he's made Georgia into that level of NFL pipeline. And it's impressive because, you know, yes, they had a down year by their standards, even though they still won an SEC title and made the playoff. But, you know, they're going to be there. They have some more talent coming through. It's, you know, a reloaded roster. And, you know, we'll see if Gunnar Stockton can work his way into becoming a draft pick this fall because they're going to need him to look like one. I have Spencer Saturday down south. I want to talk a bit more about the draft, but you mentioned Kirby and quarterbacks. Over the weekend, it came down at least as a report, it's a battle for probably the top quarterback of the nation of a high school, Elijah Havens. Ironically, I have a place called Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Lane Kiffin Kingdom down there. But it came down to two other teams, Bama and Georgia. By now we know Haven picked Alabama. You look at that room. First of all, your reaction, you know, how there's optics Alabama beats out Georgia. And next time when Georgia beats out Alabama, the dialogue will go the other way. That's kind of the way the pendulum swings. But the fact that Elijah Havens, Kareem, if I'm wrong, that's at least three five-star quarterbacks in that room. And, oh, by the way, that's before you even talk about that kid from Thompson, who's a number, a mere four-star, is a top quarterback in the state of Alabama, a top player in many people's opinion. But your thoughts just about the quarterback room in Alabama picking up not only a five-star, but literally in the backyard of Lane Kiffin. You know, I have changed my tune on sort of how I react to these high-profile, especially at the quarterback position, commitments out of high school. Because, I mean, in two years, if Lane Kiffin needs a quarterback, I mean, you know, he can get word out to this kid and be like, hey, you know, now we have a starting position open. You know, I just don't know. Quinn Ewers was a big-time commit for Ohio State, didn't really go there. You know, Julian Sane, you know, spent a year at Alabama, and now he's the starter at Ohio State. So, I mean, I guess you can celebrate these commitments, but, like, until the guy actually takes a snap, like, I would bet that he doesn't take a snap. Because Keelan Russell is only a year older than him. And if he went starting jobs in, like, you know, is the five-star kid, any five-star kid, are they going to take, just wait around for two years for their chance? I mean, that's, like, few and far between, and that's also, you know, a lot of NIL money that's being eaten up. So, I mean, I think if Lane Kiffin does end up getting this kid in a couple years, it's like, okay, well, that was actually pretty smart, because he saved a couple years of not having to pay premium NIL for him. So, you know, we'll see where it turns out. But until these guys actually, like, start taking snaps for the school that lands their commitment, like, it's tough for me to get too hyped about it. We've got a little bit of a hiccup there. We'll apologize for the audio there. We've got things ironed out with Brett's audio. Back to the draft, speaking of quarterbacks, obviously the big stir was the Rams taking one tie Simpson in the first round, number 13 overall. And we saw the reaction of the online response from the coaching staff. They have since come back, and obviously they've tried to spin it a different way. But your thoughts objectively about the Rams picking up Ty Simpson, not only picking him up, but that highly. Yeah, you know, I think it's a good pick. I just don't like the value of it there, because I think that they could have traded back. And as long as they didn't trade back past, like, 21, where the Steelers were picking, then, you know, I think that there's a reasonable chance that they would have still gotten him. So I don't like it from him being the number 13 overall pick, because I think he could have gone lower. But I do like the fit with, you know, anybody who is the quarterback in McVay's system. Just, you know, that's a good place to be. You know, that guy is a football genius. You know, he's got a really fun, electric offense. You know, they have Puka. They have Devontae Adams there. So, I mean, those guys, you know, they're loaded at the skill position. So I think that any quarterback would love to be drafted there. It's just, you know, it's just a matter of how long does Stafford play. And I think that sitting behind Stafford is probably a good move for him in the long run. You know, he'll teach him how to be a pro. You know, you can see, you know, the way his mind works. And, you know, I think that that's a great landing spot for him. You know, I do understand. And, you know, they can spin it however they want. But, you know, we saw, I think, the real reaction of McVay on draft night. And I think that the issue there is that they're trying to win now before it's Stafford. So spending a first-round pick on a quarterback is always tough to swallow there. But, you know, great landing spot for Tyson. Not only that, he's going to have better lines as opposed to going to say to the Raiders because, yeah, you're going to make more money. But the good Lord, and they gave you two healthy knees, you get some more, you got to go out of the ninth and then pay for him. So I take a few extra dollars less, keep my knees, and still make – bottom line is true, if you hit the numbers, your second contract is always going to be – that's going to be the honeypot right there. So we'll take this money now, save the knees, and go for that. In your opinion, overall, who was the big winner and who was the big loser in the draft, Adam? Yeah, it's always tough with these draft grades, but, you know, I really liked what the Giants did. You know, I think that they had some needs that they addressed. You know, the Cowboys getting so many defensive players and getting so much value, you know, getting Caleb Downs where they got it. Getting the edge rusher from UCF. Like, I thought that those were really, really good picks. You know, they used the Micah trade well. So, I mean, you know, they – you've got to mention the Eagles. So now I'm just listing off NFC East teams. But I thought that they did. The Eagles do what they do. They take the best player regardless of position, and it's tough to argue with the results. You know, over the years, they've been dominant, a couple of Super Bowls. So, yeah, the NFC East had a really, really good draft. So, you know, that's one that I'm looking at. And then the losers are – you know, the 49ers just – you know, they can defend their picks all they want and how they fit in the scheme and stuff. But the issue isn't the players that they're taking. The issue is where they're taking them. They just need a better evaluation of draft value because, yeah, if you – even if these guys – even if Stribbling becomes their top wide receiver, well, you could have gotten them in the third round. And then you could have known what that player is that you could have gotten in the second round. So, you know, it's tough to – if he becomes an all-pro, they'll be like, well, you know, see, we told you. And it's like, well, you could have maybe had two if you used your second-round pick on somebody of a second-round value. So what they're doing with their draft evaluation, I don't know. But, you know, so I thought that they just didn't get a lot of value out of the draft. And that's not a shot at any of the players that they took. Adam, a chance for you to brag about your team, the Missouri Tigers. Long time, they were in the desert on a horse with no name. And it looks like the Mizzou Tigers ties a record six players drafted. Go ahead and brag about Moe Ty. Yeah, I mean, and they had Zion Young, who could have been a first-round pick. You know, Josiah Trotter was a second-round pick. So, I mean, they, you know, they're producing, like, top-tier talent, too. So, I mean, credit to Eli Drinkwitz. I mean, I think that he's got another potential first-round pick. And one coming through the pipeline in the running back room. You know, and Jamal Roberts is still there, too. So this could be a situation where it's like Jeremiah Love and Jadarian Price. You know, that's the top-end ceiling outcome for that running back room. So I think we're going to hear a Missouri guy get drafted in the first round next year, too. As they say, show me, and I think they will. Adam, for the folks who want to get online with you, what can you show us as to how they can do it? Yeah, SaturdayDownSouth.com. Now, back with Boomo Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Welcome back in quickly. Some breaking news. Wow. Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is taking an immediate leave of absence for gambling addiction. We'll give you more details as they come in. In the meantime, speaking of quarterbacks, a little better news in Tuscaloosa over the weekend. I think Andrew Bone would agree with that. Fine columnist and recruiting editor for Bama Online. I'm part of the aunt3.com family and the fine author of The Road to Bama. Andrew Bone, welcome in. How are you? Hopefully, Andrew is there with us as far as giving us some details. Brendan, you back with us, my friend. Hey, can you hear me? There we go. Andrew is with us. Andrew, we're just sitting here giving us some breaking news about out of love. But the quarterback there, Brendan Sorsby, taking an immediate leave of absence for gambling addiction. But let's go to the other side of the pendulum. Can you do local weather? Because you were spot on with your forecast about the five-star out of Baton Rouge, Lane Kiffin's backyard, Elijah Havens, basically following through, as you predicted, on his way to Tuscaloosa. Let's kind of put this in the layers. First of all, your reaction to the news. Well, I think it was great for Alabama to get a top guy like Haven on board before the summer official visits really begin. And, you know, we've seen it over the last couple of years. Keelan Russell committed to Alabama during the official visit weekend. His first official visit weekend sort of turned into a snowball effect for the rest of the class. It ended up being top three. And, you know, then last summer you had Jet Tamala come in on that first. It wasn't an official visit. He was in just for an unofficial visit. But it was Alabama's first big official visit weekend that he was on campus meeting with the staff. And as we saw, they had a great summer. Now you get Haven on board a month before the official start. And they have a really big official visit weekend coming up on May the 20th. I guess it's May the 29th. Long list of top guys that they're going to have on campus, including Elijah Haven. So I think it was big for them to go ahead and get him on board, go ahead and start reaching out to those guys, communicating. But you have to be impressed with the job that Alabama's been able to do. On the quarterback front, I mean, that's three straight years of having a five-star quarterback in your life. You know, that's almost unheard of, especially, you know, I guess with the transfer portal era, it's a little different now. But, yeah, you never saw that in the past. And even today, you know, with the portal and NIL and all that kind of stuff, you still don't see that today. Andrew, the obvious question is, what's the old saying back in the old days of the Western movies? Is this town big enough for the two of us? Is it big enough for the five of us? They got at least three stars. Trent Seaborn was a player of the year in Alabama. He's a mere four-star. And that's before you can get down the line. I mean, it's obvious. I'd like to see somebody with a better quarterback room. That's the good news. But let's be practical here, Andrew. How do you keep that many stars happy going forward? You can only play, at least by my math, one player at a time. Yeah, I mean, you have some guys who are used to starting. And they are, I think, you know, the two signed last year in Jet Tomala and Caden Kawha and then the two that are in the class issue, Trent Seaborn and Haven, all four of them won state championships last season for their high school teams. Obviously, you know, that's something that is going to be a challenge for Alabama moving forward. And I think, you know, what it kind of shows with probably more so with Haven and Seaborn is the willingness to come in and compete. You know, they understand that Alabama signed two quarterbacks in last year's class and including a five-star in Jet Tomala. And then, you know, Trent Seaborn commits, you know, pretty early, committed last October. Still didn't really matter to Elijah Haven. He still wanted to be a part of the class. And then Trent Seaborn, you know, he's come out and said, you know, the more the better, pretty much. You know, he's happy to get another top-end guy. So now you have some really, you know, high-end players that are going to compete for that starting job. So I think if you're Alabama, you're really excited about that because, you know, the odds are you're going to have a really good quarterback. Here in the future, you know, on the other side of it, you're probably going to lose a player or two eventually because, you know, they didn't win the starting job. And, you know, they don't want to wait around. You know, they're going to feel like, you know, they should get an opportunity to start somewhere. So it's going to be a really intense competition here in the future with those guys. Obviously, right now it's Keelan Russell or Austin Mack. But here in the future, we're going to see a really, really good battle, you know, after those guys move on. You know, one of the benefits of this is having Ty Simpson saying in his post-draft interview, it was good for me to sit, watch, and learn. The other benefit in a perfect world thing to hang on to these guys, can you imagine practice? I mean, think about it. In practice, you want to simulate the other team as much as possible. And that means the starters, if this holds true, they'll be going up against at least one five-star on the practice field. So that would make Saturday a little more manageable. The question now is the obvious one, I think, Andrew. It's great to get these quarterbacks, but everybody knows until Alabama comes up with a good offensive line, how far can you take it? How much of a priority is on the O-line going forward on the recruiting front? Well, I think it's always going to be an area that they want to have success and bring in top guys. Now, does that mean bring in top guys from the high school front, or are they going to bring top guys in from the transfer portal? And as we saw last year or this past recruiting cycle, they went heavy on the offensive front in both high school and the transfer portal. So they have several guys that are young, that they believe in, but they also have to see how those guys develop over the course of the next year. But I think that, you know, you look at it and you have four high school players that transferred in. You have, or excuse me, that signed with Alabama. You had a JUCO player that signed with Alabama. But then you also had two transfers that came in as redshirt freshmen. So that's a really big group of young players that are going to be able to compete. Now, I don't think they are really pressing that hard to sign a lot of high school offensive linemen in this year's class. Now, they might end up getting one. They could end up getting two. But we don't really see this as a big year on the high school front. I think we're probably going to see a little bit more in the transfer portal after the season, especially with Coach Clem coming in. The new offensive line coach didn't get in Tuscaloosa until February. They know that the high school recruiting is going to be probably on the lower end as far as numbers, just because of the success that they had last cycle. So now Coach Clem evaluates all the guys that are on his team, kind of sees where he's at throughout the season, and then starts targeting more in the portal. So that's where I think Alabama is going to have the most success as far as offensive linemen. But I will mention one player. He just won the overall MVP award at the Rivals Camp in Nashville this past week. And that's Antonio Berry out of Tupelo High School. This is a guy to really kind of watch. He's the number 32 overall player in the country, which is in that five-star category. And winning the MVP this past weekend, that could certainly push him up even higher. So we're going to watch him very closely. He came out of that camp saying that Alabama was in the driver's seat for him at this time and going to take an official visit in June. So he's certainly a guy that we're watching closer than probably anybody right now as far as high school players. Andrew, before you jump off, has anyone asked you, okay, Alabama got a five-star quarterback over the weekend, but who's next? How busy will the month of May slash June be? We know normally back in the day June was busy. How busy would this May and June be for Alabama? I think May is certainly a critical month. And even right now, because you have all the coaches that are out on the road during the spring contact period, but it's also an evaluation period. I mean, you are going in home, visiting with your top targets, but also their families. You're going to get an idea of really what it's going to take once these official visits begin. What are going to be the most important factors for them on these visits? What do they want to see? What do they want to hear? What kind of offer are they going to get? So you're going to see all of that, but you're also out there evaluating guys in spring practice. A guy that you may have offered that you have considered a top guy, but you haven't seen him in a couple months. You go out there, see him work on the practice field, maybe he's not as good as you once thought he was, and he comes off your board a little bit. Or you go see somebody that you haven't offered, all of a sudden that's a guy that moves up high on the board and you extend an offer to. So there's a lot that kind of goes on during this period right before the official visits begin on May the 29th to get these guys that they really want to target to campus for the start of the summer. So it's going to be an interesting couple months for Alabama. They're sitting at six commitments. I always say by the time you get to August, as we've seen the last couple years, they're going to have at least 20 commitments probably by then. And as we've seen the last few years, it tends to be one of the best classes in the country. So I would expect nothing else in this cycle once again. As they come in, we know you're going to have it all covered. Andrew, where can we get the very latest with you online? And they say that the beach is calling, which means you may want to pack a good book. Talk to us about where we can catch up with you online and your book. Time to say hello to Brian Matthews, senior editor at auburnsports.com. Brian, welcome in. How are you? I am doing great. Thanks for having me on. And we appreciate you taking time out. Let's just jump right in. Obviously, a lot to get to today. As you well know, you've got an Auburn buffet for us. But I would imagine it's always recruiting season. Your thoughts about picking up. Anytime you get a four or five star, that makes ripples in the water. Talk to us about Auburn landing top 24-7 running back, Meissen Johnson. Of course, you've got to have a hyphen. If you're good, you've got to have a hyphen. Right? So, it's Meissen Johnson Cook. So, Brian Smith, Matthews, what can you tell us? Well, Auburn beat out Miami and a bunch of other really good schools for him. He is, I think, our number four running back in the country. He's about 6'1 1⁄2", 220. So, he's got a really, really nice size. And he's a former athlete slash receiver. He's gotten a lot bigger over the last couple of years and has transitioned to running back, but has a whole lot of top-end speeds and really good quickness. Just a really, really high upside as a running back. You can see him, you know, eventually, if he can hold on to the ball and become more physical, do all the other things you've got to do, pass spot, but you can see him developing into a big play, premium back in the SEC in the coming years. Can you repeat what state he's from and what a coincidence it is that his coaching staff may have something in common with that state? Can you repeat that to Brian? He is from East St. Louis, Illinois, I believe, if I'm not mistaken. And that's always been a rich area for Alabama. That's been a good fertile ground over the years. It's one of those areas up there that produces a lot of talent. So let's talk about, not only that, it's not only the landing someone of that ilk, but it's also the timing of it. Let's face it, these kids are social media hungry. Anytime you get a guy like that, that tends to feed it. You get one guy in a class. That's why these coaches want to get a quarterback of high-profile status early so they can recruit off that. Talk to us about where things are on the recruiting cycle compared to, say, oh, a year ago under Mr. Goffer. Well, it's interesting. And recruiting, I think, is so much more interesting now than it was maybe five, six, seven years ago. But Auburn had three commitments. So they're not going to be rated high because they don't have enough players committed. Other teams, seven, eight, ten, I think at least one school is close to 20 or at 20. So, you know, as far as that goes, that's still working progress. But, you know, they've got a four-star defensive lineman, one of the top players in the state, that has been more. They've got George Lemons, a four-star tight end from Georgia. So they're off to a really good start. I think in high school recruiting now, you just have to be really, really careful. If you're going to go after a premium player like a quarterback, you know, are you willing to invest all the money into that player, you know, with the concern that if he doesn't play year one, he may be gone. So you've just got to be really, really careful. And can you get a better play out of the portal? If you want a quarterback, are you better off getting a three-star quarterback that you feel like has potential to be a future starter and develop him and keep him in the program for three or four years or take a risk on a guy that you think can play right away but you're not sure and a five-star. So there's so many decisions now that have to be made, whether you take a kid or who you pursue and who you don't pursue. So that'll go into it. But recruiting season is here now. The kids are still taking official visits. Coaches go on the road. Official visits start in about a month. You bring up a good point, Brian. We were talking earlier with some of the folks who don't have a dog in the hunt as far as following one specific school. In other words, some of these national guys, they've been on with us. And they've brought up, I think, a point that everybody knows but sometimes overlooks. A lot of times these kids want to go to a high-profile school basically knowing they may sit on the bench, but an opposing coach may not be as hard on this kid because they want him to go to that school, knowing they're not going to play. But they can come back a year or two from now, especially somebody from the state that goes out of state, and they can get the same kid at a bargain price. That's right. And there's the other angle, too, of you're seeing the Sovereign staff build a bunch of relationships, relationships with kids they're trying to sign right now and get committed, and relationships with kids they probably think they're not going to get, but they could get a year from now or two years from now when they get in the portal, and maybe at a cheaper price than that kid wants right now. So there's so much more that goes into recruiting at the high school level right now. So let's go forward here. Again, we'll reiterate ourselves here. We know that they've got a four-star in. The first thing recruiting for Nets is going to ask, Brian, who's next? Well, I'm probably the wrong person to ask that because I'm the team guy. Aren't we all? I'm covering baseball and, you know, football, and, you know, I'm not as into recruiting as I used to be, so I don't have a great answer for you. But just because of what's happening now, I would expect most of the big decisions to happen once we get into mid-June to mid-July and those officials start happening and then players wrap up their officials and start making a lot of decisions at the start of July. You know, the thing is, one thing that helps is momentum. Whether it's on game day or in the offseason with recruiting, and right now you picked up the four-star running back, that is, I say, you, Auburn, and then you had something that hadn't happened in a while with the recent NFL drought, a kid that goes in the first round. That can't be bad optics either. Your thoughts just overall about what things are without its goals going forward, cash again on the draft, not only in the first round, but some other folks. Yeah, well, first of all, I think Keldrick is a terrific person on the field. He's going to be a, he's going to be pros pro for the Titans. I think that was a great job of them to move up and get him. I just think he's a guy that's going to play for 10-plus years in the NFL and be a really good player and be a great person off the field, too. Keron Crawford, I just think what a story. A year from now, a year ago, you know, he had played as a backup at Auburn and had one and a half tackles for loss and no sacks. Nobody was pegging him as a draft pick. He worked his tail off to become the player he's become. And I think he's got more upside to go. I don't think he's a finished product yet. So I think the Raiders got a guy in the third round that had a good season in the SEC and can get a lot better once he adds more bulk, more size, and develops more pass moves. So that's good. You know, Connell Lou, again, a fourth round pick had he been healthy. Might have been a lot higher. Goes to Bingo. They need help on the offensive line. You know, if he can get going there, you know, he can be a great piece to offense. They've got a great quarterback that needs to need to build, you know, a better team around him. So I think that's a nice pick. Jeremiah Wright, another story of a guy who played offensive line, defensive line, back to offensive line. just really worked hard to become a starter the last couple of years. You know, and has a chance to probably be a backup year one and maybe step into the starting lineup here in the next couple of years. We'll see. And then Bobby Jameson, Travis, another great story, was a backup, not much known about him, worked his tail off to be a starter this year at Nose Guard and is going to get a chance to play in the NFL now at the Sixth Elbeck with the Giants and the Auburn officer had. I think it was four players signed free agent contracts and the other one get a a camp invite, I think it's called. So a good round of drafting and free agent signings, I think, for Auburn this time. Brian Matthews, AuburnSports.com. Let's talk now that the dust has settled indoors with Stephen Pearl. One thing we know about this roster, it's going to be tall, is it not? Talk to us about now that the dust has settled as far as 2026-2027 Auburn basketball's roster. And you went to say you're not two champions Stephen Pearl, right? Yeah, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. That was my second line there. There you go, there you go. But yes, much, much taller. Okay, so they signed the kid out of France, Narcisse Ingoi, I think is how you say it. Maybe we'll figure it out. He's a seven-footer. They got a transfer from another seven-footer, Bucky Aboye, from Santa Clara. They got Owen Freeman, formerly of Iowa, and then Creighton, a six-tenner. Thomas Dow from Troy, I think it's six-eight. Adam Olsen got some size. So they have definitely added some bulk to that four and five position. And I think a couple of those guys, like Dowd and Olsen, of course, could play the three. George Kimball, they got the latest pickups there. He's a combo guard. He can rotate between one and two with Kevin Overton and Todd Pettiford. So they needed that bad. The only thing they're really missing now in this class of portal, the portal class, is the wing. And they're still looking really hard at Mantis. Ruba Staff is just, I think that's how you might say it. He's from Lithuania. He's a very, very good wing, good three-point shooter, good athlete. If they could land him, that would be a pretty good team they put together, a team with much more wings on the perimeter, much more size. Do you speak Lithuanian or French? If not, I'm going to suggest that you start getting a subscription to Babel out there. Just about all rushes now. Just when Philip Yovic was teaching me how to speak, you know, he takes off to California. So, you know, I'm kind of lost now. I've got to get back with somebody and get my lessons going again. How do you say goodbye in Lithuania? Before we say goodbye, talk to us about Auburn baseball. It's hard to believe we're coming up, as they say, they've got the seventh inning stretch. We're coming up on the stretch run here for ACC baseball. Yeah, I thought that was a great series win. Auburn's won four straight series. The only other team that's done something similar to Texas A&M is at least won five straight and they play at, Auburn plays at Texas A&M this weekend. That's going to be a big, big series. Yeah. For both teams and in the SEC standings, Auburn's in the top five and the remaining schedule is against three other teams in the top five including number one Georgia to close out the season at home. Number one as their first place in the SEC and not number one in the country that's UCLA. But, yeah, terrific weekend. Eric Guevara batted over 500 with, I think, three home runs during the week at SEC player of the week. And then Ethan Bingaman who hit three home runs had seven RBIs to help Auburn win Sunday in the rubber game. He got SEC co-freshman of the week. He batted 500 of the week with, I think, four home runs total and nine RBIs. So, just a terrific week by those guys at the plate. Before you jump off, speak to us, where can we get the latest Tiger Talk with you? Yeah, I appreciate you guys and we will have plenty of coverage of recruiting, football, basketball portal, and baseball and other sports too all there at AuburnSports.com. What a weekend for the Atlanta Braves. Two out of three says meet low, faint, bad. The Braves now, get this, a six and a half game lead over the second place. Marlins, seven over the Nationals. Here's the sweet spot. The Phillies and Mets, are you ready for this? Both of them, ten and a half games back. Who saw that coming? A lot of folks might have said the Braves coming out of spring could be first, but who was predicted that the Phillies and the Mets are tied for last behind the Braves in the National League East? noticed over the years that on off switch when I get that thing down pat I'm going to be a genius baby in the meantime let's talk about a man who knows the state of Alabama from the hills of North Alabama to the white shores of the other end of the state Ben Thomas comes at us from old Bill when it comes to covering AL.com he's got it all covered BT welcome in happy Monday to you how are you hey guys I'm doing good Brett my IT department just tells me to restart when I got rebooted rebooted how did we ever get to this point Ben I still remember I'm not going to say the story that's crazy but I'll just put it this way technology can you imagine your grandma and grandpa coming back and saying what you got a phone that doesn't have a cord on it you can call from the north can you imagine if they could come back and see the world now we might be better off I guarantee you yeah I mean I remember my parents first phone was like that bag phone you guys remember that yes I do I don't think they ever used it I think they just kept it in the car in case there was you know car problems or whatever but yeah I mean you know certainly the cell phone invention and the things that have come along have added to our our life in a lot of ways but there's something there's something about being back in Mayberry where we can just call the operator and all that you know funny story about that phone I actually this is a true story I went to a charity golf tournament and somehow some way I actually won that that big phone that big old block it had a bag with it and I had no idea what to do with it nobody that's like what is this so I hate to admit it but it's as I said in Blazing Saddles it's through it is through let's talk something else that's true Ben in the modern era with all these changes something was almost a staple back in the day and that was spring games your thoughts about the AHSAA's decision to allow teams to basically put it in their courts you can opt out your thoughts about how spring games are handled across the state now yeah I mean it seems to work I mean you know they do have the choice they've had it for the last couple years where they can basically forego the traditional two week spring in favor of an extra week of practice in the August or I guess in late July depending on when the calendar runs and I think it's good coaches can decide you know whatever's best for their their teams a lot of the smaller schools opt for that extra week because you know most of their athletes are playing baseball or soccer or whatever and there's really no point in having the spring so I talk to a lot of coaches about it there's you know a lot of differing opinions on I know Phillip Rivers they've always had they've always gone for the extra week in the fall I know some coaches like Mark Hutzfeth who both get coaches by the way you guys know well but Mark Hutzfeth told me that they'll always have a spring because it gives them a chance to work with the younger kids if nothing else so I think it's good there's still some interesting spring games that we should be able to get a look at we had a list of some of them on AL.com today and they're actually at a time usually they come during state baseball and softball but this week a lot of them are the week before that so I'd have a chance to get a good scout report on some of them let's have a little fun with that who's more competitive Mark Hutzfeth or Phillip Rivers oh man well I mean Mark Hutz Hutzfeth competitive now but I don't know that I've ever met anybody that's more competitive than Rivers you know it's interesting you bring that up we have a story about him today so one website has listed him now as the next hot NFL TV free agent wow I don't know if you've seen this or not but you know he's so so they're talking about you know maybe being a commentator going on and being a commentator which he would be great at by the way yeah but he told me he told me when he first you know retired the first time and you know took over at St. Michael Catholic that you know he considered that he'd had some people talking to him but it just didn't feel like he could not be involved in the scoreboard you know that he wanted the input because he was that competitive he wanted an impact on the game so we'll see I actually messaged with him today and he said no one's officially contacted him on that so I don't know whether that'll happen with him or not I do think and I've still got to sit down with him and just talk to him because I do think his return to the NFL has kind of sparked a different interest in him I always thought for the last five years when he was at St. Michael that this is his life for the rest of his life he loved being a high school football coach I think he still does but now I think there's a general interest in you know what I could do this on the NFL level too that's right so you know it'll be interesting to see where his future leads him Randy Kennedy is you put him on to us but he had an article is 2027 quarterback class the best in state history which is saying a lot Gunner Rivers who you just talked about Jameson Roberts at Sarah Land there's always somebody from Sarah Land Trent Seaborne we've talked with you about the one guy that just amazes me and Randy told us about this last year Cole Moody from Southside Selma now once again this kid's in the 8th grade let me emphasize that he's in the 8th grade he led the nation in passing last year with 5,350 yards they went undefeated in the regular season averaging 57 points a game I wonder why they've got a receiver Cedric Simmons who caught 99 passes for 2,000 yards I had to research this twice because I thought it was fabricated BT talk about some of the best quarterbacks in the history of the state yeah really really interesting story by Randy that's on our site now posted yesterday and we've talked about this he and I have just discussed it because you know you mentioned the three I guess the three real headliners in it all of which are committed you know Gunnar Rivers now committed to his dad's alma mater at NC State Jameson Roberts from Sierra Land is committed to Oklahoma and Trent Seaborn obviously committed to Alabama and they just got another high profile quarterback commitment in recent days so it'll be interesting to see how that plays out that doesn't even that doesn't even include guys like Bobby Coleman the younger brother of Cam Coleman is committed to Georgia State Christian Seager from Daphne is committed to South Alabama there's other good quarterbacks as well so it's certainly a high profile group as we've seen in a long long time and it'll be interesting to see how those guys succeed in this senior year and the Mr. Football race is going to be incredible I think this year with all three of those guys in it and it's interesting Brad that you brought up Cole Moody because just today there was some news on that front his dad Charles Moody who was his head coach at Southside Selma today was announced as the head coach of guess where Selma High School so he's going to Southside Selma to Selma High School and we can certainly assume that his son is going to follow him to Selma High School so that's going to be a 2A Southside versus a 4A Selma next fall so that's an interesting move but good story check out that story by Randy if you can on the AL.com site because it's really you know obviously our state's had some incredible quarterback classes some incredible quarterbacks in the past from Joe Namath to well not Joe Namath but from Kenny Stabler to you know all the other guys that have come through KJ Lacey is now at Texas Pat Sullivan won the Heisman Trophy just plenty of guys so check that list out by Randy James Winston wasn't too bad either at least certainly at the college range was he coming out of the state before going to Florida State Ben Thomas AL.com Ben talk to us about we get so busy and sometimes we don't see all the fine print but there's a lot of mamas and daddies and grandparents who may not know this term now but at some point they may the Alabama high school athletic association clarified in the wording of the CHOOSE that's an acronym CHOOSE Act Governor Kay Ivey signing on the Let the Kids Play Act Ben for the folks who may not be familiar now that may impact kids everywhere including here in our listing area what does that all mean? Well I'll try my best to describe it I've been a little confused on it myself but basically the CHOOSE Act is the you know the governor's plan that anybody who wants to receive a private school education can receive a $7,000 certificate or what have you to go towards that and that's been the whole debate I mean ultimately this is in my mind what led us to where we are now with the separation of private and public schools it's the main thing that kind of ignited it and so they've come back in recent weeks you know the governor signed the Let the Kids Play Act which is you know that basically says you know they won't be ineligible because they received this CHOOSE Act fund and the high school association clarified some of their language which said the same thing but here's the deal you can still be ineligible if you receive the CHOOSE Act fund what I'm trying to say is you can't be ineligible solely because you received that that's not a disqualifier but you still have to meet the general rules of the Alabama High School Athletic Association which means you have to make a bona fide move when that's necessary and being good standing at that type thing so that's the difference I mean yes the CHOOSE Act itself can't make you ineligible but you've still got you're still supposed to follow the rules the other rules of the high school association if that makes sense I read that twice and I didn't get it either I understand what they're the principle of what they're trying to do you put in an article today about the second round of the high school baseball playoffs we'll be talking about that in more detail tomorrow later this week seven teams from the shows I won't go through all the lists but Dasher Central Lauderdale County Red Bay Morris Hill Phil Campbell Russell a lot of very good teams playing I know your staff will be covering that throughout the week a lot of the games are Thursday with a doubleheader Friday or Friday with a doubleheader and then the rubber match on Saturday and your staff always does a great job of covering these and also by the way you had another article the two top high school coaches in the state of Alabama are going to be meeting the first game of the season their BT Danny Horn Paul Benefield 374 for Danny 368 wins for Paul two big ones starting the season yeah that's going to be I think it's August 21st I don't have it right in front of me right now but yeah it is playing in that game and honestly neither one of them there's been some talk actually it's even been online that this is Danny Horn has announced this is his final year he told me he hasn't announced that yet but it would not surprise me if this is the final year for both Danny Horn and Paul Benefield two Hall of Famers I think that story is yet to be told but if that is the case what a way for them to open up the season against each other the two winningest coaches I mean I don't you know I'm not it'll be a long time if ever if anybody passes their records no matter when they retire so that'll be that'll be an interesting game obviously Paul Benefield and Pipe opened against Maplesville last year and got beat pretty good and of course we found out soon that Maplesville was the real deal and went on to win the state championship so two class guys I mean I hope it's not the final year for them because they're both I think they've both done it the right way they're both class guys enjoy talking to them but it is an intriguing matchup for the first game of the year for sure well Ben Thomas does it the right way baseball this week I know you got previews what else is on the agenda for this week on AL.com man Brett it's hard to keep track man we're in that where basically somebody's playing every night except for maybe Sunday night you know we got soccer playoffs continuing tonight and tomorrow around the state as they get ready to narrow it down to head to Huntsville really at the end of next week I think they'll be in Huntsville for the final four so that's getting narrowed down state track meets for this week in Gulf Shores and Coleman I think the one in Gulf Shores starts on Thursday and Coleman on Friday so we'll have some coverage of that and like you said Brett Baseball really there's I don't know if there are any games on Wednesday but there are a lot on Thursday and Friday and obviously Friday so and some good matchups Bob Jones going to Vestavia Hills is a great matchup in 7-8 so there's a lot of other good matchups you mentioned Deschler and some of the other ones so we're trying to keep you updated as best we can on all that stuff but it's a busy year it's a busy time of the year Huntsville in Gulf Shores there needs to be more than one Ben Thomas Ben where can we jump online and get the very latest with you yeah just AL.com go to the high school sports section also love for you to subscribe to our newsletters if you haven't done that yet we're proud of that particularly the one that thoughts from Alabama baseball head coach Rob Vaughn following Friday's doubleheader at Tennessee we're already down some guys to start and you lose two in the game yesterday and we got a lot of dudes beat up right now and so I think from a recovery standpoint is number one we got to try to get our bodies back underneath this as best we can and then all the stuff we got to do man like stuff we did on Wednesday when we got here man we got to keep hammering out kind of our approach at the plate that's kind of been hit or miss the consistency of us is not where it needs to be so we're going to hammer that out and then just continue banging away at the defense man I know it's easy to look at and say hey we kick the ball around we don't work on it we work on it a whole whole lot but we got to get a lot better at it so we're going to put a heavy instance on that as well this week I'll have more in a moment this year we honor this year we honor the most important anniversary ever an event that reshapes civilization as we know it a day that would lead to something so flawless that nothing could ever really compare people have tried to match it but have failed this year we celebrate the production of the Crimson Tide Sports Network from Learfield the score now back with Boomo Bugg on 93.9 the score the score welcome back here what do you say we talk big orange with the V-man Vince Roran 99.1 the sports animal in Knoxville also on the ball radio network V-man welcome in how are you gentlemen how are we doing we're doing okay now that the draft has come and gone Vince your thoughts looking at it through orange glasses what's the take from Knoxville well the biggest story was Jermon McCoy and his fall down to the fourth round I mean he's a he's a top 10 top 15 talent he's an all-american either the number one or number two corner in the draft and really unfortunate because you didn't hear anything during the pre-draft process about the medical being a concern or red flag or anything like that it's the reports that came out late just the week of the draft or maybe you know the weekend before and so because I think a lot of that news came late seems like not everyone had you know the ability to go back and check that when getting that intel and so you couldn't go bring him in for another medical check with your own doctors anything like that so I think that spooked a lot of teams and so the leaders had some time clearly to think about it to start the fourth round they moved up one pick and took him and this is not about hey you know he should have come because some fans are like he should have he should have played last year to show that he was healthy or he should have come back to school he made a mistake it's not about that the health of the knee supposedly formed the ACL tear that he heard in workouts in January that has healed fine they also found a plug that was used in repair for something else that they think is going to need to get fixed and have a more extensive recovery time from so that's something the NFL flagged and they're going to flag it whether he came back last year whether he came back this year or he's an All-American next year or whatever and so there's just been a lot of misinformation and misopinions on that it is unfortunate for him he says he's just going to trust what the Raiders want to do for him if they want him to have the surgery now or wait so that was the biggest story Colton Hood going to the second round he's another guy that expectations were for him to maybe go in the first round he went in the second round of the Giants and then you had three other guys taken with Chris Brazel the second ball third round to the Carolina Panthers Joshua Joseph fifth round to the Washington Commanders and then Tyree West in the seventh round to the Detroit Lions I actually listed seven balls that could get drafted three of those excuse me four of those seven I had as good team fit among the top three team fits for each of those players so they landed in some really good spots based on how you looked at it and how it could have possibly gone and then Joey Aguilar the biggest name among the undrafted free agents he latches on with the Jacksonville Jaguars which is also one of the best three team fits that I saw for Aguilar the after round one the SEC was needed to go division two after they finished second to the Big Ten and mile mile what happened the remainder of the draft the SEC finishes with another record 87 the Big Ten 68 the ACC and the Big 12 who had six in the first round finished with 38 do you think they're going to let the SEC play again this fall yeah I'm sure the Big Ten is lobbying for something else but yeah I think because of the money that's there sure they will let them play football it is it is certainly something the way people reacted to it they react to the SEC I'll say this obviously Texas and Oklahoma add to the to the SEC's total but you know what USC or UCLA didn't so but USC Washington Oregon these are now members of the Big Ten that up their total as well so it kind of works both ways and I just saw CBS Sports had a 2027 way too early mock Texas has four of the top ten so they're like this year's Ohio state in terms of players that are in there and there's plenty of other SEC guys in that mock draft for next year as well so we'll see how that plays out because as we saw with the quarterbacks a lot of players that they thought were going to be sure five first round picks next year either didn't go in the draft or didn't have a great season so you just never know well let's face it you can't argue that right now the Big Ten has their top heavy but the ACC is deeper I think the numbers bear that out the national championship it's all cyclical B-Man let's talk a little bit about Tennessee basketball it's a busy time has it does settle as far as putting together a roster and Mr. Barnes is pretty good shopping is he not with the portal he is and they are guys they are seven for seven in players that have come to visit Tennessee and all seven of them have ended up signing now after the last one was signed today so six in the portal and then one addition to the high school signing class so pretty efficient and they they're doing an amazing job now there's still three spots to be filled they have six portal ads they have four high school signees and they have two returning players so 12 so you can get up to 15 they probably still need another post and then just for for some depth and then the biggest questions are Jew cares Wake Forest one of the top players still out there in the portal he's still talking you know he's looking at the NBA draft but talk to one local basketball analyst for the draft and he says he's probably a second round pick so that would seem unlikely that he would stay in the draft to be a second round pick and then it's down to Michigan and Tennessee for Jew cares oh by the way Jalen Harrelson from Notre Dame that just officially signed with Tennessee from the portal has the same agent as Jew cares maybe that doesn't mean anything at all maybe it does we'll see but something to keep an eye on for sure you know Michigan's willing to have anyone cut any sort of check that it takes maybe he doesn't make a decision based on that we'll see but there's that and then Nate Amen he declared for the draft he can come back I think it's extremely unlikely but Tennessee as much as they love Nate Amen I don't think they're going to fill a 15th spot and not have him be able to come back to the University of Tennessee so they'll probably add one more player and then see what happens with Duke Harris from Wake Forest Nate the before Braden Liu and correct me on that last name from Kennesaw State Antoine Tedway coach there Tennessee six incoming transfers combined 85.9 points per game they made 283 pointers all of the criticism Rick Barnes has gotten for defense first offense second I think he did something about that this time absolutely Miles Rubin is more of a defensive guy Braden Liu is more of a defensive guy even though he's a 6'9 post that has taken almost 200 three-point attempts he hasn't made a huge percentage of them but here's the thing with these guys Rick Barnes hasn't suddenly changed his philosophy and given up on defense those things are still going to be demanded of these players the difference is that he's bringing in players that are higher level more game SEC ready offensively and so they can be threats across the board and he can get them to defend because they're willing to be coached hard they're willing to become better defenders and better all around players the guys are the right mindset the connects the Gillespie the Laniers those guys were ready to were good and ready to jump it to the next level Rick Barnes just brought in a lot more of these guys instead of having one now if he can turn all these guys into better all around players and defenders to go with the offensive ability and threats to shoot and score with versatility all over the floor that's when Tennessee can take it to another level and that's what they're banking on by bringing in these offensive players because they can get them to defend much better and just be a better offensive team on top of that absolutely listen tell us where we can get all of your great stuff number one and number two can you confirm that Alabama baseball is the worst defensive team in the SEC after losing two or three I know they made I think it was five errors maybe more than that they knocked ball all around the park but it stayed in the park yeah and I don't even think all the errors really told the story of you know how bad they played defensively I was shocked the numbers were bad coming in they were maybe 15th in the SEC they look like the 16th best defensive team or 17th yeah Tennessee looked like the best defensive team so that was a big difference maker that and starting pitching on Friday the double headers so yeah huge win for Tennessee very disappointing for Bama and then Tennessee and Alabama Pat Murphy Karen Weekley they're battling game three I think I'm going to be there tonight to see the series on the line with those two big softball powers tonight here and Tom Canterbury of course in the house for the Crimson Todd here at Knoxville but yeah you can follow me on all the socials at Vince Sports V-I-N-C-E Sports Instagram Facebook Twitter slash X all that kind of fun stuff so I appreciate everybody checking that out maybe the Alabama girls can go over and teach the boys how to play defense amongst other things you think that might work V-Man he'll try anything at this point right there you go on 93.9 the score the score and he is warming up to drive you home this afternoon down in Tuscaloosa Alabama Ryan Fowler host of the game on Tide 109 FM in T-Town Ryan welcome in let's hope you had a five star weekend how are you oh yeah no complaints here no complaints here just you know spending a lot of time reflecting on this day 15 years ago I'll never forget I'm driving to Tuscaloosa right now and looking over here a lot of scars still in my town and I'll never forget it it was a day that I'll never forget I walked into this town looking and trying to help 30 minutes 45 minutes after the tornado I was looking for my brother because I couldn't get in touch with him and it was just a devastation man I hope I never see something like that again but you know I also think about the spirit of the state of Alabama and our community here in Tuscaloosa I think about the football team that gave us an area to escape you know the 2011 team but I think about heroes too because you know were sold by so much that division sells in our society you know Republicans against Democrats independents against everybody you know race religion all of the above and that day I don't remember seeing anybody ask hey you know what color are you you know can I stop that bleeding oh I'm sorry you're Republican I can't do that or it was it was a human spirit that you know it was so negative but it was so positive to be able to see the response you know the devastation and I mean literally like guys I mean I'm right now driving through an area where there was 15 kids that were killed I mean right here right here Rosedale Courts McKenzie Courts right here off Greensboro Avenue and I mean it's just I mean 800 people were treated in a first hour window at our local trauma center here in Tuscaloosa so I think about those responders and you know those guys don't get a lot of pats on the back but days like today where you spend a lot of time reflecting on the job that they did and just you know your average good Samaritan just taking a t-shirt off and bleeding from somebody bleeding to death it was anyway I know you guys didn't ask me about that but that's on my mind all day today and get ready to do a four hour show and kind of remember to pay in tribute to April 27 2011 I appreciate you bringing it up because at the end of the day it shows you where the priority should be and you talked about all that division I still remember an old Don McLean song called American Pie he saw the devil dancing with delight when he sees all this division out there I guarantee he is having a party when he sees the house divided but the other thing about it football tends to bring people back we saw it as you mentioned in Tuscaloosa we saw it earlier with the folks in Louisiana with Katrina and over the weekend another shot of good news it's amazing what a five star commit particularly a five star quarterback commit can do to a fan base in the so called offseason is it not Ryan yeah Elijah Haven brings a lot of energy what a what a what a pick up but you know I'm old enough to remember I put this on Twitter and people thought I was being sarcastic I'm old enough to remember a lot of people said that Kaelin DeBoer was not going to be able to recruit to South now you can't find those guys anywhere now I mean they are they are long gone but we remember those days because for you know the first six months they created a lot of negative static around this program and say you what from a recruiting standpoint I know recruiting has changed regardless he's adjusted he's evolved he's adapted to a level that is I mean you go to Baton Rouge and I know the Baton Rouge folks are playing it off like oh it ain't no big deal it ain't no big deal it's nothing here we didn't want him and all this sort of stuff I promise you what would the narrative be if Lane Kippen would have come to Tuscaloosa Alabama and took a five star from Hillcrest High School or we call it County High for those outside of the area Tuscaloosa County High we just call it County High down here if they had come here and got a five star what would that be I tell you what it'd be right right it'd jump in it was what happened with Florida State came and got Jameis Winston in Alabama's backyard yeah I mean think about that I mean that's but that's you know it was 45 minutes north right in Birmingham in the metro it's a big city Alabama can't get them all but yeah and Jameis Winston was a heck of a player man I remember watching him in Hueytown as a freshman matter of fact the County High program I was just talking about watched them and I remember watching him play as a true freshman he was one of the most dynamic players that I've witnessed at the high school level man he was he was young but he was he was good from the get go but can't wait to watch Elijah Haven but I'll tell you what it's a big catalyst for this program you know and as you said counter a little bit of the negativity that's here you know and I know there's been some negativity I guess it kind of stemmed up from the contract extension you know guys anybody that knew that Jimmy Sexton and knew the demand for Kalen Boer and they were real it wasn't just like an agent you know agent type move no I mean Kalen Boer had two opportunities to leave here that I know of Penn State and Michigan and he turned down both of them he turned down both of them didn't even didn't even listen to Penn State and I don't think he listened to Michigan and really what happens is a lot of times this is agent stuff right it's agent agents are talking and you know they reach out through your agent but I've said this before just reading the tea leaves Kalen Boer must really believe that he can get this program to the level of expectation that he wants it there because he turned down you know a blank check not just on his salary but also in his coaching from a you know coaching salary but NIO as well so he he believes that he can get this program to the level that Alabama fans want if not I believe he would have left but I think he believes in the product that he's building he's put a lot of energy in it you know you can see him and you'll see him Wednesday at the regions he's lost a lot of weight he's worked his butt off in the last year and a half and I know there's some fans that you know want him to be Nick Saban Nick Saban's not coming out retirement Daylon Boer was in a hot demand and that's why Greg Byrne one of the smartest ADs in the SEC signed him because he knew he couldn't afford to lose him that's why and I've seen so many fans that are so confused let's go back to 8th grade you ever taken an econ class where we studied the basic logic of supply and demand there's not enough great coaches out there in the world of college football and if you don't believe me ask the team across the state they had to go fishing you know in a smaller pond because there's just not enough quality and I'm not saying Alex Coles is not going to be but he's still to be proven right and you're taking a chance every time you go and get one of those small just like Florida we don't have to pick on Auburn John Summerall now we think he's going to be good at Florida but we don't know he's going to be good at Florida but I think Greg Byrne was willing to pay an extra two million dollars a year and give him some more incentives because he looks at the product that he's billing and I think if you're close to this program you can feel it you can see it and Elijah Haven is just a it's a confirmation of what he's been able to do early part in Tuscaloosa Ryan another way to get five star quarterbacks and transfer portal additions is to put ten players in the NFL draft I was listening I was reading some of the Alabama media last week well I don't know if they're even going to get anybody in the first round voila they got two I was glad to see Josh Quavis I thought he would go Justin Jefferson Parker Browsford at the beginning of the season a lot of people thought he might be sooner but Greg Byrne sometimes you got to bet on yourself that was a business decision but Ryan once again when the Alabama coaches say we can get you to the NFL they prove it every year they do they do and I think that's the one area is when you think about the NFL it goes through Tuscaloosa I mean you know if people say why that's not true look at the stats and it really it has slowed down some but it slowed down everywhere what was it next Ohio State they had 11 now you could also counter that and say well they should have more they should have had more you know whatever success out of this year and I think that's fair I don't think that's unfair but also look at it and I think about you know what this program has been able to build and the foundation that Nick Saban took it to the level of the NFL it is it's fun to cover it and you know I think about Ty Simpson he should be the poster for the transfer portal yeah he should be he should be the for this particular era that you know what hard work does it does work it does work and it pays off and to be able to see him come to Tuscaloosa hold on develop and being able to land you know this type of contract is pretty it's pretty special it's remarkable but it also speaks to the faith that Ty Simpson has not only the powers that be but also in the system because let's face it here's a kid that reportedly turned down six million plus to enter the portal last year to go to school X, Y, or Z I'm looking at the numbers here Ty Simpson signing ball alone is over twice that almost 15 million his total value 25 million I'm not good at math but by turning down the NIL deal Ty Simpson is going to make about 20 million plus by opting that path as opposed to going to the NIL well well and think about it I mean he made the right because also what Ty is doing is he's going to a area that he can for one be set up for success because we've heard Nick Saban so many different times you talk about those bad and I don't want to say bad franchises but you can go to the wrong place and the guys around you he is set up with a I mean just an absolute perfect opportunity for him to for him to sit there and to be able to watch but it just you know I want to and at some point this week I'd like to be able to get a guest on that can talk to me about the portal because I think the portal is making a big impact on development of young men I read Bruce Spelman's article I think it was The Athletic a couple days ago and it was talking about just one particular position of defensive linemen I'm not sure if you read that but he talked about how there's no defensive linemen I kind of thought that was maybe a little bit of an Alabama issue but the more I read that article or read that article and got to thinking about it you know he's he's dead on the money with some of these things that the portals it's having a big old impact on the development of young men and you know I hope Ty is that poster child or player that you can look at and say man if you just wait your turn if you just wait for that opportunity it will pay off and that's where we're at absolutely by the way Nate Oates salary improved from 6.2 million Ryan Fowler to 7.2 million that's not a bad raise to say the least you got to run and get ready for
