Now, your host, Harold Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Good afternoon and welcome in to the Boomo Bugg Show. I'm Harold Bugg alongside Brett Beaird. Thank you so much for giving us free ride around the Tennessee Valley. Brett Beaird, welcome in where Mr. DeBoer dropped tents on the A-Day format and the sports world truly loses a legend. Good afternoon, welcome in and how are you? Happy Thursday to you and the listeners. We'll talk about Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee basketball and football throughout the show. Steve Harrison will tell us about the latest clash to be inducted into the Lauderdale County Sports Hall of Fame. And BB is here right now to reminisce about a college football icon, Lou Holtz, who passed away yesterday at 89 years young. Bill Bender is the voice with the Sporting News. Bill, welcome in. How are you? Hey, I'm doing well. Thanks for having me on. You're good. Man, we appreciate you taking time out. Obviously, Bill, there are coaches who come along and then there are coaches who come along. Some people are great as far as their records on the field. But in some ways, Lou Holtz was bigger than that was. He was a personality. He was never afraid to speak his mind. You may agree. You may disagree. But as the song says back in the day, we won't back down. Your reflections on the one and only Lou Holtz. Well, you know, I'm a Catholic kid from central Ohio. So, you know, you grow up in a Catholic school. And when I was in grade school, Notre Dame was kind of at their peak under hold. You know, from 88 to 93, they were it. He was Nick Saban for that six-year stretch. You know, they were the big game in town. They won those top five games. They own that stage. Now, Harold, I think the younger generation knows Lou Holtz as the guy on ESPN arguing with Reece Davis and I. That's right. So, but I remember Lou Holtz as the just unbelievable family football, football coach. Everybody has an impersonation. None of them are perfect. But I think he was very self-aware of who he was and a very awesome football coach. And the thing is, you said you knew him from your backyard. A lot of folks in the SEC remember him from our backyard. He had stops in the SEC as well. Sometimes that gets overshadowed, does it not? It does. You know, whether it was Arkansas or, you know, his last act at South Carolina where he did a nice job there. They were pretty not a great football team before he got there. It took them to a couple of bowl games. And, you know, just an old school, grind it out guy. The story I've told a couple times in the last 48 hours was, or 24 hours, is I went to a fundraiser a couple years ago. One of those Catholic school fundraisers and trivia night or whatever. And Lou Holtz did a video message. And everybody, nobody was playing with their phones and nobody was eating. Everybody stopped what they were doing to listen to what Lou had to say. I mean, he's that revered within that community. And, you know, we'll miss him. Absolutely. I've seen about 15 stories. And particularly a funny one, when he was the graduation speaker at a college. Another good one yesterday was when his first job was William and Mary. And they played West Virginia. West Virginia and Bobby Bowden beat him like a drum. And he was complaining after the game to Bobby Bowden about the score. And Bobby Bowden said, well, you need more Williams than Mary's. As only Bobby Bowden could say it. And people forget about North Carolina State. Harold mentioned Arkansas and South Carolina. Several people mentioned yesterday that they talk about what he did to get Notre Dame back to the top. They said maybe his greatest reclamation project was at South Carolina. Yeah. I mean, those teams became competitive immediately. And, you know, like I said, I just, I can't get away from Notre Dame, though. It just, there's two games that stood out. You know, the Catholics' first convict game, I was probably nine years old. But the Florida State game in 93, nobody thought Notre Dame would win that football game. And, you know, they played Florida State with Charlie Ward and Bobby Bowden, Brett. I mean, that's full circle, right? Like, they beat that Bobby Bowden team. And yes, it's called a dream that started. I think it's one of the most significant football games of my lifetime. And I remember it and exactly what I was doing, who I was with, all those things. And then there was Lou Holtz right in the middle of it pulling off that upset. He was good at that. He was good at getting his team up when they were playing the other Goliath in town. I know it's hard to believe, Bill, but Brett and I were in grade school with you back in the day. So I know that's hard to believe, but let's switch gears. It's March Madness. Obviously, isn't it, speaking of that, hard to believe this is the last season of the regular season in college basketball. Your thoughts as far as heading in, it's pretty safe to say that Duke's in a good position, Arizona's in a good position, UConn. Who this weekend is going to come out of it in a good position to get that number one seed on Selection Sunday? I just think you have five teams fight for four spots right now. So it's probably a little bit fluid. You know, Duke and Michigan look pretty good. Arizona in the Big 12, you never know. And then UConn in Florida. Florida's been surging up. I give myself a small pat on the back because I've had them a little bit higher each week as we were going. I had them as a two last week. So they just continue to move up that board with the way that they're playing under, you know, Coach Golden. So keep an eye on the Gators. But, you know, it's a deal worth five for four spots, and all five of them are number one seed worthy to me. Right now I have UConn ahead of Florida, but that could easily change. Yeah, absolutely. Alabama got into a trap game in Athens, Georgia. Catchings, a kid for Georgia who'd been averaging 10 points, went off for 32, and that helped, I think, an emotionally drained Alabama team. You've got them on the three line right now. I'm guessing they're going to probably stay on the four. But if they beat Auburn and win a couple of games in the SEC tournament, we'll see three or four for Alabama when everything's said and done. Playing really well at the right time, scoring a lot of points at the right time. Going to be a tough tournament out for whoever they play because of that ability to get up and down and score at the rate that they do. You know, so they're the other team. Florida and Alabama have been trending upward for about three weeks on those brackets, and I think, look for that. They have to continue if they continue to do what they're doing this weekend and in to the SEC tournament, which is, you know what, I'm not saying it because I'm just on your station, but SEC tournament has the most intrigue to me because I think if I could pick one day, that quarterfinal and second round of the year, that's going to be live because there's some teams on the bubble there, too. Not only that, Bill. I mean, Nashville is just a special place. It would be hard to get an argument because you go to some of these other cities and they're so big. Nashville is not a small place, but it still has a town feel to it as opposed to an Atlanta or Tampa, some of these other places, and I think that adds to it, too. You know our zip code here, Bill. By the way, Bill, been to the national voice for the Sporting News. People ask a question about Auburn. To me, the answer is very simple. If they start winning from now on, then they're in good shape, but the question is, Bill, what happens if they, we know what happens if they lose, what happens if they split, say, this weekend and in the SEC tournament? Do they be able to sneak in under the bubble? Maybe. You know, and it didn't help that Bruce Pearl had to compare them to Indiana, rather, not Indiana, Miami, rather the message came across or not. Now, the Red Hawks should be in the tournament even if they lose on Friday. I'm going to be clear about that. I know the Mac, you can say what you want about their strength to schedule at 29-0. You know, come on. Auburn's a good team and has a better strength to schedule. Nobody's doubting that, but at a certain point, you've got to win a couple games. So, I anticipate they'll be right on the bubble as we get into the last weekend, and they can play themselves off of it. But, you know, I do respect the number of quad one opponents that they've played and beat, but, you know, come on. Are we going to take them over a 29-1 or 30-2 Miami? I hope you guys are on my side on this one. Yes. Bill, it's ridiculous to sit there and say a 29-0 or a 30-0 Miami of Ohio does not deserve to get in, and Auburn does. Come on. And I know Bruce wants his son to get in there, but Miami of Ohio deserves to be in the tournament. You've got Michigan State is all-making his normal late-season run. They've got a four-game winning streak, and it's still – we laughed about this earlier this week. It's still amazing for me to look on your two-line and see Nebraska. 25-4, 14-4, they're 12-4 in quad one and two. As we've laughed about it, if they played Alabama in the NCAA tournament, it'd be 125-123. But it is amazing to see Nebraska as either a two- or three-seed. Yeah, I wouldn't want to keep booked for that game. You'd just – you'd be right – you'd have your head down right in the whole time. They play well. They play good team ball. What you mentioned is, though, you never leave them. You just learn. Like, it's almost like a learned behavior up here in Ohio where we just know Izzo's going to have them going by the time the tournament rolls around. Jeremy Pierce is pretty good. So, yeah, those teams are exciting. That's exciting. Michigan, Michigan State this weekend ought to be good. Michigan clinched the Big Ten, obviously. But that's one of them rivalry games that I think is pretty nasty. And Michigan's going to have to prove it a little bit this week. Lost LJ Kaysom for the season last week to an ACL injury. So, you know, we'll see how that impacts them. You may say it's a backup point guard. Who cares? But he's a big part of their offense. Must be 2026. Indiana's good in football and Michigan's good in basketball. Where do we go wrong? Bill Bender, how significant will tomorrow be or will it just be another blip on the radar? The power four conference commissioners are expected to huddle in the White House with a fellow by the name of President Donald Trump. Among them, that'll be Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Mack Brown, about the future of college athletics. Will anything come out of that other than an expensive catering bill? Well, you know, it depends on more. Is this serious? Are they going to get down to it? Or is it like a photo op for social media? You know, I mean, you just mentioned Mack and Nick and Urban. Those are probably the three voices in college football, to me, among coaches that you would pick to listen to the most. You know, but so we'll see. You know, very interested to see what comes of that, what changes they recommend, what they like about the sport. So I think we still like the games on the field and on the court. Just all this other stuff we have to write about that, to me personally, gets pretty exhausting. Yeah, yeah, I could see why you would say that. Last week, weekend of the regular season, my friend, and with all the conference tournaments next week, I know you and your buddies have got it covered. What else are you working on this week, and where can we get online and read the good stuff? Yeah, I'm at BillBender92 at sportingnews.com. We've got, I might not have a lot of stuff. You know, there's a tribute to Lou Holtz that we wrote yesterday and a couple other things that are coming. But yeah, it'll be March Madness for the next 10 days or so. I'm super excited about it. But yeah, keep an eye on that crimson tide, man. They just keep moving up. And hopefully the temperature is moving up there in the backyard of Ohio. Listen, Bill, thanks so much for your time, Dan. Have a great rest of the week and weekend, all right? Hey, no problem. Thanks for having me on, guys. Thank you, Bill. The man with the sporting news, Bill Bender. We had North Young Man in the Bluegrass State of Kentucky, and say hello to Larry Vaught. He's busy there with Vaught's views. Get this. Column writer, 30 papers on his website. There behind the microphone at WPBK. UK Sports Minute on radio stations for Edge Media Throughout on WLAP. And feature writer for Topps Magazine. Larry, you're a busy boy. How are you? I'm doing fine. My mind's been blown, kind of blown here in the last few minutes a little bit, but having some conversations with some folks. We actually have the, depending on which recruiting service you look at, the number one ranked tight end in the junior class in the nation lives here where I do. And I've just been hearing some of the numbers that might be involved with his contract offer. He may own Danville in two years. My goodness gracious, Larry. It's funny. I can't even understand. I'm serious. How long have we been doing this? And did you ever think when you started out, all of us as young kids in this crazy business, that we'd ever be having this conversation? No. I mean, it's just an insane thing. I mean, I don't begrudge any athlete for getting that kind of money. Because if I could get it, you know, we would have all done the same. But it's just changed things so much. And I just don't see how fans can keep going. I mean, if it had been 35 years going, I don't take my kids to games and stuff. And the prices were like this. I wouldn't have done it. I couldn't have done it. And the prices are just going to keep escalating. And I don't know when it's ever, I don't guess it's ever going to stop. So, but it just makes it hard. And then if you've got maybe a basketball team that you're pretty sure has got over a $20 million payroll, and they can't play because they get tired. You know, they're having to play on Saturday, and they're making them play again on the d*** Tuesday. And how can those guys be expected to do that for what they make? I mean, 72 hours rest and go play? I mean, the way the SEC has treated Kentucky this year has been unbelievable. Oh, wait a minute. I think they've done that to everybody, though, hasn't they? I'm calling my senator. I'm putting a stop to this. I want my trophy, Larry. But you bring up a point. What's that going to do? Let's face it. At some point, we're crazy about college sports. We all are. We admit that. And we're going to sit here, and we're going to chop our gums, and we're going to sit here and fuss and fight. We're going to still watch. We all know that. But at what point, we're going to say, as you mentioned, enough's enough because tickets are going to go up. We get that. Concession's going to go up. We get that. Parking's going to go up. And not only that, they're expanding the playoffs. So my team plays here, then they go to California, then they go to Boston. In other words, they're like a rubber ball bouncing all over the country, three or four stops in the postseason. At what point do we say, you know what? It was good while it lasted, but enough's enough. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, that's why I've become such a fan, like volleyball and gymnastics and stuff like that. You still have athletes who are competing. You know, they've got scholarships, and maybe they get a little something, but most of the time they don't get anything. I don't quite understand if you're going to do it in this day and age, why you can't take, if you're giving the football team $37 million, why can't you give each of those athletes maybe $2,000 or something like that and make an old guy like me think, well, maybe there is still some fairness involved. But, I mean, and I think the next trend is going to be, I think you're going to see a lot of high school junior football players pretty soon try to make sure they have those credits, and they're not going to enroll in school in December. They're just going to skip their senior season of high school football so they can get on campus and start making that money. It's already done here in Alabama. It's already done. Ryan Williams is a face. He's a face for that. Okay, we'll see that. I think, I mean, just like this young man I was talking about here in our town, for the number of zeros that are being thrown around to get him, I don't know why he'd want to stay for his high school senior season. I mean, he could fly back home for his prom, I'm pretty sure, with the money he's going to have. On his plane. Yeah, on his plane. So, I don't know. It's just a tough thing to watch. I'm fortunate I've got a Division III school, Center College, here in Danville, so I go watch a lot of their games because it's just, I hate to say it's more fun, but it really is just kind of more fun right now. Larry, Mitch Barnhart, the longest tenure Power Four athletic director, announcing this week he will retire in June. Hire John Calipari, Mark Stoops, among the many things that he's done in nearly a quarter of a century. He's seen quite a few changes himself. Larry, what's Barnhart's legacy at Kentucky? That he wrote himself a million-dollar-a-year job when he retired. Wow. Speaking of money. Yeah, that's exactly right. Thanks for your contribution, Larry. And I don't mean that to be really harsh on him, but I think right now in this state, most people are thinking you're going to retire and you wrote the contract for yourself in such a way that you're going to get a million dollars a year to do something. And they've created some title like director of physical activity for the janitors or something like that. And he gets to keep his country club membership and he gets free tickets. I mean, come on now. And then you're going to go out and ask fans to get more money to kind of go along with what we were saying. I mean, before that, I think his legacy would have been that, yes, he did elevate the Olympic sports at Kentucky. The academics, he's done a good job with student-athletes, making really pretty significant gains in their academic marks. You know, anymore, I don't know who goes to class. I don't know how you know who, how they make their grades anymore. Why? And I don't quite get that. He had some really good hires. He had a couple of hires not so good. But it's kind of an interesting time for him to be leaving because his football team's coming off four and eight and five and seven seasons. His basketball team got to the Sweet 16 last year, which was fine. But this year, I mean, it's just been a disaster up here. There's been a few really good wins, but there's just been way too many miserable nights and all. And so his legacy is kind of hard to determine. But the biggest thing in this state right now is the conversation, not about he did this or did that. It's just how did he swing it where he's going to get almost a million dollars a year for not working. Wow. Wow. Unbelievable. Well, Larry, the Cats have lost four out of their last six games. As you noted, Owe, Ortega Owe, I believe, has come on. Mohamed Diabadi, the transfer from Alabama, Kentucky led Texas A&M 30-18 with eight minutes left to go in the first half. And that was the highlight. Texas A&M kind of took over from there. You mean you consider a 27-2 run kind of taking over? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, think about that. I guess it's a 27-3 at the half. But I mean, how can you go at eight minutes? You go from 12 points up to 14. I think it was 14 points behind. And then Texas A&M has another little run to start the second half. So the run ends up being 36-3 over a team that's got over a $20 million payroll, supposed to be a top, supposed to have been a contender for national honors this year. And I mean, it's just unbelievable how this team, when they collapse, they could just collapse. And Mark Pope just kind of sits there for a guy that's supposed to be really smart, like he doesn't know what the world's going on. And then he comes on after the game and talks again about fatigue. He's got a short bench. These guys are tired. And nine or ten players. What team in the league has got more than nine or ten players? And how much? I mean, I just don't get it. I just don't know how you can be so tired at four minutes. I mean, I just don't get it. And I mean, they get those long TV timeouts, and they're supposed to be young enough. I don't know. And he's the guy that said he'd never make excuses when he got to Kentucky. And I believe that's how he was as a player. He never made excuses, but he's full of excuses right now. They're not going over very well in this area. And there's not a lot of real big expectations. He's got to play Florida Saturday, and then you go to the SEC tournament, where Kentucky's last three games in Nashville, they've lost by a combined 89 points. If they're tired at this age, wait till they get to this milestone. I'm going to play my guys. You know, I'm sitting there thinking, guys like us have to work every day. And nobody says, oh, you need a little math. Oh, for about 50 years. Yeah. I mean, I go out and cover these guys playing. I don't anymore, but for you, Steve, for you, go out and come back, write a story, get to bed at 2 a.m., have to be back up in the office at 6 a.m. And nobody says, Larry, are you a little tired? You have a long night? No. Get your butt on in here and work. Shut your freaking mouth and get busy. Yeah. And if you don't, we'll go get somebody else. There you go. If they do run out of gas, what's it going to be like in the offseason for the Pope? Well, it's going to need to be a really busy offseason because he didn't have a single high school player signed or committed, and none that seemed to be looking that way. He's up this week after they got beat by Texas A&M. He was up watching a G League player or two play, which, again, is another thing. I just drive folks in this state, I think, insane if he suddenly brings in players from the G League. That's his recruiting mantra. I don't know how many players on this team now will come back next year. I would think several would, but there also may be some surprising ones that won't come back. They might just decide they're going to go somewhere else because when you lose to Kentucky, it's not a really pleasant place to play. We can relate down here with football. Yeah, I was going to say, you know well what I'm talking about. Well, listen, Larry, there is gymnastics and there is volleyball, which you remind me every time we get in contact as far as the flagship of the program. Larry, where can we get online and get all your great stuff, my friend? Well, you can get on my website at either yoursportsedge.com or vaultsfuse.com, and you can follow me on Twitter at vaultsfuse.com. I want to see what those kids are doing at vaultsfuse. Now we've got that. I want to see where those kids are after midnight on the bar scene in Lexington, see if they're too tired to go to the bars after midnight up there, Larry. Can you do a story on that? Yeah, and think about this, what the SEC's done to this women's basketball team. They had to play yesterday at 11, turn around and play again today at 11. Now they've got to play again tomorrow at 11. Well, with Mark Pope's philosophy, they can't even get to the gym by 11 tomorrow. You know what the girl's going to tell them? Shut up, boy. Maybe even a little bit more forceful than that. Yeah, there you go. I guarantee you. Larry, listen, man, always good to catch it with you. Thanks so much, and let's do it again soon, okay? All right, thanks for having me. Thank you, buddy. Larry Vaught, the master of vaultsfuse. Coming up, what's going on in UT country? I wonder if Ryan Callahan's tired. We'll see you next. I'm good. It's safe to say, Ryan, every ACC basketball team that needs a shot in the arm needs to play South Carolina. That often can help. They're not having the best year, and that ended up being a good matchup for Tennessee to take care of business and get through a night without Nate Amon. So, you know, we'll see how they do going forward and what his status is. But, yeah, obviously for one night they were able to kind of get on track there and survive having their best player not out on the floor, which obviously cost them against Alabama last weekend. We want to talk more about that key injury going forward. But in the meantime, teams who have got potential but has had a bumpy ride, games like that, we joke about it, but South Carolina fans are not joking about it, of course. But if you're another team that's still got some potential in there, those games are important because it can help you get back your confidence, not to mention that much-needed win. Yeah, no question. You're referring to the South Carolina game? Yes. Yeah, yeah. So definitely a game like that. I think, you know, just especially at the time of year it is, you know, you've got another big game coming up against Vanderbilt on Saturday. You've got the SEC tournament just around the corner. You know, it's a good time of year to, you know, kind of get some good vibes, just have a little shot in the arm there and feel like things are working well, especially coming off a tough loss to Alabama on Saturday, a game they led by a fairly comfortable margin at one point there and let slip away in the second half. So for that to get them back with some good vibes and especially show them that they can win without Nate Amon if needed, I think was a good step for them. And a game like that can be helpful for sure, especially to go on the road and take care of business that way. Tennessee trying to be one of the four teams to get a double bye and begin play on Friday. They've got a tough task. Vandy's been a tough customer for a lot of people, got off to an incredible start. And again, like a lot of teams do, but mid-conference, they begin to hit a little bit of a wall in losing. Number one, if Tennessee beats Vandy, would they be the number three seed in the SEC and get a double bye? And what have you heard about Amon's status as far as the Vandy game? Yeah, I don't know that they're locked into the three seed if they win that. That might depend on other factors. But I think they will get the double bye if they beat Vanderbilt. So that's obviously a big deal and something they could really use to help them in the SEC tournament. And, you know, they still could use a quality win or two here down the stretch. They've already beaten Vanderbilt on the road, but another win there would help. And then obviously anything they can do in the SEC tournament to strengthen their case would certainly give them a better chance of climbing. They've been kind of in a lot of five-seed projections lately. Would like to get into that four-seed if they can. You want to avoid some of those 5-12 matchups that they've been in some recent projections with Miami of Ohio as the number 12 seed facing them. I think that's a 12 seed a lot of people would like to avoid given their record even if they don't have a lot of quality wins. So, yeah, we'll see about that. But they certainly could use, you know, just strengthening their resume a little bit more here down the stretch and another win Saturday would help in that regard. Yeah, Amon's injury, you know, it doesn't sound like there's – it's concerning enough because Rick Barnes is throwing around the dreaded term of high ankle sprain and we've seen those in multiple sports and that can be a several-week thing before someone's back to normal. So, obviously, basketball, that's a really tough one with all the change of direction and everything and he's a really athletic guy. So, that's a tough one to play through. At the same time, he's made it clear he expects Nate Amon to play again this season so he doesn't think it's the type of thing that's going to keep him out for a few more weeks. But at the same time, can we expect him back Saturday? You know, that seems a bit optimistic if that's the description of the injury. So, I think they'll take it easy with him. He might even just plan to sit him out the SEC tournament if it's any kind of – if his status is in question at all at that point. Just knowing that you're in the tournament, you're not – your season's not on the line next week. Just get him ready for the NCAA tournament when things are really at stake and maybe even, you know, see how much you have to play him in the first round. You know, you might – if you can get into a 4-13 game or a 5-12 where you can take care of business, then maybe you don't even, you know, push the issue there and save him for when it really matters. So, that's a tricky injury. Obviously, if that's the description of the injury we got, then I think that tells you it's pretty serious and they're going to have to do what they can to get him as much rest as possible to get him ready for March Madness. Ryan Kelly and go balls 24-7. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Ryan, Tennessee women taking on the Alabama women tonight in the SEC tournament there in South Carolina. Your thoughts about what Alabama's going to be facing with the Lady Vols. Well, a team that's licking its wounds, to say the least. They've not been at their best here lately and have had a lot of SEC losses more than they're used to. So, it's a tough spot to be in. But I think they're in position to play better than they have been. But they're in a tough spot knowing that they've not been at their best year down the stretch and feel like they're going to have a tough time getting back on track here with as long as it's been since they've won consistently in SEC plays. So, yeah, I don't know. I don't know what to expect on that one. But it feels like a type of matchup they could win this game. There's no reason to think they can't. But they need some good vibes. Kind of like what we were talking about with the men's team. They could use a win to feel better about themselves because it's not been what they would expect down the stretch and they're not used to losing this many consecutive SEC games. Listen, you've heard this for probably half the season. I know Rick Barnes has. Two games against Kentucky when Tennessee had big leads, 13-17, and Kentucky comes back to win. They lead Alabama by 12 or 14. Alabama comes back to win. I think this has happened four or five times, Ryan. And, again, in this league it just simply happens. But when it's three, four, or five times, and I'm sure Rick Barnes has been over some of this, your thoughts on losing the double-digit leads. Yeah, that's not – I don't know what to make of that because the Kentucky part is interesting. You know, they're a team that's sort of done that to a lot of teams this year. And then you can point to the aim at injury as the explanation for the Alabama loss. So is that a sign that, you know, that the next time Tennessee's in that situation and a team starts to come back, they're going to start seeing – start thinking back to what happened before and say, here we go again? Or is that a sign that those just were sort of fluky situations and there happened to be three of them because you faced the same team twice that has proved to be really good at coming back against teams and starting slow in a lot of those games like Kentucky has. So it's hard to say. I think they're in a better position than the people think probably the next time they get in one of those positions, but you don't want to have that track record regardless. So I don't think it's something this team should be worried about, but it is something that you're going to think about every time you're in that situation and a team starts to come back. I just think Kentucky is a unique team. And then Alabama, that was obviously a weird game where Ament just not being out there I think was a big deal for that team that's relied on him so much down the stretch in a lot of games. Ryan, we know you've got to jump off here, but your thoughts about where things are right now at this point in the season without Tony V calling the shots for Tennessee baseball? Yeah, off to a bit of a weird start. They lost a non-conference series, but they're not used to having that problem. So I think they played pretty well for the most part this past weekend in Texas in a tournament with a pretty tough field. So they've got some good experience against better competition under their belts. Off to an okay start, I would say, but not just blowing the doors off people right now. And that's caused enough concerns so far that people think Tony Vitello might have been the straw that stirred the drink a little bit, but it might be tough to continue things without him at that high of a level at least. So we'll see. I think it's still too early to make many proclamations there, but they're a talented team and there's reason to think they're going to get better as the season goes along. So I think some of the things they showed this past weekend, good signs. They put up some good offensive numbers against a couple of those teams they faced. So there's still some reasons to worry or reasons to think they've got some growing to do. But overall, I think okay so far and still looks like a team that should be in the top half of the SEC somewhere, but obviously it's a really tough league and they've got to continue to get better. We're going to let you go. Florida started spring football practice this week. Alabama began Sunday. When does Tennessee begin spring football practice, number one? And number two, where can we get online to get yours and the team's good stuff? Yeah, Tennessee's first practice, they go on spring break next week and as soon as they get back from spring break, they will start that, I believe that following Monday will be their first practice, but I know they have a practice scheduled for Tuesday as well. They kind of have to go four times a week most weeks to squeeze things into a four-week schedule waiting until after spring break. So they'll be starting here pretty soon and yeah, for now, the thing's kind of focused on getting ready for that and once they come back from spring break, it'll be go time. But yeah, lots of coverage of that as we get ready for the start of spring practice, basketball, baseball, obviously in full swing, lots going on, recruiting, heating up with the dead period now over. So lots to check out at GoVolt247.com. Folks from Nashville, Vanderbilt come to Knoxville this weekend and the next weekend, the folks in Knoxville go to Nashville for the SEC tourney. Got the Auburn Tigers covered there at auburnsports.com. Caleb, welcome in. Happy Thursday to you. How are you? Well, it's finally March, so that's a great thing. Yes. And I would imagine, and since it is March, it's a great thing that the Auburn Tigers beat the LSU Tigers to keep the pulse alive for March Madness. Would you agree, Caleb? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, if Auburn has any chance of making the NCAA tournament, it had to beat LSU on Tuesday night. That was a late one. But, yeah, it had to beat LSU. It's got an opportunity to go into Tuscaloosa and come out with a really solid win over a ranked Alabama team, which I think if Auburn wins at Alabama on Saturday, I think that does kind of secure them a spot potentially for maybe not having to play in the first four. But, I mean, it depends on kind of how the game goes, of course. Steven Pearl has called out his team for playing with, quote, a low basketball IQ, and several of the evaluations of LSU win had indicated that they actually followed the game plan and they did what they were supposed to do. I'm not trying to be facetious here. This is a very talented team, but you don't know which one you're going to get from night to night. Where is Auburn's head? I know this is a simplistic question, but where's Auburn's mindset going to Tuscaloosa? I think just watching the LSU game, I think there were a lot of good signs from Auburn just in the way that they played, right? It seemed like everybody was playing kind of on the same page. They played together. They followed the game plan, kind of like you said. And granted, LSU is not one of the top teams or middle of the pack even in the SEC, but the performance that Auburn had, it was kind of the performance that a team like Auburn that's fighting for a chance to play in the NCAA tournament, that's how they needed to play, and they executed kind of in the way that they needed to. So, I mean, I think going into the Alabama game, I think Auburn's head is where it needs to be, which is they know that they've got a huge opportunity going up against not only just like a big rival, that a win would mean a lot to the fans, especially seeing that Alabama came into Neville Arena earlier this year and beat Auburn. And, I mean, it's now or never. This is a chance if you're Auburn. You have to understand that a win here could potentially just kind of put you in the tournament. Caleb Jones, obviously, it's the old, every kind of coach I think likes this. It's the us versus the world. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain. You know they're going to have that pregame locker room. They're going to be rocking and rolling, trying to peel the paint off. But, Caleb, obviously, it's easy to get up right before a game. Sometimes in this modern era, we were talking to some of our friends from Kentucky, Mr. Basketball Heaven, at least at one time. And it seems like there's, in this modern era, there's almost like, well, I'm tired. I don't like being pushed. I don't like a coach telling me what to do. I'm not saying that's the case here, but that seems to be, if you listen to a lot of folks, in some cases, that seems to be the mindset. We do know there has been no secret. This team has not always been on the same page when it comes to discipline. As far as what Steven Pearl has learned from that standpoint, what lessons would he take away from this year? Just, you can have four and five stars. That's great. But you still got to play as a we, not a me. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, there have been some issues with some guys, you know, maybe not showing up to practice or showing up to film on time. Those have been addressed. There's a couple of, you know, mistakes have been made. And Steven Pearl has a standard for his program and how he wants his guys to operate and kind of approach not just playing the game of basketball and what it means to be a basketball player at Auburn, but just in general, the way that they have to approach the team aspect of it, right? Right. Like you said, it's not a me, it is a we thing. And so this team kind of going into this final game against Alabama, even though this team hasn't really, this team hasn't played together for more than just this season, right? You've got a lot of new faces around. This team still has some guys that have seen the NCAA tournament, guys like Kevin Overton, who I think is going to have to be a leader kind of heading into this final game to Hot Pettiford going to have to step up and just kind of vocalize. You know, Keyshawn Murphy has never won an NCAA tournament game. So this is a time where these guys have to step up and realize, hey, this may be the last shot for guys like Murph, guys like Keyshawn, Keyshawn Hall, who they have an opportunity here to step up for those guys, step up for their teammates. And it's going to take a tremendous amount of detail, excuse me, a tremendous amount of attention to detail because you're playing a really talented Alabama team who is probably going to be fired up coming off of a loss to, who did Alabama lose to? They lost at Georgia, which was the perfect storm for Georgia. They were trying to stay alive too, like Auburn for the NCAA tournament. And it was at home. Yeah, so, I mean, Alabama's going to be coming into this game fired up because they're not going to be happy coming off that loss to Georgia. So, it's going to be a great game. It's a great way to kind of end the regular season, get two bitter rivals, one fighting for an NCAA tournament spot, and the other just looking for a season sweep. Caleb, this goes back to the, in fact, we've talked with you about this, I believe, a couple of times. And until Auburn had the two or three losses to the bottom tier of the SEC, again, they've got what may be one of the most impressive wins the entire season, beating Florida in Gainesville before the Gators took off again. St. John's, they lost by one point Houston. They also beat North Carolina State, who's had a good year in the ACC. But again, people have been saying the last two weeks when you lose to Oklahoma, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss and snap their 10-game losing streak, the bad losses just outweighed the good wins. Well, I mean, Stephen Pearl had a tall task of facing one of the toughest, if not the toughest, schedules in the country, both in a non-conference, and then you get into SEC play and you've got some really good teams there. But yeah, I mean, Auburn's got some solid wins, kind of like you mentioned. It's a win over Florida, and it's not just a fluke win over Florida. It's a win over Florida. It's a win over St. John's, NC State, kind of like you said. They've hung in there with teams like Houston. So, I mean, if there's anything to kind of be taken away from those wins, is that this Auburn team, when they do play together, when they are able to execute, they kind of hang in there and they can compete. But kind of going back to what you were kind of ending on there, they do have some bad losses, some losses where I think maybe they go into the game kind of knowing they are the better team. I think Auburn kind of overlooked, maybe not overlooked, it's not the right word, but I think Auburn kind of went into the Ole Miss game almost expecting just to win. It would almost be a little easier than it was. And I think they kind of learned their lesson after the Ole Miss game because if you go into the LSU game with that same mentality of, well, hey, the LSU's not that good, you know, as a team, like, you know, if you're Auburn, you're thinking, okay, well, we're a better team than LSU is or we're a better team than Ole Miss is, if you go into the LSU game with that mentality, you lose to LSU. And so I think my biggest takeaway from watching Auburn play at LSU is they played with a purpose. They played like, hey, not every game is going to be given. You've got to go out there and you've got to earn it and Auburn earned a win against LSU. Your thoughts about a story that is obviously it's a fun topic. Obviously, Bruce going to bat for his son and Papa Wood. Basically, if you haven't followed the story saying that, look at, as we just got done talking about, look at the balance and the whole work of Auburn's season as opposed to a team like Miami of Ohio, which is not a brand team. Yeah, they got a much better record, but that's Miami of Ohio. This is Auburn and the SEC. He's saying basically all things are relative. Your take on Bruce stomping for his son over what? At last report, an unbeaten team from Miami of Ohio. I mean, yeah, I mean, Bruce is going to go to bat for his son because, I mean, it's as simple as that. Like, any father would talk about his son and, you know, Steven's got his team in a position to where they've won some games. You know, they've put a resume together and it's going to be up to the committee to decide if that resume is in fact what they view as, I guess, acceptable for the NCAA tournament. So, I mean, but you also got to kind of keep in mind, like, this is Steven Pearl's first season as a head coach. There's going to be a lot of things that he's going to have to take away and have to learn and apply for next year and you'll kind of see what direction the program heads in in year two. but there's definitely been some things, I think, some lessons that Steven Pearl has learned and, of course, he's got a great outlet in Bruce Pearl to kind of work through some, maybe some issues that have kind of come up. But, yeah, I mean, it's no surprise to see Bruce kind of step in and obviously support his son. He's been very supportive of Steven and everything that he's been and everything that he's done. Okay, a little spring football practice just around the corner. In fact, Florida began this week. Alabama begins Sunday. What are some of the questions you have? And I know you and Brian Matthews and the crew have discussed these in the last month ever since, and particularly the transfer portal. The line of scrimmage, the offensive line, even though there are 17 or 18 new guys there, well, they're about 14 or 15. The questions at line of scrimmage, the defensive line, Dallas Walker's back, Cody Sigler, Walter Mathis on that defensive line. The secondary, Pleasant, is an all-NCC player, Andre Jordan, Shamar Arnaud there along with Blake Woody, Jenkins, et cetera. What are some of your top questions going into spring football practice for Auburn? Yeah, I think the offensive line is a big question as to kind of who's going to take the role and take the reins and kind of lead the reps there at all five positions there. I think there's going to be a battle at cornerback. They've got the rooms kind of open. Like you said, they've got Rayshon Pleasant. They've got UCLA transfer Andre Jordan Jr., Florida State transfer Shamar Arnaud, and then, of course, you've got the young guy and Blake Woodby. So there's going to be battles there. Another thing that I'm interested to kind of see is I love kind of looking at the demeanor of kind of how practices are run. I want to see how active Alex Golesh is and kind of the attitude that he takes toward practice. How is he actively coaching? Kind of what is his style? Because every head coach has their own style, and so I'm interested to see that. I think one thing that really stuck out to me in his opening press conference was he talks about Golesh does. He talks about this program. He wants it to be player-led. Auburn Football put out a video on Twitter like a week or so ago of some of the winter workouts going on. You can really kind of tell early on that the players are buying into it being a player-led program. And so I want to see that. I want to see how Golesh encourages his players and kind of see who steps into a leadership role of who's chasing that extra rep because I think you're going to be able to learn a little bit about this team and kind of how it operates within the first several weeks of spring practice. That's a good point. Auburn baseball doing well. They took two out of three from Nebraska last weekend. The McCrane boys are just hitting the cover off of the baseball and we're getting SEC play again later this month. I always enjoy the conversation with you, be it football, basketball, recruiting, or the transfer portal. Where can we get online and get yours and the team's good stuff? Like you said, we're going to have our basketball coverage continuing for men's basketball. Women's basketball had a big win yesterday in the opening round of the SEC tournament. Quickly, baby, some breaking news. Obviously, Alabama didn't play basketball again until, what, this weekend, the Iron Bowl with the Auburn Tigers, but it looks like Nate Oates is already landing a big win today on the recruiting trail. Yeah, we're talking about this with Ryan Fowler in a little more detail at the bottom of the hour, but Jackson Richardson is considered to be the number 27 overall prospect in the country according to rivals. Six foot six, very impressive kid. Dad played in the NBA brother, just got there, so we'll talk a little bit more about Nate Oates, prize recruit in a few minutes. A lot of prize folks over the years when it comes to playing sports in Lauderdale County, and nobody knows that better than Steve Harrison, former president of Lauderdale County Sports Hall of Fame. Steve, welcome in. How are you? You two old coots doing? Well, we'd like to see if the fish are biting. We know the answer, though. We know the crappie is not biting, or as they say, a North Carolina crappie. I'm still scared to say that word. So we know the crappie are, do you prefer crappie, Steve? They're not biting today because we know you're on with us, right? Yeah, you messed up my fishing today, but I'm going tomorrow and make up for it. I'm sorry, man. Well, we'll take a trip around the room and take our punishment like two old coots there, Steve. Let's talk to us about this class here, man. It's very impressive. Where do we start in breaking down the latest famed names to the Lauderdale Sports Hall of Fame? Well, a girl that stands out, Brittany Godsey from Lauderdale County High School, they've won 14 state championships up there. She is the first ninth grader to start at Lauderdale County. I think that says a lot. She made all state all four years. That team went 128 and 12 while she was playing point guard, won two state championships, a runner-up, but she was equally as good in softball. She was all state in softball, averaged 12 strikeouts a game. She was also on the tennis team in singles and doubles and was a state champion in that. She was a whale of an athlete. That's what amazes me about these guys. We talk about Garrett Reed, Ed Dessler. Steve, she had four or five sports. It's just absolutely incredible. Derek Chapman is from coffee is another one who is going into the Lauderdale County Sports Hall of Fame. Steve, tell us about Derek. Derek was the last collegiate athlete from coffee because they closed coffee his senior year and combined with Bradshaw for Florence. Here's a guy that his story is he wouldn't quit. Nobody offered him. He walked on at UNA. There were 40 or 50 freshmen. By the spring the next year, he was the only returning defensive starter. He played as a freshman, played as a sophomore, hurt his junior year, came on and played his senior year and wound up with 75 tackles and six sacks in his career. But this is a smart kid as well. If you want somebody that's athletic but academic, he made first team all GSC on the academic team and he also made the super region team as a player. He's a guy that if you wonder why he was a good player, he had Reggie White, a poster of him on his bedroom wall. If you got Reggie White as your hero, your motor's running all the time. Steve Harrison in the huddle with us. Let's talk about a pirate and a warrior Austin Kerr from Rogers, Phyllis Lovelies from Wilson. Yeah, I want to thank Dan Beavers for getting us his way. He coached him. This kid led Rogers to the semifinals. I want you to listen to his three-year totals. And this is rushing, receiving, passing yards, return yardage, 8,432 yards and 91 touchdowns in his career. But he was equally adept on the defensive side of the ball. He had 198 tackles, 14 interceptions in his career. So I knew he was a good player. I remember reading about him, but when we got his stats, I was just dumbfounded by what he had done. Jerry Knight, Shell's area sports caster of the year, the voice of the UNA Lions, the voice of coffee, yellow jackets for 25 years, well-deserved, but multi-talented. Steve, tell us a little bit more about Jerry. Well, y'all probably know this. His name was not Jerry Knight. His name was Jerry Grissom, and he worked at the radio station when he was in high school, and they had a guy named Jerry work the day shift, and then Jerry Knight worked the night shift. So they had to distinguish it was Jerry day and Jerry night, and I never did ask Jerry, but I assume he put a K in front of it so it wouldn't be N-I-G-H-T. And here's a guy that 25 years coffee, football, UNA, voice of the Lions there, emceed the Harlan Hill Banquet. I'll tell you a funny story about him. Of course, I knew Jerry, and he had 10 years previously, he had quit being in the press box at UNA. And so this is about 2005. I've been announcing games in the press box for 25 years, and I saw a local insurance guy, Jim Holland, walking down the hall, and I said, Jim, you look like you're lost. Who are you looking for? He said, Jerry Knight. I said, well, Jerry, it was in the 90s he was here. He said, no, he's here. I said, well, he's not up here. He said, well, I listen to him every Saturday. I said, you talking about over the PA? He said, yeah. I said, that's me. He said, it is not. I said, Jim, I promise you, Jerry's not up here, and I promise you that's me. So Jerry and I got quite a kick out of that podcast. We're going to nominate you to be in the Hall of Fame. Okay, Steve? He's there. He's there already. We're going to put you in there twice. Let's talk about a place that you're very familiar with, the pride of Brooks, Jimmy Parker. Yeah, Jimmy Parker was a wonderful pitcher. We played Thomasville, Brooks did, in the late 80s for the state championship. Jimmy pitched the first game and won it. We just happened to meet a guy named Reed Cornelius in the second game who mowed us down, not only in that game, but the next one and we finished the runner up. Here's what's neat about Jimmy. Jimmy's dad used to get out in the yard with him and he preached control, control, control, and Jimmy was a control pitcher, but his fastball was only about 85 miles per hour. That doesn't get the job done a lot of times. He won 35, 35 and nine at Brooks. He won 16 games at Calhoun and then he went to Troy and Chase Riddle, the coach there, said, all right, you've got to have another pitch and the pitch you've got to have is a change-up. So here's what we're going to do. I'm going to start you at 20 feet and when you can throw 10 consecutive change-ups, you'll move to 30 feet. They did that at 20, 30, 40, 50, and at 60 feet 6 inches, which is the distance to home plate, Jimmy finally threw 10 consecutive change-ups. Do you know how long that took fellas? 6 months. How many people have the patience to 6 months? Changed his life, the change-up, and put him at Alabama for his senior year. I think that's just the kid that's coachable. Great story. Absolutely. Ricky Bryan was an athlete, a coach, a referee, an umpire, a sports committee member, and a 1976 graduate. By the way, I can say that was a great year to graduate from Lansing High School. You talk about a multi-talented individual, Steve, Ricky was. My introductory remarks on him are going to be that I don't know that anybody has worn many hats, and you covered that very well, B.B. He coached his first coaching job was at Loretta, and he coached David Weathers, who spent 14 years in the major leagues. He goes to Hazelwood, coaches Pierre Gude. I'm sure at that point he thought this was easy. Yes, he had great success, but 40 years as an umpire. He's called eight state championship football games. He's called the finals of Babe Ruth. He told me a funny story. I asked him, how many coaches did you ever eject in 40 years? He said, not a one. I said, you never threw a coach out. He said, no, but I had a high school game one day. Coach came up to me before the game. He said, Mr. Blue, we've got a dog that the team has kind of adopted. He started coming to practice. The kids have rallied around him. Can he come in the dugout with us? Ricky looked him dead in the eye and said, does he have a uniform? He said, well, no, he can't be in the dugout. Didn't have one yet, right? That's a good example of some of the stories that Steve Harrison can spin at the Lauderdale County Sports Hall of Fame. Tell us again when it is, where it is. Everybody wants to know about tickets. And I ask you this every year because I know you hear this all the time. If you're out there and you would like to nominate someone, I know it's on your website, but give us the who, what, when, and where to one of the great events of the year. Well, it'll be a week from Saturday, March 14th at 630. We'll be back at the conference center. This is our 26th induction class. I think there's about 272 people we put in now. Brad Black has taken over kind of the day-to-day, did a great job last year with it. I just memorize and talk about them, but the Florence Conference Center, I'm sure Brad can be contacted probably on our website. It gives his cell phone number. He works at the trade school. You could contact him there, but we're expecting a really good crowd again. It's become a great event. I hope we don't have what happened last year. We were scheduled for the banquet and tornado warnings everywhere. We had to call that sucker off at the last minute and have it at 2 o'clock. We had to have it at 2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, which was really weird. We did it to let people get out of church, but also April Murphy went in last year and we had to give her time to get from Birmingham back up here from a travel ball she was coaching. It was pandemonium last year. Let's keep the T-word and everything else when it comes to bad weather out of the shows. Steve, All the best with it, man. Thanks so much for your time today. Thanks, guys. Y'all have really been great to support us through the years. Appreciate your head. Thank you, buddy. Bye-bye. Talking about great. That's a lot of work for Steve Harrison and the crew for the Lauderdale County Sports Hall of Fame. Coming up, we mention Nate Oates. Steve loves to fish. Hope you guys are having a great day. It's been a big couple of days here in Tuscaloosa. Quite warm. Currently in the 80s. So, yeah. Yep. So, we're having a good day. We're having a good day. A couple of days away, spring football. And, yeah, so we're spring football and the Nate Oates has kind of got some things clicking. When you look at, hey, recruiting a couple of minutes ago. And, hey, so everything is shiny on the side of film in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Let's talk about that latest news there. Anytime you pick up, here's looking at it. Here's what's good about this if you're looking at it through the eyes of Nate Oates. It's a five-star. His name is Jason Richardson. If that rings a bell, he's a younger brother of Orlando Magic guard Jason Richardson and former NBA veteran Jason Richardson. Anytime you can pick up someone with that many stars in front of your name with that kind of pedigree, it's like going to the Kentucky Derby. You look for horses with a good bloodline and it looks like this kid checks all the boxes. Yes, he does. Yes, he does. I got a text message a couple of minutes ago from a guy that's from Detroit and was Michigan State one of his finalists? I don't know if they were or not. Ole Miss was in there in Oregon. Yeah, Ole Miss, Creighton. Okay. I know he texted me a couple of minutes ago and he's the same guy that told me that Nate Oates was going to be pretty freaking incredible. But he simply just texted me and said he's a one-and-done player. He will play one year at the University of Alabama. This is a gigantic pickup for Nate Oates. He's a football guru up there. They kind of do what we do down here, talking basketball non-stop up there in Detroit. It's kind of really, really tied into the AAU circuit and all the different things there. Like I said, he's pretty excited and said that Alabama fans should be off the charts when you look and it's Mr. Richardson picked up here at the University of Alabama. Ryan, he is the third. Richardson is a five-star. Quaden Samuels is a four-star. And Terrace Bowie is a four-star. Those guys, what they have in common, they're among the top 33 players in the country. and Caleb Holtz, of course, is what everyone's waiting for, formerly at Buckhorn, transferred to Grayson, Georgia. He's going to be announcing this month or next month, but Alabama went for number 29 in the nation in recruiting and basketball now to number nine. Oh, wow. You know, if you think about what Nate Oates has been able to do just from a building standpoint, making money, he's brought in, you know, about $10 million, reported to Mike Rodak from Bama 247, who did that financial analysis of the University of Alabama Athlete Department and you look at Nate Oates and what he's been able to do, I mean, you almost just pinch yourself and to be able to think about the interest. I mean, this weekend, you know, I've told you guys this before, and people will say, well, it's Kaelin the board. Well, no, it happened a few years ago. I get more text messages for people wanting basketball tickets than I do football that's amazing. There's a smaller footprint when you look at basketball, right? I mean, you've got 14,000, 15,000, and in football, you've got 100,000, so, you know, it's easier to probably get tickets, but there's no telling how many people I've already had to say no to for this Alabama-Auburn game that's upcoming when you look at Coleman Coliseum. it's a hot ticket in Tuscaloosa this weekend. Brad, what's going to happen this weekend and beyond for this Alabama basketball team? Well, I think when you think about losing against the Georgia Bulldogs and kind of stopping the streak probably resets this team from a motivation standpoint, because sometimes in those streaks, you can kind of get lulled to sleep a little bit knowing that you're going to try to find a way to get out. So when you kind of track and begin to kind of analyze it, losing, it's always a bad thing to lose. As Nick Saban taught us, it's never okay to lose a game. It's never okay to lose. Well, maybe never okay to lose a game, but when you lose one, it's not the end of the world. It's college basketball. You know, you've got a chance here to finish what, nine out of ten in your last ten regular season games, and you go to Nashville with a lot of momentum, and if you're able to beat Auburn, then you lock up that number two seed. I think there's some other scenarios that you can do it, but 7.30 is the game on Saturday evening, but this team is going to live and die by shooting, and that's what it's been like all season. I mean, if they're cold, then it's going to be a problem. Their defense, you know, it's not going to be an elite defense. It's going to be one that you're going to have to outscore people, but the good thing is they've got, the last time I checked, number one scoring offense in the country when you look at it, and I know it fluctuates one, two, and three, but last time I checked there, it's number one that they could have changed, I guess, in the last couple of days. Basketball changes over pretty quick, but the good thing is you may not be the best in defense, but you're really, really good at offense, and you force teams to kind of get out of their element because you know that you're going to have to keep up with Alabama. You're going to have to run, you're going to have to try to find a way to score as many points as they do. So Alabama's one of those teams, and we had Jerry Palm on yesterday. He's got Alabama making a deep run in the NCAA tournament, but I think a lot of that hinges on, you know, you don't want to drop to Auburn, you want to be able to take care of business and get ready to go to Nashville and win a couple of games there and go get ready. I mean, it's crazy, but the standard now, correct me if I'm wrong, but it's kind of a sweet 16 or bust, right? I mean, if this team didn't reach 16 at this point, it would be a disappointment and think about what Nate Oates has been able to lift the standard to that type of standard. That's simply amazing. Let me see if you agree with this, and I think you may have mentioned it at some point in the last month. This isn't Nate Oates best team, but it's his best coaching job at Alabama. You know, when Drew DeArma and I talked about this on Monday, that is a very, very fair point, and this team has been able to manage some distractions. Now, you can credit, you can say, well, some of those distractions have been self-inflicted, and I think that's a fair argument. I don't think that's unfair, but regardless, they've been able to manage those distractions. They've been able to navigate some of those things, and you almost wonder if that was a galvanizing moment for this team, because everybody was throwing stones, and sometimes you can use that. I know I heard of Murray Allen a couple days ago talking about the Florida game, that the coaches still used that 177 beating as a motivation, and you hear Nate Oates, listen, you go back to the press conference that was after the Georgia game, it was pretty hot Nate Oates. He was pretty warm in that press conference following that Georgia game. He was not pleased with the effort, and like I said, it was a good reset for them to kind of humble them a little bit to try to understand, hey, you can be beat. I mean, this league is talented enough that you can lose, but finished up the regular season against Auburn and tried to find a way to kind of knock those guys on down a couple of notches, and right now it feels like that the two programs are traveling opposite directions. I don't know if it feels that way to you guys, but judging from an amateur opinion, it seems like one is on the uptick and the continued rise, and one is stagnant at best, if not going down. Listen, Bruce Pearls is a Hall of Fame basketball coach, but if you think about the momentum right now, that program looks to be taking some significant steps back with Stephen Pearl compared to Bruce Pearl. On-the-job training is always a learning curve. Ryan fell 109 FM down in Tietown. They say that football is about to get cranking as basketball edge into the sunset part of the calendar. Ryan, if you could sit down, we'll mention DeBoer, what would be one of the first two or three questions you would ask him coming into camp? That would be very simple. Let's talk about the offensive line. Let's talk about the rushing attack. everything we talked about in the last couple of weeks, when you look at this team offensively, I like where this team is at from a depth standpoint. If you look at the defensive front, you can't have any severe injuries. That's the thing that you can't predict. I think when you really get to thinking about this team, they're deep enough that they're going to have some healthy competitions, whether it's the guard spots, the tackle spots. We all focused on the quarterbacks. Will it going to be Austin Mack? Will it be Keelan Russell? Will it be one of these guys that will take charge? That's still to be determined. But it's going to be one of those that I think it's going to be a fun spring. I think it's going to be one of the most important springs that we've had in some time here. Everybody's focused on the quarterbacks, rightfully so. I think those would be questions. My understanding is we'll get that opportunity on Tuesday. I think the media availability that we are scheduled to talk with him. We haven't seen that go across my email. I know they're going to practice four times before spring break. We're going to have a couple of practices after. We're going to talk with some of the coordinators next week. But also Adrian Clem is another huge topic. Being able to figure out how to get this offensive line to be able to play. But how does he fit in with the current chemistry that you've got on this team? I think that is another big part of it. And then I think the question that I would love to come back to is and I'm sure it was personnel but I'd like to hear it from Kaelin the board is when you look at special teams and you begin to look at special teams it personnel you'd like to hear from that and I just think there's a there is some you know it's so crazy that the standard in Tuscaloosa because can you imagine how many people would die to finish in the top 10 to go in the playoffs and not only go to the playoffs but win a game in the playoffs I mean it's like the ship is crashing down in Tuscaloosa and it really isn't I mean it really isn't I mean think about it it's but we have kind of made it into that because of the standard that has been created here in Tuscaloosa is they expect to go and do something you know special every year I just don't think that's the new college football that you're not going to be able to do that every single year you're not going to be able to go out and win a national title Alabama fans are glued in and then to have you heard that and number two he also said that the spring game would be much more like the first spring that was a scrimmage than last year's practice walk around the field yeah I think the eighth day is something I can confirm because I've heard that you know when you look at a sponsorship when you look at Golden being a big sponsor they're not going to give that up it was too important so I know a lot of people are talking about well when you're going to come back or if it's going to come back what format and all these different things here but I think when you but the injuries I injury I knew a little bit about the Bray Herbert but the London Simmons was something new to me so good reporting violence to kind of break that story but you also like you want to find out behind these guys what type of competition left but it's also unfortunate William Sanders you know you feel like London Simmons you know what you're going to get out of him okay so he's a true freshman that Mississippi but then when you look at Ray Hubbard it gives you some other options but the biggest one there is William Sanders because I thought really he could compete at that left guard and now you wonder how this is going to hurt him not being able to compete at that spot that's going to set him high that to me is the biggest loss out of all those injuries is William Sanders at that left guard and from a local standpoint we pull for these local guys his dad is a sheriff deputy here in Tuscaloosa County from Brookwood and so we look at you know you kind of pull for those local guys they understand what it's like to wear that crimson jersey I think a lot of us were rooting that maybe he would get that I'm winning show today and where can we get online to listen well we're actually going to talk with a couple different guests we've got John Hickman is going to come in for the first hour and we're going to hang out and talk a little Alabama sports but he's a local movie actor that's here in Tuscaloosa going to come in and hang out with me he's a big booster at the University of Alabama Bruce Marshall which you guys meet quite often we're actually going to talk showers starting here in five or six minutes on Todd 109.com so I appreciate you guys so much thanks thanks so much Ryan have another five star show Ryan Fowler 109 FM in Tuscaloosa BB obviously speaking of Alabama the women ready to hopefully keep on rocking rolling at the SEC tourney tonight well I can tell one thing if Ace Austin hits four threes in the fourth quarter I think Alabama will continue to rock and roll against Tennessee kick back enjoy it as you say watch it here on the radio 93.9 the score later on tonight it's going to take care of biz for now on behalf of BB Greg James Blair the entire crew here Harold Buck thank you so much for your time today let's do it again tomorrow noon to two for the BMO Buck show back here on sports video 93.9 the score
