For the next hour we'll go in-depth as we talk to your University of North Alabama Lions. UNA Football Night from Lost Pizza is brought to you by Lost Pizza Shoals, Burnley Spine and Sport, Singing River Brewery, Alabama Health Guidance, Brenaissance Eye Care, Turbo Coffee and Brown Equipment Company. Live from Lost Pizza in historic downtown Florence, here's the voice of the Lions, Benjamin Ray. Except it's not Benjamin Ray here tonight. It's Brian Neese here with you alongside Grant Wakefield. Ben is actually on the road with men's basketball. They are in Clemson, South Carolina. They'll be taking on the Tigers. A 8 p.m. tip-off tonight coming up in about an hour. And so Ben is there. I am here. You'll have to put up with me and Grant for an hour here tonight, but it is good to be here. Grant, good to have you here. And UNA Football Night, I'll tell you what, this season's coming to a close quickly. It is. And glad to be here, Brian. And it feels like just yesterday we were in Bowling Green, Kentucky, about to kick off the season against Western Kentucky. And we're here. Final week of the regular season. It seemed like a very short year, but here we are, last week of the year. You know, I always think about football season in this type of way, that it takes forever and a day for it to get here. And then you snap your fingers three times, and here you are. You're in November. It doesn't take long for August 30th to November, whatever today is, 17th, for that to happen. And, man, it's almost over and done. It is. And for North Alabama, right, you go four weeks of non-conference play in the month of September, get a bye week, and that's eight weeks of UAC play. And I remember our first home game at Brawley. We were talking about the last season at Brawley, talking about all the celebrations we were going to have, and it was all building to what's coming this Saturday. And, of course, the final game at Brawley Stadium, one o'clock kick against Southern Utah. But it's just moved quickly. And like you said, you wait so long, and then the second it gets here, it's gone. Coach Dibberman is here. All of the seniors are here tonight here at Lost Pizza. It's good to have them out here tonight. They're milling around and chowing down on some great Lost Pizza. Invite you to come out here in the area to come on out and enjoy the menu and the things that Lost Pizza has here. Grant, as we get ready, we'll talk about this through the duration of the show tonight. The last game in Brawley, you've been around this program for a long time. You've watched UNA football for a long time. To hear that, is that something like you ever thought you would hear, the last game at Brawley? Not really. It kind of seems surprising to come in here when I was a freshman in college, to go to Brawley Stadium to work that game, and then to come back now, obviously, full-time role, and see the last game and see the progress of Bank Independence Stadium and what's coming up next. So it's been special over these last four years for me to see it. But, no, like you said, it wasn't something I would have expected to say, but here we are. It should be a fun one. I'm excited to see what Bank Independence brings next year as far as the stadium goes and everything that goes along with that. But Saturday is about the finale at Brawley and the seniors who were here or are here tonight to see what they put on that field that last game. And as Coach Dierman said in the postgame Saturday night, that game is about playing for all of the guys who have played previously inside of Brawley. And so you take that and collectively think about it, that's a lot to digest as a football team. It is. And we've seen a bunch of people come through. We've seen from the 40s to the 80s that first week, we've seen the 80s, the 2010s, the most recent years, and, of course, this Saturday we're honoring the 90s and the championship team from 1995 as well. But talk about all those guys, the history that this program brings, the history that that stadium brings. And you think of just how that all encapsulates, and it should be a fun day on Saturday. A lot to get to tonight, a lot of folks to talk to. We'll, of course, talk to Coach Dierman here in just a little bit. Javion Allen is here. Juice is here. Demarkeus Robinson is here. We'll talk to him. Jeff Hodges, who definitely has the history behind UNA and Brawley Stadium. He's here tonight. And, of course, we'll preview the upcoming game with Southern Utah as well. Right now we're at Lost Pizza. Invite you to come down. This is UNA Football Night at Lost Pizza on 93.9. The score. Flavor is calling at Lost Pizza Company Shoals. We're joined by Brent Dierman, the head coach of the UNA Lions. And, Coach, you came up here earlier and said the seniors are all here, and they're here tonight. This is a special bunch, isn't it? Yeah, it is. And for them to come out and support each other, I kind of challenged them a little bit after practice. I said, guys, let's just go hang out at Lost Pizza and get away from football and have this many guys show up. I think it was the free pizza more than the hangout time. We've got some more coming in now, so it's a great group of kids. And I want to make sure everybody understands that everything we do is about them. It's nothing about us as coaches. It's never about Brent Dierman. It's never about our coaching staff. It's everything we do is about those kids right there. And we pour everything we've got into them and love them like my own kids. So you go to the final home game at Brawley. We talked about that at the end of the game the other night about how – and you made a great point, and I said this just a second ago, about how this game you kind of encompass playing for everybody who's played in that stadium. It's a tall task if that was it alone. Yeah, we're not going to hide anything. We talked in our team meeting earlier today. I said, guys, average teams, average people look at where we're at right now, and they're going to say, you know what, this is not where we wanted to be. But most teams in the country in our situation would give up, stop fighting, and just plan the next step for seniors, their next step in life. But these kids showed up today and had a fantastic practice. These kids showed up today with a smile on their face, hungry. And we said, guys, here's what we're doing this week. We're playing for this group right here. We're playing for these – for Caleb Heavenly, for Cam Jamar, who's – Cam Jamar came here as a walk-on. And I'm going to brag on Cam Jamar for a second. I told the team this today. Cam Jamar went an extra year as a walk-on so we could get an extra scholarship player in here. Like, that's the type of human beings we have in this program that cares that much about this place. So we're going to play for all them. But we're also playing for the many, many alumni that have come through this place, the many fans and supporters we've got that's come to Brawley Stadium. We're going to send that stadium out the right way. We're going to send that 90s team, that 95 reunion that's going to be in the end zone. I told you when I walked in today, as I'm driving to practice today, I randomly get a text message from Tyrone Rush. I haven't talked to Tyrone Rush in a year. Yeah. And the Monday headed to practice, he texted me and says, Coach, we're behind you. We support you. We love what you're doing and building there. Keep chopping away. And, man, to get a message like that, I had to pick up the phone and I called him. And I said, man, you don't understand what that means to me. And I'm going to make sure I share that with the team. And, man, it's just been a – we all know that we're not where we want to be, but we know that we're going to keep fighting. And, Coach, let's jump back to the senior class for a minute. A lot of those guys have been with you your full three years here in Florence. Just how special is that to know that these guys, they've been with you this entire time? And even the ones that hadn't been with me the entire time, you look at Davon Martin. Davon Martin right here, my knucklehead from MTSU. So, I spent a year with him in another place and love him so much. Wanted to have him here with me. I can go down the list and give you stories on everyone. I'm from Captain Jack Rice in the back of the room over there. Love him to death. Noah Fuller came with us when Birmingham Southern shut down and is a special teams player. He has everything he has for the program. I mean, there's so many guys. Cam Jamar, EJ. Caleb Brown was in our first signing class. I'm trying to see who else has been here the whole time. There's a bunch of them over there. Caleb Hathaway. There's a big old group of guys. So, I said it earlier. I'm going to keep saying it. I love every single one of these guys like I love my own kids. I spend more time with them than I do my own children. So, I'm excited about hanging out with them tonight more than anything. How have they become leaders of this team? Some of them, they've been here pretty much their whole career. But even the ones who have not, how have they become the leaders of this team? I think you can talk about every single guy over there. You know, Juice Allen is probably the leader of the group. Juice is a lead-by-example guy. We're getting more. We've got to clear some tables out. Big tables out here. But Juice works his tail off. If we practice at three, Juice is going to be there at two. If we lift at seven, he's going to be there at six. He leaves by example. He speaks when he needs to. And then his play backs it up. You know, this past game, we installed the Wildcat formation more than ever. And he took some hits. He played physically. He played hard. He never quits. He's kind of the face of that senior class. And Caleb Haley is another guy that's been here this whole time. I think this is his career receptions year. He does everything for us from blocking. I mean, I just love the group. I don't know if y'all can tell. Obviously. That's a good thing. And, Coach, you talk about players that made impacts on all of that. But as a coaching staff as a whole, you've had a lot of this coaching staff here with you as well. And just being able to gel both the players and them together, how has that been? I mean, I've always been taught. I've been in different programs throughout my 17 years of coaching. I've worked at places that I hated going to work every day. I've worked at places that my boss was a hard guy to please. And I never wanted to try to be that way. Now, I am probably sometimes. But I want my coaches. I want my players. I want my coaches' families. I want my players' kids. I want everybody to feel like it's a family. And they can always be welcome there. You know, the tough part of our business is we get held accountable of winning and losing. And there's decisions that are made sometimes that are tough decisions. But it doesn't change my love for people. It doesn't change my love for these players on who's starting and who's not starting. It doesn't change my love for coaches, previous coaches, current coaches. I mean, I love these guys. But at the end of the day, we've got to win football games. I want to bounce back to Juice for just a second here. We're talking about him. And Ben and I were talking about him in the booth Saturday night. I think if you went and you cut up all the film of every single game, you would struggle to find one single run where he did not run as hard as he possibly could. Now, as a coach, you might see it a little bit different. But I think you'd struggle to find anything like that. Yeah, he gives everything he's got. Like I said earlier, he's an epitome of what we're doing here. His presence, his fingerprint has been left on this program. I can promise you that. As we get into the next year, as you get into 10 years down the road, people are going to be talking about that kid. They're going to be talking about him and how he played the game the right way. He played physical. He poured his every bit of – like in 2 Kings, he poured every bit of his oil he had in his cupboard out and gave everything he had for his brothers. I think that's why they respect him the way that they do. Players feed off him, don't they? They do. You know, when you've got a physical running back, it gets you excited. If he makes a big run, you know, even Jalen Daniels this past game had a run up our sideline where they're – Tarleton's kind of hard-hitting safety. J.D. throws his shoulder and actually knocks him back. And you saw our whole sideline react to that. Big hits like that or tough plays usually get the sideline fired up and get guys. Another one that we don't talk about a lot that I forgot to mention last week or two weeks ago, Destin Wade played a whole drive a couple weeks ago on that broken ankle. Yeah. And I think when our players found that kind of information out, you get even more respect for a guy when you find out a little thing. Man, he played a – kind of a scoring drive, that field goal drive that we had, he played on a broken ankle, so we've just got some tough kids. And I'll kind of go back to what you said. The sideline erupts when they see big plays like that. With your team, how special is it to know that no matter – it could be a long run, it could be a short run, whatever, it could be a big sack, whatever, but that team's always going to be cheering from the sideline. That's a sign of a good close-knit team is when they celebrate for others. Me and Tristan Johnson, our volleyball coach, talk about there's a word called medito. That's a big word in his program, and we use it sometimes, too, of saying sheer joy for someone else's success. And when one guy gets a sack and you see the joy Caleb Brown has for Jaheim Ingram, when Headley gets a big play and Burkhalter's the first person there, Noah Gregg had a touchdown earlier in the year that Tanaka Scott was the first person to meet him and collapse on him, just pure joy for a teammate. It ain't about me, it's about us. And I think that's what this class is going to be defined as. The one thing in talking about that I think is remarkable, and you see that on the sideline, if you pay attention at all, even through a season where it's not where anybody wants it to be, you still continue to see things like that. Guys celebrating wins on that sideline with each other, and to see that in a season where it hadn't been exactly what you wanted it to be, that's impressive. Well, there's two things I want to make sure we continue to say. We're going to win football games, and that's the number one thing is we're going to win football games. But here's what we're also going to do. We're going to love people. This program isn't about just bringing kids in and not caring about them. This program is about loving people, and we're going to love each other. We're going to love these kids. Juice and DeMarquias here tonight. Which one of those is going to eat more pizza here tonight? Juice is not a big eater. Juice is a picky eater. Juice probably only ate one piece just because everybody else ate some. Juice watches everything he puts in his body. Because he knows that he's about to take a pound in every Saturday, so he really takes care of his body. Now, you look at the amazing physique of Christian Burkhalter and Caleb Hedlison right there. I was going to ask. You see that look you got? The two of them probably ate a large pizza each. All right, Coach. We'll let you get back to digging over there. We'll bring you back here in just a little bit. I'm an Otis fan. You're the Otis guy. I tell you what, this is probably the smoothest first segment we've ever had since I've been doing the show. I mean, Ben, Mike, did y'all hear that? I didn't pay him to say it either. I didn't pay him to say that. I don't know where that come from. We'll come back on more at Lost Pizza on 93.9 to score. Flavor is calling at Lost Pizza Company Shoals. Introducing the new limited-time-only margarita pizza. Javion Juice Allen is here with us. And Juice, first of all, thanks for stopping by. I didn't mean to take you away from pizza. I don't know what you got going on over there, but thanks for coming in here with us. And the first question I have for you, we hear this all the time, the life shelf or whatever of a running back. Are you 100% right now as we go into the final game? Yeah, I'm absolutely 100%. But you know it's week 12. Everybody's banged up. Everybody's hurting a little bit. It's football. So, yeah, I feel great though. Coach is even coaching you about the microphone. I mean, does he ever stop coaching? No, not at all. He does not stop coaching, doesn't he? All right, so talk to us about a broad picture of the season so far from a Juice perspective. How do you feel your season has gone individually as a whole up until this point? Individually, I feel I've given it my all. I've been the best teammate I could be. I try to be the best role model for the young guys. And from my point of view, that's really my main goal is to bring somebody with me. Sure. So just like being in the backfield with J.A., I'm trying to bring him to get better every day and to prepare him for whatever his future holds for him. And, Juice, your second year here, and really, like Coach Jimmer was saying, you stepped up along with your senior class. There's been a big leader on this team. What has that been like over the last two seasons? Man, when you've got that C on your chest, it means a lot. That my guys trust me to be the captain. Coaches trust me. It means a lot to be a leader on any team. It doesn't matter how old you are. A leader is a leader. And the fact that I had to go home for family reasons when the guys picked the captains and they still chose me while I wasn't there, it meant a lot to me for that to happen. All right, Juice, take us. None of us get to go inside of a huddle. None of us get to be on the field in that moment. Take us inside the huddle. When that play is called and you know what the play is, take us to the line of scrimmage. What is the first thing that Juice is looking at? What's he seeing? What's he looking at from the defense when you know what's coming from that huddle? One thing is just reading the whole field, just knowing where certain people are, where the play might go, where the play might not go, who I have to block, who might blitz. It's just a lot of things you've got to look at before the ball is even snapped so you can execute at a high level. Is it something where when you step up there and you know when the snap count's coming and you see something that maybe you didn't expect, are you in that moment kind of thinking about a lot of different things or do you have one focus in mind there? Typically, I usually have tunnel vision because I trust my preparation. And when certain things happen, you just got to let it play out. And I don't want to say hope for the best because... You're prepared. Yeah, you already know what's going to happen. And let's jump back. This year alone, what has been your absolute favorite play, favorite moment that you've had so far? Favorite moment of the year? There's probably a lot, I would guess. One of them was probably seeing Noah Gregg's first touchdown. Oh, yeah. That brought a lot of joy to everybody, just knowing he's from around here. He was a walk-on. He earned his spot. A lot of people love that guy. So, that was probably one of my favorite memories so far. Javion Allen is with us here on UNA Football Night at Lost Pizza. All right. So, you get in the end zone. What is that feeling like? Never had that opportunity. Don't even know what it's like. But when you got the football in the end zone, describe that feeling to us. I don't really know. It's got to feel good, though, right? Yeah. It's obviously a good feeling. I guess it's like a feel of relief that the preparation, it finally paid off. So, I'll say it's like probably like a Friday paycheck. Are you the guy that just hands the football back to the officials and does celebrating on the sideline? Or do you get after it a little bit in the end zone? Growing up, my dad always told me to sprint to the back line and just hand the ball to the ref. So, I don't really celebrate. It's probably a good thing. Coach German, wherever he is, he's probably appreciating that a little bit. Yeah. I celebrate with my teammates first. Yes, sir. So, that's most important to me. All right. We go into the game on Saturday. Southern Utah comes to town. What do we see out of Juice Allen on Saturday? I would have to show you better. I don't want to sound cocky, but I would have to show you better than I can tell you right now. We'll get after it a little bit. Yeah. It's still early in the week. Like I said, I got to trust the preparation before I can even speak on that. I understand that. Well, I want to ask you this about your offensive line because everything kind of starts there with the snap of the ball and then everything kind of builds from that point at the offensive line. And you have had a great offensive line this year. Talk about those guys a little bit. Yeah. So, those guys don't get stats. And that's a big thing in football. Those guys don't really get the recognition that they deserve. We got five guys, and we got guys that sometimes rotate, go in. We have some guys banged up. And those guys get after it every day. Without a doubt, those guys probably have the hardest job on the field. They got to protect. For one, without the center, the play can't even start. So, those guys just put their head down and work all the time. It seems like to me, watching from the booth anyway, that every play, there's a different offensive lineman and different player altogether, but a different offensive lineman who is opening those holes. And it's on both sides of the football, left side, right side. The holes that they have given you this year, you can tell those guys are prepared and they are working. Yeah, absolutely, yeah. And a lot of, on that offensive line, a lot of shakeup as well, but how special has it been to see that just guys just step in and continue that dominance that the offensive line has had? That just proves the preparation works. They're hungry to play. They're ready to play. And when they get in, they don't let their opportunity slip from them. For sure. All right, I hope I don't put you on the spot here, but I might. But, Coach Dierman, I don't know where he went to. Where is he? Do you have a good, there he is. You may want to be careful here. A good Coach Brent Dierman story that you can share with us? I mean, something that's not going to make you run extra tomorrow or the next day? Is there something you can give us? Or do I need to ask somebody else? The best thing I've seen was one day he came to practice with his shoes spatted up. And he had some tape on his knees, and he was playing quarterback. And he went to do a speed option play. He slipped one time. Look, he's defending himself now. He's defending himself. Yeah, there was another play when he did throw a touchdown. All right, now I've seen him sling it before. Can he still let it rip? Yeah, he still got it a little bit. He still got it a little bit? Okay, all right. Yeah, I called his remainder games. Can you believe that? Yeah, that was a long time ago. I'm not saying he's old. I'm just saying that was a while ago. Juice, thank you for what you do, man. We enjoy watching you play. It's a pleasure to watch you play. And I was telling Coach Dierman this earlier, man, and we talked about this Saturday night. Every single time the ball's in your hands, you're running with 100% effort. So thank you for that. And looking forward to Saturday. Yes, sir. Appreciate you. All right, there he is, ladies and gentlemen. Juice Allen, running back for the University of North Alabama. Juice, appreciate it. Yes, sir. All right, we'll take a break. When we come back, Demarkeus Robinson is around here somewhere. We'll get him. There he is right over there. I see him now. We'll get him up here in just a second. For now, it is UNA football title at Lost Pizza on 93.9 The School. Flavor is calling at Lost Pizza Company Shoals. Introducing the new limited-time-only margarita pizza. DeMarquias Robinson has joined us here at the table. And first of all, your go-to pizza here. I'll say my go-to pizza here is the taco pizza. Okay. Yeah, the taco pizza. Is there a number two that would be right under that? Cheese pizza. I got to go with cheese pizza. Just plain cheese pizza guy. All right. So, take us through what you see on the field. We talked with you just a second ago at the running back position when DeMarquias lines up. And first of all, my favorite part of any UNA football game this year is when you just rock some quarterback. I mean, just lay him out. You just want to get that out there, first of all. So, hint, hint for Saturday. But take us up to the line of scrimmage. When you're there and the offense is getting set, what are you looking for? I'm looking at my key, my assignments first, and then second when the ball is now, I'm looking for the ball. I'm looking to go to the ball. So, I'm going to go ahead real quick. Let's get your mic closer. No, you're good. There you go. Coach Jim, we need him to coach you up on that. All right. So, the year so far has not been what anybody wanted. But you guys, as both of these guys have just said, continue to play hard, continue to battle. Why is it this team seems like it's so close and you have such a brotherhood? I mean, is that the case with this team? Yes, sir. It definitely is. Ever since I got here, when I first stepped foot on campus, in the classrooms, back home in the apartments, our roommates, in the team meeting rooms, it's just all good vibes everywhere. Everybody take care of each other. It's fun to come to work with you guys every day. It truly is. I look forward to coming to work with you guys every day. In the market, yes, it's been a defense that's flown around all year long, right? We've made big plays. Defensive lines come up, big sacks. You've got a couple of big sacks, big hits on your end as well. And what has that been like, playing on his defense under Coach Carabella? Oh, man, I love it, man. It's fun with everybody. We practice hard. So, it's amazing. It's fun to see everybody make plays out there, man. I'm happy for the guys. It's fun. Just see the work that we put in, just come action on Saturdays. I love it. It's fun. It's fun to watch. Coach Carabella will get after it in practice a little bit. Does he get a little boisterous out there every now and then? Yes, sir. Every day he goes to the standard. Yes, sir. All right. So, we asked this about Coach Jim. Do you think Coach Carabella, do you think he could still get after it a little bit? No, no. I mean, he goes through the drills. I say, he goes through the drills with us. He did it. All right. Southern Utah this Saturday. What do you see from them? What do they bring to this game offensively? What are you going to have to look for Saturday? They play everybody in the conference. This is a great conference. Like, every team is good. So, you can't look at anybody down. It's a pretty good team. They got great players. They can run the ball, pass the ball, great quarterback. So, I definitely got to come on our game in Saturday. Let's jump back to practice for a second. What's it like going against Juice on every given day in practice? It's fun going against Juice. I never know what I'm going to get with Juice, but it's just competitive. Sometimes he get me. Sometimes I get him. But I feel like I think I won most of the battles. I say, hey. You see that look you got from there. All right. Let me ask you this. Take us inside the locker room. Before that game, before you guys run out. Some guys are quiet. Some guys are, you know, all over the place. Some guys banging their head. I've seen everything in a locker room. DeMarquise Robinson, what's the mindset? Ten minutes before kickoff, what's going on? I like to listen to music. I like to just chill. Just listen to music. Just vibe. Just be to myself for a little bit. We got the music playing in the locker room. Just live out the energy from around me, from the players. So care about yourself a little bit then, though? Yeah. A little bit. Yes, sir. Sometimes. All right. Last home game this Saturday as well. What's it been like to play inside Braley Stadium your first year here at North Alabama? That's amazing. I'm grateful to play in such a historic stadium. Every game we have, fans come out. They support us. That plays a big role in how we play. It's been fun. Just to play in front of all my team, classmates, teachers, and everybody that come out and support us. It's been fun. That's kind of where I was going with the next question is the fan support here at UNA hasn't wavered. It's been good. North Alabama has always had a great fan base, and they have come out this year and supported you guys. So when you get a packed stadium like Braley will bring, that's got to be energetic to you guys on the field. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Talk about that. When you hear that crowd get roaring, does that kind of amp you up a little bit? It definitely amps you up. It makes you want to make a play. It's just fun. That's what we live for, like college football. It's definitely fun. What's the hardest hit you've laid this year? I know that's a tough one. You have to think about that one for a minute. But is there one that just pops out like, oh, yeah, I remember this. I laid this guy out. He had no shot. Is there a game that you remember or a specific hit that you remember like that through the course of this year up until now? And that may be coming Saturday. I'm just saying. It just might be. Probably Saturday because I can't think of one right now. Okay. All right. So, we're going to hold you to that. So, it's got to be Saturday, okay? We'll hold you to that. All right. Coach Dierman, this year, talk about playing for him and how he is as a coach to you guys. It's fun playing for Coach Dierman. He got me here. I appreciate him a lot for that. Just coming to work with – he holds us to the standard every day. He comes to practice. We want to come to practice and work. And that's – if you want to play football, that's – I appreciate that. He just – I just – every day never waver. Just being there for us outside of football, too. So, it's fun. It's been great. I've been grateful to play for him. All right. You're from Warner Robins, Georgia. You came over – you went to Georgia Southern first. You came over to North Alabama. What's it been like going from middle Georgia to North Alabama? It's been a little different, but I actually – I love it. I love it here. I'm playing football. It's peaceful out here. I'm making good friends, great connections. I love it. I'm playing. I've met lots of great people here. I enjoy it out here. Favorite thing about playing football? I get to hit people. I knew that was coming. I knew that was coming. Is there anything else? I mean, you know, that – you know, I guess part of it's got to be with the brotherhood that you have here. That's got to be part of it as well. I know going out and laying somebody out. Like, knocking a quarterback's head off is great. But playing with these guys that are in here tonight, that's got to be huge too. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. It's fun coming out here. Just knowing these guys, just like personally. And just seeing the guys, like we work hard at practice. So, just seeing like everybody like come out and make plays. How they're just having fun. Just football, like when you're playing football, it's just like outside of like – it's football. It's not like – you don't have to worry about anything else on your mind. It's just football. So, it's very – it's fun. And kind of we'll wrap up with this, DeMarcus. Just overall, wrap – your one season here at North Alabama, wrap that up into just a few words. It's been blessed, I'll say that. Playing great football. It definitely could be better. The season is not going how we want it to go. But I enjoy every last second with you guys from the season when the season ends. I enjoy it. I'm grateful. I get to know these guys that play football here. All right. DeMarcus, Saturday, we're looking for that big hit. And we're going to be yelling up there in the booth when it happens. So, get ready for that, okay? Yes, sir. All right. There he is, ladies and gentlemen, DeMarcus Robinson. And good luck Saturday. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks a lot. Appreciate it. All right. We'll pause here. When we come back, Jeff Hodges is in the building. We'll talk to him coming up about the last game at Brawley. Get some information from him and kind of celebrate what's coming up Saturday here on UNA Football Night at Lost Pizza. 93.9 score. Flavor is calling at Lost Pizza Company Shovels. Coach, kind of previewing what's coming up Saturday. Of course, the final game in Brawley, but Southern Utah coming in and a pretty good football team coming in 6-5, 5-2 in the conference. What do you see from Southern Utah? I'll tell you what, I know a lot about Southern Utah. Their head coach was my offensive coordinator in college my junior year. And I tell them this to his face now, and he agrees with me. I passionately hated him. Passionately hated him. This was a young Coach Fitz, not married, no kids yet, and he came in hot every day and chewed me out and used some choice language back then that he doesn't use anymore. Now he's married with kids. But every week, me and him kind of bounce things off each other for league games. He's a phenomenal football coach. He's always ran the ball. He was a running back coach at UT Martin before coming to us at Bethel. We ran the ball extremely well because of him. And his teams have always been physical. His teams have always been sound. We know that they're going to come in. I mean, they're on a five-game win streak. They're 6-5. They're playing for a chance to get in the playoffs. If they go seven FCS wins, in their mind, they're going to get in the playoffs, and they probably deserve to get in the playoffs. You know, they were probably the first team out of the playoffs last year, so they're sitting in that same boat. So it's a playoff game for them. So it's going to be a great environment. It's going to be a great game. I think our kids are going to show up and play hard, and we're going to do everything we can to go get this win. Their running back coach won Conference Player of the Week, Offensive Player of the Week this week. How important is it that we stop him, stop the run? I mean, everybody's got to be eyes on the run fit. I mean, they do a really good job. I've actually talked to them throughout the last ten years. Me and Coach Fitz have went back and forth clinic-ing with each other, and we've talked to RPOs a lot, and they are running RPOs really well. And when you have a very talented running back like they do, it makes the RPO even more deadly because everybody's eyes are in the run fit. He is an extremely talented player. If you go back to last year, they had a really good running back last year. They do a good job of finding great backs. Their offensive line plays hard. I love their center. They've got a center that's probably 5'10", 5'11", that you don't really see that much, and he gets after it. I love the way he plays the game. They use tight ends a lot. They're in 12 personnel a lot. So they're going to be a tough offense to prepare for this week. Johnston Wood, at quarterback, how does he go from where he was on the depth chart to being the starter? I mean, I don't know. I don't know anything about being a quarterback, obviously, but it's kind of like drinking from a fire hose. I mean, I would imagine for the first, getting ready for that first game. You know, I think there was a week that I broke down a play on our coach's show, and I think I took three or four minutes to break down one passing concept of what goes on through a quarterback's head, of setting the protection, of knowing where your eyes are supposed to start, knowing who on the defense is your coverage indicator, of what's my drop on this play, what's the back have on this play, what's to check if I get this look, what's to check if I get this kind of front. There's so many different things that's put on that guy's plate. Now, it helps a little bit that we have the helmet technology now. So up to 15 seconds, I can speak to him. So I try to help him as much as I can, give him protection, give him where he's going to be hot, little things like that. But as a true freshman, it's tough to go in against probably the best defense in our conference against Tarleton State. But he won that opportunity because he won over his teammates, he won over the coaching staff. Everybody sees the ability that he has. And not to say that other guys in the room don't have it, but I think he earned the right to go out and do that. And he'll be the first one to tell you he didn't play up to his standard. But it's just an opportunity for a young kid to get better. You look at what's coming ahead with Southern Utah. We kind of mentioned this, a team that's hot coming in, winning five in a row. You mentioned this earlier, playing the last game in Raleigh for those guys that had played there before, but also for the guys that are on the field. There's a lot of emotion coming into Saturday. Yeah, there is. Last game at senior night, we've got 22 seniors that are going to have their families there pregame, their families there the whole game. They'll probably come in, a lot of them on Friday, so they'll eat dinner with their family Friday night, hang out with them. For so many of these guys, it's going to be their last opportunity to wear those football cleats, and it really don't hit you until you're in that locker room. And it's emotional for that reason. It's going to be emotional for the fact that so many greats are going to be standing there in that tent. I think Jeff has the numbers, but Jeff is telling me there's so many different Hall of Famers that are coming back to this event. I mean, the last time to get dressed in that locker room, the last time to play at Raleigh Stadium, there's so many different emotions that's going to go into this game, and I think our kids are going to handle it well. One final question. Coach, what's it going to take to get a win on Saturday? You know what? If you can remember last year's game, just preparing everybody, kind of our fan base, we had possession of the ball four drives in the first half last year. Their offense is built around holding the ball, having long drives, kind of eating clock up. So we've got to be efficient offensively with the drives that we do have. You're looking at probably eight or nine possessions in a ball game. Normally, it's about 13 or 14 possessions in a game. You're going to be limited in your possessions. We've got to do a great job of knowing what our run fits on defense are, of tackling in open space because they're running back. We've got to keep our eyes on our key so the RPO in the passing game doesn't hurt us. And then they've got two quarterbacks that they play. One is a true pure passer, very accurate guy, older guy. And then they play kind of a dual threat guy that can do all things. And I think he's pretty dynamic when he takes off as a runner. And they're going to be sound in what they do. So I think we've got to play an A game in Browley Stadium. And I think our home fans, I think our crowd, our band, are just going to help us to be able to play the way that we need to play. Coach, appreciate you stopping by. Thank you. All right, that is Coach Brent Dierman. We'll come back with Jeff Hodges. UNA football night. Lost Pizza rolls on after this on 93.9. The score. Burnley Spine and Sport Chiropractic is proud to partner with UNA to keep our lions performing at their best. Roar Lions. UNA football night rolls on. Jeff Hodges has joined us here. And, Jeff, a big Saturday for University of North Alabama, the last football game for University of North Alabama inside Brawley Stadium. You ever think you'd hear that? No. You know, if you think about it, everybody that's played at UNA, so the thousands of people that played football at UNA from 1949 to currently played at that same site. Yeah. I mean, the field's been a little different, but it's the same location. You know, it's turf now, it used to be grass, but everybody that in this program, whether it was Harlan Hill in the 1950s to his son Jerry in the 80s or brothers or father-son, you know, anybody that's ever played here has played at that site. It's incredible. Big reunion Saturday. Yeah, we got the 1985 team in particular back. It's the 30th anniversary of their national championship. They were the only team in the history of NCAA scholarship football at that time to win three straight national championships. They were invited to the White House, met President Clinton, all that, so 30th anniversary of those guys, but it's a whole decade, so the 1990s, and this was our most successful decade in school history, and that's saying a lot because we've had a couple of really great ones, but this group in particular, 87, 31, and 1 over the decade, and if you look at the accomplishments of the student-athletes, I mean, there's so many superlatives in there, but 25 All-Americans in this 10-year period, 10 of them are multi-year All-Americans, a Harlem Hill Trophy winner, five NFL draft picks, eight other guys, signed NFL free agent contracts, and 22 players or coaches that were in this era are already in our Athletic Hall of Fame, and as far as we know, as of right now, 15 of them will be here on Saturday. That's amazing. And we talk just the history of Broadway Stadium, right? The amount of players, like you mentioned, thousands of players that came through, and UNA is a story program, and to see where all of those players have played, it's a big deal come Saturday. Oh, yeah, I mean, we've played 423 games at Brawley, and that's a whole lot of games. We won 281 of them, so a great winning percentage, but so many significant games there, moments there, the three national championship games, obviously. 1985, we hosted Bloomsburg in the national semifinal and won 34 to nothing, and it's the only time we ever lost a goalpost. We had about 20 fans storming the field, and we have a great picture of one of our infielders hanging from the crossbar trying to bring it down. They were able to bend it down. They couldn't get it all the way down, but that's the only time we lost a goalpost. The national championship years, we had police ringed around the post, but just so many memories. But again, so many just outstanding players, whether they were with us or the opposing team, the Division II championship game. So many great coaches have been through there, so many players on that field. We've got about two minutes left here. So how do you sum up Brawley Stadium? You've been at UNA a long time. How do you sum up Brawley Stadium? It is our history. I mean, it's our, you know, we're going to make some new memories and have some new experiences at Bank Independent Stadium. But this is the history of our program. And as you said, all of our coaches, everybody has memories there, whether it was tailgating and, you know, the band and the fans and homecomings. Everything has been on that site. So, again, it's hard to kind of think about that this is it, but this is it. And this is a good way to go out when you bring them back, like I said, this particular group of folks and try to go out on a high note with this year's team and, you know, end it with a win. But it's just different to think about. It's something to behold. Yeah, it is. And to wrap up with this, this year's been a year of reunions, right? We've started with the 40s to the 80s, the 80s, the 90s this week, obviously the early 2000s, 2010s. To see all those players come back and you played a big part in that, just how special was it to see everybody back? I think that was the best part of the season for me by far is just getting to, you know, rekindle friendships and, you know, acquaintances, but also seeing all those people interact with each other. Now they're like even the group, you know, the last home game, they had little babies because these are people from the 2010s, but they have really small children. Another group, they have like teenagers and, you know, and what's your kids doing now? And so here's my wife, here's my, you know, my children. And so all of them, just families interacting and still having that connection to UNA is outstanding. And a lot of them, their children are already going to UNA or planning to come to UNA. One of them is a softball signee. So, you know, it's just continue the tradition. Final game at Brawley this Saturday, 1 p.m. kickoff. Invite you to come on out there and be a part of this. It's been a part of UNA's history, as Jeff Hodges just mentioned. So I invite you to come be a part of that. Don't miss that. This is one that you want to be at and you'll remember for a long time. As North Alabama kicks it off at 1 o'clock against Southern Utah Saturday. Guys, thank you so much. Thank you. It's been fun. Thank you. UNA basketball coming up next against Clemson. This has been UNA football night at Lost Pizza on 93.9 to score. You've been listening to UNA football night from Lost Pizza. Tonight's show is brought to you by Lost Pizza Shoals, Burnley Spine and Sport, Singing River Brewery, Alabama Health Guidance, Renaissance Eye Care, Turbo Coffee, and Brown Equipment Company.
