For the next hour we'll discuss Florence Falcons football with coaches and players. Now live from Lost Pizza in historic downtown Florence, here's the voice of the Florence Falcons, Kevin Johnson. And good evening and welcome to the Florence Falcons football night live at Lost Pizza here as we have a good crowd of Falcon fans coming in. A lot of Falcon blue around. It's been a busy downtown Florence time this week. Lots of going on, Renaissance fair. But speaking of Renaissance, boy, how about those Florence Falcons? They've had a renaissance this season, turned things around and now have an important game tomorrow night at Brawley Stadium against the Spartan Senators. We're looking forward to that. And we're joined now by the head coach of the Florence Falcons, Coach Kenny Morrison. And Coach, I don't know about you, but it just seemed like Thursday night couldn't get here fast enough this week. Yeah, the front end part, boy, it was slow Monday, Tuesday. I didn't think we'd ever get here, but all of a sudden it's here and it's game time right around the corner. How much excitement has there been at Florence High School this week and around the city? A lot. Yeah, a whole lot. A lot, which is good. We're great to bring some excitement. We're glad to bring excitement to the community. I know everybody's fired up about it, but there's been a lot of noise for our guys to listen to, and as Coach Saban calls it, rat poison. So we've got to quieten that noise down and worry about us and focus in. Again, a lot of Florence fans here tonight at Lost Pizza. A lot of folks have been asking about the game, asking me about things. I know if they're asking me, I know they've been asking you as well. But that's a good thing that you're in this position. You are now to get ready to play tomorrow night. We'll talk about that in just a few minutes. But the past few weeks, your team has jailed. I mean, they have really jailed and put together four game-win streak. What a run by your team? Guys, hats off to our senior class. As we've said on the radio show before, after that Austin loss, our guys, seniors just said we're not going to be denied. They called a senior meeting on that Sunday at 4 o'clock and hashed some things out, called me in there. We spent about an hour in there talking about things, and we made some adjustments as a coaching staff. I listened to a bunch of young men that I respect greatly. I asked them one time how many senior classes did they think I'd ever met with in my entire coaching career, baseball, softball, track, whatever it might have been, and they looked at me. I said, you're the first. Wow. And that's the respect I've got for this senior class. And they were very mature in what they ask of us. You know, we start asking to be more physical at practice and us to maybe be a tad bit harder on them. You don't usually get that out of young men these days, and they wanted it. And, you know, we even said one time, hey, we're going to go to shells. They said, no, we're going full. So these guys have taken over and ran the show, and I'm proud of them. Has this team, I know you've talked about, you've said how many times you've had this happen, only one team. Has this team reminded you of a team from your past, either when you were at Decatur, at Fayetteville, or somewhere? You know, we had some really good teams at Decatur, and I remember a bunch that we went 12-1 with. And as juniors, that senior class that went 12-1 as juniors, they went 4-6, and we probably had one of the best teams I've ever been around athletically. We were loaded. Rolando McClain that played at Alabama was on that team. Oh, yeah. Eighth pick in the draft to the Oakland Raiders. I mean, we were really talented. We went 4-6 with that group. And, you know, everybody's grumbling in the stands how we go that way with that bunch. And, you know, when it starts dealing about team chemistry and just the overall guys doing things the right way and committed to doing things the right way, that next year's group was a lot less talented, but they were bought in, gelled. We went 12-1 and lost to Coleman in the quarterfinals and had a chance to go to the semifinals. Now, it would have ended semifinals. Barrett Trotter and that bunch at Briarwood Christian would have handled us. Pretty good team. They'd have handled us that next week. But, yeah, that bunch, this bunch reminds me of them. They just, they gel. They pull for each other. They love each other. It's a brotherhood. We feel like they love the coaches, and their coaches love them. So, it's a lot of good, it's special right now. I'll put my blinker on and come into your lane for a minute. It reminds me over the years of covering Florence Falcons of the 2017 team that won the first-ever region championship. The same, you know, 48 kids, I think, was on that team. And they just gelled together and came together. And it was very similar in that way. Yeah, we've got a guy coaching on our staff right now, a little Drake Roy. And he's got the region championship sitting at his desk. He's pointed at it every day. And so, it's a good reminder, good for him to be a part of this. Because when guys have been there as a player, and now they're a coach on the staff, they get it. They know what it takes. And so, here we are. Last week, a fourth quarter comeback once again. Making big plays when you're down and you throw up 28 in the fourth quarter to go away and win it 45-29. It says a lot about the maturity of this team. For sure. I can sum up that 28 points. The guy for the Huntsville Times came to me and he said, Coach, after he interviewed me, he asked, could you tell me about these four touchdowns? I said, I have no clue. I don't know who scored, what happened. It happened so fast and we just kept rolling. The momentum was going and we're over there. Just keep doing what we're doing. Don't change anything. Again, maturity. Those guys, it was 17-14. Huntsville went up 7-0 and then we kicked a field goal to go up 17-14 and they're driving and got it down there close. Our guys never acted like it was an issue. We got a turnover and the track meet started and it was on. So, proud of these guys. And, again, 17-7 down at J.C. And you looked at that sideline and you never thought we were out. Right. And then, you know, coming into Bob Jones, we felt like that going into that game was a big program win, a turning point for us. But those guys at that point said, we're not going to be denied. We're not going out like this. And we talked to them all the time, how you want to be remembered. And this bunch will forever be remembered and they've left their mark. Regardless of what happens tomorrow night, regardless of what happens at Oxford, regardless of what happens in the playoffs, this class of 2026 has left their mark on Florence football. Well said there by Coach Kenny Marson of the Florence Falcons. We're live at Lost Pizza for Florence Falcons football night tonight. Lots of blue in the house. I guarantee you that. Come on by and join us. We'll be here for the next hour talking about Florence Falcons football and the big game tomorrow night against the Spartan Senators. And, Coach, you talked about Coach LaDrake Roy in that region championship on his days. He might have it under his arm right now. He might be carrying it around. I know him too well. So, he's probably excited about it as well. Let's talk about your offense. This offense has found an identity in the past four weeks. And they seem to be adding to it. That's a beautiful thing about it. For sure. And it's been 11 guys trying to do things as one. We talked to them all the way through. I mean, they've heard it ever since we've been here. You know, 10 guys can do everything right and one guy mess it up with just not knowing his assignment or just not finishing through a play. And this group has played hard. They've played together. They've played under some injuries that guys have stepped up and stepped in and been the next man up mentality. And I'm going to give a big shout out to our quarterback, Cade Davis. And he's in the room over here. I see him smiling already. But it takes, I played the position. I didn't have the arm he's got. That's for sure. But I played the position and know what it takes to do that. And that guy has done it. And he has been the guy. I'm going to lead this team. This team's not going to be denied. And that position requires a guy to do that. And he's not a vocal guy. But he leads by example. And boy, he has been, he'll tell you what, I've asked him several times quarterback-wise, you know, what's the most important thing as a quarterback? And I'm pretty sure he'll tell you that I've always said accuracy. You know, he's got great arm strength, had it last year. He's worked on his accuracy. And the throws he made have been phenomenal. He said he thought the best throw of his career was last week to Jay Shod for a five-yard out route. Wow. And it was a phenomenal throw on the sideline. And Jay Shod told it, they got us in position for a game-changing drive right there. So, it says a lot about him to make a comment about that throw versus that 50, 60 yarders that he's hitting guys with all the time. I know he's a baseball player too, but I guarantee you in baseball, he doesn't get but one sign, fastball. Because that's all he has. He throws a fastball all the time. And it's a good one. The defense from Florence has been stingy. Very stingy with points, especially. Ben, but not break, but you look up. They have really held opponents in that 20-point range in region play. That's got to make you feel good. The biggest thing we're seeing out of them is the second half. The adjustments that our coaches are making with them at halftime. You know, it's been a bend, but don't break. We hadn't given up a lot. We've probably given up a lot of yards, but not a lot of points. And then second half, when we came out, we gave up 27 yards rushing. Wow. I mean, when you stop the run, you've got a chance to win every Friday night. And especially in the second half, when we turned it on and the points started raining for us, and they just dug in. And, again, it's team. It's one side of the ball feeding off the other. They get a turnover. We feed off of that on offense, and guys go score. And then they see us score, and they feed off of it. They want to three and out and get the ball back to us, and it just becomes a frenzy and make great plays on special teams. You know, we've not – J. Shaw is going to get a lot of credit for that big touchdown they ran against J.C., the kickoff return. But there was a punt last week that went sailing over his head. It turned over. And it's 17-14. It is a game-changing catch. And he made an over-the-shoulder catch running back into our territory to catch the ball and get it back upfield for a five-yard gain. And those hidden yards, that ball could roll down to the five. Another 20 yards, yeah. And we've got it out here almost at midfield. And that's what these guys have done. They've made those type plays that nobody really realizes, boy, that was a big play. But when I saw it, it was a game-changer. Speaking with Coach Kenny Morrison of the Florence Falcons, his team tomorrow night at home against Sparkman, the Senators, the final region game of the year. It will be at Brawley Stadium. Coach, it will be for a lot. It will be for a potential region championship with a victory tomorrow night. This is what you signed up for when you signed up to play football at Florence High School. Well, I thought we talked ahead of time. We weren't going to talk about this region championship tonight. But this is it. I told the guys this week, I might have said it Friday night, about what kind of crowd this was going to be. You're getting to play at home for a region championship. What more could you ask for? And this is why you play the game. Yes. And I looked at our coaches and I said, this is why we got into coaching for games like tomorrow night. And those are fun nights. You don't get them too often. I've been in this business 32 years. And I've been involved in some big ones. And this ranks up there with them. And it's going to be a fun night for Florence and a fun night for our guys. Coach, tomorrow night as well, it will be fun for you. It will be fun for the players. It's going to be fun for the crowd as well. That's going to be a big thing tomorrow night. No doubt. And we've got to do our part to make it fun. I mean, that's the big deal. We've got to handle our end of it. We've got to come out and play well and compete and show up for the crowd. If they're going to show up for us, we better show up for them. Dual threat quarterback you face against Spartan. How do you get prepared? Well, you had a little secret weapon in your back pocket this week. You said, man, I'm going to pull somebody out here who can be that dual threat quarterback in practice. And that dual threat quarterback, he's still got it. If I could sneak him in the game tomorrow night, I'd feel real good. Coach Parker Driggers. Nothing against Kay Davis, but I like to see Parker Driggers running with the ball. Man. We didn't tackle him this week. I can tell you this. Our guys saw what the speed of the game looks like. And, boy, I'll tell you what now. I can't imagine him at Brantley in that level of football at that speed. I know how good he was at UNA. And I saw him on the field. There's nobody in that level of play that could have caught him. There were some parents that came to watch practice on Monday, and they saw him running the scout team and doing their plays. And they said, we're coming back tomorrow. And I said, oh, for practice? No, just to watch Coach Driggers run. They loved it. So, he was quite outstanding. I'm sure that's why they were coming back. I'm sure that's why they were coming back. Yeah, no doubt about it. Last thing, Coach, real quick, before tomorrow night, your opponent tomorrow night, we talked about Sparman. What do you say to your team before you go on the field? Let's just go play and have fun. Yeah. Let's get all the noise out of the way. Quit worrying about the reading championship. I've told them all week long, quit worrying about what people are talking about the playoffs. I'm so tired of hearing about what's going on in the playoffs, this scenario, that scenario, region championship. It's another game. Yeah. And it's the next one up. And it does have a lot on the line. We just got to go play and have fun. And if we don't take care of our business, you never know what happens. Coach, we wish you the best of luck tomorrow night, okay? Thank you. The head coach of the Florence Falcons is giving a big round of applause here at Lost Pizza. The voice of the Florence Falcons. A lot of Falcon fans here. A lot of Falcon players, parents, coaches. Everybody's scared around. They're excited about this weekend and the big game Friday night at Brawley Stadium between Florence and Spartan. And we're expecting a huge crowd. Make sure you get your tickets and get your popcorn ready and get there early. It's going to be a lot of fun. We have special guests join us during this hour-long show. And one of our special guests tonight is one of our sponsors for the show, but a familiar voice to Florence Falcons football as well. You hear him as our sideline colleague, Jeffrey Jones of Riverbank. Jeffrey, how are you doing, my friend? I'm doing wonderful. Great night. It's good to see you. It's sort of strange for me to see you dressed up as a banker and not as a sideline reporter. But I know you've had a long day, but I appreciate you coming in and want to talk to you a couple of things. First of all, thank you to Riverbank for being a sponsor. We have so much respect. We couldn't do this without Lost Pizza and Riverbank putting this show on for us. Tell us more about your bank and about the people there. So Riverbank is very happy to be one of the sponsors for this show and for the radio broadcast as a whole. We love giving back to the community. The 93.9, Greg Thornton, the station manager, has been very good to us. And we try to give back to the Florence City Schools as much as possible. So a little bit about Riverbank. We're the largest community bank in the state of Alabama. We've opened an office at 401 East Tennessee Street here about a block away. So I actually walk past here just about every day and about three times a month to stop in and eat. And one thing about all of our sponsors for the radio crew, we're thankful for all of them. Lost Pizza's been good to us. Garnier Pierce Auto's been good to us. But as far as what Riverbank does, we're the newest guy in town. We have a small presence, but we're going to be building a building very soon. Looking forward to that. But the best thing about it is being able to give back to the community, give back to the school, to our school system. We only have one school system in Florence, and anything we can do to help out. I get requests all the time from Dylan Burleson, from the ladies at the middle school. And my answer is rarely no to Florence Athletics. Florence High School and Florence City Schools. As you know, my wife sits as a principal at Florence, so she kind of gets on to me a little bit sometimes if I'll sponsor a luncheon for the freshman center or for the middle school. She'll call me and say, hey, no more money for them. If you're going to give me any sponsorships, you need to come to the high school. She keeps you in line is what you're saying. She does keep me in line. That's all right. There's not many people that can do that, Jeffrey Jones. I promise you that. She lets me hear about it. That's for sure. We appreciate you on the radio on 93.9 score, but we appreciate Riverbank being our sponsor here for the Florence Falcon football night at Lost Pizza. We have six shows. We'll have one coming up in the playoffs as well, so we appreciate Riverbank helping us out. One of the things I wanted to talk to you about as well is, by the way, before we get, how can people contact your bank if they need to get in touch with you? FortyTrust.com. We spell out the and. You can reach us at 768-5297 or on my cell phone. I'm not afraid to get my cell phone to read at 256-335-6533. There's fans right now. Write that number down. They'll be calling you all during the game. I'm sure they will. They do already. I get pictures of myself from the stands every night. Do any customers come into the bank and look at you and say, hey, I listen to you on Friday night. Do you have people come talk football to you during the season? A lot of, yes. The answer is yes. That's the short answer. The long answer is they don't just, they just, they come in to make fun of me or to, or give me down. To throw you a little bit? Give me down the road a little bit on something I said or something, something that might have been inaccurate. We have to remember we're on the radio. We're not a, we're not TV broadcast. We can, we can, we can fudge just a little bit. If we miss it, if we miss a number, it's okay. That's right. KJ does that quite often. I promise you that this season especially. So one of the things I want to ask you too is how much do you walk on Friday night as our sideline reporter? You go around the sideline, you go to the end zones, you come up and down the stands. Have you ever put a tracker on how much you might walk during a Friday night game? I would say it's at least 10,000 steps just from, from 5, 15, or let's see, I go down there about, I go about 6, 20. Let's start even 5 o'clock when you're picking up things all over the city for us. It's a lot. And, you know, I'll go from end zone to end zone. If Charlie Graves kicking a field goal, I'll go stand underneath the field goal, underneath the goal post. And the towering part is coming up and down those stairs at Raleigh. You know, Huntsville High, they play at Milton Frank. There's a lot of stairs there too. So I would say I go up and down probably about, on an average night, probably about six or seven times. Wow. So I get my steps in, that's for sure. But that's, my adrenaline's pumping on Friday nights. Even if I wasn't doing the radio, my adrenaline would still be pumping. Your adrenaline has been pumping this week for this game Friday night. I'm scared to say it, but yeah. Coach Morrison mentioned earlier how he's tired of hearing about the region championship. That's all I can talk about. You know, the fact of where we've come and people, I've had people call all week asking, what's going on? What's going on? I was like, well, you know, we're playing like we should. Playing like we should all along. You know, from where we started, we started all a little rough, but now we played some good teams in the beginning. Absolutely. You know, we played some real good teams and I've always been against playing these really good teams at the beginning of the year, but I think it might have helped us this year to be honest with you. no doubt about that. But I'm so proud of the Florence Falcons and where they are right now and couldn't be happier to be a Florence Falcon today. Speaking with Jeffrey Jones of Riverbank, our sideline reporter on Friday nights on 93.9 The Score. Jeffrey, real quick before I let you go, what is your favorite moment this season? Got a favorite moment, favorite game, maybe one of your games tonight was my favorite game. Well, that's definitely put me on the spot there. Well, we haven't run out of gas this year in the car on the way down. That's a good thing. I don't know, I'd say one of my favorite moments is when, this is going to be weird for me to say, but after the Austin game, I had a post-game interview with Coach Morrison and boy, it didn't go very well. Yeah, he was going to take care of business. He was a little hot. He was a little hot, so I knew it was going to happen. I tried to get out of it. We went to commercial break after the game. I said, hey guys, I don't want to do this interview. And you're like, oh, it's okay. And so I interviewed him. I got about what I thought I would out of him. And then so much so that we got in the car, I was like, watch, he's going to text me here in a minute. And he ended up calling. He said, hey man, sorry about that. It's all good. We have fun. But it was the turning point of the season. If anyone can take it, I can take it. Because if I dish it, I can take it as well. It was the turning point of the season, no doubt about it. I think when the coach said, we're going to turn this around, and the team joined in as well. And Coach Morrison joins us right quick with us. And Coach, we appreciate you allowing us to do the radio for you on the games. And Jeffrey Jones on the sideline and now a sponsor with Riverbank. But I know it's fun to be the largest school in Northwest Alabama and to have the largest broadcasting radio station to take care of it. That's pretty special. Here, get you turned on. Here we go. How about now? Now we're good. Yes. It's very special. And thanks to Jeffrey and Riverbank for sponsoring this. This has been a great deal here at Lost Pizza. Something we've talked about for a lot of years. And we're able to pull it off this year. Appreciate Greg Thornton for helping us do this as well. But yeah, to have y'all to do what y'all do, there's nobody better in the business. I mean, we've played three Thursday night games so far, so we get to hear a lot of Friday night stuff. Nobody compares. Y'all are over the top. Everybody brags about what y'all do. And of course, y'all do stick Jeffrey with the worst job ever to have to interview me before. Usually before goes a lot better than after. I will say this. You're way easier to interview them than some coaches in the past. I won't name any names. I appreciate that. I try to be. But yeah, I saw the look in your eye that you looked at me like I don't really want to do this at Austin. but they're making me do it kind of deal. But that was a bad one and I felt bad when I got going back on the bus. I said, I got to call him. I got to apologize for that. It was pretty rough. I told them you were going to do that too. Yeah. That's good. You knew me enough to do that. That's good. And the thing is, I don't blame you. I knew exactly what you were doing. You didn't want to do the interview either. Actually, because what he was doing, he was doing a pre-script for what was about to happen in the locker room. Well, I was about to say it went better for him than it did for them in the locker room. I hope he took some out on me before he got in the locker room. You got a little smidge into what they got. It was pretty bad. And again, maybe the turning point of the season. Well, Jeffrey, we appreciate you in Riverbank. Absolutely. Thank you so much. And folks, look on Friday night, he'll be down there on the sideline walking up and down to the sideline, staying out of the way, appreciate you JJ and appreciate all that you do and appreciate Riverbank as well. Let's hear it for Jeffrey Jones of Riverbank. Thanking him for all that he does. You're listening to the Florence Falcons football night at Lost Pizza. We're back after this time out. Welcome back to Florence Falcons football night here at Lost Pizza. Kevin Johnson with you, an hour-long show here, and a lot of Falcon fans in the house getting ready for the big ball game Friday night, which will be at Brawley Stadium as the Falcons host the Spartan Senators. We expect a large crowd for that one at Brawley Stadium. Joined now by the assistant coach of the Florence Falcons. Would y'all help me give a nice warm welcome to Coach Nathan Sawyer here joining us here tonight for the radio show. And Coach, how are you doing? Pretty good. I like to say it. We're doing well. We're doing well. If I run the sound system better, we're doing pretty good here. Let's talk about what is your position that you coach and how many years have you been at Florence? I'm the tight ends H-backs coach and this is my fourth year. I came in with Coach Morrison in his first year. So you came in with Coach Morrison and said let's go together. Did y'all know each other before this time? We did not. We did not. We had a mutual friend and got connected and there you go. That's how I had things happen sometimes. Well, that's pretty neat. You know, one of the things you coach H-backs and tight ends, talk about your group, how they have meshed and how they've gelled and really how they've grown this season. Well, I've got two seniors in my group with the Sean Shepard and Rhett Wilburn and let me tell you, I couldn't ask for two better kids. I mean, students, young guys, they're great. Shep has always been, I mean, this year he's just like clockwork and you depend on him and Rhett really stepped up. We've had to play Rhett previously on defense, offense, back and forth. He filled in that tight end slot when needed a guy and he has taken it and went with it and at no point am I worried if we go 12 personnel and putting both of them out there. I love it. That's what I always want to be in is 12 personnel. That's a tight end coach right there, 12 personnel and that means two tights and it's going to be pretty neat to see that as well as we speak with Nathan Sawyer, assistant coach here at Florence High School and you not only do that as far as coaching those but you also have some game ops that you do throughout the week and at night. You have a lot of hats that you wear during the week. Dragonfly, huddle, what else do you want to talk about? I don't know. Radio crew, radio crew, TV crews. Sideline stuff, setting up all the stuff on the sidelines so it's a million things I think so I don't know. I just, usually don't talk to me on game day because there's no telling what I'll say. But is that something you enjoy though? You enjoy that side of it sometimes too? I do when everything works the way it's supposed to work because when it doesn't it's automatically my fault. Sure. And that's part of the game ops thing. We understand that too. We appreciate all the job you did and that's a big important part of the job as well and you know on a game night you know you've got a lot of things going on. What are your responsibilities on a game night before you even get to go coach the game? What are some responsibilities you have on Friday night? Well we usually get there Coach Driggers and Coach Denton and I will get there early. We set up Sky Coach which is our, so we can watch film on the sideline. We also, that's, I mean make sure all that stuff's connected and hooked up and running correctly and finding space. You know I always try to check in with you guys to make sure you are going to be. We always give the visitors or if we're away our roster and it's just, I mean, I don't know. If I get to get down there in pre-game that means everything's went good. That's a good sign. So if you don't see me in pre-game you know I'm somewhere doing something that something's messed up. If you don't see coach on the sideline coaching during warm-ups say a prayer. That's what he was saying with Coach Nathan Sawyer assistant coach here at Florence High School and coach, what have you seen in this team as a whole this season as an assistant coach looking from just sort of step back and look at this team? The biggest thing that I've seen from the beginning to now is they really came together as a group. I mean it's almost like something just started gelling with them and it was the no quit it's not going to be us we're going to change this stuff and listen they've bought in but you know I've heard Coach Morrison talk about it. We've talked about a culture for four years with them. I mean it's every day we talk about a culture and these guys have really they've bought in and we've had some seniors step up and be some great leaders just I mean just phenomenal I see them doing stuff that I never would have seen them do in the past just like you know when kids come off the field talking them up getting kids in the locker room just doing you know trying to lead these younger ones of how it needs to be and your family is involved in Florence High School from top to bottom too so all the family part of it talk about that it's pretty special to have everyone wearing the blue my oldest is the guy flying the drone usually sitting in the end zone somewhere he flies the drone does all the film and him and Sam Myers does that then my youngest actually is a freshman he's on the freshman team and wants to be a long snapper so he's been working with Coach Cobb so he comes up and travels with us and wants to be a long snapper hopefully go to that next level sometime doing that but he enjoys it and of course my wife Coach's wife you can never can't say enough about them they are the ones that holds the glue together she had never admitted but she's one of the ones behind the program taking care of that and that's a that's a whole different world in our house during that time Coach Nathan Sawyer of the Florence Falcons and Coach before I let you go what has Coach Kenny Marson meant to this program it's been pretty special watching this season how things have worked well it's you can tell he loves this place and he loves these kids this is his home and you can tell how much it means to him he wants to see it do well he wants to see him you know Florence do great things and you know somebody said a long time ago Florence if you've got the right guy then watch out for him well they got the right guy they got a guy that cares they got a guy that's going to have our kids do right and he's the guy I agree we'll pull him in here Coach Marson come and put him on the headset and join us here Coach you know you've got great staff and Nathan Sawyer coming in with you for the past four years he's a behind the scenes guy that does so much it means a lot to the program yeah if I can not get choked up over here he brought tears to my eyes right there I appreciate him saying that it does mean a lot to be the head coach here in my hometown but I can't do it without these guys around me and my job comes down to hiring the right people and getting the right piece of the puzzle in place and I've hired some really good folks one thing I feel like I've done is I've hired really good folks and we've had some guys leave along the way for various reasons and it just seems like the puzzle fit this year and everything fell into place I think these players see it the players love the guys we've got in place and I told somebody early on I think that Georgia steak dinner we did at the beginning of the year if I got anything right I got the staff room right and if we didn't get that right we weren't going to get anything else right and so I appreciate these guys and Coach Sarger what he does behind the scenes yes and what he didn't say is when he goes missing it's not that he goes missing because it's not necessarily working it's missing because he's hiding from me he doesn't want to come tell me something's not working he tries to I think he goes through the other coaches to gauge my mood before he comes and tells me that it's not working on the sideline because he knows it's not going to be pretty so we've gone through a couple of stints with Sky Coach our sideline stuff and it's not his fault but I sure do make it about his fault when it's not working everybody has a responsibility we get it I'm going to give a shout out again to his wife over here she did our media guide program and he was saying during that time it's a difficult time in their home I'm sure because she was having to deal with me as well and all the people in this community to put that thing together it is a major ordeal Christy Dixon did it for three years and passed it off to her to Leslie Sawyer and thank you Leslie for what you did for me to get that thing going that is the hardest job there is period and she did a great job with it and proud of how that turned out we appreciate it and coach thank you for being our guest today let's hear for coach Nathan Sawyer the assistant coach of the Florence Falcons here at Los Pizza we appreciate him being with us tonight appreciate him coming and being our guest before we go to break tonight as we go to our break 93-9 the home we're so glad that they can listen to the Florence Falcons during football season anywhere around the world we're joined now by another assistant coach for Florence High School the kicking coach for Florence High School coach Nathan Cobb let's give him a round of applause as we welcome him in here tonight coach how you doing doing well how about you we're doing well man you know kicking coach you're a man after my own heart I was the kicking coach years ago when I first came on as chaplain they said to me they said do you know anything about kickers I said I know zero about kickers they said good you're the kicking coach and that's where it all started you were much better at this than I was I promise you that but I love seeing the progress of kickers in this school it's been pretty neat to see over the years and right now you've got a couple of good ones let's talk about your kickers and your punter absolutely so starting off on field goals I've got Charlie Graves he had he knew he had big shoes to fill with Chandler Dixon last year and he's really filled those shoes I've got Parker Greenhall on kickoff and he has come in as a young guy and he's done really well puts the ball where we ask him to put it and he's really doing a good job Steven Sivananda he has been gradually improved or he gradually improved last year and then this year he's really taken off and you know any time I tell him hey you got to put it over here you got to put it over here you got a good returner he is always listening and trying to get better and he's really taken off so there's really some good kickers right there and this started with a long line of kickers as a matter of fact I hate to bring this up but I think didn't you have the school record for the longest field bill at one time I did 48 yards my junior year 2016 2017 and Chandler Dixon broke that three times last year three times Chandler Dixon broke that last year and by the way just a side note I think Chandler Dixon may he were now at University of North Alabama may be out there kicking a little bit this weekend too so congratulations to him making a good job as a true freshman your time as a kicker does that help you a lot to understand what these guys are going through a specialist people don't understand it's just a different group and you have to work with them differently oh yeah I hate to call him out but I'm going to you know Charlie had a had a rough week with Grissom missed two PATs came back and hit a 42 yarder last week against Huntsville he he just couldn't hit the ball the way that he knows he can right and so you know we got in Monday and you know I looked at him and watched what he was doing and then we got in and filmed it Tuesday and went out and made adjustments yesterday and yesterday and today he's been booming the ball I mean it is coming off his foot like it's never come off his foot before almost like a golf swing absolutely very similar and you have to tweak it that that's what people don't realize there's so much to it it's not just go kick a ball there's so much more to it isn't it and they have to think about that as we speak with Nathan Cobb who's the assistant coach for the Florence high school and does the specialty with the kickers and specialties in there have to have a good long snapper too mr. handbacks pretty good we got a great long snapper that he's a kid that knows his craft yeah and sometimes I have to remind him that he still has to warm up as I'm looking at him and he knows exactly what I'm talking about yeah he he knows exactly what he's doing if he if he's got a bad snapper if it's low he knows immediately and he he knows how to fix it he knows how to make the correction and go out and make another good snap so as we speak with Nathan Cobb the kicking coach for Florence high school I wanted to ask you too do you have conversations ongoing with your kickers during the game absolutely all right if it comes down to a game-winning kick or game-tying kick do you talk to your kicker do you let him say it over there by himself what's your call on it last year with Charlie or with Chandler I went up to him I said just do you yeah and it's been the same thing with Charlie I just go tell him kick your best ball I think I exactly exactly what I say I said don't leave it total quiet just go say hey just be yourself make the kick into it and we've had some good ones over the years and right now our kicking program is as good as it's been in a long time and I mean I know as a former player and now as a coach is it pretty cool to see where the team has come this year absolutely you know last year we didn't get the results where we wanted and you know this year it started out rough and you know it's it's been great to see the guys come together and play as a team and play for each other I agree with that as well I'm gonna bring coach Kenny Marson in real quick if you can just to get his headset on here just to say a word coach when you have a kicker a former kicker come in to be your kicking coach and put all the time and effort into it it really helps your program that's a big part of the game when I don't have to worry about it and it's all him I put the trust in him it it makes it a lot easier for the head coach yeah it's a special teams not not that we are trying to ignore those guys but there's so much more so much stuff going on in practice they are so valuable to this team to not have a guy that is with them full-time especially at the 7a level it it's a major deal to have our specialties specialist guys taken care of and they get neglected a lot and he's right there with them the whole time I think sometimes they feel like they're not not in not part of practice or they're not or they're not part of the team they're kind of in their own little world but love what he does awesome with those guys and I couldn't fix it I mean I've watched a lot of kicking in my day I was I was a holder in high school and so that's kind of I'll watch the holder so I see kind of plant foot and say I saw Charlie with a with a step and a reach today is about the best I could see that look like he really reached for the ball I don't know how to fix it but get closer to the ball but it sticks down that's why you have a kicking coach that's why you got a kicking coach well coach we wish you the best of luck this weekend and looking forward to the game Friday night let's hear it for coach Nathan Cobb the kicking coach for Florence High School here tonight lost pizza our host Florence Falcon football night but most people will be listening on their phones in the stadium because they're going to be there the city of Florence is excited about this one because they're looking forward to watching the Falcons and the Senators tomorrow night we're joined by a couple of these Falcons seniors as well guys would y'all help me welcome Marquise Andrews and Blake Hanback two of our great players here for Florence high school appreciate you guys being here with us and guys let's first find out Marquise what position do you play and what number do you wear I wear number 22 I play a little bit of fullback and running back all right fullback running back where's number 22 and Blake I'm number 50 and I play long snapper all right 50 long snapper so we got a running back and each back there and got a fullback and then we've got the long snapper so let's talk about a couple things and Blake I'll start with you what what got you into becoming a long snapper well in in middle school I played center seventh and eighth grade and eighth grade we could do special teams and they said we need a long snapper and I played center so it was just all right I'll do long snapping yeah and then when I came in the ninth grade I played center all the way up until right before the first game and they said we still don't have a long snapper so I tried out and I could do it and then I just kept doing it I never went back to center and I just kept kept long snapping have you realized how many great long snappers have played for Florence high school I was like there's a couple of good ones that had great careers after this as well I've heard a few times a few times I'm sure you've heard about a couple trust me if they were around they would tell you too I know those guys they're good ones how does it feel for your team to be win four in a row it feels great you know we start off the season not too hot but after that senior meeting that they talked about earlier it's it's really special and same type of thing happened my freshman year when we we awesome game we had a come to Jesus meeting at halftime and since that moment we have just popped them all off and it's been great let's meet our other senior with us by the way Marquise Andrews Marquise as a senior what's it been like this season this season so what's it been like for you as a senior as a senior this season hasn't started off really great but we really had a moment where we came together and fall as a team and won four in a row and just ready to win this next one I'm gonna let you pull your microphone a little closer to your mouth there you go because you're a soft-spoken senior here I like that Marquise now let me ask you a question what play call gets you excited when they call a certain play what's that number what's that place that oh I like this play when that play comes into the to the huddle I would have to say rhino rhino okay that means you're gonna be involved in that correct yes sir all right that's right I like to hear rhino so when rhino comes you know all right this is where I get involved in it as we speak with Marquise Andrews I want to ask you Marquise though if you could play another position what position would you play I would try outside linebacker outside linebacker I like that I could buy an outside linebacker out of you Blake came back as well with us a long snapper Blake I want to ask you a question let's let's talk about this for a minute what are the main things you want to do as a long snapper before you go out and snap the line it's a little more to it I mean there's a lot to it what do you what are you thinking in your mind before a snap I kind of just think it's it's gonna go all right yeah sometimes right before game I'll be nervous I'll it you get in your head but as long as you know before you got to snap that you're gonna snap the ball good it hasn't gone bad for me yet so I'll just keep doing that I used to tell the long snappers aim small miss small you know always aim at that belt buckle and don't miss much from that belt buckle and you'll be okay you've done an excellent job the past couple years and we're glad to see how well you've done and Marquis you as well and I want to ask Marquis is there anybody listening tonight you want to give a shout out to say hi to I would like to say hi to my mother oh that's awesome love that that's great what about you Blake I'd like to say hi to my Nana I'm listening say hi to your Nana I like that so I like you guys doing it any plans after high school what's your plans after high school Marquis I will I got accepted into Lincoln Tech wow okay so Lincoln Tech so you want to go to the tech side of it do you have anything specific you're hoping to get into automotive and diesel technician nice that is tremendous yo man I know you'll do well in that congratulations on that Blake what about you right now the plan is just to stay at home and go to UNA but things can change you never know what'll come my way all right would y'all would y'all give it a chance to play football at another level if you could yeah they nod their heads they said okay we could do that all right before I let you go I want to ask you this what has it been like to see the excitement this week at the school I'll start with Blake the excitement at the school about this week it's uh it's nice that people are caring about us it's nice to feel supported and it's nice that you know at the beginning of the year you heard some talk around the school like hey this season's not going to go good but once we've started to prove them wrong and they know now that we're we're going to do good and they believe in us well said Marquis what's it been like at school this week any teachers brought up the game this week to you uh yes ma'am um any which which ones you got what's some teachers you had that you've talked to maybe uh miss Cruz all right miss Cruz okay all right that's good so miss Cruz let's help you out a little bit I will give her a shout out as well all right well guys we're excited about y'all for tomorrow night and we're excited for you as seniors what a great career y'all have had both of you but it's not finished yet we got more football to play let's stick with it and uh before I go gonna get a go falcons on the count of three one two three go falcons that's from Blake handback marquise andrews let's give them a round of applause they did a great job tonight here on 93.9 the score a couple of our seniors continue to show what this Florence high school football team interviewing coaches and players man i impressed with blake handback and marquise andrews those two seniors young fine young men coach kenny marson with me coach i know you're excited about teams winning teams playing well but when you see young men carry themselves that way that means even more oh no question uh this whole senior class cross the board i mean they they have been phenomenal this year really to be honest this team wow i mean uh we've got 85 guys uh these guys are bought in and in this next senior class that are juniors uh uh coming up really excited about them and uh they they've been bought in since middle school and uh talented bunch and we're really excited about them as well last friday night florence went on the road knocked off huntsville win the game 45 to 29 to go to five and one and reach and play and get ready to face spartman tomorrow night and coach last week during that game your team uh starts to pull away late it's about a minute to go in the game and then the word gets to the sideline and to you from uh maybe our our good friend down there uh jeffrey jones that james clements had bought upset austin you said all year any time any team in this region could beat anyone on any given night no no doubt about it it's uh you know throw us in a throw us in a hat pull it out it could be anybody and that's what it's been uh and it's what it could be we hope it don't get down to that with us in the middle of all that but uh we as long as we take care of business we'll stay out of that old tiebreaker mess and uh we'll be sitting at first and playing at home yeah we're not even going to think about that we're going to take care of business tomorrow night at brawley stadium the florence falcons coach brawley stadium you played there you've coached there and tomorrow night boy it would be nice to have the city of florence to be there they're going to show yeah they there's no doubt i i've i've said it throughout the year i said it last year i i finished up the year pretty ugly last year about our attendance and showing up for these guys and it has not been that this year they they have showed up our our gates with hillcrest were the start the year was you know fifteen thousand dollar gate and a thirty three thousand dollar gate against muscle shows then a seventeen thousand dollar gate against bob jones for homecoming just every week they've been there and travel i mean i look up on the way games and it's full and the coaches that we play are are excited to play us because of the people we bring for them because they know they got to pay bills too so uh it's uh i appreciate the florence family is florence community supporting us supporting me with this stat with this uh with this team and uh we're excited it's something special is going on at florence i've said it every radio show i've been on uh admin have got it going in the right direction in those hallways uh it's just it's something different about our coaches across the board and every sport all on the same page preaching the same thing uh it's it's something special right now at florence people say sometimes that a team like florence has caught some some great breaks throughout this uh four game winning streak but i've seen you make breaks happen your kids have made things happen jay shot pearson one of those great plays on the side on last week was just one example of that your team seems to make those things happen yeah i mean i i'd be i'd be afraid to start saying names i mean you know jay nires will pick jacqueline jones at corner wow two phenomenal picks this year at the right time uh just guys making plays just over nelson elliot on on a big play over there on the sideline on the kickoff return uh for a ball that could have got away from us to them and uh the first time they tried to squib one over there to him great play by him just unsung heroes too just just making plays over and over you know marquis andrews just here on the radio uh doesn't get a tremendous amount throughout the game but when he does he makes them count uh we've asked you to play d-line fullback h-back uh and tailback now filling in for guys that's been injured blake hand back is uh started since a freshman every single game since a freshman without a bad snap either long snap or short snap to be able to do both at the level that he's at that he does it at when he's when he's worried about snapping a ball so the laces are turned the right way we're talking neil inhibits stuff and neilin's worked with him as as well on that of when he snaps it to the quarterback on uh to hold for the field goal the quarterback doesn't have to turn the laces he's trying to get the laces set in his hands that's when you get down to that that's phenomenal uh when you've got guys like that that are taking care of their side of it speaking with coach kenny morrison the florence falcons coach we've got about one minute and that's time what's the key for your team tomorrow night against this really good smartman team hold on to the football uh block tackle it's just old school football yeah you know the team that stops the run uh and then you know stays in coverage when they break down and they start scrambling and we lock down on we worked it all week locking down that's why coach triggers was a quarterback because their guy can scramble and uh and we tend we tend to lose our receivers sometimes and he'd throw one up he'd throw it a country mile on the run so we got to lock those guys down in space and get to him we've got spies all over him so our coaches have done a great job putting a game plan together on both sides of the ball excited about what we're we're rolling in with tomorrow night and uh let's go play and have fun all right falcon fans bring the cowbells bring the shakers bring the noise bring the atmosphere bring it all to brawley stadium let's be the 12th man for this florence falcons team they take on sparkman tomorrow night brawley stadium are you ready florence fans they're here they're excited about it that's for sure thank you to all our guests tonight we appreciate everyone being with us we want to say a big thank you to lost pizza for taking care of us tonight to riverbank and jeffrey jones as well don't forget tomorrow night's game you'll hear right here on 93 nine the score for our
