[0:00] Back here at Traditions Bank Arena, campus of Wallace State, Hansville. Kevin Johnson, glad to be with you as the Florence Falcons, Lady Falcons that is, will get game 25 started here in just a few minutes of this Northwest Regional Tournament. We start 7A action today and the Lady Falcons getting ready to take on the Patriots of Hillcrest from Tuscaloosa. It's funny that Florence and Hillcrest had really never met a whole lot in sports. And Florence scheduled them in football, played them twice in football, ended up playing them in basketball in men's last year.
Florence men knocked them off in the Elite 8 on the right to the state championship game. The Lady Falcons played Hillcrest last year in the Sweet 16 and faced them again today. So, for two teams that are so far away, they have faced in basketball and football quite a bit. We're getting to know them quite well and they get to know the Florence Falcons as well. Coach Blair Woods doesn't do it by herself. She has great assistants. Mark Quinn, Russell, Craig Nelson, Lakin Coleman and Jada Hughes are the assistant coaches.
And that staff has done a tremendous job for the Lady Falcons. It will be the road team. While I have a moment, too, I want to say congratulations to, from what I believe is the first team in the history of Florence Athletics to be ranked in state rankings as number one. I may be wrong about that, but the Florence soccer boys are now the number one ranked team in the state. Coach Glenn Harshide and his Falcons went 3-0 in a prestigious tournament early on and then turned around.
And they will play this, I think, tonight even at home against Athens. So, congratulations to Florence soccer. Early start. I know early rankings don't mean much, but it is nice to be recognized as the top team in the state of Alabama in Class 7A. Both teams go to their benches. Starting lineups will be just around the corner. We'll see how they do that here at Wallace State-Handsville. By the way, Coach Blair Woods, she has taken the lead of also maybe Coach Dylan Burleson, the boys coach.
Her spouse is the bookkeeper as well, if I'm not mistaken. So, that is good for both of them to do that. So, it should be a fun game today. It should be an exciting game and a really competitive game early on here at Wallace State between Florence and Hillcrest. Hillcrest also a senior-laden team as well. Let's take a three-minute timeout. We come back. More from Wallace State-Handsville. Irons Electric has been family-owned and operated for 65 years. Kevin Johnson on the call this morning for this 7-8 girls game between Florence and Hillcrest. As it is the Sweet 16.
16 teams left in the state of Alabama. One team will be taking home the blue map for the state championship next week in Birmingham, Alabama. Actually, two weeks in Birmingham, Alabama. I love what they do here today. First of all, let's meet our visitors for today's contest at Florence Falcons. They introduce all the players in the Sweet 16 round. So all players will be introduced first for the Florence Falcons. McKenzie Rivera will get recognized. Ruby Churchill will get recognized. One of the subs. Keneesh Thurkiel, not dressed today.
[5:34] Diamond Chandler will play some, obviously. Kansas Doxey will get recognized. And Thomas as well. Myla Thomas. Here's the starting lineup for the Florence Falcons. Starting Jordan Ricks, 5'8", sophomore, plays point guard, will get the start. She'll be joined by Brene Jones, the 5'6", senior, who's been here before. Journey Hawkins, she is outstanding. 5'9", only a freshman in all kinds of potential in her future. Charlie Weatherford, the three-point specialist, 5'5", senior, will get the start. She'll wear number four. And last but not least, Trinity McCroskey, the 5'7", senior, will get the start.
So it'll be McCroskey, Weatherford, Hawkins, Jones, and Ricks, for Coach Blair Woods, Florence Falcons, who actually has a couple of eighth graders on the bench, which I like as well. Myla Thomas, Kenzie Doxey will be eighth graders on the bench, along with Kenzie Rivera. So three eighth graders on the bench for Florence, and you've got a ninth grader starting. So I would say the future's pretty bright for this Florence Falcons team, and Coach Blair Woods is doing it right, that's for sure. Here's the starting lineup for the Hillcrest Patriots.
Sky Latham, a 5'7", junior, will get the start. She'll wear number zero for Coach Jessica McBrayer's Patriots. Jaden Davis-Hines will get the start, the junior, 5'8". Where's number two, good inside player. Kalia Blake will get the start. She is a 5'6", senior, she'll wear number three. Madison Ivey-Didell. She'll get the start, wear number 13, a senior. And then their star player is Blakely Nixon. She's a 5'9", senior. She is going to be trouble for the Falcons, trust me. She can play, she was trouble last year. Officials from across the state of Alabama, are you ready for basketball and breakfast?
Get that second cup of coffee going and get ready for what should be a good matchup today. It's time for the ladies in the largest classification, the final ever 7A girls tournament being played this year as we go to different classifications next year. So Florence will be a part of it. The Sweet 16 going left to right. We're in the black uniforms with Florence across the chest, blue trim on the side, white lettering, white numbers. It'll be jumping center for Florence. They'll jump against Lake of the Patriots who are wearing the white with a lot of red pats across the front of the jersey.
And it's going to be Weatherford for Florence controlling the tip. Weatherford in front court, gets it down, and they're going to call a back court call. And I don't know, they reversed that. So both teams got confused. Florence went one way, and then the referees didn't realize it. Florence got it on one end of the court, went the wrong way because everybody ran that way. Then they come back this way, and the next thing you know, the referee says, hey, I missed the call. He reversed it.
It's the right call. He did it right. It was just early morning. Everybody just woke up on the court. So welcome to early morning basketball. It'll be Hillcrest basketball going right to left. Florence opens up the zone of journey. Hawkins, excuse me, Hawkins almost got the steal. They go inside, though. Ball knocked away, and Hawkins with the steal this time. Quick hands at 5'9", and run the point. She wears those black goggles. Hensi dribbled. Can't get there. Kicks it back out. Swings around to Jones. Back to Hawkins.
Now the Patriots will pick up man-to-man. Left-handed dribble by Hawkins. Now goes to the left side, and she's fouled. Reach-in foul right there by Latham. She'll pick up her first right in front of the Patriots head coach, Jessica McBrayer. First foul of the game, 725, no score. Everybody going the right direction now. I'll tell you a story about that later on when we get a break that Florence did years ago that was one of the coolest things ever. Jones has it. Excuse me now. Ricks has it.
Back out to Hawkins. Hawkins on the left wing looking for a screen. Can't get it. Dribbles down to the corner. Comes back up to the top. Gets a switch. Ball knocked away. She's double-teamed. Ball on the floor. Taken away by the Patriots, but they were on the sideline. Going to go back to Florence. So you see what the Patriots like to do. They'll come and double, and Florence right now having trouble getting into their offense, and two players having to tie their shoes. One for the Patriots, one for the Falcons.
[10:34] Like I said, early morning start. Still tying shoes. Still going the right direction. We'll see what happens here. Renee Jones will inbound it on the sideline. Florence late getting into their breaks. Got to hurry up. Finally get it inbounds. That's to McCroskey. McCroskey at the free throw line. Trying to spin down. Kicked it back out. Good hard move to the basket. Layup and good for Ricks. Jordan Ricks goes up and lays it in. And Florence takes an early lead. Good lead, 2-0. Nice, strong move to the left.
Florence picks up man-to-man. Left wing. Taking it with left. No good. Rebound. Dowell couldn't make the shot. And here come the Falcons with it. Hawkins over to Ricks. Ricks goes strong. The basket lost it off a foot that time. Turnover, Florence. So early jitters, early wake-ups. But Florence leads it 2-0. It's 6-39 to go here in quarter number one of this sweet 16 matchup. Sky Latham running the point. Where's the white headband and the red sneakers? We're bringing up the floor for the Patriots. Picked up by Hawkins on the wing.
Depth could be a factor in this game. D-3 up by Dowell. No good. Rebound backs it out and Florence has it. Hawkins wants to run. Gets across midcourt and she's knocked down. They're going to stay last touch though by the Patriots. A reach-in foul possibly there on Davis-Hines. But instead it'll stay with Florence. Hawkins says, well, that's not a foul. The ref said, well, I gave you the ball back. It's fair. It was a good conversation. It was right in front of me. That's exactly what he said.
Inbounds pass to Ricks for Florence. Leading it 2-0 at the top of the key. Ricks surveys traffic. Goes to the left of Hawkins. Hawkins can't get by her man. Looks and bounced back door. Got it to Ricks. Float her up. No good. Ricks got her own rebound. Put it up. Put it in. She has all four points and Florence leads it 4-0 early on. So, not too much jitters here for Florence. Driving hard at the basket. Shot up. No good. Rebound. Taken down by Florence. It's Weatherford.
Weatherford double-teamed in backcourt. Keeps her drill alive. Gets rid of it to Hawkins. And a jump ball. Call. Possession. That will go to the Patriots. And that, again, is Nixon. Blakely Nixon is going to be a problem. She come in from behind. Got the tie up. And it will be with the Patriots. So, early turnovers hurting Florence. Watch for these inbounds plays underneath the basket. Have to go up top. Good defense for Florence there. Dowdell has it. Dowdell picked up there by Jones. Jones staying with it way up top.
Dowdell will go to the right. Hands it off. Into the lane. Trying to spin against Falcons. Put up a shot and rolled out. No good. Rebound. Great. Box out. Taken by Ricks. She's been outstanding. Ricks blows by one player. Hesitation blows by another. Put it up. Wouldn't go. She did everything right but couldn't get it to fall. Rebound Patriots. They look to run. Crossover dribbling of beauty. Layup. Put up on the other end. Too strong. Rebound taken by Florence. Latham went coast to coast but couldn't get the basket.
And Florence gets it. Passed down the court. Last touch by the Patriots. It'll stay with Florence. A smart, heady play there by Renee Jones. That ball went off a Patriots player. And she wanted to retrieve it and realized, I don't have to. My teammates can come help me. Florence leads it 4-0. 5-0-9 to go in the first. Hawkins gets it inbounds. Gets it right back. Floater in the lane. Off the glass. Put it in. What a start for Florence. They're leading it 6-0 early on.
Confident with the offensive game. Latham front court for the Patriots. Latham hesitation. Can't get rid of it. Finally does. Valdell has it on the wing. Valdell wants to get it out to Lake. Lake will have it. Guarded by Weatheridge. She has to go inside. Threw it away. Good defense by the Falcons. Again, forcing the turnover. And substitutions coming in for the Patriots. They'll bring in Smith and McBrayer. McBrayer, I believe, is the daughter of Jessica McBrayer, if I'm not mistaken. I'll double-check that. Florence leads it 6-0.
And the Falcons have the basketball going left to right as Journey Hawkins will bring it up the floor. The winner goes to the Elite Eight Tuesday morning, 9 a.m. Hawkins gets rid of it. Ricks has it top of the key. She has four. The Falcons' six here early on. Double-team picks up the dribble. Strong with the basketball. And a whistle and a foul. That's a great job by Ricks, who kept moving. She didn't just stand there. She kept moving. The basketball, she didn't pull her elbows out.
She kept going up and down with it and drew the contact. That foul will be called on Davis-Hines, her first. Team second in the quarter. Hawkins to get it in balance. And Ricks had it poked away and stolen. That's a good steal, but a great job on the other end. Should have been a jump ball, but it will be saved by Smith. Here come the Patriots with it. Look to get it up the floor. Knocked away. Retrieved there. Watch out. Now Nixon has it. She's a player.
[15:40] She wants to go one-on-one against McCroskey. Has to get rid of it. Good defense by McCroskey. Late now. Hounded by Hawkins. Boy, she's having trouble with it. Finally gets it over here to the wing. Driving, spinning in the lane. Smith can't do anything but in the lane. Nixon put it up. Missed it. No good. Rebound. Knocked out of bounds. Last touch by the Patriots. It's baseball season starting yesterday for high school baseball, but right now the Lady Falcons are throwing a no-hitter. Six to zero. 348 to go here in the first.
Full-court press. Hawkins back to Ricks. And look at Ricks bringing up the floor. Crosses over, dribble to the side. Gets it to McCroskey. McCroskey lost it. Got it back. Ricks in the corner. Swings it all the way up top to Hawkins. Hawkins says, let's settle down. The ninth grader. Freshman spin in the lane. Floater. Teardrop. Good. Oh, my goodness. Has Florence come out on fire. They lead it eight to zero. Patriots up the floor on the right wing. Up top to Nixon. Nixon thought about the three.
She is a great shooter. Gets the screen. Goes to the left side then. Florence good defense again. Great help. No good on the shot. Here comes Florence. Ricks with it. Ricks down the floor to Weatherford. Three ball on the way. Why not? She knocks it down. Should have been a foul too. Timeout, Patriots. It's all Falcons. And listen to the folks from the Renaissance City. Florence leads it 11-0. 3-0-1 to go. Falcon basketball in the Northwest Regional Tournament. Back in 30. Rogersville, Alabama. Back here at Traditions Bank Arena. Kevin Johnson with 3-0-1 to go in the first quarter. The 7-8 Girl Sweet 16 matchup. And you hear the crowd behind me saying, here we go, Falcons, because they are awake.
This Falcon, Lady Falcon team has come out on fire. 11-0. Weatherford's three, forced a timeout. Hawkins and Ricks have four each. Deep three by Nixon trying to answer, and she finally does. That's what she can do. Blakely Nixon gets the Patriots on the board at the three-minute, under the three-minute mark. Full-court press. That's what they want to do, score and get into the press. Hawkins breaks it, but it's stolen away. McBrayer has it up the floor. Crossover dribble of beauty. Layup, up and good. That's Kuhn who come up with that one.
She didn't decline. Cline made that one. 11-5, so a 5-0 run. Ernell Hawkins, wide open. Three ball on the way. Banked in and out. Wouldn't go. Rebound taken down by Smith of Hillcrest. She gets it to Nixon at the right wing. Gets the two-man game. She wanted to take the NBA three and said goes inside to Smith. Got a shot. Put it up. Put it in. 7-0 run, just like that. The timeout changed everything. And in one minute, an 11-0 lead has been erased to 11-7.
Welcome to 7A basketball. Hawkins into the lane. Found a step. Laid it up. Off balance. Wouldn't go. That thing hung on the rim. Rebound taken down by Davis Hines of the Patriots. They look to run. A chance to cut it to two or even one. Nixon has it top of the key. Guarded by Ricks. Ricks is going to have her hands full today. Trying to get the switch. She goes inside. Nixon's fouled. She'll go to the line to shoot two. She is a very athletic player.
Not necessarily the tallest player. She does go, I believe, listed. Nixon at, we'll say, 5'9". So, she was right at 5'9". Maybe 5'8 to 5'9". But she is very athletic. First free throw. Got it. And she shoots the ball extremely well. First time in the game, Diamond Chandler will come in. Give a breather to Jones Florence. A little short on the bench. So, I think that'll be one thing that Blair Woods is going to have to mix and match that bench. Second free throw in and out.
No good. Rebound. Last touch by Florence. Chandler couldn't bring it in. A little pressure over the top from Klein. And Klein forced that one. So, Patriots get it back. In pounds pass. The beauty laid it up. Put it in. Just like that. A 9-0 run. As Davis hides answers. And the Patriots woke up after that timeout. It's 11-10. Handshake there. No call. Hawkins down the floor. Kicked it out to Ricks. Ricks goes to the left side. Pull up from 8. Roll in and out. No good. Smith gets the rebound.
[20:53] Smith off the bench is being absolutely big for this Patriots team. Third kill. Excuse me. Nixon has it now. Guarded by McCroskey. Left wing with it. That's Klein. Klein into the paint. Spins. A pretty move. Blocked. Shot by Hawkins. But Klein got it back. Klein will bring it all the way back outside the three-point arc. Trying to go baseline. Great help defense because she kicked it out to Smith. Smith spinning in the lane. Ball on the floor. Great defense there by McCroskey. And the jump ball.
Possession arrow will go to Florence with 37 seconds to go in the quarter. Give a lot of credit there to Trinity McCroskey. He came on the back side to help out. And multiple substitutions in the last 37 seconds. Three substitutions for Coach McBrayer and the Hillcrest Patriots. And this is where depth may play a factor. Florence led it 11-0. But Hillcrest on a 10-0 run has cut it to 11-10. Hawkins will bring it up the floor and see if Blair Woods says play for the last shot if he can.
One-four set. Hawkins now gets it and stolen away. That's a beautiful steal right there by the lake. She goes coast to coast. Put it up blocked by Hawkins. And they say she got her on the head. Foul on Hawkins, the freshman. Blair Woods walks to the other end to stay away from the official because I don't think she agreed with that one. And the Patriots will shoot free throws and a chance to tie it up and take the lead. Galea Lake, a senior, just tied it up.
McKenzie Rivera will come in, the eighth grader. Will give a breather. To Hawkins. Second free throw. Wouldn't go. Rebound taken down by the Patriots, but they missed the shot. Rebound by Florence. They're going to call another jump ball. And that goes back to Hillcrest with 16 seconds. So the Patriots starting to be the more aggressive team since that timeout when Florence went on 11-0 run to start the game. Up top, Lake will have it. And I think the Patriots are going to play for the last shot with a game tied at 11 here in the first quarter.
Smith has it. Drives on Chandler, lost it, and saved it in bounds. Down to two on the clock. Into the lane. Shot put up. And it rolled in. It hit everything off the glass, off the wire. And it goes in. And Lake gives the Patriots a 13-11 lead over Florence here at the end of one. This is the Northwest Regional Tournament. We're back in one minute. One quarter in the books here at Traditions Bank Arena, Northwest Regional Tournament. Florence trails Hillcrest 13-11 after Florence led it 11-0 in the first four minutes. Hillcrest went on a 13-0 run to end the quarter and lead it 13-11, but Florence will have the basketball. Hawkins top of the key, hounded right now, finally gets rid of it to her teammate there, Jones.
Jones to Ricks at the top of the key. Now to Hawkins on the right wing. She'll make a move in the lane. Euro step, they call walk. Well, I always say you can do the Euro step, but you can't add a continent to it. If you add a continent to it, they're going to call traveling. They did their turn over Florence, and Latham will bring up the floor for the Lady Patriots wearing white and red. Nixon has it at the elbow, got the screen, into the lane, easy shot, put up and in.
That's a nice set right there on a set play. Off the horn set. The Lady Patriots have opened up a four-point lead, 15-11. Hawkins goes to the left. Hands it off to Jones. Jones now trying to dribble all the way up top. And the Patriots have really picked up the intensity on the defensive end. Ricks, between the legs, dribble, into the paint. The lefty put it up, short, no good. Rebound will go out of bounds. Last touch by Florence. So Florence is going on about a five-minute scoreless streak after being hot as a firecracker to start the game.
[26:16] Patriots Latham will bring it up the floor. Latham, cross-court pass, lost out of bounds. They go back to Florence. Remember, we started this game where Florence went, and everybody went the wrong direction with it, but it was really backcourt, and the officials didn't catch it until Florence saw it going in the right direction. That happened in a game when Whitney Body played for the Florence Falcons in the Sweet 16. Florence brings it down to the floor, shot no good, and a whistle and a foul over the back on Florence, and it'll be Hillcrest's ball.
The Lady Falcons in that game came out at the end of the first half, and they were warming up, and the coach realized, hey, the other team hadn't been coming out early, so he told his team, line up like you're going the wrong direction, and they lined up a lot with Florence, and when they inbounded, Florence took off for an easy layup, and it shook that team up that it was the end of the game, basically. So that's what it reminded me of a little bit.
Turnover by the Patriots as they lose it out of bounds. So both teams exchanging turnovers. Florence trails at 15-11 to Hillcrest in this Sweet 16 matchup. Ricks, Jones, Weatherford, Hawkins, McCroskey, the starting lineup on the floor for Florence. McCroskey has it at the elbow. She tries to drive, spins in the lane. Good move. Put up the shot. Too strong. Rebound taken down by the Patriots. He runs out of the floor, and look at Ricks. Saves it. Intercepted. Down to Hawkins. Layup. Good. Should have been in contact.
Couldn't get the call. But Jones to Hawkins. Coats it down to two. In the lane. Latham spinning. Put up the shot. They're going to call a foul on Hawkins, and that's a tough call. Hawkins was straight up, and that's their second foul. And maybe third. No, they checked that. Yeah, that's their third foul. Hawkins just picked up her third. Coach Blair Woods just realizing that. Free throw bounces in. These rims are kind. Latham gets it down. I didn't realize it was three fouls on Hawkins, and this Florence team cannot afford to lose her, but they can afford not to play her.
Second free throw. Good. Full-court pressure. Hawkins to Ricks. Ricks comes down the sideline. Man, they're hounding her. Ricks back to Hawkins. Hawkins will get it across the mid-court strike. In the front court. That's stolen away. Jones is going to make a play, but it's stolen away there by the Patriots. And there comes Nixon with a head of sting. Put it up. No good. And over the back. That's going to be a foul. It's weathered for boxed out beautifully. And drew the contact. Both players okay. You're rarely seeing girls basketball.
A player go over the top and come to the floor, but that's what Latham did. She drew the foul. Florence will substitute and bring in Doxie for the first time. It's just the key matchup now. It's Hawkins with three fouls. Can they get her through this half with no more fouls? Florence down by four. Rick's for Florence guarded by Nixon. Got the screen. Got the switch. In the lane. Got the jumper. Put it in. All about the switch right there. And Rick's has six. Quickly down the floor.
Nobody there. Layup put up and in. That was poor defense by Florence. And timeout taken by Florence. We'll do the same at the five-minute mark. Florence trails it by four. Hawkins basketball in the Northwest Regional Tournament returns in 30 seconds. Shoals drop everything. This is not a drill. Lost Pizza Company Shoals is running the full court press. The full court press Cuban sandwich. Inspired by Coach Tony Pujol. This sandwich brings championship flavor. And it's only available at Lost Pizza Company Shoals. And coming off the bench hot.
Our brand new buffalo chicken dip. Creamy. Spicy. Straight up MVP material. Run the full court press. At Lost Pizza Company Shoals. Where every bite beats the buzzer. Five minutes to go here. In the first half. Florence trails it 19-15. After having an 11-0 lead to start the game. They've been outscored 19-4 by this Hillcrest team. And it's turned up the heat. Hawkins with three fouls for Florence. Will bring it up the floor. Goes to the right side. Hands it off to Weatherford. She's got the three on the way.
Up and short. No good. Nixon got the rebound. And they want to run due to the Patriots. Hines down the floor. Spins into the lane. Kicks it over. Can't get the shot off. That's a pretty good defense there. Floater in the lane. Too strong. Rebound taken by Florence. That's Hawkins who has it. He's triple team. And finally the whistle and a foul called. As Lake has been all over Hawkins. And finally they call a foul on Lake. At the half we'll be joined by head coach Dylan Burleson of the Florence Falcons here.
[31:27] We'll be my halftime guest. Lady Falcons have it down by four. Ricks picked up at the midcourt stride. Hard to the basket. Picks it back out. McCroskey has it. Elbow. Goes into the lane on the right side. Shot no good. Rebound. Out for it. Again. Patriots starting on the boards. Here comes Nixon with it. Down the floor. Watch out. She's got a head of steam. To the left side. Put it up. She drew the contact. That was on Ricks. She's not only a big physical player.
But she's also good at drawing contact. Because she's not afraid of the contact. That's the first foul on Ricks. Nixon will go to the line to shoot two. First one on the way is good. She don't miss many. She has seven on the day. And now the Patriots will bring in McBrayer and Smith. Nixon's second free throw. Nothing but net. She has a beautiful looking shot. 21-15. Near still in backcourt. Rick saves it for Florence. Got to be strong with the basketball. Ricks to Hawkins at the top of the key.
Hawkins goes left. Hands it off to Ricks. It comes back left. Got a step in the lane. Off the glass. Missed it. No good. Rebound taken by Florence. McCroskey was hit. No call. Rebound taken by the Patriots. McBrayer up the floor. Nixon wide open. Three on the way. That's no good. That's a big miss. Rebound taken by Florence. She's done. Ricks and she's fouled by Nixon. The ball goes right to head coach Jessica McBrayer of Hillcrest who bounces the basketball and hands it back to the ref.
21-15. Florence trails by six. And baskets have come few and far between for the last eight minutes for Florence. Hawkins top of the key. Goes right. Spins back left to the basket. Floater on the way. No good. Rebound taken by Smith. Ball knocked away. It's on the floor still. Saved by Hillcrest. They've got numbers coming down the floor. Lake hesitation. Into the lane. Good defense there by the eighth grader. Great job there by Florence. Doxey stopping her there. Has to kick it back out. Hines has it for Hillcrest.
Crossover dribble. Got a step. Spins in the lane. Goes inside to Nixon. Laid it in. The largest lead of the day for Hillcrest at 8-23-15 with 2.56 to go. Here in the first half. Ricks front court. Looking for some help as she dribbles to the left. Gets it to Hawkins on the wing. Hawkins inside to McCroskey. Bounce pass to Doxey later then. That's a best looking play of the day. Four Falcons touched it. And she was wide open. And the eighth grader cuts the lead down to six.
Into the lane. Floater off the glass. No good. Rebound. Chased out of bounds. Last touch by Hillcrest. Substitution. Diamond Chandler will come in for Hawkins. So, Coach Blair Woods went about five minutes with Hawkins with three fouls and got away with it. That's a pretty slick move right there. Ricks will have to run to point a whole lot. Only a sophomore. This is a young Falcon team that's going to be something else for the next two or three years. Ricks got the screen up top. Crossover in the lane.
A beauty laid it up. Put it in. Oh, my. She left Patriots in her tracks behind her. And now the Falcons pick up a little full court pressure trying to force the turnover. The Patriots get it up the floor. Nixon has it. Looks back to the bench. Falcons trail by four. Right side going baseline. Good help on the defense. Shot. There's a tough one. And it goes in by Klein. That was a runner. She was almost behind the backboard when she shot it. But it goes in.
25-19. Six-point lead. Ricks goes to the left. Got a step. Kicked it over to McCroskey. Ball knocked out of bounds. It'll stay with Florence. Weatherford will tie her shoe here at the top of the queue. Oh, they call a foul that time on the Patriots. They didn't see that. Hines picks up her second. That's the fourth team foul. So Weatherford will inbound it. Florence down by six with 133 to go. If you're Florence, keep it in single digits here. That's the key going into half. Bounce pass into Ricks, top of the queue.
She is hounded here by Lake. Crossover to Weatherford for three. Wouldn't go. Front rim. Rebound by Doxing. She's fouled. Oh, these baby Falcons keep fighting. I like it. Ricks, a sophomore. Hawkins, a junior. Then you got in there right now Doxie, an eighth grader. That's a lot to build on in the future for Coach Blair Woods. But first things first, free throws from the eighth grader. And it's nothing but net. Good looking shot from Doxie. Cuts it to five. Hawkins will check back into the game and give Weatherford a breather.
[37:04] You're talking about having to be a masterful coach when your bench is short. Coach Blair Wood has done that. Second free throw bounced all the way around. But it was no good. But knocked out of bounds. Last touch by Hillcrest. So, the Falcons down by five will have the basketball. Hawkins will look to get it inbounds. Way a whistle. Not sure what the problem is here. Now they get it inbounds. And a shot's up by Ricks and good. A little confusion there. But it paid off for the Falcons.
They've cut it to three. It's Ricks has ten. And here's the full court press. The diamond press down the sideline. The Patriots break it in the front court. Ball knocked away. Nearly stolen. But goes back to the Patriots. A three from the corner is no good. Rebound by Florence. Chandler's got it. She's trapped. Gets it to Ricks. Goes down the sideline. She's got numbers. Two on one. Got it down to Doxie. Layup. Put up. Good. Florence has cut it to one with a minute to go here in the first.
Falcons staying up press. Nearly stolen again. But Nixon has it. Now Nixon in back court. She comes up to Flores. Dribbles through the press. Kicks it to Lake on the wing. Back to Nixon. Florence is battled back. They go into Smith. Got away with the steps there. Kicks it back out. Swings it around. McBrayer's open for three in the corner. No good. Rebound. Fought for it. Taken by the Patriots. Another three on the way. This one no good. Rebound by again the Patriots. Blocked shot by the Falcons.
Rebound. And they're going to call it a foul. Wait. They're going to call it a foul. They're going to count the basket. There was confusion there. And they count the basket. One official looked like he was going there. One official said, I'm going to call the foul. It's going to be a three-point opportunity. That's a tough break for Florence. Coach Blairwood's asking, where was the jump ball? Well, with 22 seconds to go, give Nixon credit. She just absolutely muscled that one in. And we'll have free throws.
Now the foul is on Doxia, Florence. Weatherford will check in for Hawkins in the last 22 seconds. Nixon, a tremendous free throw shooter. Knocks it down. She's got seven in the quarter and 11 in the game of the 28 of Hillcrest. Hillcrest leads Florence 28-24. It was a one-point game before that three-point play. Florence will have it 22 seconds, and they'll have full court pressure to face. Ricks in backcourt says, just give it to me. And Hillcrest says, you know what? We'll back up. And Ricks will bring it across the midcourt strike.
Ricks holds it with 10. Makes her move. Dribbles through two Patriots. Pulls up from 12. Got it. Oh, my. Has Ricks been on fire? Hillcrest down the lane. They're trotting backcourt. Don't foul, and that's it. Great defense. Great game going on in 7A. And Coach Blairwood, dressed in all black, said, we're here to play. Florence trails Hillcrest 28-26. 16-game in ladies' play where Florence trails Hillcrest 28-26. A good showing by Florence and a good finish by Florence here in that first half to trim it down to two. We're joined now by the head basketball coach for the Florence Hopkins boys, Coach Dylan Burleson. And Coach, what a start by Florence, by the way. They came out hot here, and the Lady Falcons have showed that they can play with this Hillcrest team. Not only that they can play with them, they had a really good run, a really good spark at the end of the second quarter to lead them with some momentum going into halftime.
Coach Woods and her staff does a phenomenal job. I have no doubt they're going to come out in the second half, play how they need to play, and come out with a win. It's been impressive, that is for sure. I really like what I've seen there out of this Florence team. Coach, you were here just one year ago, just about today. I mean, actually it was yesterday, I believe, or the day before on the 18th. But you were here one year ago playing Hillcrest for a chance to go to the Final Four.
[42:18] Does this bring back memories walking in and seeing Hillcrest and thinking about that one year ago? It really does. And, like, even though it's one year ago, it feels like it was not that long ago. Like, it feels like it was yesterday. But to be able to walk back in here, and we've got some guys that are here today that, you know, hopefully in the very future we're going to be back here playing on this stage. But to be here one year ago, we had two really good games that we played to help us get to a place that we have not been before.
But, you know, we're going to be back here. We're going to continue to work. But it does bring back some memories walking in here from a year ago. Forgive me. I know you don't like talking about the past, but I want to ask one more question. In the past year, have you had a lot of people still come up to you and say, man, what a run you had with that team to Birmingham? Is that brought up to you quite a bit? It is. It is.
And it is a good thing. And it is a thing that our players, or I say our former players, the guys that were a part of that team, like, they helped us or they put us in that position to win those games and to make that run at the end of the year. But it is really cool people in the community to be able to come up and still talk about that. And I hope it still continues to talk about for times to come. But we also, we want to do it again.
And we don't just want it to be a one-hit wonder. And that's the goal. Speaking with Coach Dylan Burleson, the 7A Coach of the Year from Florence High School in the state of Alabama. Glad to have him with us, our halftime guest. And, Coach, new region coming up next year. New classification to everybody in the state. I keep wanting to say we dropped to the 6A. It's actually 5A because there's only six classifications, the largest 5A team. But it's new things. Have you caught yourself now peeking ahead a little bit, seeing what these other schools do in basketball?
I think now that our season has come to an end, I and our staff has definitely tried to look at the possible teams that are going to be in our area, going to be in our regional. We will now have a sub-regional game that we will have to play after the area tournament. And that will be, while that will be an adjustment, that's a game that I have played in and coached in before. So it's going to be kind of different for our guys, but it's something we need to talk about.
But, yeah, we have definitely looked ahead at some possible teams that are going to be in our area. Muscle Shoals is probably going to be in our area. The other two we are still trying to fill out a little bit, but it will still be competitive, just as the Northwest Regional always is. Dylan Burleson of the Florence Falcons. Coach, when you come to this tournament, whether it's here or you go down to Birmingham, whether it be on the sideline or even as a fan or even as a coach, is it something you still, just this time of year, just enjoy being around this?
This is really, really where it's at. It really is, and I don't even know how to describe it. Because when you do it or when you're on the sidelines or you're playing in it, when you're not a year, it's like something's empty. It's like you're empty on the inside, and while we are not playing this year, we make it our determination and our goal to be back to playing next year. But it's a special feeling, and it's a feeling that not everybody gets either. And sometimes you have to take a step back and think about that, where there are good players and good coaches that never get to regionals or that never get to Birmingham, and it's hard to put into words because you just want to be on those sidelines playing and competing in these games.
But we're going to be back. You had three seniors that you lost off your team this year. One of them, Jayshod Pearson, was an amazing career. You don't see that often where a kid just plays night in, night out for three years like he did. A pretty impressive run right there. An impressive run, and he capped it off by having 27 points in the area tournament. But just the career that he had, I go back to so many moments, and some of the ones that come to mind are the three that he ended the first quarter against Hoover in the state championship.
James Clemens at home, his sophomore year, where people don't really remember. We were still trying to find our way, and he had 16 that game. Not just talking about points, but the everyday leadership and practice, his voice. It was heard, and it was felt, too. So that's going to be a big hole to fill, and he's going to do great things at UNA. But we're going to have to have guys step up because he provided so much. But what a career that he had. 7A is pretty loaded in many times.
But across the state this year in the 7A Sweet 16, is there a favorite? When you look at it on paper right now, there is probably a favorite. Huntsville is probably your favorite. Odds on looking in. You know, but you have some of those other teams, too, that can put up fights. Like, Hoover's not going to be an easy out. They've had some guys injured, but Hoover and Huntsville play next week, so one of them is going home. I think Vestavia has potential to possibly make a run.
But I'll tell you, too, like, James Clemens, we always felt like, had it in them to make that run. They've only lost four games this year. The last one they lost to was to us. Yeah. And it would not surprise me one bit if they were in Birmingham and possibly playing in the state championship game. You've got Fairhope down south that has been there last year. They've got a really good big. And then Dothan and Enterprise are, you know, two teams that can compete as well.
[47:20] So it is wide open. While Huntsville may be your favorite, you've got teams that can compete. And it's as wide open as it's been the last two or three years. Before I let you go, Coach Blairwood's right now coming back up with her team as they warm up. What do you think her message is to her team going to the second half? I think the biggest thing for what she was saying and what we would say is, we've got to continue to be us. We don't have to be anybody that we're not.
We've been in this situation we have all year long. It's about going in here and executing the game plan in the second half. If we do that, we're going to have an opportunity to win at the end. I don't think Hillcrest or anybody that you're going to play here is one of those teams that you can just KO until the very end. Body blow, body blow, body blow. When it comes to that opportunity in the fourth quarter, that's when you knock them out. He's a great young coach.
He'll have a great future in broadcasting here as well. One of the best in business, my good friend, Coach Dylan Burlson. Thank you for being our halftime guest. Appreciate it. The head coach of the Florence Falcons, the reigning 7A state coach of the year from last season. At the half, Florence trails Hillcrest 28-26. We come back, third quarter action. Now called Traditions Bank Arena. Wall Street, Hanceville. Showing my age there. Kevin Johnson with you. At the half, Florence Charles Hillcrest. Third quarter action about to get underway.
Florence was led and scored by Jordan Riggs, who had 12 points to lead the Falcons. Journey Hawkins had six. Five from Kinsey Doxey off the bench for the Falcons. Meanwhile, 13 points from Blakely Nixon. Falcons were 12 of 25 shooting the basketball. Only went to the free throw line twice. Meanwhile, Hillcrest was seven of nine. Rebounds were a big factor, too, I feel like. But Falcons stayed with it 17 to 15. Pretty even game. Hillcrest will have the basketball to start the third quarter. They go inside if they can. Can't do it.
Good defense by the Falcons there. Swing it back up top to Lake. Looking again. Go inside. Spinning. Kicks it back out. Three on the way from Latham. It's short. No good. Rebound. Taken by the Falcons. Hawkins. Hawkins could have run with it, but slowed it down. Hawkins will bring it up to the floor. A chance to tie it up or take the lead for the Falcons. Riggs at the free throw line. Couldn't get the shot off to Hawkins. Hawkins drives. Spins back to her left. Got a step in the lane.
Spins. Put it up. Got it to go. Forced it up. Put it in. And we're tied. Quickly down the floor. Quickly the ball back out by the Patriots. They had a chance to go inside. They swing it to Heinz. She goes to the basket. Laid it up. Too strong. Ball bounces down to the sideline, but saved by the Patriots. Kick it out to Klein. Deep three on the way again. No good. Great box out by the Falcons. Weatherford and Riggs gets the rebound. Hawkins will bring it up to the floor.
Tied at 28. Seven minutes to go in the third. Lawrence is trailed by eight. Led by 11 early. Trailed by eight in the second quarter. Hawkins spins to the lane. Shot is blocked. She's fouled. She'll go line and shoot two. She has this. That's a freshman, by the way, is Hawkins. She has this great job to go to her left hand, obviously. But she is great in spinning. She's a tall young lady, by the way. Hawkins will be listed at 5'9". And may be growing more before it's over with.
So, Hawkins, a freshman. Riggs, a junior. You need to come see these Lady Falcons next year, too. High arch and free throw. Hits the back room no good. She hits the fish with the ball right back to the official underneath. Bish to give the Falcons a one-point lead. Florence staff coaching up. Coach Craig Nelson reminding McCroskey, somebody's behind you. And that free throw is good by Hawkins. So, Florence leads it by one, 29-28 in this seesaw affair. Latham will run the point. Guarded by Hawkins. Gets in the paint.
[52:30] Kicked it out to Nixon. She's going to drive. She charged. That's a great defense by Riggs. Riggs beat her to the spot. Nixon's like, I don't think so. But Riggs is an athlete, too. Rarely, I think, Nixon sees someone that's as athletic, maybe, or as strong as she is. Just because she didn't fall, she beat her to the spot. And that's the right call. She lowered her shoulder. Third foul, too, by the way, on Nixon. That's a huge foul. Coach McBrayer is still complaining about it.
Riggs bounce pass to McCroskey. She traveled. That's a late call, but the right call. I'll give the official that. He thought about it. Said, wait, wait. That didn't look right. And he called it. Turnover, Florence. 6.30 to go. Florence here in the third quarter. Leads it by one. Now, maybe it's the attrition. Which player, star player, gets their fourth foul first? Hawkins has three for Florence. Nixon has three for the Patriots. And Nixon has the basketball for Hillcrest. Brings it up the floor. At 5'9", picked up by Riggs.
Kicks it around. Deep three from the top of the key. It's up. No good. Rebound though by Hillcrest. Shot off the glass. No good. Rebound again. Put up. That one goes up and in. The pass underneath. Let Cline to be open. And Hillcrest takes the lead. Riggs up the floor. Breaks pressure. Gets it to Hawkins. Hawkins in the lane. Got a step. Put it up. Too strong. Rebound by Nixon. Nixon will bring it up the floor. Nixon trying to make Hawkins run over. Pulls up. She'll take the deep three.
It's good. Can't let her have that. Timeout Florence. Actually, maybe timeout Hillcrest. We'll do the same. 33-29. Hillcrest leads it. We're back in 30. We'll have the basketball. And the ball knocked away in backcourt. Smith, Riley Smith, off the bench for Hillcrest, is a problem. She is a tremendous athlete. Really quick, strong 5'6", freshman, by the way. They're doubling up on Rick, so Florence has to bring it in and finally get it inbounds. And knocked out of bounds, last touch by Hillcrest.
That's Jones came to help. So once again, Florence having to get it inbounds. Jones will inbound it this time. They're doubling up on Hawkins, and they get into Hawkins. She dribbles by one and hit in the backcourt. That's a foul. That one goes against Latham. Smart hesitation dribble, 94 feet away. They were trying to trap her underneath the basket. That's the third team foul, and the third foul on Latham. So Latham has three, and Nixon has three. Third team foul against Hillcrest. Florence looking again, bounds again.
Hawkins gets it, double team. Dribbles by one, dribbles by two. Comes down the floor with the head down. Stays with it, keeps her basket. Guided over to McCroskey. McCroskey back out to Ricks. Ricks from the free throw line. Jumper, too strong. Weatherford got the rebound, brings it out. She'll pull for three. Wouldn't go. That would have been huge. Rebound, nicks, saved the inbounds. Stolen by Ricks. She put it up. She knocks it in, and it's foul on Hillcrest. Ricks was in the right place. At the right time, got it to go, and she will try to cut this lead down to one.
Doxie will come in for Hines. Ricks will try to complete the three-point play and does. She has unofficially 15 on the day. Nixon with it in a one-point lead. Hesitation dribble goes hard to the basket. Layup is good. She is just tough. Ricks are bringing up four for Florence. Down by three at the five-minute mark here in the third quarter. Hawkins hands it off to Weatherford. She's open. NBA three. Front rim, no good. And a whistle and a foul. And it looks like it's going against Hillcrest.
[57:31] And if that's against Nixon, that's number four. That's number four. And that's who it was against on the rebound, and that is a huge foul. Inbounds pass comes to Hawkins, guarded by Nixon, who has four on her. I take it right at her. And why are they stopping the clock? They said, is that five? They're shooting two fouls. It's the fifth foul, so they're shooting free throws. So we were about to lose it over here. Saying, why are they, right when Florence is going to run a play, they said, wait a minute, you've got to stop it, because that's two free throws.
That's the fifth team foul. So, Florence will see into the free throw line. Trinity McCroskey, the senior, will shoot two. And a chance to cut the lead to two right here. No good. The left is free throw bounce off the back rim. And Nixon will have to come out of the game. Latham will come in and coach Jessica McBrayer, giving the earful to the official over there on the call. She really is letting him have it. Second free throw, that would not go. Rebound taken by the Patriots.
So a missed opportunity there for Florence. Smith has it in front court to the right wing for the Patriots. They bring it back up top to Dowdell. Inside, they try to go spin move, and she lost her footing, but they're going to call a foul. And that's from that official that got an earful for about 10 seconds from the coach from Hillcrest. The first opportunity, the whistle blew. That's like Kevin feeling right there. So 35-32, and free throws coming for Latham of Hillcrest, and she makes that one.
They were seven of nine on free throws in the first half. They shoot free throws as well. 36-32. Missed the second. Rebound should have been a foul there over the back. Rebound taken by Hawkins as Rick's got it to Doxie. He gets it to Hawkins. Down by four, 425 to go. The big story right now is Nixon, the star player for Hillcrest, has four on the bench. Florence trying to drive McCroskey. Double team. Kicks it back out. That's to Rick. She got a step. Put it up.
Wouldn't go. Rebound. And over the back call. Nope. Going to be a push-off inside on Smith. Free throws coming for Florence again. Latham has actually wasn't pushed. And Jessica McBrayer, Hillcrest head coach, goes all the way to the other bench. And Latham has four. So her point guard and her star player both with four, with 4-11 to go in the third. Free throw coming from Florence's Ricks, and Jordan Ricks cannot get that one to go in. Lexi Kline will come in for the Patriots. Florence has missed three free throw opportunities in the last three opportunities.
They need to start hitting free throws down. In the close game, you've got to make those. Second free throw. Yeah, it wouldn't go. Rebound. You know, in out of bounds, it goes off of Florence's player to go back to Hillcrest. Right in front of the Florence bench. So Florence 0-4 in the last four free throws, and they trail by four. They'll pick up a diamond press now, trying to pressure the Patriots. Patriots break the press. They've got a two-on-one to the basket and got away with steps.
Oh, a block and foul. That was a tough call. So right now, the whistles are being questioned at every end at every time. That's the second foul against McCroskey. McCroskey knocked it away, but it goes right to a Patriot player. Patriots lead it by four. We're knocked away by Hawkins. She's got to be careful with three. Smith has it. Picks up her dribble. Back to the wing. Dowdell looking. And a whistle. They're going to call a foul, and that's number four. So these whistles are starting to call way fast, and that's the fourth.
Blair Woods needs to tell her, you've got four. You've got to be careful there. Substitution coming. And that foul was 40 feet away from the basket. So all of a sudden, the whistles are coming quicker. Florence will substitute and bring in Jones for Hawkins. And a travel there, and finally get the call that Florence has been waiting to. Turnover against Hillcrest. And Hawkins will come back in, so offense for defense a little bit. Blair Woods is going to try to pull this one. That's going to have to be tough.
[1:02:36] Hawkins gets it with four fouls back to Ricks. Ricks in front court. Down by four here in the third quarter with 3.26 to go. Ricks pulls it all the way back out to the mid-court strike. Ricks looking to get a head of steam. Does in the lane. Floater off the glass. Too strong. Rebound taken down by the Patriots. They have an outlet to Smith. She's open. She's the head of the game. Turn. Spins. Put it up. Got it to go. The leak out paid dividends there. And now the Florence Falcons have it in back court.
Doxie who have it knocked away goes out of bounds back to Florence. Florence down by six. Hawkins will come back out. I think if you're Blair Wood, you've got to save it to the fourth quarter. You're going to have to just live with it right now with four fouls on Hawkins. Jones will bring it inbounds right in front of me here at court side to Ricks. Jordan Ricks has been outstanding. Jones drives in the lane. Back out to Ricks. Free throw line. She'll try the three now.
Short. No good. Rebound by Weatherford. Put it up. Block. Saved by the Patriots in back court. And they dribble out of it. They get it down the sideline. They look to push the ball down the floor. Lake got to stay up. Block knocked out of bounds beautifully by Ricks. It'll stay with the Patriots. 2.27 to go. A six-point lead for the Patriots. I sort of feel like this is last 2.27 sort of danger time in this third quarter. Florence can't let this get to double digits. They've got to weather the storm a little bit.
And they've got to really pick up the defensive pressure. They go inside to Smith. Knocked away by McCroskey. Again, they're going to try to throw it underneath the basket. They do. They put the shot up. Put it in. If I could have only told them that's where they're going again. And it worked. An eight-point lead in the full-court press coming. Turnover against Florence. It'll go back to the Patriots. They're getting in trouble getting the ball in bounds. And at 2.15 to go, Blair Woods doesn't feel like she can wait any longer.
She brings in Hawkins and Doxey. And the Patriots have had the basketball. With two-star players on the bench, the Patriots have extended the lead to out to eight. They throw it all the way up top this time. And Dowdell will run the point. Dowdell trying to drive on Riggs. Kicks it back out. Hines. And it's like, boy, got to be very careful if you're Hawkins there. She reached in for that. Can't do that with four fouls. Klein. They try to take her one-on-one. The Smith drives hard to the basket.
Had to kick it back out. They do the dribble handoff. Turnover. Stolen away by Hawkins. Hawkins comes down the right sideline. Hawkins. Euro step in the lane. Put it up. Got it to go. Beautiful job by Hawkins. She has 13. Trims the lead to six with 137 to go. Klein up top. Guarded by Hawkins. McBrayer on the left side. Now to the left wing to go inside. Shot put up. No good. Rebound though by Smith. She's been a menace for the Patriots. Floater in the lane. Good. They call a block and foul on Florence.
Who's it called on is the next question. The shot goes. It'll be called against McCroskey. Her third. And Kalaya Lake hits the basket and will try to complete the three-point play. The lead at eight and trying to go to nine. Give Hillcrest credit with their two-star players on the bench. They've taken the game and extended the lead. And the free throw is good. Lake will come out. Hines will come in. And Florence down by nine with 118 to go in this full court pressure. Really playing dividends.
Hawkins has tripped and a foul called. She took a hard foul there. She'll shoot free throws though on the other end. The foul will be against Hines. They double-team Hawkins every time on the inbounds. And she's still so quick and so crafty she gets open most of the time. She'll have to shoot make two here. First one on the way. Nothing but net. The right-hander knocks that one down. She has 14 on the day. Missed that one. Wouldn't go. Rebound. Smith lost it out of bounds. There you go.
[1:07:46] Florence is basketball. It should be Florence basketball. He corrected himself. It's Florence basketball. The ball went out of bounds. And it will be Florence basketball. He motioned the wrong way at first. The Florence would get it down by eight with 114 to go in the third. Rich to inbound it. Lobs it into McCroskey on the box. Double-triple-team and a foul. McCroskey would go to the line and shoot too. McBrayer got it on the arm. And a lot of complaining coming from both sides but especially from the Hillcrest side.
And you just sense these officials are getting a lot stricter about this game. Two free throws coming for the senior. Five-foot-seven Trinity McCroskey. The lefty puts it up wouldn't go. She looks up to the sky. Maybe the fatigue of a team that goes about seven deep. Starting to pay a factor here on these free throws. Second one coming up. Got that one to go. One of two for McCroskey. 43-36. And Florence is going to pick up full-court press. And remember, Hawkins is out there with four fouls.
Got to be really careful. Down the floor they break the press down the middle. Can't reach in there. Shot put up on the floater. No good. Rebound taken by Florence. And Ricks comes out of there. She's got one-on-one down the lane. Goes hard to the basket. Put it up. Put it in. And Florence cuts the lead down to five. 43-38. Quickly up the floor of the Patriots. Pull up. Deep three on the way. Good. Boy, that's a tough one there. It's late. Knocks down to three.
46-38. Hawkins up the floor with 40 seconds to go. Kicks it out. Three by McCroskey. Won't go. Rebound inside by Hawkins. Good. Boy, can't get the call. She got fouled, maybe. But got the basket. Down the floor again. Lake wants to go inside. Kent. Ball kicked back out. Swings it down the lane. Easy layup. Put up and in. Hines. Nobody got on her. Florence looked confused on the defensive end. Down by eight with 14 seconds and a block and foul could have gone against Hillcrest and free throws for Hawkins with 13.7.
Hawkins will shoot the free throws with 13 seconds to go. If I was Florence, I would get a substitute in for Hawkins with four fouls and not let her pick up the fifth here with 13 seconds. She's got to make the free throws first though. First one on the way. No good. To say she has a high arching shot would be an understatement. She brings rain back around. And now Nixon with four fouls will come into the game for the last 13 seconds. And it looks like Blairwood's going to leave Hawkins in there even if she makes or misses the free throw.
Down by eight. Missed that one as well. No good. Rebound taken by the Patriots. They're bringing up Florida. We've got to know where Nixon is. She has inside wide open Smith layup good. That will be the end of the quarter and Florence trails by 10. As we go to the fourth it's Hillcrest 50. Florence 40. The Northwest Regional Tournament returns in 60 seconds. WITK Rogersville-Athens to cater the Shows Sports Radio 93.9 The Score Valley Broadcasting Corporation One corner left for one team in their season in the Sweet 16 Florence has got a hill to climb They're trailed by 10 They'll have the basketball trailing 50-40 Hawkins will look to get inbounds and gets it into Ricks Ricks at the top of the key guarded by Smith Smith the ninth grader is impressive for Hillcrest Ball thrown away but trying to get a roll from McCroskey but threw it away turnover Hillcrest has it on the wing will be Dowdell Dowdell will look to the right side gets that ball away and Dowdell gets it back Florence stays man-to-man 734 to go and everything outside the arc nobody now they're doing some cutters inside trying to post up on the inside look and spin nowhere to go good defense there by Florence's Jones Hawkins went for the steal nearly got the steal ball on the floor save by Florence that was Hawkins with four fouls that got it and Ricks has it in back court Florence down by 10 Florence just has to settle down get a couple of shots make some plays Ricks into the lane quadruple team missed the shot rebound taken by Florence Jones too strong on the putback rebound taken by the Patriots Patriots bring it up the floor Hines has it excuse me Lake has it in the front court spins in the lane now she's still in the lane had to pick up her dribble kicked it back out and Hines gets it back to Lake Lake with McCross going hurt can't get the shot has to kick it back out Dowdell right now Hillcrest with a 10 point lead is going to spread it out and get five outside of the arc and try to get runners in the lane Dowdell to the basket missed it off the side of the backboard rebound taken and a foul called against Hillcrest as Ricks gets the rebound Doxey will come in for Jones and probably if you want to know my opinion on me this 10 point lead is probably just the depth of this Hillcrest team they've gone they've gone about 8 or 9 deep Florence has spot checked a couple down that way but it's been mainly the same ones Hawkins drives puts the shot up too strong rebound knocked out of bounds last touch by the Patriots it'll stay with Florence and you can see and you can see the fatigue setting in on free throws and now a little bit you see the Falcons not quite as strong as they were do they have a second wind in them we'll see Hawkins to get in bounce bounce pass beautifully inside put up by Ricks is good she is tough somebody's going to get a good one in that young lady next year down the floor Smith open couldn't get the shot kick it back out three on the way two strong rebound front floor look at Ricks fighting for it Nick taken down by Hawkins Hawkins had it stolen away ball taken back by Florence Falcons have it McCroskey will bring it up the floor McCroskey back to Ricks Hawkins is just exhausted almost 8 point lead for Gilchrist Ricks strong to the basket layup no good she's fouled she'll go to the line to shoot two I'm not sure there's a player on this Hillcrest team that can stop Ricks right now but Florence is going to have to hit the free throws when they get these opportunities they've got to make every possession count free throw on the way got that one to go 20 on the day unofficially for Ricks Latham with five fouls or four fouls excuse me will come back into the game for Hillcrest I mean how much delays are you going to get here keep faking substitutions finally they're going to get the second free throw well that was a long delay second free throw got it to go Ricks stood in there and gets 21 of the day trims the lead to six big possession here with 533 to go can the Falcons get a stop they run the horn set Latham driving on to Ricks trying to spin great defense by Ricks stayed with her all the way and she still made the shot give Sky Latham credit that was a tremendous play and Ricks played outstanding defense Ricks in the front court gets it over to McCroskey got a step put it up put it in great pass there from Ricks to McCroskey trims the lead back to six Latham again top of the key that horn set with two players at the free throw line running screens and cutters they bring it back up top to Lake lost it on the floor should be a jump ball not sure why it wasn't a jump ball goes back in the lane put up off the glass and then that's the Latham timeout taken by Hillcrest really the same Florence trails at 54-46 4-48 to go in the game Falcon basketball back in 30 Rogersville Alabama come see this beautiful historic town surrounded by water cherish the pleasant ambiance with activities for people of all ages Rogersville a modern town with a down home atmosphere come for a drive a day a weekend a lifetime visit Rogersville Alabama and find out about the best kept secret in North Alabama Rogersville Alabama where you can shop eat fish and play for the fun of it back here at Traditions Bank Arena Kevin Johnson with you on this early morning start hope you're getting that third cup of coffee going and Florence needs a cup of coffee and then some down by eight with 4-48 to go here in the game trailing Hillcrest 54-46 in the entertaining 7-8 girls game in class 7-8 sweet 16 it'll be Florence basketball when we return Doxie will come out to join Weatherford Hawkins McCroskey and Ricks who is being just a workhorse Hawkins Hawkins and really Hillcrest has made this run a little bit with their star player on the bench with 4 fouls 2 of them actually have been on the bench with 4 fouls see what Florence can do down by 8 Hawkins at the top of the key goes to the right side one of the dribble handoff gets it down inside and ball kicked around on the floor she's out of bounds it should be Florence basketball and it is as the Hillcrest player fell back with the ball in her hands but on the baseline Hawkins inbound Florence runs a 4 set looking boy she missed Rick's open she gets to McCroskey at the top of the key spins down the lane goes hard to the basket and she's fouled so McCroskey will shoot free throws for 426 it's good to get the line but you got to make them and that's the fourth on Heinz so three players for Hillcrest with four one for Florence with four with 426 to go McCroskey got that one to go the winner plays Tuesday morning 9 a.m.
[1:20:24] against the winner Bob Jones in Prattville and most people think Bob Jones is the team to beat in this Northwest Regional Tournament second free throw got them both but Florence trying to stay in this one down by six quickly down the floor Hillcrest goes coast to coast shot up no good and they call a foul and that may be it with that on Hawkins that will be it or is it on McCroskey it's on McCroskey her fourth and we'll see into the line Hillcrest Lexi Klein and there was minimal contact on that I felt like as Klein went and sort of faded away first free throw no good neither that miss Hawkins will come out Chandler will come in 420 to go six point game second free throw by Lexi Klein coming up that one missed that as well but the rebound was long and went right to Hillcrest and Latham will kick it around and a deep three on the way good and that might have been a dagger as Lake couldn't get the free throws and drains the three in the lead now back to nine oh that was tough for Florence four minutes to go in the game Ricks top of the key crossover dribble in the lane she's hit no call finally the whistle comes she'll go to the line to shoot two coach Blair wood barking out to her team gotta get rebounds gotta know where shooters are gonna have to hit free throws two down by nine Ricks takes a deep breath first one on the way got that one 22 on the day for the junior make it 23 she's been perfect at the line cut the lead to seven quickly down the floor the Pats will take the three three no good a rebound for Florence big miss there McCroskey with rebound gets it to Ricks Ricks got a lane to the basket laid it up put it in here come the Falcons timeout on the floor it's a five point game with 341 to go don't go away this is Falcon basketball on the Northwest regional tournament we're back in 30 hello my name is Debra Bell Passeur and I'm an attorney with the law firm of Johnson Passeur Medley and Birchall why call an out of town lawyer when regional tournament in the sweet 16 Florence trails Hillcrest by five and a great high school girls game with 341 to go Chandler Weatherford Doxey McCroskey and Ricks come on the floor for Florence on this possession 14 fouls against Hillcrest one against Florence and Florence can be a little aggressive here and they're going to pick up full court that diamond press again Hillcrest has broke the press and Hillcrest brings back in their star player Blakely Nixon with four fouls pressure comes and nearly knocked away and boy it could have gone either way coach Blairwood thought that went off of Hillcrest as that ball hit by Ricks looked like it spun off the hand but it'll go back to Hillcrest Lake will inbound it in midcourt they'll go in backcourt now wide open underneath the basket Hillcrest and Chandler come and foul and make free throws happen for Lath and Florence confused about who's picking up who after the press the fans were screaming she's behind you by the time they get there Chandler had to give up the foul Latham will shoot two first one of the way is good she is a steady little point guard 58 52 six point lead for Hillcrest she'll try to make it a seven point lead where's number zero this one the way missed it rebound taken by Florence Chandler gets it to Ricks six point game to Weatherford open three from the corner wouldn't go got her own rebound lost it saved in bounds taken by Hillcrest oh that was a tough one had to look just wouldn't fall 315 to go and Nixon will have it calls out play number two goes to the left against Ricks tries to get down the lane put up a shot and they're going to blow the whistle against Ricks and call the block second foul that's just two athletes going at it and when bodies start following the floor the whistle goes against Florence 13 foul and Nixon will shoot free throws and she's one of the best free throw shooters they have she has sat out most of this second half with foul trouble 3-05 to go a six point game Florence boy had a chance to cut it to three couldn't get to go free throw is good by Nixon Hawkins will come in with four fouls and roll it with the last 305 this Falcon team has battled second free throw spins it up and spins it in ricks ricks will bring up the floor down by eight three minutes to go in the game and a 2-3 zone now shown by Hillcrest for the first time ricks to wetherford wetherford to mccroskey wetherford couldn't get it back now wetherford does to hawkins to ricks drives in the lane put it up got it to go contact there no call she has 25 on the day she's been the player to watch no near travel there gets it to Nixon up the floor three on the way from the corner that's missed no good rebound by hawkins Florence down by six and have the basketball ricks up the floor wetherford thought about it and she called a travel on that one and they called traveling on her and that makes the Florence fans a little frustrated because there was a traveling on the other one it was very similar 223 to go in the game it goes back to Hillcrest the Patriots will inbound it right in front of the Florence bench and Florence semi pressure here they get it to Nixon in back court she gets it to Latham Latham driving going against Hawkins now she's in there double team kicks it back out and there's a walk and finally we get the call there that one's happened about three times and finally the whistle came turn over Hillcrest back to Florence I I think I think the Florence crowd had a lot to do with that good crowd here from Florence on hand six point lead for Hillcrest Florence basketball don't have to have threes here just get a good shot McCroskey on the wing so Weatherford for three short no good rebound inside by Chandler she goes up with it missed it no good rebound taken and a left out called on Florence over the back against Chandler two minutes to go in the game fourth team foul Weatherford's a good three point shooter but that one was just short full court press by Florence they get it in bounds back court in the traveling back court again Florence starting to pressure starting to pay a little dividend so get the ball back Florence does not have to have a three they just need a good shot and I would definitely get in the hands of Ricks or Hawkins Hawkins will inbound it man Weatherford was fouled no call they go up top to Ricks Ricks drives on Nixon who couldn't make the shot to McCroskey McCroskey looking free throw line jumper good big shot there timeout taken by the Falcons lead cut down to four 148 to go in the game we'll keep it right here Florence has trimmed this lead down and made something of it give them a lot of credit that is for sure Falcon team would not go away McCroskey with the big shot there to trim the lead and give the Falcons a chance in that full court pressure starting to pay a little dividends I want to say thank you to our sponsors of Alabama Health Guidance Florence Utilities Irons Electric JC Hammonson Singing River Dentistry Town of Rogersville Northwest Shoals Community College Johnson Pasteur Medley and Virtual Attorneys Cypress Creek Rental Michael Noe Insurance we thank you all for that's been and then the Desher boys after that about 915 or 930 we'll have West Coast basketball for you Monday night inbound stolen by Hawkins she's in the lane she had it stolen right back oh Nixon got away with one there oh that was huge Latham in front court that could have been huge for Florence to Nixon open she'll drive on the lane got a step put it up made it oh that almost came out and the lead back up to 6 with 127 to go don't need to panic give you Lawrence down by 6 with 123 Rick's got the high screen drive got it down to Hawkins she drives in the lane got a step put it up put it in Hawkins gets the basket full court press Latham throws it to Nixon Nixon down the floor to Smith Smith picks up her dribble back to Latham Latham drives in the lane put it up missed it rebound down by Hawkins got a chance with one minute Lawrence will bring it up the floor down by 4 Hawkins over to McCroskey for 3 oh it wouldn't go rebound chased down by Smith that was a good look it went back around you could hear the crowd groan and now a near turnover but Florence can't get it Nixon with it in front court don't foul her Nixon to the basket lay up good that might have done it timeout with 39 seconds to go and Hillcrest leads at 64-58 with 39.7 this is the Northwest Regional Tournament we're back in 30 hi this is Ike Fowler with Alabama Health Guidance whether you are looking for a Medicare health plan or you are under 65 and exploring individual health care options Alabama Health Guidance can help you find the plan that fits your needs our local agents make it simple so stop by our office at 885 Florence Boulevard or give us a call at 256-648-5710 again that's 256-648-5710 39.7 to go in the game Florence trails Hillcrest by 6 the Falcons have the basketball Florence had a chance to cut it to 1 that 3 pointer just looked good and it wouldn't go back rimmed it matter of fact McCroskey thought she had hit it but it didn't go and Florence will have to go down and get well probably definitely have to shoot a 3 now I think with girls basketball you can try to get a quick 2 but I'm not sure how many timeouts Florence has left maybe 1 and the Patriots will pick the Falcons up at midcourt the Ricks will bring it up to fuller the left hand dribble hesitation into the lane put it up oh and she's fouled she'll go down and shoot 2 and that's the 5th on Hines if I'm not mistaken so Hines will come out of the game but depth has not been a problem for this Hillcrest team Ricks is so good with that hesitation dribble and then quick to the basket so substitution coming for Florence Doxy will come in free throws for Ricks first one coming from the junior rolled it in she has 11 in this quarter alone 28 unofficial in the day make it 29 she drains them both I'm running out of room to put free throws down inbound Smith having trouble gets it into Nixon in backcourt Nixon's fouled by Weatherford not the one you want to foul necessarily with 31 seconds to go if she makes both it's still just a two possession game and Blakely Nixon the senior will step to the line for Hillcrest the foul is on Weatherford Hurt fourth with 31 seconds to go in the game Nixon will shoot two she hits nothing but net she has 23 and been in foul trouble much of the game second free throw she got them both it's a six point game three point time coming for Florence Hawkins down the floor drives hard to the basket lost it got it up got it back put it up she's fouled that's the fifth on Nixon she'll foul out with 22 seconds to go and to the line will be Hawkins to shoot two so they lose their star player but it may be too little too late the Hillcrest fans travel all the way here from Tuscaloosa applaud their star player and Journey Hawkins will have to shoot two first one on the way missed it with 22 seconds to go you almost want to miss this one get a chance to get a rebound down by six second one on the way she missed it in and out rebound by Florence Rick put it up put it in down by four and a timeout taken by Florence with 20.3 on the clock down by four Florence will try to pull out a miracle this is the Northwest Regional Tournament we're back in 30 Shoals drop everything this is not a drill Lost Pizza Company Shoals is running the full court press the full court press Cuban sandwich inspired by coach Tony Pujol this sandwich brings championship flavor and it's only available at Lost Pizza Company Shoals and coming off the bench hot our brand new buffalo chicken dip creamy spicy straight up MVP material run the full court press at Lost Pizza Company Shoals where every bite beats the buzzer 20 seconds to go Hillcrest trails Hillcrest excuse me leads Florence Hillcrest leads Florence 66-62 the Florence Hawkins led it 11-0 to start the game and then Hillcrest took a 13-11 lead at the end of the first and that might have been the difference in the game and Florence couldn't extend that lead out and Hillcrest answered back Florence has stayed close they have yo-yoed back and forth they're going to have to really play smart here they'll come in a full court press Smith will inbound it look to get inbounds and they come inbounds down the sideline gets by two Falcons now three Falcons now foul and Hawkins just picked up her fifth she had to with 15.3 on the clock the freshman will come out the goggles go up what a season what a game what hustle journey Hawkins will be heard from for a long time I said a freshman actually a junior free throws coming for Klein as he makes 67-62 I think Hawkins is a freshman I'll double check that second free throw on the way got them both six point game still not over 15.3 Weatherford in back court will come up the floor down the sideline racing Weatherford all the way down spins gets it back out ball knocked away stolen away by the Patriots and that's going to do it foul all the way to the basket the Riggs went for the basketball couldn't get it and it'll be free throws coming with 4.3 and Florence's valiant effort will come up just short and the Patriots are going to go to the Elite Eight Sky Latham and the Patriots will advance to the Elite Eight free throw up good making a seven point game and what an effort what a season by Blair Woods Florence Falcons they did everything but just couldn't get some shots to fall second free throw no good it'll be rebound taken by Latham herself and now we'll dribble it out and Florence falls to Hillcrest final score 69 Hillcrest Florence 62 you're listening to the Northwest Regional Tournament we're back in two minutes there's a to 62 and the Lady Falcon season comes to a close at 17 and 15 and Hillcrest will advance to this sweet elite eight awaiting the winner of Bob Jones and Prattville stats here today Kevin Johnson with you by the way here Wallace State Hanceville for this 7-8 girls game and what a look at team stats Florence shot 46% in the game they were 24-52 but three-pointers they were one of 11 and I'm telling you three or four of those went halfway down and came out so it was tough for them one of 11 just they got a couple of those who would have been a difference in the game but they couldn't get them to fall and then free throws Florence was 52% 13 of 25 so 50% from free throw basically and 9% on one of 11 from three point land was what really cost Florence the game especially when you compare it to Hillcrest Hillcrest 24 of 53 matter of that both teams made 24 field goals they shot 45% but they hit four three pointers out of 15 attempts and more importantly Hillcrest was 17 of 24 so they really knocked down the free throws so you take the three extra three pointers and the extra free throws and that's why they win this game by seven today knocking off Florence the Falcons hung with them on the rebound actually out rebounded Hillcrest 36 to 33 turnovers Hillcrest had 12 Florence had 14 but it was just coming down to basically the shooting the three point shooting of Hillcrest and maybe the depth and the free throws that Florence missed and the free throws that Hillcrest made because both teams shot almost identical from the field and the identical free throw opportunities from the free throw line except 17 were made by Hillcrest to 13 of Florence leading scores for let's just get Hillcrest run it down Scott Latham had four or nine points four points for Hines 16 points for Lake Kali Lake four for Dowdell and six points for Smith and four for Kwan and then the leading score Blakely Nixon the senior five foot nine she had 26 points and folks she sat out much of the second half with four fouls and still had 26 points she was only out dueled and out shined by Jordan Ricks who was well just special we'll get to her in just a minute for Florence for the Falcons they had 16 points for Journey Hawkins three for Charlie Weatherford seven for Trinity McCroskey five for Kinsey Doxey and 31 points for Jordan Ricks Ricks played all 32 minutes she was 12 of 23 from two-point land missed one three-point opportunity 709 from the free-throw line she had a double-double with 10 rebounds and added four assists she was more than outstanding and by the way I misspoke let me get this for y'all for Florence fans correct this because they had it wrong but I talked with Coach Dylan Burleson to make sure everything was good Ricks is only a sophomore Hawkins only a freshman so the future is incredibly bright for the Florence Falcons Brene Jones Charlie Weatherford Trinity McCroskey and Diamond Chandler careers come to a close but they have nothing to be ashamed of for those four seniors but the Falcons are returning a lot in the future and the future is bright for the Florence Falcons whose season comes so close today here at Wallace State Hansville as they fall to a really good Hillcrest team by a score of 69 to 62 well that's going to do it for us for our broadcast today here and all the broadcast for this day for the Northwest Regional Tournament we'll be back
