[0:00] Florence Falcons football night at Lost Pizza. For the next hour we'll discuss Florence Falcons football with coaches and players. Presented by 93.9 The Score, State Farm Agent J.D. Byers and River Bank and Trust. Now live from Lost Pizza in historic downtown Florence, here's the voice of the Florence Falcons, Kevin Johnson. And good evening, live from Lost Pizza we are tonight here on 93.9 The Score. KJ with you as we get ready for our playoff edition of Florence Falcons football live at Lost Pizza. And we've got a packed house here tonight. It is packed all over the place and we're so glad to have everyone here with us enjoying this tonight and those listening on 93.9 The Score as well.
Would you help me tonight in welcoming our head coach for the Florence Falcons. Let's give a big round of applause to Coach Kenny Morrison. Coach, how are you doing my friend? Doing great. Good to see you tonight. Everything going well for you? Going well. All right. It's not the regular season anymore. It's November football. It's a little different and here we go. New season's upon us. Everybody's 0-0. It's time to get started. Let's talk about rewinding a little bit to last week. We went to Fort Payne. Long trip to Fort Payne.
Had some adversity early. Went down 14-0. It's the most we've been down at any time, anywhere this year. So talk about how this team came back through the adversity of that. Yeah, we just settled in. It was a little tough for us there to start. You know, I think our guys thought it was going to be a little bit easier, but Fort Payne hit us in the mouth, woke us up. We needed that to happen. We didn't need it to be real easy. It wasn't very easy, Nate, but you made a difference. You made changes.
Are halftime adjustments something that you continually have to work on? You know, our coaches do a great job at halftime making adjustments, but they're minor. You know, we're trying to talk through our guys. The biggest thing at Fort Payne the other night, 14-14, was settle down and play. Play our game. Quit trying to do too much and settle in. Keep your composure and let's just play. Speaking with Coach Kenny Marson and the Florence Falcons and Coach, a long time ago, you were the O.C. at Decatur High School where they had some really good teams.
And I got to see some of those teams. I was there for many seasons watching some of those games from time to time. Does this team sort of remind you a little bit of some of those Decatur teams from days past? Yeah, you asked me that for the other pregame show, and these guys are a close-knit group. That's what we had at Decatur for a lot of years. They play with a lot of pride. They're playing for their community and each other, and it's just a special bond they have and a brotherhood that we're seeing out of them that was familiar to us over at Decatur.
Speaking with Coach Kenny Marson of the Florence Falcons, and Coach, your offense, let's talk about them for a few minutes. As a whole, averaging 34 points a game, nearly 35, scored 34 or more eight times out of 10 games this year. What has been the difference in this team? The difference is continue to do what we do. I'm not trying to do too much. You know, our coaches, we obviously meet on Sunday, put the game plan together. There's always some wrinkles and stuff we see, but it's funny how we always circle back.
By about Wednesday, we've looked at some things, may not like it. Coach McGuire and that staff gets together, and they narrow that playbook back down to what we do, and it's funny how it comes back around to what we've had success with all year long and just continue to add a few little wrinkles to it, not trying to do too much. Great balance this year, too. As I said earlier, I said on one of the shows I was involved in, I said, Florence can run it when they want to, but they throw it when they have to.
That's a great possibility for balance there. Absolutely. We've been very well balanced all year. We're obviously going to be a run-first team, and I've been in this business a long time, and you better be able to run the football first. You're right about that. Speaking with Coach Kenny Marson of the Florence Falcons, and Coach, defensively, you're a team that's given up 14 points a game. Most in the game you've given up any time this year, 21 points. Why are they so dominant at times? We've got that bend-but-don't-break mentality.
I think Coach Wisdom gets tired of hearing me hollering and fussing, trying to figure out what we're doing, hollering and screaming on the sideline. But when they look up and they've got two yards and we're upset about it, or four yards, the biggest thing with these guys is we've got to continue to play hard, run to the football, and tackle well. And when they settle in and do what they're coached to do and play together as a unit, they're pretty hard to beat. The St. Clair County Saints are marching in Friday night to Florence, Alabama, watching them on film and seeing some of the scouting report.
What jumps out to you about that team? Athletes. They got them, and they play in a tough league with Clay Choppel and those guys. And they've got a really skilled receiver out there that you've got to get him hemmed up. You give him much space, it's going to be trouble. But they're a well-coached football team, and they play extremely fast. So we're looking for the challenge. We're up for it. Speaking with Coach Kenny Morrison, the head coach of the Florence Falcons, whose team will take on St. Clair County tomorrow night at Brawley Stadium.
[5:26] We're looking forward to that one. Hope you are as well. You can hear it on 93.9 The Score. We encourage you to be at the game. We need a huge crowd from the city of Florence. And you can download the 93.9 The Score app and listen to it while at the game. And speaking of that, Coach, it is a home playoff game. That just hits different, doesn't it? It does. And that's coming from last year where we thought we were region champs, lost a deal in a tiebreaker, and ended up fourth having to travel to Mobile.
You know, it's something that slipped away from us last year. It matters to be at home. It matters to be region champs. And, you know, we've got an opportunity to possibly keep this thing here. But one game at a time, we need a great crowd out there. I know our community is going to come out and support these young men. They've worked hard all the way back to the February 6 a.m. in the morning, two hours a week stuff that was going on. And these guys deserve a crowd out there behind them.
If we can get the crowd from Lost Pizza to show up at Brawley Stadium, I think it will be half full at the stadium. I mean, this is the biggest crowd I've seen in a long time. It's back in here. Huge crowd. Great. A lot of folks still lined up trying to get food. But there's still room for folks to come on. And that's the same. It will be tomorrow night when you get ready at Brawley Stadium. And the Friday night lights at Brawley Stadium. Coach, I've been there a long time.
You've been around that stadium a long time. There's something magical about that stadium. Some things can happen. It is. I've played in it myself and love coaching in it right now. And it's an exciting place to play. Of course, you've got the lights and the jumbotron. Our band and cheerleaders, they do a phenomenal job. I'm hearing there's some cowbells and some noisemakers that's going to be in the stands tomorrow night. It's going to be a great high school environment for football. One last thing. The regular season goes by so quickly.
How has this week been? This has been the best week of practice we've had. Since Muscle Shows. Good. I don't think our guys got complacent. I just think the routine may abort them along the way. But we've been a routine every week. We hadn't changed a whole lot in our practice still. And it's like it's rejuvenated them that it's a new season. We've got the 9-1 behind us. We've got all that. We've got the region championship. Let's move on to this. And you can see the excitement in them.
And they've practiced really well this week. I'm proud of them. The first week of the playoffs, by the way, it lasts 37 days. I don't know if you know that. It's a long week, doesn't it? It seems like it's been taking a long time. But we're almost there. We're getting close, Coach. Are you fired up? Hey, we're ready to play. Looking forward to it. Coach, we look forward to it. We'll talk to you in a few minutes at the end of the show. Let's hear it for Coach Kenny Marson, the Florence Falcons.

I think I realized where I was at, but we're live at Lost Pizza tonight here on 93-9 to score for one hour.
[11:02] Previewing the playoff game between Florence and St. Clair County, which will be at Brawley Stadium Friday night. We want a big crowd from the city of Florence to come out and be a part of that as well. Sometimes we bring in special guests for these special nights, and we're glad tonight to have with us a good friend. A friend from the past to come in. He is also one of the sponsors of the show, J.D. Byers. J.D., how are you doing, my friend? Doing good.
It was a big day at the office. I'm glad to get away and see you right now. Yeah, that's right. If anybody's looking for me, he's at Lost Pizza on the radio right now. That's a familiar place for you. Welcome back to the show's area. For many years you've been going, and now back to the show's area, and you have a new position, a new job. Talk about that there with State Farm. Yeah, we love it. You know, it's so community-centered. We help people. We put the customer first.
To have a reason, but also an excuse to come back has been a lot. We've been gone 12 and a half years. Yeah. There was a really bad car accident in my past, and just not able to travel like we used to. Right. So this has been a godsend, and to be able to come back home to do what I do has been great. Well, welcome back, and we're glad you're here. And we also want to say thank you to being one of our sponsors for Florence Falcon Football Night here at Lost Pizza.
We appreciate State Farm doing that, and his agent here, J.D. Byers, who we're talking to. And J.D. Byers is not a stranger to radio for anyone listening in today. J.D., for years, you were the voice of the Florence Falcons and did that, and we'll talk about that in a little bit. But in your years of doing the Florence Falcons football, by the way, what was the most memorable game for you maybe in high school football that you remember? If it was Florence, you know, we made that transition from having Bradshaw and coffee and then Florence.
And I think that last game of Bradshaw versus coffee at Brawley was very memorable because we did it, I think we called it, one last time or something. And, you know, did a big promotion like you do with every game now because you do such a phenomenal job. But I guess it would be that Hoover game. Oh, yeah. 2007. Yeah, you had MTV and was it Two-a-Days? Oh, Two-a-Days, it just happened. Rush Probst. Yeah, yeah. And they come in, and we put 14,000-plus. They were ranked nationally.
Yeah. Florence, a huge underdog. Hoover comes in. They take over the Marriott. They stay, you know, in a – Two or three days. Four-star hotel, yeah. Yeah. And they have to kick a mid-range field goal right at the end to beat Florence. Otherwise, it's all Florence that night. You know, that game is still talked about to this day. I probably, especially during football season, will hear somebody say, do you remember that game with Hoover in 2007? It is like – I think the crowd has grown from 14,000 to 28,000 because it seems like so many people have talked about it.
We're with J.D. Byers, the longtime voice of the Florence Falcons before K.J. here took over. And I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for you. And you got me into broadcasting, and I want to say thank you for that. But the story of you getting me into broadcasting is quite ironic. It happened back in 2004 with basketball. You want to tell the story a little bit? Well, somebody the other day was saying they were part of your crew now, and I don't know why I can't remember who it was.
And they said you recruited them, or maybe you were telling me the story, and they were going to be real nervous. And I was like, well, I bet you got a lot more than 45 minutes heads up than Kevin Johnson got when I asked him to come do color analyst work for Florence High School basketball. But, boy, did we have a ball. Because you and I were UNA fans in college together, and we kind of eat, breathe, sleep, and it was just natural. We kind of picked up where we left off as fans.
Well, I worked with one of the best. My favorite story that night is I got to the gym for the Florence basketball game, and you put on the headsets. You said, put the headsets on. I said, okay, now what's it? We're going live in 10 seconds. And I thought, my goodness, and we're in. And then right before the half, you said, hey, Kevin's going to interview the new football coach at Florence High School football team, Coach Joe Hollis. I'd never interviewed anybody. And I looked at you, and you said, hey, it's your time to do it.
And it ended up. No, it was great because, really, it was one of those things where you threw me into the fire, but it really was good. And I never thought that I'd be doing this some 23 years later. But I've broadcast Florence basketball for 23 years, Florence football now for about 18. But you got me started, and I thank you for that. But you had a lot of great times. And your time at Brawley Stadium, that's a place that's special to you, not only as a broadcaster, but as a player.
You were there to talk about that as well. Yeah, the early 90s under Coach Bobby Wallace, you know, on some UNA teams and had a career as place kicker. But then getting to see a lot of great games, calling games for North Alabama as well as the voice there. But, you know, you and I had not just the Florence tie, but you and I did some state championship stuff at the BJCC. And then we've done some college broadcasts together. A tornado came through at the night.
[16:03] We was waiting to do the game the next morning and woke up in the middle of the night with a tornado. So we had some experiences. The network puts us on the top floor, and it was about 3 a.m. And you said, what do we do now? And I said, well, it's already here. It's already here. I think we just ride it out. Yeah, that's where I was supposed to pray as the preacher, and I did. So we got through that as we speak with J.D. Byers, longtime broadcaster.
And still today you're broadcasting some, and now you've gone nationally. Talk about that a little bit, where you're going next and how that works on. So Saturday I was at Cincinnati, did the number six Utah at Cincinnati. Cincinnati was coming off a big win of a previous number seven-ranked Texas Tech, and Cincinnati was asleep. So Utah took care of business, and we found out Utah's pretty good. Yes, they are. They're still undefeated, and they're still top ten ranked. So, wait, no, next Saturday I'm supposed to be at Gonzaga.
Basketball. Basketball for LSU. I'll be working with John Brady. Oh, yeah. My color analyst, by the way, last week was one of the Petrinos. Oh, yeah, the Petrinos, yeah. But none of the ones you know. None of the ones I know, yeah. It was Jared, cousin, or nephew. But, yeah, John Brady and I have worked many games together on the hardwood, and he is just phenomenal. Final Four coach with LSU, Ball Hall of Famer. Sure. A lot of folks like him, and he's just a winner to work for.
And then I'm supposed to be doing some Colorado versus somebody. Down the stretch. And bowl games and everything else. Well, J.D., we just want to say thank you for, first of all, for all that you did for broadcasting, and you got me started, which I helped get maybe Ben Ray started a little bit, and now does the voice of the lines. And we sort of just pass it down from one to another. But thank you for helping me out on that. And also, thank you for State Farm being a sponsor.
Again, how can people contact State Farm and get in touch with you if they have any questions? Well, we're in Petersville. We're on Cloverdale Road. Great staff with a lot of experience. Just dumb old me in there in the back office. Everybody else knows what they're doing. But, yeah, you can call us or come by. And we just like being part of the show and doing what you do. And it's not about return on investment. We just like being part of the special things you do for young student athletes.
And we think that's just super. But it's J.D. Byers State Farm in Petersville on Cloverdale Road. I'm glad St. Clair County is coming here. That's right. Because Ike Fowler and I went down there one time. To Odinville, yeah. And I did not know they were in the National Anthem. Because I had the studio from, I think, 93.9. We were doing a playoff game for somebody else. And the audio is coming to my ear. I didn't know we were in the Anthem. The whole stadium is silent.
St. Clair Stadium is not like Brawley. It's very small. And I think I may have said out loud, really loud, this place is absolutely the worst. No, I may have said this place is an absolute dump. Ike heard me and he goes off behind where nobody could see him. And I'm looking at him like, what's the big deal? And then he was like, look out towards the entire home side was looking right back at me. Because they could hear me during the, maybe they were in the invocation or something.
So I don't think I'm welcome back in that stadium. Well, maybe they've forgotten by now. But I tell you, we have some stories over the years and some great ones. But we, again, appreciate what you've done for us. And for me personally, I'll say thank you. But also for helping the Florence Falcons. And come to Brawley Stadium tomorrow night and see a good game. And tell our good friend J.D. Byers at State Farm you appreciate him being one of our sponsors. Okay, good to see you, my friend.
You're the best. Go Falcons. J.D. Byers of State Farm and a long-time broadcaster, including the voice of the Florence Falcons. We're live at Lost Pizza back after this two-minute timeout. [21:14] From our playbook to your plate. It's time for a Florence Falcons one-minute timeout with head coach Kenny Morrison, following Florence's 35-14 win over Fort Payne. Coach had a little bit of a slow start, but we recovered pretty well. Yeah, that was real sluggish. We could tell that that bus ride was long for us. We might have ate too much at pre-game meal. We were real bad sluggish. They were not focused from the time we got them at 1240 today until the time we kicked off at 7. We knew it was coming and needed to happen for us, and it was a good wake-up call for us at halftime.
Pre-season's over. Real season starts next week. Got a home game. Very proud of that. Tell us about what your next week looks like. St. Clair County at home. Just glad to be home. Again, I've said it every week. We've got to worry about us. If we don't fix the little things that we've got going on, like I said, it'll be short-lived in the playoffs. We've got to be better. It's Florence and St. Clair County in the first round of the playoffs this Friday night. Airtime 6 p.m.
Kickoff 7 here on 93.9 The Score. We're back live here at Lost Pizza. Kevin Johnson with you here live on 93.9 The Score. Glad to have a Florence Falcons football night as we preview the playoff game coming up against St. Clair County, which will be on tomorrow night at Brawley Stadium at 7 p.m. Joined now by the assistant coach for Florence High School, a good friend of mine. Let's welcome Coach Drake Roy being with us. Coach, how are you doing, my friend? How are you? How are you? Good to see you today.
It is a packed house here today. I don't know if anyone can hear us in here, but you and I are hurt on 93.9 The Score, so that's all that matters. Yes, sir. Coach, let's talk about it for a little bit. First of all, are you excited about the playoffs as much as the kids are, you think? Man, I think I'm just as excited as they are. You still have that boyish attitude sometimes. Yes, I do. You get that excitement there. Let's talk about a couple of things.
First of all, what positions do you coach at Florence High School? I coach the safeties in the corners. So you got the backside of the safeties in the corners helping out with those guys. That is going to be an important position tomorrow night for sure. They're going to be a busy night for the team that throws it a lot. What is the most important thing you feel like you do with communication with safeties and corners, getting them ready for that game? Man, just basically telling them to make sure they're reading their keys, make sure they're being comfortable.
And the most important thing, don't get beat deep. Yeah, don't get beat deep. Play the next play. Play the next play. Yes, sir. That is that they live to the next play. Yep. When you have that front seven up in front of you, you got a little safety net there too, don't you? Yes, sir. Yes, sir. That front seven is good. Yeah, it's pretty nasty up there. Yes, sir. So we will take that as well. We speak with Drake Roy, who is the assistant coach at Florence High School, coaches the safeties and the defensive backs.
And coach, when you played in high school a few years ago, I'll tell you that, you were there, I know, around 07, 08, somewhere like that. 07, I know you were there. What was the most memorable game you played in, you felt like? It may have been the Hoover game. We just talked about that. The Hoover game. A playoff game. First round playoff game. First round. Have you ever seen Brawley Stadium with that many fans before? Not that pat. No. Not that pat. We had people standing on the backside, dugout.
Yeah, old baseball field. It was unreal. Do you still remember that game from time to time? Yes, sir. I even check it out on YouTube sometimes. Yeah, you can check it out. You had a couple of good catches out there. That's good. Does that play in a game like that, do you share that with your guys that you coach a little bit and say, hey, I want you to know, this is what Brawley Stadium can be like a little bit. Yes, sir. We talk about it all the time.
Just tell them how exciting it can be to bring that playoff to the city. What was Coach Briggs like as a head coach? Coach Briggs was a, he was an electrifying coach, him and Coach DJ. Yeah. Him and Coach DJ. Him and Coach DJ together was scary. Yeah, they were pretty electrifying. They could intimidate me, and I was on the sideline as a chaplain, so I understand that. Hey, does your experience, do you think, playing in those games help you as a coach? Yes, sir. It helps a lot.
Just even with a kid getting down, learning how to talk to them or going and learning how to pick them up. There's times you need to get after the kid, but there's times where that kid needs encouragement. You've got to know when to do that, don't you? Yes, sir. That's really important. Speaking with Drake Roy, assistant coach for Florence High School, coaches the defensive backs. And Coach, I'm going to say this in a nice way, because you and I are close. You are a communicator. You've always been a communicator.
How about that? Yes, sir. But how important is communication during the week between coaches and players? The practice, all those communication. That's an important time. Talk about that a little bit. Communication is really important, man. That's just like I tell my safeties. Just because on our sideline, corner and the safety may not, the backside safety in the other corner may not hear it, so I preach it every day. Pass it on. Pass it on. Communicate. Talk. Got to be loud. Got to be loud. You've got to have a little personality to play in that defensive backfield.
[26:18] Got to be able to talk. That's good. I like that as well. Which player on this team, Coach, on Florence High School, do you think would be the Drake Roy of this team that you remember when you played, you were out there playing? Which kid do you say, hey, that kid, he's got a little Drake Roy in him when he plays? Offense or defense? Because you played offense in high school. Yeah, I played offense in high school. There's probably a few of them, Coach. I can't name one of them, but there's probably a few of them.
Oh, I can name two or three. We've got some good guys. We've got some good guys. Yeah, when Kevontae Green makes touchdown catches, he's got a little Drake Roy in there. I've seen that, so that's good. But do you ever see yourself in those players sometimes? I do. Yeah. All the time. Like you said, I see myself in Kevontae Green, man. I was probably about his size. Yeah. I just had a two on my eight. I had a two on your eight. I like that. As we speak with Drake Roy, assistant coach at Florence High School.
Coach, what do you want to see out of your defensive backs tomorrow night? Man, everybody flying to the ball. Yeah. Everybody. All 11. No matter what the ball is. Hey, how important is the sideline? Kids, I know you don't can put 11 on the field all the time. How important is that sideline to be engaged in the game? Because, you know, when I was helping with you, one of the things I was, hey, on the sideline, don't sit away. Yeah, trap it up, guys. Grab it up, guys.
That's right. Yes, sir. Is that important still today? Most important people in the game right now is the sideline. Yeah, man. You know, I always said, if nobody else would cheer for you, cheer for one another. Yep, yep. And so I think it's important. I was wondering how that happened. Well, playoff game, Brawley Stadium. You and I have a lot of memories from it. Let's go make some memories tomorrow night, okay? Yes, sir. Yes, sir. That'll be fun. I know your kids may be listening. Yeah.
You want to give a shout out to them? Because they're some of my favorite boys. A big shout out to my three, the 3K, Keegan, Kyrie, and Kobe. All right, you heard it from Dad. He's going to pull in the W tomorrow night. Coach, we thank you for being here, man. It's great to see you grow from a player to a coach. It makes me feel old, but I'm so proud of you. Yes, sir. And let's go have a W tomorrow night, okay? Thank you. Go Falcons.

Welcome back to Lost Pizza, 93-9 to score, Florence Falcons football night, live show here, packed house. I mean, it is a lot of Florence blue in here, a lot of the football players here having a great time, other people are here having parties, people outside, it is a packed house, but a lot of fun, and Lost Pizza, we say thank you for hosting Florence Falcon football night for our Thursday nights, and we hope to do a couple more if we can get a couple wins in, in the playoff season as well.
[31:28] We're joined now by the assistant coach of Florence High School, Coach Kevin Sledge. Coach, how are you doing tonight, my friend? Doing great, man, how are you? Doing well, good to see you, and do you have a favorite go-to here at Lost Pizza when you come here? I didn't until the last radio show we did, Hayden put me on the Diablo, so. Oh, the Diablo. It's amazing. It's pretty good. Yeah, absolutely. I'm a simple guy, I like certain things, but I keep it pretty simple, and I've heard that Diablo is really something special, so you're right about that.
Coach Kevin Sledge here at Florence High School, and Coach, there was a time when you were on the opposite side of Florence High School. You were on the other sideline of the visitor sideline. We've been talking about memorable games of Brawley Stadium. Do you remember some of those games coming over here and playing Florence? Yeah. The last time I coached against Florence, it was probably the most memorable high school game of my career in the worst way. We jumped out. We were not very good that year, but we come over to Brawley, and before the first minute was off the clock, we're up 21 to nothing, which is crazy.
I can't even explain how it happened. Florence never touched the ball. No, and two injuries in the game, delays. Game went final, I think, at 12.15 a.m., and we lost 40 to 39 in overtime after having a 21-0 lead, but that's actually one of the games why I wanted to be here. The grit and resiliency of Florence, it was pretty special. It's special to be here now. That night, it wasn't very special. You and I were talking about that game, and I was on the sideline, and I wasn't really a coach.
They called me coach, but I was just a chaplain, but when we got down 21-0, that's when I kicked in a little bit, and I went up and down the sideline and said, we're going to win the game. And I'm telling you, there's still kids today that come up to me and got me in and said, I remember that game because, you see, you believe we're going to win it. I said, that's all I could say. That's all I knew to do because we didn't, we ain't touched the ball.
We had a, y'all returned to kick all, I think, for a touchdown, kicked our own side kick and got it. They didn't mean to kick an own side kick and got it again. Exactly. And Florence never ran an offensive snap, and they were down 21-0 and still won the game. But it was a magical night, and that's what I want to talk about. Brawley Stadium has something about it, doesn't it? It's pretty mystique, isn't it? It is an unbelievable place. You know, all these years, going, what have I been here now, 16 years at Florence.
Wow. Just, you know, sharing it for all those years and we're prepping it to look for Florence High School on Friday night and then Saturday at UNA. This year, the fact that it's ours and the fact that thus far knock on wood we're going to keep rolling, we've protected the walls of Brawley and the crowds have been amazing this year. The student section, oh my gosh. Yes. Over the top this year. They have been over the top. I agree. And I think they're going to get even better.
And so that's good too. So we're looking forward to that. We'll talk about them in a minute as we speak with Kevin Sledge, who is the assistant coach at Florence High School. You work mainly as weights and conditioning and all the strength coach. You do a great job. How do you keep athletes, though, motivated late in the season? Well, Kevin, the biggest thing I've tried to instill in these guys and there's posters on the wall when you come in the indoor and they simply read culture, there's a line and then everything.
So it's culture over everything. And to me, these guys, and it's what I love about this group, I don't have to motivate them. They have bought into that message of the culture of this program is when we walk through the threshold of this door, it's time to go to work. And there's days, they're 15, 16, 17-year-old boys. There's days that I have to blow the whistle. All right, bring it in, guys. But typically, when I blow the whistle as they go to work, the weights start clinging and they're getting after it.
What has this team showed you that you've seen this season that you really like? So many things, but the number one word that always comes to mind with this group is just grit, tenacity. the way I can tell you I've been on the sidelines of football for most of my life and when this defense hits you, you don't just hear it, you feel it. They get after people, the offense and defense both take on the identity of these coaches and they're really fun to watch and to be four points away from perfection on the year, just unbelievable.
Hats off to them. Yeah, historical season for Florence, 9-1 on the year, but everybody's 0-0 now as they get ready for the playoffs and that's what we're going to talk about in just a few minutes. We speak with Kevin Sledge, the strength coach at Florence High School. As a strength coach on game day, what are your responsibilities getting ready? Because I'm sure people think, well, he just does it during the week. You have a lot of responsibilities on Friday. Game day for me starts at 5 a.m.
when I am hand mixing pancake batter and what do we do, 30 dozen eggs to feed these kids the other coaches that they're in there with me. We feed and I always feed the freshmen as well. So we're feeding about 140 kids. I take my breath at about 945 when the freshmen go to class. then I spend an hour cleaning up because these guys, they all have to go teach class. I happen to have an off period that period. So that's the first part of the day. Then when team meal comes together, after the team meal, that's one of the things that I asked Coach Morrison for was I wanted a 30-minute, they come in the indoor, I shut, turn the lights down, off your feet, dial in for this time and start thinking about what you're going to do in the game.
[36:59] And then when we get to game time, my job on the sidelines Friday night is to hold Harold Wisdom back. Congratulations. That's the best work out of my week is trying to pull him off the field during the game. Well, you've done a pretty good job. He hasn't got a 15-yarder yet and that's good. But you know, that's the key is that every coach has responsibility on a Friday night and that's good. Kevin Sledge, the strength coach, with great insight there. And you and I have a great relationship but I tell you, you really even have a greater relationship with the student body.
The students love you, have for many years and if you could say anything to the student body about this game Friday night, what would you say to them? Listen, one individual I want to call out who every game I look in the stands, I got to give a shout out to Noah Yeager. He is a senior baseball player, one of the hardest working human beings I've ever had the opportunity to be around and the kid just, he just radiates energy and all of our students in the stands but my message to them would be, like I've told these kids all week, if you've never sold out for anything in your life, let's sell out for this one.
Let's give it everything we got and let everything take care of itself when the game plays out. I like that. Coach Kevin Sledge, strength coach at Florence High School before I let you go, got to ask a simple question, are you fired up for Friday night? Are you kidding me, man? It's, if you remember being a kid on Christmas Eve, how hard it is to go to sleep or whatever, that's probably where I'm at right now. Couldn't be more excited and just really pumped to watch what these guys can do.
Well, it's opponents 24 hours away, we're kickoff and we're looking forward to it. Thank you for all that you do as a strength coach and we wish you the best, okay? Thank you, sir. I appreciate you. Coach Kevin Sledge, strength coach at Florence High School, you're listening to Florence Falcon football night, Lost Pizza, live tonight on 93.9 The Score. We're back in two minutes. It's time for a Florence Falcons one-minute timeout with head coach Kenny Morrison following Florence's 35-14 win over Fort Payne. Coach had a little bit of a slow start but we recovered pretty well. Yeah, that was real sluggish. We could tell that that bus ride was long for us. We might have ate too much at pre-game meal. We were real bad sluggish.
They were not focused from the time we got them at 12.40 today until the time we kicked off at 7. We knew it was coming and needed to happen for us and it was a good wake-up call for us at halftime. Preseason's over. Real season starts next week. Got a home game. Very proud of that. Tell us about what your next week looks like. St. Clair County at home. Just glad to be home. Again, I've said it every week. We got to worry about us. If we don't fix the little things that we got going on, like I said, it'll be short-lived in the playoffs.
We got to be better. It's Florence in St. Clair County in the first round of the playoffs this Friday night. Airtime 6 p.m. kickoff 7 here on 93.9 The Score. Welcome back. to Florence Falcon football night live at Lost Pizza. Glad you're with us on 93.9 The Score. Florence will be at hosting St. Clair County at Brawley Stadium Friday night, 7 p.m. We need all of Florence to come out and support these Falcons. And you can listen to the game as you download the app on 93.9 The Score. We'll be glad to be with you as well.
Kevin Johnson, voice of the Falcons, glad to be with you. And my favorite part of our Florence Falcon football night is opponents. It's when we have two of our seniors to join us. Let's hear it for Landon Rayner and John Carter Goosby. Let's hear a big round of applause for them here at Lost Pizza. Guys, y'all doing okay? Yes, sir. All right. All right. Good. Fan clubs everywhere signing autographs later. Let's talk about a couple of things. First of all, Landon, what position do you play and what number do you wear?
[42:18] I play free safety and I wear number 15. Okay. Free safety, number 15. And JC, what number do you wear and what position do you play? I play receiver and number 14. All right. All right. Receiver and number 14. That's good. So I got 14 and 15. So I feel like 6'7 almost here. So we're pretty good. We'll get set. We'll be in good shape. Okay. Let's talk about it for a minute. Landon, what are your main responsibilities as a safety? Being able to go in the box, tackle, be able to rob the post.
Like Coach said, be able to guard my man and just play football. Oh, that's good. That's a good answer right there, Landon. Landon Rainer's safety. Landon, let me ask you another question. What was your favorite game this season? You're 9-1 on the air. Did you have a favorite game that you look back and say, man, that was my favorite game we played in? Most definitely one of the shows game. I feel like that was a great game for everybody's team. Yeah, that was one of those where you knew how good you were too and didn't that's a team.
Yes, sir. I like it. Landon Rainer, great answers here with the state, the free safety for Florence High School. John Carter Goosby, he's on the other side. He plays offense. He wears number 14. He plays receiver. But also, JC, you're a punt returner. What are you thinking when they're punting the balls in the air? What is going through your mind? Because there's only a few people that have experienced what you experienced as a punt returner. Well, honestly, just focus on it and catch it and try not to get killed.
You catch the punts first and foremost. Is this something you've been doing most of your life, catching punts? Absolutely not. Just this is my first year doing it. Wow. Well, I want to compliment you. You've done a great job as a punt returner. Thank you. And you also had a great week last week. You've had a great season, but you had a great week last week. Thank you. Catching a touchdown pass, a couple other passes. But it was really special for you because it not only was one of your best games, but it happened at Fort Payne High School where your dad graduated from.
Was that pretty special? It was awesome. To have one of your best games where you graduated? Talk about that. It was a pretty special moment. You know, I've been up there a little bit, but to be there and play there was pretty awesome for me and him. Were there a lot of post-game photographers there? I saw a lot of his old high school buddies and it was good to see everybody. It was a blessing to play there. It was awesome. J.C. Goalsby, Landon Rayner here with us at the Lost Pizza tonight.
We appreciate these guys being with us. Let's talk about it. J.C., I'm going to start one more with you. We're going to get you to do a scout report on each other because you're on offense. You're a receiver. Landon's a defensive back. If you go up against Landon to practice, what makes him such a special safety? He just works hard. He works hard every day, gets better every day, fast, quick, good eyes, good hands, ball player all around. Ball player all around is a great answer.
I like that. Same question to you, Landon. What would be maybe your scouting report here for J.C.? I would say J.C.'s speed and being able to catch the ball through contact. He's one of the fastest series on the team, so I would say his speed. Okay. So y'all have to go up against each other a lot during the season, preseason, everything else. Yes, sir. That's pretty good. Does it make you better as a team facing each other like this, you think? Yes, sir.
I like the great answers from J.C. Gillsby, Landon Rayner who are with us today and that's pretty good. Got another question I want to ask you about that. First of all, is anybody listening tonight that you want to say hi to, Landon? Got anybody? J.C., the same question. Anybody listening to you maybe tonight? My mom and my dad are here. Mom and dad are here. Mom and dad, thank you for being here. They're listening. I know they're proud of you. J.C., what about you?
Same thing. Mom and dad and sister over there. Mom and dad and sister. Hey, way to throw sister in there. That was a good thing. Nice catch right there as well as we talk with these two young men. All right. Got another question I want to ask you real quick. Which coach do you wish you could get to dress out and join your team for one game? If you could get one coach to dress out and be on your team for one game, which coach do you think in his prime would be a great player for you on your team?
I'll start with you. J.C., all right? I'll go first. That guy right there, Coach Driggers. Coach Driggers would be one. All right. What about you, Landon? I'd probably say Coach Drake or Coach Driggers. Coach Drake or Coach Driggers. Okay. All right. That's good. That's good. I like that too, guys. You like that. That's good. All right. Let me ask you another question. Which teammate, and you've got to give me different answers, which teammate is most likely one day to become a head coach of football somewhere?
All right. So you've got to think about your teammates. Which teammate is most likely to become a head coach of football? I'm going to start with you, Landon. I'll let you come up with that. Which teammate will be a head coach one day? Oh. I'll probably say that's a hard question. That is a hard question. That's a tough question. We don't softball these guys. When you come here, man, this is 93-9 score. These are the tough questions. All right. Which teammate do you think would make a good head coach one day?
Oh. I'll probably have to go with Jaden Irons. All right. Jaden Irons. All right. 23 would make a good head. You know what? I can see that. I guess that's a good answer right there. All right. What about it, J.C.? I'm going to go Jacob. Jacob Harper right here. Okay. Jacob Harper. It's in the family a little bit. That's good. Nice call on that. The center there. Well, these guys, J.C. Gillsby and Landon Rayner have really been great for Florence High School. And as seniors, it's hard to believe that you're in the playoffs already as a senior.
[47:35] The season goes by pretty fast, doesn't it, guys? Yes, sir. Yeah, it really does. It really is. All right. Let's talk about this. I'm going to ask you. I'm going to say with J.C. first. Are your classmates at school excited about this Friday night? Have they been fired up? Yes, sir. They can't wait. Hopefully, we got a big crowd. That'd be good. Hopefully, every student's there and supporting us. Landon, can you hear the crowd on Friday night? Can you hear that Broadway stand crowd? Yes, sir.
It's wild. It's wild? Okay, that's good. I like that. We want that tomorrow night as well, and that's pretty good. Last thing, guys, we want to say thank you for being leaders on the team. Thank you for doing a great job tonight on the broadcast. And before I let you go, can I get a Go Falcons? Go Falcons. Let's go Falcons. Let's hear it for Landon Rayner. J.C. Goolsby did a great job here tonight. You're listening to Florence Falcon Football Night. Lost Pizza. We're back in two minutes.

Florence Falcon football night live at Lost Pizza. Kevin Johnson, voice of the Falcons, glad to be with you. Packed house here tonight. It's been a lot of fun and appreciate all the help. Appreciate J.D. Byers coming by, being our special guest who got me started in broadcasting. Appreciate him being our sponsor at State Farm. Also to Jeffrey Jones and River Trust Bank and River Bank and Trust, excuse me, being our sponsor as well. And we want to say thank you to Lost Pizza and I'm going to bring in Coach Kenny Marson, the head coach of the Florence Falcons.
And Coach, we can't say enough about Lost Pizza for doing this for us on Thursday nights. They have been outstanding. Well, shout out to their crew back there. It's been lined up since we got here at 5.30 and they've not stopped back there and the food's put out hot and the kids are loving it. It's a great night. It's a great atmosphere and we started this this year really not knowing how this would play out and it's taken off and it's got legs and now they look forward to it.
The kids look forward to it. The players look forward to it and the fans do too. So we appreciate Lost Pizza and the sponsors for making it possible to bring this each and every Thursday night when we can and looking forward to doing it hopefully a couple more times if we can. We'll talk about that later as well. Coach, the other thing I would say is these two seniors that you just spoke are just representatives of 27 that you have or really 29 when you had the two film guys.
It's a good senior class. It's a great senior class. These guys have been bought in from day one when we first got here five years ago. They were a group that we saw coming. They've stayed together. They've grown. They've got more guys out that weren't playing and so we're excited that this group to see what they're going to do in the playoffs. Coach, and we're speaking with Kenny Marson the head coach of the Florence Falcons. This team's a close team but at the same time this coaching staff is a close coaching staff and I've always said you can tell when a coaching staff is close it sort of just rolls over into the team as well.
[53:00] Have you seen that a little bit? I will go to my grave saying it. If you don't get the coach's office right you'll never get the locker room right and I said that from day one here and if I have done anything at this place I've hired a great staff. They do a phenomenal job and you know recently we're all sitting in there and I thought Decatur was a really special place and I was very fortunate to be there those years but the other day I looked around there's no coaches going home everybody's in there cutting up and talking and it was how I remember it's supposed to be like and we got it right.
And you've got a mix of veteran coaches and young coaches you need that as well and it's really neat to see the respect going both ways so for me I see it from an outsider in I've picked up on that as well as I speak with Coach Kenny Morrison and Coach Friday night Brawley Stadium much of the magic comes from a loud proud crowd I mean that rhymes I know but that's what we need when they come and they bring it from parents from fans from students it's band cheerleaders put them all in there when they all come together as one man it can be a rocking place it can and it'll be hard for St. Clair County to come in here and experience what we're about to bring Adam the band and the cheerleaders and our student body wow hats off to them they will pack the nest out and it will be loud and they'll be hanging over that fence hollering and doing a great job of that and again Coach Miles has come across some cowbells for the stands and it should be really loud I think she's putting a post out on social media to show us when to let the cowbells out just like Mississippi State right that's it that's it but it'll be electric tomorrow night I'm excited for our kids to be able to play in that type of environment and this is tomorrow night is what we've said it should be and we finally got there and we need to show out for the folks that's going to be there for us well I think they will I'm excited about it as well as all of Florence I can't go anywhere in Florence without someone stopping me asking about the team Coach I will tell you that we started this show Florence Falcon football night lost pizza we met a gentleman had his family here I saw that same gentleman this week and he said I hadn't missed a game since I met y'all I had no idea he's been at every game at home he said love it and that's great so I think it's awesome let's talk about before I let you go what do you want to see out of your team tomorrow night to play loose yeah to have fun but I'm going to challenge them tomorrow night we need to play with a swagger we got a really good football team and I've told them that you know there's a lot of coaches that will browbeat the kids down and tell them you know motivate out of fear whatever I've told our guys point blank we're good we're really good when we want to do things the right way and if they'll lock in and they'll play the game the right way and play together as a unit we're scary good yeah I agree I agree with that Coach Kenny Marson the head coach of the Falcons and coach after Friday night tomorrow night 32 teams in class 5A after Friday night we go from 32 to 16 and it sure would be nice to be a part of that 16 let's go out there and let's get that win okay hey we're going to worry about the first one tomorrow night and see what happens that'll be fun coach best of luck let's hear it for the head coach of the Florence Falcons coach Kenny Marson who's done an incredible job this season the Florence Falcons 9-1 on the season get ready to take on the Saints of St. Clair County at Brawley Stadium tomorrow night 7pm we'll have the game for you here on 93-9 the score a big thank you again to Lost Pizza for allowing us to be here to bring the show each and every Thursday night and we appreciate them and their great hospitality and be sure to tell them thank you along with J.D.
