[0:00] Now, get ready to roll, Shoals, Decatur, Athens and all of Northwest Alabama and Southern Tennessee. It's time for the Valley's exclusive FM Sports Voice. The Boomo Bugg Show. Your exclusive inside track to the Tigers, Tennessee and the rest of the SEC. Now your host, Harold Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Play action rolls to his right. Fires back across his body. It's off the receiver and into the hands of the DB. Dijon Lee, great concentration on the part of the Bama quarter. D'Arius Smith had it, bobbled it and then Dijon just took it right off his back. So the tight defense with a takeaway early.

Panthers will punt it away. The first one covered 55 yards and with pressure coming, it's blocked. Bama got a hand on it. A little scramble for the loose ball and the Panthers recover, but the tight will have it inside the 15. Keyon Keeley is the man who came in, got the block and the tie takes over again in great field position. A lot of friends down there, just not from kickoff to final whistle. 35-0 Bama here. Stepping up is Mack. He will run it to the 15, to the 10. Back to the 5. Back to the corner. Touchdown, Alabama.

Ready to tick away and I think EIU is going to just let the final seconds tick away and probably good for everybody. 55-55. Check that. 56-0, your final. I'm a Crimson Tide. Chris Stewart warming up for the biggest dates in the state. Good afternoon. Welcome in. I'm Harold Bugg. That's Brett Beaird. Thanks so much for giving us a free ride around the Tennessee Valley. Brett Beaird, welcome in. Are you ready for a little Iron Bowl action? How are you? Happy Monday to you and the listeners. It should be a fascinating week as always.

Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee have big wins. We'll begin previewing the Iron Bowl throughout the week. UNA unfortunately ends the season with an overtime loss to Southern Union. And UNA Athletic Director Josh Looney announces this weekend that Brent Dierman will return for the 2026 season. Adam is here right now to preview Rival Week and update his SEC power rankings. And he's saying, where the heck did this thing call college football's regular season ever get off to? Adam Spencer is also busy there as a fine columnist and podcast host on Saturday Down South, Saturday Tradition and Sports Betting Dime.

Adam, welcome in. First of all, happy Thanksgiving week. How are you? Hey, guys. Happy Thanksgiving week. I'm doing great over here. Good to hear from you, Adam. Obviously, this is a crazy time of the year. Are we ready for the chaos that could happen this weekend across college football? Yeah, I mean, I think that this is great. I mean, there's still so much to be decided with the playoff. There's a lot of teams that are still in the hunt. So, you know, and then the SEC, there's four teams competing for two spots in Atlanta.

And, you know, I think that there's a lot of talk in the media about, like, well, do you want to skip the championship game and try to, you know, focus on the playoff? And it's just, you know, I think that when you're on the field and you're a competitor and you're playing in the SEC, I think you come to the SEC to compete for national championships, but you also got to win SEC titles. I mean, you know, I think it's still a pretty big deal. And so I'm excited to see which two teams out of this mix of Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss make it to Atlanta.

For Alabama to win the SEC, the road goes through Auburn. Let's talk about that, starting with those guys there, as Auburn found their ace in the deuce. Yeah, that was an incredible performance. I mean, yes, it came against, you know, a lower-level FCS opponent in Mercer, but Mercer's a good FCS squad. You know, I think that, you know, we've seen some of these teams, you know, even Kentucky beat Tennessee Tech, and Tennessee Tech's a heck of an FCS program. So I do think that you're seeing the talent gap on display there between those two levels of football.

But, I mean, that couldn't have gone any better for Deuce Knight. I mean, I think that that sort of dynamic quarterback play is just something that's been lacking for nearly a decade now. I mean, I guess you could say, like, since Nick Marshall left, really, the way that he looked on Saturday. Now, you know, obviously an entirely different animal awaits this week in the Iron Bowl. But, yeah, I mean, that was a good start for Deuce Knight. Adam, as you mentioned, there are so many storylines this week.

Rival week, all the excitement with that. Which teams are going to go to Atlanta in if Alabama and Texas A&M win Saturday? That's who is going to be in Atlanta. Who's going to be in the COP, Vanderbilt, still after another impressive Pavia performance? Did that put him at the top of the Heisman race? You've got all these storylines, yet what overshadows it is, is Lane Kiffin going to go or stay? Yeah, I mean, I think it sounds like we'll get a decision the day after the Egg Bowl here.

[5:32] You know, I don't know. I just don't know how you could leave a program that's having a historically great year. And, you know, maybe it comes down to whether or not they win or lose the Egg Bowl. Like, I don't really know. But, you know, I think that he's built something solid and sustainable there in Oxford. They're showing that they have the money to, you know, pony up to keep him around if he decides to stay. And, you know, I just think we need to fix his college football calendar.

But, yeah, I mean, if I'm LSU or Florida, I mean, I would wait. I mean, I don't want, you know, he's worth waiting for if they think that they can get him. So, I mean, we'll see how it goes. But, yeah, I mean, I think that that is, you're right. That's the biggest storyline in college football right now. If he does go, Ole Miss fans, a lot of them are going to feel like they got to the altar and got jilted. I mean, especially after all the things he did.

And get his past. When you go back, this is not Lane's first rodeo with this topic. Going all the way back to Oakland with Tennessee with you. I mean, it's not uncommon for Lane to do this. But, at the same time, the other side of the coin is they will get rid of you. So, you've got to stay ahead of them. So, we'll let that sort itself out. But, in the meantime, in our zip code, Adam, obviously the Iron Bowl is the top of the jure.

Just looking at it on paper, statistically, Alabama has the edge. Believe it or not, everybody talks about Auburn's defense. They're actually eighth in the SEC. This is eighth ranked in total defense. The number one total defense right now is Alabama. The number eight offense in the SEC is Alabama. The number 11 offense in the SEC is Auburn. To me, it comes down to that T-O word, turnovers. Whoever loses that battle probably will lose the game. Because you can't underestimate the emotions when you play a game down there.

Adam, where do you start breaking down the Iron Bowl? Yeah, I mean, I think that, you know, we also have some potential chaos in the kicking game. Because, you know, Auburn hasn't been fierce in. I mean, he just hasn't been healthy this year. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, everybody's frustrated with the latest Alabama kicker. Well, you know, Will Reichard's in there. You know, I'm a Packers fan. I had to watch him bomb two 50-plus-yard field goals against my Packers yesterday. So, I mean, I think there's a lot of people wishing he still had some eligibility.

But, yeah, Connor Talti's been struggling. Alex McPherson's not fully healthy yet. I mean, it's good to see him out there. It's just, you know, he's got to, you know, use this offseason to continue to put on some weight and stuff so he can kick these longer kicks. So, I mean, I think that, you know, if this game comes down to a field goal, I mean, it's just going to be, we could see anything could happen there. But, yeah, I mean, I think it's going to keep, it's going to take a heroic performance by Deuce Knight to even get it to that point.

Because, yeah, I just don't see Auburn's running game being able to move the ball on Alabama's top-rated defense. I don't see, you know, they're just going to have to make some big plays in the passing game with Cam Coleman and Deuce Knight. You know, we'll see. But I think Alabama, as long as Ty Simpson holds on to the ball, I think they'll take care of business. And the other big drama on the field this week is going to be Texas A&M at number 16, Texas. If the Aggies win, they'll be 12-0, which is an amazing accomplishment for Mike Elko.

But Arch Manning is improving. Again, I know the opponent beating Arkansas 52-37 in their non-existent defense, but Arch seems to have improved in the last month. And if Texas wins that game, it'll be Alabama and Georgia if Alabama wins the Iron Bowl. Your thoughts on the Aggies with the Longhorns later this week? Yeah, I mean, I think that that's going to be an intense atmosphere. Obviously, these rivalry games always are. You know, it's just going to come down to the players. You know, the fans are going to be fired up for it.

But, you know, it's tough, you know, when you have your season basically over with these three losses. I mean, you know, Texas still can play for… It's important to stay. At some point, a three-loss team is going to make the playoff. I don't think it's going to be this year. But, you know, it's never a bad thing to, you know, take care of business and stay as high up in the CFP rankings as you can. But, you know, it's just going to be how motivated are they.

You know, they're not as fired up about the rivalry. Maybe, you know, plenty of them will be. But a lot of those guys didn't grow up in the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry era because it hasn't been played for a long time. So, you know, it'll be interesting to see how the Longhorns come out in that first quarter. And I think that that'll tell us a lot about how the rest of the game goes. But I think Texas A&M, you know, there's no reason to think that they can't take care of business because their offensive line is elite and that kind of neutralizes Texas' strength along the defensive line.

[10:33] Down south, Tennessee got rid of one monkey on their back this past weekend down at Florida. Now comes the Diego show to Knoxville. Who wins the Battle of Volunteer State? I'm going to take Vanderbilt in this one. I think that they can get to the end wins. And I think that they can, you know, win on the road, win on the rock and top. I mean, Diego Pavia is not afraid of any environment. You could throw him into any situation, in any walk of life, and he would act like he owned the place and get the job done.

So, you know, I think that he's earned that respect. I think that he knows that, at the very least, the trip to New York is on the line for him for his Heisman candidacy. And, you know, Vanderbilt, they win this game. I think that they're in the playoff. I don't think you can keep them out if they have 10-2. And, you know, navigating that SEC schedule and picking up a road win at Tennessee to impress the voters right before championship weekend. So, yeah, give me the Commodores, man.

I think that it's their time. Clark Lee is doing a heck of a job. And I think they win on Rocky Top. I'll tell you what, Adam, about a month ago, after Oklahoma lost to Texas and John Mateer was recovering from the hand injury, I don't know if anybody gave them a chance of making the college football playoff. They've got LSU coming up this week. They struggled to beat Western Kentucky 13-10. Does Oklahoma have a good offense? No, but they've got a tremendous defense beating Alabama and beating your Missouri Tigers has repelled them now.

If they can beat LSU, they've got a very good argument to be in the college football playoff. Yeah, same thing with them. If an SEC team gets to 10-2, it should be like that. That's the way that it is. And I think that they can't, you know, LSU, that was such an ugly game. I mean, on one hand, it's impressive that the defense held, you know, one of the top five offenses in the entire country to 10 points. But on the other hand, it's like they also have a pretty terrible defense, and they could only manage 13 points against that.

So, I mean, that was very alarming. I don't know if they'll get to double digits against Oklahoma. I mean, my Missouri Tigers have a much better offense and could only put up six. So, yeah, I think that that's a tough place to play. I think LSU's players are down and, you know, ready to get on with finding out, you know, who the next coach is and who, you know, where they're going to play next year. And, you know, just a side note here, I mean, who had a better weekend than Jimmy Sexton here because LSU struggled.

Florida got blown out. Ole Miss has been there. You know, they have to offer up $100 million to keep laying around. So, I mean, it's probably, you know, Jimmy Sexton's bank account is about to get even bigger. And I think that he had a pretty good weekend back and watching all that. Adam, no question about it, but it should be a fast and handy week. Always enjoy beginning of the week with you to review your power rankings. Rival week, we always look forward to it. The only bad thing about it is, Adam, it's the last regular season weekend, heaven forbid, in college football.

Listen, happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Have a great week. And it's going to be fun to watch off-the-field coaching and on-the-field the rivals. Yeah, have a good weekend, guys. Have a good Thanksgiving. I appreciate it. Thank you so much, Adam. Adam's been for busy there at Saturday Downs Town. Coming up, what's going on in Lane Kiffin's world? I think it's safe to say the only man we know in Mississippi with more money than Jimmy Sexton is Max Howell.

Would you totally agree with that? That's a possibility, yes. And Max probably is the possibility, knows all the stories when it comes to what's going on in his neck of the woods. Max Howell, he's been there and done that behind the mic. He's a sports pioneer in a thing called Sports Talk in the entire southeast on the sideline with a whistle with Ole Miss, which we're going to be talking about in Florida State. Max Howell, welcome in. How are you? I'm doing great, guys. If I'd have been born a little bit later, I might qualify for that first place.

I was joking with my wife out there. Listen, the last job I had on the field was at Ole Miss. They certainly enjoyed it. It probably could have stayed longer than I did, but other things got in the way. But the fact is, that job at that time, I made $65,000 a year in a car. That job today, same job. I went by a couple weeks ago. I paid $310,000 now. Can you reapply, Max? I tried to. And they asked me to verify my age. I said, you know, I don't think you're quality.

Not that they would discriminate or anything like that, Max. No, it would never happen out there, nor. Well, what I tagged in there, I tagged in there was a burial policy. Was that collateral? Yeah, that was it. Good luck with that. It's in my pocket, and I'm six feet under. Exactly right. Max, what's going on with Lane? Is he going to pick up his millions there in your state of Mississippi, or is he going to get out of there and head on to greener pastures? Let me say this about him, about the way Lane has handled this and the University of Mississippi.

[20:50] I think the speculation has done nothing but good things for Ole Miss. They've got national publicity many times a day from people that maybe just were, you know, just had been introduced to the name more than anything else. But, you know, from everything, I've made a couple trips over and talked to several people. I think, literally, he's going to make an announcement after the game, well, the game's Friday, but he'll make it sometime Saturday. It appears, to me, he's going to take the LSU job. The reason is, two things.

One is, he doesn't think it's going to take him too long to build the program to a championship level. And he knows LSU can do that already. And the reason he's scratched off, I was told, he's scratched off the Florida deal is too much politics, internal politics. And LSU's not with the governor? Well, the governor's out of it right now. They have hired the president. And the deal, the contract will be with the president. That's what he has with Ole Miss now. He doesn't have one with the F.A. department.

I mean, they just, the advisory group is all they are. And they reap the benefits from it, the cash benefits from it. So, he's matured enough to know how to play the system. I really thought, two weeks ago, that he would probably stay there. He let all the footballers go back and forth for a while. And then he's going to stay, maybe get another three or four years, then go to the NFL. I think that's his ultimate goal, is to go. And right now, I mean, you guys probably read already, you know, that three NFL teams go off of a job now.

The Giants, and the Dolphins, and the folks in Nashville. So, you know, you go take a look at that. The job at LSU that they released here this morning, the contract, is a $90 million contract for seven years. So, that's $13 million a year. He's making about nine, nine and a half right now. And he could get it up to a little over 10, you know, how far he would go in the playoffs. So, he's going to stay, what his contract calls for, he's going to stay the regular season's over, make the announcement.

And, of course, they'll want him gone after that. They've already got a pecking order of people they go off the job to. John Summer are the first on their list, who they like to have. And John will fit well there, I think. But also, he's number one on Auburn's list also. So, I mean, having been in both those situations, I'd take Ole Miss in a heartbeat. That's Jimmy Buffett down there. I'm telling you. You're right. I mean, nobody knows who's calling the shots. I mean, it makes change on a daily basis down there.

There's just no leadership whatsoever. And I always laugh and make fun of him, but it's true. When Bobby Latter was in charge, but it wasn't any doubt who made the decision. And Pat Dyer. He would Pat Dyer, absolutely. That was the decision-makers, period. Now, we'll forget the story of Latter. The student newspaper had written a derogatory story about him, about his influence on the department. Not only did he shut the newspaper down, he dissolved the journalism department. He just bought it. He just went through the whole thing.

He said, I'm going to go right to the root of this someone. But, anyway, that's the name of the game right now, it was all about the money and all about the changing coaches. And I think that 12, I think another one resigned yesterday in California. So, that's 13 major jobs open right now. And really, nobody, James Franklin got him a job. So, other than that, I don't know anybody else is on the wait list of what Lee's going to do. Yeah, you're exactly right. Max, the three of us have followed the Iron Bowl for a year or two.

Alabama and Auburn taking care of business over the weekend. Alabama, last Eastern Illinois, 56-0. And Auburn, 62-17 over Mercer. Max, both these teams, when they play their A game, are pretty good. But when they struggle with turnovers, Exandra, we'll see. Max, how do you see Saturday coming out in Auburn? Well, first of all, the Boer and the group at Alabama, they think they were in a hostile environment when they played for the national championship when he was in Washington. It's nothing like what will go on this weekend at Auburn.

I can tell you. They're going to be completely amazed. And if that poor kicker from Alabama, if he got upset about one high snap, I mean, somebody break through and they'll slap that ball right through his face if he's not careful. I mean, it's just so many different things. Alabama's got to play their best ball game. I'm telling you guys, Ty Simpson can't be throwing interceptions. You know, he can't be slow. He better have a receiver open when he turns loose the ball, and it better be within about three seconds after he takes a snap.

[26:10] Auburn has nothing to lose. I mean, it would not surprise me with Alabama's passing game that they don't line up and drop three and rush eight as opposed to dropping eight and rushing three on most good quarterbacks. I mean, I just think they picked up. I don't know what's happened to Simpson, but he slowed down in his decision-making. I don't know where it's the opposing team changing the defense on him after the snap or what. But if you notice, it takes him a second or two longer to decide where he's going to throw it.

And that, you know, that's a plus for the defense. Well, Auburn certainly, you know, if they know anything about secondary coverage, they know that's the way they can slow Alabama down. But I think it puts the line at five or five-and-a-half or something like that today. I think it's going to be that close. I really do. And Alabama by far has got the best. It's got more players and better players. It exhibited that all year long. But this is a different ballgame, I'm telling you. The last game I covered for the radio station was the Big Six.

And that was against Coach Saban when he had the big lineman out there thinking he was going to get a field goal out of it. And they gave up a touchdown out of the thing. He lost the ballgame. So, you know, I don't think my opinion is that Coach Saban and his staff just have never experienced little things like that. They've just, you know, they've cruised through on talent so far. Now, this one is going to take emotion and coaching to win that football game if that'll ever come through.

I think they'll win it. But I think they're going to have to work hard for it. And I don't think they will ever have been in an environment like they're going to see it all there tonight. Good points about Ty. But I think two things on Ty. Number one, I think one of the differences is now that the coordinators know that until they establish a running game, they're just going to key on that part. And I think Saturday was the wash. They didn't worry about passing.

One of those was a Hail Mary interception. The other thing, they weren't going to come in that game passing anyway. They came out of that game doing what they wanted to do, eight rushing touchdowns. So, to me, that was a wash on Saturday. But I see the point. But let me ask you this as far as if everything apples to apples, your thoughts. And then the other side of the coin is look at Auburn. Who's going to be the quarterback? I mean, you bring a kid out of the bullpen, and he is like a Hall of Famer in game one.

They've already got him going to the College Football Hall of Fame down there every one game. So, what are you going to do at quarterback? Well, if Auburn plays him, Alabama will just take a middle linebacker and put a spy on him. I truly believe that. What he'll do if a guy is going to stay in the back, he'll play his own defense in the middle right there. Keep the tight end from running cross patterns. So, I mean, that's an easy way to defend somebody like that.

But I don't know that they've prepared for that. I'm sure they had the tape from this past weekend. But how many days did they work this week? Will they work this week? Two days, probably. They'll probably go out in shorts today. It'll probably hit tomorrow and Wednesday, and then short Friday. And, you know, drive down on Friday afternoon and get up Saturday and go to play. Unless it's a Saturday night ballgame. So, I don't know if I would wait to come to Birmingham, maybe drive to Birmingham, come over down to Birmingham and spend the night there just to give the kids a break and then take them down to Auburn on Saturday morning.

Because that town's going to be crazy. They don't even know who they're going to be. I know they've got Judd Summerall tagged as their number one choice. But if Kiffin leaves, Summerall's going to have a choice of two or three schools. So, whether he takes Auburn or not under the conditions that Auburn is in right now, I don't know. I got to do him pretty well when he was at Troy. He's a, you know, he's an extremely aggressive guy. He's smart as a whip. And he's been successful every way he's been.

He'll make a good football coach at the SEC. I'd heard from Dave Wood, though, he's going to go to Kentucky. And after he got beat again, I thought at one time it was going to be up to him to retire. But it looks like Dave, he may, you know, he may not be ready to retire, but they go retiring. And if they do, that means he does a job on me. He decides to accomplish. Yeah, absolutely. Max is Diago Apavia, the SEC Offensive Player of the Year.

They beat Kentucky, the four mentioned, as you talked about, easily 45-17. They've got Tennessee, another rival game this week. Apavia is 33-39, five touchdowns against Kentucky. He's had an amazing year. And they also have an outside shot at actually getting in the college football playoff. We'll see that, again, when you get over four SEC teams. I wonder about that. Max, your thoughts about Vandy and Tennessee. Well, I mean, I think to make all that happen for him and really for Vanderbilt, I think they need to beat Tennessee.

[31:32] And, you know, I don't know. They've shown, you know, streaks of almost what I almost classify as greatness in comparison to what they did, you know, throughout history. But the fact is that Eiffel's a sharp guy there, I'll tell you, particularly in his passing game. And if you go rush three and drop eight, he's going to throw it short or run the football. If you go rush eight and drop three, he's going to throw it. And I think certainly they know that. But the fact is, I look for that.

It might be one of the best ballgames Saturday, to see, to tell you the truth. I think it's going to be two good coaches and two good teams fighting for, you know, for some recognition, if nothing else. You know, where they – Tennessee should have been better. Tennessee should have never lost a couple of ballgames that they lost. But the fact is, they did, and they are where they are. But the fact – also, didn't I see this morning where they gave Heupel a lifetime extension contract on his original contract?

I think I read that somewhere this morning, that the president met with him after they hammered Florida this weekend. Because they – well, how many years have they been since they beat Florida in Gainesville? Like – Twenty-two. Twenty-two. So, maybe they got them all excited. You know, maybe they think they're going to get another team in the SEC to get the playoffs. I don't know. But they've done a good job with that program. And that ballgame, I think, will challenge them this coming Saturday. I really – look, you know, we talk about going from eight to nine.

Five games and what that does to the programs and all that stuff. The SEC, right now, is by far the best conference in the country. They may not have enough quality at the top like some teams, but for the entertainment, for the fan base in this part of the country, there's not a better conference in the SEC. Next year, the next four years, with the rotation on the schedule so everybody's going to play each other, then I don't know how much more the SEC office could have done.

I mean, they could have said, yes, stay eight, you might get one or two at the playoff. You might, you know, revert back to having a little more quality in some of the teams. But playing that, you're going to have one or two losses. I don't look for the SEC to teams in the conference, maybe ever again, to tell you the truth. Max, I'm like you, I don't know how this selection committee is going to handle three losses. No one's done it yet. We'll see when they go to nine, how they handle that.

Max, always enjoy the insight into rival week. It's going to be a fascinating week with on and off the field. Listen, happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Hope it's a great one. Let's do this again next Monday. I'll be glad to do it. I'm going to make a trip to Columbus, South Carolina. Welcome back in again. Happy Thanksgiving week to you, which means we're getting ready for the year's biggest date in the state, a.k.a. the Iron Bowl in Brian Matthews' backyard. He's a senior editor down there right now at AuburnSports.com. Brian, welcome in. Who's having a more nervous week, Jackson Arnold or Tom Turkey? How are you? I mean, I don't think Jackson Arnold's nervous. You know, it's going to be Ashton Daniels and Deuce Knight will be the top two quarterbacks going to that game. So Ashley can just, you know, work on being a good teammate and supporting, you know, the guys in that room as they were supporting him through the first, you know, seven, eight weeks of the season.

Let's talk about that. Obviously, Jackson's going to, as we implied at the top, he's going to be a bystander, I'm quite sure. But talk to us about what will be the case. Obviously, over the weekend, did anyone see, they knew this kid had talent, and we know the competition was what it was. But where do you start breaking it down, Brian, for the folks who didn't see the Deuce Show? It was amazing. Honestly, I had no idea he could run like that. I was that athletic, and I thought he was incredible.

401 yards of total offense, which ranks in the top ten, I believe. Just, you know, two weeks after, Ashton Daniels put up 424, yeah, I think it was 424, which was third all-time. So, amazing job. You know, that first play of the game, fastest touchdown in Auburn history since Cadillac against Alabama, was that 2003? I know I was there in the press box watching that. I think it was 2003. But, yeah, incredible job by him. Ran the ball incredibly well. Ran the offense well. I thought once he settled in there, he threw the ball really well, had that 91-yard pass, which is, I think, is the third longest in Auburn history, the longest by a freshman.

[42:01] So, just, you know, sits on the bench all year, plays 14 plays, I think, gets ball state, comes in, and is already breaking records in game one. That says a lot about him. It says a lot about Derek Nix and the job he's done over there. What did you say about Hugh Freeze, the question, Brian? There's a lot about that, too. Yeah. I've said enough. Got money to spend, you ain't spending it, right? Yeah. That's right. Let me ask you about, to me, the real winner in the last two weeks or the last two games is Derek Nix, Auburn's offensive coordinator.

And you mentioned this in Monday Musings in the previous five games with Hugh Freeze. Auburn gained 1,400-yard total yards, 73 points combined in the two games since Nix took over, 1,100 yards and 100 points combined. Now, obviously, we'll see where all the coaching goes, you know, which assistant coaches go or stay. But I tell you one thing, even if Derek Nix moves on, he's going to make a lot more money than he's making now. Yeah, and I think it's more than that for Nix because I think it's time for people to look at him as a potential full-time offensive coordinator and or a head coach and not just a guy who's a really good recruiter or who's a good part of the staff, you know, or as a coordinator and name only.

You know, I just think getting caught in that is unfair to a lot of coaches. I think Derek Nix has been in that now, but it's time for people to show him more respect and to put him up a little bit higher on their boards for potential coaching candidates in this cycle and future cycles. I think he's done a tremendous job. And another thing I've heard from behind the scenes, he's also really good at organizing and motivating and doing all those coaching things you have to do to get your team ready to go out there and perform well.

Brian, what's going to happen Saturday night in your backyard? To be honest, I would not be surprised with an upset. I mean, Auburn had a couple of near upsets the last two times. Alabama came to Jordan Hare. This is a better Auburn team from a talent standpoint, not from a record standpoint. Certainly a team that's built some momentum up over the last couple of weeks. And a team that I think is going to be playing in an incredible atmosphere. I would expect Jordan Hare to be absolutely peak Jordan Hare.

First night game, I think, since 2007 for an Iron Bowl at Jordan Hare. So that's a big plus. You know, I just, we'll see. Alabama, there's no question in my mind, it's a better team. They have a tremendous quarterback in Ty Simpson who, if he is able to sit back there, will absolutely destroy Auburn's secondary. So that's got to be job number one. For this Auburn team when it comes to game plan and this one up. But if they can find a way to disrupt him and get him off of his game a little bit, I think Auburn's got a chance to go in there and compete, certainly.

And make a game of this and get to the fourth quarter. Maybe this time they can not give up a, you know, a four-time pass on, you know, fourth and 31 or whatever it was. Talk to us about the offensive line. These quarterbacks do well when they have time. At the D1 level, a lot of quarterbacks can do well when they've got time. The question is, how good is your offensive line to keep the big uglies off of them? We know what it was against Mercer. How does this O-line match up with Alabama's defense?

I mean, it's okay. I mean, last time I checked, Auburn was still one of the worst teams in the country as far as giving up sacks. Now that's changed. You know, sitting Jackson Arnold, who was a big part of that, I think. But it doesn't change. The offensive line played a part in that, too. So that's still an issue, I think, to deal with. But I think they're doing a much better job of getting the ball out quicker and making better decisions and having better game plans to cut down on that.

But I don't think Auburn's offensive line has suddenly turned to the best in the country. But certainly better under their scheme. And, you know, I don't – you know, I would expect them to fall apart. I think they've really struggled on the road with the false starts and the penalties. You would hope that's not nearly a big issue at home, although they're still going to have some because it seems like they have some in every game, no matter where it is. Be mad. Kendrick Falk left the game with the injury on the first defensive series against Mercer.

What have you heard, if anything, about his status of Sandra Day and also Sylvester Smith, the backup safety hit with a targeting call in the second half. And, you know, what happens when that comes about is you miss the first half of the next game. What are their status? Yeah, we'll get an update on Kendrick Falk here in about an hour. I have not heard anything from a negative standpoint about his status. So that leads me to believe that it's probably okay. But I've been surprised before, so we'll see.

But I think if I would have heard – or we would have heard something had it been different. But we should know much more here coming up soon. It'll be interesting on Slash Smith. He's Auburn's main nickel, much better against the run than he has been in coverage all year. So perhaps this gives an opportunity to somebody else to step in there who can cover a little bit better against an offense that loves to throw the ball and has some really good receivers along with, you know, one of the best quarterbacks in the country.

[47:30] So it may not be that big of an issue for Auburn there. We'll see. I don't want to downplay it too much. But that's certainly been an issue for Auburn. The biggest issue on defense is their inability to cover slot receivers and to handle passing offenses when they spread them out and put more than two guys out there, you know, into patterns and such. And we'll see if they can adjust to what Alabama's going to do this coming up Saturday night. That's the old saying, you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks.

Looks like Auburn right now has two that are just foaming at the mouth to get rocky. Will we see quarterbacks rotating in and out Saturday night for Auburn? Oh, no, absolutely not. I think it's going to be Ashton Daniels will be the starter and will play. And if for whatever reason they need Deuce or what have you to step in and help out, you know, I think he'll be available. But I just think it's just a normal situation where Ashton's the starter and Deuce is the backup and we'll see how the game goes.

B-Man, I know you've been asked 150 times the last two or three weeks who's going to be the next coach at Auburn. Lane Kiffin is the bottleneck here. He's going to be announcing, I believe, Saturday or at least that's what we've heard. Who's the leader in the clubhouse and what have you heard? Again, any new potential candidates? And I know, again, everybody's waiting to hear what Lane's going to do. Yeah, and, you know, I'm not going to change my feeling what it was, I guess, three or four weeks ago.

And, you know, to me, it may start, I mean, it finishes like where it started, and Jon Sumrall, he was the leading candidate for me as soon as this job opened up. And I still feel that way. I'm not making any promises or not, you know, stating that he's going to be the guy for certain. But that's how it looks to me until I hear differently. And I think there are other coaches still in the mix, including Durkin and Dillingham and, you know, maybe a couple others out there.

But I just think, you know, I think it's Sumrall's until it's not. So we'll see how it goes. Tulane right now is on track to play in the AAC championship game, potentially be the top G5 team in the playoffs. So that might muddy it up a little bit, but we'll see. It's also possible they can announce him. He can still coach Tulane. Well, we'll just have to see how it goes, if that is indeed their choice. But this has been the most straightforward, the least, you know, outside noise coaching search that Auburn's had since I've been coming to the team for 25 years.

Because there's no question, it's not even close, how much more subdued this has been compared to other years. Yeah, subdued's a good thing, quite frankly. And listen, if you're a basketball fan, the next three days, Las Vegas, Auburn set to open tonight. Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee are in Las Vegas, one of a multitude of teams. In fact, I think Tennessee's playing right now, but Auburn's scheduled to play Oregon at approximately 7, I believe, on True TV. And then tomorrow they're taking on number 7, Michigan, at 7.30 on TNT.

Should be a fun three days before Thanksgiving for the SEC in Las Vegas. It should be. This is a great field again. Auburn is going to get a chance to play a really good Oregon team. This probably should be a top 25 team and a really big team. They've got a big center and a big power forward. It's going to be a size advance for them. And we don't know if Auburn's best player, Keyshawn Hall, what his status will be for the tournament, how much or if he can play at all.

We'll see. He will be there. He'll be a tip-off type decision. And then Michigan is another highly ranked team. I think they're a top 15, top 10 type team right now. So, two more good tests for Auburn, and then they'll play a third game out there either Wednesday or Thursday before coming home. So, yeah, this is a terrific test for them. You know, they came up a point short against Houston, you know, a week ago or a little bit more than a week ago, and now they get a couple more big tests.

And isn't it amazing? We're a week away from National Signing Day Wednesday, and we haven't mentioned a word about it. There's so many things going on. Yeah, that's just the way it is now. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Listen, happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I know it's been a special year for you with your daughter's wedding and marriage. 18-19 News. Standing in for Andrea Tice, I'm Garrison Hardy. Auburn kept its postseason hopes alive with a dominant 62-17 win over Mercer on Saturday, powered by the debut of freshman quarterback Deuce Knight. Knight put on a historic performance rushing for 162 yards, throwing for 239, and accounting for six of Auburn's eight touchdowns. He becomes just the fourth Auburn quarterback ever to rush for more than 100 yards in his first start, joining the likes of Cam Newton and Phil Gargis. With the win, Auburn improves to five and six, and now let's beat number 10 Alabama in next Saturday night's Iron Bowl to reach bowl eligibility.

Thank you so much for giving us free ride around the Tennessee Valley. Of course, Thanksgiving, just about three days away. Christmas Eve, one month away. And if you are a recruiting fanatic, Christmas is one week and two days away. I think Tom Lemmy might agree with that. He is the recruiting guru, been there and done that longer than anybody out there with a living report on CBS, the sports network, and also the prep football report.

Tom, welcome in. How are you? I'm doing great, guys. How are you guys doing? Man, we're doing all right. Tom, we can't think of a better person to ask this question to. You've got more college football knowledge in a pair of your old gloves than some would say in the collective brain with that college football committee. In your opinion, Tom, who are the top five, top ten teams in college football right now? You know, I think right now they've got it right. I think Ohio State's probably the best team talent-wise, but you never know.

And then I would say Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia for sure. And then after that, well, the rising team is Notre Dame, but they lost to one point in the last play of the game, I think, to A&M, and they lost to Miami early on. Since then, they've been killing everybody, so they're probably on the rise, but I don't know if they're talented. They're not as talented as Georgia, Alabama, or Ohio State. They're probably, talent-wise, the number four team. I think Indiana really improved from last year, and they possibly, but it'll come down to when they play Ohio State and see if they're for real.

And then Oregon, I thought, might be slightly overrated. I saw the USC game this week, and I saw them when they lost to Indiana. Talent-wise, they were way behind Indiana. But Indiana's just got great coaching. So I think it's really Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, that mixture of those three teams right now. Let me ask you about your top five teams in recruiting. It's an interesting discrepancy. USC has got 35 commits. Oregon's got 19. Indiana's looking at a composite of some of the rankings, Georgia 31, Notre Dame 27, Ohio State 28, Alabama 23.

[1:03:33] It would be Wednesday a week away from National Sunday Day. Who is on Tom Lemme's top five recruiting rankings? Well, it would be USC and Alabama. And USC, you're right. Only because look at the numbers they got, but they do have really good players, especially, I think, nine defensive linemen, which is what they need. If you watch USC, they're top-heavy in offense, and their defense always seems to have problems. But you've got to go when you have 35 commitments, and you've got to go with them, number one, of that many four- and five-star players.

But Alabama, I think, is a solid number two. Then after that, it'll come down to signing day between Notre Dame, Oregon, Georgia, and Ohio State, who's going to be three, four, five, and six. I think those are the teams, and I was really impressed with Texas A&M's class. They've come up. I really think it's solidly better than Texas, although I think some people might have Texas ranked higher. But I do think that I was very impressed with A&M. And Tennessee, you know, not doing as good as they thought they would be on the field, still a very solid class.

So I think those are the best teams. And you always watch out Alabama if they can land us. There aren't many guys left, to be honest with you. They might top 100. I think everybody's committed. So it looks like USC will probably wind up number one just based on sure numbers. Get the very latest and best when it comes to recruiting with Tom Lemming there at CBS Sports. Tom, let's talk a little bit more about Alabama and a couple of guys. Obviously, you look at the list.

And one guy that really stands out. We've been around the rodeo a few years, too. And we ask about running backs. And when they look at Xavier Crowell, everybody just rants and raves. You've got the national seat at the table. How good is Crowell, in your opinion? And let's talk about a guy in her own backyard here, Maury Johnson out of Muscle Shoals. They don't grow them like Maury that awful. But your thoughts about those two? I think Crowell, when I saw him, I was really impressed with him.

It's a good year for running backs, too, nationally. Good backs, but I think he's got all the tools. He's also got a good pair of hands. And I think he's a guy that's a well-rounded running back. And, you know, what's funny is, to me, Alabama is a great football state for talent. I went through it three times. I didn't stop to see you guys, but I was there a couple weeks ago. I had a big group meet me in Starkville. And I went through Alabama first, and then another group meet me in Tallahassee.

And I came back through Alabama that way just in the past five weeks or so. But I've always been impressed with the talent in the state of Alabama. The past couple years, defensive linemen, but running backs, too. They've got some really good ones. And I think, if you ask me, I think he would probably have to rank among the very, at least the top three or four in the country. But I really like, you know, he's about 205 pounds. He's stronger than most of the other backs that I've seen.

So he's a big-time guy. Let me ask you about two. I don't know if you've seen the two guys from Muscle Shoals. Harold mentioned Maury Johnson for Muscle Shoals. In fact, they're playing in the semifinals. In fact, Friday night, they're going to be hosting Clay Chalkville. Foster, Keebee Foster is a commitment to Arkansas. And he had two interceptions Friday night. And then Maury Johnson is a four-star commit to Alabama. He's tremendous, and particularly when he's focused. Your thoughts? I don't know if you've seen the two stars from Muscle Shoals, but what have you heard about him?

Well, I knew about him. I didn't see him. But I think Johnson, as an athlete, defensive end, outside linebacker, actually can play tackle, too. I think he's more what I heard about him is like a versatile guy who can play anywhere along the defensive line. He's got a great first step. He's the kind of ball player that is really impressive. They think in college he's going to even be a better ball player. So I should have gone. I didn't go to Muscle Shoals this year. It's one of the few towns I didn't go to, mainly because the way my path takes me to Starkville and then to Florida, from Dallas, straight up towards the east.

I did cover all the eastern areas. Auburn's got a ball player. High school Auburn and a lot of top players in that area. And you know what's funny is that Alabama is one of the states that has a lot of top ball players in small towns, and I thought I hit most of them. My buddy, Ronnie Cottrell, coaching, he left Mobile Christian, so he's a little bit farther north there, and we talked about him. And then I had to go see Rivers' son, also Gunner, and I just got my way through.

He first cut it through the central part, then the eastern part. But I didn't go northeast, I mean northwest. Next year I'll hit Muscle Shoals. Tom, for someone who played ball in high school and college, and if you know anything about the roads around Starkville, I can understand why you didn't make it. It's not exactly full of interstates to this, so I guarantee you I understand where you're coming from. Speaking of the Magnolia State, Tom, obviously your thoughts about Lane Kiffin. And just everybody says, well, how's that going to shake up recruiting?

[1:08:50] Well, I think one of the chips that's on the table for Lane to close the deal is he's not so much interested in the four and five stars. He'll take them out of high school. He wants to know how much coin you got to go buy players. That's more like his philosophy, NFL type. Your thoughts about Lane, and to be part two of that, Tom, here we are a week in some change away, and a lot of these guys at Alabama, other places, Auburn, how does that affect the closing deal with some of these key guys on the fence right now?

Well, I think NIL is the thing, but with Lane, I've known Lane Pence. He just started out with Pete Carroll, and then I know when he took the Raiders job, after the Raiders let him go, he called me and asked me if I'd call the AD at Minnesota for him. I had called the week before with Tim Brewster, and then I called for Lane, and they gave the job to Tim. And I've known him, you know, Tennessee, all the places Lane Bent. And one thing about him, he's one of the top offensive minds in the country.

He is a very good football coach, but he got even better when he started working with Nick Saban. I always thought he had flaws, but after Nick, he's turned out to be one of the better coach recruiters in the country. There are some guys that are great recruiters, some guys that are great coaches, but, you know, Nick was the best I've seen ever since I started. And Lane's learned a lot from him. Sarkisian did a lot. The other guys did, but they still have flaws. But I don't know if Lane's got too many flaws left in his game.

And if he does go to Florida or LSU, he's going to make them a powerhouse because you're right. He worries about how much the money in LSU and Florida has limited funds, obviously, if they're going to pay him. I would imagine how much he would get if they gave Kelly $100 million. Maybe they'll give Lane $200 million. But that kind of money in LSU, Jerry DeNardo, when you said coach, told me that money has never been a problem at that school. So I do know that's a fact, and I do think Lane is sort of a coach that I think, you know, he'll move on.

I don't think he's loyal to anywhere. So I do think that if they come up with the right amount of money, either Florida or LSU will get them. Let me ask you about two quarterbacks who have committed to Alabama, and we talked to you in the summer, and you're a very high on Jack Thamala out of Nebraska. He's playing for a second state championship. In fact, tomorrow, he's going for 3,100 yards, 51 touchdowns, and four interceptions. And then Trent Seaborn at Thompson. He has been starting since the eighth grade.

It seems like he's been there 10 years. He is going to be playing for another state championship in two weeks, and he's had an amazing – they beat Central Phoenix City Friday night. He was 15 out of 25 for 230. But I know you – in the past, you've been high on both of these guys. Tell them your thoughts. I gave Jet five stars when I saw him and stopped by his school and watched him on film, and he's got a great arm and good feet. He's a smart kid. I think he could be a Heisman candidate in a few years.

I really like Jet. This is why he's committed to Iowa State, too. And most people – everyone else had him as a three-star, a low three-star. But when I saw him, that's why I think it's important to go see these guys in person. And I really came away impressed with him. Even though he's committed to Iowa State, I gave him five stars based on production, size, athletic ability, and projection. And the same thing, when I stopped by Thompson High School in Alabastery just about a month ago, when I saw the same for Seaborn, I've been – since he was in eighth grade, I remember him on social media and all that stuff.

And that program has got more talent than any other program in Alabama. They've got a lot of big-time guys. And he's a leader. I noticed the coach brought out about 12 guys for me to meet last month. But Trent was sort of like the leader. One the guys look up to, and he's a kind of polished quarterback. He's been around the position so long. So I think that – I think Jeff's probably got more athletic ability and more arm strength. Sometimes it just comes down to which guy has got the poise and has got the attention of the head coach's system.

And I think they've got two really good ones, two of the very best in the country. Yeah, Tom, that's about how many Thompson hands as far as Division I prospects. That doesn't surprise me. You mentioned Tennessee earlier. They've got two five-stars, a wide receiver, Tristan Keyes. Faison Brandon is much hair of the quarterback, too. Always enjoy the conversation with you. Certainly wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving. Where can we find Tom Lemming on National Signing Day on TV or online? Where can we get online, Tom?

Obviously, I know the magazine's out with all the players. What's your schedule now for National Signing Day? I'll probably be in Texas doing a show. I don't know what time it'll be on or anything, but I'm doing that. And also, I'm doing the U.S. Army game on the 21st. So I've spent some time in Texas. I've already did a big thing at A&M before that way. I invited 86 players and 82 showed up. So it worked out good for the underclass. And I'm doing a lot of radio shows as I drive.

[1:14:12] So if I don't drive off a cliff, you can hear me just about any place in the country. Tom, please don't let me go to the party there. I appreciate it. Hey, listen, I echo Brad Sinema's happy Thanksgiving to you and safe travels out there, Tom. Well, thanks, guys. I appreciate it. Take care. Same to you. Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you, bud. Here are our post-game thoughts from Alabama head coach Kalen DeVore after the Crimson Tide picked up a 56-0 win against Eastern Illinois. It's good to get a lot of guys out there today and, of course, get the win and just a good week of practice, you know, good locker room downstairs, excited about a few things. One, getting a lot of guys on the field, had some shout-outs to some of the walk-ons in particular who put in a lot of work, guys who, you know, got some stops and put the ball in the end zone.

And then, you know, just looking ahead, too, you know, to the excitement of what lies ahead with the Iron Bowl and just, you know, the opportunities that are in front of us. And so, you know, a lot of the things that we would have goals for are all there. And, you know, the things we set out to do at the beginning of the season are even way back in January right in front of us. So go attack it, and I know we're going to do that.

I'll have more in the moments. This year, we honor the most important anniversary ever, an event that reshapes civilization as we know it. V-Man, welcome in. How are you? Good, guys. How we doing? Hey, Boone. Well, we're doing all right. V-Man, how much weight did Josh Heupel and the Tennessee football program lose this week after getting a big monkey off their back at Florida? Well, pretty big. You know, the Knoxville Zoo just introduced a newborn baby gorilla. So maybe whatever one of those ways when it's an adult, maybe that would be the equivalent. But for sure, I mean, everyone was sick of talking about it. They were certainly sick of hearing about it.

You know, many of them mentioned those guys. A lot of them weren't even, you know, weren't even born the last time Tennessee won there. And, you know, a lot of players hadn't, you know, hadn't even been there, you know, since they had been playing every other year. And now they won't go for another four years. So with the new schedule. So it's not anything that they had deep attachment to, but they still knew about. And, yeah, it meant a lot for sure. They certainly know how important that is for the fan base.

It was a round to begin with. Tennessee gets off to a 31-0 lead, outgained Florida 452-261. They ran the ball very effectively for 248 yards. Aguilar, 10 out of 10 on his first to begin the game. Defense did pretty well. It was just a complete team win. It was. And, you know, some people couldn't nitpick that they had scored in the second half. And, you know, they should have continued to put more steam on and things like that and separated from Florida. But, you know, the game was shortened in the second half.

And, you know, Tennessee still, by far, that was their most, as you mentioned, most complete game. You know, the tackling was better. It was sharp. And the key was going in. I know I talked about it on the air. The key was a great start. And it's exactly what they got. You know, a team like that, you want to demoralize early, demoralize them, the here we go again, and then demoralize the fans so they check out. And so they did exactly that. Florida is their worst quarter was the fourth quarter.

I think going into the game, they were outscored, like, 75 to 27 in the fourth quarter. They didn't have any fourth quarter comebacks, any of that stuff. So Tennessee did exactly what they needed to. Really liked the fact that Tennessee took advantage, took what Florida was giving them. Florida was playing with two high safeties. They were given the numbers advantage of the box to Tennessee. And rather than trying to press the issue, throwing the ball down the field, just ran the ball. And they were without starting guard Wendell Moy, Jr.

And David Sanders went out in the game once, and they didn't bring him in. They brought in a second-year offensive lineman, Bennett Warren, for a couple snaps. They were without the really good blocking tight end and starting tight end Miles Kitzelman. But they were able to stay consistent and true with the run game. And those are going to open things up for them. They never really had to throw the ball down the field because they were so good, you know, with their short passing game and with their run game.

And, you know, we'll see how Vandy defends them. But I think when you can run the ball effectively, then when you play action off of it, those can turn into long touchdowns as opposed to just first downs. And we've seen teams willing to give up the run game and frustrate Tennessee. But Tennessee was really good with the way Florida was defending them. So, you know, give them credit for adjusting. And they were motivated and dominant on the line of scrimmage. You know, just a complete all-around performance.

Ethan Davis in the past game was a really good pass-catching tight end. And you mentioned the defense. We didn't see the bust. They were, you know, they knew when, except for one run, you know, late in the game by D.J. Lagway, they were aware and ready when Lagway was going to tuck it in and run, even QB draws. So, you know, Florida's banged up, but Tennessee was too. And so, no apologies. They put Florida away early and convincingly. So, I don't think a lot of us saw that coming, but it was, and it was impressive, nonetheless.

[1:25:18] B-Man, Vince Roy, 99.1, the sports animal in Knoxville. That was on the road. They come home now with an in-state battle with a team from Nashville and a fellow by the name of Diego. He seems to be the sweetheart out there across the country. Your thoughts about the showdown in the Volunteer State this weekend? Yeah, he's going to be tough to handle because of his running ability. Now, he had that running ability and was having an outstanding year last year, and Tennessee bottled him up. I mean, he did nothing last year in their matchup.

Tennessee dominated that. After Vandy got out to a really fast start, then Tennessee exploded on them. You know, a lot of that was the pass game, too, the explosive pass game. And so, you know, Tennessee's always motivated against Vandy. So, you know, we'll see what Vandy does defensively, how they pick their poison, and then, you know, how good Tennessee is going to be. Tennessee's defense was, you know, much better last year than this year's team. So, have they turned a corner and improved? The tackling has gotten better in the last three games.

It was much better in this game. But, you know, the QB run at times has given Tennessee trouble. Certainly, John McTeer did in the second half of that Oklahoma game. You know, QBs that keep the players alive with their legs at times can give Tennessee problems. So, we'll see how this year's version does against them. He's a big part of what they do, but he's not the only good part about their team. They don't hurt themselves. They play really fundamentally sound, get you in the pass game, better at the line of scrimmage than what you think because maybe they'll have the high first-round draft picks.

It's not going to be, you know, the typical meeting with Vandy, but you have an opportunity to ruin things for them. And so, I think there's plenty of motivation from Tennessee's standpoint. I think Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee participating in the Players' Era Festival, a big NIL tournament in Las Vegas. And the last time I saw it in halftime, Tennessee pulled out a can of whoop. You know what? They are beating Rutgers 56-30. Can you confirm that rumor? Yeah. I mean, Rutgers is the best team Tennessee's played this year.

So, that will be a statement. And guess what? If they finish off that game, they'll have a much bigger jump even to face the next best team that they would have faced. And that's a team that Auburn has already seen and lost to, and that's Houston. They eliminated Tennessee in the Elite Eight last year with yours truly in attendance for that one. So, you know, we'll see if Tennessee's 100%. Probably not. The one of their bigs, J.P. Estrella, has got an outstanding season. He had a bone bruise a couple of games ago.

He's been out. Bishop Boswell, a starting guard. He played a really good defender. He's been out the last couple of games as well. So, they're doing that today, not 100%. And they may not be 100% for Houston, but still, this is a pretty deep team, a very different team than a year ago. It will be interesting to see how they match up, especially from a physicality standpoint tomorrow. And then who knows who plays who after the first two games. They don't predetermine that in that tournament. Yeah, that has turned into, in the last two years, a mini NCAA tournament to basically kick off the season.

Very impressive lineup. Alabama playing tonight at 8.30, 7.30 pregame. You can hear that on 93.9 score. I'm going to also make a prediction, V. Alabama tips off Tuesday night at 11 o'clock. Welcome back in. It is an absolute pleasure. Press open the door and say hello to William Redfish Barger, former University of Alabama offensive lineman, now co-host of Bounds Radio. William, welcome in. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. How are you? Doing good, guys. Hope y'all are having a good day. Hey, bud. Man, we're doing all right. William, a lot of people in this state grew up talking about the Iron Bowl. Very few kids ever get to play in the Iron Bowl. You're one of those kids.

Talk to us about playing number one in the Iron Bowl and playing the Iron Bowl at Auburn. Well, you know, I'm so old and then, you know, back when I was playing, you know, it was basically played at Legion Field every year. That's right. And, you know, it was, you know, my redshirt freshman year, I actually started in that game. And, you know, that was the first year we had beaten Auburn in three or four seasons. So it was, you know, kind of changing the narrative and, you know, changing the momentum that Pat Dye had built up kind of rather quickly, you know, since he took over the Auburn program.

But, you know, it's a lot different now than it's, you know, a home-and-home type deal between, you know, Bryant Deney and Jordan Harris. So, you know, I don't necessarily think that it was a true, you know, evenly, you know, divided or how the tickets were distributed back then either. It always seemed to be, you know, kind of a pro-Alabama atmosphere at Legion Field. But, you know, I don't really blame, you know, as it turns out, you know, I think it's turned out better for both schools to have it on campus.

I know one year when we were walking out of there, a chunk of concrete the size of a basketball splatted on the ground next to us from the upper deck. So, it was getting close to time to move out of the old gray lady in the early 90s. Wear your helmet. Yeah, yeah. Obviously, coming into this game, we want to talk about it. But first things first, did you ever think you'd look, I was looking at the stats. I'm not much of a stat in there because it's all relative to me.

But the fact that Alabama's offense scored 14 points each quarter, all four adding up to you got at 56, that's impressive. But how in the world, even against air, do you hold a team to 34 total yards for four quarters, Redfish? Well, I mean, look, we got to put the Astrid by it. I'm not so sure if Thompson High School couldn't have put up more than five. That was pretty rough competition. And I don't mean that as a compliment. But still, you know, I think you have to, you know, tip your hat to Kane Womack and those coaches on defense for, you know, the way they've been playing at such a high level.

And, you know, I think for Alabama to win this big matchup Saturday evening, they're going to continue to have to do that. And I feel pretty confident that they're going to keep their end of the bargain. Well, I was going to mention that the Alabama now leading the SEC in total defense, 270 yards. They're actually ninth nationally. And something else that's caught my attention are the penalties. The last three games, Alabama's had less than 30 yards every game. And for, I know, early in the season and even during some of Coach Saban's 2021-22, they were about 108th.

And you go back to Florida State and Tallahassee when a lot, some fans and media thought they were going to give up 500 yards a game. No question, this defense has improved over the course of the year. Yeah, it has. And I think you could probably, you know, get a highlighter. And I don't know if that was 21 or 22 when we played up at Neyland Stadium. Yes. You know, Bryce Young game there. And, you know, I mean, it was like every other. 17 periods. Yeah, Alabama had an offensive lineman with an illegal procedure penalty.

[1:40:54] But, you know, I mean, I think this team has done a really good job of, you know, eliminating the stupid penalties. And, you know, the defense has done a really good job of getting takeaways. You know, now we've just got to get the offense not to give the other team giveaways. Yeah. And I think, you know, if they can, you know, do that Saturday night, it certainly helps their chances of winning. Because, you know, when you look at this game and don't consider, you know, the current circumstances and the way the Alabama team, at least on offense, has looked over the last 30 days, you would expect Alabama to, you know, kind of win this game handily.

But, you know, when you start factoring in the off-the-field distractions of having the defensive coordinator and the wide receivers coach as finalists for head coaching jobs at different schools, and the quarterback seems to be seeing ghosts. You know, it leaves, you know, a lot of question marks and some uncertainty in how this thing's going to play out Saturday night, especially when you look at what the stakes are. You bring up a point that needs to probably be kind of explained here. You mentioned some distractions as far as coaching.

One thing about it, if you have good coaches, you know they're going to be shopped heavily in the end as far as going forward. This is a business. If you're bad coaches and you're stuck with them, you mentioned Womack. It looks like he's in the mention there as the head coach of vacancy there at Arkansas. And then Ryan Grubb has been mentioned in California. As a player, how big of a distraction is that from a player's standpoint? Well, actually, I didn't even know about Grubb. I was referring to Jamarcus Shepard being in the midst of the head coach at Oregon State.

You know, it's hard for me to relate, you know, because the only way we got news when I was playing was from picking up a copy of one of three local newspapers. And, you know, maybe somebody had been dumb enough to turn on the Feinbaum show, you know, back in the day. But, you know, it's kind of like, you know, my freshman year when Bill Curry left. I mean, we went in for a garden variety team meeting after the loss to Miami in the Sugar Bowl and, you know, found out that he was leaving to go to Kentucky.

Nobody even knew anything about it. So, you know, these guys, everything that they get is instant. And, you know, they certainly can keep up with things if that's what they choose to do. You know, I would think that it would be beneficial for any player, especially ones that might be going through some struggles with their own on-the-field performance, would probably want to stay off of social media and the Internet these days. But that's not my decision to make. Let me ask you about that. Your thoughts as far as Ty, you've got the expert position here at the table.

One thing about it, opposing coordinators now know that he's a lot of pressure on him because until that running game gets up to snuff, it's all on his shoulders, that. And then the other one, obviously, Saturday is something that no team wants to see, and that's booing a player, especially in a 56-0 win. Your thought is just about the kicking game. Be that as it may, whether you're for it or against it, I think a lot of folks say it wasn't that he missed the field goal.

It was going back to how he threw his teammate under the bus in the previous game. But your thoughts about the kicking game, and you've been there, done that. How do you analyze what's going on with Ty? Well, you know, I'll say this. I don't necessarily have a problem with the booing. You know, these kids are being compensated. You know, they wanted the money, and I'm not saying they don't deserve the money, but with the money comes other things, and I don't necessarily think it's inappropriate for that to happen, you know, especially considering that the boos were coming from his contemporaries in the student section.

You know, as far as Ty goes, you know, I think it's something that the more, you know, chinks in his armor that he shows. You know, a month ago, it was basically he was playing at a high level. He wasn't turning the ball over very often. And, you know, it was basically just the fact that, you know, the only thing, at least from a passing standpoint, is, you know, he was struggling to, you know, have the right rhythm and timing on the deep balls. Well, then, all of a sudden, the running game, or the lack thereof, became a focus.

So now you're looking at, you know, an opposing defensive coordinator. Well, you know, s***, these guys can't run. They can't complete really explosive balls deep down the field. Let's stack the 15 to 25-yard area where they are pretty successful and roll the dice from that standpoint. But, you know, I think the comparison is really a pretty good one between the place kicker and Ty at this point. I think it's mental for both of them. You know, you've seen both of them, you know, execute the physical aspects of their jobs in the past.

[1:46:08] So, you know, and I think that was one of the reasons why Ryan Grubb was on the sideline Saturday, to see if he could get a different perspective of things. And, you know, you saw Lane Kiffin do that, although he was on the sideline all the time. But you would see Lane call a play, and then he'd jog, you know, 10 or 15 yards behind the offense so he could get the quarterback view of how things were developing. So, you know, it's a little bit unrealistic, I think, to think that all of them are just going to up and be fixed come Saturday night.

But certainly, I think, as a fan, you have to hope that certainly the turnovers and, you know, not seeing things a certain way can get better by then. William, that's what I was going to ask you. Obviously, the Auburn offense is performing at a much higher level. Now that Auburn asked Hugh Freeze to depart the program, they've got two talented guys at quarterback. We'll see if both of them will be there next year. Fundamental football, sound in the kicking game, no turnovers. What are your keys for Alabama to beat Auburn Saturday night?

Well, I think, first of all, you know, none of Auburn's quarterbacks have shown the ability to really have a, you know, a real consistent down-the-field passing game. So, you know, if I'm Kane Womack, I'm looking at, you know, I would maybe spend a lot of time watching the Kentucky film and watch what Brad White did to the Auburn offense in that loss to Kentucky. And he attacked some weak spots on their offensive line, you know, their tackles and their, you know, 17-year-old center. Got a heavy dose of some pressure and some stunts and stuff like that.

But, you know, I would basically say, look, if you can beat me passing, then you're going to, you know, have a chance to win the football game. But you're not going to just QB run me to death. You know, you have to be disciplined with your edge rushers. You know, this would certainly be a game where you would want to see a little bit of the old Saban mush rush versus just pin your ears back and go get them. And, you know, your linebackers have to have good eye discipline in that scenario.

So, you know, if it were me, I would basically say, look, we're stopping you from running. You know, maybe Cam Coleman wins more than he loses against Dijon Lee and some of those guys in the secondary. But you're not going to nickel and dime me and you're not going to quarterback draw me, you know, to death like you've seen them do some of the teams that they've had success running, you know, the ball offensively with. William, what would you, in your opinion, if you were calling the plays as far as the running back spot, just from afar, it just seems like that A.K. Deer has more of the it.

He has the vision. He can see holes that the other guys may not be seeing. They all got talent. But at the end of the day, you've got to have the instincts to hit the hole at the right time. What would you do to address Alabama's running back situation? I don't think it's just A.K. Deer and, you know, I think Saturday kind of brought this back to the forefront. You know, up until the Missouri game, you know, Kevin Riley was, I think, a pretty, you know, pretty unique weapon as a running back, especially in the passing game.

And he just disappeared after that. Yeah. And, you know, there hasn't really been an explanation for it. I don't know if anybody's asked the question in the media, but, yeah, it seems to me like, you know, I would probably want to have Daniel Hill as the bread and butter running back and Deer and Kevin Riley, you know, seem to be the guys that have the most sudden about them. And, you know, the kind of the party line had been up until recently that the reason that Jan Miller was still, you know, getting most of the touches was his, you know, ability and blitz pickup and pass protection.

And, you know, even that's gone south here, you know, in the month of November. So, you know, I'm a big proponent in, you know, if something's not working, if you've got somebody else over there standing next to you that might can change the narrative. By all means, try and change it. William, tied in, I've heard a lot of scuttle, but certainly in Tuscaloosa Saturday about Josh Cuevas, the foot injury and the extent of how severe it is. But they played three or four tight ends, even Brody Dalton showing some potential, Marshall Pritchett, Caleb Edwards.

William, if Cuevas can't go, what do you do at tight end? Well, I don't think he's going to go. And I think it's a huge loss. Not just from a pass receiving standpoint, but he's just a pure football player and provides, you know, I don't know what kind of guy he is in the huddle, but just certainly from afar, he seems like a guy that's a leader by example and just a, you know, tough blue-collar kid. All the ones that he brought with him from Washington seem to be.

[1:51:28] And so that's where you're going to miss him the most. I mean, I think that, you know, Edwards and Sutter both can factor in in the passing game. In fact, I like both of them. You know, I think Edwards kind of has to still continue to adjust to, you know, what it feels like getting hit by an SEC linebacker or safety after he makes a catch. But, you know, I think they both have the ability to get open and factor into this passing game. But, you know, make no mistake about it, Alabama going into this game without the services of Josh Quavers is a massive, massive loss.

I agree with you entirely. Have you made a prediction for the game yet? Yeah, I made it yesterday. I went with 24-17 and, h***, the more questions that get asked of me and the longer I think about it, the more I wish I had. You know, who knows? You know, I mean, at this point, who knows? I don't understand. Turnover is a key word. I hope I'm in a good mood when y'all call next Monday, but I will be. Hey, you're bigger than we are. If you're in a bad mood, we won't be calling you.

Yeah, I may just not respond to Brett when he says. That's right. We're too old to be hit by you, William. Listen, man, enjoy the game. Thank you so much. And, again, I echo the sentiments. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Yeah, you too, guys. Y'all have a good holiday, and we'll talk to you next week. Thank you, William. We hope. The one and the only, William Redfish Barger.
