Highlights
- Adam Spencer highlights Alabama's loss to Georgia and Auburn's upset win over Georgia, noting Georgia's poor performance due to turnovers and penalties.
- Steve Sarkisian is criticized for stale offensive play-calling, with the argument that Arch Manning isn't the main issue and that Sarkisian needs to take responsibility for the team's underperformance.
- Matt St. Charles from *The Times Daily* discusses UNA Lions' game against Abilene Christian, noting key plays like Conigel Thomas's final mistake that sealed the loss.
- Max Howell criticizes Alabama's reliance on passing in the second half against Tennessee, suggesting some teams are adopting an NFL-style approach that others are not adapting to.
- The host discusses Alabama's financial challenges, including the cost of firing a coach and funding NIL payments, while referencing a potential $500,000 payment from Tennessee for storming the field.
- Kalen DeBoer talks about Alabama's struggles against Tennessee, mentioning difficulty sustaining drives, penalties, and turnovers, while praising the defense for holding Tennessee to field goals.
- Charlie Trotman discusses Auburn's physicality and effective running game, highlighting how they capitalized on turnovers by quarterback Gunnar Stockton.
- William Redfish Barger criticizes Alabama's coaching decisions and offensive play-calling, calling the fourth-and-one counter play poorly executed and expressing frustration with repeated excuses from the coaching staff.

[0:00] Now, get ready to roll Shoals, Decatur, Athens and all of Northwest Alabama and Southern Tennessee. It's time for the Valley's exclusive FM Sports Voice. The Boomo Bugg Show. Your exclusive inside track to the tie, Tigers, Tennessee and the rest of the SEC. Now, your host, Harold Bugg on 93.9 The Score. You've got to be in your A game. And again, we fell short this last weekend. You just do your due diligence and reset every week and go back to work. Don't let the highs be too high.
Don't let the lows be too low. And, you know, I've told the team, you can't let Georgia beat us twice. You can't be feeling sorry for yourself or anything like that. Tomorrow when we hit the football field, we learn from this weekend and we go bring the same energy we had last Tuesday, the Tuesday before that. And the excitement and the understanding that we get to go do this. Like, this is what you wanted. This is what you came here for. Let's make the most and take advantage of the opportunity to go out there and play in an awesome environment that's going to be there on Saturday.
And now we just got to go prepare for it. And welcome in to the Boomo Bugg Show. Brett Beaird and Harold Bugg will be joining us in just a few minutes. Those were the words of Kaelin DeBoer last week. And when he said, don't lose to Georgia twice, that's exactly what happened to Alabama in Knoxville. An incredible five of the top seven teams in the Associated Press will lose. Alex Golich gives a signature win over Georgia. And UNA loses a heartbreaker at the end on a walk-off field goal.
But Adam is here right now to recap an incredible weekend in the SEC. Adam Spencer, newsletter editor, columnist, and podcast and host of Saturday Down South. Saturday tradition is sports betting dime. Adam, welcome to the show, bud. How are you doing today? I'm doing great. How are you? We're doing fine. I was just a little bit late to the show here. I'm just admiring the glass house that Kaelin DeBoer now lives in in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Adam, before we get into the particulars, for the folks who are coming late to the party and saying, is it safe to say this ain't your daddy's or granddaddy's college football world?
Only one word to describe. I can't remember a weekend of chaos like this in this landscape. Just one word, wow, for the folks who wanted that nine-game schedule and get rid of the patsies, you got what you wish for. Welcome in. How are you doing, my friend? I'm doing great. A little less good than I have been the past couple of weeks. Yeah, sorry. Join the party, right? Yeah. It's amazing. Obviously, you're a Missouri fan, Alabama fans, Texas fans. You can just keep on piling on to this.
Your thoughts, it is a brand new world, is it not? Because on any given weekend, what we saw over the weekend can and does happen. It's a perfect storm situation going to Auburn. They had a week off. Alabama and Georgia put a lot of eggs in each other's baskets. Although, I will say this about Alabama. Don't blame that. You blew it. You stunk. There's no other way of putting it, but where do you start breaking down the weekend? Yeah, I mean, I think it starts with the hot seat talk.
Shane Beamer was sitting on the sidelines this week just watching some of his colleagues heat up underneath them there. I think Kalen DeBoer, it's time to have a real conversation. Even though Tennessee is a really good team, that is a really, really good Tennessee team, but this, in year three, this is a loss that you've got to avoid if you're Kalen DeBoer. This is flashbacks to his first year when he lost in Knoxville. And, you know, this is just supposed to be a team that is past that.
You know, they looked like the clear second-best team in the league last week against Georgia, and yet here they are, you know, then they just completely blow it this week. It's like, you know, again, it's credit to Georgia. Jim Knowles' defense just absolutely dominated that game. Deshaun Bishop is amazing. You know, everybody knows that the ball is going to him, and he still runs for $1.50. And so, you know, I just think that if Tennessee had even a league-average quarterback, like, this would be a no-doubt playoff team at this point.
And, you know, maybe Georgia McIntyre can develop into that. We'll see, but that's going to be something I'm going to be keeping an eye on as we move forward here. Yeah, and let's talk a little bit more while we're on that topic. You know our zip code. I mean, Tennessee's defenders were pointing out pre-snap what Alabama's going to do. In all defense, I know the defense is getting a lot of a flat for Alabama, but the good side is that offense wore them out. They held them to four field goals in the first half.
By the time they got to the second half, they were worn out. Now, I'm not defending them. I'm just saying those are facts. But to me, you go back to Grubb. If somebody on the other team is pointing out pre-snap, hey, here's what the film shows us, and boom, they did. How many adjustments did Grubb make over the course of that game? And if you're to bore, if we could put a microphone in the room with his respective coordinators, what went on this weekend, is he going to get the memo that you may be buds with these guys, but if you're going to stay in Tuscaloosa and keep the Wolves out of that glass house, you've got to make some changes somehow, some way.
[5:28] Yeah, I mean, I think it's fair to say that DeBoer's on the hot seat now. You know, if they missed the playoff this year and now their margin is razor thin. Like, you know, they got in last year with three losses. That was because the third loss came in the SEC championship game, and they still barely made it in. So, you know, I think that if they, you know, their margin for error is gone and they still have a trip to Baton Rouge, they still have some other tough games on the schedule.
And Auburn. And Auburn, yeah. It's a house of horror sometimes. I mean, just, yeah. So, you know, I just think that it's, we've seen this a lot this year, you know. In week one, week two, you know, I remember a Utah guy was calling out Arkansas. Like, we knew their play calls and stuff. And it's just, like, that should be, like, you just can't do that. You know, at this level, with the amount of money that these coordinators are making, like, you just can't be that predictable.
Like, yeah, do you think, like, if you just run the same offense at the same call all year, like, by the end of, by the midway point of the year, if not sooner, like, they're going to know your offense. They're going to know your cadences. They're going to know your play calls. Like, you've got to keep switching up. You've got to keep evolving. And if Ryan Grubb can't do that, then, you know, it's not just him that's going to be out of a job at the end of the year.
Adam, Alex Gullich has a signature win over Georgia. I saw this coming a little bit in the Alabama game when Georgia fumbled four times, but they recovered off all four. Gunnar Stockton, who had an incredible day, but threw one interception, could have thrown three. They had seven penalties for 57 yards. Georgia jumps out 14 to nothing. Everybody's thinking, well, this is just going to be an easy win for Georgia. But Auburn scores 24 unanswered points, and Gunnar Stockton has three turnovers. There were three unsportsmanlike penalties against Georgia. I give Auburn all the credit in the world for making a statement.
Byron Brown showed everybody why he was a good choice by Alex Gullich to come in at quarterback. Big win for Auburn as they upset the number one team in the country, 27-24. Yeah, I mean, you know, you said it there, the fumbles. You know, they recovered all four last week, and I think that the football guys were like, well, you know, we're not going to give you that same luck two weeks in a row. You know, if you're going to tempt us, then now you're going to lose two of three fumbles.
So, yeah, it was a sloppy game from Georgia. You know, they, you know, they, like you said, Stockton could have had three picks instead of the one. But the penalties, the personal fouls, like, that's just unacceptable. That's sloppy. You know, I would not want to be a Georgia football player. They're heading into a bye week, and I don't think that they're going to get to relax any. You know, Kirby Smart is probably screaming at them as we speak. So, you know, they, like, they're going to go through the ringer this next couple weeks as they prepare for Georgia, and I think they'll get it ironed out.
But, you know, even with all that, like, even with all that regression, the turnover luck going Auburn's way, like, they still barely won that game, and the underlying metrics weren't great. Like, I mean, if you play that game 100 times, I think Georgia wins, like, 97% of the time. But, you know, credit to them. You don't play that game 100 times. You play it once, and they won the one time this year. That's all that matters. So that was a great win for Alex Golesh. Gets the momentum back, probably puts them in a position to at least make a bowl game in year one, which, you know, should be considered the minimum accomplishment at Auburn, but, you know, hasn't been met in recent years.
So he's trending on the right path. That was a great recruiting win, too, that you can point to. And so, you know, that's going to carry a lot of weight for him moving forward. And that was a really cool moment with him on the field after with his son. So, great week for him. Adam Spencer, Saturday down south. When's the last time, back-to-back weeks, the number one team in the country lost, and not only lost, but lost to an unranked team? Go look that up in your Funkin' Wagnall.
Good luck in finding an answer to that. But your thoughts, the only comfort that folks like Alabama fans can find is you could be a Texas fan, you could have that payroll, and you could be riding a two-game losing streak. Your thoughts about the Sark, the Arch, and all those multimillionaires out there? Yeah, I mean, I think that Sark is on an even hotter seat than Kaelin DeBoer at this point. Like, this team is way too good to continue to underperform expectations like this. You know, Sarkisian's offense just isn't drawing up enough answers for Arch Manning.
You know, they're giving the backup some more reps in practice this week, they said today. So, you know, if it's not Arch Manning, then you can't, like, if you're Steve Sarkisian, like, I know it was a big recruiting win to get him, but if he's the problem, then you can't hitch your train to that wagon anymore. You know, you've got to make the change, and you've got to do what's best for the team. And if it's not Arch's fault, I tend to think it's more just stale offensive play calling from Steve Sarkisian.
[10:49] So I think he needs to look in the mirror. Yeah, I think he needs to look in the mirror first before he starts giving the backup, who's a freshman, more reps. I don't think that Arch is the biggest problem with this team. I don't think that Arch has shown that he's an elite quarterback this year, but I just don't think that he's getting great play calling. I mean, you know, so this team's too talented to have lost these two games the way that they have, and, yeah, it's a disaster in Texas right now.
So, yeah, you're right. With Alabama, they could just be like, well, at least Texas is struggling too right now. Adam, it's been an incredible year. When you talk about Kentucky being 6-1 and 4-1, that win over Kentucky for Alabama looks better every week. But, again, Oklahoma played a little bit better, but Kentucky just simply continues to make plays. Yeah, I mean, that was the team that I was most wrong about. They've already doubled up the win totals that I predicted. I predicted them to go 3-9 in the regular season, so I'll eat some crow there.
I mean, and I even was high on Will Stein. I thought it was going to take a year for him to get his system in place. And, you know, credit to him. You know, he's seen some opportunities, you know, going for two in overtime in a couple of these games that has, you know, I think just energized this team. And, you know, just to go on the road into Oklahoma, like, think about how impossible that was just, you know, a decade ago, you know, back in the big 12 days, just how impossible it was to go to Oklahoma and win.
And, yeah, here's Kentucky, a historic doormat, doing just that. So, the vibes are awesome in Lexington right now. And, you know, they still have five regular season games to go, and they've already got bowl eligibility. So, that's the story of the year. And any coach of the year discussion at this point has to start with him. Here's the bottom line. Kentucky and Ole Miss ranked ahead of Alabama before Halloween. What are the odds of that? All right, Adam, for the long-timers of the show, thanks for your loyalty, for your brand-new brand-welcome, Ian.
Adam is a Missouri fan, and I got to bring it up, dog, man. Missouri has all had high expectations against those Rebs, and here we are on the Monday after asking questions. Yeah, this is Eli Drinkwitz's experience. He's terrible on the road against ranked teams, and I just knew they were going to lose from the first possession because Ole Miss was driving down the field, and then they got to like a fourth and three or something and kind of like half-heartedly jogged with their punt team on there.
So, Mizzou hurries its punt return team on, and then Trinidad, Chambliss, and the offense come back onto the field, and Mizzou panics and has to call a timeout. And it's just like, that's just like, it's not even like Pete Golding was really like trying to get Mizzou to burn a timeout there, but that just shows, like, when they go on the road, it's like, do they forget to bring their game plan with them or something? Is it like sitting on his desk back in Columbia? I don't know what goes on on the road, but if they want to become an elite team, like, you've got to beat top teams on the road.
Like, I know that it's tough to win on the road against ranked teams. Like, nobody's got a great record at doing that, but you've got to do that if you're going to be a playoff contender, and we're just a step below that right now still. Adam, I think we're going to continue to see this mid-season. A lot of teams are tired mentally and physically. They've got to play through it, but we saw it the entire Saturday. Once again, the game has changed, which makes for even more excitement for fans.
Always enjoy beginning Monday with you to break down the games. I know you've got your power rankings. Joe Cox has got some great stuff, too. Where can we get online and get all the teams' good stuff, Adam? Yeah, SaturdayDownSouth.com. My power rankings were quite different this week. A lot of reshuffling, and we've got a newsletter coming out tomorrow, and, yeah, Joe Cox has got his stuff coming later this week. It's always popular, so check it out at SaturdayDownSouth.com. Adam, look, the sun came up all over the country for all the folks who came up on the short end this weekend.
Hope the week gets better for you. Thanks so much for your time today, buddy. Yeah, thanks for having me, guys. Thank you, bud. Adam Spencer, Saturday Down South. Quote from Kalen DeBoer about Ryan Grubb. Quote, he's a great play caller. It comes down to execution. Bebe, your thoughts? Well, we'll discuss this throughout the show, but I don't know too many Alabama fans who would agree with that statement. Red Fish and others are going to have some thoughts on that a little bit later on. But first, welcome to Heartbreak Hotel if you're a UNA fan.

As of late morning, it's up in the air whether or not Mike Evans will play for Frisco, but either way, the injuries continue to mount for the Niners, and it's most concerning on defense. So, come back in. Hopefully, you were able to make it out to the brand new Confines with the UNA Lions over the weekend.
[21:31] I know Matt St. Charles had a good seat there. He follows the Lions with the Times daily. Matt, welcome in to the Monday after. How are you? Hopefully, you'll be able to hook up with Matt there shortly. B.B., you look at it. I don't think you could have had much better weather. I don't think you could have had a much better start. If only the ending would have been as good as the beginning, B.B., it would have been a great weekend for the Lionbackers.
Would you agree? Yeah, I think Matt is with us. But you're right, Harold. And one of the things we'll talk to him about is the defense has really been carrying the team the entire season. This time, they gave up 31 points, only created one turnover. But the offense seemed to be in rhythm, in particularly Destin Wade had an impressive day. See if Matt's out now with us. Matt St. Charles again from the Times daily. Matt, are you with us now? There we go. I'm here, guys. There we go, bud.
There we go. We were just chatting there, Matt. Obviously, I don't think you could have scripted a much better beginning. The weather was football-y. You had a good beginning. But between the beginning and the ending, when you walked off the field at the end of the day, UNA fans wanted a little bit more. And you know the team. And Coach German did, too. Where do you start breaking down the game with Albelin Christian? Yeah, I mean, I think Leo Glover said it best in the post-game press conference.
Just some self-inflicted wounds there that really, really cost UNA. And you know, on a day where the offense started to figure things out, you know, scored 28 points, the defense, you know, wasn't bad, but sort of pedestrian after a game that they forced, you know, four interceptions in. Didn't really do much against Albelin Christian. But, you know, little, like, procedural things as far as, you know, having to, you know, Dierman called it icing his own kicker there when Ian Vachon missed the field goal. And, you know, just things like that that kind of got in their way.
And then penalties, obviously, a big part of it. The most notable being, you know, Conigel Thomas is there at the very end that kind of sealed their fate. But just a lot of things that they can correct. But, you know, on the bright side, that's an Abilene team that has won the league two years in a row. And it's mostly the same group. And, you know, UNA belonged on the field with those guys and really had a chance to win it at a few different points.
So a lot of positives to take away. But the negative, obviously, is that an L goes in the loss column. Matt, the offenses you alluded to in your article or articles seem to have a rhythm. Even the offensive line, they're banged up. When you get to midseason, every team's got some injury issues to work through. Colin Wright starting a right tackle. I mentioned Destin Wade does what he does best, run the ball. Rushed 14 times, 76 yards, three touchdowns. Roderick Taylor added 13 rushes, 459 yards, and a touchdown himself.
But at least, again, we've talked about the offense struggling a lot this season. But they seem to be in a lot more rhythm in this game. Yeah, I think the key to unlocking that, like you said, is Destin Wade getting used in the run game. I think Dierman has talked a lot about doing that throughout the season, but hasn't gotten to it out of the jump of most games, I would say. You know, against Eastern Kentucky, he didn't run much in the first half, but they started to use him a lot in the second half.
And that's where the offense got going. But here against Abilene, he ran, I think, five times on the first drive. So definitely something that unlocked the offense. And I don't want to say it's a miracle, but it's certainly impressive given all of the injuries and just ailments that this offensive line had. You know, Jaden Simmons broke his ankle against Eastern Kentucky. Levy Johnson's been sick over there at left tackle. And then they get Isaac Rue in there on Saturday, and he gets nicked up. So Levy Johnson gets back in there.
Just a lot of, you know, things that have really hindered this offensive line. But I think they, you know, they only allowed two sacks. One of those came there before the half when Destin Wade kind of smartly just ate the ball and took that sack instead of trying to throw it and maybe getting stripped. But they did a lot of good things in terms of chipping tight ends and running backs and that kind of thing to give him some time. But definitely an offense that found its rhythm on Saturday.
Matt St. Charles Times daily, no time to lick the wounds. The good news, UNA keeps the home cooking this weekend. The challenging news, Austin Peay comes to town. The governor's 6-2. Two losses, by the way, one of them to SEC for Vanderbilt. This team scores a lot of points. Your thoughts about this weekend's matchup? It's going to be a challenge across the board, but especially for that UNA defense. Yeah, I mean, they lost one game to Vanderbilt and their other game is to Tarleton State, who is now the number one team in the country in those polls.
[26:41] So, you know, Austin Peay really with Chris Parson at quarterback has turned into a juggernaut in FCS this year. And I think their defense may leave some to be desired, especially in the secondary. That's something that I think, you know, Snap Reid and X Johnson will be able to kind of take advantage of given the right play calls and execution. But, you know, it's certainly going to be a challenge for this UNA defense to rein in Austin Peay's offense, for sure. You also do a good job of covering high school, and you covered Central and West Limestone.
We talked to Heath Wood back during the summer, and you could tell there was a burr under his saddle because they missed the playoffs last year for the first time in eight years. I think he's been there 16, 17 years. I've talked about Lucas Price running wild the entire season. Well, here's another good example. He runs for four touchdowns and 255 yards. They ranked up 377 overall, but a big win for Central running that wing tee. Yeah, definitely a spectacular game from Lucas Price. Definitely one that a lot of people thought wasn't going to be as close as it was.
Yeah. West Limestone had a good third quarter there to kind of hang in it, and obviously Central takes the region, but Coach Wood wasn't ready to count his chickens before they hatched, I would say, after the game. I told him Rodgers was down big, and he was like, well, we'll see. Yeah, I know he's very happy to have that group back to his expectation for it after missing the playoffs last year. Even if it was an ugly one, but even if it was an ugly one, they were definitely happy to get it.
Absolutely. We'll go into more detail about a high school tomorrow, and particularly Ben Thomas, but Austin upsets Florence 21-17 to throw the region into a three-way time. Aiden Davis, the running back at Austin, carried the ball 49 times and ran for 251 yards as Austin beat Florence 21-17 in Austin and Russellville. If Austin wins, they will win the region, but Florence is still certainly there along with Russellville, and we'll talk about that more. More great stuff covering UNA and high school. Now, back with Boomo Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Welcome back in. Talk about a gentleman who's been there and done that. Pioneering a thing called Sports Talk in the Southeast back in the day. On the side lies an assistant coach of Florida State and Ole Miss. Max Howell hooking up with us from the state of Mississippi. Max, welcome in. Did anything out of the ordinary catch your eye over the weekend in college football?
How are you? Well, we start. Let's talk about the weather first. I woke up Saturday morning and it was 42 degrees in Mississippi. And the high ended up being about 65. So, a sudden change, but that's okay. It's time to do that. Yeah, I can tell you exactly what I saw this weekend. What did you say, Max? Alabama didn't run the football. You know, they were trying to rely on the pass every snap. Again. And guys, it's just another point that we talked about. There are certain coaches and certain programs in this league now that's going to take it up the NFL approach to the game.
And the other opponents are not doing that. And so, consequently, if you can't control the ball, you've got a quarterback. I wonder, here's the thing I wonder often. Do quarterbacks not have the ability to check off anymore regardless of what comes down from the press box? Good question. I'm just telling you. I've called a media play for the sideline. It's the year that we won a national championship there at Troy. And my quarterback checked off and scored. That's the way I called. Because he saw something in the change in the defense that I couldn't see from the sideline.
[37:21] So, I'm just saying, I don't know what's going on. But some changes are headed that have to be made again. I don't know where they are, what they're going to be. But that was inexcusable to me to see. And then the other side of that is we go to all the Georgia games. What take did Georgia watch? They must have watched one that these kids must have been still in high school or something. And they just took it for granted that all of them was going to walk it in and roll over.
Because they didn't play very well either. So, I think with the point, guys, and I've said it, and I've tried to tell other people just to think about this, that we know we're in a system of change right now. But the mentality of the kids that we have is not on the maturity level that the NFL is. And I'm just telling you guys, when they sit down on Sunday afternoon and watch that tape for their next opponent, and they make up their mind on Sunday afternoon, hey, I can handle that guy, block him.
You know, if I'm an offensive lineman or if I'm a defensive guy, I know how the blocking scheme works. I'll make a sack or two and go along. And they really don't get ready for the ball game. And they make a judgment call based on what they see. And then what they, on Sunday, and by the next Saturday, whatever they see is not what they saw on Sunday. That would be last week. And they get their tail beat. And I heard a written rage from the Texas staff also, you know, about what Florida was doing.
And, well, look, that offensive front didn't drop the ball and didn't throw the interceptions. You know, I got real problems when you've got the court reporting some of the best talent in the country and you don't utilize it. Or if you do, or if you do, if they make mistakes, you try to cover it. You know, I just, I guess I'm not adjusting well to the change. And I'm not the only one, guys. I'm telling you, there's some programs and coaches that are not adjusting too well either right now.
Max, I mentioned this in the first segment, just going back to the Auburn-Georgia game pretty quick. I saw this coming against Alabama. Georgia fumbled four times. They were fortunate that they didn't lose one. Stockton had one interception, should have had another one by QB Reese that was not called, should have thrown three interceptions, had seven penalties for 57 yards. Now, again, Georgia, when they're playing well, is the most complete team. They've got the most talented roster. But, Max, when you make that many mistakes, Stockton had three turnovers.
When you turned the ball, same thing with Alabama. And I agree with everything you said. Max, when you have three or four turnovers, you're not going to win the game. No, that's exactly right. And it's my opinion, guys, that those kids, the kids part, make up their burn on Sunday afternoon when they look at the tape for next week. Remember, these are still, some of these kids are still 18, 19 years old. I know we've got some, you know, that the old men and the 22-plus here, but those have become fewer and fewer.
Once all the rules are settled in, the majority of the kids are still going to be between 18 and 22 years old. But you're going to have to do something about the way you make that adjustment from what you see on this Sunday when you go to practice Monday. I don't know what the coaches are, and I know each group is going to be different to a certain point, but when you've got the key players making mistakes on something, just as you pointed out, that they don't make normally like turn the ball over, that's a psychological thing.
The other thing I really, and I just mentioned a while ago, that I really would like to see change with some of these coaches, it'll allow me, if the quarterbacks are as good as advertised, if we talk about the Georgia quarterback, we'll talk about Alabama's quarterback, give them the ability to change the line of scrimmage. And again, it does not take a mental genius, and I'm willing to say that for sure, because I call for the plays along the way, and I know that if you can have the guy in the box override what you say because they see something different, or the quarterback comes under center, and he sees something different, allow him to do it.
He's on the field. You're sitting on the sideline and seeing a level player play all along. I'm just saying there are ways to correct some of the mistakes we're seeing right now, but guys, the game's moving just as fast as it can right now. We know where it's headed. It's headed to the NFL quicker than anything I've ever seen. That's right. To your point, I think some of these coaches have got a bigger ego than they've got brains sometimes. I saw this is a high school game over the weekend at some place across the country.
A quarterback audibled at the line, and the coach suspended him, and the team was suspended, too, because they supported the quarterback. So I think sometimes these coaches, they're getting paid a lot of money. And back to that, Grubb today said, duh, we're pathetic in the second half of late. If I was a fan, I'd be, you know, P2. Yeah, it's like Sunday, the preacher preaches one thing and then practices another, and it's easier said than done. Everybody says, fire the coach. Well, how many millions of dollars is that going to drain from Alabama's budget?
[42:51] Where are you going to bring, how much are you going to pay for a new staff? Where is that going to leave you as far as paying for the NIL? The only thing they can depend on right now is getting a half million dollars from Tennessee for storming the field. It's a hard thing to sit here and preach it. What do they do to correct it, Max? See, I think that's the major problem. And I think what's happening is the fear of the correction is what, if you put it out, the money situation is going to hold a bunch of them back.
That's right. I mean, you know, you're right. But see, let's talk about it. Let's talk about Mississippi State. They're in the same situation. They don't have the beauty guys. I'm telling you, I've been on campus. I know too many people. Jack and Cheryl and I are good friends, and he and I talked constantly when he was coaching at Mississippi State, and I was on the staff at Ole Miss. And I'm just telling you, their inner workings at these universities. Let's just transition right quickly back to Auburn.
How about the last seven years at Auburn? What's the heck you think is going on over there? There are licks that might, after the wind is coming up, that may just pass this past weekend, maybe that will change the attitude a little bit. Or maybe Gus Malzahn, the newly acquired assistant consultant, can have something to do with the offense. I don't know. I don't know what the answer is. But the fact is that if you're going to win and keep your job any length of time, and how you mentioned it, because of the money, they'll find a way to get the money up some way.
If they have to pay them a dollar down to a dollar a week for the rest of their life, they'll find a way to make a change. Because how many coaches want to stay in a situation where the players are hollering at them and the administration's not dealing with them on an equitable basis? You get the message. When you get up there every morning and hate to go to work, then you better be looking for another job. Max, the only fan base more upset this morning than Alabama is Texas.
They jump out to a 17-3 lead over Florida. And the Gators experienced some growing pains for two weeks. But they kind of grew up in the second half and just whipped Texas at the line of scrimmage. Ball started doing better. Tremel Jones had a tremendous game. Arch did not have a tremendous game. Fumbled again late. Another crucial penalty. They're 103rd in the nation now in offense. And, Max, it was, again, we're hearing, well, the second-string quarterback may get more reps this week. Max, your thoughts on where Texas is right now.
Well, let's look at the big picture first. How many National Championships have won in the last 20 years? One. That's right. See? I'm just saying so. And then, of course, Texas A&E, we won't even talk about them. They go back to 1930 and it does and say one more. So, there's something in the air out there, Texas. I don't know what is. But you're absolutely right. They poured more money into it. The head coach is the actual play caller. When you see him squatting down there, throwing X's and O's on the sideline, he's talking to his coordinator at the press box who actually calls a play with the quarterback.
But I think they have, up until just recently, they've given Arch Bader the ability to make some calls at the line of scrimmage. And I don't know how that maturation point is going across right now. If you recall, the Ohio State win was, what, the last three or four minutes of that fourth quarter. He finally got it all together. At a program like that where they have all the resources, they've got the financial resources, the universities in the state with the most high school products in the country.
And we could just go old and old and old about all the pluses. So, somewhere in that mix-up, there's got to be some leadership. And I'm saying this, you know, when they start going downhill like this, somebody better, you know, have a bed to be taught with a head guy or they better select a selection committee and start looking for another head coach. I got a feeling Bubba Big Bucks out in Texas. Yeah, he's on the phone right now with some of those folks. Max, your thoughts about the balance of the season for Alabama and Auburn?
Now that we know what we know, starting this weekend with A&M for Bama and LSU, who knows about this team for Auburn on the home turf? That's very true. Well, you've got to take them one at a time because, like I was going to say, we're in the process of change right now. Different world. You know, it's a whole different world. Remember that quarterback from Florida that beat Texas is the number two quarterback. That's right. He's not the starter. That's right. Well, he's in Tennessee.
McIntyre's starting to do the best. That's right. If I was coaching that, they have become the starter now. I mean, you know, you put a young guy out there that has no experience in a crowd that big and they come away with a win, make very few mistakes, then you've got to give him a chance again, I think. But so it's hard to answer the question because this change, this flux that the whole game is in right now, I think we're going to keep seeing this kind of thing.
[48:15] I did say at the beginning of the year, I would almost admit we would not have an undefeated team in the SEC this year. And I understand from the administration standpoint with the SEC, they want to go to their ball games because the individual schools that play that great game, that's a bigger paycheck for them. It's a paradigm budget. But, guys, what it does, it minimizes the opportunity to get more players in the playoffs. See? And so, now here we go. You know, if they stay at 12, I mean, we know they aren't going to stay at 12.
I thought they'd just go gradually go to 16 and maybe then 24, but the word looks like they're going straight to 24. Well, that's going to just, you know, that may be the excuse to drop their number of losses to three as opposed to two. But as long as they stay at 12, it's going to be two. Nobody's going to change that. They aren't going to do it. And remember, out of that, you've got two lower-level teams that are going to make it. And they're going to save us three.
So, really, you've got dead teams that you can look at across the country. And I don't believe, you know, I don't believe that SEC is playing at the level to get more than maybe two or maybe three at the most if the leading teams win out the rest of the year. Because when you lose a game like the games that were lost this weekend, when it's pretty evident that you've got the best talent and you're losing that game, the guys that go straight to the coaching staff.
That's right. You can't deny that. You can't excuse it. You've got to find a way to, you know, to overcompensate. And I think what we've got is administrations now, it's become so, I don't want to call it curbelated, but it's changing so fast that the administration can't keep up with it. And they've got more, really, those college presidents and more trustees have got more interest in maintaining what goes on at the college-university level than worry about the football team. Now, they'll worry about the football team when people stop coming.
Now, that's not because it cuts into the cash flow. But other than that, you've got to be competitive and you've got to find a way to win. And that's just, I don't know any way to put it. Max, I agree with you. There's not going to be an undefeated team this year. We're halfway through and there's not one in the SEC. But, by the way, Max, everybody was laughing at Will Stein in July in Tampa when he said, Well, we're going to be better because of me.
Six-and-one and four-and-one is pretty impressive, isn't it? I agree. I don't think there's any doubt it. But people stop to realize that Kentucky's got as much money as the other guys. I mean, have you ever driven up through Lexington and going on up to the horse farms and up there? Oh, yeah. And, of course, those people don't stay up there in the wintertime. They come to Central Florida. They've got farms down in Central Florida just like Kentucky. No birds. That's right. I'm telling you, guys, until you turn the book over and look behind the last cover and find out really what goes on in different places, you'll be surprised what you'll learn.
I'll tell you. That's right. Absolutely. Max, we always enjoy breaking down the games with you. Hope you have a great week. I know you're going to be on the road again. Let's do this again next Monday. I'll be glad to do it, guys. Just give you a call. Thank you so much. And who knows how the world is going to change between now and then. Max, how are you going to go with us? BB, the question is, can Alabama win out and keep the slimmest of margins to make the playoff field?
Well, that's the question. We'll be talking with our guests about it the rest of the week and also William Barger. But, again, that was rather interesting this morning with Ryan Grubb. Yeah, we do our best when we run the ball and do play action passing. Well, why didn't you do that Saturday afternoon? Safe to say he's not the head of the Mensa Society, right? Coming up, you mentioned Redfish. Going to be talking Bama. Vince, we're all talking about a half-million-dollar fine weekend in K-Town and worth it.

Grateful to our staff. I'll just say this, not to make it any more or less than it is. We've worked really, really hard to be able to put ourselves in a position where we can build. And at whatever point, we're able to get it to where we don't come in here as a huge underdog. And where we are given a chance to go win these games from the outside, on the inside. BB, welcome in, folks. Welcome in to the second hour of the Boomo Bugg Show. I'm Harold Bugg. Brett Beaird in the huddle with you this hour as well. BB, your thoughts about the Auburn win.
What it means. Obviously, this was a stunner across the country. Not only winning, but the way they won. And to me, it illustrates again. This is 2026. There ain't no off weeks in college football anymore. Welcome to the NFL. Well, I'll be honest with you, Harold. When I looked at the schedule during the summer again, when they finally defined it or finished it, I thought Alabama would have a problem in Knoxville coming off of a huge emotional game, win or lose, against Georgia. And I thought Georgia would have the same.
Alabama, according to pro football focus, missed 23 tackles. Georgia missed 15 tackles. They had missed six tackles. And once again, when you win a game like this and you're playing the number one team in the country, the number one team in the country has got to help you beat them. And that's what happened. There were three turnovers in this game that provided to be huge. But, Harold, Auburn has figured out who Auburn is. Thank you. Tennessee knows their identity. Auburn now knows their identity. I don't know if Alabama knows their identity yet.
[1:04:12] And that's something they're going to have to figure out. Ryan Grubb says, well, we're best when we run the ball first. And that opens up the passing game. But Auburn knows who their identity is now. With Byron Brown, I think Charlie has joined us. But, no, it was an absolutely incredible win for the Auburn Tigers. So, who was the happiest tiger in all the land, the aforeheard Alex Golesh, the head coach, or former Auburn quarterback Charlie Trauman? Why don't we get that question and others out of the way by saying hello to CT.
Charlie, welcome in. How are you? Hey, Harold. Hey, Brett. Hey, Benny. Appreciate you guys having me. Yeah, it was a huge win. A very unexpecting group of Auburn fans watching, you know, Auburn go down 14 to nothing. I mean, you know, kind of feeling like, uh-oh, here we go. It's going to be a tough, tough day. And this thing may get away from us. Yeah. But, you know, you've got to give Auburn and Coach Golesh and the other coaches a lot of credit because of the resiliency that that team had.
Being able to come back from that deficit and score a couple of touchdowns, kick a field goal before half and go in. I mean, no one at that point, halfway through the first quarter, would have thought that Auburn would be leading at halftime. But, you know, they were able to get a few things going offensively. You know, the first couple of drives, they stalled and had to punt, and Georgia scored each time. And Auburn ended up, you know, finding some third-down conversions. And Byron Brown was really, I thought, excellent in his running ability.
You know, he made Georgia respect the quarterback run. And that gave it, you know, with the play action, you know, he drops back, looks like he's going to throw, and then he runs. You know, it puts a lot of pressure on the defensive backs. And then, you know, he found some open receivers. And then, you know, we had one receiver that made an unbelievable catch to tie the game at 14. And then we got the field goal and went in feeling pretty good at halftime, being over in Athens, playing the number one team in the nation.
You know, Charlie, since you mentioned about the fans, my little fur buddy is not feeling all that well these days. So I had to go to the vet this morning, and he came out. Of course, he's an Auburn grad. He was talking to some folks with their dog, and they were all Auburn fans. And I asked him to watch the game. He said, actually, no, he says, because I already had a conclusion drawn in my mind. I started listening to it, and the more I got to listening to it, now I'm happy.
So I think he illustrated kind of the mindset for a lot of Auburn fans, if they're honest. But your thoughts what this kind of win means for a program. He goes back to Gene Stallings up against the wall back in the day. Alabama caught one against Tennessee when they were like, wow, I think they were number two in the country at the time. They beat Tennessee at Tennessee. What does this do for a program, and as Brent brought out, Auburn already has a pretty good idea halfway through a first-year coach's program.
Your thoughts on what this means going forward starting this weekend against who knows about this LSU team. That's true. You couldn't find a bigger win. I mean, I was trying to think back. You know, when Auburn beat Georgia and Alabama successively in 2017, that was a good Auburn team. Now, this team going into the game against Georgia, people were wondering whether Auburn was even going to make a bowl game. And people, you could still wonder that. But the thing is, is that this game gives Auburn so much confidence, so much energy.
I think, you know, it makes the coaches believe that what they're doing is working, that the program that they're trying to instill at Auburn is on its way, that they've got a good foundation. They're building a foundation, and when you build a foundation, you don't always put – I mean, sometimes you put two building blocks up and one falls down, and then you have to put two more back up. So, it's a process, and I think Coach Golesh, you know, didn't want to make too big a deal out of the win, but he – I don't think you could have – you could have even written up a Hollywood script that would have been better for Auburn than this past Saturday.
Charlie, I think Auburn won this game last week. Auburn had a bye week. They had a chance to get healthy. They looked at a lot of film of Georgia. D.J. Durkin is a – you know, I know that they've gotten off to a little bit of a slow start tackling and defensive fundamentals, but he's one of the best defensive coordinators in the country now. Again, Auburn outrushed Georgia 192-113. I think they figured out – Auburn now knows what their identity is, and that's primarily being physical and running the ball, and I think Auburn got a little bit of schedule luck because I think – when you come off a big emotional game like Alabama and Auburn, you're going to have some guys out beat up, and they're going to be mentally tired, but Auburn took advantage of that.
[1:09:49] But when you outrun rush Georgia 192-113 and get three turnovers, that's quite a day. That is, and Brett, I think you're exactly right. I mean, excuse me, the Alabama-Georgia game, I think it took an awful lot out of both teams. Alabama really had a hangover in Knoxville, and I think Georgia had a hangover at home. And, you know, even though they got out to a big start, I think when it was 14-0, they were just going to feel like they could coast the rest of the way.
And then when Auburn came back and scored a touchdown and got within a score, it became a game. And you're right, Auburn was a little bit more physical. At halftime, you know, when they were interviewing Kirby Smart, he even said Auburn's more physical on the line of scrimmage than we are right now. And that quarterback draw, the quarterback keeper, is really keeping them, you know, honest. And so, yeah, I think, you know, Coach Golesh always talks about who's the most violent team. And he always says if you're more violent than you're the guy right across the line of scrimmage from you, and if you can, you know, stay from six to eight seconds every play and be more violent and be more aggressive, then you're probably going to win the day.
And that's kind of the way they're coaching. And I think they went into that game knowing they had to stop the run. You know, of course, Gunnar Stockton had a good day passing. You know, he threw for well over 250 yards and a couple of touchdowns. He's an outstanding quarterback. But, you know, he had not thrown two interceptions in a game in his career. And he had two interceptions against Auburn and then that last fumble. So, you know, Auburn took advantage of those and was able to, you know, keep Georgia kind of at bay and got a 10-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
And, you know, gosh, guys, I don't think anybody could have prognosticated that, you know, that Auburn would be winning the game in the fourth quarter. We were hoping that we were going to be in the game in the fourth quarter. Charlie, this is a different style. But I said after watching where some of the Auburn-Baylor game last year, Auburn ran for 300 yards, I said to myself, Hugh Freeze, that's your identity. Run the ball the rest of the year. And he wouldn't do it. But Golich is smart enough, Charlie, to where I think they, again, I go back, five weeks really helped teams out.
And I think Auburn took full advantage. They figured out, I think, who can play on the offensive line. The defense needed a week off. Listen, Melendez was just incredible. He was. With that, Charlie. But, listen, we always enjoy breaking down the game with you. Congratulations to you and the Auburn family. That was an incredible win, my friend. Let's do this again next Monday, Charlie, if we can. Sounds great, Brett and Harold. War Eagle, guys. And we are fortunate to have gotten out of Athens with the win.
We know that. But it is hopefully going to be a springboard and maybe give Auburn a chance to be successful as the year winds down. In the meantime, enjoy the ride on cloud nine this week. Charlie Trotman, former Auburn quarterback. Coming up, celebration time. They basically rolled Toomer's Corner at Auburn and Tennessee rolled the Crimson Tide in Knoxville. The V-Man details next. From the University of Alabama, this is Crimson Tide Today. It's a daily update on Bama sports and it's brought to you by APS, Alabama Professional Services. Hello again, everybody. I'm Roger Hubert. Here are thoughts from Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer following Alabama's game on Saturday against Tennessee. Struggled to sustain anything, keeping drives, you know, and continuity there and a penalty or, you know, came up short on a couple fourth downs and you're going to have to find a way to get some explosives against a front like that.
And, you know, we struggled to do that. So, you know, turnovers early gave them some field position. They got the points. Our defense did a nice job of holding them to field goals. They did score every time they got in the red zone. But, you know, I thought those were some key stops to give us a chance. And so, you know, struggle coming out of the locker room each half to put some drives together. You know, and just, again, you know, fourth and one a couple times and coming up short.

The score. Now, back with Boomo Bugg on 93.9 The Score. That was Daryl on Paul's show. Wonder what Daryl is going to be calling Paul about today. Paul, by the way, will follow the Boomo Bugg show later on here on 93.9 The Score. What's Daryl going to say today, B.B.? I think a little different tone today for Daryl. It's the same tone when Alabama goes to Knoxville under Coach DeBoer. I think Vince Ferraro would agree with that. He follows the victors in East Tennessee this weekend. The Tennessee Vols there on 99.1, the sports animal in Knoxville.
Vince Ferraro, welcome in. Did any Tennessee fans make it to work this weekend or they still hung over and having breakfast with Pepto-Bismol? How are you? Well, I'm great. Great to be on with you guys. I can't confirm like everyone's work status, but there's a chance that they, I know what they smell like if they were in the stadium on Saturday. V-Man, obviously, wow, we know what's being said on this side of the state line and it's family radio, so we'll be careful with that. What are they saying on your side of the state line about this game?
[1:20:49] Yeah, obviously, tremendous excitement and pride for, you know, a game that's very important to a lot of fans. You know, to the older demographic, we've talked about this before, it's the most important and meaningful rivalry game for the younger fans, Florida. And now they don't play Florida every year, so, you know, maybe that will bring more towards Alabama if they weren't already. But, you know, the fact that they, you know, is much, you know, really bad history against Alabama they had basically since Saban got there and, you know, how much that was dominated until 2022's victory.
And now, you know, you have three straight wins at home against Alabama, considering all the struggles, and then to win the game by the most points since 1998 against Alabama. Honestly, I think as dominant as Tennessee was at the line of scrimmage in that game, the score probably wasn't even indicative of how one-sided it was. And, obviously, you know, Cat only getting field goals early was a part of that. But, look, I give Josh Hypo credit for taking the points. There's times where he's chasing points. He is going for it in plus territory.
This game did not call for that. And he read the room. He doesn't always make those calls that I agree with, but I agreed with him in not forcing things. They obviously, you know, want to get touchdowns, but, you know, they weren't executing into play, some drops and things like that. And so, take the points. You can't afford. I know kick and field goals all the time has to come back and bite you. Hypo said it in the post game when I asked him about it.
But he, you know, you also can get beat by not getting anything at all. And so, that didn't happen to them. So, I give him credit for not only that, taking those points, but also playing to his team, to his quarterback play. They advanced a little bit the passing game and some of the wrinkles that they did to move the chains. They weren't the typical explosive hypo offense that he has a, you know, a reputation for. I also, because of that, I don't think Alabama's game plan, and I'm sure people have been talking about it there.
I didn't understand why they were so adamant to not give up the deep shot and play soft coverage, and Tennessee smartly took it. Why? What have they shown on tape that they're going to beat you over the top? Maybe some past years or his reputation, and then no adjustment during the game either. So, I, you know, but Tennessee, Tennessee didn't force things. They took it, and George McIntyre got the ball out of his hands. Just really impressed by them doing what was necessary to win a game and do it in dominant fashion.
Last thing on this, the defense, guys, Alabama going into that final drive in the fourth quarter, they had 139 yards in total offense. So, they had 62 on that drive when Tennessee's playing a little pre-bend defense until Knowles was like, all right, enough of this. And they started eating up, you know, Keelan Russell. But he had 89 yards passing going into that drive as well. I mean, just absolutely dominant across the board defensively. And then the ground game, obviously, was massive to get them in the finish line. I thought Tennessee had a simple game plan.
I give Clint Lamb credit for laying this out. You alluded to some of it. Offensively, ran the ball with Deshaun Bishop. Quick easy throws for the quarterback because Alabama was soft coverage and were playing off. And then defensively, and Jim Knowles put on a master class. He's earned every penny that they paid him. Put Alabama in unfavorable down in distance, third and eight. Yet after Russell, which they did with four sanks because Alabama, for some reason, would not run the ball enough. Very simple game plan, but executed to perfection.
Yeah, it was spectacular. And what Jim Knowles has done, I told you guys on my show, this would be a much improved defense. And to me, it was the trust in Jim Knowles. Yes, there was a whole reputation that he needed two years to really make an impact, but he has much more to work with. He had coaches all over the defense that he's worked with. He had players from every level that are starters on this defense, support staff. Oh, by the way, they hired another massive hire that's earned every penny.
[1:26:03] He's the strength and conditioning coach for the national champions at Indiana, and Derek Owings. And that is paying off on defense so much. Plus the other transfers they brought in, like T.J. Metcalf and Quay Moss, they've all panned out. And they're veteran guys that were able to learn the system and put in the work. And even Amari Campbell said the difference between Jim Knowles' defense last year at Penn State and here is the buy-in. Which tells me he was a mess there, and they weren't all brought in.
And when you buy in to him, this is what can happen to you. And they lead the nation in sacks and up there in TFLs and so many other defensive categories. Just a clinic. They work as all 11. They show young quarterbacks, older quarterbacks. They show them one look pre-snap and something different post. And they'll send blitzes at the right time, seemingly. Number two, Xavier Gilliam is, as Cole Kubik mentioned, probably the best defensive player in the country. They disrupt everything. And then they all work connected together.
So game plan, players, not super deep, but man, this group is at as high a level as you can get right now. I agree with you entirely about hiring Derrick Owens after the national championship game, getting him from Indiana. Tennessee just looks like a bigger team. But they need to be as far as – but they need to be careful. I know you're going to talk about this all week long. Tennessee coming off a big emotional win over Alabama. And then you're traveling to South Carolina on the road with a South Carolina team that's had a bye week.
A lot of people are going to be looking at that as a trendy upset pick. We'll see more or less how that goes. Hey, man, where can we get online and get all your postgame for Tennessee and Alabama? Yeah, I was talking about South Carolina in his postgame. They had the extra week and they had to catch up. And he was obviously talking about it today. And there's so many examples of teams having letdowns after emotional wins. And, oh, by the way, South Carolina ruined Tennessee's season and hope for a playoff in 2022.
And there's a track record there of not playing well there, just like there was for Arkansas when people said, oh, there's no way they're going to blow them out. Well, there's a track record there. So Tennessee's got to be careful. But you can follow me on all the socials, Vince Sports, V-I-N-C-E Sports. And then if you go to the Sports Animal YouTube channels, look for 99.1, the Sports Animal. You'll find Josh Ward and I with an extended wrap-up of what we saw in the game. And then, you know, on our website, 99.1, the Sports Animal.com podcast of our shows.
And we're breaking it down, too. What's the old game show thing? The consolation prize. Alabama does come away with a half million dollars for our Tennessee storm in the field. So is that the consolation prize? Yeah. Hey, in the NIL world, you'll take all of it, right? It's all part of the strategy. V-Man, have a good week, okay? All right, you guys are the best. I always enjoy it. Thank you. Thank you, buddy. Hey, man, 99.1, the Sports Animal. Coming up, if you think you're upset as a fan, I would imagine the former players have a thing or two or more.

It is obviously a huge, huge honor for us to say hello to William Redfish Barger, former University of Alabama offensive lineman, close to BAMS Radio. William, welcome in. We've heard from the fans. The question is, what are former Alabama players saying? William, William, William, where do you start breaking this one down the Monday after? Well, I mean, before I get going, do y'all have a waiver from the FCC so I don't get y'all taking care of their way? Let me check on that. Let me check on that, William.
Until we get a final word, let's try to keep it on Thursday all the way home, okay? I'll try and give you the dizzle version. That's it. That's okay. All right. But, you know, it's probably one of the worst examples of coaching malfeasance I think I've ever seen. I agree. I agree. From the beginning. You know, I came back from grabbing a Diet Coke out of the fridge at the start of the fourth quarter, and when I looked at the TV screen and, you know, saw that Kane Womack had two defensive linemen and two 230-pound outside linebackers lined up across the defensive line to stop the run.
[1:36:42] You knew they were going to be running the ball. Yeah. And then the corners were still 10 yards off the ball. I just turned it off. Yeah. You know, I've got better things to do with my time. Yeah. I switched it over and watched a good ball game. I watched the rest of the Auburn-Georgia game. But, I mean, I wish I could offer some kind of, you know, educated, informed opinion on what we all saw Saturday. But, I mean, it's just, you know, from the head coach to both coordinators, you know, the offensive coordinator did nothing to get his, you know, first-year quarterback comfortable.
You know, the most hostile environment to play in in college football, you know, especially with being down, you know, the starting center and the best wide receiver. You know, they're just, you know, watching them expect that offensive line to hold up for five and six seconds against a really good pass rushing defensive line, you know, for, you know, pass patterns that take forever and a day to, you know, develop and come open if they ever do come open. And, you know, you know, not much of an effort to, you know, run quick hitting, running plays up the middle.
And probably the, you know, the worst thing that I saw was the fourth and one attempt with a counter play that, h***, I probably could have run that play down at 55 years old. It takes forever so long to get somebody going with that. You know, I just, you know, I wish you could, you know, I wish I could find something positive to say. But I'm fresh out of positivity. I've been supportive. I've been loyal. But I won't watch the Texas A&M game this weekend. You know, if I see that they won and performed well, maybe they can win my fandom back over the off week and I'll watch the LSU game.
But that's even up at the air at this point. Here's the deal, William. When you get out, let's face it, it's safe to say outplayed, outcoached. That's the outcome you can get. I think here's what's frustrating. It's year three. And we're hearing the same platitudes. Well, we came out flat. Well, we know that, Coach. This is a good man. I think Kenneth DeBoer is a good man. But nobody ever accused Bear Bryant and Nick Saban being gentle guys. They did their job. They won at the highest level.
It's one thing to be good. No question about that. But to hear the same platitudes in year three, the question is we know what screwed up. I mean, I got a little blind dog and she saw what was going on. What are you going to do to fix it is a problem because it's not the first time they've come out on the Monday afternoon and said, we screwed up. If I was a fan, I'd be mad too. Okay. But what are you going to do to fix it?
You know, I mean, there's some pretty simple solutions to fix it. I mean, you know, when you're the defensive coordinator and you've recognized that, you know, a team has basically told their quarterback they're not going to ask him to do anything to put the game in jeopardy, which equates to throwing the ball deep down the field. Yep. Right. And all they're going to do is run the football. And when they have to pass it, they're going to throw it, you know, five yards down the field and, you know, roll the dice on what the wide receiver can pick up after the catch.
And when you're giving them 10 yards, you know, on a third and six, I mean, h***, I could, I could complete that, you know, it's just, and again, it's same thing on the other side of the ball. You know, I mean, I have no problem in that kind of atmosphere if there's some illegal procedure penalties, because it is a hard place to hold the mud, you know, when you're in your stance, getting ready for that ball to be snapped and, you know, communication is difficult, but, you know, just, just to see the, the poor game planning, um, I, you know, I don't even put it on the players at this point.
I mean, you're putting them in impossible situations to be successful and, and, you know, part of the, you know, part of the, you know, the first bullet point on a coach's responsibility, whether it's a position coach or coordinator or head coach, man, you got to be able to put your players in a position to be successful or have a chance to be. Yeah. Um, and William, you, you're going against, uh, a defensive coordinator. A lot of people are saying, well, Jim knows has come in. It's going to take two years to get acclimated to assist him.
Well, he brought two coaches, three players with him. Another one went AWOL on him, but you're going against one of the best defensive coordinators in college football. And you've got a game plan like that. William, you're right. There's no way you can be successful. I guarantee you, I'm not saying, you know, to, to this extent, but some version of this conversation, you know, since the Georgia game, um, is taking place on a Sunday at all the football complexes. I'm in the Southeastern conference that they're still, you know, have or left to have to play Alabama, you know, uh, coach a is calling coach B at the school that just got through playing and saying, Hey man, just fax me your game plan.
[1:42:03] And I'll get the AD to wire $500,000 to y'all's AD. Um, it's, it's, it's a rinse and repeat scenario. You know, that that's, that's the other thing that's become a pattern here is it happens more often than not when they're the visiting team on the road and it happens more often than not when it's just a subpar to a decent defense. Um, you know, when, when they come up against somebody, you know, that's got obvious deficiencies like a South Carolina and, um, you know, Kentucky and, and, and people like that, um, you know, that they, they just, this, you know, this, this offense, you know, functions at a pretty high level, but man, when you, when you come up against the George's and the Tennessee's and I listen, there's no guarantee that you're not going to see a repeat of it Saturday.
Um, you know, I mean, uh, unlike Tennessee, I don't think A&M is going to, you know, put a quarterback on the field that they asked not to put the ball in harm's way. I mean, Reed's kind of got some Lenore sellers in him. He's, he's generous with, with given turnovers, but let me tell you something. Elko's a h*** of a defensive mind and he's got the athletes to pull that same scheme off. So obviously we, and we know where Alabama is. They've always played golf.
If you've got with boys that gives us a mulligan, I think Alabama's out of mulligans. They're down 13. It ended a day. They'd miss the playoffs. This is just two weeks after having the number two offense as far as scoring in the country and a top five ranking, uh, back-to-back defensive minds that took their pride away. Let's say this plays out. This is, they lose again and they miss the playoffs. It's easy to say, well, you fire the coach, William in 2026. What do you do? If you are the brain trust, given what that would mean financially to take the flush on that, as far as the entire staff, the buyouts, bringing to somebody else and what that does for the NIL budget, trying to buy players going forward.
What, what is realistic in a worst case scenario? Well, I, I don't think it's at that point yet, but let's just say that there is another loss. Um, they get eliminated from the playoffs. Right. You know, that, that's going to be viewed, um, as an abject failure. In year three. You know, in year three. Mm-hmm. Um, you know, I think a lot of it will have to, you know, depend on, you know, the three-point loss at home to Georgia, I don't think is going to be the issue.
No, no, no. You know, the whipping at Tennessee, and if there is any more, you know, whippings that take place, either at that, you know, this bunch has been pretty good at home. Mm-hmm. Um, but, you know, you got that visit to another pretty tough place to play in, in, uh, three weeks, you know, down there. So, you know, I would think the initial flush would be, you know, hey, Kalen, um, we're going to give you one more shot to get this right, but you're going to have to make some changes with the coordinators.
That's right. Um, and, oh, by the way, um, we're not asking, we're telling. Yeah. Exactly. Uh, William, the Masher Report, Kalen DeBoer came out today and was quite vague. Uh, well, we'll see, and they're week by week. And particularly, Rayson Delgotti and Terrence Green, what are you hearing there? You know, I, I think there's a chance Green is back probably before Delgotti. Um, you know, I, I think we, we have to be, you know, a little bit cautiously optimistic with the bye week coming up, but, you know, based on, you know, the stuff that I've heard, um, I think Green might have a chance to come back before Delgotti, but, you know, I, I think you'll, you'll know, you know, by Wednesday on that, when that injury report comes out, but prior to, um, you know, LSU, um, you know, what we're looking at here, but, you know, those are, and again, man, you're, you're going to probably get the, you know, the injury excuse.
Um, and that's all it is. I mean, everybody, you know, I think Miami, you know, Miami's got like four or five starters that they're down and, and, you know, they almost, it almost cost them Saturday night, but, um, you know, that, that's where we are, you know, you, if you remember, that's kind of where this, this outfit was last year at this time, you know, they were, they were gangbusters in September and when a couple of injuries started creeping up, you know, you saw the, that's exactly right.
Um, you know, you kind of saw the scores tighten up and, um, you know, games were, you know, had to, had to be pulled off in a, in a magician type manner. And, and so, um, it, like I said, it's a pattern and it's an uncomfortable one for, you know, Alabama fans. The interesting of the situation with Crowell as well, when we get the official list later on the week, but, uh, let's face it. First things first, nobody's going to feel sorry for you. And what's going to happen Saturday against the Aggies?
[1:47:09] Well, I mean, and that's, that's part of it, man. I mean, these guys, including the players, you know, they're making way too much money for, you know, sympathy cards to be mailed out, um, you know, and there again, man, I mean, if, if you see, um, another slow start, you know, just, you know, critical mistakes made that are unforced errors, um, chunk plays, you know, being made on the defense and you're going to see the boo birds come out in full force. I wouldn't be surprised to see, you know, not, not a half empty stadium, but I guarantee it's not going to be sold out.
Um, and homecoming, you know, that's exactly. And then, you know, that's, that's what this kind of, um, production that that's the kind of results that yields. And, and, you know, there's, there's only, you know, one group of people, um, down there in the Malmore football building that can change the trajectory that they're on right now. It's not a good one. Yeah, absolutely. Well, I hope Monday's been better than Saturday afternoon. Believe me for a while. Let me tell you, let me tell you something. That's one thing that, that's one thing that old age, um, you know, provides you with a little bit of wisdom.
I walked in and saw that ridiculous defensive set. I grabbed a clicker, turned it off and drove to Academy and bought some, some fishing tackle because that's where I'm going to be Saturday afternoon. I'm going to be fishing. I'm not going to be watching the Aggies. So what are you going to be kicking some basses? Oh Lord. No, no, man. With this stable, cool weather, I'm going to be looking for those, those, those spotbacks, those crappies. There you go. Good eating. I always enjoyed the conversation, my friend.
Even if it's a bad, bad topic, great wait for Monday. Listen, have a great week, William. Hey, y'all too. Hey, hey, I think we still have our license at that interview. Yes, we do. Your final thoughts over the weekend, Brett. Well, it's just frustration for everybody. Harold, again, it was a terrible game plan. Again, kudos to Tennessee. And Georgia and Auburn. Jim knows had a master class. Kudos to Auburn. But, again, five out of the top seven teams in the poll lose. I think we're going to continue to see that trend throughout the season.
Well, if Motown was still in business up there, they would be having a song in Tuscaloosa called Soul Searching. It is soul searching time in T-Town for this coaching staff. That's going to take care of business for now. On behalf of BB, Greg, James Blair, the entire crew here. Harold Boggs, thank you so much for your time today. Let's do it again tomorrow. Tune to the Boomo Bugg Show back here on Sports Radio 93.9 The Score.
