As the good old USA celebrates 250 years as its birthday in 2026, the Florence Falcons are playing game number 250 in school history tonight. And what a night it could be. A historic night possibly for the Falcons. With a win, they could wrap up their first region title since 2014. Welcome to Florence Falcons football. Hello everyone. I'm Kevin Johnson, voice of the Florence Falcons. Welcome to the TNT fireworks pre-game show here on your home of Florence Falcons football. 93.9 The Score.
It is a windy, blustery night. We are outside in the elements. We apologize already for the wind you'll hear through the microphones. But there's no room in the press box for us. So we're on the home side, our visitor side, I should say, where Florence is. And it's going to be a very windy night. And the wind already we're seeing playing some factors, even in warm-up a little bit here tonight, as well as the cold front moves through. Joined now by my good friend and color analyst Mike Albertson. And Mike, a meal at Bob Gibson's and a win by Florence could make for a nice Friday night.
It could be one of the best Friday nights I can remember. You know, look, at this point, we've really taken care of business 7-0, and we could lock up the region right now. So it's one of those opportunities that, you know, as we look forward to this evening, we could have a real special Friday night here. Let's rewind to one year ago. Florence had a chance to win a region title outright and did not happen. Tonight, it's a chance to make sure that doesn't happen again.
Absolutely. And after the letdown last year, these returning players will show me a lot about who they are and how they approach this game. You know, those guys, if they don't have a bad taste in their mouth and don't understand what's at stake, you know, I got nothing for you. Coach really has a lot of work ahead, and he's going to show those players and have them ready for tonight. I've still got a bad taste in my mouth just as a broadcaster. I'm sure they have to.
You have to, as a competitor, knowing that situation and knowing that you could have locked it up and you wound up finishing fourth at that point and getting sent down to Baker, which, you know, with controversy, you know, you really, after a special season like that, to be sent off and to miss out on an opportunity to reach a championship is definitely one that you've got to remember as a player. Kevin Johnson, Mike Albertson here with you at Austin High School in the wind, in the cold front that's moved in.
I'm going to estimate about 58 degrees, but the wind probably gusting up to 25 to 30 miles an hour even at times tonight. So we'll bring the broadcast for you. We've got everything buckled down and taped down, and I could even have a little rain. Hopefully that will stay away, but we're trying to be prepared for that as well. And looking forward to a great game as both teams are warming up here on the field at this time. And, Mike, Austin had a – well, they had our number, let's be honest about it, over the past few years.
And last week, Austin once again showed this year they can be a dangerous team. They scored three touchdowns in the last nine minutes to beat Hartzell. They are a dangerous team every year. They certainly are. They have athletes all over the field. They're well coached. You know, and this year is no different. They always have an athletic quarterback. They always have a real tough, strong running back. And we saw that last year. That running back took over a fourth quarter against us. But in our last 11 times playing Austin, we've only won twice.
So 2-9 in that time, that's not a great record, obviously. But we've broken some records earlier this year, some of those poor streaks that we've had. And so this could be one of those nights where we really set the tone for who the Falcons are today. Well, let's find out because through seven games, this Falcons team has played lights out. They're a hungry team. Don't you sense, Mike, when you look at them, there's a hunger there? And there's a – I mean, this team just has a different DNA a little bit about them.
They certainly do. And, you know, this is a – you know, from top to bottom, the whole program has a different feel to it. You know, as things have grown here over the last several years, Coach Morrison has things right where he wants them. The depth is as deep as they've been. And really and truly, you know, when you're looking at this team, they handle their business a lot differently than it has been in years past. And so they have an opportunity tonight to make this, once again, a real special season and continue on that winning path.
[5:21] On Thursday morning, I got to speak with the head coach of the Florence Falcons, Coach Kenny Marson, who spent many years at Decatur High School and knows Austin quite well. Here is his thoughts on tonight's game. Joined now by head coach Kenny Marson, the Florence Falcons. And, Coach, here we are getting ready for the next-to-last region game, but it's a big one for the Florence Falcons. Huge game, for sure. We've got a lot on the line, region championship in our hands. You know, it's all in our lap right now.
But that's where you want it to be. Your kids have done exactly what you've asked them to do week after week. Yeah, absolutely. This is where we want to be. We don't want somebody to have to do it for us. We've got an opportunity to do something we didn't do last year. We didn't know that the Austin game last year would hold so much weight later in the year. It was a week four game. And had we won that game, we'd have won a region championship last year.
But we didn't. And then we had to have some help, and we got help. And then had it back in our hands against Spartan and didn't get it done on the last drive of the game. So we've got a lot of redemption time for us. Let's talk about tonight's game coming up with Florence at Austin. Weather could be a little bit of a factor, wind especially. Yeah, it's going to be cool. It's finally going to be some football weather. Definitely looking at the wind. We've already started looking at it all week.
You know, saw that coming. So we wanted to look at how we're going to play the coin toss. That will be interesting and how that plays out. Coach, before I let you go, just right now, as you look at coming up this opportunity, back-to-back years your teams have been in this situation. You've got to feel good about where your program is. These guys expect to be here. Yeah, they do. And, you know, we know we're hearing a lot of stuff out of Austin over there saying that, you know, we're Florence.
We're going to tap out and just keep hitting them. They'll quit, that kind of stuff. And that's not who this team is. That's not who this program is now. They said, you know, there's been some comments made that they're Florence. We know what they'll do. Well, they don't know the real Florence. And that's what we are right now. It's a different time, different day and age. And we're ready to get over there and roll. Let's go have fun. Let's go. Coach Kenny Morrison, the Florence Falcons.

Florence High School Athletics has been on 93-9 the score since 2004. And Mike Albertson, I'm Kevin Johnson. Glad to be with y'all. And Mike, I was going to say, tonight's game 250, broadcasting from A174, but I'll be honest with you, take a little pride in this. I've seen 249 of the 250 games. I've seen almost every game. I thought about that this week.
I thought, that is a lot of Florence High School games I've seen over the years. It certainly has. And we did that trip down memory lane in our little group text. I'm near 150 somewhere, but 250, man. That's a whole heck of a lot. You know, I'm almost afraid to ask, what was the one that you missed? I can tell you, Vestavia Hills to start the season. And Florence won it 13-7. But Treva and Matthew were getting married, and I'm the minister, so I had to be at the wedding rehearsal.
So I did what I was supposed to do first, but that's the only game I've ever missed in Florence history there. But this is one I'm looking forward to, and I think all the Falcon fans are as well. And I know a couple of Falcon fans on their way right now, waiting to get here. The athletic director, Coach Meyer Miles, and also the assistant associate athletic director, I should say, Coach Tim Bowens, on their way here. They're listening right now. Coach Bowens, on behalf of the radio crew, happy birthday, by the way.
It's a big day for you, so happy birthday, and we won't tell how old you are. If you'll be nice to us, we'll be nice to you. But one of the good guys right there. His birthday must always fall on the Alabama-Tennessee weekend, so that has to be pretty special to him, too. So best of luck to him tomorrow in that as well. Mike Albertson, let's talk about this game tonight. One of the most impressive things of this Florence team is if a player has gone down, it seems like Florence doesn't miss a beat.
[10:31] That is not always heard of. It definitely is, and you know what? This is really that Coach Morrison always says, that next man up mentality. You can't worry about her boo-hoo when a player goes down. Obviously, you don't like that happening. However, that next player that comes in, having them prepared and ready to go is super important, and those players have shown to do that. This is about as deep of our program that I've ever seen. I've been around 14 years. This is the deepest squad, top to bottom, that I've ever seen.
We've had plenty of young sophomores and even some freshmen step in at times. We're just top to bottom. Each and every class, from seniors on down, we definitely help out, and they produce for this program. And that next man up is the reason why, just being able to work hard and practice. When those lights are on and your number is called, you're prepared to go. Did I mention the wind gusts are up to about 30 miles an hour? Because they are showing that from time to time here, I believe.
And we're about 50 minutes away from kickoff of this big game. Wind will play a factor. We'll talk about it in a few minutes. But, Mike, Austin is a team that Florence has played year after year in 7A. I mean, Austin is not going to be intimidated by Florence. But, likewise, Florence is not going to be intimidated by Austin, either. When you have a familiar foe like this, this isn't one of those things where you look across the way and you're kind of unsure about who you're playing with.
They know exactly who they're playing. Coach Perkins has been around, and Coach Morrison's been around. You know, the players have played against each other every year since they were in middle school. So, this is one of those familiar foe situations where there's no intimidation factor. Just get out and play ball. That is a big part of that as well. But, you know, let's welcome in, get ready to welcome in our third member of the crew, Jeffrey Jones here. And Jeffrey's our sideline guy. Also, he goes and gets our equipment when we need it, including umbrellas, because we're afraid that some rain might be headed this way, a little bit of doing everything.
Jeffrey, the wind, the weather could be a factor, no doubt. It's been a factor already. I know that. It is. It's not that cold, but the wind is just coming hard. And so, it's definitely watching these teams punt into the wind, they can just forget that. They either need to line drive, punt it, or just go for it if it's not too deep in their own territory. Because this wind is crazy. Well, let's talk about a couple of things, J.J. One is, sort of strange to say this, but this is the first true road game since game one.
It really feels like that, doesn't it? Yeah, you mentioned that first game of the year when we were on our way to Pinson. You said, you know, we're really not going to travel outside of the Shoals area until the Austin game. And even then, it's not, you know, I hate coming over to Decatur. I just, I don't like, I don't like being over here. I don't like Austin, you know, I'll be honest. But, I really, it's an easy. Just let it out, J.J., we're here for you.
I've got some frustration all week, pinning up on this one. So, you know, it's an easy drive, though, thankfully. But, yeah, we haven't played outside the Shoals area. There are only two away games that have been Muscle Shoals and Rustable during that stand. And, you know, we only have three technical long games this year, long away games. And that happens every other year when we're going to have Rustable and Muscle Shoals on the schedule. If we travel to both of them, that's a short road trip.
So, it's been an easy road schedule so far. And I'm kind of wondering if that's going to play a factor. You know, we haven't had a, as a radio crew, we haven't had an hour-long car ride since game one of the year. The weather was a little bit different then. But, you know, I think that we kind of know what's at stake. We've heard a little bit of the talk from the Austin side this week. And, you know, it's going to be one of those things that, you know, we're going to see, kind of like Mike Albertson said on the way up here, we're going to see how manly we are and how good our memory is from last year.
Yeah, nine weeks ago at Benson Valley, it's about a 55-degree difference, that's for sure. As we're talking with Jeffrey Jones, our sideline reporter. And J.J. Florence hasn't faced much adversity on the scoreboard either other than the Muscle Shoals game. And that's something that maybe we could see tonight. Well, it's not to say that we haven't had stress every week. We've stressed every week about Russell. We've stressed about, you know, a little bit about Decatur. We didn't stress so much about East Limestone. Athens gave us a little bit of trouble early.
But for the most part, we have not been trailing in the second half. And we haven't really been trailing after the first quarter much, if at all. I don't remember the time we were. But we have been scored on first. But other than that, you know, it's been pretty smooth sailing, knock on wood. I anticipate if we have our ducks in a row this week, you know, with it being an off week, the schedule and the timing and everything is a little bit off. And that always scares me.
And I know it scares you all. We're probably four of the more routine-oriented people in the world. And these kids don't realize it. But living with an administrator, I hear it all the time. Routine, routine, routine. Get them off their routine and you could have problems. So they've been out of school all week. They've been practicing at odd times in the mornings and whatnot, which is, you know, it's just one of those things. We're going to see how well we adapt and adjust tonight. J.J. Florence has been playing with confidence.
[15:41] They can't become overconfident, though, can they? Well, and that's a problem that, you know, this is the best season we've ever had. And we're not used to this. We haven't been in this position. I don't remember if we've ever been in a position or any team from Florence has ever been in this position. So, you know, Coffey, Bradshaw, and the like, you know. So we'll see how we handle it. You know, the worst thing a 16-, 17-, 18-year-old kid can do is listen to the hype that we sometimes spill on the radio and sometimes the newspaper puts out there as well.
And mainly social media. That's the big thing. They watch that. Players of the week. We've had multiple players of the week, which, you know, congratulations to the guys for being players of the week. But, you know, they need to make sure that, hey, next week you start a clean slate. You are not the player of the next game, player of the week next game. You've got to earn it. I think we started off with 93.9 The Score has been the official voice of the Falcons. And now I think we've got about 70,000 trying to join in because everybody wants to jump in on this 7-0 start.
Yeah. But that's a good thing that the Falcons have done and they've handled it well so far. I'll tell you someone else who handles it well every Friday night is James Moody. He is in the 93.9 The Score studios giving you updates on all the games from around the state and around the shows area. And let's send it to him in the nice, comfortable, unwendy studios of 93.9 The Score. James, take it away. Thank you, Kevin. Yes, it is quite comfortable in here. We're going to be keeping up with all the action tonight.
And we had some pretty good action last night. Huntsville beat Bob Jones 28-17. Deschler beat Brooks 44-7 in a statewide televised game. Fairview beat Crossville 41-6. Huntsville falls to Hoax Bluff 49-8. Mae Jemison over Lee 32-6. And Meek defeated Phillips 54-6. Tonight we'll be keeping up with all the action, including but not limited to West Limestone and Central. We got Whitesburg Christian, Decatur Heritage, Russellville, Decatur, Calvert Heights, Elkmont, Calvert County, Falkville, Tanner, Lexington, Hazel Green, James Clemens, Spartman, Grissom, Cherokee, Hackleburg, Sheffield, Phil Campbell, Belgring, Waterloo, Rogers, Wilson, also Tennessee, and Mississippi action.
Going to keep up with the ALCS game four. Cleveland leading that one two to one. Got a college slate, Memphis, Tulane, Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Washington, Purdue. We'll be keeping up with all those. And you can join myself and Blair Krieger from 10 to midnight tonight during the AHSAA statewide scoreboard show. We'll be giving you all the finals from the local games and from everything else. So join us for that. And now we rejoin the crew for more of the pregame show. Thank you, James Smitty. We're here at Austin High School.
Kevin Johnson and the crew, as he says, with you here on 93.9 The Score. Big thank you to Garner Pierce Auto for our courtesy vehicles this season. They're great folks, great deals. TNT fireworks pregame show, Florence Falcons football, Kevin Johnson and the crew. We're glad to be with you tonight on the road at Austin High School, trying to go 8-0 are the Falcons on the season and trying to wrap up their first region championship in 12 years.
But an angry group of black bears standing in their way and a tough opponent each and every season. We know that each and every time these two teams tangle. Mike Albertson and Florence did not, they did lock up a playoff berth, which is always good. Glad they got that done. More is at stake, but they do have that in their back pocket already there in postseason play. Yeah, I mean, look, any time that you can make the playoffs and give yourself a shot at the map, it's really a good thing.
[20:48] You know, this is the sixth straight year that that's happened. It's the earliest clinch that I can remember in years. And, you know, our region winds up matching up against region six. However, really, the prize is the region championship. We missed out on it last year. It was unfortunate, controversy, tiebreaker stuff, all the things. Let's just take all the controversy out of it and just win it on the field tonight, get it over with. And, Mike, one more thing for us. I'll bring in John here in a second.
And that is, tonight is the Falcons are warming up in their white jerseys, white pants, blue helmets. There's two number tens out on the field warming up tonight. Jaden Ward on defense and Kayon Williams back, ready to play tonight on offense. It's good to have the sophomore running back who was electric in the first three games. It definitely is, you know, just having a weapon like that is obviously important. But also, you know, and most importantly, the fact that he's healthy enough to be back. You know, you don't want to ever see a kid sideline because of an injury or anything like that.
It happens because football is kind of a brutal sport. However, you know, just having him back after injuries, it's just good to see him. And there is an extra hop in his step. You've seen him warm up and everything. And he's ready to go. Let's go to our statistician. Our good friend John McDaniel is with us. John, you doing all right tonight and friend on this cold, blustery night? Yeah, we're doing great. I'm glad that you reminded all of us earlier in this week that we needed to bring some warm layers.
Appreciate Jeffrey for loaning me his heated jacket. At least maybe keeping mine working. I don't know. I'm just glad he plugged it back up for you. That's kind of where I'm going. That's pretty nice of it as well. Yeah, appreciate it. Let's talk about, John, this Falcons team. They're highly touted, especially on defense. About to face, though, a different type of test tonight. This is going to be, of course, we're going to mention it all pregame. This is the best test for the Falcons team, especially the defense they've played all season.
Last year, essentially, a lot of the same players, 257 yards rushing in the game, almost 400 yards of offense. And Mr. Aiden Davis, the starting tailback, ran wild last year. And I would assume most of the guys remember it and are looking forward to exacting a little revenge. It may not be the same season, but if I was a player, I would not have forgot something like that. And it's going to be tough. They've got some extremely large linemen. They have one lineman, Kevin, listed at 400 pounds. His lightest listing is 350, so not really on a diet if you're at 350, are you?
I'll just say this. They had his picture up at Big Bob Gibson's. That's all I'm going to say. He is known there quite well. He is a big boy at an offensive tackle. And there's another one that's pretty big as well. And they will run behind that size and that weight. And that brings me to my next question is, how do you fight off those guys that are that big as a defender? You played linebacker, and you've had to go against bigger opponents. How do you fight off the blocks?
My very first thought when I read the question, Kevin, was you don't. Yeah. You run. First off, you don't technically run in front of them, but you try to use your technique. You try to beat them. If they're big and strong, you've got to be quick and fast. And so you want to make sure that you get them moving or you beat them to the spot. But if you have to take them on, you want to initiate the contact. In this case, as a linebacker or defender, you want to make the pot.
You want to initiate with them. You want to separate with your arms and use their body and that large mass to use them to fill the hole. You've got to know your assignments, but make sure you're working hard and you're really following your keys. But you take the fight to them is always the best way to go. All right. One of the things I love about this Florence team, and maybe it's just in my DNA of myself, is they have blocked a few punts this year, block kicks, harassed punters.
It seems like special teams Florence has won that every game and has paid off. But knowing how to block a kick, you and I both know, it's more than just running back there and blocking. It takes an art. Last night, as a matter of fact, in a college game, UEB had a chance to block a punt and was there, but he missed the ball and he hit the punter. Remember, there's an art to blocking kicks, isn't it? Yeah, there's seven. It is 100% a skill and not just luck.
Starts with timing. When are you getting off the ball? Watching the snapper to see, can you get any tells about when the snap is going to go? That's where you start with. You want to be there quick. Second is not, of course, everybody thinks you want to go to the punter. You want to go where the punter's foot or toe is going to be. And actually, I've always just ahead of him. You don't want to go to his toe. You want to be just ahead of him.
And so you're gauging that angle of where you're going to be. And lastly, it's when you dive to maximize your surface area, simply, you don't want to dive flat, perpendicular, or parallel to the ground. You want to angle just maybe 10, 15 degrees so that all of your body is exposed and the best chance you get to block the ball. So all three of those are elements to getting to it, but when you do it, it can turn the game. Yeah, absolutely. Block kids can turn the game.
[25:57] They've had trouble, Austin has, with the bad snaps on punts over the heads longer, but they've gotten rid of their punts. But London Petty Poole for Florence has been pretty good. He does something a little different. He goes to the side and just reaches out a hand and tries to catch it. He did block one like that this year and almost blocked the second one as well. And the teams are both warming up still here. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. And can you give us just an update a little bit about the weather on the sideline and the wind, how it is down there on the surface?
I thought we covered this already. It's windy no matter where you stand. Actually, it's not so bad as bad down here. I was talking to Lauren Costin-Mahen just a minute ago, and they were freezing. They sent it to Clare to get some blankets at the store. So a couple of store runs are going to be made today for those that aren't prepared. But, you know, the wind is blowing. It's not blowing like it is up there, I'll be honest. It's a little bit – it doesn't feel as bad.
But, you know, you look at that flag over there by the Austin locker room, and it is definitely swirling. So, you know, I think that it's going to maintain the whole game. It's going to definitely play a role in decision-making for these coaches going north to south. The wind seems to be coming out of the north to the south. So, you know, at this point on the coin toss, if we win it, I might make my decision based on the wind more than if we're going to defer or get the ball.
That's going to be an interesting thing that coaches will have to decide about what they will do if they win the toss, that type of thing. Austin to our right, wearing all black, orange letters, black helmets. They are to the Austin locker room to our right. Florence to our left, to the scoreboard side, if you're familiar with Austin High School. We're on the visitor's side getting ready for tonight's game. Austin Black Bears are coached by Jeremy Perkins. He is the veteran coach of this region, 17 seasons at Austin High School with a record of 117 and 70 overall.
His teams have been in the playoffs 12 of 16 years. So he's done a great job of getting teams in the playoffs each of those seasons. Kenny Marson, much the same when he's had the opportunity. He has put his teams in the playoffs each season for Florence High School in his fifth year here at Florence High School. So he'll be five for five on that, 63 and 23 on his career. He did win a state title at Fayetteville High School in Tennessee. And they won it in 2020 right before COVID.
And one of the great things about that team is they did a good job of everything. Let's go down to Jeffrey Jones, who has to head coach Kenny Marson with him. Coach, tell me about your week of practice so far. Guys handle it pretty well. I mean, we went to 8 to 11 every morning just trying to give the guys a break and give our coaches a break in the afternoon. It's definitely out of the routine, but, you know, we had homecoming week was out of our routine.
We've had a bunch of routine changes throughout. So I hope our guys handle it well like they did before. We preach about routines in our household with these kids, you know, how important it is to stay on that routine. One thing that's not kind of been routine this year is us traveling. This is the longest game we've taken in the last five weeks down to Birmingham. Would that affect anything? No, no. It's just another road game. We're used to coming over here to Austin. It's not a far trip for us.
But our guys have done this many times, so we should be good. You and I have discussed this before. I don't like Austin, I'll be honest, and I'm not sure you really like him that much either. So how good would it feel to come in here and stomp these guys and go home to the region champs? Well, for our kids, for sure. You know, I want it for our community as well. It's not about me and not about Austin. It's about these young men that work extremely hard to get where they are right now, and they deserve some payoff tonight.
Thanks, Coach. Good luck. Great answer there from Kenny Marson, the head coach of the Florida Stocks. I hate those politically correct answers. You know what I mean? I want to say, hey, thanks for Godfinding me, Coach. Hey, that's one of those where you were doing the trap question for me a little bit there. He said, I'm not falling. Let's be honest. This is a victory going home against the Black Bears. That's right. That's going to be great. Florence and Austin meet for the 21st time tonight.
Austin leads that series 11-9. They blew out Florence last year 34-6, and they have lead the series, I said, 11-9, and many of those have come in the past few years. They actually have won nine of the last 11. When we come back, we'll continue our way to kickoff as we count down here on the TNT Fireworks pregame show. You'll be back here in two minutes. It was just 19 years ago on October 26th before a huge crowd at Brawley Stadium when the Florence Falcons took on the Huntsville Panthers for the region championship.
An incredible game found the Falcons holding on to a 27-21 lead late, but the Panthers were driving to the Falcons' 35-yard line with less than a minute to go. But it was then that Florence's DJ Bonton picked off a Huntsville pass and raced 70 yards to seal the Falcons' first-ever region championship in 2007. Still to this day, I could tell you almost every play of that night. 19 years later, the 2026 Florence Falcons have a chance to write their own story and bring home their third region title in school history.
This Falcons team showed us early on in the wins over Pinson Valley and Jasper that the offense could be explosive. But then in a 7-0 win over Muscle Shoes, we realized this Falcons defense was really, really special. In 7 wins, this Falcons team has yet to trail in the second half of a game. And they have scored 34 points in 6 of their 7 victories. Head coach Kenny Morrison has been upfront and transparent with his team all season. But this week, more than ever before, his message to his team all week long was very simple.
Pressure is a privilege. Instead of avoiding the elephant in the room, Coach Morrison has embraced it, and so has his team. With winning comes the pressure of the next opponent. You are no longer the hunter, but the hunted. The pressure isn't something to be avoided, but something to embrace. A chance, an opportunity, even a legacy is at stake. Tonight, the boys representing the city of Florence look to bring home its first region title in 12 years. How will this game end up? We're about to find out.
But I know one thing for sure about this 2026 edition of the Florence Falcons, and it's this. They love the Friday night lights, and they will embrace the moment. Let's go, boys. It's time to go win a region championship. Florence Falcons football, it starts right now. We're about 26 minutes away from kickoff of Florence and Austin here at Austin High School. Kevin Johnson, Mike Albertson, Jeffrey Jones, and John McDaniel. Glad to be with you tonight. Falcon crowd really starting to fall in here across the way. The Austin crowd.
It's homecoming for the Black Bears, I understand. So they've chose a windy night on homecoming, and they chose the Falcons for homecoming. So that plays in our favor a little bit as well. Anytime it seems like teams have chosen us for homecoming, it's not paid off well for the team that did. So we'll see if that plays off for the Falcons. Mike Albertson, the Florence Falcons could return a few players tonight, as we said, including Kayon Williams. Elijah Hines not back in the lineup tonight. But, you know, sometimes it takes time to ease back in.
We'll see. Every player's different, though, right? No, absolutely. You know, every player, every personality, you know, there are some guys that need to touch the ball all the time. Other guys that touch the ball a couple times that can make a direct impact on the game. You know, but having Williams back, obviously, is a great weapon here for the Falcons. But, you know, even we had our bye week a couple weeks ago, plus last week we rested a couple guys a good bit, didn't get near the snaps that they're used to getting, just kept them kind of in game shape a little bit.
[36:12] But, you know, anytime these new guys are coming back, it takes a minute to just get back in the flow and the speed of the game. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. I was laughing a minute just looking at Jeffrey because he is always sharp looking. But this is one of those nights, if you're a fan here, you are not looking sharp. You're just trying to stay warm, trying to stay dry. But there's still a lot of blue out here, so it's good to see that right now as the Falcons are getting into the locker room and the Black Bears as well.
And, John, we talked about a couple of things. One of them is possessions tonight could be limited, possibly, especially when you talk about a team like Austin that likes to run the ball a lot. Yeah, certainly this environment, the conditions, the wind that's blowing so strong, that's just playing into their favor, no doubt. They're a power run team. They've got a couple of heavy running backs that they just started the game last week with about six different just take the quarterback out, wildcat, right downhill. Even, like, eight or nine guys on the line of scrimmage.
There was, like, one wide receiver, and the rest were on the line of scrimmage. So, let's go. A hundred percent. Two tight ends, two running backs in front, two lead blockers. That's eight running backs. And they just ran power just down the field. And then, of course, they've got Aiden Davis, who comes in who's the traditional running back. But he's a 210, 15-pound kind of battering ram. And so, they do a great job holding on to the ball, maximizing their possessions. And when you run the ball all game, you keep your defense off the field.
As you said, you reduce the number of possessions. And the Falcons are going to have to hold on to the ball. We had two turnovers in the game last year. And it's not been something the Falcons have had a big issue with. But in a game that's going to be close, every possession is going to count. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. He's got his blood pressure down now. We gave him his medicine. He's all good down there. J.J., playing away is not easy. But this stadium here, one thing about it, on the visitor's side, I like it for this reason.
The stands are right on top of the field and on the sideline. The Falcons players are going to hear the crowd tonight. Yeah, it's very close on this. We're losing you a little bit, J.J. I'm not sure if I caught you at the bad place. We'll let you get more adjusted here. But you're breaking up on us pretty good. J.J. may be out there at the car trying to get something to the car. I didn't know it. I was over there in the building.
Is it better? That's much better, yeah. Now that he comes outside again, he was inside, guys. He was getting dry. That's all he was, blocking the wind. I was just checking it out, seeing what the wind was like up against that brick wall over there. But, yeah, as far as playing here, it's a new field, still a relatively new high school. You know, I say new, what is this, about six years old, five or six years old? Probably so. But good technology. You know, some of these places we go, it's updated stadiums and some need some work.
But this one's certainly new. And, you know, I probably would have changed a couple things up, you know. But it's a good stadium. We haven't had the best of luck here as far as weather goes. You know, last time, not the last time, but the time before we were here, we had a pretty long lightning delay. And, you know, when you're sitting in the metal bleachers right there, the last place you really want to be is sitting in any of those bleachers. So we had to take a little bit of refuge in the car and in the nice weight room facility they have over here on the north end.
But, you know, as far as the typical weather turns right when we come over here to Austin, it's going to be, you know, another one of those factors that we're going to have to overcome. You know, it's just a simple fact of it. There's a lot of things that are playing in Austin's favor tonight. Yeah, like Mike said on the way over here, there's a recipe tonight. And, you know, we have to be on our game in order to come out of here on the good end.
That is well said by J.J. there. And, you know, Florence comes in this game averaging 37 points a game. That's ninth best in 5A, by the way, giving up 13 points on defense, which is seventh best as well here tonight. So Florence averaging 336 yards per game, 266 rushing, and 71 yards passing. Austin on the other side is averaging 28 points a game, but they're giving up almost 26 points a game. And Florence has scored, by the way, 34 points on more – six out of seven games this season. So Florence's offense has been really big.
Let's look at potential starting lineup tonight for the Florence Falcons. We'll start with the offensive side, and we'll start right there at running back. We'll go with DeCarson Johnson, who could go over 1,000 yards tonight with a good game. He has 900, I think, plus already on the season. The 5'10", 185-pound senior, Mike, we have talked about him ad nauseum, but the fact is he has really been a phenomenal back that has really carried the Falcons when we need him to the most. He certainly has. You know, we were able to rotate backs early in the season.
We had three guys that could really tote the rock. But, you know, as it were, you know, a couple guys got dinged up along the way, and he got the lion's share of the duties, and he's earned it. You know, even when those guys come back, they're going to have to, you know, earn each and every touch they have because he's been such a special back here for the Falcons. Quarterback will be Costin Mahan, 6'2", 225, the sophomore. He wears number two. He has done an excellent job this year.
[41:35] He has, I think, six or seven touchdowns on the season. I think it's six officially touchdowns on the season for the sophomore quarterback. That offensive line for Florence has been stellar. So impressed with them so far this season, including Raymond Russell up there at left tackle. The sophomore wears number 71, 6'1", 280. Jacob Harper at center, 5'11", 245, just a junior. He'll be up there wearing number 57. Also in there, Ezra Boyd, a sophomore, wears number 77. He'll play at guard, along with Dre Moore, a senior that's 5'10", 255, wears number 51.
And then also Orlando Rounds, the senior, who wears number 65. On the outside, you'll have a couple wide receivers, Kevontae Green, 6'3", 220. I think Kevontae Green could have a big game tonight. This is the type of team that I sense that Kevontae could really show out. I mean, he has the ability to show out each and every game. He has that type of ability. And, you know, if the opportunity presents itself and he has the ball, he could have a big game. I think that's big. And also J.C. Goolsby, who is our wide receiver, 5'11", 165, a senior, wears number 14.
And the thing about J.C. tonight, the most important job he may have is catching punts, or maybe even more so, Mike, staying away from punts. It's going to be really going to be a terror being able to catch these balls off these punts, you know. And, you know, his ability so far to be able to track those things down. And, you know, he was doing a really good job in warm-ups as well. He's a really special athlete here for the Falcons, and we're going to need him tonight.
Nelson Elliott would also get the start at number 17, 6'5", about 185 pounds. He'll be out there at one wide receiver. You'll also have our kicker, Parker Greenhall, the seniors had an outstanding season. As a punter and as a kicker, he's really going to be tested tonight. Have to be wise on his kicks and being a smart kicker as well. And so everybody's going to have to be on their P's and Q's tonight, getting ready for this matchup against the Austin Black Bears. Again, a big shout-out to our good friends at Garner Pierce Auto for our vehicle and away games.

Kevin Johnson, Mike Albertson, Jeffrey Jones, John McDaniel. Glad to be with you on this one tonight. Should be a huge, huge region game on a windy, blustery night, which could play a factor here in this big, key region matchup. As Florence plays for a potential time to have a region championship, we will say how the playoff or the region championship bears out is this.
Florence wins. They win the region championship. If they lose the next week, Austin, if they could win against Russellville, Austin would sneak in and win the region championship. But a lot of things can happen between now and then. So let's just take care of business first and foremost here tonight. And that should be what the Florence Falcons are looking forward to doing as well. You know, Mike, because of the familiarity we talked about with this Austin team, you've got to control your emotions, too. Because this is one of those games where I know the two programs, they know each other well, the kids know each other well.
[46:54] This is one of those where you've just got to control your emotions and not hurt your team, as we've seen other teams do at all levels in the past couple of weeks. You certainly do. You know, controlling your emotions, especially on the road, is super important. You know, there's definitely adversity coming in this game and how they react to it and their abilities to be able to fight through it and continue to focus is going to be important. We're going to toss for a timeout as they get ready for the national anthem.

Back at Austin High School, Kevin Johnson, Mike Albertson, Jeffrey Jones, John McDaniel, glad to be with you on a windy night. And unfortunately, the weather meteorologists are not always perfect, and it is starting to rain a little bit. Light rain and could get a little heavier here for about 20 or 25 minutes.
Our guys are actually covering up because we're outside. We're covering up the best we can. We're going to tape some things down, but I'll carry it for now while they get that done. Because in this whole time, this Falcon seat knew it was not going to be easy to win a region championship. And lo and behold, the fact is, it's going to be weather. It's going to be rain. It's going to be wind. If you're going to win it, well, you're going to have to just do it the hard way.
And let's see if the Falcons can pull that off tonight as umbrellas start popping up across the stadium now. The other thing that's quite interesting is as these umbrellas pop up with the wind blowing, they could get blown away too. So we'll have to be heads up of flying trampolines and flying umbrellas here tonight. Let's look at the Florence defense that will be the starting potential starters for tonight's game. We'll go at the nose guard, Jaden White, 6'3", 275, a junior. He has a – well, I won't give all the stats because they're not updated from last week.
But he has a double digit, so over 20 tackles on the season. And he has forced four fumbles as well. He'll be joined on the defensive line by A.J. Dixon, a junior, 5'9", 240. Where's number 99? He's forced a fumble and a return one for a touchdown as well. Nate Pride also will be there, number 98, junior, 6'2", 60, 17 tackles. One of his big keys is he's great at breaking up passes. But these guys that are on the outside are going to have to really be good to help maybe stop that really big, big running game that Austin has.
[52:28] The middle linebacker will be Bo Burski. He wears number 26, the junior, 6'1", 205. He'll be sliding in there along with Jaden Irons, who wears number 23, the senior, 6'2", 215. Those two guys are big guys. They're going to be really counted on tonight to play well against this Austin team. Outside linebacker, maybe the guy that's the unsung hero of this defense is Jaden Martinez. Where's number 32? Only a junior. The Bandits, 5'10", 170, maybe 180 even. He's a bigger kid than I thought. But he plays really strong, plays well. He'll have a big opportunity tonight to make some big plays.
And then on the other side, you'll have coming in, and I'll get it here in just a minute, a couple others here. Let's get first, let's get the others coming in here. Oh, yeah, here we go. Austin Klotzbach. Austin Klotzbach, 6'2", 205, a senior. He'll wear number 22. We're still taping everything down here, including myself a little bit, trying to stay out of the range some. On the defensive backs, they've got to stay alert, and they've got to make plays as well. Des Brown, 5'10", 175, a senior. He'll be one cornerback on the other, London Petty Poole, who's played well.
He is 5'7", 150 pounds. The defensive backs and the safeties, Landon Rayner. Rayner, 6'1", 165, a senior. He'll be joined by Otis Sistrunk, who is 6'1", 210. You may also hear a lot back there, Caden Ward tonight, 5'11", 160. And, Mike, honestly, if you're the defensive coordinator for Florence, I would think that you would come in here and say, you know, I've got my regular 3-4 defense, but don't be surprised if he doesn't throw a few extra bodies out there to try to go man-to-man against this Austin team that will try to run the ball.
Absolutely, and, you know, especially with this win, the way it's gusting like this, this will highly affect the air game as well. So being able to use, you know, that strategy and take some things off the board will definitely be important. It'll be a chess match throughout, no doubt. The chess match is about to start, too, as now the captain's getting ready to come out for the Falcons. Drew Hill will be one of those, Orlando Rounds. Dre Moore will be one as well. And the last one, I want to make sure to get there, and I have to turn my page here because we're having to lock everything down.
The last one there will be number 90, and that's the Kai Foster, who will be the captain tonight for the Florence Falcons, wearing the road white, blue ladders, blue helmets, and the home team, Austin, wearing all black and orange. As the umbrellas are out, the light rain is falling, blowing really sideways. It don't matter what you do. You're going to get wet. You're going to get cold. Mike, I'm just glad that you wore long pants tonight, you know? Yes, I did not wear long pants tonight. That's right, folks.
That's right. That's my buddy, Mike Allison, again from New Jersey, came tonight. We're bundled up, and he walks down and says, ah, it's not going to be that bad, and he is in shorts. But, hey, you know what? You're not the only one. I've said that before one time. I did see about three other people earlier today wearing shorts, and I was like, those guys are just as dumb as Mike tonight. You know, the other thing I saw tonight, though, is our good friend Parker Driggers, assistant coach for Florence High School, he, too, had on shorts tonight.
He was like, oh, no, this is no problem for us. So, hey, you've got some company there, Mike, so you're not alone, my friend. I'm definitely not alone, and I know that people don't get it, and it's perfectly fine. I don't expect you to know what it's like being me, but this is a July day in New Jersey, so we're good. Man, if it's a July day. Aren't you glad you're in the south? The lights go out here at Austin High School with the spotlight in the A.
It's an orange A with trimmed and black on the 50-yard line. To our left, the end zone will have Austin in that end zone, and to the right as well in orange letters with the black covering behind it there, the background. You know, years ago, Jeffrey Jones, Austin's colors, I believe, used to be orange and brown at one time, if I'm not mistaken, too, but they made that. I think that was more, that was Grissom. That was Grissom, that's right. Grissom had the orange and brown, and they got rid of the brown.
They've always had that ugly orange and black here at Austin. I tell you, folks, if you haven't picked up on it, Jeffrey loves this team tonight. He's looking forward to this one. I'm just ready to get out here, and I want to hit them, hit them in the mouth. That's what I want to say. Well, let's see, the Falcons, will they start fast? That will be a key, and let's talk about that. Mike, you're key for this Falcons team. What do you, Nick Falcons, need to do to win this game tonight?
I've got to look at my notes now that are now bumping away. You're going to have to take a run with it. I'm going to take a run with it. Well, you know, I think it's really going to come down to offensive production this game. You know, our defense, if they do what they do, I think anything over 24 points wins this game. So that's what I'm looking for. I'm looking for the offensive production to be over 24 points. By the way, the Black Bears changed up. They were in blacks and warming up, and they've gone to orange jerseys and black pants.
So they have orange jerseys, black pants, and black helmets with black numbers, sort of, and a white trim. So we'll do our best to be nice to the Black Bears and get their names and all down there. The captains shaking hands, greeting one another. Good sportsmanship there. Let's send it down to Jeffrey Jones. Austin, you're the home team. We'll call you orange or black. Pulling into the visiting team. We'll call you white. Here's my coin. Blue as heads and says heads. Red as tails and says tails.
[57:36] You're going to call it in the air. You're going to let it hit and whatever it shows. You're ready? Call it loud. Heads. He's tails. He's won the toss. He's going to defer, correct? Yes, sir. Austin won the toss. They're going to defer. And Florence is going to pick the side with the wind blowing either against them or to their back. With the wind gusting at about 35 miles an hour, it's time for football and a chance to win a region championship. You're listening to Florence Falcon Football.
We're back in 30. Hello, my name is Keith Medley, and I'm an attorney with the law firm of Johnson, Passeur, Medley, and Burchill. One, two, three, four. Time to play the game. Time to play the game. Stand by for kickoff. It's game time. Florence Falcons football is brought to you by Florence Utility, Florence City School, the law firm of Johnson, Passeur, Medley, and Burchill, the North Alabama Boney Joint Clinic, TNT Fireworks, Yogurt Mountain, Whataburger, Singing River Dentistry, Village Discount Drugs, Hugo's Mexican Restaurant, Iron's Electric, Cypress Creek Indoor Range, Lost Pizza, Henniker Johnson & Layden Insurance, Carbine Construction, First Southern Bank, and Warehouse Tackle. Now let's go to the press box for tonight's game.
Here's the voice of the Florence Falcons, Kevin Johnson. Oh, if we can only be in the press box. We'll be ready to take on the Black Bears. Florence in all white, blue helmets will get ready to return the kick. It'll be back deep. Goolsby and Morris back deep for the Falcons as they'll be going left to right. A seven-man crew having the prayers officials. We appreciate the officials doing the games each and every Friday night. We can't do it without these men who give back to the game as well.
So the Black Bears will get ready to kick it away. Oscar Delgado has been the kicker. He will have the wind to his back is what I'd say. Jeffrey, forgive me. I sort of got turned around. You might can help me. They're kicking with the north wind behind them, correct? They're kicking with the wind behind them, and we're going to be going into the wind in the first quarter. First quarter going into the wind, but I think we're going into the north end zone is what we'll say as that wind is coming sort of from the northwest coming in right now.
Delgado will put it on the left hash. He'll have the wind behind him. Now Austin did recover an onside kick last week in the fourth quarter against Hartsell. That really turned that game for them as well. Are you ready for some 5A football and a region championship? We're about to find out. Delgado approaches, and we're underway. High and deep. Morris will take it in the end zone, and that'll be a touchback. It'll be Falcons football at the 20. You're listening to Florence Falcons football. Let's pause for station identification.
The voice of the Florence High School Falcons, WYTK-FM, Rogersville, Athens, Decatur, the Shoals, 93-9, the score. Florence will have the football to start this pivotal game in Class 5A Region 7 as they take over the Austin Blackbears on the road. It'll be Kirkman wide left, Goolsby, and Elliott to the right, two backs in the backfield. That is Williams, Kayon, and also DeCarson Johnson for Mahan. DeCarson's going to have it off the right side, finds a room, got to cross the 25, up to the 27, all the way out to the 28, giving Adol to carry off the right side.
That's a great job by the Falcons right off the bat, being able to plug up that line of scrimmage and really impose their will right away. DeCarson Johnson with a nice cut inside to make it a nice game for first down. Second down, we'll call it two to go, going into the wind of the Falcons. Two wide to the left, one to the short side is Kirkman on the second two play. Try to get the Blackbears to jump, and they do. That only five yards going the other way.
And this Falcon crowd is large. It's as large maybe here on the Florence side almost as it is on the Austin side. So the Falcon fans here right on top of the Falcon players are going to be loud and proud. I hear a few cowbells, and it'll move the change for the first first down tonight for the Falcons at the 33-yard line. Well, they haven't moved the change yet. They still need to move the change over here. I don't know what's going on, but it's first and 10 at the 33.
[1:02:42] They've got to move the change. The change haven't been moved yet. We're waiting on the change to move. And finally, one chain guy says go to the other end. Jeffrey, you may have to help out on the sideline on that. I'm not sure. First and 10 at the 33. Welcome to Austin. Two backs in the backfield again. This time coming off the left side is Williams. Williams cuts forward. He's got to lose to the 40 and 43. Clip down at the 44. Gain of 11. Welcome back, Kayon Williams. You saw him right away.
He was bringing it around the right side and stuck his foot in the turf and exploded upfield, being able to make a guy miss. He actually almost got horse collared there. They had him from behind, but he was taken down as well. That's a good sign right there. Beautiful. Falcons back-to-back first downs at the 44. Again, off the right side. Again, Kayon with a big blocker off the right side to the 50. Down to 49. Gave him about five or six right there. Brought down by a couple of black bears, but that's enough for a good six-yard game.
Finally, the middle linebacker, Rapporto, comes in and makes the tackle. Lead blocker out there to Carson Johnson, playing a different role there, but really led the way. He really got to that second level and put his pads on the linebacker. Everything to the right side right now for Florence. Second down and five to go at midfield. Two backs still in the backfield. Again, off the right side is Johnson. Cuts it up the middle. Got about two or three that time. This time, a host of the black bears find him and push him back.
But it'll be close to the sticks. Jeffrey Jones, you're down there. It's about a yard short maybe? If that, I'd say about a yard and bringing the big hit. I think that's a first down, isn't it? Yep, it sure is. You're going to move the chains. I got a bad angle right here. We got a much better spot than I thought we'd get. But all the way down to the 46-yard line of Austin, just underway. Ten minutes and change counting here in the first quarter. And Florence, with the first possession, has already moved it into Austin territory.
Florence will have Blank and Kirkland coming off to the right side. Kirkland Blank and Mitch Boyd, excuse me, will be the tight ends. Off the right side again. Going to leave it with Williams up the middle. Breaks a tackle. He stays on his feet. 25, 20, 15, 10. They're chasing him at the five and knock him out of bounds. Inside the five at the three. Make sure he's okay. He hops up okay. Give him about 40 on that one. You could see, you know, as he broke up into the open field, you could see he's still a little hobbled.
He's not 100%, but he's giving it his all. That was all effort right there, making it down inside the five. Spotted down around the four-yard line. First and goal for Florence at the four after Kayon Williams breaks off a 40-yard carry. I said Kayon's behind the fullback to Hada. Two tight ends. Under center is Mahan. Going to leave it off the right side with Kayon. Cuts it up in the middle. Pushes forward to the one, to the touchdown as he puts it in the end zone. And Florence strikes first as Kayon Williams is welcomed back.
And he does it with six points. That's a great job by Williams to be able to find that hole. And he stuck his foot in the turf. He put his head down and he drove through three black bears into the end zone there. That's a great sign for the Falcons to be able to impose their will on that very first drive. Green Hall to attempt the PAT. Mahan to hold. Everything is good. Kick. On the way. Kick. It's good. Florence leads it 7-0. 9.38 to go. Falcons lead it by 7.
This is Falcon football. We're back in 30. Hey Falcon fans, this is Keith at Cypress Creek Indoor Range. Cypress Creek Indoor Range is located at 5060, Highway 157, and Underwood, Petersville. On the web, cypresscreekrange.com, and on social media. Go Falcons! Back at Windy Austin High School, where Florence takes the opening kick into the wind and goes 80 yards. Let's get that last touchdown to 7-0 lead. How did it start out, John McDaniel? Kevin, it was a 7-play, 80-yard total drive, 2 minutes and 21 seconds that came off the clock. It was capped by a 4-yard Kion Williams touchdown, but the big play was the 41-yard run he had down to the 4.
Green Hall will attempt to kick it off. Actually, it's going to be Ward is going to have to come and hold it on the tee because the wind is so strong. Jeffrey Jones, when's the last time you saw that? I do not remember the last time I saw that, to be honest with you. Greenhouse kick is high and hanging. Going to be caught around the 30. Boy, with a catch by the Black Bears and brought down to the 39. That is a tough catch, Mike Albertson. It could have easily been fumbled, but instead it will be the Black Bears following around the 40.
[1:07:51] But we saw that in pregame, once that ball gets up there, it shoots out and it hangs up for a little bit and comes back a yard or two. And so when that ball is hanging up there like that, it's really deceiving and difficult for the players. If anyone's familiar with the catching position, if a ball is fouled behind home plate, it actually curbs back towards the field. It's one of those situations where you've got to get ahead of the ball. Donovan Jarman, the quarterback, with Aiden Davis behind him and Davis off the right side.
Looking for a running room and gets across the 45 to the 50 and stepped out of bounds. And there's that big offensive line for Alston running right behind about 600 pounds of right tackle and right guard. And they get a first down right away. Yeah, this is going to be a battle in the trenches this game. I mean, there's not going to be too many balls in the air, but they're going to be running this football game. It's going to be a quick, short game with a running clock.
To the far right will be Finley Knight. The quarterback, Jarman, will have Davis behind him. This time right up the middle. Davis pushes far. He's hit right at the 48 and pushed down at the 47. Gained of about three. And still, they didn't bring him down. He is at least 215 to 220, Mike. He's just a big, hard kid, and he runs hard. He runs as hard as anybody that we'll see all year. He showed it last year. He was definitely tough to come down, to bring him down. And he's just a really super strong back back there.
Second down and six. Sales wide to the right. Two to the left for Jarman. Who's going to give it off to Davis off the right side. He's hit at the line of scrimmage. He's going nowhere. That time the nose guard came up. And 95 says no, sir. Jaden White on the big tackle. That's a big tackle there. That's something that we did not see last year as much, being able to get him at the point of attack and stuff the run on him. Got to watch Gibbs to tie it in.
They like to throw it to him. Wide to the left will be Jones and Finley Knighton. To the right will be Sales. On his third, and we'll call it six to go, the Black Bears have to touch the 40 to get a first down. Trailing Florence 7-0 with eight minutes and five seconds and counting. Play caught. Down to eight. Charming the quarterback with a win behind him. Going to leave it off with Davis, who's trying to bounce around up front. It's going to be hit. Got away, but he gets brought down short of the first down around the 43-yard line.
It'll bring up fourth down. Nice job that the Falcons come up and making the play there was Martinez. And now decision time, and I don't think it's even going to be a decision. They brought in a big fella. I don't know what his name is, but that's an apt description. He is more weight than we've seen, that's for sure. Heavy set for the Black Bears. They have to get to the 40. Don't jump offside through the Falcons. Falcons crowd making some noise. Davis behind Jarman. Davis is going to get it up to the right side, and he got the first down across the 40 to the 39.
That offensive line, but the flag may be on the play. Let's see. Nope. The Falcons were pointing that way, but no, it's first down for the Black Bears at the 39. Get ready. It's going to be a whole dose of running right for this Black Bear team. Florence leads at 7-0, but the Black Bears with back-to-back first downs behind that huge offensive line. Jarman will stay in at quarterback. He is a senior, 5'10", 160 pounds. Again, this time coming left as Davis cuts it back up the middle, found a little run run, stays on his feet across the 30, hit hard there at the 29, but he has enough to move the chains almost again.
It'll be about a nine-yard gain. He was tattooed by Sistruck, though. You're seeing it right away. The pads are popping early in this game. These guys are out and really getting after it. You can see a lot of downhill running, but these guys are hitting just as hard on this defense. I think it's still Davis in the background field right there. Number nine with two wideouts to the left. Jarman, the quarterback, going to lead with Davis right at the middle. Breaks a tackle at the 25 and gets down to the 23 before he brought it down there.
Too much yardage, and they're finding a lot of open field right there. Martinez again on the tackle. Looks like, Kevin, on our D-line, we're kind of trying to get around blocks instead of staying in our gaps a little bit. Need to be a little more fundamentally sound on those. And right now, Austin going with an extra lineman, basically. So they'll have three on that side of the center. Shot good formation again running right as Davis got a runner in, bouncing outside to the 20, 15, 10, 5, and he will score.
Buckle up. It's going to be a good game. As he ran behind that offensive line, and nobody touched him. And everything was run to the right for the Falcons, and everything was run to the right for the Black Bears. And 5.52 to go here in the first quarter. We have a ball game. 7-6. We're waiting the extra point. Delgado will attempt the PAT. Waiting on the extra point. Snap. Good snap. Gets it up. And it is good. New score. We're tied at 7. Florence Falcon football returns after this 30-second timeout.
[1:13:15] It's football time in Alabama. Our students are learning big American lessons. You can start with your God-given talents, and through practice, hard work, and sacrifice, you have the ability to become champions. This is Congressman Robert Adderholt. May God bless all of our students representing our high schools during this season, and may God bless the United States of America. I'm Robert Adderholt. Here at Austin High School, the Black Bears answer back to the Falcons touchdown drive, and it was impressive there, John McDaniel. Kevin, it was eight plays.
Kevin, it was eight plays, 60 yards, three minutes and 42 seconds that came off the clock, and, well, all that drive was Aiden Davis. 6'2", 220-pounder running back with some speed. He is special. It helps that he's got all that size up front to block. Delgado booted away. Looked like they were all sides, but no call. This one will be returnable. Mars has it at the one. Mars goes up to the left side looking for running rims. Split defender, but it's kicked down at the 16. Held on to the ball, though, and they'll bring up the Falcons at the 16-yard line first in 10.
Don't forget, the coach's breakfast Saturday morning from the North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic. As we talk to coaches from around the Shoals area about Friday night's games on Saturday morning. The coach's breakfast here on 93.9, the score from 8 a.m. to 9.30. 5.47 to go in the first. Tied at 7. And Florence will have two wideouts wide left, including Elliott and also Gouldsby. Wide to the right is Mars. Two backs in the backfield for the quarterback, Mahan. Trying to get the Black Bears to jump. They did not. Plenty of time on the play clock.
It's a four-man front now for this Black Bear team. A 4-4 look. Gets the snap. Going to go Johnson up the middle. Found a running rim. Push forward across the 20. And he'll get about four right there. Second down, and we'll call it six to go, maybe even five. Jeffrey Jones right now on the sideline. It looks like it's just going to be which team's defense can get a stop. Yeah, that's exactly what it's going to be. You know, they kind of ran it down our throats a little bit, like we expected with number nine.
Aiden, he's a good running back, just like last year. So, the defense is going to have to adjust after the first possession. But I think you're going to see a lot of run in this game. We and Boyle are now about 35 miles an hour in the second down play. This time, Johnson off the left side. Good block, but he couldn't get through. Spins forward. Only a game of about two. And bring up third and short. Third and about two to go. A long two at that.
Brought down at the front there by the Black Bears. We can't call all the names of the Black Bears, mainly because their numbers are in silver. But it's hard to do because we don't have all the things we can put out usually to help us out. That was Zach Oaks, the nose guard, coming in on the tackle off the left side. So, Florence will have third and two and a half to go. 4.35 to go here in the first, tied at seven. Under center now are the Falcons.
They'll put blank. Going to the right along with Boyle. Going to go off the left side. Hand it off. Johnson scoots up in there, and he's not going to get it. Oh, he broke loose, did he? Didn't get it still. Got right to it almost. He's going to be about a half yard short to the 24, and immediately Kenny Morrison quickly sends out the punt. He'll short by about a couple yards, actually. So, Austin's defense shuts it down. And interesting, Mike, that touchdown drive was all to the right side.
Those three plays were much to the left side. I wonder why the difference. Your guess is as good as mine, Kevin. Got to get a good snap. Got to get away. Ten on the line of scrimmage for Austin. High snap. Greenhawk gets it away, and that's a smart job. The kick will be short and taken at the 40-yard line there by Klotzbach. So, a short punt with the wind in the field position, and now you're just holding on for dear life here in the first quarter.
Tied at seven, and the wind does play a factor there. Wind played a factor right away. You know, yes, you kick the line drive to do the best you can, but you're driving it directly into the wind as the wind's gusting. A very difficult situation, and we ain't getting the friendly roll, you know. I think, Kevin, that you have to just try to just play it even when you have the wind against you and play for the quarter that you've got it by your back. That's going to be the key.
Neither team has put it in the air yet. Why should they know? Davis, the tailback, going to get the ball right up the middle. This time, trying to bounce outside, breaks a tackle to the 35, down to the 33. He is not just big. He's got a little shift in this about it. He had a little shimmy and a little shake there. He was definitely bouncing it to the outside, broke it down for a second, then kicked it back out. Really got the defense on their heels. Second down and three to go after the seven-yard gain at the 33.
[1:18:19] Tied at seven with 3.18 to go, but also trying to take their first lead if they can. Two to the left, one back in the backfield. It's Aiden Davis for Jarman going to the left side, cuts it back, and there's Martinez, but he couldn't get him. He couldn't get him forward, and a host of Falcons will bring him down around the place where he had the first down, and they still couldn't bring him down. And it'll be enough to move the chains at the 27-yard line. And that shows how elusive he is because Lawrence had a chance to put him down, but it takes two or three at one time.
Yeah, it's definitely a gang tackle in season. You cannot take this guy down with just that initial hit for sure. First and 10 at the 27. Jarman has one wide receiver right, one to the left on this first and 10 play. Again, Davis off the right side trying to cut it up. This time looking. Lawrence has got him bottled up that time and holding down for a gain of about one. And that's the best play we've seen on defense against Davis right there. But they played their lanes, John.
You talked about that. That is exactly right, Kevin. That's what I was going to say is they set the wall. Everybody was in a gap. They used the defender to kind of plug it, and they just bounced him and forced him to finally cut it up where everybody was. That's how you're going to have to play him because he is too good to just try to solo tackle all night. Second down and nine. Again, Davis is going to get it up the middle, trying to break it.
Pretty good job of the Falcons right there to trip him up around the 23-yard line. Jeffrey Jones gave him about three. But that Falcon defense now is starting to hold a little tighter. Yeah, it looks like they're getting the edge on him a little bit. And, you know, it's kind of interesting. We've had two players that have been giving the ball. Dave Hawley had one play. Every single play they've ran, it's been a handoff to Aiden Davis. I think Davis is going to get it again on third and sixth even, probably four-down territory.
Going to go right side with Davis. He's got a wall pushing forward. He got the first down, I think, across the 20-yard line, down to about the 17. It will be close to the mark. They're going to mark him about the 17-yard line. He may be about a half-yard short. J.J., you've got the best look at it. They're going to move the chains. First and 10 at the 17. And, Mike, you can see that wall of offensive line just push on the right side right there. Yeah, I mean, they're going behind their biggest fella.
He's got to be 300 pounds. He's just a big old body on the right side, but he's got two other guys pushing alongside him. Look at there. They pulled him out. Davis is out of the game now. Is that number eight? Number eight. That will be Gibbs. It will be back on the first of 10 play. Gibbs right up the middle looking nowhere to go. He's brought down immediately by Florence's nose guard, Jaden White, bringing up second down and nine. I think Davis may have run out of gas a little bit, just needed a breather.
Second down and nine. 45 seconds on the clock. Jeremy Perkins playing the clock now. A 7-7 game, tied at seven. Both teams have had two possessions. Florence scored on the first one. Austin scored on their first one. Florence had to punt. Now Austin trying to answer on the short field. Jarman, the quarterback, wants to pass to the side. Complete drop. Sales couldn't bring it in. It would have been around the 10-yard line. He'd have been short of the first down, but it brings up third and nine.
That was one of those situations. It looked like the footsteps got to him. He looked like he was preparing for the hit more than he was preparing for the catch there and, you know, was able to drop it. Good job by the Falcons to be in pursuit. Third down and nine down to go for the Black Bears. Here comes the Falcon crowd. We're in the stance right above them, and they're on their feet with cowbells ringing. Black Bears have to touch the seven-yard line. Back to pass.
Looking to throw the screen to Davis. Caught it at the 20 to the 10. Down to the nine. He's going to be short of about two yards. Nice set play right there. Got an excellent spot, though, Kevin. He's marked him all the way down to about the seven. Should be short by about a yard. He'll be fourth and one when we come back for the second quarter, as I think they will take that one down to zeros, and we will. Tied at seven after one. Florence and Austin, we're back in one minute.

James Moody with a score update. Muscle Shoals leading East Limestone 7-0. Wilson leads Rogers 7-0.
Lexington leading Tanner 14-0. Haleyville leads Winfield 7-0. Patton leading Curry 7-0. Bell Green leads Waterloo 7-0. Addison leads Red Bay 7-6. Sparkman leading Grissom 14-0. Back here at Austin High School. Tied at seven, but the Black Bears have it in deep in Falcon territory. They have it at the 18-yard line. They need to get to the 17 as they'll go to the other end of the field from where we're seated. And Mike Albertson right now, this Falcon defense has really been tested more than we've been tested all year in a while with a team that has just said, we're going to bow up and run the ball at you.
[1:23:50] This is definitely a run-heavy team, and we knew that going in. This front seven, I would say in our estimation, is probably one of the better front sevens that we've ever had here at Florence. So it's strength on strength right now. And this is going to be one of those games that I feel like it's going to be close to the bitter end. Davis is the tailback in the, well, we call it the pistol formation. Now he'll move to the right of the quarterback, Jarman. Going to leave it with Davis right up the middle.
He breaks the tackle and got the first down to the five. He'll move the chains, and it'll be first and goal at the four-yard line. And just no Falcons there to penetrate. And so they are really doing a good job with that offensive line. Donovan Jarman quickly to the line of scrimmage. It's Florence trying to substitute. Going to give it again to Davis, who bounced it in the middle. He's hit and brought down that time right at the four, coming in on the blitz. I believe that was Petty Poole who came in and made the play.
Now, check that Ward. They had a guy that was wide open on the outside and a wide receiver. You knew that they were going to run the ball, but the Falcons were readjusting and didn't get there in time. If they were able to audible that, that would be an easy six. Second down and goal at the, we'll call it the four-yard line. Maybe the three now. I think they've got him at the three. We'll be close to it. Left side are going to leave it with Davis trying to get outside, trying to break to the edge.
And he's hit down at the one. Flag on the play. That's going to be brought back for Holden. Falcon fans were screaming for it, and finally the white hat threw it. Well, they were trying to get around the edge, and our defender kept shooting towards the sideline. But you saw his jersey being pulled pretty easily. If they didn't call that, there should have been an investigation. 11.09 to go in the half. Lawrence tied at seven with Austin. But the Holden call was going to gate the three-yard run to the one, and they'll bring it back to around the 14.
Jeffrey Jones, I think they're going to mark it at the 13. Is that correct? Yes, that is correct. At the 13-yard line. Yes. Ball on the left hash going towards the field house here at Austin High School. Into the wind now are the Black Bears. They will have the wind in their face. So third down. Check it. Second down and goal at the 13. Falcons have three wide receivers out for the quarterback, Jarman. Jarman gets it to Davis. Got to the left side. Got space. And gets to the end zone touchdown.
He found space and found the pylon. And Black Bears answer again. And the left side continues to dominate here in the first half against Florence. And Austin leads 13-7. And Florence facing adversity for the first time in a while, Mike. Yes, they were, you know, Florence hasn't really been behind in too many games, especially this early on. But the Black Bears. You know, the Black Bears have taken it to him now, two drives in a row. It was definitely a statement drive there for the Black Bears.
Delgado to attempt the PAT. Snaps low, but he gets the kick up. And the kick is good. New score. Florence trails Austin now. 14-7. Falcon football returns in 30. Game day's coming. Florence trails 14-7. Let's go to our statistician, John McDaniel. Kevin, that was 11 plays, 40 yards total after the punt. Four minutes, 57 seconds, time of possession. Boy, not getting that first down, forcing the punt, and it gives the short field. And next thing you know, the Black Bears have it in good shape. Now, you've got to be careful fielding punts here.
Delgado to punt it away or kick it away. Boots the kick. It's going to be a weird kick taken by, good job by Haddock, who fair catches it at the 31. That's a tough kick to catch in that wind, Mike. He did a good job. Yes, he definitely did. That kick had a little curvature to it as well, just by the way the guy kicked it. It hung up in the air for a second. He adjusted properly and just made sure that he secured the catch, took the knee right away.
I mean, if I'm Florence in any more, hopefully you don't have to return too many more kicks. But if you're doing that on this end, bring those guys up a whole lot closer. Oh, absolutely. First and 10 for the Falcons at the 32-yard line. Three wide receivers for quarterback Mahan in shotgun formation with one tailback. That's Johnson in the backfield with him against the three-man front. Johnson going to get it right up the middle and skips forward. Stays on his feet. Fumble the ball. Ball on the ground.
[1:28:54] Fought for it. And I believe the Black Bears have it, and they do. They're recovered at the 42-yard line. A disaster for Florence as the ball goes down. And Camarion Rapporto recovers the fumble as Johnson was trying to elude a couple of defenders. Yeah, it's a heartbreaker right there. You know, the Falcons really haven't turned the ball over too much this season. Being able to face this adversity early on, we're going to see how this defense responds. So the Black Bears will have it first and 10.
And they'll mark the ball at the 40, well, they still haven't marked it, 43-yard line. Irons and Lotz, the middle linebackers right now. Klotzbach on the outside along with Martinez. Three-man front for Florence. Davis up the middle trying to bounce it. Does again. Hit hard right at the 40-yard line. Great play right there by Des Brown who clipped him out. He only gained two. He could have kept running if it wouldn't have been for Des Brown there. Des Brown with a nice open field tackle there. It was one-on-one.
He was able to make sure that he clipped Davis just enough to get him down, which a one-on-one situation with him is not easy to do. It's a great job by Des there. Sales will come wide to the right along with Jones. Wide to the left. Well, they won't have anyone. They'll just have the tight end on the left. Shotgun formation. Jarman going to give it to Davis off the right side. Good job by Florence stretching him out. He goes nowhere. And Irons brings him down.
No game. May have even lost a yard or two. Matter of fact, he lost about three yards. All the way back to the original line of scrimmage. Brings up a third and ten. That was a great job by the Falcons to really respond on first and second down here after that turnover. That's big. Now this third down play is going to be huge. You know they ran the screen pass earlier. Draw a player screen pass here. I would not be surprised. Going into the win. I wouldn't expect him to throw it deep here.
Play clock at 17. 9.25 and counting. Austin leads it 14-7. And after the fumble recovery, you have it in Falcon territory, but they face third and ten. Eight on the play clock. Jarman, the quarterback shot. Good formation. That's three wide receivers left. And the ball is snapped. He didn't know it. And they had to fall on it. And Davis is going to pick it up. They've got to keep him in front of them. Davis in trouble. He's going to die out at the 48. So miscommunication will bring up fourth down.
And the Black Bears will have to punt it away. Big break for Florence there. That was a big break for Florence right there. You know, the quarterback turned his head away to say something to the running back just to make sure that they were on the same page. And clearly the center wasn't on the same page because it hit off the quarterback's chest. And, you know, Davis tried to make something out of nothing but still lost two. Black Bears just now getting everybody to sit. They have one wide left, one wide right.
Florence is a man short. Make sure they've got the right number out there. And they do. Good snap. Gets it up and punched it away. High and hanging kick. Goolsby says get away. Let it get away. And the ball will bounce. And it's a good bounce there. Inside to 20. All the way down to 17. And Delgado had a great kick right there. End of the win. That was pretty impressive. Yeah, it was impressive. However, you know, that ball died and hit the turf and then skipped forward.
I think, you know, it was equal parts. It's one of those situations that if, honestly, on this side of the field, I don't return any kick whatsoever. I tell everybody to stay at the line of scrimmage because there's only too many. It's only going to be friendly fire. The blockers are going to blind up kicking that ball. Johnson will return at tailback. One tailback. To the left will be Goolsby and Elliott. Wide right will be green with the wind behind their back. First and ten play.
Mahan's going to leave it with Johnson. No, before that, a whistle and somebody moved early. Offsides on the defense. So, five yards would go the other way would be big. Falcon says it's against the Orange and they're marking it that way. So, we'll take the five yards and bring up first and five. And Florence is going to pass the ball there. First down and five to go. Eight-sixteen to go in the half. Florence trails at 14-7. We knew it to be tough to come to Austin.
7-0 Falcons getting a battle tonight. Mahan looks over the defense. Going to leave it with Johnson off the left side. Trying to split the defense. Gets across to the 25. Hit hard at the 26. And, again, a whistle on this one. Or, they're going to say a flag against Florence, maybe. Could be holding on the left side this time. Yeah, it's definitely in the area of holding. Johnson will check out. Williams will check in. And, the holding call will negate the run. So, you get five yards. You give ten back.
From the 23, it will mark it back to about the 12-yard line. Well, depending on where he marked it from. And, these officials put it down at the 13. So, Florence will have it first down now in about 14 to go. Down by seven. 14 to seven. Two wide outs right. Gouldsby and Elliott out there. Wide left is green. On the second out, 14 play. The tailback is Kayon Williams. Against a four-man front. In motion is Williams to the right. Looks to pass is Mahan. Has time. Across the middle. Complete.
[1:34:32] Got it throughout the 20-yard line. Nice throwing catch to Elliott. He catches it. Scoots forward. A game of about nine or ten right there. Does a great job there by Mahan. Pre-snap to be able to direct his guys. It looked like there was a little confusion. He straightened some things out. Elliott came across the middle there. And then Causton hit him beautifully in stride. Second down and seven for the Falcons. Going right to left as you listen to this. Ball at around the 20-yard line. Williams going to get it up the middle.
Nope. Going to throw. Complete on the side as he faked me out in Mahan. And a catch is made. And it's going to be close enough to move the chains. And I think it will be. As Jackson Mayes will bring it in. And that will be enough for a Falcon first down. And a nice throw there from Mahan to Jackson Mayes. Jackson Mayes has become one of the better targets here for Mahan. It looked like Mayes took a helmet to the knee there. He's looking pretty.
And he'll go down. They're going to check on him. They're going to check on him. We'll do the same. Florence, trails 14-7. Falcon football back in 30 seconds. Getting the kids to practice on time. Remembering if it's your day to bring snacks. Making it to the game with a clean jersey. Why are simple things sometimes so complicated? Thankfully, with auto owners, insurance doesn't have to be one of them. Auto Owners works with independent agents who answer when you call. So you can worry about more important things.
Like whether your kid is going to run toward first or third base. That's simple human sense. In Florence, call Tyson Johnson, Luke Brown, Kirby Allen, Victoria Devaney, Brant Bishop, or Daniel Box with Hineker Johnson and Layton Insurance Agency. 256-764-8682. Ties to a Florence football. They handed off to Williams up the middle. He's hit hard around the 30-yard line and pushed back after a gain of about four or five. They still blowing the whistle. And finally, after they let go of him there. And the Falcons will have to get someone to come in right now.
Looks like Blank had an issue. He was tapping his helmet as he was coming off. So Blank will come out. And Florence will bring Kevontae Green in. We'll go through a three-wide receiver set. The Falcons have had a few nicks and injuries here in the first half already. An injured team. Shot good formation. Under six to go. Florence facing second down and six at the 32-yard line. Mahan going to give it to Williams. No, going to roll the pass. Looking. Hank can run it. Takes off.
He's got it. To the 40-yard line. And he lowers his head and runs over a black bear. And that's enough to move the chain. That's something we haven't seen from Mahan so far. That's something that we have not seen thus far. And Costa did a great job with the play fake there. But being able to see that he had the green grass upfield. It just was very steadfast in his decision-making process to take it upfield and get the first down. First and 10 at the 41. Florence down by seven, though, here in the first half with 528 to go in the first half.
For an underclassman quarterback, you like the one read. He's got one defender he's reading. Once he does, quick decision, pull ball, go upfield. Kayon Williams to the tailback with Mahan in shotgun formation. This time going to leave it with Williams off the right side. Boy, he's hit immediately with the line of scrimmage. He pushes forward. He gets two or three. Up to the 45. Give him a gain of four. But that was Kayon Williams right there. He pushed the pile. Yeah, Kayon Williams, he hit the gap.
He was met with a linebacker. Spun off that a little bit. Kept his legs going. And was able to fall forward for about a day. It was closer to a five-yard game. Landon Baker, you know, the tackle on your right. They do mark him all the way up to the 45-yard line near the 46. Johnson will replace Williams on this second down play. Two wideouts left, one to the right against a four-man front. Everybody within eight yards of the line of scrimmage for Austin. Going to leave it with Johnson off the left side.
Found a Brenner in 50-45. Closed line, lost the ball, fumbled again, recovered by Austin. They got him around the neck. He lost the ball. And it's recovered by the Black Bears at the 38-yard line. He was a step away from taking it to the house. But two fumbles now have cost the Falcons, and the Black Bears have it again. Yeah, he got hit up high. And I wasn't watching where the ball was at that time. But once the ball hit the turf, he was kind of spun around.
He's very upset with himself. And I totally understand that. But this Falcon team is a team sport here. And this is a time for the defense to step up. J.C. Gulesman goes over and passes him on the head and says, Buddy, we know who you are. Let's go. Now can the Falcon defense hold here? 4-27 to go. Both teams have three timeouts here in the first half still. Davis is the tailback behind Jarman. Going to go off the left side with Davis, trying to get outside.
Falcons reach. Can't push him there but push him out of bounds around the 40-yard line. He's actually at the line of scrimmage. He won't get any gain. That's a pretty good job of stringing it out. John McDaniel, that's what you've got to do with this kid. You've just got to string him out. Don't let him get going north and south. You're 100%, Kevin. That's how you want to play the zone downhill. He's looking for a gap. You want to make a picket fence and have to keep bouncing further and further outside because that gives more time for defenders to get there.
[1:39:50] Bursky, by the way, back in the game with irons in the middle linebackers. Three wide outs for the quarterback Jarman on second down and 10. Looks to pass. Steps across the middle. Man's out there and he ended up through it incomplete. He was going for his tight end, but he underthrew him. Thank goodness because he had had enough for the first down. But it brings up third and called it 11 to go. Yeah, right away you saw the Falcon defense was in pursuit. And the quarterback definitely sped up his throw to try and get it to that tight end that was running the seam down the middle.
You've got to think here on third and 11, they're thinking screens or draws. I would be getting the ball in Davis' hand. Here comes the Falcon crowd to their feet. Trying to employ this Falcon defense to get a stop with 4.20 to go in the first half. Trailing it by seven, Florence for the first time in a while. Driving the quarterback. Going to leave it with Davis off the right side. Trying to stretch him out there. And he breaks through the 45, first down to the 50 and steps out of bounds.
Got 14 on the carry. But a flag on the play all the way back here. It is a hold. And it's coming back. Kenny Marson says, thank you very much. We'll point it that way. I thought it was a hold here, but I didn't see the flag. I'll be honest with you, the only official I've seen throw a flag on hold in has been the white hat. But we'll take it. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. It's a lot of weather. It affects the player, but it affects the officials too.
JJ may not be with me right now, so I'll stick with him. There he is. Sorry. I don't want to get a first down to ball number 28. If you're Florence, don't be too aggressive. Play smart here. Yeah, well, this is prime screen pass opportunity. John. They're going to snap it, give it to Davis up the middle, and he goes nowhere. The Falcons push it back, and that'll be where it's at. They were confused on that one, Kevin. And now punting into the wind. And if you're goose, but he'll stand at the 45.
I'm with Mike. Don't catch it unless you're absolutely sure. And I wouldn't even block for him. I'll block at the line of scrimmage. Don't block anymore. Oh, I'd go after the punter. They've had trouble with snouts. I'm with Kevin. Go after the punter here. They've snapped it over his head a few times almost. Good snap this time. They do come after it, but he gets rid of it just barely. It'll be a line drive kick, and it's slow, and it bounces backwards, and it's going to be out midfield.
Florence will have great field position. 52 yards away with 257 to go in the half, and a chance to go down and maybe tie it up. Trailing 14 to 7 in what has obviously been a tough football game. And as Mike, as we've talked about, all the elements and everything about this played in the Austin's factor, but the factors are right here in it and got a chance to tie it up. Absolutely. You know, we can talk about not having school and being at a routine and all that other stuff, but, you know, all that stuff goes out the window once we're snapping the ball and we're playing.
There's 257 left in this half, and we've got an opportunity to tie this up before we go. Under center, Mahan. Play action. Wants to throw. Goes deep for Goolsby. Down the left side of the hand-checking all the way. There's a flag. Goolsby was being held. And Coach Caden McGuire runs all the way down to the 20-yard line and says, thank you very much. Therefore, running, Goolsby had a step on him. He had to give it up. Austin has had 10, 11 guys all within 10 or 5 yards of the line of scrimmage almost.
Yeah, you've got to be able to stretch it out, especially on this side of the field. I think it was a great play call to start off this drive to really make a hit after being able to get that possession back. Good play call there. Down at the 37. 2.50 to go. Clock should be a factor. Kevin, I believe this is how Austin has played us in the past several games. They've played really, really eight, nine men within five yards. And they jump off sides and they give us five more.
So that's 20 yards. Did anybody blow the whistle? Yeah, I think the official did. Well, the one official has the ball in his hands. I don't see a flag on the ground. He's ready to mark it off. Yeah, yeah. That's all that matters. Kenny Morrison right here with the official on the side said, hey, they jumped and hit our guy. He's like shaking his head and said, you've got to throw a flag on that. The back judge was the only one that saw that. Yeah, so first and five at the 32.
[1:44:52] Coach Morrison getting into conversation still. Two wideouts right. Goes to the left. Gets a seven-man front. Johnson off the left side. Oh, lost the ball again. And fumbled and recovered by the Black Bears. That time the exchange was not good and the Black Bears get it. Just not been as nice so far in the first half. And the Black Bears get it back at the 34. Disaster for Florence early on. Sometimes there's no words, Kevin. That was a tough one. You know, he's really carried us thus far this way.
You know, when guys were out, just an unfortunate situation for him to put the ball on the turf again. So at the 34, the Black Bears will have it with 247 to go. And the Falcons are only down by seven. They've turned it over three times. In opposing team's territory also. Uncharacteristic. This time they have it at the 34-yard line through the Black Bears. They have 56 yards to go. 66 to go. And Davis has it up the middle. Danson gets hit by Martinez, but he gets about four. But a flag on the play.
And again, Holden called. It's been happening a good bit. They're on the left side. When Jaden White's pads are turned on him and he's pushed to the side. Yeah, you're not manhandling Jaden White like that unless there's some leverage issue. Can you blame him, though? Well, I certainly don't blame anybody, but a penalty's a penalty. The center for Austin has had a difficult time, to say the least. So, to push it back and set up a first and 10, it'll be first and 20. And you can see Jaden White's not 100%.
He's definitely hobbled. He's been favoring one of his lower extremities. Kenny Morrison also keeping an eye on the play clock. I think that play clock has gone to the wrong time a few times. The clock will stay starting here. They're going to give it to Davis off the left side. Looking up the middle, and he's brought down at the 27. Good job of the Falcon defense. Burski in on the tackle. And timeout taken with 2.35 to go in the first half. Austin leads Florence 14-7. We're back in 30.

Florence has fumbled it away three times in trail Austin 14-7 with the Black Bears face second down and about 20 to go. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. This running back, Davis, is everything and then some. Yeah, it's no surprise. You know, when we started doing film study on these guys earlier in the week, I had memories of last year. You know, he ran up and down the field on this last year. And, you know, we've kind of figured him out a little bit. But it's just seeing this kid up close, he's one of the strongest kids I've seen at running back this year.
And that's coming from our running back room, which is very good. Second down, about 20 to go. Going to leave with Davis up the middle, bouncing, skipping, hit, brought down from behind. Burski pushing down around the 30. And again, timeout taken by Florence. But wait, is there a flag there? And no. No, just pushing around. They're trying to get something stirred up there. There was somebody threw something behind an official. It looked like a flag for a second. We'll keep it right here on this with 226 to go at the half.
Hope to have the baseball coach, Hunter Morris, here to be with us as our guest. Looking forward to that. Plus, hear from golf coach Parker Driggers on a recorded interview we had earlier this week. Don't forget, Alabama football. The Crimson Tide in Tennessee will play tomorrow up in Knoxville, I believe that is. That is a 2.30 kickoff. 11.30, you'll hear pregame starting here on 93.9. The score is the Crimson Tide. Puts on the white jerseys and takes on the guys in orange up in Knoxville. Should be a fun matchup.
Mike, if you're Florence here, it's third and 14. First of all, you've got to get a stop. And second, you can't do any stupid penalties here. I don't know. I mean, it's got to be all discipline from here on out. You can't give a team the ball three. You can't give them three extra possessions and expect to continue to play undisciplined ball. So, it's time to buckle down and clean some things up. No hitches and goes. BBs, nothing gets behind you. You'd rather be late to the ball than early.
14 yards to go for Austin from their own 30. Back to pass. Quarterback draw up the middle. Going back to the left. And he's hit and brought down at the 34. And Kenny Marshall will use his last timeout with 2.19 to go. And Florence will have a chance to possibly get the ball and go down and try to get some points maybe before here at the half, trailing 14 to 7. You're listening to Falcon Football. We're back in 30. At First Southern Bank, we always cheer for the home team. We are homegrown with deep roots.

We always root for the home team because we are the home team. First Southern Bank. Equal housing lender. Member FDIC. Back here at Austin High School where the Falcons are in a battle, trailing 14 to 7 to Austin here with 2.19 to go in the half.
The Black Bears are about to punt it away from their own 34-yard line. Delgado got away a good punt earlier. The Falcons have just got to take care of the football. Three turnovers from Florence in the first half have kept Austin in the lead. Falcons have nine on the line of scrimmage. A good snap. Almost got it and it hit the punter. Didn't get it. Hit the punter. Short punt with the 50, but it's going to be a first down for the Black Bears as we rough the punter there.
We went for it and didn't get it. We sold out, gave away all our timeouts to try and get this possession back, and we just absolutely crushed the punter there. That's the type of stuff that will come back to bite you, especially on the road. And it was the right call. Kenny Morrison was begging for five yards, but it was definitely a roughing the punter. If they could have given him 20 yards, I would have said it was okay. So going for the block kick did not pay off there, and now you've got to play defense for 213 with no timeouts, and the Black Bears with a chance to score from midfield and a chance to have the ball back to start the third quarter.
This is a huge, huge time for Florence right here. Boy, they need to get a stop. Oh, that was a big penalty all because of that. And I think you're going to get a dose of number nine for the next few plays with three timeouts for the Black Bears. This just has points written all over it. Charming the quarterback from midfield. Going to leave it with Davis. He's going to have the counter back to the left side. Has runner in. 45 to the 40. Runs over a Falcon defender and gets down to the 36-yard line.
The 6'2", 220 train got going forward. And the 14 yards will move the chains. With 207 to go, and the first time we've seen the counter, and it worked right there. His Falcon defense on their heels a little bit and have been on the field way too much in the first half. We talked about time of possession. It definitely favors Austin. This time to the left side, trying to cut, looking, nowhere to go, hit, broke a tackle, got back to the line of scrimmage. Florence stops in there for a gain of about two or three.
And a timeout taken, I believe, by the Black Bears. Let's see. With the clock stopped, no, the clock didn't stop. There's a whole bunch of extra whistles for her. Austin's sideline is right on top of the official over there. We've been told to get back behind the white line ten times over here. But they'll run the ball left all day. Had to put in a new running back here as Davis got a little injured there, maybe shook up. We'll run it with the tailback this time up the middle.
Found a running rim across the 35 to the 33. Gain of about three or four. Brings up third down and short. That was Gibbs. And now a whistle and a timeout taken by the Black Bears with 1.03 to go in the first half. Timeout on the field. Florence down 14-7. Black Bears driving. We're back in 30. Thanks for choosing Whataburger. What can I get started for you? At Whataburger, each meal is made to order, so you can always get exactly what you crave. If that's a Whataburger, what a meal, you got it.
But if you're in the mood for something a little more you, like a Whataburger with grilled onions, crispy bacon, and creamy pepper sauce, go for it. March to the beat of your own drum. Bite into the beef of your own Whataburger creation. Whataburger, just like you like it. 106 to go in the half. And not good news for undefeated Florence. 7-0 in the season. They've run into a juggernaut of Austin tonight. Leading at 14-7. The Black Bears knocking on the door. Florence has helped them, though, with three turnovers.
And not played well. The wind has played a factor. Short field. Gave Austin a 40-yard field to score. To take that one-touchdown lead, and they're knocking on the door. They are going against the wind now. I think Gibbs is still in the game at tailback now for Jarman. Third and three. Jarman going to lead with Gibbs off the right side, trying to get outside, using speed. Got to the 26th. It may have done enough for the first down. Jeffrey Jones is close. JJ is close. Yeah, he got it.
[1:55:26] Waiting to make a measurement there. Morrison says it is short, but I don't know. It's going to be fourth down, I think. It's going to be. They're going to have to. 53 seconds left in the first half. Florence. We'll see a measurement happen here. The ball just at the 26-yard line. The wind blowing, gusting into the faces of the Black Bears as the light rain starts to fall. Again, PA announcer said it's short by about four inches. He has better connection than we do. Davis' orange sneakers that you can see standing out are back in that huddle.
I guarantee you, he's back in the game. My guess is we're going to see Davis right here. Boy, if you're Florence. John, would you go under a run blitz here? Maybe try to just come in and try to shake things up? I would definitely bring in five or six defensive linemen to play heavy. Maybe even a bare front where everybody's covered and then bring your extra linebackers in. They're going to go heavy. Well, they've got two wide receivers. They're going to go heavy with Davis running quarterback and Gibbs now running tailback.
So they're really heavy with the wind brisky. Davis there quarterback. I think he'll run up and run a quarterback sneak here. Let's see what they do. That was a benefit to a terrible call, in my opinion, on Austin. A guy that's not used to taking snaps back there on a fourth down play, you don't give him the ball. I never liked shotgun for four inches. And he's not your quarterback that takes that snap. It's not a natural thing for a guy that doesn't have those reps.
With no timeouts, Florence will come out and go four wide, empty set, five wide, empty set. Surprised they're doing that with the wind, but they are. May hand the quarterback. If you're going to throw it, throw it deep. Straight drop. That'll be a nut to move the chase again. That was a great, heavy job by Costin. Haddock was wide open. He just wanted to get him the ball there, hit him right in the numbers. Haddock did the rest. Empty set again with 23 seconds to go. Watch for Jackson Mays here.
Straight drop. Looks right. Throws it across the middle. Complete at the five. Not down there at the five-yard line. Got to hurry up. Got to come up there as they throw him down. Ball will be at the five. Got to hurry. Can't argue right here. Got to hurry up. That's a problem. Ten yard. Ten on the clock. Now nine. Now eight. Now we've got a flag on the play, Kevin. Flag on the play with 8.5. And let's see what it's for. Should be plenty on that one.
8.5. You've got to be ready. No matter what, when the whistle blows, you're going to have to get ready to snap it. And if you're Florence, you're going to have to throw it to the end zone, no matter if it's against Florence or if it's against Austin. The flag is out of the seven-yard line, and it looks like it's going to be marched against Florence. Dead ball. That's sportsman-like conduct against Florence. What it was, they were trying to take the ball away from the wide receiver. He was trying to get the ball back to the official, and he threw it hard to the official, and the referee threw a flag on him.
Well, there was more to that play. The wide receiver that caught it was also tossed to the ground, and he jumped up and he yelled at the official because that was a penalty after the play. At the 22-yard line, Florence will have to snap it as soon as they blow the whistle. They've got to throw it to the end zone here, or to the sideline of one. You can't get caught inbounds with no timeouts. Mahan's got to be smart with that. Now, officials are still gathering to talk.
It says third down for Florence. Well, it was after the play, so that does make sense. Should be second down, and they'll move it back to second down, I believe. With 8.5 on the clock, no timeouts. You've got to throw a Hail Mary here and see if you can get something in the end zone. Blitz coming. Got to pick him up. Good block. Mahan throws it to the end zone. Has a man out there. Touchdown. Gulesby brings it in. That's a clock hit zero. What a… In celebration, he spiked the ball, and of course, it's always the second person.
[2:00:32] We now are being assessed a personal foul penalty. That could be a 15-yarder. That would make this extra point a lot more hard, more difficult. Let's see what the call is. Goalsby on the reception, but it is going against Florence. This is the type stuff, though, that you're always going to get whistled on the road. You know, and being able to keep your head cool. We talked about this pregame. This is one of those situations where, you know, this one's going to hurt a little bit.
30-yard extra point attempt coming for Mahan. Or excuse me, for Greenhall as Mahan holds to try to tie it up here at the half. Down 14-13. But, boy, what a battle back there. And what a job of Mahan to lead the team down. And Goalsby with great catches on both of those plays. Mahan and Goalsby carried the Florence Falcons on this drive. Just great plays all around. They're going to mark it back at the 18. So, it will be now a 35-yard extra point to tie it up.
You know what, guys? We don't have a speedster on the end. It would be a great place to fake one right here. And timeout being taken, maybe? Let's see. What are we doing? Seven-man crew now comes up and says something else. I'm not sure what it is. They're going to mark it back up. They're going to assess it on the kick. Next half. So, the touchdown counts. And now they're going to put it back. And maybe they're going to assess the second half. The White Hat's over here with Kenny Marson.
We're having a discussion. But I think you may be right, Mike. They're definitely going to do that. And I wonder if the coach, knowing how critical field position is. So, the coach has options. He can assess it on the extra point or the field goal. I mean, or after halftime. Okay. First, he said field goal, so we backed him up. Then he said he wanted it after halftime. So, now we've got to pull him back up. Jeffrey Jones getting that from the official underneath the goalpost.
We can't snap it yet, because the White Hat's still over here with the official, but Kenny Marson. Did y'all hear that? Yes, we did. Great job, JJ. I think Kenny Marson disagrees, though. So, if, but he already called it. It's like saying on the coin toss. No? So, here's the extra point. It's going to be a 20-yard extra point. We'll wrap it all up. But here we go. Got to make the extra point here. Good snap. Good hold. Extra point on the way. Oh! It's good.
It's good. It's good. It's good. Just barely. Hooked it into the left, up, right. And Florence has tied it up at 14 at the half. And listen to the Falcon crowd on their feet. Brothers picking up brothers for Florence. And Mahan getting a lot of claps on the back of the helmet there from his teammates there. As Florence ties it up on the last play of the half, 14-14. Now back to the stadium for the halftime show. Here at Austin High School, Florence with a flurry at the end.
After being down 14-7 for much of the second quarter. Take it down in about 70 yards in about four plays. Controversy everywhere, but they throw a pass and score it right at the end of the half. As they hit zeroes, as Mahan hits Goolsby. And we're tied at 14 as the Falcons have fought back to tie this up. And it's going to be a tough second half. So hang on, Falcon fans. We're going to need everyone pulling for us here in the second half. We're joined now for the TNT fireworks halftime show with a new coach here at Florence High School.
Coach Hunter Morris, the head baseball coach for the Falcons. Coach, welcome aboard. I appreciate you guys having me. I'm excited to be here. I mean, it's pretty fun to come and be a part of a great program, being part of a Florence High School. But also, when you come into the program and you see the football team come out and have a great start to the season, that starts to build like, hey, there's some energy here in the school. You know, and all the credit in the world to Coach Morrison and then certainly to Coach Miles and Coach Bowens that have really gotten this machine in motion right from the start.
And we've got a ton of other sports within the athletics department that are really performing well, top in the state. You know, shout out to all of them. And, you know, hopefully we can carry that momentum through not just the spring, but for years to come. Well, baseball is a sport. I mean, it feels like baseball weather tonight, doesn't it? This wind and this cold coming in sort of feels like a high school baseball game should be played, right? It does. And, you know, 65 is going to feel a lot different in February and March than it does today.
But, yeah, this feels like baseball weather. So, I'm excited. Let's talk about your career. You went to Auburn University. You're a big player at Auburn. You were SEC Player of the Year back in 2010 as well. And, of course, you got to go to the leagues as well. A great career for you. That was a lot of fun. But has that helped shape you a lot as who you are as a coach? It has. You know, I've been so fortunate throughout all the experiences I've had in baseball as a player, as a coach, you know, all the way up to the SEC level.
And, you know, just little things. I knew I wanted to be a coach my whole life whenever I was done playing. And so, for me, it was taking little tidbits of everything that I liked or didn't like about every coach that I played for and just trying to mold that into the best version of who would I want to play for, who would make me go, who would make me want to run through that brick wall, who did I know who had my back, those kind of things, and helped me develop.
And, you know, so I've been around a lot of great ones. I've been very blessed. And hopefully can carry that over to our program here at Florence. Well, let's talk about your team. As we talk with Hunter Marsh, the head coach for the baseball team at Florence High School, your baseball team's got some strengths coming back, especially on the mound. Yeah. We've got a chance to be really special on the mound for sure. We've got, you know, some depth coming back from last year. I know Remy Montgomery had, you know, the finger issue last year, and he wasn't quite himself.
He's looked great this fall. You know, you've got Klotzbach. You've got Britton Klontz. You've got Kirkland Blank. You know, some guys that, you know, kind of profile as relievers. And then you've got arguably two of the best 29 sophomores in the state, right-handed pitchers in that class that, you know, I think the depth is there. And then you look across, even in the field and offensively, you know, there are no holes. I haven't seen a lot of these guys in person on the field at game time.
But from everything that I've been told, from what I've, you know, studied and seen in the program, you know, I just, I think it's a really complete team. And that's exciting to be a part of. By the way, those sophomores are playing football right now. Costin Mayen had the big touchdown pass. Tripp Morris, who's had some big plays as well, the catch on that drive as well. Your son there, he's going to be a sophomore. That's a pitcher, so two really good pitchers go with the rest of that staff.
[2:11:08] It's going to be fun to see. So, you know, people can be involved, though, in helping out with Florence Baseball because it takes a lot of different things happening. There's a way they can donate, help out. So anytime they want to contact you, they can just contact the school, I'm sure, and find out how to help out, right? Absolutely. Reach out to the school. Reach out to our athletics department. Coach Miles has done an incredible job helping with fundraising. You know, I've got a tremendous booster club.
So all it takes is just one phone call to get in touch with me and find out how you can help. And, you know, keep this thing just rolling in the right direction. All right. We've got October baseball going on right now. And we understand the AL is still, I think, delayed today. It may not even get the game in with Cleveland and Tampa Bay. But on the other side, how about those Milwaukee Brewers? Pretty impressive. You know, I couldn't believe it. I actually turned the game off last night when it got to 4-0 and, you know, started working on some other things around the house and then turned it back on right as it had ended.
You know, I was in the Brewers organization for six years. So, you know, kind of that rebuilding stage. And then they finally started to click these last couple years. Winning 103 games in the regular season this year was incredible. And so I've still got a handful of friends. At my age, now it's more on the coaching staff than it is the players. But, you know, some of those guys, some of the coaches I played, I was fortunate enough to play for in the minor leagues. And some of the players even, you know, we were teammates coming up.
And so thrilled to death for them. I think that, you know, they just, they got a great opportunity here with some extra days of rest versus what the AL is going to have. And I think the matchup is incredible for them. Well, Coach, we're excited about the baseball season coming up around the corner. You'll be here before you know it. We look forward to it. We can't wait to see it and come out to support your team. And it should be a great, fun season. And let's see if we can get this Falcons football team to eat no to not, okay?
Let's get there. That'll be good. Coach Hunter Mars, the baseball coach for Florence High School. I'm joined now by the head coach of the Florence golf team, Coach Parker Driggers. And Coach, new position. Are you excited about being a part of the golf team? Yeah, I'm excited. It's something I've wanted to do since getting to Florence. And I'm just blessed for the opportunity to finally get to do it and take control of the golf team and, you know, be out there with the guys. So, I'm excited. We know that you played football, obviously, at Division I level. When you were in high school, were you a golfer in high school?
Is that something that was on your bucket list? Yeah, I played in high school. We actually got a golf team my junior year of high school. And so, I was able to start playing my junior year. Played a little bit growing up. Then through college, continued to play outside of football and just love the mental side of the game. Love playing it. Love being out there. So, yeah. I mean, I love the game. Love being around it. Love everything about it. Let's talk about your golf team coming up.
What do you expect from them? And when does the season start? So, we'll start practicing in January. You know, we can start having tournaments late February into March and through April and into May. You know, I've gotten a chance to meet the team a couple times. Excited. We've got Aiden Thick Penn, a senior. He's our stud. Excited about him, what he's going to bring and see if we can go, you know, chase a ring down and just be the best we can be as a group.
I know as we speak with Parker Driggers, the head golf coach at Florence High School, one of the things that we have a lot of golfers that listen that are always playing, but they can help out with the golf program at Florence High School. That would be a great thing for them to donate and help as well. Right. You know, we're a little late into it, but going into next year, you know, I'd love to host a tournament for local golfers to come and, you know, sponsorship and everything.
Just be a part of it. Come pour into the guys. Come see what we have and, you know, grow the program. That's what it's about, growing the program and making it better than, you know, how you found it. Best of luck, okay. Thank you. Coach Parker Driggers, the head golf coach at Florence High School. Back at Austin High School at the half on the TNT Fireworks Halftime Show.
Florence and Austin tied at 14. Kevin Johnson, Mike Albertson, Jeffrey Jones, John McDaniel with us. And we're going to go for our Chick-fil-A stats at half. John McDaniel, I'll let you take it away. All right, Kevin. Thank you very much. We'll start with the home team, the Austin Black Bears. First half, they have 135 yards of total offense. Have 128 yards rushing on 30 carries. One for three passing for a grand total of seven yards. First downs, they have nine. One for seven on third down conversions. Two for three on fourth down conversions.
Seven penalties for 60 yards in the half. One turnover. Two for two on their PAT attempts. Time of possession is 14 minutes, 35 seconds. Aiden Davis already in the half. He has 19 carries for 107 yards and, of course, two touchdowns. The Falcons in the half, 225 yards of offense. We have 126 yards rushing on 16 carries. 99 yards passing. Six for six completions and attempts. Nine first downs in the half. Nine for one on third down conversions and no fourth down attempts. Three penalties for 41 yards in the half. Of course, the big three turnovers.
Also, two for two on our PAT attempts. And our time of possession, nine minutes, 17 seconds. Back to you, KJ. Yeah, the time of possession, not as much as I thought, but it still favors Austin in a couple of possessions there. And, Mike, if you tell Kenny Marson at the half, hey, your team has fumbled it and lost it three times and you're still tied at 14 at the half, you've got to say, okay, if we can come out of that and be tied at 14, that's pretty amazing.
It is pretty amazing. However, you know, this is not the type game that you're going to want to give away three turnovers and everything. So, all that being said, they better clean it up in the second half because they're not going to get away with that again. That was a gift to be able to come away 14-14 there, and now the execution needs to be solid. We're playing for a region championship here. This is not, that can't continue if we expect to win. Well, we had Hunter Marsh, the baseball coach for Florence High School, did a great job with us at the half.
They are guests, and, Mike, if I'm honest about it, it's not easy to close out in the ninth inning, and it's not easy to close out for a region championship either. No, it definitely isn't. You know, when the lights are the brightest and the real pressure is on, and you know what's at stake. I mean, it's really what you've worked for. At this point, you know, we've weathered that storm. We're continuing to face adversity. We're going to be on the road. It's going to be a battle from here on out.
But at this point, you've come through, and you've tied the game up. At the half, it's time to execute in the second half. My apologies. Didn't mean to interrupt you there. I was going to go down to Jeffrey Jones. JJ, are you inside the tent? To the left of you, KJ. Oh, I didn't see you down here. See you right here. There we go. There you go. I didn't know he's sliding in there, okay? I thought he might have been inside the tent there. Jeffrey, on the sideline, that last drive had to bring some energy to the Florence team.
Unbelievable, a lot of energy. I mean, first of all, I need to say this before the end of the broadcast. Remind me next week, if it's like this, to bring my Snuggie. I really miss that thing right now. I'm usually, on weather like this, that's where I usually am, under my Snuggie and a couple blankets. But, yeah, so the last drive was outstanding. You know, we saw a lot of maturity out of Calston. Goolsby got open twice and made miraculous catches. One of them was, the first one he caught, it looked like it was just slow motion.
And you're like, oh, yeah, and he caught it. So, outstanding job. You know, we're lucky. Right now, we're very lucky. We played the worst half of football we've played all year, by far. And we played a couple bad halves. I mean, I'll be honest with you. Decatur wasn't the prettiest game. Athens, we didn't play well in the first half. But we are tied up 14-14 against a very good Austin team. We're going to go in here. We've seen that running back. We know that he's going to get 75 carries in the second half.
So, we're just going to have to hit him. We're going to keep hitting him. You know, I think if we, they're going to run him. And if we just keep hitting him, keep hitting him, he's not going to wear us out. We're going to wear him out. That's what I'm thinking. We're going to wear him out. Because their second-string running back, Gibbs, is good. But he is no Aiden Davis. There's no doubt. And by the way, the kickoff will be 15-yard penalty against Florence. They'll have to kick it from the 25.
[2:21:57] And if they kick it into the wind, then that's going to make a factor, too. But Florence could have the wind in the fourth quarter, which also could be a factor. So, we'll keep it on that. Huge factor. Whoever has the wind in the fourth quarter has a definite advantage. I think it could be a huge factor as well. So, kicking game in this wind, all these things are going to be huge factors as well. Saturday, lots of college football coming up. Alabama and Tennessee, the big one up in Rocky Top.
Guys, I know you look at that game. I think, obviously, personally, I think Alabama wins and wins big against Tennessee. I don't think it will be close, and I think they are going to be licking their wounds and not happy. And Tennessee is catching them at the wrong time. But I'll go to Mike. Mike, what do you think about that one tomorrow up in Knoxville? Yeah, you know, there's plenty to think about. In Knoxville, Tennessee took Texas to the wire. So, you know, anything can happen up there.
It's on their home field, all that other stuff. But, you know, Saturday night in the SEC is always wild. So, I don't, you know, I think Alabama comes away, but I'm not predicting any crazy blowout or anything. John, what do you think? I think if both teams, I think everybody kind of recognize, both teams play their A game. Alabama's probably the better team. The thing no one knows is what Alabama team is going to show up. Do they let last week affect them? Do they come out lethargic?
Or do they come out on fire? That's a question that you don't know about this, Miss Bama team. They haven't had, of course, obviously the first adversity. And so, I want to see how they play. I would pick the tide, but I'm interested to see if they can go into that stadium and play well. J.J., what do you think? In this situation, I'd normally say Alabama by 100, but I'm going to say Alabama by 90. Yeah. Because I think that Bama fans, if you're heading up to Rocky Top, if you're in the cigar smoking thing, bring your cigars because that's apparently a weird tradition.
But you know it's weird. Yeah, toilet paper on a tree is not weird. Okay. Oh, man, that's just, that's sacred. Anyway, I'll take Alabama by 90. Alabama by 90. Okay, let's go. Hey, other games. By the way, I know Georgia will handle Auburn, I think, and I'm an Auburn fan. Not so fast, my friend. You think Auburn has a chance? No. Okay, thank you very much. Okay, I'll be honest. You know, one that catches my attention, Missouri goes to Ole Miss tomorrow. I really like Missouri. I think that's a tough game for Ole Miss at home against Missouri.
That's going to be a fun game to watch, Mike. It probably will be, actually. You know, Ole Miss, you know, they came out right away against LSU. They won that big game, and it's kind of been, what are we looking at since? So, and Missouri's come out and played well. So, I mean, that game could be one of those very interesting games in the SEC. And don't forget, their starting quarterback was the quarterback who started for Ole Miss last season to begin the year. And he was put on the bench after he got Wally pipped a little bit.
And he is going to have his hair on fire. How well he'll play, I don't know. But he is going to be excited to be back in Oxford and showing what they, in his opinion, they missed out on. You know, the other ones that catch my attention a little bit, you look at a few games tomorrow. Florida, Jeffrey goes to Texas. And Texas has just not impressed me as much this year. Well, good point. You're right. I think that instead of getting on to Texas for the performance last week, you've got to give Oklahoma some credit, especially that defense.
That defense showed up well. You know, Texas has underperformed a little bit as a team. But, you know, I give credit to Oklahoma's defense on shutting them down. Manny has to have some help. He has to have some help from his receivers. He has to have some help from his offensive line. But, anyway, I do like Texas tomorrow. I'll tell you, I'll end it this way. I'm just going to end it this way. And I'm going to say that I think I'll give you the score for tomorrow.
And it's the one you can put down. And I think Kentucky will go to Oklahoma, and Kentucky will beat Oklahoma 35-34. They'll do it three weeks in a row by the same score in the two-point conversion. They've got everything going their way. They're a fun team to watch right now and playing really well. So, that should be a good one. Any upset, y'all say? It's not in our footprint, so to speak. But, I mean, let's talk about Ohio State going to Indiana. Oh, yeah. Those two teams are pretty highly ranked, if I remember correctly.
Yeah, they are. It's an 11 o'clock game in Bloomington. Yes, and you know right now Ohio State is still stinging from losing to Indiana last year. But I heard somebody say it today, and I tend to agree. Indiana may be one of the best coached teams in all of America. They showed it last year. They did it again against Nebraska when they looked like they were down. And they just battled back and won that one. So, it'll be a close game. But something tells me the Buckeyes may win that one.
We're at the half where Florence and Austin are tied at 14. Buckle up, Falcon fans. Third quarter action coming on this windy, cold night in Decatur, Alabama. Florence took the opening kick into the wind and went down and scored early on 7-0. Kayon getting the touchdown, Kayon Williams. But Austin answered right back, and Aiden Davis put it into the end zone, and it was 7-7 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Florence got stopped, had to punt it into the wind, actually still in the first quarter, into the wind. And that punt into the wind only went about 15-20 yards. I mean, it was just brutal. And not the punt, but just because of the wind. And it was at the 40-yard line, and the Black Bears, the Black Bears drove it 40 yards, and Davis put it in zone 14-7. Florence fumbled it three times between then and the end of the first half. But finally, a two-minute drive, actually with a minute left, they drive it down the field, and it was Mahan to Gullsby for the touchdown.
Extra point good. Tied at 14. There was a penalty at the end of that. That's a 15-yarder against Florence. We'll have to kick it off. Florence will have the wind with them to start the third quarter. Sort of don't like that. Wish they had it in the fourth quarter, but here we go. And Greenhawk kicks it deep, real deep, back to the 15-yard line. Taken there by the Black Bears at the 25 to the 30. Looking for running room. Trying to get outside and hit hard and knocked down.
Great open field tackle there. The Colin Jones comes up and knocks him down. Back inside of the 30-yard line at the 26, and that's where the Black Bears will have it first and 10. And Kenny Morrison out there imploring his team to keep playing well. This is where, with the wind, Mike, I feel like you really got to make something happen, too, if you're Florence. Yeah, I think this quarter is going to be a big quarter here where they're going to have to continue to hammer away and really put the pressure on the Black Bears.
I actually thought we would get to pick the direction we were going since they got the ball. And maybe he did. I don't know. If he did. If he did, that's interesting. He went with it. Maybe because of the kickoff from the 25, too. Davis the tailback behind Jarman the quarterback. Going to give it to Davis up the middle. No pass. Quick throws out the gift. He's got it to 30. He fooled me, and he got about 10 yards. Right around the 32-yard line. Give him seven. But they did a little quick throw to the tight end.
Get it to him, and Gibbs gets it and gets about seven yards. It's a smart play. You're keying on Davis up the middle, up the middle, up the middle, and just being able to soften that outside edge and trying to attack there is a nice play on first down. And an easy pass and throw, too. Second down and three. The shotgun formation again for Austin going left or right. Jarman waiting for the snap. Gets it. Looks to give it to the side. No. He's going to throw a quick screen out here again.
He missed an incomplete. Oh, petty pull. Almost. They're all waving it dead, though. You're right, Kevin. Every time you should run and return it. Kenny Morrison told him to run it to the end zone. I didn't hear a whistle, but the side over here says it was. It was close. Jeffrey Jones, you had the better look than anybody, probably. No. He's got it right there. JJ, was it a forward pass or not? It looked like a lateral to me and the rest of the sideline. We kept encouraging him to just run.
Run to the end zone. Okay. Third down and four. Or three, actually, from the 32. They have to get to the 35. Davis is going to get it up the middle, and he's going to get hit. We got the first down and breaks the tackle and get to the 37. He is just really elusive. It's not just big and strong. He made the first guy miss and will move the chains. And I thought it was a forward pass. Personally, it was close. But it brings up first and ten for the Black Bears at the 37-yard line.
Tied at 14 with 11.26 to go. What made it look awkward was it hung up there for a second because of the wind. And, you know, it just was not a – it was a slow developing play. Off the left side, Davis. Nowhere. Hitting a backfield. Scoot. Hit again. Gets her down. He goes down for no gain. Much better job. Martinez just pounds the ground and said, I hit him three times, and he's still hard to bring down. He gets a yard. If he's going to be the only running back, though, as a defender, you have got to approach it as I'm going to knock him out.
[2:32:25] Not necessarily headhunting, but I'm going to hit him in every leg, every stomach, back, front, side. You're going to let him know you're there. You've got to hit him because he's already got – he's already got 23 carries. He had 38 carries, I think it was, last week against Hartsell. Second down and nine. Watch for the pass here. Jarman going to lead with the back of the middle. Davis trying to bounce, and he's hit and spins forward and leans forward out to the 45. He got hit at the 40, and I saw it that time.
Man, he's strong. Yeah, he peeled off that tackle as he was trying to be brought down. He peeled off the tackle, put his hand in the dirt, and just dove about three yards to get the extra yardage. Third and two. You've got to lock up with him. Ten minutes and seven seconds, you see. Coach Jeremy Perkins wisely going to use that play clock to all his advantage. He wants to run this third quarter down. Shorten this game. Tied at 14. Third and two. The Falcon fans doing all they can, try to make noise here in front of us.
Shotgun formation again. Davis right up the middle. Stopped a hit. He's going nowhere. He got away and got the first down. Jaden White had him. He spun away and got the first down. I thought Jaden White was waiting on the whistle, and he had him, and he let go, and he stayed on his feet, and he got the first down to the 48. That was a big-time play by Aiden Davis. That was a big-time play by Aiden Davis. You cannot give up on the tackle. You have to wrap him up and bring him to the turf.
And run your feet, Mike. That's one of the key. What Jaden forgot on that was he stopped his feet. First and ten. Davis off the left side. Looking actually at Greer Gibbs with it. And Gibbs running hard. He gets across the 40 to the 39. So, they bring in a different back, and he has a fresh look, and he gets six. That's too much for Gibbs. And enough to move the chains. That was actually a 10-yard gain. We're about 10 rows up maybe here, so it's not always easy to judge, but it's going to be at the 38-yard line after the 10-yard gain.
Davis still out, so they'll leave Gibbs in at tailback. 8.57 and counting. Tied at 14. This is where your Florence tied at 14. Gibbs back there at tailback. You've got to be alert to the pass player, the quarterback run. Gibbs up the middle. Has a little space. Got to the 40 and hit down around the 39. Give him about – or 34, excuse me. Gain of about three or four. Second down and six, we'll call it. And Aiden, actually, KJ, is playing HVAC right now, getting a little rest. And he is right now.
He's back in, playing that HVAC position. So, you better be alert to him getting the ball some other way, maybe in the passing game. Going to leave it again. Nope. Looked a throw. They wanted to throw it to him. The quarterback, Charmin, wants to run it, and he's hit and spins far to the 28. The Austin fans thought it might have been a face mask, but he grabbed him from behind. But that's going to be enough to move the chains again, I do believe. First down. Ball all the way down to the 28-yard line.
Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. It's Falcon defense. It's got to get some penetration if they're going to stop this offensive of Austin. If we've got to stop, you've got to be stopping Gibbs. You've got to stop Gibbs no matter what. Because when Davis is running, he's ten times tougher to stop. So, you know, we're going to have to mix it up a little bit. We're going to have to bring a little bit more pressure. We're going to have to wrap up. And off to Davis, off the left.
He's hit at the line of scrimmage. Only a gain of one or two. Better job of the defense there. Jayden White and others coming up off the ground, including ninth pride, I think, that time. Only a gain of about one second down and nine. This Falcon defense is going to have to just bow up. Watch here maybe for the pass play, too, on the second down and nine. Jeremy Perkins taking his time getting a play in here. He's in four-down territory, though, and he's milked this clock down for seven minutes, or five minutes.
Hit in the line of scrimmage, hit at the back, still looking. Davis trying to get outside. Gets away from one, trying to get away. Can't get away from two. Brought down at the 28. He'll lose yardage. That time, the Falcons did a much better job, Mike. Yes, that was a great job by the Falcons. Otis, his trunk, came up, and he made the initial hit, and Davis almost squeaked away, but Otis held on for dear life and took him down by the ankles. We saw the screen pass earlier to Davis, and it was really well run.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him get it again. The 625 mark, tied at 14. Four-down territory. Third and 11. Falcon fans on their feet. Two wide outs to the left. Jarman looks to roll to the left and throw. Wants to get a pass off if he can. Now he has time to run it. Has room. Up to the 20-yard line and hit. I thought. And they get a flag, do they? They got the flag. They got the flag. And they deserved it. It was really way out of bounds.
[2:37:39] So, Florence gives away 15 on the late hit on the Austin sideline, and that was a tough one right there, undisciplined right there by Florence. This is the stuff that will come back to bite you. We have been undisciplined in this second quarter and beyond so far. Jeffrey, would they have had a first down anyway? No. He would have been short at the 20-yard line. But now it will move it all the way down to the 10 and maybe even side of the 10. Let's see. Right at the 10-yard line, it should be first and goal for Austin.
And it was the right call. You could see the field opened up on that side. And the quarterback took off running with it. Donovan Jarman did what he was supposed to do. First and goal for the Black Bears at the 10. High snap. Quarterback's going to keep it, and that's Davis. He scoots far to the five. So, he runs that wildcat formation and gets five yards. Florence starting to bring in some more help up front. Petway will come in, trying to get some beef in, extra guy up front.
Second goal to the five with 5.53 to go here in the third quarter. Austin has taken the ball and marched it down the field. Davis is staying in at quarterback with Gibbs at tailback. On this second down goal, play from five. Davis. From behind and knocked down. Great tackle right there. That was Martinez who come from behind and brings him down. And that's how you have to have Davis running. You have to keep him bouncing side to side. Never let him get his shoulders turned square. 5-18 and counting in the third quarter.
Third and goal. Jeffrey, where is the ball now? Is it seven? Yes, inside the seven. Seven-yard line. Third and goal. Check that. Yep, third and goal at the seven. And they'll bring back. Again, watch Davis throwing the ball here. He can't do that. Davis gets it, rolls to the right. Look, it has room. Can't get away. Knocked down at the five. Again, Pettway making a play there along with another defense lineman who's slow. Extras and Austin got away with two extracurricular hits. They're going to have to put 14 out.
Sales over there was getting into it. Florence got to give him credit. He backed away. And now field goal time for the Black Bears. So they'll go for a field goal with Oscar Delgado, the senior. It will be a 22-yarder into the win, but it's dead center. Good snap, good hold, kick. And before the snap, before the snap, a whistle. Flag. And a flag on the play. And I believe it's going to be against the Black Bears who were fault started. And that's going to move it back five yards.
4-13 on the clock. Tied at 14. They're falling apart a little. Their offensive line is pretty much throwing haymakers at each other. There's still a flag on the field. Now the backers will get it. The umpire will, excuse me. So now it'll make it a harder field goal, 27-yard. Good snap, good hold. This time the kick. Block! It's blocked! It can be picked up on the floor, and they do. But they'll be doing it. It's good to see. It's good to see. But it'll be Florence's ball after the blocked field goal.
It was blocked up the middle. I didn't see who got it. It don't matter. It's Florence's ball after the blocked kick. What a play, Mike, by that Florence team. The bend, but not break. You know, that penalty really, really knocked things off the board there for Austin. They had that field goal kicked, and it was good. That second opportunity, a little bit more difficult. He had to get a little more drive, and it kept it lower right to the Falcon defense. Kayon Williams in at tailback.
He'll stand in that pistol formation behind the shotgun quarterback. Mahan against a four-man front. Nine in the box. Kayon off the left side. Got across the 35, to the 30, to the 25. Break the tackle and finally brought down at the 23. Move the change for Florence, and Kayon is back. It's getting real chippy down there. After every play, there's players in each other's face. It's going to be a battle to the very end. First down at the 23. We're in behind them. Green wide right. Goal three wide left. One back is Kayon Williams.
[2:42:52] Now two tight ends come back to the left. Blank can get there, too. Left side. Get it to Williams. He hit at the line of scrimmage. He can push as far to the 20. Give him about a yard. Good job by that Austin defense coming up right there. That was Landon Baker, one of their leading tacklers, making a play. Brings up second down. And a rare case of good sportsmanship. Both sides trying to help each other up and miss the hand up, but when they got up, they hugged.
Second down and eight. Mitch Boyd and Kirkland Blank, the tight end at HVAC, doing a great job. Two-fifty to go in the third. Tied at 14. After the blocked field goal in return, they've got it inside Austin territory. Kayon is still in that pistol formation behind the quarterback, Mahan. Eight in the box. Watch for Gouldsby here. Nope. Going to be Williams. Cuts back left. Getting on his feet. Spins forward and he gets knocked down at the 15. He gets about four. And it brings up third and a short three.
Got it. Got to have points on this one, though. Leading up into the fourth quarter, we'll be into the win that entire fourth quarter coming up. Got to, got to put on points. Seven, please. Seven, not three, yeah. I think you go for it. I think it's four down territory. I don't think you keep the field goal. Eye formation. The hot of the fullback. Williams, the tailback. Going to leave it with Williams. Looking up the middle. Pushes forward. He didn't get it. He's knocked down at the 15.
He's going to get a yard. And he's going to be fourth and two in decision time for Kenny Morrison. And he's going to kick the field goal. He's going to put points on there. He'll have the win behind him. I don't like it. I wish we'd have gone for it, but we didn't get anything. And it was fourth and three. Went right up into the teeth of the defense there. It's probably the right call. The ball is from the left hash. I agree with the weather the way it is, but you've got to get points here.
Well, they're selling out to come after it, too. Mahan is the holder. Remember that. Got the hole down. Kick on the way. It's got distance. And the kick is good. Greenhaw drills it through the uprights. And Florence takes a 17-14 lead with 109 to go in the third. This is Falcon football. We're back in 30.
That's it. Florence, call Tyson Johnson, Luke Brown, Kirby Allen, Victoria Devaney, Brant Bishop, or Daniel Box with Henniger Johnson and Layton Insurance Agency. 256-764-8682. 109 to go here in the third quarter. And Florence takes their first lead since early in the first quarter. They lead at 17-14. After the 33-yard field goal from Greenhaw, let's get that last drive.
Kevin was quick. Two minutes, 46 seconds. It's five plays, 19 yards. Greenhaw's kick is going to drive all the way back to the end zone. Hit right at the 50s. Gets away and gets to the 25. And finally brought out of bounds by Burski. And that's where the Black Bears will have it there on the return by Hampton. But the big play on that whole thing was the block field goal by Florence on one end. It was Petty Poole, I believe, who returned it about 45 yards. Honestly, Mike, Florence had a chance maybe to scoop that field goal earlier, and it took a time.
If they'd scooped it earlier, they'd have scored. That's one of those situations that happens so infrequently. Sometimes the players are thinking way too much on the field. But luckily, they did scoop it up and flip the field so that we could turn points out of that play. First and 10 for the Black Bears with 103 to go. And one thing about it is that the wind is still ripping up. It's not as bad, maybe, I hate to say that, as it was. No, I feel like that's accurate.
Yeah, I think it's died down a tad. So it might not be as big of that. It's only blustery, not Gale Forrest. Davis up the middle. Hit at the 25. Pushes far to the 30. He's got about eight before he's brought down. It took about five minutes to push him back. He is a load. Kenny Morrison told me before this week, he said, I'm so worried about this running back. He is as good as we'll see. He's just a different type of back, isn't he, Mike? He certainly is.
I mean, we saw the kid from Jasper who's got all the accolades and all the things coming his way. But this kid's just a different breed. He's just straight down your throat. You know, stop me if you can. It's a challenge each and every touch. Jeremy Perkins running that clock down. He wants to get to the fourth quarter and have the win. Second down and two play. Going to leave it with Davis up the left side. And he hits the line of scrimmage. He's going to get the first down at the 35.
[2:48:12] And that is, they'll move the chains now. Very generous spot. I'm getting used to the spots now. If it's anywhere close, they're going to get it. First and 10. And the blackberries won't snap it again. Three quarters in the books. Florence leads it 17-14. Falcon football back in one minute. Craving authentic Mexican flavor? Bell Green leads Waterloo 28-6.
And the Guardians and Rays postponed. Here at Austin High School, definitely not postponed here. Wind and cold front, cold weather, temperature dropping, and Florence and Austin having a dandy. Florence leads it 17-14. After Florence was trailed 14-7 in the first half. Scoring on the final play of the half on a touchdown pass from Mayan to Goolsby. Extra point by Greenhall Good. And Florence gets the only score in the third quarter. They block a field goal of Austin, and Greenhall answers with a field goal. But Austin will have the win behind their back, first and 10, at their own 35-yard line.
When we get underway in just a minute, Kenny Morrison was holding court with the white hat referee. Still not sure what he was talking about. We'll find out later. At the 35, one back, Davis to the left of the quarterback, Jarman. He wants to pass, looking to the left, wants to throw across the middle. And the man is up there and almost intercepted. Penny Poole went up there with him, trying to hit Gibbs. And Penny Poole almost pulled that ball away, incomplete, second down. He almost got a flag, too.
He was a little early on that one, in my estimation. But no call on that play, so we live to play another down. The one thing, though, you see immediately, as soon as Austin got the win, the passing started happening. So, they're going to look to stretch his defense a little bit to get their run game a little more running room. Second down and 10 for the Black Bears. They'll have two wide outs to the right, including Sale out there, Sales and Jones. To the left will be Nike.
Falcons show blitz back out of it. Going to leave it with Davis up the middle, bouncing hit, but he drags the defender down. Still dragging the defender. Finally gets brought down around the 42. He'll get about eight, depending on what the official marks. It looked like he got down at the 42. They give him the 43. He'll be third and one. Am I the only one saying that? I've, we're. We just talked about it going the other way. He is consistently inconsistent. I've, yeah. I'm just not going to rag on the officials all the time, but anytime you come here, it's always an adventure.
Third and a long one for the Black Bears at the 43. Lawrence has five in the box. Now, seven. Going to leave it with Davis off the right side. He tries to cut it up. He's hit, and he's not going to get it. He was hit at the line of scrimmage, and Lawrence says fourth down. Again, depending on the mark, he never got to the 44, and he keeps moving up to the left. I mean, he gave him a yard to carry, and he didn't even get there.
This is the Winston-Salem wide guy. It's unbelievable. It's unbelievable. He gave him a yard and went even close. Kevin, I don't know if you've noticed, but the line judge on the Austin side is not spotting the ball at all. At all. He just stands aware of it. I've never seen that. It's unreal. Fourth and a yard to go. They have to get to the 45. The Falcon crowd being deplored to get on his feet. All right, Jayden Wyatt, let's do work. Going to give it to Davis off the right side, use his feet, trying to get out.
He does to the 45, to the 50, to the 45, and gets down to the 40-yard line before he's knocked out of bounds. No flags on the play. They crushed the right side. And Abrea first down. Kenny Morrison said, you've got to be kidding me. It was a hold on that right side. He's still signaling to the white hat. It was a hold. But he's not going to get the call now. So, it'll be first and 10 for Austin at the Falcons. Well, they just keep moving the ball up to the 38-yard line.
You never know where they're going to spot it. That's what we're trying to say. With 10-19 to go, Florence leading at 17-14. Davis right behind. Actually, that's Gibbs now thinking the game. Gibbs off the right side. Trying to look. Trying to bounce it. Gets by one. But he's hit around out of bounds around across the way about the 34-yard line in front of the Austin bench. Gain of about two or three. You're going to see a lot of these runs going to the right towards that Austin bench, especially later on in this game.
[2:53:33] Yep. You're not going to see any holding calls, anything else on that side of the field, I guarantee. It's an old adage that coaches know. And Jeremy Perkins is a veteran coach. You run it to your sideline, and you're probably going to get out of the call and go your way. Gosh, he got four yards on that. Second down and six at the Falcon 33. Under 10 minutes to go. Florence leads it by three. But the Black Bears are driving. Seven on the play clock. Black Bears still slow to get it out there.
Gibbs is still the tailback. For Jarman, the quarterback. Jarman's going to look to pass. Looking left. Wants to throw. Left side. Got a man out there, but he overthrows everybody. He had a man open, but he overthrew him about five yards. And that time, the wind might have caused it a little bit, too, on the pass, Mike. Absolutely. He put that ball up in the jet stream for sure. That was not a line drive pass. He threw it up there, and it just sailed out of the end zone.
And that just shows how impressive the pass from Mahan was earlier in the first half, in the same way to get those two big pass plays. We also had a defender who broke loose late with his hands up, and he tried to throw it over him. And I think that also caused a little extra horsepower. Davis back in the game at tailback. Third and seven. Falcon fans trying their best to help him. Luck to Davis off the right side. Cuts it up. Got the first down across the 25 down to the 20.
He'll have an easy first down off that right side. And Jeffrey Jones, we haven't talked about it a whole lot except a few times, but they have a 400-pound lineman, not lying, and a 300-pound lineman on that side. And they're running right behind him. And, you know, it's been a while since I've seen one player take over a game on offense. I mean, I'd say he's got to be at least 80% of their offense, if not more. Maybe more. Yep. First and 10. Just outside the 20 at the 22-yard line.
Davis will stay in at tailback to the left of the quarterback, Jarman. Need a turnover here for Florence. Davis looking to bounce out to the right. Hits it in and gets hit at the 20 as he's brought down. He had nothing, but he made something. That's the thing he does, Mike. He'll take a zero gain and make it a two-yard gain. But you could tell earlier in the game he would try and string that play out more towards the outside. He went down early on that one.
He may be getting worn out with all these touches for sure. Klotzbach will come in for Martinez. Rowlett's in on the outside as well right now. Inside linebackers are Irons and Burski. This time left side trying to get it to Davis. Cuts it back. He's hit. Bounce far, but he's knocked down. Jaden White popped him pretty good at the 17. And he'll have third down and six as a two-yard gain. Jeffrey Jones, you've got a better look. What yard line do they have to get to to get the first down to Austin?
They've got to get to the 12. At the 12. Just inside the 12. Florence leads it by three with 8-10 to go and counting. Three wide out for Jarman. One back in the backfield. It's Davis. Boy, if I was Florence, I'd be jumping around. He's going to give it to Davis off the right side. Cuts it up in the middle. Push forward and cross the 15. He got the first down down to around the 11. He just finds holes. And sometimes, Mike, he makes holes. Well, when you're that strong and you're going through arm tackles, you know, guys are tackling up high.
I don't see too many guys going low. And so, if you're tackling up high, he's going to beat you every time. So, Austin will have it first and not goal, but first and 10 outside the 10 at the 11. Three wide outs again. That ball is not going in there. They do have a new back in Gibbs on this first down play, though. Gibbs off the left side looking. Spucks to the middle. Across the 10 down to the 5. Inside the 5 to the 4. And that Falcon defense getting leaned on too much right now with 7.25 to go here in the game.
But, Florence holding on to a 3-point lead. But, Austin about to put it in the end zone. Davis coming back in. He's going to get the touch. He is. It's first and goal. Our second down and 2 to go at the 3. It's Falcon defense. Hasn't faced an offense like this. It's just pounding ground. But, that's what we're seeing. We haven't seen this since James Clemens years ago. Davis gets it to the right side. Notice the quarterback up the middle. He gets in the end zone. Jarman kept it and slipped in the end zone.
Touchdown with 6.48 to go. And, Austin takes the lead 20 to 17. We saw that coming in. This just leads to this next possession pretty much being everything for the Falcons. This may come down to whoever has the ball last wins this one. With 6.48 to go, the Falcons need to take the lead here. Low snout, but the kick is up and good. New score. Austin leads it 21 to 17. Falcon football returns in 30 seconds. At First Southern Bank, we always cheer for the home team. We are homegrown with deep roots.

The Shoals. 93-9. The score. Back here at Austin High School, the Black Bears take the lead. And, John, that last drive. Kevin, it was 14 plays, 75 yards, six minutes and 14 seconds that came off of the clock. Marsh will take the kick at the three. Goes to the left, looking for running room. Not much there. And, he's hit for 13 and goes down. And, for the first time in a while, Mike, I'll say this. We have had, where we've had good protection on kicks, we have not done that well tonight.
No, we certainly have not. It's not been a great showing on the return side of things at this point. So, Florence will have to go 87 yards. What's your take on a guy doing a backhand spring on the field? Is that a… Oh, is that a celebration? Is that a… Was that on the field or was that… It was on the 20. Was that coming on to the field or going off? It was after the play. After the play. That would be interesting. I don't know. I saw backhand spring.
We haven't had enough players do that, be able to do that. Williams is the tailback for Mayhem, the quarterback. Williams, no, play, action, pass, complete to Green, spins away, 20, 25. Going down to the left side on 30, 35, and he's finally brought down. Love a play by Kavante there. He did a little shimmy and a shake, and he got another 10, 15 yards. He just stayed arm distance away from the guy, and any time he came close, he just punched him with a little stiff arm there, really got him off his guy.
Second down, or first down and 10 at the 34. Gain of about 20. Check back to the sideline. 6.18 to go in the game. Florence trails at 21.17 now. Green is wide right. Goolsby wide left. Williams is the tailback. They bring the blitz, play action, wants to pass again, has time, lets it go down the right sideline. It's going to be a jump ball. Green comes back, tries to get it. It was being held, but no flag, incomplete. He was being held, and it was quite obvious. Green only had one opportunity with the one arm.
They're going to say it's mutual, you know, mutual fighting. Not too much argument from Florence right there on the sideline. Second down and 10. I'm not a huge fan of throwing it up into the wind like that. That ball did hang up there. Now, second and long, it just makes it difficult for the offense. Yeah, I mean, you're probably looking at four down territory all the way, I think, in this win. 5.59 to go in the game, down by four. But Kayon Williams has it. Up the middle, gets hit and brought down immediately.
He got hit pretty hard right there around the line of scrimmage, third and 10. And that's the danger of having this situation with the wind is now they can just pin their ears back and key on the run. But with it being third and 10, I guess anything's possible, you know. But on that second down play, he pretty well knew it was going to be a run. Goolsby and Kavante Green will come wide to the right. Tejada will be the tight end to the left along with, we'll check that, blank.
The tailback is Kavante. Going to leave it. No play action. Want to pass. Mahan, look. Now he's got time. Deep down the middle. Ball hangs up for Kavante, and he can't get it. And the flag comes out. They're reaching for it, and there it is. Thank goodness. Because he was being tackled. And that'll be enough for a first down. And I'll give Mahan credit. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. That was a heck of a throw into the wind. Yeah, we're lucky he's a pitcher because he's got the accuracy and he's got the touch, too.
And he just threw that one up, and thankfully we got the call on that one, which, you know, they've missed two calls in the last two plays. Twice now, Coulson's been questionably hit late after he's thrown the ball. He was hit on time on that one. So, it'll be 15 yards from the 33. It should be at the 48. And Florence will have it first and 10 at close to midfield with 5'11 to go, trailing by four. They'll mark it at the 49. And this, you never know if you get 15 or 16.
[3:03:36] It just depends. We'll take the 16-yard penalty. First and 10 at the 49. Florence 51 yards away. Kayon Williams is your tailback. Kirkman wide right. And the slot is Gouldsby. Four-man front. They've got about seven or eight in the box. That's Austin. Now that's shifted tight and eights to the left. Going to go left with it. And that's Kayon. Got a hold to the 45. Lowers his head and gets about five. Tough yards right there. What I'd like to see out of Florence right here with five minutes to go is running the clock a little bit.
If we wind up scoring late, you know, you don't want to give Austin another opportunity. They're only going to be able to really, truly run the ball. And you're going to give them the ball back with a little bit too much time if you score too early. At the 43, second down and five. Both teams have all three timeouts left. Florence trails by four. Kayon Williams to the right of the shotgun quarterback, Mahan, on the second down five play. And before the snap, a timeout taken by Kenny Morrison.
We'll do the same. Florence trails Austin 21-17 with 4.27 to go. Falcon football back in 30. Florence trails Austin 21-17. Kevin Johnson, Mike Albertson, Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. John McDaniel are statistician. Florence leaning on Kayon Williams at tailback here in the second half. Has two wideouts. Green to the left, who's had some big catches, and Goolsbee, who's had some big catches. Mahan has played outstanding. Second down and five to go against a four-man front. Pass to the left.
Got it to Green. Got it. Got enough for the first down at the 38 on the down-and-out pattern. Should be enough to move the chains, and it will. That was a great catch by Green. His beautiful hands there. He just stuck it and pulled himself right out of bounds. 4.24 to go. In the game. Green to the right now, to the wide side. We march into the wind towards the Austin locker room to our right. Here sitting on the visitor's side. Goolsbee wide left. Kayon off the left side.
Not in much running room there, but he lowers his head and got about a yard or two. Get him to about the 36, depending on the mark there. They'll give him a yard to the 37, and we'll go under four minutes here in about six seconds. Four minutes to go in the game right now. Florence down by four. Can Kayon Williams break one free? The sophomore has been great. His first game back after being out three games. Green out wide right. And in the slot next to him on the wide side is dual free.
They've got a mix-up on the black bears. We need to take advantage of it. Play action. Wants to throw. Looking. Trying to run. Now he's in trouble. It's Mahan. He's got to get rid of it. Down the left side line, he'll throw it to his running back and out of bounds. Incomplete. That one didn't have what we needed. They had three on our two, and they were waiting on it. It wasn't open, and it brings up third and eight. That's where you really want to be able to audible.
Like you said, Kevin, they had way too many out defending. They had at least three defenders over two wide receivers. You're in four down territory with 332 to go. You've got two timeouts left here for Florence. Clock stopped at 332. Sullivan had a key to the game along with Elliott. Goalsby to the right. Green to the left. Went back is Williams. Oh, he fumbled it. Ball to the ground and recovered by Austin in the backfield. Turnover Florence and the Falcons in their deep hole now with 329 to go.
The fourth turnover of the night for the Falcons. And Austin will have it with the win to their back. And Florence only left with two timeouts. Just the exchange didn't go well, Mike. The exchange did not go well. That's a great way of putting it. It's pretty frustrating because this team is far better than they've shown tonight. Once again, when everything is on the line, we just folded at the wrong time. They still have an opportunity with 329 left, but the chances are quite slim. At the 41, and they're going to get a dose of number nine.
[3:09:06] The 6'2", 220-pound tailback, who's been outstanding, Aiden Davis. If you're Florence, you've got to take some chances here. You've got to bring some pressure. Davis off the middle. Breaks a tackle at the 45 and gets to the 50. Gain of nine. And the clock will run. It's hard to take chances when the kid's just running downhill constantly. You know, it really is. You can send the house, but once he gets past that level, it's just big yardage. Go Terrell Wisdom, defense coordinator, sending signals. Second down and one.
That means they get an extra play here, and they can run a lot more clock. They can run it all the way down to about a minute, two minutes and 50 seconds, or 40 seconds, before they snap it. They're in single digits before they come set. Davis up the middle. Got the first down. It stays on his feet. Breaks a tackle to the 40, to the 35. It goes down the sideline, 30, 25, and finally pushed out of bounds. The only saving thing there was he pushed him out of bounds with 2.36 to go to stop the clock.
But it'll be first and 10 inside the Falcon 20. Actually, they're going to mark him at the 22 where he stepped out. And that big offensive line for Austin has just controlled this game. And Florence has shot themselves in the foot way too many times tonight. Davis, the tailback, will get it again off the right side. This time he's hit by Jaden White, brought down at the 19, a gain of three. And Kenny Morrison's going to use one of his timeouts. With 2.27 to go, we'll do the same. Florence trails Austin 21-17 in a deep hole.

Two minutes, 27 seconds to go in the game, and Florence is in a deep battle. Down by four, and Austin with the football at the Falcon 19. With one timeout to left, this Austin team, Mike, can pretty much milk this clock down to about a minute. Yeah, they certainly could. It's one of those situations where Coach Perkins has done a masterful job in this second half and just being able to milk the clock and run it down to keep the ball away from Florence. Davis to the right side again, hit at the line of scrimmage, but we'll get nothing really.
Timeout taken by Kenny Morrison. His final timeout at 2.20 to go. We'll take that timeout with him. Florence trails 21-17. We're back in 30. Hello, this is Kevin Arnold with Village Discount Drugs. So make the switch to Village Drugs, a local pharmacy, where we are the Shoals' problem solvers and people pleasers. 2.22 to go. Florence trails Austin 21-17. And the Black Bears will face second down, I think it is, no, third down, excuse me, and six to go from the 17. But Florence can't stop the clock again, so the Falcons, even if they stopped Austin, wouldn't see the ball again until one minute. A first down would end the game.
A touchdown would end the game for Austin. And Davis is in the backfield behind the quarterback, Jarman. I'm not sure how many times he's touched it, but it's got to be over 30 easy. Davis off the right side, looking, cuts up in the middle, 15, stays on his feet, down around the 10. He should have enough for the first down. And that's going to do it. And there was taunting right there. Big fellow was dancing in front of one of our players on the ground, conveniently forgotten and ignored.
And 2-10 and counting. And the Black Bears can take a knee now. I think with the way this play clock is done, they could probably take a knee. It'd be close. That's why they're not sure yet. I think they'll just run their offense. He may run it all the way down and call the timeout. He's got 17 on the play clock. Jeremy Perkins holding his offense there. And give him credit. The veteran coach, he's holding it before he calls the play in to where he wants it.
[3:14:19] Now he gets it in with eight on the play clock. 140 on the regular clock. Davis off the right side again. Davis looking to cut back. Irons tried to get him, pushed him down at the nine. 130 and the clock will run. Just has not been the Falcons night. Turnovers, mistakes, fought hard. But the Black Bears are starting to feel it. And Kenny Marson, a veteran coach. He's now telling the guys on the sideline, when we say cans, we're going to do it in class already. The veteran coach preaching to his team that.
Austin will go into victory formation. They'll snap it one more time and that'll do it. And that will do it. They won't have to snap it again. And the Black Bears will have a chance to play for a region title themselves next week against the Russell for Golden Tigers. Meanwhile, Florence will lick their wounds and have their first loss of the season as they fall here to Austin by a score of 21-17. I've got questions about how this game even operates, though. They took a knee at 44 seconds and then they reset the ball 24 seconds later.
20 seconds to go. Is that how it works? It doesn't matter. The game is over. I'm just saying. Florence is showing classes. We're waiting for them to get in the line. And now they come. They're celebrating their victory. And Austin wins it over Florence by a score of 21-17. This is Falcon football. We're back in one minute. Back here at Austin High School, the TNT Fireworks postgame show. Not good news for the Falcon fans. For the first time this season, Florence falls and loses the game 21-17 in a hard-fought game here at Austin High School. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline there. I think it's close to the head coach, Kenny Morrison. Morrison, just interrupt me when you get him. I've lost him. Hold on a minute. Okay, we'll let you catch him there. Okay, I got him. As he's telling, he's having a moment with Aiden Davis, the great running back for Austin, who can play at the next level.
And Kenny Morrison's letting him know that. Nice sportsmanship there. Let's go down to Jeffrey Jones with the head coach. Coach, the point about it is it just wasn't our night, was it? No, it was not our night. Austin, hats off to Coach Perkins. Those guys, they played really well tonight. We had some turnovers. Things didn't go our way. They whipped our tails tonight. There was some bright spots. We faced some adversity with that wind all night long. Some great receptions by our receivers downfield. There was some things to learn on.
Yeah, we got a lot to build on. We took a step back tonight. I was a little disappointed in our sideline stuff in the first half. And we've got some maturity issues that we got to grow up. And we got to just keep working. Hey, a lot's ahead of us. Who knows? Russell is a dadgum good football team. Russell beats them next week. We're still reaching champs with a win over Hartzell. So, lots ahead of us. We'll see what happens. Next week, we'll kind of learn how to bounce back.
[3:19:29] We haven't lost yet this year. We learned to tonight. You know, we learned a lot. So, next year or next week, expect some different attitudes and whatnot. More humbleness. Absolutely. We got humble tonight, for sure. We've got to mature and grow from it and learn from it. You know, I'll say this. If the worst thing happens to these guys in their lifetime, they're going to be okay. It's a football game at the end of the day. Not taking anything away from Coach Perkins and those guys.
Phenomenal job. They've got a phenomenal team. And they always peak at this time. Thanks, Coach. Have a good night. Hey, Coach. Kenny Marson with Jeffrey Jones. Who did a good job there. That's Florence Falls. 21-17 to Austin here on the road at Austin. Just not the Falcons' ninth. And if you want to get down to it, it was all about turnovers. And Florence turned it over four times. I'm not sure that the Black Bears even turned it over once. If you count the block field, there's one turnover they said is our statistician.
But Florence just couldn't take care of the football. And that got them in a game where you knew it's going to be a matter of possessions, Mike, and a matter of time of possession. And to give tip of the hat to the Austin Black Bears, as Coach Kenny Marson said, at the end of the day, they were the better team tonight. They certainly were the better team tonight. They executed a little bit better than Florence did. That's why the score is the way it is. And that is ultimately if Florence can look at this game and see that they beat themselves as much as Austin whooped them.
And that's what it is. Aidan Davis, tremendous back. We could sing his praises all day long. But at the end of the day, four turnovers isn't going to beat many teams. No, it really isn't. And that's where the Falcons found themselves tonight. Austin wins their homecoming game. And give the Black Bears all the credit. They did what they were supposed to do. It's not over yet for Florence. As you heard Coach Kenny Marson say, when it comes to region games and region title opportunities, Austin, I think, goes on the road next week to Russellville.
Florence will be home against Hartzell. If Russellville was to beat Austin and if Florence were to beat Hartzell, then Florence would be the region champion. But those are things still down the road, so we'll see where that is as well. You've had an opportunity to seal your own fate and do it yourself. And when you leave it in the hands of other folks, that's where you're going to come up disappointed. So I hope this doesn't come back to bite us two years in a row. It's quite unfortunate that we're in the situation that we're in.
However, we're going to still have to handle our business next week and worry about just what we can control. And that's all we can control is how we handle this adversity and head towards Hartzell next week. It will be a tough one for Florence to swallow, but it's definitely not the end of the season. And I know this veteran coaching staff, they will work all they can to wake this Falcon team up and say, OK, now, you've been hit in the mouth. Welcome to real world.
You don't have to worry about the undefeated season. You're 7-1. Now you can turn your attention to what you've got to do and try to make this thing a 9-1 season. But first things first, make it 8-1 next week against the Hartzell Tigers. You're listening to the TNT Fireworks Post Game Show. We're back in one minute. Hello, my name is Keith Medley, and I'm an attorney with the law firm of Johnson, Passuer, Medley & Burchill. Back at Austin High School, where Florence falls to the Black Bears 21-17, and a huge upset for the Black Bears knocking off the undefeated Florence Falcons here, 21-17. On a cold, windy night, no excuses. The Black Bears just did what they had to do. It played in their way, in their favor, and they took advantage of it and took advantage of the Falcons' turnovers and mishaps.
And that really was a big difference in the game. And the Falcons will go home down 7-1 now after the loss. Let's get our stats brought to us by our friends at Chick-fil-A. And let John McDaniel take it away. Thank you, KJ. The Black Bears tonight, for the game, they had 323 yards of total offense. 61 rushes tonight for 310 yards on the ground. Just two for seven passing for 13 yards. 21 first downs on the night. Six for 13 on third down conversions. Three for four on fourth down conversions. The one turnover.
[3:24:41] Penalties tonight, nine for 79 yards. Three for three on their PATs. The time of possession, three minutes and 39 seconds. I'm sorry, 31 minutes and 39 seconds for the Black Bears. The Falcons tonight, 271 yards of offense. We had 24 rushes for 150 yards. Eight for 10 passing, 121 yards. We had 13 first downs on the night. 0 for three on third down conversions. And no fourth down attempts tonight. The big four turnovers we've already mentioned. Five penalties for 65 yards. Of course, two for two on our PAT attempts. And our time of possession, 15 minutes, 40 seconds. Kion tonight, he had 17 carries for 124 yards and a touchdown.
Of course, Kion was eight for 10 for 121 yards and a touchdown. And John Carter builds me. He had two big catches, 67 yards and a touchdown. And since I'm sure everybody is wondering how did Mr. Davis do tonight, well, he only had 42 carries for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Wow, 42 for 250. It's been a while since we've seen one player just dominate a game. He had the great offensive line up in front of him. But trust me, the kid can play. And he showed it there. He is a handful.
And this Austin team is built around one player in so many ways. And, you know, it came down to Florence in the second half. It tied at 14. Couldn't get it in the end zone. Ended up settling for a field goal. At the time, we didn't know if it was the right decision. But, hey, I can't second guess the coach because he knew, hey, I've got to believe in it. The field goal was good. You took the lead. But just couldn't hold the Black Bears out of the end zone and couldn't put it back in the end zone.
And Austin will come away with a 21-17 win tonight here at home against Florence. Our final thoughts, I'll start with our sideline reporter who has been battling through it a little bit tonight. I'm a good friend, Jeffrey Jones. Thanks, KJ. Yeah, it's great. A performance by Aiden Davis. You know, I like giving our guys credit, but he. He did it. Yeah. He did it. No doubt about it. I think the batteries just went out on J.J. right there at the last minute. It just did.
Yep. So it might have been that. Let's go also and find out. No, we were unplugged downstairs. So we're on our backup battery. Yep. My final thoughts are they whooped us when we didn't need a whooping. We need to learn from this. Head on to Hartzell and come away with victory. And then from then on, who knows? But handle what we can control. I know we're getting it right quick. Just 10 seconds there, John. There's not much to say. The better player, the better team won tonight.
Falcons rebound. Come back next week. Let's see how much we can improve in a week. It takes a lot to get an undefeated season. It didn't happen for Florence. They fall to 7-1. Next week, though, they get to take on the Hartzell Tigers and everything still in front of the Falcons going forward. This is Florence Falcon football tonight. For our good friends, our station manager, I should say, Greg Thornton. For James Moody and the 93.9 score studios. My good friends, Mike Albertson, Jeffrey Jones, and John McDaniel.
I'm Kevin Johnson saying have a great night. And we'll see you in church on Sunday. Good night, everyone. You've been listening to Florence Falcons football on sports radio 93.9, The Score.
