For the first time in years, the Florence Falcons opened up 2-0, but an old friend awaits in the region opener between what many think are two of the better teams in 5A right now. It's Florence and Muscle Shoals, and welcome to Florence Falcons football. Hello, everyone. I'm Kevin Johnson, voice of the Florence Falcons. Welcome to the TNT Fireworks pregame show here on 93.9 The Score. I don't know if you've been ready for this game all week, but on the north side of the river, Mike Albertson, my color analyst, everybody's been ready for this one for a while, haven't they?
They certainly have. Look, you know, both of these teams, they, I mean, this is the hottest ticket in town right now. The place is already packed. We've still got an hour until game time, but, you know, with these two teams come together, these two communities come together, it's definitely an exciting, exciting thing. Bragging rights on the line and all that other fun stuff. I will correct you with much respect, because it is packed. It's getting packed. It's not quite there, so don't run away. There's still plenty of seats, so come on if you're listening. Come on and get here and be a part of that.
But a lot of people are going to be here tonight, but plenty of seats still left on that one. But I would dare say, Mike, we could do a three-hour pregame on this one tonight. There's no shortage of storylines, anticipation of this big game. I mean, all the storylines are there, and there's many to choose from. Oh, absolutely. You know, and when you have a big game with lots of storylines, there's lots of talk from both sides. So, you know, but Florence has not had so much success in this matchup.
They're 4-10 lifetime against Muscle Shoals, and, you know, they hadn't really won since 2014. So, I mean, really, going into it, it's been pretty lopsided, but this Falcons team is about as equipped as they've been in years past. Pretty strange when you realize Florence won the first four games, and Muscle Shoals won the next ten, not counting one year that was a COVID year that Florence won by forfeit 1-0 in the COVID year of 2020. And Mike Albertson, Florence off to a great start, but tonight we will find out for sure a whole lot about this Falcons team.
This is going to be a matchup we know more about Falcons. This is a measuring stick, no doubt. Oh, absolutely. You know, we'll see where we're truly at. You know, the first couple of games, you know, have had some talented squads and things like that, but, you know, we really don't know what those teams have either. You know, they had a lot of athletes, but, you know, at the end of the day, you know, when we come here and we're playing against Muscle Shoals, you know, kind of throw the record books out the window because this is one of those big matchups.
But, you know, as I said before, when these two teams are super talented, Muscle Shoals has had a great record over the last decade, you know, and they've made the playoffs each and every year, and they've really made some deep runs. So it's one of those that if we're going to see where we're truly at, we're going to have to measure ourselves tonight. I want to give a big shout-out to my friend Tim Underwood, who's the voice of the Muscle Shoals Trojans. He helped set up everything for us.
We're on the porch here at the press box to the right of the press box. Beautiful setup. We're about the 35-yard line, but he did a lot of work helping set up, and he and I go a long ways back. He, like me, has been doing this a long time. So one of the good guys in the business. Thank you, Tim Underwood, for helping out. Mike, this Falcons team, 2-0, we've seen them win 45-0 over Pinson. We've seen them win 50-21, I think it was, over Jasper last week.
Off to a great start, but what's the biggest surprise to you of this Falcons team so far that you've seen? I mean, we can talk about the line play, you know, offensive and defensive lines. We can talk about the running backs, save it out to a great start, but probably for me has been the scoring, you know. We've scored 95 points in two games now, and that was something that we haven't been able to do in many years is put back-to-back games like that together where we've really put up a big number on that scoreboard.
So being able to score so far has been my biggest surprise. You know, Florence offense averaging 42 points a game. Florence defense averaging 7 points a game. They've scored twice so far, so that's important as well. Coach Kenny Morrison, Mike, he has done an excellent job, but his biggest job this week might not be during the game, but all week just keeping this team focused on the task at hand. He's a veteran coach, though. He's been there. What do you think his whole talk to the team was this week?
[5:09] You know, I think, look, Coach, being around the block a time or two, he's seen high school kids, and he knows these high school kids, and they truly are a wild card. Emotions can get high. Things can get out of control, but just keeping them at the task at hand and really discipline will be key in this game, especially for both teams, so limiting some of those silly penalties and things like that in those emotional situations, you know, and really limiting those mistakes. Coach is going to just continue to hammer down on discipline and, you know, the game at hand.
One of our great sponsors of Florence Falcons football is Lost Pizza in historic downtown Florence. They were packed out today at about 5 o'clock, first Fridays, and people come to the game, saw a lot of Florence Falcons gear, people getting a meal there, and they're going to come to the game. But Lost Pizza will be open all weekend to take care of you during this first weekend of college football. And we were there last night with the Florence Falcons for what we call Florence Falcons football night on Thursday night, a one-hour show live, and it was packed out then as well.
And before the show, I got to sit down and talk with Head Coach Kenny Morrison to find out his thoughts on tonight's games. Here are the thoughts from the Head Coach of Florence Falcons. I'm joined now by Head Coach Kenny Morrison of the Florence Falcons. And, Coach, first of all, let's rewind the first two weeks. August was really good to you. It really was. We got off to a fast start, 2-0 coming out the blocks, which was a really good start for us, something we've not done around here in a while.
So really proud of our guys for coming out after a long summer work and getting things done early. The heat this week has been quite intense, and it's going to be again Friday night. How have you handled that a little bit? Our guys have handled it really well. I mean, I think the coaches feel like we hadn't handled it great, but the players have been fine. They've moved around really well. Of course, with the temps and the heat indexes being, we have to shorten practices and, you know, had to go shorts and shells with shoulder pads instead of full gear on Tuesday.
But all in all, we've got plenty of work in it. Rivalry games, always emotional. How do you handle your team? How do you coach your team about ready for this? Just worry about us. That's the big thing is not worrying about what they've got going on, not worrying about the past record or anything related to this rivalry. You know, just trying to keep them grounded, keep them businesslike, keep them off social media, and just keep it. It's actually been a low-key week, more so with this rivalry than I've ever seen.
So it's got a little different feel to it. Not sure what that's all about just yet. Well, I think it has to do with the way the two coaches have approached it, too. So kudos to both of y'all. As we speak to Coach Kenny Marson and Coach, your team has played really well. You have to look at those three running backs. I don't know if there's a high school in the state of Alabama that's got three, that quality that could come in at any time. I hadn't seen it in my 33 years.
We've got a special group of young men in that running back room and really proud of them. And, you know, this O-line has really opened some holes for them, and they've found them, had great vision, and been explosive in those holes and finishing runs. When you look at this region, wow, it's pretty big. It is. It is. You know, we feel like this is the next one up, which is the most important one, is the next one you play. And this is a huge one to start with.
And who knows? You know, we're trying to downplay it, but this could be a region championship game. Really could. You never know early in the season like this. Let's talk about also with your fans. Your fans have been very supportive on the road. At home last week was really special. But I've got a feeling Friday night the Blue Nation will be there large and loud in New Forest. Standing room only. I look for it to be a special atmosphere. You know, I keep telling our players, you know, if you can't get up for this one, something's bad or wrong with you.
I know from the standpoint of coaches, games like this is why we got in this business. We'll walk out there, you know, 6, 6.30, and it'll be a packed house already at kickoff. It'll be electric, and it'll be a fun environment to coach in. And the players, I said, hey, you know, seize the moment. They don't come around often like this, and you've got to love to play in an environment like it's going to happen Friday night. Speaking with Coach Kenny Morrison, and Coach, I don't know if I can change my first name to Jaden, but if I could, I think I could be on the defensive unit.
Jaden Irons, Jaden White, Jaden Martinez, I believe, and three really good ones. But let's talk about Mr. Martinez, outside linebacker. He's sort of been that surprise, I think, for you this season. Really has. We've seen that growing as he's developed and grown in this program, but he took the offseason really serious, developed his body, really grew, bought into everything Coach Sledge has been doing with him, and get an opportunity to talk to Coach Sledge tonight over the radio. He's done a phenomenal job with these guys, and Martinez was one of those that we said, that guy's going to be a heck of a player for us one day, and he has really showed out this year.
Special teams are always special in games like this. Got to keep it clean, don't you? It won't be as easy as we've had it. We've played two teams that were special teams. To be perfectly honest, it's not been real good. Their long snappers have not been great. The kicking game has been an advantage for us, and I've told our guys, we're not going to get those cheap ones like we got in the first two. We're going to have to earn every one of them. They're going to be very well coached in the special teams as they are at every position across the field, so this will be one you've got to earn every bit of it.
[10:38] Coach, let's go get them. Let's go. Go Falcons. Coach Kenny Morrison of the Florence Falcons, you're listening to the TNT Fireworks Pre-Game Show. Back in one minute. This is Congressman Robert Adderholt. May God bless all of our students representing our high schools during this season, and may God bless the United States of America.
I'm Robert Adderholt, and I approve this message. Paid for by Adderholt for Congress. Welcome back to the TNT Fireworks pregame show, Florence Falcons football, 93-9 the score. Home of the Florence Falcons since 2004. Kevin Johnson, Mike Albertson, live from James F. Moore Stadium here in Muscle Shows in this big rival game between Florence and Muscle Shows, the two largest schools in northwest Alabama. Mike, let's be honest. The Trojans have dominated this rivalry for the past 10 years. Why do you think the big difference was? I mean, honestly, continuity.
I mean, Coach Basin was here for quite a while, had a lot of people bought in, you know, in this community and surrounding communities and just really brought a lot of things together for this program, really. And they've had just a tremendous amount of success over the years. And Florence, while they've had some really solid coaches and teams along the way, they just hadn't had that continuity. And Coach Morrison being here now for several years has really started to – we're starting to see what this program can be, and it really has taken hold.
Coach Michael Darden, now the new coach in his first season at Muscle Shows, but a long-time assistant here as well. So not a whole lot will change, but a few things, that's for sure. Mike, let's discuss, why does this Falcons team this year seem different than maybe years past? Yeah, in previous years, this has been an early matchup in the season as well, but the Falcons were still finding their identity in many ways during those games. This year, it feels like their identity is a little more established than in years past.
This early in the season, we've really brought some things together. You know, offensive line, defensive line play, being able to control the line of scrimmage, on both ends is super important, and we're able to do that, you know, but really, the size and strength of this Falcon team as well is really just – I mean, you could see it on the field that this is not the Falcons team of old. I agree with that. Let's welcome in our third member of the crew. He's on the sidelines most of the time, but he got here about lunch today, I think he showed up, and that's Jeffrey Jones.
JJ, how was lunch here at Muscle Shows at the stadium? Well, I'm going to be honest, I got a little anxious and arrived a little early. I had everything set up before anybody was here. I mean, it was me and a couple people, the traffic cops out there putting up cones, but, you know, in big games, you feel it, and I've been waiting on this all week, and I've just been ready to be here. I agree. It has been a big game. It's been all week, and by the way, has anyone asked you about this game this week as much as you travel?
I don't know what Coach Morrison said in that pregame interview, but I've heard nothing but hype. I've had people stop by my office. I've stopped by my customers' offices all week, and they all ask, how are we looking this week? How are we looking this week? I've been getting texts, a little bit of trash talk from my friends over at Muscle Shoals on Facebook, Instagram, that sort of thing. You know, it's always fun. You know, these communities are so, so similar, and we all do business together.
You know, we all know each other. Our kids are all friends. You know, some of my daughter's friends, first friends she ever had are Muscle Shoals kids. And so, you know, we're not that far apart. Now, sometimes it seems like that river is real wide and deep, but, you know, when I walk through the crowd here going down to the field and whatnot, I see more people over here and ask them, like, what are you doing over here? You're supposed to be a Florence Falcon. What's up with you?
Yeah, it's been a good week. A lot of, in my opinion, a lot of hype. You know, I've seen a bunch of videos on Facebook on the Muscle Shoals side and the Florence side. Just lots of chitter-chatter and lots of talk. That's for sure. By the way, just to interrupt for a minute, but the Florence Falcons have been out warming up here, but the Muscle Shoals Trojans did not warm up out here. I wonder if they warmed up indoors because it's senior night, so maybe they decided to warm up indoors and get things stretched out and do that.
[15:38] That's a very real possibility. I thought that they were just showing up late, but you're right. We have not seen. When I got here at 3.30 this afternoon, I did see the kicker out there kicking field goals, but other than that, I haven't seen a single Muscle Shoals Trojan on the field. There are 43 minutes from kickoff. Yeah, senior night is coming up, so I would dare say in their indoor facility, they were stretched and warmed up tonight, so that's their kudos to them for that. Jeffrey, last week a lot of things were happening at Brawley Stadium for a home opener.
There was a lot of moving parts, and yet when it all came down to it, the Florence team handled business and then some. Last week was probably one of the most proud moments I've had in years as a Florence Falcon. It was an outstanding night. We got to honor the Anderson family, naming the field, Charles C. Anderson Jr. Field. Just an outstanding week last week, and you know what? The best part was we topped off with a win. An exciting, you know, dominant performance. You know, that score was a lot closer than what the game really was, and it feels good to have a, you know, we did, it was 7-6 at one time.
That is our first time we trailed this year, but we took control and didn't look back. But, yeah, last week was probably one of the more proud moments I've had. I can't, the last time I had that feeling was at the Final Four in Burringham. Yeah, that's a good comparison, really good comparison right there. So we speak with Jeffrey Jones, sideline colleague here on 93-9 score for Florence Falcons football. And, J.J., across the way, it is a sea of blue already and getting even bigger.
Crowds tonight could play a factor. You know, rarely does your road crowd play such a factor, but, boy, it could be a big factor tonight. I've said it time and time again. The Falcons, the Falcon nation travels well. We do. We travel to Birmingham well. We travel over to Huntsville very well. And there's no exception tonight. We know that this is probably going to be one of the higher listening broadcasts we have of the year, but it's also going to be one of the larger crowds we play in front of this year.
You know, everyone wants to see what these Falcons, these 2-0 Falcons, are about. And, you know, some of the hype this week has been a little subdued from Muscle Shoals because they haven't played a 2-0 Florence team in a long time. And they didn't play last week either. They only had one game under the belt. They lost to Hoover. It's an exciting time. So it'll be a big game tonight. Well, by the way, you can download the 93.9 The Score app on your phone, on your computer, wherever.
A lot of people download it on their phone. They go to ballgames, maybe not here or here or somewhere else. And they listen to the Falcons, and so we're glad that you do that. And all across the world, we had people last week listening in two or three different countries, and I'm listening up north, out west, all across the state of Alabama. Thank you for listening on the app on 93.9 The Score to our broadcast last week. And one reason we have such a great broadcast week in and week out for Florence Falcons is because in the 93.9 The Score studios, we have the best of the best bringing us updates there in our studio engineers, our studio host tonight, James Moody Blair Crueger.
Guys, I'll let you take it away. Thank you, Kevin. Yes, we will be following a whole lot of games. We had some games last night. D.A.R.B. Asbury, 62-14. Athens beats East Limestone, 41-7. Fort Payne over Lee, 37-7. And the streak is over. Mae Jemison beats Columbia, 42-14. That was last night. Also tonight, Braves and Phillies, that important series. Right now the Braves lead the Phillies 3-1 in the second inning, so we'll be keeping track of that for you. Games tonight, including but not limited to Decatur and Austin.
Also, Spartman, Gaston City, Russellville Hartzell, Grissom Huntsville, Bob Jones, James Clemens, Dashler Lawrence County, Calvert Heights, Lauderdale County, Lexington Phil Campbell, Phillips Red Bay, Elkmont, Rogers, J.B. Pennington, Sheffield, Lindsay Lane, and Schultz Christian are going at it. Brooks and Wes Morgan, Mars Hill, Westbrook, Christian, Central Wilson. Also, Tennessee scores, Mississippi scores, the aforementioned Braves, and also Oklahoma UTEP, Miami Stanford, Fresno State, USC. We'll be keeping track of all those and join us tonight after the broadcast during the statewide scoreboard show. Now back to the stadium for more of the pregame show.
Thank you, James Moody and our 93.9 score studios. Jeffrey Jones, before he walked away, said, hey, make sure you mention the Muscle Shoals hospitality has been great. They've taken care of us with waters and stuff. So we appreciate that as well, James. It hadn't always been this way, but, you know, I think we've been at our fences a little bit, and the radio crew gets along with the Muscle Shoals press box very well these days. We are very thankful. They have been very hospitable to us. Very hospitable, that is for sure.
Mike, Muscle Shoals had an off week, two weeks to prepare for Florence and heal from a Hoover loss. But, you know, honestly, on the way over here, we were talking. You had a great thought about this. What is the advantage for Muscle Shoals being a week off or maybe the advantage for Florence? I mean, really and truly, this early in the season, having an off week, it doesn't really necessarily help you in that second week. You know, I think there's something to be said for being in game shape and really dealing with the heat and all that other fun stuff during these games.
It usually takes to about the second or, you know, towards the two or three full games before these guys are fully in game shape and everything. So maybe taking off that week wasn't necessarily an advantage. It might be an advantage for extra time in the film room or scheming some things. But really, I mean, this early in the season, I don't think it's such a huge advantage. A big thank you to Garner Pierce Auto for the courtesy vehicles this season. Great folks at Garner Pierce Auto.
[21:02] Tell them that KJ sent you that way. That's Garner Pierce Auto, Florence Boulevard in Florence. Let's welcome in our statistician, our good friend, John McDaniel. J-Mac, how are you doing this week, bud? Man, doing well. Glad to be here. Good to see you, my friend. And 45 and 50 points in the first two weeks kept you pretty busy, I'm sure. You know, that's good problems. Those are great problems. The Falcons have been playing really as good offensively as I can remember. This is my 10th year, and that's as dynamic between the first two games as I've seen them.
I mean, currently we're averaging about 387 yards total offense and almost 350 yards a game rushing. So our guys are producing and they're scoring. Mike mentioned it earlier about how prolific the offense has been. And hopefully it's something that they can keep up. I agree with that. I can't remember a team in my – it has to go back a long way. And I've been watching high school football for a long time. They had three running backs that were so electric. But also, this staff has done a good job of learning how to share the football with them.
That's not always easy to do. Well, it's certainly not. It's certainly when you've got upperclassmen, lowerclassmen, and the carries are being divided. They're doing a great job. For example, last week, DeCarson had approximately 11 carries. Elijah had 10 carries. And then Kion had 6 carries. So they're getting quite almost an even distribution. And certainly when they put two backs on the field, it makes it – both are dynamic and both can go to the distance. It makes it extremely hard to key in on one guy. And they're doing a good job so far of keeping everybody engaged, not feeling like they're just getting the leftovers.
I agree with that. So we speak with John McDaniel, our statistician. John, you know, Muscle Shoals has won this game 10 straight. How does Florence staff help team overcome the mental side of this? Or is it a mental side even? You know, that's a tricky question. There's really kind of two schools you can either, you know, talk about, you know, we're not going to – we're going to break the streak this year. You know, you can focus on they've already lost, they haven't actually won a game so far.
Or you can just not mention it. And just – because a lot of these kids, you know, at most they've played them three times. Yeah. A lot of them really have only played them maybe twice, so they don't have 10 years' worth of losing. They've only got a couple of games. So I think really, as Coach said, in this example, I think just focusing on them, really, there's not a whole lot of film on them. One game barely, and there's not a lot of plays to take from.
I think they really just kind of left it alone and just said, we're going to go play and see what happens. Yeah, Kenny Marson, the head coach at Florence, that's not when I brought it up. He sort of changed the subject and said, that's not a big deal to us. And, you know, it's sort of like the rankings. It don't mean anything to Mike. It don't mean anything to Kenny. So we'll just go and say, hey, let's just go play the game. Spot the ball, as they say.
He's looking forward to that as well. By the way, the athletic director at Florence High School, Coach Myra Miles, got to interview her last night. Tremendous, tremendous interview and a tremendous hire, obviously, for Florence High School. So excited to have her on staff and on board leading the Falcons in many ways. And she reminded me, as she's listening in to us, actually, she said, hey, I know you're talking about all the hospitality there, but I want to say the administration and staff here at Muscle Shoals has been first class, too.
So kudos to them. So it's good, as Martin Jeffrey said, to see that friendly rivalry. That's the way you want it to be. And the friendly rivalry, we'll get after it here in a little bit. Shout out to our good friends at Lost Pizza. Florence, tonight, listening to our broadcast, may I recommend the Yardbird. I hear somebody on our crew here really likes that Yardbird. So I'd recommend that. Lost Pizza, they'll satisfy your taste coming up this weekend, I guarantee you, in historic downtown Florence. Countdown to kickoff of Florence Falcons football continues.

The Falcons are off the way going to the dressing room. J.J., are you close to the head coach yet?
[26:36] He's not. He's actually talking to Carl Prather right now at WFF. I'm about to break up the party, though. No, that's okay. I mean, he's on television. You were built for radio, J.J. You were not built for TV. Remember that? I hear that all the time. Yeah, that's why we had you. I don't understand what that means. I can see I understand it. We'll send it down to J.J. now. He has the head coach with you. Hey, coach. About what we expected for the night.
Good crowd. Weather's a little chilly tonight, isn't it? Love it. Football weather. Yeah, it is. So, heard all the hype all week, rivalry week. You know, players, they seem pretty focused, though, right? Guys are locked in. They've been businesslike since they got to the locker room earlier this morning. And fed them a big breakfast this morning, came back, did some walk-throughs after the pep rally kind of stuff. And, boy, they've been super focused. We'll see. We know that with Muscle Shoals, we know what we're getting.
We play them every year. We know that their defense is really good. You know, but we've got a three-headed monster in the backfield, too. Are we going to just rely on them, or are we going to throw it around a little bit? We're going to just get in the flow of the game. Coach McGuire's going to call one heck of a game. We'll see how it unfolds. You know, sometimes when you say we're going to run it 40 times and control it, that way, and it ends up you throwing it 20 times.
So we just see how the game unfolds. We want to keep the chains moving first downs and get the ball in the end zone. I know you're all prepared. You're all prepared for this weather being 95 degrees, and it's a little cooler than that. Is that going to play to our advantage a little bit? No, I think it's going to be the same for both teams. We brought some fans, Mr. Fans, to try to cool the guys off. Shouldn't need them. I mean, we've been at hotter places so far, and we hadn't used them, really.
So we're just going to go play the game. Good luck, Coach. Let's go get them. Thank you. Jeffrey Jones with an excellent interview with head coach Kenny Morrison there and Mike Albertson. You can see here the energy in his voice. He's ready. He's fired up a little bit. Absolutely, and why not? You know, he knows that he has shared with us that of all the years, he feels like this team is as equipped as any to go up against this Muscle Shoals team and really make a run throughout this year.
So he's really super excited. He's been that way all year long. We've had that three-headed monster run in the first two games. But, Mike, there's a fourth guy that can run that football that we haven't talked a whole lot about, and we've sort of protected him. But if need be, he can get a few yards for you. And that's the quarterback, Costa Mahan. What do you think about him tonight? Yeah, I think he's going to be tested more than he has the first two weeks, that's for sure.
But, you know, in that, playing in this matchup, crosstown rival, you know, all the emotions high. This is, so far in his career, his biggest start. And, you know, so, but we've talked about his demeanor already. He's used to the big moment and used to those big spots, you know, through his athletics life. So, you know, he's just going to be stepping into this and just doing the best that he can. But he will be asked to do things, more things, tonight than he's been asked to so far this year.
John McDaniel, our statistician. Jay Mack, you've played linebacker for many years. Florence defense will face a much different offense this week than they did the first two weeks. Yeah, you know, in some ways they will. They kind of opened it up a little bit more. They have a few wide receivers. I think it will be a little bit similar to last week with the quarterback run. They have a new quarterback who's a new transfer, Lincoln Smothers, in his first year here. They've got a few wide receivers that seem to be really good.
Pritchard, who we've played several times now, and he's a terrific athlete. Also, Jay Shod Sample, he's new. He's a former Calvert County Indian that's a big body wide receiver that match up problems. So I think it will, in some ways, it will be similar. But they're very quick. I think if we're not sound as far as where we are defensively, if we're not in our gaps, or if we overrun, they are certainly fast enough to exploit that. They did it a few times against Hoover last week.
They took some short passes and took them for touchdowns. So it's going to be a test. Certainly, we've been building. First week against Pinson, then Jasper was a better team, and this is by far going to be the best team that we've played. So this is going to be a real good test to see, hey, what do the Falcons have? Smothers' dad is a coach and has come back here from Jasper to be on the staff here. His brother used to be quarterback here, went on to play at Nebraska and at Jacksonville State.
And so Lincoln is a senior. He'll actually have a younger brother as well, I believe, that plays wide receiver as well. The Smothers' boys, ironically, as I said, come here from Jasper, a team that Florence played last week. So that'll be a big matchup to see as well. It is senior night here for Muscle Shoals High School. They have a lot of senior players and band members and cheerleaders as well to be recognized. So they're recognizing them in the first game, a home game for them of the season.
Muscle Shoals coach Michael Darden in his first season. He's 0-1 on the season after their loss to Hoover a couple of weeks ago. He follows his mentor, Scott Basin, who was 170 and 50. What a career for Scott Basin at Muscle Shoals. By the way, a note, do you all know who was the Muscle Shoals coach? J.J., I'm bringing you in this. You know who the Muscle Shoals coach was before Coach Basin? Anybody know? Curly Hallman, the former LSU coach. Former LSU coach was the one that preceded Coach Basin.
[32:04] That gives you a kickback on how long Coach Basin was here, by the way. The last time I saw Curly Hallman coaching a game, it was against Auburn with three interceptions returned for touchdowns. Actually, it was four, but I wanted to correct you on that one. But War Eagle to you, buddy. I like it. Brown Robinson's was the best one. Dale McGee had a good one, too. Sink him, J.J., sink him. It was good. Kenny Marson in his fifth season at Florence, 28-19 now at Florence High School.
He has a state title under his belt from Fayetteville High School in Tennessee. He's brought continuity. He's brought the program to where he wants it, and you sense it, and hopefully things are going in the right direction right now as they're 2-0 on the season so far. Florence and Muscle Shoals have met 15 times. This will be the 15th time they've played each other. Muscle Shoals leads the series 10-4. Last year, Muscle Shoals won it 34-7. As I said earlier, the Trojans fell in the opener. They fell 14-8 on the road to start the season.
Florence, meanwhile, has wins over Pinson Valley and Jasper to go to 2-0. When we come back, we'll continue our way to kickoff. You're listening to the TNC Fireworks Pre-Game Show. Learn more at NABJC.com As a young fan of the Auburn Tigers, I watched Iron Bowl after Iron Bowl and always saw my Tigers fall short. In 1972, I was just five years old when the Tigers beat Alabama 17-16. But then for the next 10 straight years, I watched my team fall to the Crimson Tide year after year. Finally, the year 1982 came along, and that year I remember Auburn fans had more than hoped to win, they had belief.
And sure enough, with the help of Bo over the top, I finally saw a 10-year losing streak come to a close to our biggest rival. The past 10 years, this high school rivalry of Florence vs. Muscle Shoals has been one-sided as well. Not since 2015 have the Falcons won their rivalry on the field. Year after year, there was hope that the boys of blue from Florence could pull it off, but every year the Trojans had the upper hand. The only thing Falcons could say is we would hope next year would be different.
But 2026 seems to continue to bring changes from years past. With that, you can add to the list the Florence Falcons football team. The 2026 Falcons have steamrolled to an impressive 2-0 start with wins over Pinson Valley and Jasper. Now there is a new word growing in the city of Florence concerning this Falcons team. The word is believe. This year, fans are not just hopeful for a Falcons win in this rivalry. They believe the Falcons will win. When hope is replaced with belief, it changes the storyline often.
The Florence Falcons over the past few years have peaked at the end of the season, but always seem to start slow. However, this year's Falcons team has started fast, and yet they haven't even come close to reaching their potential. What is different about this Falcons team than years past? One word. Believe. This team believes in their head coach who has brought continuity. A belief in the system that will win games. A belief that on any Friday night, the Falcons will fly high. This team is not just hopeful tonight.
[37:20] They truly believe. Now after two games, the city of Florence is starting to believe as well. And if the Falcons play like they are capable, I believe the streak will come to an end tonight. By the time we cross the river, I have a feeling the Falcons will have a lot more people believing in them as well. Florence Falcons football, it starts right now. Welcome back to Florence Falcons football, TNT fireworks pregame show, 93-9 to score. It is beginning to be a really packed house across the way and on Muscle Show side too for their home opener and senior night for Florence and Muscle Shows.
And we're glad to be with you and, you know, it's going to be a good one tonight. Mike, the first thing I think about really when I think about this game is this is such a big game, but now it's a region game. And that's a big part of this too. Yeah, absolutely. And to open up your region against your crosstown rival and a team that you have not had much success against over the last several years. This is a big one for Florence and especially, you know, with those region implications on the line.
Jeffrey Jones on the sideline, probably in front of a fan over there somewhere. The early 2-0 start has actually been good for Florence, but the student body at school this week have they been fired up. When your team wins like that, doesn't it help your school? Well, so my wife, who is an insider at the house school, she knows a little bit more than I do about it. She told me that the tone is set by how well the football team does for the whole year.
It just sets the tone for the year. It just improves morale, improves attitude. And, you know, some kids, they want to stay out of trouble so they can either play on Friday night or even attend the games on Friday night. So they shape up and act right. You know, you can feel it, you know, with these kids, though, sometimes you've got to temper the excitement. You've got to be able to tell them, hey, you haven't won on the field. You've won twice on the field, but you've got a big game coming up this week.
And don't think that Muscle Shoals isn't preparing for y'all like y'all are preparing for them. That leads me to my next question, to Mike Albertson, and that's the Muscle Shoals defense. They've had a reputation for a while, and especially in this game the past few years. Oh, absolutely. You know, Muscle Shoals is a definite formidable opponent. They've been really tough, you know, on the field. They've made deep playoff runs, and they have athletes all over the field. So, like, it's not a surprise. The last three years, Florence has scored 7-13-0.
So not just much, by the way of offense, but I will remind everybody, early in the season when we do have these matchups. The Florence offense generally isn't established pretty well until they really start area play. Now, this being an area game, let's hope that offense clicks. That's well put there, Mike, and I agree with that as well. And, John, Florence secondary, they will be tested once again. They were tested a little bit last week. They better get prepared for a whole lot more of that.
They're going to have to do a much better job. You know, they have several wide receivers, as you mentioned, the Smothers, the starting quarterback, has a younger brother, Ledger. He's one of their starting wide receivers. And between, they are not really selective. If they have a big down, they're going to throw it to number one. They kind of move him around. And he usually winds up outside. If he lines up in the slot, they're going to try to throw it to him. But they will throw to all three wide receivers.
And a little bit of difference, they look for some underneath stuff and try to take it deep. So, our guys are going to have to cover well. But I think the Achilles heel could be our blitzes if we can get home to the quarterback. They gave up a lot of pressure against Hoover. The Falcons can emulate that. They can force mistakes. There, too. Muscle shows two biggest receivers, J-shot samples. And Christian Pritchard, as well, wears number two. He's an outstanding athlete. He'll play both ways tonight.
That could be a factor, as well. Jeff on the sideline, get you one more thing. Florence has shown to be an opportunistic as a team. Taking advantage of those turnovers when they need to so far. Yeah. Just scored on defense both games so far. I expected at least one score by the defense tonight. They've just set the expectation for that. So, therefore, I don't think that's too much to ask. But, yeah, as far as getting opportunities, with Florence in the past, we haven't capitalized on great opportunities like we should.
This year so far, we have. I don't want to jinx us or anything like that. But, you know, you've got to take advantage of the opportunities. And most of the shows, we know who we're playing. They're not going to make a lot of mistakes. We're going to be fortunate to have one or more turnovers tonight. They just don't turn over that much. So, we've got to play good, fundamental, sound football. We know that they're going to. That offense that they run is pretty confusing, you know, if you're not prepared for it.
And I've seen many teams come in here, Florence and otherwise, that we're not prepared for that offense. Let's look at the potential starting lineup for the Florence Florence Falcons here. If the Falcons are getting ready to take on the Trojans, this is potential starting lineup. Let's start with that offensive line. Jacob Harper, the center, 5'11", 245. Where's number 57, only a junior? He'll be joined by Draymore at one position at right guard, 5'10", 255, a senior. And on the other side, Armani Hernandez, 5'11", 270, a junior. The outside, Orlando Rounds will get the start tonight at tackle.
[42:40] He'll wear a number 65, Orlando Rounds. It'll be on the right tackle position. On the left tackle position will be Raymond Russell, 6'1", 280, and only a sophomore. The outside receivers, just pick ones you want to see. But I think Nelson Elliott will be out there in the age. So, started off 6'1", 170. He is a senior. Also, you'll have out there Sullivan Haddock, 6'3", 170, senior, wears number 80. Kibante Green has been getting a lot of play in time. 6'3", 220, the senior who has looks, or already offers, excuse me, from North Alabama and also Troy.
And then, obviously, you'll have in the slots tonight, and that is J.C. Goolsby, John Carter Goolsby, 5'11", 165, senior. Those wide receivers, you can go 4'6", 7", deep, Mike. Yeah, they certainly can, and I would expect to see a myriad of Falcons out there tonight. You know, you might even see a number 15, Tripp Morris. That's right. You may be able to see him out there tonight and things like that. So, this Falcon wide receiver, that wide receiver crew there is about as long as it's been here in Florence.
And Tripp Morris really had a good summer in 707s. He's a sophomore, 6'3", 180, wears number 15. He can run. He is a go-to receiver, so keep an eye on Tripp Morris for Florence tonight. On the running backs, there are three just really good running backs. We can't say enough about them, and they continue to impress. Tonight will be their biggest test. We'll start with Elijah Hines, the junior. Wears number three, 5'9", 160, he's a slasher. He has great ability, Mike, to cut back against the grain. He certainly does.
He has great vision, is able to really make some guys miss with his cutting ability. And then, once he finds some open space, he's pretty dangerous as well. DeCarson Johnson, the senior, he wears number zero, the goose egg. He's the goose on this running back group. He's 5'10", 175, and Johnson has one of those. He can break tackles and break tackles. But, you know, the thing that's caught me off guard, he has great speed. He certainly does. You know, all these Falcon running backs, when they get out into space, they could really outrun pretty much a lot of these teams.
So, when he gets out there, he runs with a lot of strength. But once he hits that second gear, look out, because he could be looking for six. Kayon Williams is the sophomore. Wears number 10, 5'10", 180, a sophomore. I think what Mike said last week might have been the best part of it. There was a couple of runs. He said, this is video game-like. He has the ability to pull any tool out of the bag at any time, and as such a youngster, he has it. It's impressive.
He certainly does. He's been able to spin off some tackles, been able to make guys miss, a couple juke moves here and there. Like, he's really got some nice footwork going. To be such a young back, you don't see that very often. Costa Mahan, the quarterback, 6'2", 225, sophomore. We will be counting on him a lot tonight. He's got to play a really smart game and a really big game. Watch Mahan to have a big game for the Falcons tonight. Parker Greenhall is the kicker and the punter.
He is a senior, number 81. He's done outstanding so far. His name will be called a lot tonight as well. Tonight, Florence and Muscle Shoals meet for the first time as region opponents. Since 2017, and this might be the only time they meet. This might not be, I should say, might not be the only time they meet this season. Two really good teams who could see each other later on down the stretch. Would not be surprised. Again, a big shout-out to Garner Pierce Auto. Our vehicle is provided in away games by Garner Pierce Auto.
They'll take care of you as well. That's Garner Pierce Auto in Florence. When we come back, we'll count down to kickoff. Continues TNT fireworks pre-game. Show on 93.9 to score. Back in one minute. We're here on the Muscle Shoals press box.
[47:46] So great crowds, what it should be for a high school rivalry that only separates by about five miles. You know, Mike, when you look at this game tonight, you start to think about how these two teams come together and everything. I think one of the things you have to think about is games like this, small mistakes, can become a lot larger than usual. Oh, absolutely. You know, the little things do matter. And over the course of time, you know, we've seen a lot of football. And sometimes those little mistakes turn into big plays next.
You know, a chippy play here, you know, a little shot after the whistle. You know, you get 15 yards and the whole complexion of the game can change. So, you know, keeping your emotions in check and really staying disciplined is going to be huge here. But, you know, just like that, anything can happen when these two teams come together. I think playing with emotion but not being emotional is the key. And that's what Kenny Marson has preached to his team this week. And John McDaniel, Muscle Shoals may have lost, but it was to Hoover.
And we all know how good Hoover is from a year in and year out. So, when two teams with swagger meet like we do tonight, then what becomes the difference in it when you have two teams coming in here, both believing they can win the game? I didn't have Kevin Johnson with Nick Saban quotes in my bingo card, but I like that. Actually, Nick Saban had Kevin Johnson quotes. I came up with the verse. I want you to know that. Googling. Yeah. You're right. Both teams come in flying high.
Muscle Shoals has always kind of had the – they have a 10-year edge on us, so they have definitely had the confidence and the swagger. But the Falcons are coming in the undefeated team. They have played two games. They have looked really good in two games. They should be at an all-time high of confidence. I'm sure Kenny, as he focuses on the team, pumping out, hey, this is what we're doing well. Here's what we can work on to get a little better. And I think he's really pouring into them this week.
Hey, if we come out and play our game, we'll win. Yeah. We're the – we – I think if you match it up player for player, I think we're the better team. I think we have more good players. It's coming out and putting it all together and playing to, as we say, the standard. Play to the best you can play every play. And don't let the scoreboard, if it's close, come into play. Here at Muscle Shows, they're getting ready for the national anthem. You're listening to the TNT Fireworks pregame show.

Welcome back to the TNT Fireworks pre-game show, Florence Falcons football. We're about, we'll say, less than 10 minutes away from kickoff of this Florence Muscle Show's game, and I mean, they're still filing in left and right. As far as the eye can see, across the way, I look, and there's a line of blue and white still waiting to come into the gates. So a tremendous crowd here for Florence, and the same with Muscle Show's, a big crowd here for them as well. And, you know, it's exciting right now.
[52:47] Jeffrey Jones on the sideline, quickly, what is just a quick update on the weather forecast right now, everything out there? JJ is not with us right now, so we'll check on him. You may not can hear us, actually. He was having a very important conversation with a person in his life. Oh, okay. That would be good. I'm sorry. I know you came to me. I was, yes, that's exactly right. That's all right. Well, hey, you know what? You're doing the best job you're supposed to be doing.
That's being a dad, so good job there. I like that. Captain's coming out here. JJ, real quick, just no rain here today. We didn't talk about it. It rained in Florence. They had no rain here at the stadium. It was shocking. You know, I didn't expect the rain. No, you didn't either. It was all of a sudden I went home to change clothes, and it started raining in my neighborhood, and I was like, hmm, this might cool things off, and it did. So, it's a good thing that a little front came through, you know, cooled it off just enough, you know, and I think that Muscle Shoals, it surprised them, too, because they warmed up inside, so we hadn't seen a Muscle Shoals football player yet, except for these captains that are walking out from them.
Captains for the Florence Falcons. Chase Winkles, I believe, is one of the captains, along with Otis Sistrunk, Kevante Green, and I can't catch the one. I think it's Orlando Rounds, number 65, that's out there. The Falcons in their road white pants, white jerseys, blue numerals, blue lettering, and blue helmets. Muscle Shoals in all black. The Trojans captains coming out as well. Christian Pritchard leading them out here to well. And, you know, just four captains for each team. It's going to be a fun matchup. This is what high school football is supposed to be like.
The big blue bands here, they're playing loud across the way. Fans excited about it. Students excited about it. Radio crews excited about it. Teams excited about it. We hope you are as well. This is going to be a great game in Class 5A football tonight. Let's send it down to Jeffrey Jones as the captains meet one another. Have a good game. Shaking hands with the Falcons and the Trojans. All right, guys, y'all captains. Sportsmanship, all right? Y'all taking control of y'all's team? Y'all taking control of y'all's team, all right?
Heads. What do you call them? Tails. He's calling Tails, all right? If I drop it, we'll do it again. It's Tails. Defer to second half. Bo Berski won the toss, and we're going to defer. Bo Berski is the captain. He got the toss right. Defer to the second half. Falcons will be on defense. It's time for the river rivalry. Get ready, folks. It's here. Florence and Muscle Shoes. Here's the voice of the Florence Falcons. For the Falcons, Kevin Johnson. Need I say more? Gorgeous night. High school football. First region game of the year. And it's your rival from across the river. Florence on the road to the south side of the Tennessee River to take on Muscle Shoals. Florence will kick it off to start the game. They're wearing the road white, trimmed in blue. Muscle Shoals will be receiving wearing all black, trimmed in white letters, white numbers, and trimmed in a little bit of red there.
Coach Michael Darden in his first season. Coach Michael Darden in his first season for the Falcons. His first season… Our fifth season, excuse me, for the Falcons. Christian Pritchard, always dangerous back. It stands at the 10. Samples will be at the 10 as well. Green Hall will boot it away. I think, Jeffrey, the flag's showing maybe a little wind behind his back. Would you agree? Yes. I expect this to go in the end zone. I hope it does. I'm not a big fan of kicking to Pritchard off the…
[58:00] I guess we're on a NCAA, NFL type of sitting because the officials are watching the crop kick down at 140. They're ready. The teams are ready. But the officials haven't moved from the 50-yard line. But, J.J., you're right in front of that student section. My goodness, are they loud over there from Florence. J.J., I don't know if you can hear them. Yeah, they are. When the team ran out, I turned my mic on so y'all could hear it. They are very loud and very ready.
The student section, I haven't seen it this large in a long time. Not for an away game. Very few open seats on the visiting side. That's right. This will be standing room only pretty soon. Mike Albertson, keys to tonight's game for the Florence Falcons. Really and truly, I think it's being able to control that line of scrimmage on both offensive and defensive sides. If we're able to do that, we're going to control the pace of the game. John McDaniel, what one player maybe or two players on Florence we need to keep an eye on?
Let's see. I'm going to go with number 15. He's going to be in his first game. Tripp Morris might just provide enough spark. The wide receiving core spreading out their defense, not letting them key in on one. They're on their feet at James F. Moore Stadium. Oh, high school football in Alabama on a Friday night. Does it get any better? Oh, my goodness. Chill bumps across the way and here, too. Greenhall to boot it away. Welcome to September and welcome to region football. Finally, the whistle blows and Greenhall will approach the ball and gets a good foot into it.
High but short. Going to be taken at the 15 by Pritchard. Got to run room to 20, 25. And oh, he's stuck at the 30. Oh, Dez came up and tattooed him. And that's where the Trogs will have it first and 10 at the 30. Let's pause for station identification. This is Falcon football. The voice of the Florence High School Falcons. WYTK-FM. Rogersville. Athens. Decatur. The Shoals. 93-9. The score. First and 10. They'll give him the 30, well, call it the 31-yard line. Going right to left as you listen. We're on the Muscle Shoals' side.
Florence in the road, white. Smothers the quarterback for the Trojans. We'll have it first. With one back in the backfield. Two wide receivers. He'll bring a man in motion. Going to leave it with samples. And he's hit in the backfield. Gets away from one. Tries to get back to the line of scrimmage. Leaps over defender and is brought down hard by Jay Nirens after a game of two. Somebody had a chance at him in the backfield, but it blowed up the play a little bit. Already from right off the first snap, you're going to see what this is all about.
This is pure effort by both teams right there, laying it all on the line that very first play. If that's just a little piece of what we have in store, buckle up, folks. This is awesome. Reynolds is the back behind the quarterback, Lincoln Smothers, on the second-down seven. Reynolds off the left side, coming to the short side, looking for room. Gets across the 35 and knocked out of bounds around the 37. We're going to bring up third down, and we'll call it about four to go. That's a little soft, Kevin, but that's how you want to play.
You want to pick every guy in the line. You notice they just had a wall moving towards the sideline, and he had nowhere to go except out of bounds. They ran to the short side of the field. Use that to your advantage if you're a defense, is what John is saying. The Trojans have to touch the 41. They're at the 37. On third and four play, and listen across the way, the Falcon crowd has been loud. Two wideouts to the right. Smothers and Pritchett to the right. Samples to the left.
Quarterback now in shotgun formation. Going to play action. Roll to the right. Look to throw the quick out. Complete at the 42-43. Got the first down to his brother, and that is enough to move this change for the first time tonight. As he hits, Ledger smothers the junior for the first down right at the 49-yard line. That was a nice design play there by Muscle Shoals. Found a little weak point in our defense. Got it behind the sticks. Completed that pass and gained a few yards after that catch.
It was a well-executed play. Reynolds still the tailback, I believe, on this first down play at the 49. Just underway here, 11-07 and counting in the first quarter. Muscle Shoals, though, has got a first down out to midfield. Now to the left of the quarterback is Reynolds. Everybody comes to the left side. Looked to throw the quick out to the left and got it to Reynolds. He balanced it and couldn't catch it. He caught it in the air. Actually juggled it, and he's brought down for a gain of two.
He juggled that and juggled that. I thought it went down, but he caught it after juggling about two or three times and ended up with three yards. Yeah, that was a tough play there. He looked to turn upfield before he caught that one and then had to concentrate on the ball. Had some room, but those juggles, the Florence defense was able to come in and clean that up. You see a lot of quick plays getting the ball out of the hands, a lot of waggles, those type of things.
The respect for the Florence defense is there, but it's a good game plan. Second down and seven. In Falcon territory at the 48 are the Trojans. Smothers the quarterback shotgun formation with one back Reynolds behind him. Now he checks the play again. He looks back, play clock coming down, Falcons show blitz. They're going to leave it with Reynolds on the inside, and he falls down. And that blitz was right where it was, and he was looking, and Winkle said, no, no, no, no gain. It'll bring up third down and eight.
[1:03:18] Yeah, that play kind of blew up right away. The Falcons were in the backfield. He had the cut-up field, lost his footing, and Winkle's cleaned it up nicely. John, if you're at Florence here, we haven't seen a lot of screen passes, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some type of screen or something quick. They like to get it in their playboy's hands. Yeah, you're right. They like to do their underneath. We've got a timeout for the Falcons. Couldn't get the players off the field. Timeout by the Falcons.
We'll do the same. 947 to go on the first. This is Falcon Football. We're back in 30. Hello. No representation is made that the quality of legal services to be performed is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers. Welcome back, Florence Falcons football just underway, no score. Florence, Muscle Shoals scoreless, as I said, but Muscle Shoals has the ball in Falcons territory at the 49, but they're facing a third and eight play. Samples will go wide to the right. The tight end, Ludington, is in there as well. Got to keep an eye on him. He wears number 11. Now Pritchard would go to the slot to the right.
The other Smothers brother, Ledger, comes to the left for quarterback Lincoln Smothers. Four-man front for Florence. Gets the snout. Play action. Wants to throw. Steps in the pocket. Across the middle. Intercepted by Winkles. Picked it off at the 45 to the 50. Coming down the left side on the 40. To the 35. To the 30. Shows great speed. Stays on his feet. To the 20. And inside the 20 to the 18. Chase Winkles with the first big play of the day. That was a great job there by the Falcon defense. Got Smothers to release that ball.
Winkles right in the path of where the wide receiver was. Jumped that route and a beautiful return afterwards. Great job seeing that convoy of Falcons running down the field. May have a flag on the play on the return. Let's see. A flag on the play. It's silent interference. Silent interference. That's going to be a warning, correct? It depends if he hit a player or a coach. It could be a penalty. That's what they're discussing now. He hit a coach. He hit a coach, not the radio guy.
Coach Kenny Marson barking out saying, wait, you've got to watch this. But the ball is intercepted. Are they saying it's a first down on that? There's no way. It should have been after the possession. No, it's way after the possession. If it's not after the possession, we've got a problem. So it is against Florence. But I do believe Florence will have the football. It will negate the long run back, unfortunately. Are they coming off the field, though? I don't know what's happening. Yeah, they're coming off the field.
The defense is coming on, I believe. Let's check that. The Muscle Shoals offense is coming on. Have they said that was pre? There's no way. And Kenny Marson is living. No, it was in the run back. I watched it happen. It was in the run back. This is number one. At the 18, they're going to mark it off against Florence. And they're going to give Muscle Shoals the ball. No, our offense is the one in the field. Okay. So Florence offense will come onto the field. Have me a little confused there.
First and 10 at the 33 after the penalty. We'll let it all short. Sometimes it's best just to wait and see who comes out. That's what we found out now. So first and 10 at the 33. Coach, they got the change wrong. They got them going the wrong direction over there. Not going to say anything, J.J., but they got to get the change right. First and 10 at the 33 for Florence. Inside Gibbs, scooting far, got a running rim. Spins this Williams down to the 25. Give him eight on the carry.
He's electric, and he showed it right there. He stuck his foot in the turf, pulled upfield, just explosive through that line. Made a guy miss through a spin move to pick up an extra couple yards for an eight-yard carry. That's awesome. DeCarson Johnson into the game with the second down play. Green and Elliott to the right. Goolsby to the left on second down and two against a four-man front. Now in motion comes Goolsby. Going to leave it. No, going to look to throw it. Exposed it in the middle.
Complete to Green. Caught it at the 15. Runs over defender and down to the 14. Nice job by Costin to Mahan, and I like that, Mike, because it gets him in the groove a little bit. Absolutely. It had a nice big target there by Kevante Green. Hit him right on the numbers there. Nice easy pass, and Kevante delivered a blow to the defender to pick up a couple extra yards in that first down. Nice read there by Costin, too. He had two or three receivers, but he threw it right in the gap.
To the left of the quarterback, Mahan, is Johnson in the first and 10 play at the 14. Falcons driving after the Winkle's interception. Play action. Look to throw. Again, went to the inside this time. Sullivan had it. Couldn't bring it in, and then brings up second down and 10. That time, the Trojan defense a little better, though, Mike. They were there. Yeah, they made an adjustment there. They were sitting in their spots quite well. Kind of had to force that one in, and it hit the turf incomplete. Johnson and Hines both check into the game at running back.
[1:08:21] Goolsby and Elliott to the right, Green wide to the left on this second down 10 play. Just underway, no score. Falcons' first possession after the interception. This time, going to leave it with Johnson. He cuts back, found a run to room, and got hit at the line of scrimmage. Pushes far to about the 11, down around the 10, depending on the mark. They'll give him about two or three. He got stuck pretty hard as he started to cut back. You know, with these headsets on, you can't hear much, but I hear some pads popping from up here.
That's kind of wild. It was definitely some hard hitting down there and tough sledding there for Carson Johnson. Third and 12 at the 8. Kayon Williams will check back in at running back. Sullivan Haddock will be at the wide receiver with Goolsby in the slot. Elliott and Green wide to the left with a one-back shotgun formation. Five-man front now for the Trojans. They bring the blitz. Quarterback draw. Looks to go. He's in the back. Brought him down at the 15. Didn't have time. The blitz comes, and Muscle Shoes sacks him, and it'll be field goal try attempt now for Florence.
That's a big-time play there by Muscle Shoes. Coming up with the blitz, that was Johnson, Marcus Johnson, making the sack. Yeah, they shot the right gap there. Costin was sitting there right with the ball and had nothing to do, so he just covered up and keep us in field goal range. It'll be a 33-yard attempt from the left hash. Good snap, good hold. Kick on the way by Green Hall, and it is no good. He pulled it to the right. So both teams have a football.
Florence gets a turnover. It can't bring out points, and Muscle Shoes will have it. First and 10 at the 20. Don't forget, in the morning, it'll be the coach's breakfast from the North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic. We'll be with you at 8 a.m. here on 93.9 The Score, talking to Friday night's coaches on Saturday morning about their games. It's the coach's breakfast, a great tradition here on 93.9 The Score. And don't forget, Alabama Crimson Tide football tomorrow, 9 a.m. pregame, 11 a.m. kick with East Carolina in their home opener.
So both teams have the football. Both teams come away scoreless, 0-0, with 7.20 to go here in the first quarter. Smothers will come back out with Reynolds' tailback, three wideouts, two to the left, and Samples will be wide to the right. Got to always know where Pritchard is. Lincoln Smothers, the quarterback, faces a four-man front. Now a five-man front. It's Burski walks up there. Now he steps out. Going to leave it inside. Look and know it's going to be the quarterback, Smothers, keeping it full man. He pulled the Falcons, and he got about 10 or 11 yards out to the 32, giving him a first down there.
And that shows what the Smothers brothers have always done, that's to pull that ball and run it, and they do it well. You know, it must be something genetic, for sure. He did a great job there, very reminiscent of his brother, bringing it around the outside, getting a first down there for Muscle Shoals. First and 10 at the 32, packed house here at James F. Moore Stadium for this game between Florence and Muscle Shoals. No score, under seven minutes to go here in the first. Smothers, again, this time going to keep it off the left side.
This time he cuts it back against the grain. Got to cross the 35 to the 36. Got about five right there. Jeffrey Jones, Florence was in position, and so the elusiveness of this great quarterback. Yeah, our defense is very quick. You know, we had him read the first series, but this series, he's getting a little loose. They're just running these little option reads, and he's keeping it every time. He has taken a couple decent shots, though, but we need to get him a – we need to get a good lick on him.
Better watch the option read into a pass play, too. They like to do that. That's how they scored against Subur. Second down and four. Wouldn't be surprised if they take a shot here. Smothers, going to play action, look for it across the middle. Can't do it. He's going to have to tuck it and run. Try to get outside, and Irons got him for a gain of one. Good job of Irons and Petty Poole to come up and close quickly. And a great job of the pass defense reading that right there.
Yeah, that's exactly what it was, is they read that perfectly, and you called it. You know, he pulled that ball back, and he was looking for that pass. It wasn't there because the Falcons stayed their ground. Heat timeout will do the same. 5'6 to go in the first quarter, no score. This is Falcon Football. We're back in 30. It's football time in Alabama. Our students are learning big American lessons. You can start with your God-given talents, and through practice, hard work, and sacrifice, you have the ability to become champions.
This is Congressman Robert Adderholt. May God bless all of our students representing our high schools during this season, and may God bless the United States of America. I'm Robert Adderholt, and I approve this message. Paid for by Adderholt for Congress. Five minutes, 56 seconds on the clock. Florence and Muscle Shoals scoreless. Both teams had the ball one time. Muscle Shoals turned it over on an interception, but Winkle's return was called back to about the 33, and it made a difference, and Florence missed a field goal from about 33.
And now, Muscle Shoals will have it third and two at their own 40-yard line, going right to left as you listen to us. Kevin Johnson and Mike Albertson on the call. John McDaniel, our statistician, Jeff Jones, will be on the sideline. Lincoln Smothers, the quarterback for Muscle Shoals, will have one back in the backfield with him. On this third and two play. And that's Reynolds. And Reynolds off the right side, got the running room, hit, and got the first down. Just got enough, I believe, to move the change.
[1:13:48] I don't know. I think they may mark him as short. Jeffrey Jones, I thought he had it, but it looked like the Falcons came up and made just enough of a play to make it fourth and about a half yard. Good job by London Pettypool to come up and hit the running back head on. It's going to be close. It looks like he needs a half yard. So here, the first big decision from Michael Darden, whether to go for it or not. He's calling for the heavy package.
The punter is also the quarterback, I believe. Yes, he is. So we can do a quick kick if need be. But I think a timeout is going to be taken by the Trojans. We'll do the same. No score. 544 to go into first. We'll return after this 30-second timeout. Hey, Falcon fans. This is Keith, Cypress Creek Indoor Range. We know a great defense starts up front and the Falcons start with Jaden White, your defensive tackle. Whether stopping the run or disrupting that quarterback, Jaden has the right tools, puts in the hard work, and has the right training to stop the offensive threat of opposing teams.
Let Cypress Creek Indoor Range provide you with the tools, training, and resources to defend your family. We're the biggest gun store in the Shoals and the only indoor shooting range and training center to provide everything you need to have the best defense for your family. Cypress Creek Indoor Range is located at 5060, Highway 157, and Underwood, Petersville. On the web, CypressCreekRange.com, and on social media. Go Falcons! No score in this Lawrence Muscle Shoals game, but the Trojans have it at their own 41 and fourth, and maybe a half yard to go, and they're going to bring the offense out and go for it on a fourth and a half yard.
And they're going to bring a lot of you guys in here. Katie Houston at 63290. Where's number zero? We'll be in there. They're going to go a heavy package, including Briani Jones, I believe. I'll have to check that. I don't have number 21 on my list here. Smothers is going to keep it himself, and he's got the first down across the 45 and hit down to the 36. There was a flag, and you bring a lot of players in there. Somebody could have jumped a little early, but with it being – It was early flag.
Let's see who it's on. Could have been an illegal alignment. We'll see. And Florence is saying it was against the Trojans, and so is the officials. And that changes things right there, and you bring about five new guys in, Mike, to come out there and make it a heavy package, and sometimes that heavy package doesn't pay off. You know, remember, this is their second game of the year. It's not like they have just a ton of reps on this heavy package. So, you know, early on, early miscues are expected in certain games.
You don't want to jump off sides here or commit a penalty. It's still fourth and sixth now from the 37, and as John McDaniel, a statistician, reminded us, the punter is the quarterback, Logan Smothers. And, actually, they got a different up back there, too. I noticed that than they had last time they were there. So, let's keep an eye on that. Gets the snap, rolls right, and almost blocked, but got rid of it just in time. Goolsby will let it bounce and stay away from it, and that's smart.
At the 26th three-yard line, that's where Florence will have it first and 10. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. The energy is there, that's for sure. Yeah, the energy is there. They're, you know, they're focused. There's no doubt. We've got to get some ball movement here. Going to have to run the ball. We're going to have to do what we do best. So, Florence, for their second possession, no score here, 527 to go in the first quarter. Jackson Mays will go wide right. In the slot will be Goolsby.
Green will go wide to the left on this first down play when Mahan gets the call. I'm trying to say, I think it's Hines that's in the backfield, shotgun formation, really fast linebackers and some good ones for muscle shows. They're a very good defense. First and 10 for Florence. Mahan, long count, looks back with 15 on the clock. Pistol formation, gets the snap, coming to the right side. It's Hines. He's got a little running rim and gains maybe three, two or three, depending on the mark there. Give him two, and he'll bring up the second down.
We'll call it eight to go, right at the 28-yard line. It's going to be a little tough sledding. This is the first time, Mike, where we've seen this offense face a defense that really plays the holes and gaps well. Not only plays the holes and gaps well, but they're also a much bigger team than some of the teams that we've seen previous. They're much bigger than what they're listed in the HSEA format, too. They've had all these guys at about 150 pounds. Imagine that. Second down and nine.
This time play actually went to throw the quick out, got it to green on the outside, made a run to the 30, to the 32. He's pushed out of bounds by a couple of Trojans, but that's a good pickup, about half of it. You get it down to 35. That's a nice little throw and catch there. It certainly was. Mahan got it out of his hands quick, got green the ball, and he was able to make some yards after that catch. Nice play. Nice execution. Whistle and see. Not sure what this is about.
They're sending a player off. Kristen Pritchard's helmet fell off on that. So, Pritchard has to come out, and that's a big thing. He'll be replaced there. Throw it right at him. By another. But that's a good one. Brandon Armstead is pretty good, too, as a senior, but he's only 5'6". Goalsby, excuse me, to the right. Green to the left. In the slot is Mays on third and five. Lawrence has to touch the 36-yard line. Going to leave it with his back inside. Got running around him to cross the 35.
[1:18:54] Right at the sticks. Is it enough? I think it is. Depending on the mark. It's going to be right at it. It's just going to depend on what the official says and whether it be a right foot or a left foot. It looked a little favorable on the Falcon side. Well, they haven't asked for a measurement yet, and they haven't said first down yet. Kenny Marson's asking about it. He can ask for a measurement. Man, they marked it a little short there, Jeffrey. I've got a bad angle, but it does look like they're bringing the first down.
First down. So, first and ten for the Falcons. Kenny Marson said, I never saw the first down. He's like, hey, give me a little help here. I need that first down. First, first down. That was confusing how they did it. He didn't do the first down signal at all. He didn't tell the white hat. He just told the chain to move the chains. At the 36-yard line, first and ten for the Falcons. There's no score here late in the first quarter. Man, the quarterback. Going to leave it.
That throw across the middle and incomplete. Went that time for his tight end, Kirkland blank. But a little too much mustard on that one. It brings up a second down and ten. The Falcons have come out, Mike, and thrown it a little more than I expected. Absolutely. And on first down, now we're second and ten. Second and long is really tough when you don't complete that first pass to really continue to run the ball. So, it kind of puts you at a little disadvantage when you don't get anything on that first down.
But one thing about the passing game, it does put that defense on their heels a little more. Second down and ten. One back in the backfield again. This time going to leave it with Johnson up the middle. Got a little running room, but not much. He spins far to maybe a yard. He was trying to go off that left side behind Orlando Rounds, but give Muscle Shoals credit. They closed the gap quickly there and making the play coming up on that one with Kobe Weakley. The Weakley brothers are the outside linebackers, Kobe Weakley and Colin Weakley.
And it's going to be a third and a long nine. Florence has to touch the 46 for the line to gain. Here in the first quarter, no score. They're playing extremely tight. Linebackers are three, four yards at the most away from the line of scrimmage, so we're going to have to probably do a little passing to loosen that up. Goosby will go in motion to the left. Four wide receivers, one back. Straight drop for Mahan. Good protection across the middle and complete in a hard hit immediately.
Fumble on the play and a baby Muscle Shoals ball. Depending on if Goosby caught it. No, he said he didn't catch it. Incomplete pass. The official said he never had it, but he got stuck pretty hard. And that shallow route has not been there yet for the first three games, and that's the danger of that shallow route right there. It certainly is. You know, you kind of leave your wide receiver hanging out to dry there, and Muscle Shoals was really quick in closing that one down and delivered a big hit.
Goosby was able to pop right back up, but too many of those shots, and somebody's going to have to go see Bone and Joint. Kyron Keene and samples are deep, but a timeout having to be taken by the Trojans. That's their second of the day here in the first half. 3.26 to go in the first quarter, no score. Come back and see us in 30 seconds. This is Miranda Haddock with the Florence Education Foundation. Florence will have to punt it away. And it'll be Greenhall to punt to a double safety. Keen and samples are deep for the Trojans. Good snap. Gets it away. High hanging kick. Fair cash call for. And taking a fumble. Ball on the ground. And Florence has it. I do believe they come up with it. Elliott gets it there. It went right through the wickets. And Florence has it at the 29. Give Greenhall credit for the high kick that he turned it over. And it caused the turnover.
Yeah, it was a nice kick there. And as it was coming down, you saw the returner was a little unsteady. After he called that fair catch, he had to take a step up. And as he was taking that, got a little bit low on him, kind of sank straight down. He missed it. The Falcons recovered. Well, two turnovers already for this Falcons team against the Trojans. They came up empty the last time. Knee points here. Mahan will bring the offense out there at the 29-yard line after the muff punt by Keen and a great kick by Greenhall.
He really sort of took his time, but he turned it over. Green will go wide to the right. Three wide to the left. First and ten. Play action. Wants to throw. Now Mahan in trouble. Steps up in the pocket. Runs. Pushes forward and gains a yard maybe. Maybe back to the line of scrimmage. And that's all. Give Muscle Shoals credit. They're starting to read these quick throws and these quick lanes. And, Mike, you know, right now it seems like the defenses for both teams sort of have the number of the other offense.
[1:24:10] Yeah. Yeah, I would say so. You know, I saw man-on-man on this outside here, Kevante Green going up against Pritchard. That would be a tough matchup. However, a lot of green space there didn't even look that direction. Mitch Boyd, Kirkland Blank are in at tiny and H-back on this second down play. Play clock at 10 now. As the Falcons get to play, one back to the right of Mahan. Five on the play clock. Mahan with a blitz coming. Leads it inside for Johnson. Nowhere to go. He tries to bounce outside.
Use his speed. Cuts up and got a yard out of nothing. And that's about it to the 28. And right now, the Trojan defense is coming from all areas, John. They're bringing it and they're really shooting the gaps. They definitely play the line of scrimmage strong. They're going to be – we're going to have to, again, loosen it up. You've got to be able to have more than one facet. And the Falcons are learning that. This is a top-level defense. Green will be wide to the right. Gools will be wide left.
And he'll leave the two dot ends blank in there as well. And I'm telling you, they're going to have to get a timeout. Kenny Marshall is going to take the timeout. We'll do the same. Both teams burning two timeouts early in the first quarter. 150 to go. Scoreless. We're back in 30. Florence Utilities now offers new bill pay options. Florence Falcons football, 93-9 to score since 2004. Kevin Johnson with you on the call. Florence and Muscle Shoals scoreless with 150 to go. And both teams have used two timeouts. You know, Mike, sometimes the players have jitters. Sometimes the coaches have jitters as well and have to call these timeouts.
Yeah, I mean, a big play like this early in the game, I mean, these coaches know what's at stake. And an early score could be the ball game early on. Anything could happen. Three wideouts left. One to the right on this third and nine play. Williams is the tailback. And Florence moved early. Moved early on that. And they'll bring up third and say now 14 to go. Sullivan had it. Goolsby and Mays wide to the left. Tough to get a penalty out of a timeout. Well, it is going to be a third down and we'll call it 14 to go from the 33-yard line on the right hash.
You might take a shot with Green here, but I think you might try to get the ball into Williams' hands on the swing maybe. Let's see. Straight drop. Look to throw. Steps up in the pocket. Has time. Throws to the end zone. Wide open out there. Goolsby caught it and missed it. It went right through his hands. It was a beautiful throw by Mayhand, but it'll bring up fourth down. It was up right in his eyes. I don't know, possibly looking back this way, lights. I can't tell, but he just went right through the wickets.
Went right through the wickets. You know, beautiful pass by Mayhand. John Carter did a great job of getting open there. Unfortunately, couldn't secure it in the back of the end zone. That is a tough break, and we might have to look back at that one. That's a big miss. Lawrence will go for it on fourth and 14 at the 142 mark here in the corner at 32-yard line. Why not? Seven will play around to call a timeout, though, to go for it. Kenny Morrison will have to use his third timeout.
Or is he going to take the penalty? Nope, he's going to take the timeout. We'll do the same. Falcon football returns in 30 seconds. You got a craving that won't quit? Come dine in or call ahead for to-go. Lost Pizza Company Shoals, 201 North Seminary Street in Florence. Dine in or to-go. Back here at James F. Moore Stadium. Florence on the road in the road. White jerseys, white pants. Kevin Johnson on the call. Falcons face fourth and 14. Missed an opportunity there in the end zone, but he'll come up fourth and 14, and Florence will go for it. Haddock will come out here to the right, along with Goolsby and Williams coming wide right now. I think Williams is going to stay in the backfield.
The ball is on the right hash. Mays and Green to the left for the quarterback, Mayhem. Three-man front. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Trojans blitz again. They've got a little shell defense now. Maybe get it in the hands of Williams again on the screen. Let's see. Straight drop. Looking to throw. Throwing the fade to the left for Green so if you can go get it, but it's underthrown and tipped away. Pritchard read it. Tipped it away. And Muscle Shoals defense holds. And we stay scoreless with 136 to go.
[1:29:35] And the Trojans will have the football. Missed opportunities. We've had a couple of chances, Mike, early and no points for Florence. And in games like this, you remember those things. You certainly will. And good teams will beat you for missed opportunities like that. So early on, you know, Muscle Shoals has really weathered the storm that Florence has given them. And it's a matter of time before they strike. I would not be surprised. Jeffrey Jones, this is where your defense has to be alert to anything. Yeah.
The momentum is on their side right now. And you could see anything right here. They just got to lock them down and play if the defense is going to play their game. First and 10 for Smothers, the quarterback. Pistol formation bringing Pritchard in motion. Going to play action roll. Rock trying to get out to Pritchard on the wing but can't. So he's going to have to run and look. And he's going to be hit. Got away from one to the 35 to the 40. He has a first down to the 45.
What the Falcons had, he couldn't stop him. And Smothers showing he's greasy as a grease big. Slips away from two Falcons and gets another first down. Yeah, that was a good job by the Falcons. In coverage, however, Smothers did a great job of really breaking it upfield and getting a first down there for Muscle Charles. John, Florence did everything right. They read the play. They just didn't make the play. Yeah, I mean, it's tough. You've got an unblocked player there to make the tackle. You've got to get the quarterback down.
No need for a big hit. Second, first down play. Looks to give it inside to his back. No throw a middle. Tipped up and incomplete. Too much mustard on that one. Samples with the intended receiver. And if a rainer for Florence could have got there, he's about 10 yards away. He couldn't get it. Bring up second down and 10. But we see Smothers is good about reading and throwing. And we talked about it in our pregame a little bit off the air. They run that read option. Sometimes, you have guys going down as offensive linemen, John.
And that could be a penalty if the officials will see it when they play the ball. Yeah, you're right. It is a penalty. They've just got to call it. It makes it possible for a linebacker and a defensive player to read the play. Three wideouts, including Pritchard, Smothers, and Samples. One back. And again, the last time out for both teams just called here in the first quarter. 107 to go. We're scoreless. We're back in 30. At North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic, our Shoals roots run deep. The Falcons had a missed field goal, go wide right, and then they also had a potential touchdown that could not be brought in and could not get the fourth down conversion. Now Muscle Shoals, who has crossed the 50-yard line once, faced second down and 10 at their own 45.
But they are a big play team, too, especially with Pritchard and Samples. Their tailback, I couldn't tell. I think that is Warren Gage 34 or is that number four? We'll check. Could be low in there. I think it's low now, but I'll check. In motion, Smothers to the right for his brother, the quarterback. Back to pass, looking, wants to throw deep down the middle of the field. One-on-one out here goes up, and it is caught down around the 15-yard line. Great throw and catch, and that's Samples who brings it in.
The coverage wasn't bad. That's the first big play of the day for the Trojans. Yeah, it was a beautiful play, beautiful ball, and the wide receiver did a great job of coming down with it. It was just overall great high school football play. Gage Warren, the tailback behind Lincoln Smothers, the quarterback. He'll have low wide to the left along with Samples and Smothers to the left. On his first and ten play in Falcon territory, we'll call it at the 16, I think, yard line. Now a flexing man out to the right.
No backs in the backfield for Smothers. Smothers looks left. Once we're on the quarterback draw up the middle. Scoots away from Warren, but not two. That time, Jaden White and friends said no, no, no. I actually checked that. That was Nate Pryde who came up and hit him. Gain of one at the 15. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. This is where the Falcon defense has showed some resilience in games like the first two games. Let's see if they can do it again. Yeah, like I said, tighten up.
We know the offense they're running. They have athletes all over the field, and so we just got to match them athlete for athlete. Looks like there's a player down. That was – he was trying to – Out of nowhere. He was trying to shake it off, and they kept telling him to go down, and he acted like he just got shot. That was kind of a great or horrible acting job. Well, I think he goes down again because I think he's cramped up or something. While they attend to the Trojan player, they're going to check him there for cramps.

[1:35:06] Kevin, are they going to wind the clock to finish the quarter? We've got five seconds left on the clock. I think an injured player didn't think that would happen, but let's see. They stopped it at five seconds. Now Coach Darden is saying, hey, the clock ran. It should be something else. I think they're going to have to realign the clock. Actually, the Muscle Shoals offense is coming down to this end of the field, but I'm not sure that's what's happening. Let's see. Are they going to do it?
I hadn't said yet. No, the White Hat is staying down here. I think Muscle Shoals offense is confused in their coaching staff. Coach Darden is saying, you've got to get back down here. No, they're pushing Florence back. No, it's at the 15. No, yes. They're going to make them run one play, appears to. Yeah, with five seconds to go, confusion. And I don't think the clock. Well, he'll wind it. Now he winds, and so he says that's what will happen. So the clock will wind, and that will be the end of the first quarter.
After one, we're scoreless. And Florence and Muscle Shoals, we're back in one minute. Hello, this is Kevin Arnold with Village Discount Drugs. We've been in the Shoals since 1979. We live here. Pennington leads Sheffield, 14-7. Desher leading Lawrence County, 21-0. Addison leads Waterloo, 20-0. Russellville-Hartsell tied at 7. James Clemens leading Bob Jones, 6-0. Red Bay leads Phillips, 6-0. Morris Hill leads Westminster Christian, 7-6. Hatton leads Fayette County, 7-0. Hamilton leads Ardmore, 14-0. Shoals' Christian, Lindsay Lane tied at nothing.
Lauderdale County leading Carbert Heights, 6-0. Oklahoma is leading UTEP, 14-0. And in the seventh, the Braves lead the Phillies, 3-2. Thank you, James Moody. Here at James F. Moore Stadium, Florence on the road, tied with Muscle Shoals, 0-0, with the Trojans knocking on the door. They'll have Warren at tailback with quarterback Lincoln Smothers in shotgun formation. One wide receiver to the right and a bunch set tight to the left. You've got to know where the tight end is, actually. So you've got a tight end on the right and two to the left.
So a little different formation. You better know where everybody is on this second down nine play. Man comes in motion sample. Look to pass. Look to the right, to the back out of the backfield. Couldn't have dropped it. That was to Warren. He couldn't bring it in. It's that little pick play where you pick the linebacker with the guy in motion, trying to throw it there, but no call on that. But he dropped it, so it brings up third and 10. Yeah, there was no real contact because Samples was the guy that was in motion.
He just kind of ran right through but cleared out the defense pretty well and opened up a lot of green space there. We're going to see that play again in the quarters to come. You see that a lot at the next level and beyond. Third and nine at the 15. The Trojans have to touch the six for a first down. Two wide out left, one to the right. Keep an eye on the quarterback here. Man in motion to the tailback. Back to pass. Look, he's in trouble.
He's going to be hit. He's going to be sacked. Goes down all the way back around the 31-yard line. Hit comes in there. That was Burski and friends taking care of business. That was a great job by the Falcons to seal that one up because we had a few Trojans running around in the end zone unopposed. They're going to actually mark him up to the 25. I think we lost five yards on that one. The white hat was marking it at the 31, but the line judge said the 25 where they hit him and it brings up a field goal opportunity from 42 yards away for the Trojans.
That was a friendly spot there. That was a nine-yard loss. Right in the middle of the field. The Trojans will attempt a field goal now. Cold to hold it. Low snap. Kick is on the way. It's going to be short. No good. Didn't have enough leg into that one. And the Falcon defense holds. So the name of the game so far, defense. We're scoreless here. 11.06 to go in the second quarter. And, Mike, if you're Coach Kenny Morris and your team right now, there's a yellow flag late.
Is that for celebration after that? I'm not sure. Man, I didn't see it. But it's thrown right at the line of scrimmage where it happened. It was after the play a good bit. But if they call a flag here, it could be a first down or it could be post-penalty. The offense for most of the shows is putting their… Our defensive guys are going to the bench. That's got to be a dead ball, wouldn't it? We didn't see the flag thrown. Dead ball. Okay, so it should be personal foul against Florence.
So it'll be Florence's football, but it's a dead ball, and Florence will have first down. But, again, not a smart penalty if you're Florence. You don't need to get these dead ball penalties. And that's going to be all the way back to the 10-yard line. Yeah, that's a huge penalty. I mean, that's obviously 15 yards there. But, you know, starting this deep, this game is obviously working out to be a field position battle at this point. So starting off this deep in your own territory is not great.
[1:40:18] And we haven't had much going on offense so far. Jaden Stewart's 42-yard field goal short. Parker Greenhall missed one earlier for the Falcons. Both teams have threatened. Both teams have had chances to get touchdowns. Neither team has scored. Two backs in the backfield for Mahan on this first and 10 play, including Williams, I believe, to the right of him. Going to leave it with Williams, who looks for a little hug. Got a little bit across the 13 and pushes forward to the 15. And all by himself drags two Trojans, about two more yards.
He dragged about three or four. He kept churning his legs and getting leverage against the Muscle Shoals defense and really just fought for each and every yard there. He probably could have only had a three-yard gain and picked up another six. How about eight on the carry? Jeffrey Jones, that's impressive for a sophomore. He got a couple of those dragging about four players, too. Yeah, and I keep forgetting he is a sophomore. Johnson and Williams, the tailbacks, one to each side. Three wideouts, including Goolsby, Haddock, and Green on this second and two play.
Green thought the Muscle Shoals jumped early, but no call. Play clock at 10. Mahan checking against the four-man front. This time going to leave it with Williams off the right side. This time not a whole lot of running room, but he pushes forward maybe a yard or back to the line of scrimmage. It'll bring you up third and two, and tough sledding there on the inside right now. Absolutely, but I think we're going to have to keep getting after it. Just keep grinding at this point. Haven't had much success, but we haven't given our running backs an opportunity to pick up a first down on three carries yet.
Third and two. The Falcons have to touch the 20 to get a first down. 9.15 counting here in the first half. Four-man front for the Trojans. Falcons, lone count. Get the snap. Going to leave it with Williams again. Spins off one. Can't spin off the other. He's not going to get there. Too much penetration right there. That was blown up instantly. Two Muscle Shoals guys were in the backfield and got Williams off his feet almost instantly. So Greenhall will have to boot it away in the shadow of his own goal line, and Muscle Shoals, known for great special teams, you've got to keep an eye on this here.
They left a punt earlier with Kyron Keane back, but I think they're going to bring him off this time, and they're going to put one safety back, and that's Samples. Fourth and three for the Falcons at the 17. Good snap. Greenhall's got time and boosts away. A line drive kick going to hit around midfield, take a Falcon bounce into Trojan territory, inside the 40, inside the 35, and roll dead at the 34. Nice punt by Greenhall there. So that will flip the field a little bit, but no score here with 853 to go in the first half.
Jeffrey Jones, I don't know about you, but on my bingo card, I didn't have 0-0 here going into midway second quarter. Yeah, I didn't either. You know, in my opinion, it very easily could be, I'd say, 13-10, 17-10 possibly, but, you know, we'll take a good tight game here. As we did predict, the defenses are prevailing right now, that's for sure. No doubt about it. Tailback will be Reynolds to come in for the Trojans on this first and 10 play for Smothers, the quarterback. Number one has got moved inside to the slot.
Watch for him. Got one and two on the same side. Always be aware of that. Falcons defense stems at the line of scrimmage. Going to give it inside, and now it's going to be to Reynolds. He gets outside and got a little running room to the 39. Give him about four there. Again, Muscle Shoes attacking the boundary side, the soft side, the short side of the field, Mike. Yes, and we see that a lot, especially in high school football, being able to hit that short side. It gives your offensive lineman opportunity to not hold.
You know, the longer that they're engaged in a play, the more likely they are to hold, especially as that play gets strung out. Giving five on the carry. You've got a little more than a thought to the 40. Second down and five. Two wide outs to the right, one to the left. Again, going to give it inside. Nowhere to go this time. The Falcon defense comes up hold. It's pretty good. Jaden White filled the gap, and others came and helped as well. And that brings up third and about four.
Yeah, Dixon in on that tackle as well. That defensive line is going to be asked to do a lot today. Third down and four to go. I think Muscle Shoes is going to arrive at the same conclusion the two other teams we've played. There's very tough sledding on the inside. They're going to try to start bouncing the ball out to the corners. Don't jump off sides here. This is where the offensive line is moving, different things. Going to look, play action. Now we're going to give it to this back off the left side.
And there's Chase Winkles brought him down about a yard short, I think, depending on the mark. He fell forward. But I think he's going to be about a half yard short. Jeffrey Jones, you've got a better view than I do. Actually, my view is not much better, but it's going to be close. Let's see there. I think they might measure this one. I think he's short, but he got a good mark. He got a real good mark. Better than he should have. I'll say that. Yeah, first down.
They're going to move the chain. They're not going to measure. So they've had the ball up at the 50-yard line and moved the chains and then moved the ball back to the 49. Just saying. That's what I say. So it's 51 yards away. First and 10 for the Trojans. 7.48 and counting in the first half. Two wideouts right. One left for the Trojans. Smothers, the quarterback, has one tailback in the backfield. Smothers looks over the Falcon defense. Smothers wants to pass. Looking left, wanting to throw quick out there and incomplete.
[1:45:44] I think they were off the same page on that one, Mike. It looked like one guy was supposed to break, and nobody did. It brings up a second down. Yeah, it looks like it was going to be a quick slant opportunity, and that's what was thrown, but the receiver was going out and up. Jaden Martinez was the closest receiver there to that one. Samples and Pritchard, one and two. Always know where they are. Out wide, right for the Trojans, Ledger, Smothers. And now these two speedsters in the bunch set to the right.
Going to leave it. No, wants to roll and throw. Looking. Wants to throw across the grain. Wide, open down the sideline, and incomplete. Knocked it down. Oh, I thought it was going deep, but it got knocked away. I was looking away, Mike, and I missed it. But it looked like the Falcons knocked the pass down. Yeah, it was batted down. It was a great job. You know, after a couple seconds, throw your hands up there. As that pass was being delivered, it appeared that Jaden White got his hand on the ball, almost intercepted there by a different lineman.
Thank goodness he did, John. He had a man open down the sideline. I think you and I both saw the guy running up the sideline completely, five, ten yards open. We will see that play again. They had that red strolled out well. Third and ten. Three wide outs. Two to the right are dangerous in Pritchard and Samples. The tight end, Ludington, to the right now. Looks to the left, wants to roll to the right, throw. Falcons try to pressure Smothers, who throws it. It's caught at midfield.
Short of the first down. Good defense there by Ja'Kyle and Jones, who knocks Samples out after a game of about five. And it brings up fourth down and four at the 50-yard line. They'll give him a six-yard gain. 7-19 on the clock. No score here in quarter number two. Florence and Muscle Shoes going at it, and Muscle Shoes will leave their offense out there. Be very diligent here. Don't jump off sides. Hard count. Nobody moved. Look back. They have no timeouts. Remember, the Trojans with 17 on the play clock.
Now they drop back. The quarterback is going to punt a quick kick and get rid of it, and that's a good play. And he kicks it down the field inside the 20, and they'll roll inside the 10. And that's a great call by the Trojans, who will roll that thing all the way down to the one-yard line. Almost a one-foot line. That thing had helium in it. That kept rolling and rolling. It rolled 22 yards. And it's a great call. And the old quick kick on fourth down gives the Falcons 99 and a half yards to go.
Endanger time in a 0-0 game here in the first half with 7.05 to go. You've got to get out of the shadow of your own goal line, Mike. Absolutely. You know, we've talked about this being a field possession battle at this point. If teams are going to play tight and very conservative, we're going to have to win this. This battle, which means we're going to have to get a couple first downs here and flip this field. I'd like to see us not do any. We're in the shotgun, which is not what I would expect.
But I was going to say no deep handoffs considering the pass rush they get. A-hand has two wide outs to each side, one to each side. Now he switches tight ends off to the left side now and switch back. I'm going to leave it with his tailback. And he gets the first down into the 5. It's Williams to the 10. Got the first down to the 14, to the 15. Blow the whistle as he goes down about the 18-yard line. He was dragging Trojans with him. And he gets enough to get a lot of daylight for the Falcons.
He is extremely explosive in being able to blow through that line there. Once he got in some open space, he hit that circle button and spun again. He's really just fun to watch out there. Gain of 18 to the 19-yard line. First and 10 at the 19. Big run by Williams. Kayon will stay in the game. Gooseby out wide left, green wide right. Now he switches tight ends to the right side, including Tejada in there with Blank. High snap over the head. Trouble back in the end zone. Williams is going back and pick it up, trying to get out of the end zone.
If he can, it'll be a miracle. And he might have, depending on the mark. He might have. He stretched out. I think he got to the one-foot line. He extended over. That's an incredible play by Williams. Excellent play. He saved two points right there. But now you've got third down and most of Avalon Avenue to go. And that's not good for Florence. 18 yards lost. Oh, disaster for Florence. And there's a heat timeout will be taken. And what a great timeout for the Falcons. Timeout on the field.

Florence Falcons Football here on 93.9 The Score. Kevin Johnson, the crew, glad to be with you. 158 to go in the first half, and it's a knockdown dragout right now. Scoreless, but most of the shows just had a safety, but they couldn't tackle Williams, who got back to the goal line after a long snap went over the head of the quarterback. And Florence now, just more than anything, just needs to get it out of their own shadow of their goal line. We'll face third or second down. Is it second down actually?
[1:51:05] It's second down, KJ. Second down, and we'll call it about 30 to go. Yeah, that's exactly right. Don't forget, at the half, by the way, Superintendent Bill Hopkins of Florence will be our guest. Three wide outs. Watch for Florence to throw a quick pass here, maybe try to get a few yards. Man, gets the snap, play action, looks, wants to throw right deep down the sideline, going one-on-one with green over the head of everybody and incomplete. The closest player to it was a Trojan player, and it brings up third down.
They're sending a punt unit out. I'm not sure what down it is. I'm not sure Florence knows what down it is. It is now third down. Now it's third down, so the punt unit thing comes back off. That in itself sort of shows you a little bit of the confusion going on in this game today. That's certainly on a coach on that one, because the quarterback was well on it. He was telling them what down it was and sending them off the field. The yard markers are also correctly indicating the current down.
Play clock at 12, and the play just coming in, and you don't have any timeouts. Kirkman checks into the game. What's the penalty from the half-yard line? Another half-yard. A quarter-inch. Yeah, I would just take the penalty here. That's what Kenny Morrison's saying. Just take the penalty. So what do they do? They can't move it back much further. Don't have any timeouts left. I think Florence thought there was a timeout. That offense may say, no, it's just a penalty. So they just pick the ball up and respot it, basically.
Jeffrey Jones, it's 99 and a half to go for sure. 99 and three quarters. You're right, guys. We had eight on the field right there, and a penalty is going to cost us about one quarter of a smidge of an inch. Mays is Kirkman in the game, wide left. Mayhand, the quarterback. Johnson, the tailback, and the play will come in. Play clock just starts. 541 to go in the first half, and Florence, in a scoreless game, but have 99 yards to go on third down. Back to pass, looks right, throws the pass, Gullsby caught it, and gets a few out to the five.
Bounces far to about the seven and nine, ten. That's a good push right there, pushed out to about the 11-yard line. So he got about ten, and that will give the room for Greenhall to punt it away at the 11-yard line. Just being able to find that space was huge right there. One thing about Greenhall, I noticed the past times he had great punts, but he took his time a little bit the last two punts. Can't do that here. When you're inside your 20, you've got to get rid of it.
Our upbacks are not doing a very good job. They're looking right down the barrel, and any kind of outside pressure they're letting go, we're going to have to work on that. The Trojans are going to come for it here. Good snap. Greenhall gets it away just in time. Not a great punt, necessarily, but it gets away. Give him credit just getting it out of there, but it's pretty short. Marked at the 35. Inside the 35, he's still walking. He should be at the 29. They're going to bring it all the way back up to about the 29, 28, 27, 26.
No, he's gone way too far. 25, that's terrible. That's not right. That's a 25-yard line, and they're going to give Trojans 25 yards to go, and we disagree with it, but they give them about four or five extra yards on the mark. It's not off bad, though. But you got rid of it. Now your defense has been called upon one more time in a scoreless game with 4.50 to go in the first half. We talked in the pregame that this was going to be the biggest challenge that the Falcons have faced thus far, and it is proven to be correct.
Gage Warren, the tailback, actually two tailbacks back there with Smothers on this play, on the first and ten play. Play clock at six. Falcon showing blitz back out of it. Get the snap. Going to leave it with Warren off the left side. Got a few yards and falls far to the third 20. He fell backwards, but he got about four yards falling backwards as he was tripped up. Second down and five to go, and Muscle Souls wants to go fast now. They want to speed it up, so they're going tempo, and I think that's what they want to do.
They're going to keep running that play and watch for Smothers to keep it as well, so you've got to be alert. Second down and five to go. This time fumble in the backfield, and he has to fall on it, and he loses four yards. Boy, can you tell this is a packed house? Can you tell this is a lot of people? Can you tell this is a big game? Both teams not themselves right now, Mike. No, definitely there's been an uncanny amount of miscues here early on.
Both coaches calling it pretty tight as well, so it's just really a really conservative game, and every play seems to matter, but when you play that tight, mistakes seem to come in bunches. Third and nine now from the 24. No timeouts for either team. 3.52 and counting here. Three wideouts to the right. One wing back to the left. Now they're bringing everybody forward to the right. They're looking to throw the quick screen out here and get it to the back, and he's in trouble. He's going down in the backfield at the 30-yard line.
Bo Berski makes an incredible play. Flag on the play. They'll mark it dead at the 29. Let's see what the penalty was. It's going to be on the legal shift. Declined. He's saying offsides. I can't believe that. On who? He put his hands on his side, did the side judge. No, illegal shift. I didn't know what he was saying there, but it's declined, and it'll be fourth down. They give him an extra yard to the 29. Fourth and 14, and now the Trojans will keep their offense on the field and go for it.
[1:56:24] Falcons had a fourth and long. Can this Falcon defense come back and stop the Trojans here? It would be incredible for this Falcon team and swing the momentum with 3.30 to go here in the first half. Biggest play of the game, I feel like, right here. Two wide to the right. Samples and Pritchard. Two to the left. One back in the backfield. Wants to pass. Looking to throw the quick screen. Got it to Samples, and he can't get away. He's drugged down from behind. That's Martinez. He hog-tied him.
Pulled him up. Tied him up. 32-yard line. He got him down at the 26, and it's Falcons football. That was a good job by the Falcons there to make sure that they wrapped that one up. It was just a good job, after a calamity of errors, to not let Muscle Shoals score on that drive there. Starting at the 25 was really tough, but they stuck it. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. That was one of those plays that we made circle right there. Yeah, you said it was a play of the game, and I agree.
I was sitting there watching. It was like, surely they're not going to have a fourth and 14 play in them. You know, great job by the defense getting penetration. Our defensive line is really stepping up, playing good. Not too tired, but they've been running a lot. We need to keep an eye on those guys. Carson Johnson to the left of the quarterback, Mahan. Two wide outs to the right. Tied in motion, comes back to the left. Going to leave it with Johnson off the right side. He's hit from behind, hitting the front, but he gets about a yard.
By the way, he gets back to the line of scrimmage to the 27. There's too much penetration there. And the Trojans are reading this play pretty quick. And, Mike, adjustments will have to be made at halftime. Oh, absolutely. You know, whatever we have in our book that we haven't played yet or haven't shown yet, we're going to have to do some of that for sure. John, you almost want to say, let's get to the half right here. Three minutes to go. Yeah, I don't stop trying to be aggressive and do some outside zone runs, but I very cautiously would put it in the air.
Second down and 10 for Mahan. One wide out to each side. Johnson still his tailback. Going to leave it with Johnson again. This time he's too far to the 30 to the 32. That's his best run. Gets about seven. Six yards, we'll say, and bring you up third down and four. At the 33-yard line. And we'll go under two minutes when we snap it again with 2.25 to go. The play clock has not started yet. So third down, and Falcons have to get to the 37. You talked about him running in the pregame.
Getting the quarterback, costing out on the edge, maybe with third and short, could be a good time to do see something we haven't seen before. Hard count here wouldn't be bad either. Trojan show blitz again. Play action. Wants to throw. Across the middle, incomplete. Haddock wasn't ready for it. Felt the defender come under him. And Mahan had to get rid of it because he felt the pressure coming up the middle. A little bit, Mike, I'll say this. I'll go color animals for a minute. I feel like Muscle Shoals has got the snap count red a little bit.
I think they realize when we're snapping because they are bringing the pressure. I mean, before we almost snapped the ball. Yeah, they're quick off the snap for sure. Looks like some of these wide receivers are a little hesitant, you know, when they're having to make these catches because Muscle Shoals has been hitting hard and hitting hard early. So, got a little gator arms on that one. Fourth and four. Green Hall. Boots it away. Good kick. Samples back deep. Going to let it hit at the 40 and won't get it.
And the Falcons get around it. It'll blow inside the 30 down to the 28-yard line. And that'll be at the 29, actually. First and 10 for the Trojans with 150 to go here in the half. Neither team with timeouts left. So, we'll be able to see what happens here for both teams. Don't forget, at the half, Superintendent Bill Hopkins is supposed to be our guest. He'll be with us. Looking forward to talking to him about all that's happened. We welcome him to the city of Florence and to Florence City Schools.
So, the Trojans will have to go 70, we'll call it 81 yards. 81 yards from their own 19. Smothers will have wear in the backfield. Two wideouts. You've got to just know where Samples and Pritchard are at all times. That's the dangerous one. Actually, Samples is in the slot now. They've got a different wide receiver. I think it's going to be. I think that may be Gage Warren in the backfield. Going to leave it inside. Oh, he's hit and tattooed right as he took the handoff. Was that Winkles that came through and shot the gap there?
I couldn't tell. That is not. That's 72. No, I think 32. That was Martinez. Yeah, I think that was so. Martinez came from outside linebiker, and he shot the gap and lost one. And that was one of those that is lucky. Muscle Shoals didn't fumble the ball there for the Trojans. I think they're going to be satisfied to go into the half, though. I think so as well. Second down and 11. Can't go to sleep here. The Falcon defense here. Smothers with one back in the backfield again. I think Smothers may keep it.
Let's see. This time he is going to keep it. Nope, give it inside again. And nowhere to go again. The Falcons pushing back. And that will bring up third down. The clock will run with 104. You can't stop the clock. So the Trojans can run probably one more play and don't have to snap it again if they'll run the clock down. I think they will. And that's what their plan is, John. I think you agree. Jeffrey Jones on the sideline. Both crowds came into this with a lot of energy, both sidelines.
[2:01:37] But right now, a lot of people are saying, okay, who's going to strike first? J.J. may already have left me. Sorry, I'm walking up. He's on the stairs. He's coming up with us. Third down and 11. Two wideouts right, one to the left. I don't think the Trojans will pass it here with 30 seconds to go. Smothers going to leave it with his tail back again off the left side. And you see it hard right there by Sistrunk at the 25-yard line. He brought the oohs and the ahs from the crowd.
But he stays with the ball in his hand. And the injured Trojan, if he can't get up, that can play a factor. But he gets up. It's good to see he's okay. And the clock will run out. Well, I didn't have goose eggs on the scoreboard, but that's what we'll have after one half of football. Florence zero. Muscle shows zero. This is Falcon Football. We're back in two minutes. And all the blue shirts for the Falcons radio crew on tonight, including our fifth member of the crew, we'll welcome honorarily tonight.
It's the new superintendent of Florence City Schools, Mr. Coach Bill Hopkins. I'll call you Coach. How are you doing, Coach? I am doing great, guys. Thanks for having me. Glad to have you here. Kevin Johnson here, voice of the Falcons. And, Coach, I'll call you that with much respect because once you're a coach, you're always a coach. Don't you sort of feel like that? That's one of those things that stays with you for a long time? Absolutely. I had a mentor, Tom Calvin, one time that told me, he said, as long as they call you coach, it means something.
[2:06:54] And so it'll always mean something to me. Well, we are honored to have you in the city of Florence and in Florence City Schools. And, man, this has been an incredible whirlwind of you for the transition. But what a seven or eight months it's been for you. Oh, it's been a – we've had the pedal on the – I mean, the gas pedal on down. But, yes, it's been a great few months. I mean, I am so excited. When I got here and thought I was going to do that interim gig, and then I met the board and I met the people and I met the town, I thought this is the place that I want to be.
I think that people don't understand how special this place is. This right here, it's ready to explode. Yeah, a little bit of a sleeping giant at times, don't you think so? It is. I tell people all the time, once we get this thing moving, I tell you, once this train gets moving, it's going to be hard to stop. I agree with that. As we speak with Mr. Bill Hopkins, who is the superintendent at Florence City Schools. And, Coach, when you come into any time of the school and academics, you also have athletics.
And athletics is a big part of it. You know, as a former coach, it's the front door a lot of times for your school in many ways. Oh, absolutely. It's the front door. It's the front porch. When people drive by, what they see is our athletics. They think of us when they see our athletics. And, you know, they don't know what the great things that are going on inside the schools. And let me tell you, we do have a lot of great things going on inside the schools.
But I will say, I love to see our kids participating. You know, with the creation of flag football this year, I talked to the school board while we were watching the game. And I said, look at these young ladies. I said, let's not look at the score. Let's look at anything else. Let's look at these ladies out here, and where would our children be at this time of day if they weren't here? We don't know, but I know where they are. They're somewhere contributing to Florence.
Yeah, it's something. And they wear the falcon blue with pride, and it gives them a chance to do that as well. That's a big part of this, is bringing the pride to Florence in every sport, in every academic thing. You are starting to do that in many ways. That's one of your goals, I know. And talk about some of the things you look forward to doing with Florence City Schools in the future as well. Well, if you've been to the stadium, obviously you've seen the changes.
And I have to give most of the credit to Myra Miles and Tim Bowens, our athletic director and assistant athletic director. But that has been a focus of our school board. They want to make sure that we do those type of things. I think that when you get to basketball season, you're going to be excited. We've got two jumbotrons that are going to be inside the stadium. It's going to be rocking. So what we really want to do is we want to make sure that the game day experience for all of our athletes, whether it be cross-country, whether it be swimming, whatever it is, that everyone has a great game day experience.
Because we believe if you're a Falcon, it's something special. You know, we have to be honest as we speak with Mr. Bill Hawkins. In your days of coaching at West Morgan as a coach, you had an interesting assistant coach that has a part in this game with Muscle Shoals in Florence for many years. I do, and thank you for mentioning that. So Scott Bazin, the recently retired head coach at Muscle Shoals, his first coaching job was with me. He actually did his student teaching with me, and he coached with me for two years.
Wow. And so I consider Coach Bazin a great friend, and I love him dearly. And I just told him when I got here, I said, I understood when you knew that I was going to be over in Florence, you just couldn't stand to compete against me, so he just decided to retire. So I've been telling him that all along. I'm the reason he left, so he just didn't want to do it. I like that. It's the big blue band here. Plays the fight songs. They finish up their show here at halftime, the TNT Fireworks Halftime Show.
We're with Mr. Bill Hawkins, the superintendent of Florence City Schools. And Mr. Hawkins, before I let you go, I know you do a lot of things for the school, a lot of different hats you're wearing. Every time I'm around, you're somewhere. I see you all the time. But here tonight, what about this crowd? What about the support? This is what you want to see in the future, isn't it? Well, it absolutely is. I sat there, and I had my wife beside me, and I looked across the stands.
And right before kickoff, as I get chills down my legs talking about this, I said, this is what high school athletics is about. This is what high school football should look like. Two communities coming together, doing battle on the field. I mean, it is unbelievable. And I don't know that there's an open seat or standing area in this stadium. Well, Coach, if you do me a favor as we speak with Mr. Bill Hawkins, superintendent of Florence City Schools, first of all, thank you again for being our guest.
Will you do me a favor and just take some of this energy that you've got and throw it into that Falcon offense there and that Falcon defense for the third quarter? We need that a little bit, don't we? Absolutely. If you wouldn't recognize the shortest guy out there, I'd suit up. I believe you would. Hey, I'll tell you what, it won't be your last time to be with us here on the TNT Fireworks Halftime Show. Thank you for coming over, being a part of it. And congratulations on being a part of Florence City Schools again, okay?
Well, thank you all for allowing me to be your guest. And go Falcons. Go Falcons. That's Mr. Bill Hopkins, the new superintendent here at Florence City Schools. He is going to be a great one, I guarantee you. We've had some great ones in the past and another great one again. We're at the half on the TNT Fireworks Halftime Show. Florence and Muscle Shoals scoreless. We're back in one minute. Carbine Construction is honored to be a part of building projects with the Florence City School System. Welcome to a Falcon Moment, your host, Kevin Johnson, and joined now by the head volleyball coach of the Florence Falcons, Coach Caitlin Pedersen, and Coach Pedersen, welcome. How are you doing today? Doing pretty good. Just, you know, having my coffee, we're good. Yeah, getting the coffee, we're having an early morning start as we do our Florence Falcon Moment segment, and you know, as we get ready for the week, you've got a lot going on, and when's your next match, by the way, coming up?
We play at Lexington on Thursday, so it's kind of a low-key week, but I think we're okay with it, because we have a busy week going next week, and had a busy week last week. So, just Lexington this week on the schedule. And then next week who? Just a lot of games? And then next week we have Russellville as our area game for next week, and then we also play a triad or quad, or I can't remember. A bunch of matches. Yeah, and then we have a tournament the next Saturday, so next week we'll be busy, so.
Very good. So, we speak with Coach Caitlin Pedersen, volleyball coach at Florence High School. How long have you been coaching volleyball, and how'd you get your start here? Coaching volleyball 10, 11 years now, but coaching at Florence is a year two for me. So, prior to this, I've been a college volleyball coach since pretty much I graduated my college. I was a student assistant for the men's program at my school, and then just kind of stuck with the college game. Didn't think I was going to, but that's how I ended up, and now we're here.
And 10 years later, I'm coaching high school volleyball. Wow, that's incredible. What is the transition like from college to high school and coaching? I know it's got to be a little bit of a transition. It's been honestly a huge transition. I did not anticipate, you know, all the background things that go into it, and, you know, you have a little bit more respect for the high school coaches out there when you step into it. But, I mean, it's been great. You're pouring into athletes in a different way in their transformative years.
So, it's definitely different, but, you know, I've really enjoyed it. Speaking with Coach Caitlin Pedersen, the volleyball coach at Florence High School, team's off to a pretty good start, including a big win over Muscle Shoals. Yes, last week was great. First game back in the Dome. I know we had some alumni that had played in the Dome a long time ago that got to witness that, and it was just a really special moment. One for the girls, we've kind of been struggling, you know, getting in some holes and fighting our way out of it, and we started kind of low, and they stayed the course the whole time and just trusted the process, and that's kind of been what we talked about all year so far is just trusting the process, and you know, why not us, and why can't we do it, and I'm really proud of them.
What do you like about your team so far? Oh, they test my patience more than anything, but they are, you know, they're a good group of kids. They're funny. You know, they make me laugh. They're just a good group, and you know, I could ask them to do the silliest thing, and they just kind of have bought in, and they're like, okay, we're going to do it. So pretty good chemistry then. Yeah, yeah. It's taken us a minute to get there. I mean, you know, when you step into a program and rebuilding process, and you know, there's a lot of kinks you've got to work through, but I think we're finally hitting that curve and hitting the mark.
A few of your players have stood out so far, including Kinsley Gunn and also Landry Kilpatrick. Just a few. It's good to have some of those kids step up. Yeah, we have a strong group of six seniors this year. Landry and Kinsley, I mean, Kinsley is our hammer. She puts the ball away for us and does a fantastic job, and she's really evolved as a player and really honestly, just the past year, and Landry's been setting for this program since I've known about Florence, so she's worked really hard to, you know, make a name for herself, you know, and then we also had the additional Percy Carson, who transferred in, and she has been a game changer for us in the libero position, just defensively being able to keep balls in play.
So between those three, and then the younger pieces that we've had, we've been able to kind of glue it together, and you know, I'm really, really proud of that senior class, and I'm excited to see what they continue to do. Speaking with Kaitlin Peterson, the head volleyball coach at Florence High School, and coach, before I let you go, I'm going to ask you, you have a volleyball background, you played in college in Erskine and South Carolina, Division II, but what is this game, the game of volleyball, what does it really mean to young ladies like these high school girls?
It's special, isn't it? Yeah, absolutely. When I got the job, you know, I said, the reason I'm not doing it for, you know, fame or have my name called out or money or anything like that, I'm doing it to give kids an opportunity to, you know, excel at the highest level. And then also, you know, that sometimes athletics is all you have. And so being able to step into, you know, an environment that you're loved, cared about, and supported, and you're also able to have fun and win matches is my goal.
Give them opportunity and give them opportunity to go at the next level, whether it's, you know, just playing in volleyball in school and at the next level, that's fantastic. If they don't do that, preparing them for, you know, leaving Florence and excelling at the next level in school. Before I let you go, you and your husband have a little three-year-old. Can you give a shout out to your three-year-old girl, what her name is? Yes, it's Kai, and she is everything and more, and hopefully she'll be a little falcon when we get there.
[2:17:41] She just got her first shout out as a falcon today. That's Coach Caitlin Peterson, the volleyball coach at Florence High School. We wish them the best the rest of the season. Get out and support the volleyball team. They would love your support as well, I'm sure. And we can go Falcons, okay? Yes, absolutely. Go Falcons. You're listening to the TNT Fireworks Halftime Show. No representation is made that the quality of legal services to be performed is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers. Falcons are on the road tonight, and right now, it's not been the best. Not bad, but not great, because we're scoreless, zero to zero with muscle shows across the river. Here in the TNT Fireworks Halftime Show, Kevin Johnson, Mike Albertson, Jeffrey Jones, John McDaniel with you.
Our stats are brought to us by our good friends at Chick-fil-A, who's open for a while tonight. And John, these stats may not take long. Well, it's what you would expect from a defensive showdown. So let's start with the home Trojans tonight, an even 100 in the first half, 55 yards rushing on 15 carries, 45 yards passing, 7 completions on 12 attempts, 6 first downs in the half, 2 for 7 on third down conversions, 0 for 1 on the fourth down conversions, 1 assessed penalty for 5 yards, 2 turnovers, of course, no PATs, and the time of possession, 11 minutes, 26 seconds.
Falcons in the half, 53 yards. They had 33 yards rushing on 14 carries, 3 for 10 passing for 20 yards. We had 3 first downs in the half, 1 for 7 on third down attempts, and 0 for 1 on a fourth down conversions. If the Falcons win this game tonight, you can go back to a young man that plays running back named Kayon Williams, who after a bad snap runs back to the end zone with 6 Trojans or 7 Trojans chasing him. He got it out of the back of the end zone, Mike, to the one-foot line to save a safety.
Could be the difference in the game. It certainly could. And, you know, all these miscues in place, you know, it's not for lack of effort. These guys are laying it all out there. And that play is an example of just grit and fight. He was able to fight through a couple of arm tackles and really fought his way and barely got the nose of the football out of that goal line to get himself out and save the Falcons those two points. We were able to flip the field and kind of went into the half at Goose Egg.
So it's going to be an interesting second half for sure. Let's do our college picks. We'll throw a few of these in the next three minutes. Guys, I'll throw them at you. And I don't need a lot of detail, but just give me your thoughts on these. First of all, the big one for Auburn, they go over to Atlanta playing the Baylor team in that kickoff there. Unknowns for Auburn, the unknowns for Baylor. What do you think about that, Jeffrey? Who do you think of liking the game?
I hate the fact that it's playing in Atlanta, but I wish it was a home game for Auburn. I think that would be more advantageous for them. I'm going to take Auburn. I'm going to disagree, by the way. I think it's a better thing than the heat they're playing indoors tomorrow. I think that's going to be a big factor to get to play out of that heat. So as the fans, I know they're liking that, probably thinking, yeah, you know, it's not too bad. All right, what do you think there, John?
I have no idea. I will take – who's officially the home team? Auburn will be the home team. Give me the home team. Okay, what about Mike? I'm going to take Auburn as well and open up the goal share era with a victory. I really like Alan Scullers. I don't know what the season will end like, but I like him as an Auburn fan, and most Auburn fans do because he has really shown that he is an excellent coach and does the right thing. So Auburn all the way across the thing here.
Hey, what about Louisville and Ole Miss playing Sunday night? Who do you like in that one, JJ? I'm going to take Ole Miss in that one. Okay. John? Absolutely. Hotty-totty. All right. Mike? I mean, let's just stick with the SEC. Go Ole Miss. Guys, I'm going with Louisville. I think Louisville wins this game. Louisville has a lot of returning players, offensive line returns. I think it's a trap game more than you realize. I like Louisville to come away and pull the upset in weekend one over Ole Miss.
[2:22:44] And I know it's a big upset, but I've heard a lot of other pundits saying that, and I understand why. There's a lot of players returning for Louisville. There's going to be a big one as well. Clemson and LSU. Hey, they're playing. I hadn't heard anything about that. I hadn't heard anything about it. More than that, you know, if you are cheering for Clemson, raise your hand. Oh, wow. Everybody in the stadium just raised their hand. I don't think anybody's cheering for LSU. I am. You're cheering for LSU?
Yeah, absolutely. That surprised me there. I like it. I understand that. I'm sticking with SEC, man. I just said it. That's good. So we got LSU for you, Mike. Who do you like in this one, John? Give me the fighting Tigers of LSU. Yeah, I think so, too. I'll take the Tigers. Jeffrey, you'll finish it off. I think the sooner that LSU loses, which they're going to lose, but I think the sooner that LSU loses, it's kind of like the Deion effect. They're going to stop talking about Kiffin as much as they do.
I think this one, I think Dabo's kind of, I think he's been prepared. He's been doing, saying the right things, doing the right things. I'm going to take Clemson in this one. Wow. We're all hoping that's right. Yeah, I think if Dabo wins this one, he goes. Little old Dabo, little old Dabo. Yeah, he will become the hero for the weekend, that is for sure. We're at the half of the TNT Fireworks Halftime Show. Florence is scoreless with multiple shows. Both teams out warming up. Got one more moment before we go to break.
Hey, I want to give a quick shout-out to the cross-country boys and girls teams for the Falcons. They are in Fayetteville, Georgia, at the AT&T Stars Meals cross-country meet. They're going to be running tomorrow, both teams. I think Coach Miles said our boys' team is maybe number one in the state. Our girls are top five, or number three, actually. So good luck to them tomorrow, and my niece, Reese, best of luck. That's not easy to say, my niece, Reese. Say anything. Easier for me to say.
Yeah, that sounded better than it said. Sounded better than it did. That's good. Congratulations. Reese, I love you. Go ahead, girl. That's good for the Falcons that they're in the cross-country. We're at the half TNT Fireworks Halftime Show. Scoreless, we're back in one minute. This is Miranda Haddock with the Florence Education Foundation. We would like to extend an invitation to our ninth annual Salsa Showdown on Saturday, October 3rd, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Singing River Brewery. Restaurants and individuals from around the shows will compete to see who has the best salsa and queso.

This is Congressman Robert Adderholt. May God bless all of our students representing our high schools during this season, and may God bless the United States of America. I'm Robert Adderholt, and I approve this message. Paid for by Adderholt for Congress. As we close up the TNT Fireworks halftime show, getting ready for third quarter action, Kevin Johnson, Mike Albertson, Jeffrey Jones, John McDaniel, on the call scoreless here between these two powerhouses. And Mike Albertson, we can talk about all the adjustments you've got to make, but now it's starting to maybe be which team can break that goose egg will be the key.
Who can get ahead first? Somebody's got to make a play. Absolutely. You know, really and truly, if we're looking at this game, you know, Muscle Shoals could have had seven points. Florence could have had ten, but we're both at zeros. And the execution has not been fantastic. It's a hard-fought game. It's a little tight, calling it a little tight. So it's really, I mean, one of those things that, like, it might come down to not who executes better, but who makes the least mistakes. Florence will get the ball to start the third quarter.
They want to toss, and Bo Berski got the call on that. I don't know if you remember last year, I think we kept missing the toss. We lost every one. This year, I think we've done pretty good. So the Falcons get the ball to start the third quarter in this scoreless game. And don't forget the AHSAA scoreboard show from 10 to midnight here on 93.9, the score following our broadcast. And James Moody and Blair Krieger will give you all the updates on local scores as well. That's the AHSAA scoreboard show here on 93.9, the score from 10 to midnight.
Muscle Shoals will kick it off, and you have to be alert. They do a little bit different. They'll do sky kicks. They do anything they can to try to get you out of your system. So Florence is going to have to catch the ball. That's one of the big things. You've got to be alert here to everything and catch the ball and make sure you don't turn it over here and probably fair catch it. You just take it where it is. You take out the return guys and you should get that small kick there.
So we'll see how it plays out. The kicker for Muscle Shoals getting ready to line it up is Jaden Stewart, a junior. He'll get ready to kick it away. Back deep will be Williams and Goolsby. He lines it up, going to kick it towards the left sideline, it looks like. So you've just got to squeeze the pumpkin a little bit. Comes back to the right side and Goolsby's going to get a chance at the 12, 15, 20. To the right side, 25. He has good speed and will use it to get outside to the 30-yard line and drug out of bounds there.
[2:28:14] And Florence will have it first and 10 at the 30-yard line. 70 yards away in a scoreless game and wouldn't be anything better here than to get a drive down the field, put one in the end zone and take a lead. That would be huge for the Falcons. Costin Mahan's going all the way at quarterback, the sophomore. Facing against this fast, fast defense from Muscle Shoals. Williams will be the tailback. Green out wide right. Goolsby out wide left. Two tight ends, blank in there and we'll get the other one in a minute on this first and 10 play.
Pistol formation going to the right side and there's Williams. Got a little bit of a hole to the 25. Stays on his feet, 35 to the 40, excuse me. And that'll be enough for a first down as he blows by for 12. Best run of the night right there, maybe. Absolutely. You know, Williams is very explosive. He's gotten a little bit of rhythm. You're starting to see him getting the flow of the game a little bit. Being able to feed him on first down and him get a first down is a great way to open up the half.
And Mitch Boyd over there with a pretty good job blocking on that right side. Yeah, good job by the old line coming out in the first play. First and 10. Two tight ends, one to each side. This time going to the right side and they were right there but he breaks the tackle to the 45, to the 49. Give him about eight or nine. That was all Mr. Williams right there. Kayon was hit in the backfield and just broke through two would-be tacklers. Yeah, he's a strong runner. Very rarely does the first guy get him down and he's really showing some power for a young man.
Gain of about seven second down and three. Approaching midfield here. Just starting third quarter. No score in the game. It's both teams threatened but neither can score in the first half. Williams to the right of the quarterback, Mayhand, on his second down three play. Again, going to look to pass through the out-pattern incomplete. Pritchard was jumping the route there. It's good that Mayhand threw that one away or that could have been a disaster. Yeah, that was not, that was clearly a design but the design was not there.
It definitely covered up and we're lucky that one sailed into the stands. He's not threatening number, that was for number eight and he is not threatening their number two downfield at all and he is sitting very hard underneath routing. Now Green will come left and Pritchard will come to covering. Back in the backfield this time, I believe it's Johnson in the third and three play. Going to leave it with Johnson off the right side. Cut, got close to the mark but he's going to be about a yard short.
He'll be inside Muscle Shoals territory at the 49. Now depending on what Kenny Marston wants to do, will he let Mayhand and the offense stay out there and decision time right here, Mike? Looks like they're going to go for it, KJ. Fourth and one at midfield. You could go for the hard count here. Under center? Could. You got a nose guard over there right now that's about 290 pounds that's in the game. Florence will stay in the shotgun formation. No, they're going to center with an eye set.
Mayhand, going to leave with his tailback. Got the first down across the 50 to the 48-yard line. That's enough to move the chains just enough but a good play right there right off the left side there and Johnson got the first down. Hold up a second. He marked it for… The official on the other side marked the first down and they're moving the chains. Jeffrey, we're going to have to work on the marks. We're not getting the best spots right now. James F. Morris, isn't that Ogle Jr.?
Ogle Jr., there you go. You're right. We're not getting the best spots in the world but so far, pretty good called game. Oh, it is. Tejada and Boyd in at tight end. Now, actually, Boyd's going to go back and play fullback on this. On first and 10 play, I said under the formation again. This time, going to lead with his back off the right side and just cuts forward and gets back to the line of scrimmage with Johnson. Not much running room there. Looking for something to go but just nothing there.
You know, this Trojan team, give them credit, Mike, they have filled the gaps. Yeah, this is a well-coached team and definitely a lot of athletes with a lot, a lot of experience. So, you know, we knew that this was going to be a tough defense to go against and traditionally just very solid and we're not opening up the holes like we used to. So, it's been tough. They're filling the gaps well but Florence is going to have to keep grinding. Williams in left with the quarterback and shotgun formation is May in on the second down 10 play.
Going to leave it with Williams off the right. Cuts back to forward and not much room there. He's hit and made a wall to gain a one. He was trying to cut against the grain but he's pushed back. A host of Trojans including Marcus Johnson on the tackle. 17 has been everywhere. And a late flag and that could be against the Trojans. I think they pushed off of him getting up off the pile. No, there was a Muscle Shoals player that actually re-engaged with Williams and stuck his helmet in the air after he walked away.
Right in front of the white hat. That would be a big break for Florence who would be facing about third and 11 instead. Now, it's looking to be a first down waiting on the call here. He comes and looks dead ball unsportsmanlike against the Trojans. That's a huge penalty. Mike, if you're Florence, you've got to take advantage of this right here. Absolutely. Every time that there's a mistake, you've got to take advantage. That's what good teams do. So, they'll mark off the penalty. We'll put it inside the 40.
[2:33:34] Jeffrey Jones, now you're getting it down to around the 35-yard line. In a game like this, we'll take it any way we can get it. We're going to get it on the 33. And that'll move the chains. First down. That'll move the chains as well. And the crowd for Florence still into it over there. I mean, they're packed from one end to the other and standing around the fences. High school football at its best. Mahan has Williams behind him on the first and 10 play at the 33. He has a wide out to the left and one to the right.
Goolsby's wide right. Two tight ends set. Going to leave it with Williams off the right side. Looking, cuts forward and got maybe two. Stays on his feet and bounces forward but he only gets two before he's brought down. Second down and eight. He runs hard, doesn't he, Mike? He didn't run like a sophomore. Oh, he definitely does not run like a sophomore. He definitely pins his ears back and tries to get downhill right away. And he hit that hole hard and he got hit hard. So, it's been a tough battle for both teams thus far.
John, do you like the balanced tight ends right now to try to maybe get a little edge on one side or the other? I would like to see us push out for the C and D gaps outside the tackle and tight end. We're really running more like in between the guard and tackle and there's just not a lot of room so far. Play clock at 10 on the second down and eight play. Mahan now gets Todd in motion to the left and right behind the center. We're going to leave it again with Williams looking for running room.
He's hit. Nowhere to go. He gets to the 30 and brought down there. Gain of one maybe. I don't know how the quarterback gets hit every play. He got hit seven yards deep after the handoff. Was not engaged in the play at all but still wound up on the turf. And now let's make sure Williams is okay. Everybody get up slow. Let's check. They're blowing the whistle. A helmet come off excuse me for the Trojans and that's their big linebacker and Johnson who have to come out on this third and seven play.
So they'll have to bring in a substitute. Keep an eye on that as they go to their substitute here. Third and seven. Four down territory for Florence. Cal Madden will come in for the Trojans. Mahan with Tejada and tied in. Going to leave it with his back again. Come back left. Got to cross. Push it far but not much running room. Stays on his feet but couldn't get away. He was trying to pull out of there but he's not down at the 27. Gain of about three or four and he'll bring up we'll call it fourth and well fourth and four and maybe even fourth and five and Falcons will go for it at the own 28 yard line.
They have to touch just past the 24 to get a first down. We still have not seen the hard count guys. I wonder if that might come here. Be a really good time to use it. Fourth and four. I haven't seen where the offensive line shifts either but neither team both teams have done it in the past but they haven't done it yet. Play clock down to 11 down to 10 a little confusion by the Falcons I don't like that there. Now Tejada will go in motion again. Going to leave it with Williams and nowhere to go.
Got hit in the backfield. They read that from the stretch. The big nose guard just beat everybody came right up the middle in Houston at 290 pounds made the tackle and the Falcons will turn it over and right now scratching the head a little bit can't find anywhere to throw the ball can't find anywhere to run the ball you're in a little bit of trouble Mike. Yeah I mean look they're doing a great job on defense of really taking away what we're strong at and you know we've got to adjust and really execute some of those plays that they're not expecting at that point but just running between the tackles right now there's not much to be had.
No variation really on that set of downs. Those just joining us we're still scoreless. No score in the first half and 6-0-9 to go here in the third quarter and no score again. Somebody trying to break this deadbolt of 0-0. Hand off on the inside for the Trojans and Jaden White says nope you're not going anywhere either. No game maybe one at Matt at best. That was a good play there by Florence's White and friends and the Heat timeout taken we'll do the same. 5-54 to go in the third scoreless still this is Falcon Football we're back in 30.
Hey Falcon fans this is Keith Cypress Creek Indoor Range we know great defense starts up front and the Falcons start with Jaden White a defensive tackle whether stopping the run or disrupting that quarterback Jaden has the right tools puts in the hard work and has the right training to stop the offensive threat of opposing teams. Let Cypress Creek Indoor Range provide you with the tools training and resources to defend your family for the biggest gun store in the Shoals and the only indoor shooting range and training center to provide everything you need to have the best defense for your family.
Cypress Creek Indoor Range is located at 5060 Highway 157 in Underwood Petersville on the web at cypresscreekrange.com and on social media. Go Falcons! Scoreless in the third quarter midway third quarter is worth the heat timeout 554 to go in the third no score by either team both teams have threatened both teams have missed field goals both teams have missed potential possibly plays that could have scored but now which team will blink first and this Trojan team has weapons including Pritchard and Samples the wide receivers that's the ones you got to keep an eye on quarterback Smothers with one back in the backfield and the Falcons moved they went to a hard count and that time they did what I thought the Falcons might do on fourth down got the five yards so second and nine goes to second and four Jeffrey Jones it's which team can make a play here somebody's got to you know defense is showing up but we're going to have to get our composure and keep it especially out of timeouts second down and four after the five yard penalty at the 36 yard line we call it the 37 yard line excuse me three wide outs to the right one in motion to the left quarterback Smothers wants to pass looks to throw and can't now he's looking to throw and he just throws it in the dirt flag on the play good defense by Rayner he come up off the safety position corner position really read the play well and then four Smothers have to throw it away and let's see what the penalty was that was a great job by the Falcon defense to diagnose that right away they stayed in their coverage lanes and really left nothing for Smothers to do they forced that incompletion they're going to wave the flag off that was a just honestly that was a very odd play from the Trojans they had nobody blocking to the right and then sprinted right and were going to throw right the Falcons were overloaded with personnel hopefully they'll run that play again third and forward they waved the penalty off the official on this side did stay stay in your gaps don't jump they're going to work on it again play clock just getting started at 30 game clock in this scoreless game 521 here in the third quarter two wide outs left one to the right is Samples one back in the backfield for the quarterback Smothers he brings Pritchard in motion he rolls to the right looking to throw to Pritchard now we have to throw down the field to Samples and he's got him at the 40 and he caught it to the 35 down to the 30 and down to the 25 and brought down by a couple of Falcons he kept dragging that defender and finally Irons had to come and help out and brings him out of bounds at the 25-yard line and that time I think the Trojans may have caught the Falcons with a little substitution in there and they took advantage of it Samples was kind of running out wide open there he made a great move had a nice look at the ball there Smothers delivered a beautiful ball and then our DB just couldn't bring him down he was just outsized at that point at the 24 big gain and now the Falcons jump offsides again giving them 10 yards and Jeffrey Jones this is not what you want if you're Florence in this scoreless game here in the third quarter they're hyped up about it too most shows is very fundamental they did not lose any fundamentals when they lost space and that's for sure momentum is on this side over here with the team in black and red right now 5-10 to go in the third who's going to be the guy that makes a big play here the back in the backfield I can't get the number there if y'all can help me out I think it's low number four but we'll check it first and five at the 19 Smothers the quarterback going to leave it with this back is actually coming outside and not much running room for Reynolds there number nine he gets about a yard coming up making a tackle coming up off the bottom pile and whistles is there a whistle a flag or just whistles he's stopping there Burski on the bottom of the pile along with Nate Pryde it's number two for most shows he's he hasn't stopped all the game he is second down and four at the 18 yard line no score but the Trojans knocking on the door two wide outs left one to the right samples one back again Smothers going to leave with his back off the right side he's going to try to bounce it he's in trouble he got away got to the sideline and got the first down Falcons had him and he used the speed and the little in and out move got him the move he needed and he got to the 14 our linebacker lost the angle on that tackle there and let him go right up the sideline it was a miscue there by the Falcons so first and ten as Reynolds got the run at the 13 yard line and Trojan is really knocking on the door here and this Falcon team for the first time looking a little tired who can make play three wide outs one tied in again they're going to leave Smothers he gets in the middle and gets hit at the 10 Irons brings him down after a gain of three and this is where Smothers is so dangerous John as a quarterback he loves to keep the ball and make plays we've been running yeah they've been running the dive play we had a little action after the play making sure no flags he's been running the dive and keying on the running back and that last second pull is super tough to see and it's even tougher to defend Jones comes out of the game second down at seven Samples is the wide receiver to the right play clock at 10 wouldn't be surprised if they go into the endzone for a touchdown pass here attempt Smothers back to pass looking right glitz coming he rolls throws to the right and it's incomplete in and out of the hands of his intended receiver at the five yard line the pressure caused a lot of that and really good pass defense well yes they really flushed the quarterback out of the pocket a little bit the pass was delivered behind the wide receiver and dropped on the turf but the Falcons were all over that one right here in front of our vantage point going to the right away from the school board at James F. Moore Stadium 335 to go in the third no score one wide out left one to the right one more receiver in there is Pritchard with the play clock at 10 they just get the play in Reynolds is the back here comes the Falcons fans and band trying to make some noise on this third down play and timeout taken by the Trojans will do the same 335 to go in the third scoreless but the Trojans knocking on the door Falcon football is back in 30 it's football time in Alabama our students are learning big American lessons you can start with your God-given talents and through practice hard work and sacrifice you have the ability to become champions this is congressman Robert Adderholt may God bless all of our students representing our high schools during this season and may God bless the United States of America I'm Robert Adderholt and I approve this message paid for by Adderholt for Congress back here to change up for stadium where Muscle shows in Florence are scoreless midway or even late third quarter 335 to go in the third but Muscle shows has marched it down the field with a big pass play and a couple penalties against Florence helped keep the drives alive and now they face third and seven at the ten Mike do they put it in the air again or do they play it safe and maybe play for the field go you know in a game like this one play can make a big difference I say take a shot in the end zone if I'm that the Falcon crowd is loud across the way they're getting with it Jeffrey here we go third and seven Smothers Falcons back out of the blitz show it again back out again and they move it against Muscle Shoals that time the Trojans moved and that's a five yard penalty and that's a big penalty Falcons kept jumping a little bit there kept going in and out and it forced the offense to move you get down in that in that crouch in that position for a little while and you get a little weary especially later in the game and having those guys you know you got to get off the snap quick so just to force a little issue and they did they hopped offside remember Pritchard is at the wing back Samples is to the right in the short side of the field but watch Pritchard here he's the one to keep an eye on third and 12 going to look to pass going out he has to get rid of it and just throw it away he had Burski back there picking his nose and picking his pocket he didn't have a choice he had to get rid of it yeah that was a great job by Burski Smothers had no opportunity to deliver a ball there he just threw it away and it's going to be a fourth down big play here Jaden Stewart who missed a field goal earlier will attempt from the right hash a 32 yarder Kevin Kevin I think is that Mason McBride is that 89 or am I 29 oh I'm sorry 29 is the kicker will attempt the kick from the right hash to give the Trojans a lead good snap good hole the kick is on the way and that time he put it up and he missed it he missed it it went right Jeffrey Jones was right there at it and JJ you're the first one to say no no no he just pushed it right he had the distance and just pushed it right that was a huge stop for the Falcon defense they are all still here and they're loud man the momentum swings this defense for Florence bend but not break Mike this game has got to be if you're coaching this game it's got to be the most stressful game neither team is playing well and miscues and all all the other things but it's such a hard fought battle every single call matters the Falcons need to flip the field position as much as anything right here first and 10 at the 20 for the Falcons Williams Kayon Williams is the tailback going to leave it with Williams off the right side got running rim to a 25 30 breaks a tackle and got to the 32 spins out to the 34 lost his helmet that's 14 we'll take it he got popped and the helmet come off but that's enough for a first down he's getting his helmet and keeping his composure I like that move the chains he's kind of lucky that he didn't get stomped on on that play because his helmet came off before he hit the turf and there was a couple guys that jumped on the pile at the 13 yard game to the 33 he was about a step away from getting loose to the right Gouldsby and Elliot to the left is green need maybe Elliot to get loose he would be one that can make a catch or two first down play going to lead with the back pushing forward and scoots forward that's Johnson got loose to the 40 Johnson to the 42 and finally Pritcher brings him down around enough for another Falcon first down give him a gain of 13 he just sort of did what you said last week Mike he hid behind that offensive line and got loose he found a nice little tight hole that he could squeak through and made a guy miss he just burst through that line big gain here for the Falcons scoreless here in the third quarter with Florence and also shows 248 and counting with Florence with back to back first down so put it out to the 45 yard line Johnson will stay in the ball on the left hash going right to left as you listen may hand the quarterback against a four man front going to leave it with Johnson give him eight and all of a sudden the Falcon offensive line making something happen and so is those offensive running backs absolutely and you know this was going to come into be a factor later on when you're grinding out this run game like this and just pounding on the defense over and over again after a while you start getting some rubbery legs there on the defense and it might be happening might be a deal where they're kind of running second down and two for the Falcons could take a shot here we'll see going to leave with Johnson again he cuts back against the grain but boy what a great open field tackle there by Johnson Marcus Johnson came up and a great open field tackle and in the secondary Goolsby got pushed away but the officials just break it up and didn't say anything but the Trojans nearly got a 15 yarder in the secondary should have been third and two at the 47 you hear the Falcon fans across the way booing that they'll mark it at the 48 third and two and a half maybe and with 132 and counting in the third both crowds coming to their feet welcome to high school football play clock at 10 I have to burn a time out I think so I wouldn't hurry up on this one whether going to try two three two I just call the time out the veteran coach says no no no this is important 113 to go still scoreless in the third Falcons have the football third and three when we come back after this 32nd message Florence more information back here on 93-9 the score Kevin Johnson Mike Albertson Jeffrey Jones John McDaniel Weeton 113 to go in the third it is a defensive struggle 0-0 Florence though has the ball at the 48 of Muscle Shoes facing third and three they have to just get right at the 45 to get the first down and it'll be Williams in at tailback in that shotgun formation Goolsby and Elliott wide to the right let's see boy you might get a tiny and down the seam open too let's see on this third down play he can't get there excuse me back to the line of scrimmage got tripped up once again just too much penetration by the Trojans it brings up fourth down you got to punt it away I think it's the right call to punt it away your defense has played well they have been with their backs to the wall a lot and come away with no points Greenhal needs to punt it away and this time the dangerous Pritchard back I hope the Florence coaching staff sees that he is a dangerous returner I'd really like to see Greenhal punt it to the right but Florence goes in a little motion on trying to get the Trojans to jump they don't as they motion back into the regular punt formation good snap no pressure gets it away that's a great punt going to go over Pritchard's head bouncing into the end zone and that will be a touch back best putty add but too good and they'll give the Trojans an 80 yard feel don't forget the AHSAA scoreboard show following our broadcast tonight here on 93.9 the score from 10 to midnight and in the 93.9 the score studios our studio host James Moody and Blair Krieger giving you all the scores from around the shows area that's AHSA scoreboard show here on 93.9 the score well we said which team will blink first maybe a turnover would be a big thing right here if you could get that ball somehow that would be big but give both teams credit they have really taken care of it for the most part after the first quarter jitters one back in the backfield is Reynolds again Reynolds going to get it try to cut back against the grain and the Falcons were there he skips out of a tackle though and gets across the 30 and steps out of bounds at the 32 flag back behind the play though and that looks like it's in the position of holding and that will take that one back I do believe it's thrown around the 23 yard line and that one they gate that yard gain of about 10 so a big penalty there with 14 seconds to go in the third and sometimes you need a break like that Mike that's a big break for Florence absolutely anytime the flag goes in your favor that's beneficial it'll push it back to the 13 and the Trojans won't have to run another play if they don't want to let's say they're going to go ahead and get under snap no they're not going to start the clock to run one more place first go Smothers going to leave with his back again skipping jumping trying to get outside and the Falcons string him out and push him out around the 13 no gain he's out of bounds with seven seconds to go in the third Rainer coming up from the safety position making the play John John you and I have watched this Smothers kid at quarterback and tape on the first game he's pretty slick and he can throw the little jump pass sometimes you gotta be aware for everything he's a terrific athlete may have a future in college playing quarterback he can do it both he is way faster than you think he is he's probably 6'3 but if he gets in the open field the Falcons will have a tough time catching second down and 17 for the Trojans from their own 14 he's in shotgun formation with Reynolds behind him two wide out to the right one to the left gets the snap going to leave it with Reynolds no he's going to keep it and there's Martinez to wait on him and brings him down at the 15 after a gain of two good job of the Falcons and Irons come to make the play and three quarters are in the books no score through three this is Falcon football we're back in one minute the voice of the Florence High [2:57:45] Moore Stadium No score as we go to the fourth quarter in this rivalry game and the Falcon fans have been well they've been amazing but so have both defenses here the Falcon fans on his third and 14 across the way as Jeffrey Jones turns on his mic right in front of the nest they're from top to bottom they fill up an entire section it's third in at least 15 Trojans have to get to the 30 I love it this is what high school football sounds like others will have him Falcon show blitz long count he gets the snap wants to pass looking has time now he's flushed out of the pocket rolling to his left nowhere to go he wants to throw on the run and does and it's knocked away and nearly intercepted and is by Burski flags on the play though Burski has the interception and now they call it dead but they're going to call an interference call over here right in front of the Muscle Scholes bench who came up there and said we've got interference and I think that's going to give the Trojans a first down I'd like to know where the interference see what they say that's interference against Florence and it's an automatic first down tough tough call and it gives Smothers he kept the play alive he kept rolling and he had a man open on the sideline it was close but it was a penalty thrown I think the Muscle Scholes coaching staff influenced that a lot too it's right along the edge there and the head coach was right in his ear as that was being thrown it'll move it out to the 30 yard line first and 10 after third and 15 that's a huge break for the Trojans Kenny Morrison all the way out to the numbers wanting to find out what that call was for he wants to know what happened on the sideline but he's not going to be given the answer he wants on the right hash first and 10 for the Trojans here in the fourth quarter no score 1150 to go Reynolds is the tailback for Smothers the quarterback Smothers going to leave it with Reynolds up the middle and not running room there he has stopped for a gain of two he keeps pushing forward flag on the play he's still pushing forward up to about seven or eight and finally another flag on play not sure what that was another flag so we've got flags multiple and I don't know this one comes from the Muscle Shoals sideline which never is a good thing because somebody on the Muscle Shoals bench was screaming something so they got a flag on one side and a flag on the other now there was a Muscle Shoals player that was holding the running back that's the one that that's the one I saw called that's helping the runner number five Muscle Shoals holding let's see what the call is you got two flags on the play face mass against Florence but also helping the runner against Muscle Shoals they're all setting first and 10 at the 30 I don't think I've ever seen Kevin have you seen assisting the runner in high school yes but I'm a lot older than you are hadn't seen it in a while since they changed the rules let me say it that way in the college you see it all the time but if you pull them if you pull them forward it's illegal and I think that's what started happening yeah his the guy that got flagged his rear end was towards the end zone and he was dragging him towards that area Smothers the quarterback will bring Pritchard in motion to the right Falcons sound a little confused get their defense set straight drop looking right wants to throw steps up in the pocket now Smothers wants to run to the 33 hit hard by irons and finally brought down to the 34 gain of about three or four he spun off irons but somebody cleaned him up on the far side I think it was Winkles and brings up a second down and six to go in the fourth quarter with 1125 and counting no score for either team in this scoreless big first game in region play don't forget next Friday night Florence will travel to Russell who is on their way to be and one and one and 0 as they lead Hartzell 35-14 on the road Kevin a quick stat between the two teams through three quarters we had 254 yards defensive stalemate Florence jumped off sides the count got Florence there and he couldn't hold his water as they say and that's a five yard to make it second down and one and those fatigue a little bit Mike when you have that those hard counts get those big guys a little bit in a game that's this closely matched you're trying to get every advantage possible so you know getting off the ball super quick plus being a little fatigued could be a factor in that second down and one at the 39 10-46 and counting in the game in regulation I should say with no score smothers the quarterback wants to pass looks to throw the swing pass out here complete to Ware who caught it juggled it and goes down immediately by Rainer who comes up from his safety position and hammers him for a four yard loss what a play by the safety there that was a great job by Rainer he saw it right away he was darting in and as that ball was received he was already making the tackle that was a great play third and five don't jump off sides that would be my first thing on the hard counts third and five and the Falcons students and band and fans over there they're doing all they can it's good to be able to hear the high school bands in the stadium isn't it Kevin it's a great thing everybody sort of bunched in for the Trojans down this third and five straight drop throwing the quick out to Samples who breaks a tackle up to 40 and got the first down and pushed out of bounds at midfield Rainer had to push him out of bounds that's a pretty slick little play right there to come to a bunch set and it gives him a lot more field to run out there and he used it to his advantage he certainly did made a man miss kept his feet almost got his feet drug out from other them kept his feet there and really completed that first down good play by Muscle Shoals there first and 10 just outside the 50 they're at their own 48 yard line with 947 and counting no score but the Trojans have it close to midfield Smothers going to give it inside to his back he wants to keep it and he's going nowhere he gets knocked down for no gain Bursky and friends and irons they read that one well only a gain of one boy we have called Bursky's name a whole lot with irons tonight you know you can see Muscle Shoals changing some things up a little bit putting the ball in Smothers hands a whole heck of a lot more he's both running and passing but he's been an integral part of each and every play second down and 9 Smothers going to leave it with his back no he rolls out to the right side ball came loose but the whistle was early and so it'll be no fumble it'll bring up third down and we'll call it six to go or five to go five to go at the 45 quarterbacks down coming up with a little bit of a limp and Smothers Muscle Shoals making me look like I know what I'm talking about yeah I was going to say like that you're all over what their play calls are there's both sides both the Trojans or the Falcons there's very little sledding inside the tackles so any type of gain is going we gained on the edge and Smothers has been doing a pretty good job quick huddle by the Trojans to the line of scrimmage on third and five don't jump they're going to leave it with their samples off the outside trying to break the tackle and does to the 41 pushes forward and may have the first down to 40 yeah he got it got tackled but he'll have enough for the first to move the chains let's wait and see if there's a penalty on the play the official here on the sideline says I think there's a penalty there's two flags and another flag no I think it was throwing that back to the other official I think one was being tossed back the white hat just threw it threw it at the line of scrimmage that was his flag it wasn't the other guys well we'll straighten this out at the conference at the 41 yard line you know one of them is going to be on us we don't want to be negative yet at the 41 would have been a first down for samples but let's wait and see what the penalty is it would be nice to be able to signal now he comes back to the middle of the field to talk to officials coach Darden don't look very happy he's he's saying that's a good thing over here he's not very happy in his white hat and white shirt here we go KJ white hat comes up illegal shift against muscle shows that's a five yarder and that's all and let's see what happens after the five yard mark out the five yard and that's it so it'll bring up third and nine at the 50 so maybe I was right maybe he was that's where I saw it for once third and nine at the 40 or at the 50 yard line and this is where the Falcon crowd can play a big factor in the Falcon band 828 and counting no score muscle shows facing third and nine at the 50 Smothers will put samples to the right Pritchard in the slot his brother on the left side is ledger Smothers one back in the backfield Falcons show four or five on the line of scrimmage Smothers give it inside to the back he's looking to run he cuts back but there's nowhere to go great open field tackle there by the Falcons coming coming back and making a play incredible play there was Nate Proud oh man what a big play by the defensive lineman got a flag a flag on the play is that late down the right sideline getting that hand and it's a play like that and you throw a flag on that it better be for sure that's all I'm going to say Florence has done so far a good job of controlling their emotions and they don't look they're very happy over in Muscle Shoes right now here comes the call the official says sideline warning against Florence that's only a warning so it'll be fourth down and ten for the Trojans JJ do me a favor tell all those coaches to go stand on the inch of the fence all 73 of them they don't listen very well I'll tell you that when I was coaching there we only had six coaches it wasn't hard to keep them all back and the Trojans will send the punt unit out but remember the quarterback is the punter with 755 to go in the game back deep will be Goolsby you've got to be really watching right here Smothers is a crafty guy they're still shifting around I don't like the way things are going right here fourth and ten I would definitely play safe if I was Florence but they've got nine on the line of scrimmage but I would back out of there a little bit good snap Smothers going to punt it be go in the game and scoreless I wouldn't believe you I wouldn't have believed you either but really and truly there should be points on the board both teams have not played their best game but in this rivalry matchup sometimes it gets down and dirty and real sloppy and whoever's going to come out with the least miscues is probably going to come away with this victory well we spread it out with four for the first time this half one back in the backfield with four wide outs Mahan looks to pass across the middle and it's caught there by Mays and he brings it in at the 32 and he's knocked down immediately that's a gain of about seven or eight right there big hit right there by the Trojans defender making the play coming up there was but Jackson Mays the senior with a gain of nine still haven't seen Morris who just joined the team this week he is an excellent wide receiver may not see him now Kirkman to the wide right the sophomore he has great speed now they go empty set they go around the quarterback draw and he pushes forward and got the first down did Mahan across the 37 to the 38 yard line just and that'll be enough to move the chains with 6.56 to go here in the game you got to start thinking now Parker Greenhall who missed one earlier does have good range I will say he told me earlier in the year hey I can get one from 50 but I would say 40 would be what I would say in a game like this Johnson's the tailback to the right of the quarterback Mahan on the first and ten play looks to throw the quick screen and oh dangerous play that was red out there incomplete Haddock was trying to block and that ball is incomplete you want to start opening the offense but at the same time Mike one goes the other way and the game's over maybe yeah absolutely you know it's one of those where you know you're trying to make something happen and soften this defense up a little bit but as you said you know one miss cue you let that ball slip a little bit and we're talking a whole different ball game right that's one miss block Kevin you're depending on a one on one block I want to see if we're going to throw it let's get in an open where Costin can do a little reading at least have a chance to be able to hit a guy downfield and I like to run the ball with the spread but have to hurry up with the play clock at five Mahan gets everybody set Goolsbee will come into motion got a snap and coach Kenny Morrison said nope I don't trust it I'm going to call timeout 626 to go in the game Florence and Muscle Shoals scoreless come back and see us in 30 you got a craving they won't quit Lost Pizza Company Shoals just dropped something new and it's only around for a limited time say hello to our jalapeno mac and cheese bites crispy cheesy packed with a little kick and serve with our house made ranch for dipping paired with the fillet y'all our loaded fillet cheesesteak pizza that's quickly becoming a fan favorite this is for a limited time only so don't wait come dine in or call ahead for to go Lost Pizza Company Shoals 201 North Seminary Street in Florence dine in or to go Kevin Johnson with you here on 93.9 to score Florence Muscle Shoals scoreless what a game it's been two heavyweights going at it and Florence has the ball now at the 39 yard line they'll face second down in 10 we're on the porch outside right next to the press box way up right here and great great look here we have it we're attacked by all the bugs that are flying around us too so we're doing our best we thought they were being hospitable and turn the lights on for us we didn't know that the bugs would come with it green wide left in the slot is maze to the right is Goolsby the play clock will start with one back in the backfield I think that's still Johnson on the second down 10 play Johnson's going to get it cut back against the grain trying to break a tackle but it gets knocked down around the 42 yard line so at the 42 it'll bring up third down and about eight to go Jeffrey Jones on the sideline it's just which team can make a play yeah it's like a big chess match down here you know you've got offenses that are just both not getting it down the field but in my opinion we're going to have to spread it out a little bit I think we need to throw it down field at least once you know let Colston use his arm a little bit just to get these eight guys out of this box well and it's huge or poison they're really good on the pass defense you've got to find out who do you want to go for and they've got a blitz coming here on this third and eight play straight drop blitz coming close across the middle incomplete it's going for Haddock Haddock wasn't there the defender came up wasn't close to it either and he brings up fourth and eight and with 542 to go Florence will punt it away you've got to be sound in the kicking game here boys and girls back deep will be samples that ball needs to be between the numbers and the sideline KJ I like it to be between the numbers that are on the receiver that's where I want it really more than anything put it there but it was hard to do the receiver sort of got caught in no man's land I don't touch me in the punt but oh yeah that too just get it away is what I say good snap gets rid of it good punt samples is going to let it bounce at the 20 he's going to get away from it it's going to take a Florence snub going to hang up right there at the 18 17 16 yard line and they'll have it marked at the 17 with 529 to go in the game at the 17 yard line they may have called that Florence timeout the heat timeout so we may not have another one I think Florence has two timeouts left Muscle Shows may have all three I'm not sure I can answer that question if they called the heat timeout then both teams have two timeouts if they called that for the Falcons of course they should just have the one first and 10 the Trojans bringing another tight end out there we haven't seen a whole lot but he's a big kid that's Keelan Jackson elicited at 5'8 he's all 6'3 first and 10 shotgun formation Smothers going to leave it with his back up the middle and nowhere to go the Falcon defense says no Jaden White comes up and says thank you no gain second down and 10 Jeffrey Jones a battle of wheels great job our defense front they're still hanging in there they're not overly tired yet notice Pritchard's not in the game right now he's having to play both ways and in the fourth quarter Mike that plays a factor oh it certainly does in this heat which isn't nearly as hot as it's been but still a lot to ask of the young man watch Smothers here I think he's going to pass it play action wants to throw quick out complete at the 30 to the 33 samples is loose at the 35 breaks the tackle to the 40 and falls down at the 47 he was nearly all the way on that one they mark him at the 45 that's a gain of about 27 and that's the biggest play and it was just a quick screen and one tackle broken there he went and he can make men miss he's a tremendous athlete and getting him in that open space that's what we're trying to do as well and it just hadn't worked out for us but great execution by Muscle Shoals Pritchard in the game with 440 and counting he's in the slot one back in the backfield Reynolds is the back going to run it to the right side he's going to try to cut stays on his feet across midfield hit right at midfield knocked down after a gain of four he just waited and was patient that time finally the Falcons linebackers and safeties come make the play brings up second down and six and the clock now becoming a factor with 4.15 to go in the game at the 49 yard line first and second down and six Reynolds will stay in at tailback in that pistol formation in the slot will be Pritchard and out wide right will be samples second down and six no score in the game play action pass looks and throw out here to Pritchard and he's hit immediately and brought down Dez Brown tattooed number two in white just said welcome to the game and Pritchard getting up slow good sportsmanship by Burski patting him on the head but Pritchard felt that one and is still feeling it coming out of the game third down and seven yeah it was a great job it was definitely red beautifully there and the Falcons came in put his helmet right on his hip bone it looked like so he's walking off gingerly it was a tough tough shot there play of the game right here 325 to go third and seven and the Falcon fans coming to their feet across the way JJ this is a loud crowd from the boys in blue third and seven they have to get this muscle shows to the 45 three wide outs right to the right gonna look to go to the right side gonna roll to the right looking nowhere to go and he's gonna hit knocked out of bounds no gain the Falcons string it out no gain it brings up fourth down with 304 to go what a job by that Falcon defense that was a great job by the Falcon defense it was uh you know they strung that out they were trying to get it around that edge and they just didn't give it to him John I'll be honest I thought it was a halfback pass I think you're right because I read it the same way because he did not make an effort to move up field I think it was a halfback pass and he just chose to eat the play so Smothers the quarterback will have to punt it away with 304 to go in the game back deep as Goolsby just stay away from the football right here just take the ball don't do anything crazy no tough rush good snap and Smothers will boot it away line drive out of bounds that's a good job for the Falcons they'll have it with 256 to go I think Mike it might be 35 40 it should be up to the 45 44 yard line so Florence will be 56 yards away with 256 to go again to set the scene no score both defenses have owned this game but Florence will have about 56 yards to go to possibly win it with 256 to go I think Florence has maybe two timeouts left something like that maybe one officially I've seen one but they could have given them one back and Muscle Shoals maybe with two left I think let's check the tailback will be the sophomore Williams he's been outstanding first and 10 at the 44 may hand the quarterback all he needs is just a step Williams cuts back looking found the step it's loose to the 45 to the 40 to the 30 to the 20 Keyon to the house touchdown Florence the sophomore electrifies the blue crowd no flies on the play KJ off the left side all he needed was a step and you give him three steps and you're going to regret it mister as Leonard Skinner would say Courtney Mahan just walked up to me right before that play and said 10 take it to the house right now I said I'll take it there he goes Courtney Mahan called that one I gave him credit ask him if he's got any power ball numbers 245 to go Greenhall with a very important extra point snap good hold good kick up kick it's good new score Florence seven muscle show zero 245 to go in the game Falcon Whataburger just like you like it 1554 Florence Boulevard 245 to go in the game Florence on one play 56 yards Kayon Williams the rookie the sophomore electrifies this crowd Florence leaves at 7-0 but it's not over yet Greenhall to boot it away high but hanging going to push back Pritchard to the 4 he's electric he's electric he's got to close him up up the middle looking for runner he's knocked down at the 22 and listen to the Falcon crowd Ward coming in to make the play along with Sistrunk and the Trojans have to go 77 yards to get a touchdown with 239 239 to go in the game Mike get your heart medicine ready here we go first and 10 at the 23 two to the right one to the left smothers the quarterback he's going to keep in his hands I'm sure straight drop wants to look to throw right now he's flushed out of the pocket rolling right going to be in trouble and had to throw it out of bounds incomplete he had white and irons a Jaden sandwich coming his way and he said I'm not wanting to be a part of the Jaden sandwich Mike no I don't I don't think I would like that either but you know he lived to play another down there wasn't much going for him and instead of taking a loss he just had that incompletion 232 to go the Falcon fans are going crazy they're doing their best to wheel this team through second down and 10 play clock at 15 they just get to play in Pritchard not in the game he got tattooed earlier that was a big play two to the right samples wide right Smothers long count trying to draw the Falcons offside it couldn't not have been late but they're going to give him the snap throws the quick out complete at the 29 and knock out about the 30 game about six I thought he was late getting it off I saw zero and it was still in the center's hands I thought and that's the back judge's call right there he has the play clock and so they look at the clock he sees zero and he's supposed to blow the whistle when he sees that ball not snap they gave him seven we'll call it third and three at the 30 with 226 to go in the game Pritchard back in the game he and Smothers will come wide to the left he's going to leave it with his back notice Smothers up the middle and he breaks the tackle at the 40 he's got the first down to the 42 this is going to be the Smothers show from here on out guys JJ I'll let you keep your mic off it's so loud it's distorted so it's going to be second down our first and 10 with 220 to go and I think you've got a couple of fans right close too they're giving us play-by-play first and 10 at the 42 out wide to the left now two wide receivers to the right look to pass to the right quick screen complete broke a tackle to Samples again knocked out of bounds after a gain of seven that's starting to work way too much Mike a gain of seven with 157 to go and the Trojans are at midfield yeah Samples is a tough out there for Muscle Shoals and anytime he gets the ball he's willing to you know he's a big strong runner so it's going to take a couple guys to bring him out and John you got it you can't bite on it because if you do they'll do the pump and go that's right the one thing you can't allow is people get behind you right now as a defense you'll give up plays just don't let them behind you second and three for Smothers the quarterback gets the snap looks right wants to throw now he's going to roll left to throw blitz is coming he's in trouble he goes down he's brought down knocks him back guess who again 26 have a game Bo Berski yeah that play was designed to roll right into that area Berski came at the right time it was a blitz play and they couldn't stop him Smothers got caught almost threw that one away almost just threw it up but Berski knocked him down third and 13 and the Trojans are going to have to go fast 127 to go Smothers straight drop looking left wanting to throw throws and it's knocked down at the line of scrimmage tipped there by the Falcons who came up and tipped it away that was Nate Pryde Nate Pryde does a great job of getting his hands up in that throwing lane he did that against Oxford a bunch of times last year you're seeing it again this year he's an excellent excellent down lineman fourth and 13 the Trojans have to get to the Falcons 48 they are at the 39 everybody in blue on their feet the Falcons sideline 117 to go Smothers straight drop against the three man rush he's going to be flush he's going to be rushed out of the pocket he's going to be knocked down he's going down I don't know how he escaped the blitz but Florence celebrating as they hold muscle shows and they'll have it first and 10 with 105 to go in the game there you have it you know the Florence defense answered the call once again big play after big play Smothers kept that play alive somehow and threw it up but the Falcon defense knocked it down they still have two timeouts so the Falcons are going to have to run a few plays to be able to timeout taken by Florence JJ you might find out how many timeouts both teams have while you're standing there yeah they got two left we're out and Florence is out of timeouts now we're going to keep it right here Coach Lawrence leads at 7-0 and the Falcon fans have not left but the Trojan fans are starting to file out fast it's not over yet though they certainly are you know Coach Morrison using his last timeout he's telling everybody called the whole sideline over to him to take a knee no silly penalties this is where emotions can get high this is post game too he's telling post game no we are not doing anything and that is a veteran coach right there he knows what's about to happen what could happen and he's warning his guys he's coaching them up but also saying hey let's go win this football game I'm a little surprised Kevin I gotta say it's not over yet Florence has to take care of the football and the two timeouts you can take a knee twice it'll be close it'll be close you gotta take care of the football that's the key you almost just run a play and fall down Johnson's the tailback the senior the two tight end switch and now the whistle flag offsides against Muscle Shoes that's five yards Goolsby says thank you very much as the tight ends moved the Trojans moved that's a help first and five 105 to go Jeffrey Jones it's pandemonium in Florence oh yeah it's exactly what we expected if we were going to win or you know if we were up this late no Pritchard in right now first and five Johnson still the tailback Johnson gets it up the middle he's hit hard he just needs to go down they try to strip him he goes down right at the line of scrimmage timeout taken immediately 58 seconds to go we'll take it with him Florence leaves at 7-0 with 58 ticks to go Falcon football back in 30 with with with locations in Tuscumbia Moore Stadium 58 seconds to go Florence defense just came up with a stop on fourth down they lead at 7-0 they had the ball second down and five at the 35 you know the Trojans are going to try to strip the ball they only have one timeout left I take a Kevin I like it I like just the quarterback don't get it out of his hands good snap gets it to Johnson he goes forward and he goes down don't spin just go down and he goes down to the 31 that scared the life out of me I saw that his arm extended away from his body a little bit and that is not what we need to be doing with this at this time second time out by the Trojans their last time out I believe is what Jeffrey Jones said JJ running sideline you said there are no more timeouts for them yep they're done so with 52 seconds to go on third down you really can't really take a knee if you take a knee you'd still have to run 25 seconds 30 seconds down so it's going to be really close you've got to run a play of some you get a first down and it's over obviously you've got to trust your guys to execute at this point they get the first down we don't have anything to worry about I let Costin run around and try to burn 5-6 seconds and then go down and you're going to almost you're going to have what 5 seconds left if you do that for 4th down I don't know Burski coming in on offense right here Burski in on offense and Jaden Irons for the heavy package yeah you got you got Jaden White as well Jaden White and Williams in at tailback and Jaden Irons at fullback on 3rd and 3 going to leave it right up the middle and Williams looks spans he's going down he'll take it down at the 35 but that ran enough clock down to 45 44 43 they just started the 42nd clock that should do it that should do it folks that should do it right there that should do it the clock is running oh they're going to get the one second they're going to stop the clock wait a minute Florence needs to step back because now they're changing in time the coach over here the referee excuse me the side judge was looking at the clock with the coach and there's going to be at least there should be 42 seconds extra 42 seconds when it should have started you know you could go heavy package again just play action and let Mahan just step back and step or two or throw it to the end zone throw it out of bounds and that would be the ball game but now with the play clock at 25 and they put the game clock back at 49 that's not right so who knows we're on the road we may have another two minutes to play it was 42 when they set the clock it should be two seconds you're right they gained an extra seven that's definitely not accurate this this is not good and Kenny Morris and I we was way down nobody knows and we knew and it's an official that runs the clock it's not like home cooking or anybody else it's an official that runs it the guy that was on the side here he was looking at it I don't agree with his count but they've got the 42nd back at the on the play clock so there's going to be it's 49 on the clock it's going to be nine seconds and Florence has no timeouts left so you know I take the get delay a game I think so too but this is ridiculous that they actually have it like this that clock has already been running they gained another second or two on that it's just you're on the road a nine second difference now this game should already be over folks but I like Orlando rounds he puts his arms around everybody and the cheer of I believe we will win coming from the nest it's not over yet you got to take care of the football we might not be lining up at all we shouldn't just take the five yard penalty which would run it down to about nine seconds well maybe eleven seconds the way they did unbelievable we'll get ten they finally gave us nine eight now they're going to make them put more time on the clock they may put another thirty seconds on the clock you never can tell I have been on the road before many a time I've been the voice of the Falcons for a long time fourth and ten for the Falcons at their own 40 yard line you could give it to Williams and tell him to run as far as he can out of the back of the end zone but I wouldn't want to do that either tight end check in so eight seconds to go Florence leaves at seven zero but it's fourth down and ten Kevin I really do do that I make cost delay it and then launch it because he's got to get enough on to run three or four seconds you got to protect too they're coming with a blitz they're going to leave it with Williams he's trying to skip and bounce and stays on his feet he's brought down clock will run down call a penalty on us for running out on the field for throwing the ball out in the field I don't see any flags JJ I can't believe it they got one second left they're getting the ball so Muscle shows we'll have one second to go anything could happen in a second guys I have seen that happen in this state before let's not let it happen in this stadium penalties anything so I'm really frustrated because this game should have already been over but they're putting three on it now we've somehow gained an extra 12 seconds in this game it's probably good that the clock operator is about three doors down and I can't say anything at the 35 you just don't want to have any penalties here and I don't want to sit back and let this guy launch a pass to number one either yeah they're going to throw it in the middle and start doing the pitch and I go to go and and the Falcons win it by a score of 7-0 mild celebration for the Falcons they win [3:39:04] Moore Stadium kudos to both teams for a great game and kudos to both teams for great sportsmanship at the end of a hard-fought game especially to muscle shows especially to Florence very much a well-played game and kudos to the way they both handled themselves after the game wild celebration across the way for the Falcons absolutely celebrating what they haven't done against muscle shows in ten years they win it tonight 7-0 Mike what a game incredible game you know the Falcons really hard-fought battle back and forth I mean it was a it was a bent but don't break situation for both teams and you know to come away with this victory you know this is ten years or ten games coming you know and it's been a tough tough road for the Falcons have it Jeffrey Jones you have the head coach with you coach I know you said in your previous interviews now you're a little overwhelmed tell us a little bit about it just so proud for these young men this community you know they've waited ten years for this to happen and you know this is our fifth year it's been a tough struggle for four against Muscle Shoals since I've gotten here and we're just glad to get this one under our belt you know hey 3-0 region 1-0 we're just glad to be where we are right now we knew it was going to be a defensive battle we knew they had a great defense we know we have on defense did it kind of go how you expected it to?
I told the guys when the game started right before the game started in the locker room I said this is going to be a heavyweight bout man it's going to be a 15 round battle and somebody's going to get knocked down somebody's going to have to get back up and fight it lived up to the two great football teams getting after each other hats off to Muscle Shoals boy they got a good team who knows this could be a matchup again down the road in the playoffs so we'll enjoy it for 24 hours and we've got to get ready for the next one I don't normally talk about individual players but how about Jaden White down front and Bo Burski at linebacker we called his name a lot tonight wow those guys were big and you know there's a reason that J White's got so many division one offers and that he's an SEC caliber player and Bo Burski stock's going to continue to rise what a football player he is and that whole defense you know we've been a few times and we missed some plays we played three corners in one spot and the guys just kept coming in and pulling for each other we take one out one to come in and they pull for each other that hadn't happened around here in a long time we got a real special thing going with this group I said it in the locker room today when Coach McGuire got done with the devotional we got something special and these guys are pulling for each other and they fought throughout together I'm so proud for them go celebrate with your team Coach congratulations Kenny Barson celebrating a 7-0 victory and he gets a bear hug from his offensive coordinator Coach McGuire as he wins it tonight 7-0 and the Falcons may not come down for a while on this one that was an incredible win and Mike oh man I am worn out I know they're worn out they played hard muscle shows played hard but when you had to have it it was the rookie the sophomore Kayon Williams all he needed all he needed all he needed was a step and when he found daylight it was to the house you know underneath these Friday night lights you know you have these moments where you see a young man really just burst onto the scene and we've seen him for a couple weeks but I think he just made his name known you know Williams had just really a phenomenal individual effort on that play there but you know it comes down to the whole team the whole team worked hard both both teams hard like one of the hardest fought high school football games I ever remember and you know just coming down to that one big play was so huge and I'm just really happy for this Falcon organization so Florence wins at 7-0 let's make sure those guys don't take the flag down there to midfield I don't like that that's not good I hope they will stop that right now they don't need to do that yep and that's a good job by the coaches no no no no no we've seen that in colleges take that flag back I mean that doesn't go well you know look I know that we're really high on the hog right now because we won this game but remember the previous 10 matchups that's right and like they have your number relax you know you've earned this one earn it but let's not make a scene here and remember you may see them again as Coach Kenny Morrison said they are a very good team so good coaching there by the Falcons after the game said no guys celebrate but celebrate the right way getting some pictures made because it was a big win you see that a lot in high schools now Florence wins at 7-0 in an absolutely slugfest here at James F. Moore Stadium where there was no scoring in the first quarter no scoring in the second quarter no scoring in the third quarter but in the fourth quarter the Falcon defense who had come up time after time after time got a stop gave the Falcons the ball back at the 36 yard line and it was then that Mr. Williams broke free took it to the house and Florence wins at 7-0 in one that people will talk about for a long time and the Falcons win it a big win most of all for this season but it also sort of stops that slide that's been going on for the past 10 years and that is good our stats brought to us by our good friends at Chick-fil-A John take it away my friend thank you KJ let's start with the home Trojans tonight for the game 221 total yards of offense they had 30 rushes for 96 yards 14 completions on 27 attempts for 125 yards 12 first downs tonight 5 for 14 on third down conversions 0 for 2 on fourth down conversions 8 penalties for 45 yards tonight 2 turnovers of course no PATs time of possession 23 minutes even Falcons tonight 184 yards of offense 36 carries for 155 yards rushing we were 4 for 14 passing for 29 yards 10 first downs tonight 1 for 12 on third down conversion and 1 for 4 on fourth down conversions we had 9 penalties for 55 yards big key no turnovers tonight 1 for 1 on our PATs and our time of possession in even 25 minutes wow and as I said the touchdown was electric young number 10 needed one step and when he found the gap he was off to the races and it wasn't over yet Mike that defense had to come through in the end and just play after play all night long then but not breaking when you felt like you got the lead this defense was like are you kidding me we're not going down now right look both teams that was a heavyweight battle Coach Morrison said it the best and you know when you have that one big big play that home run play right there you know it was one of those things that defense looked like they got a burst of energy they had all the cushion that they needed and they pinned their ears back and they did what they could it showed on the field this team is special yeah I mean it is and you know you're going to see more good teams matter of fact let's be honest about it next week it is a trap game waiting because it's the undefeated Russell Golden Tigers who are 3-0 in the season after tonight's win over Hartwell they were winning at least late they will be at home against Florence and that one will be talked about and don't think that one hasn't been circled on the calendar by the Trojans and their coaching staff for a while yeah that staff has had that one circled for a while so it's a tough game to come back down and realize you better have your A game next week as well and you know we could talk about play after play that was big plays but maybe the biggest play of the night to me still was Kayon Williams going back to get a missed snap that went over the head of his quarterback he got it nine yards deep and the Trojans were coming after him and he fought and fought and fought to get out and he just got out maybe a half yard Jeffrey Jones you were right there in front of him I mean he barely got the football outside of the end zone to save a safety and it ended up making a difference and he took a hit too he took a massive hit by two Trojans just eyeing that safety but he had good awareness and got out and I walked down there and you know it was a terrible disastrous play I walked down there and I said that just saved us two points and the line just said yep sure did it was going to come back and get us well it could have been because it had been a safety and then the muscles had the ball and momentum it was just a game change play and Mike you know we talked about Bo Berski we talked about Jaden White we talked about but the whole team as a whole give them credit because hey it wasn't easy for any side all night long and the Falcons didn't flinch they didn't blink no they did not they really worked hard as a unit the entire game even when there was adversity you saw guys picking up their teammates and really doing what it took to come away with a victory that sort of teamwork that sort of can do attitude that these guys have shown is really a testament to how well the senior leadership on this team is really special you already talked about Berski you got to iron you could go down the list I'm going to miss about six other guys in the mix that's the danger of trying to name everybody but the reality is that we have a core group of guys that's really special and that sort of leadership is huge let's take a time out we come back on the TNT Fireworks post game show we'll wrap it up Falcons win at 7-0 over Muscle Shoals we're back in one minute hey where Florence just knocked off Muscle Shoals 7-0 huge win for the Falcons to go 3-0 in the season and 1-0 in region play Kevin Johnson and the crew glad to be with you and the Falcon fans happy as they go home Muscle Shoals fans it's something they haven't done in a while going home in a home game where they lose one in the regular season but both teams I think found out a whole lot about themselves tonight these two teams can play with anybody and you're going to hear them down the stretch that is for sure Mike Oh absolutely you know both squads really laid it out there tonight you could see from the very first snap that these players were ready to play you know and they gave 100% effort you know hats off to everybody involved in that game that was a special game and just appreciate you know being able to be a part of it you know it was an excellent high school football game let's get our final thoughts from Jeffrey Jones my final thoughts are we got a monkey offer back tonight I'm very proud of the school proud of the student section man I haven't heard the student section that loud in a long time I don't think I've ever heard them that loud in an away game we showed up showed out got 24 hours to enjoy this one and then we're on to the next one so you know just very proud of the effort they could have gotten down a lot you know Muscle Shoals is a well coached team I do have a feeling that we are going to see them again more than very possible that we could see them again you know out of our three wins this year it's very possible we could see all three of the teams again that we've played well I think I think you're right I think there's a chance to see the Trojans we don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves but there's some really good teams in 5A that we're going to have to see it's not going to be easy I guarantee that but I guarantee you're right this is one thing you might see John McDaniel your final thoughts yeah you know this was a terrific win it's great to finally beat your rival it's been a long time my first and this is my 10th year and it's the first time that we have beat Muscle Shoals on the field so it's exciting for the players to see and the kind of the unity that comes with that for the players there's a connectedness that you know hey we've got something going let's keep it going let's keep locking in every week but the Falcons are in their third they have played three games this hopefully is not a finished product they need to keep improving there's a lot of things that we saw they can improve on they've got a great start and I think Kevin they may get some votes this week since you've been mentioning that they may get some votes in the 5A poll I don't know just guessing but this is something for them to build on not for something this is not the destination for sure the Golden Tigers next week are going to be ready it's something you don't normally see with their offense so it's going to be a little unusual for them to try to find how to keep find the ball and you mentioned it their coaching staff is going to be ready ready they've had this one circled I guarantee and it's going to be a lot a lot better it's going to be the best Russell team that's played in a while I agree with that I totally agree with that as far as the rankings I won't say anything except I think both teams should be having some votes this week I think both these teams deserve it they're two of the top ten teams in my mind Mike Albertson your final thought I think when it comes to these two communities coming together and really showing out for their own side their own community and everything it's a beautiful thing I enjoy this game each and every year just from that standpoint of both Florence and Muscle Shoals come out and they really support each other and it's great to see that community coming together like that and so hats off to both squads and both fan bases it was just a really nice night for high school football being able to celebrate our communities and moving forward when it comes to Falcon football and all that stuff the game we've talked about ad nauseum this team can be special it's up to them where they go from here they've got to turn the page and Russell will yes Russell will is next well I think my final thought is this Falcon team has shown in the first two weeks they could be explosive but then tonight they showed they could be gritty they showed some heart they showed some resolve about them and I love that because you're going to have to have that in games in your season you're going to have that in the playoffs if you make the playoffs and tonight to get that win it was not about really execution it was not about outflanking or outathleting even necessarily it really came down to just making some plays and some heart plays man I saw a lot of heart in this Falcons team tonight I mean a lot of heart defense offense really impressed about how the Falcons responded and you win games like this in the fourth quarter and in the fourth quarter I think a little bit of the strength in the conditioning and all that showed out maybe in the fourth quarter a little bit on both sides and Florence wins it 7-0 but as we all said this one means nothing if you don't go next week and take care of business on the road to Russell and it's going to be difficult we'll have that game for you right here on 93.9 the score what a game it'll be next week as well and what a game it was tonight final score tonight from James F. Moore Stadium Florence wins it 7-0 for our station manager Greg Thornton for our studio engineers and hosts James Moody and Blair Krieger for Mike Albertson Jeffrey Jones and John McDaniel I'm Kevin Johnson saying go Falcons have a great night and as always folks I'll see you in church on Sunday goodnight everyone you've been listening to Florence Falcons football on sports radio 93.9 the score Florence Falcons football on sports radio 93.9 the score has been brought to you by Florence Utilities Florence City School the law firm of Johnson Pesher Medley and Virtual the North Alabama Boney Joint Clinic TNT Fireworks Yogurt Mountain Whataburger Singing River Dentistry Village Discount Drugs Hugo's Mexican Restaurant Iron's Electric Cypress Creek Indoor Range the show Lost Pizza Henniker Johnson and Layton Insurance Carbine Construction 1st Southern Bank and Warehouse Tackle Thanks for listening and go Falcons to be continued…
