With Texas sending Alabama’s baseball team packing in the College World Series, the true depth of the offseason is now upon us.
The main thing out there right now is keeping an eye on the recruiting class for 2027 as Alabama enters into their usually strong month of June and into July. After losing LB Kenneth Simon to Tennessee this weekend, the Tide is definitely going to be looking to add some good news.
Alabama continues to build momentum on the recruiting trail, and the Crimson Tide may have identified another potential difference-maker in the 2027 class.
After recently extending an offer to Georgia EDGE Tyler Younger, Kalen DeBoer and his coaching staff have quickly positioned themselves as one of the favorites for the talented defender. What began as early interest during the spring evaluation period has rapidly developed into one of Alabama’s most intriguing recruiting battles, with signs pointing toward the Crimson Tide making a serious run at a commitment.
A 3-star from Norcross, GA, Younger is an interesting player that was a wide receiver who grew into playing middle linebacker, and now is being projected as an edge rusher. He’s an impressive athlete who’s still more of a position unknown and a project than a proven performer, but is someone who could be one of those cheaper additions with a really high upside.
Another big one is WR Osani Gayles:
The IMG Academy product is a borderline 5-star player that is announcing in two weeks, and most seem to think Alabama is the strong favorite to land him.
Alabama is also in the mix for the top WR in the country, Monshun Sales, an Alabama native who moved to Indiana. To this point, Alabama, Indiana, and Ohio State have been the main three guesses, with none of the recruiting services willing to put their name on any predilections yet. LSU and the fighting Kiffins are also making a push. If the Tide could land both Sales and Gayles, it would be the most hyped WR duo in the country right out of the gate.
Alabama just finished up their final high school camp yesterday, so hopefully we’ll start seeing a lot more movement soon.
In the broader college football world, Texas Tech managed to find door #3:
The Brendan Sorsby saga is over.
Texas Tech announced Monday night the quarterback will not play college football this fall, despite a Lubbock County judge’s injunction that granted him eligibility.
That decision caused a firestorm as other schools threatened boycotting Texas Tech, and the Big 12 filed its own lawsuit against one of its member schools and attorneys general in Kansas, Utah and Texas got involved.
Sorsby, who admitted to gambling on his own team while at Indiana in 2022 and to making thousands of more bets, will enter the NFL supplemental draft, which hasn’t taken place since 2019.
Man, I can’t believe it’s been that long since we had a supplemental draft pick. In 2019, it was safety Jalen Thompson. And before that we had back to back years with Terrelle Pryor in 2011 and Josh Gordon in 2012.
Going in the way back machine, Alabama’s own Bobby Humphrey was selected in 1989 with a 1st round bid.
I think Sorsby will likely get selected, but I don’t think too many teams will bid too high. I think a 5th round pick will probably be the winner.
And with that, the Red Raiders now get off the hook for getting shunned from college football, and likely off the hook for having to drop a quarter of their NIL on Sorsby. And Cody Campbell gets to keep acting like a white knight.
If we’re looking for offseason motivation, hopefully this one reaches Ryan Coleman-Williams.
3. Cam Coleman, Texas
Coleman was a five-star receiver in the same class as Smith. Obviously, it’s easy to get overlooked in that scenario. But Coleman spent the first two years of his college career at Auburn, a period when the Tigers struggled to find competent quarterback play. Still, last season, Coleman had 56 receptions for 708 yards and five touchdowns. Now he’s at Texas with Arch Manning, an improved offensive line, and fellow receiver Ryan Wingo. It’s scary to think what he may do for the Longhorns this year. We may find out he’s the closest thing to Smith in college football, if we don’t already know it.
The freshman phenom wideout from 2024 had a down year plagued with drops in 2025, and it’s led to him dropping waaaayyy down in the national regards. Not only did he not make the top ten list, On3 listed 12 more wide receivers as “honorable mentions”, and Coleman Williams wasn’t one of them.
I do think that listing Cam Coleman as #3 in the nation is a bit annoying though, as he’s had similar statistical seasons to Ryan in his first two years… Just not as good. He also had a game-losing fumble, if you may recall.
Ah well, just means Ryan will have to get out there and win his spot back with Alabama’s revamped offense. Roll Tide!
