Jocelyn Briski (22-3) was back to her dominating self with a one hit shutout over 7.0 innings. She struck out seven with one walk and threw only 72 pitches in the win. Belmont’s Maya Johnson (28-3) suffered only her third loss of the season when she had a big ol’ struggle in the 1st inning. Johnson plunked Jena Young with the fifth pitch of the game. After Brooke Wells struck out, Alexis Pupillo singled and stole second. Ana Roman walked to load the bases for Marlie Giles who stroked a two RBI single to right field.
With Young on third base, Audrey Vandagriff grounded out to first base that scored a third run.
It was fortunate that the Tide got those three runs because they did not do much of anything for the rest of the game offensively.
UP NEXT
Upstart Upstate wins two. The Spartans again face the Crimson Tide. With a win Sunday, Bama moves on to the Supers. A loss means the two teams play a second game withe the winner advancing.

Game 4: USC Upstate 5, Southeastern Louisiana 4 (SELA eliminated) – The Spartans led 5-0 entering the 7th. They allowed four runs but held on for the win.
Game 5: USC Upstate 10, Belmont 1 (Belmont eliminated) – Ellie Giles started and was clobbered. Burnt-out Maya Johnson relieved Giles to get the final out of the 4th, but could not get out of the 5th, allowing 3 hits and 2 earned runs. Another pitcher finished but also got shelled.
Sun, May 17
Game 6: noon/1 pm | Alabama vs. USC Upstate – After getting knocked around by Bama on Friday, Maddie Drerup pitched 9.0 innings in two games on Saturday. It may be a tall order to have her go again.

BATON ROUGE
Not to look past Upstate but in the Red Stick Regional, LSU faces Virginia Tech Sunday at 1pm/2pm. The Bayou Tigers advance with a win. The Hokies will need to win twice.
