After racking up four straight wins over the past two weeks, the Alabama Crimson Tide is back in the top 25 and starting to roll – right at the perfect time. Nate Oats may not have Charles Bediako available anymore, but the rest of the team is starting to get healthier – of the players that make up the regular rotation, only Taylor Bol Bowen is currently out of the lineup. Sure, some others may be dealing with some nagging issues, but that is a big step up from where the Tide has been living on the injury report for most of the season. It’s all coming together folks!

That being said, the defense could still use some work; the Tide can’t rely on teams to miss open shots all game like Auburn and Ole Miss did. Or be as soft on the interior as South Carolina. The schedule lightening up is a large part of the reason why Alabama has catapulted up to a tie for third place in the SEC over the course of the past couple of weeks. That changes tonight – or at least puts the favorable part of the schedule on hold for an evening – as John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks (that still feels really weird to type) come to Tuscaloosa for a ranked showdown between two of the SEC’s best teams. The regular season conference title feels like a lock for Florida at this point, but there’s a lot on the line from a seeding perspective in this one – both for the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.

As hot as Alabama has been recently, Arkansas has been even better. Bart Torvik has the Hogs ranked 4th in the month of February, as the Razorbacks decimated Mississippi State, LSU, and Auburn over the last few weeks – the former two both on the road. Coach Cal has significantly increased the overall talent on the roster in Fayetteville, which includes true freshman point guard, Darius Acuff, who is a contender for SEC POY and will be a top ten pick in a loaded 2026 NBA Draft class. Acuff is averaging 21.2 PPG on an incredible 50.3%/43.2%/78.2% split with an SEC-leading 6.2 APG (32.5% AST%). His Usage Rate and Offensive Rating are among the highest in the country. Expect there to be a lot of NBA scouts watching his matchup with fellow SEC POY contender and potential top ten Draft pick, Labaron Philon, tonight.

The Hogs as a whole follow a similar build to a lot of SEC teams this season – they play fast (25th in Tempo) and score at a high rate (17th in eFG%; 5th in Offensive Efficiency), but are weak in the post, and thus, their rebounding and defense (42nd in Defensive Efficiency) lack in comparison. Nick Pringle – former Tide Hoops Final Four big man – might be their most effective true post player. Which, as much as I love Nick, there is a reason he was allowed to leave after that run. Still, he’ll be wanting to show out tonight.

Three Keys to Victory

  • Accept the Tempo Challenge and Attack. As I mentioned, Arkansas likes to run nearly as much as Alabama does – and certainly more than a John Calipari-coached team typically does. If history is any indicator, that would be a bold strategy to deploy against the Tide. Since Nate Oats took over, the number of teams that successfully come out victorious in a track meet with Alabama is few and far between. Further, Arkansas has not been good at keeping folks out of the lane – particularly in transition. The Hogs are 198th in 2P% allowed and among the worst in the conference in transition points allowed. If the Razorbacks want to make this a sprint, Alabama should gladly accept the challenge. Especially since Arkansas only goes 8-deep in their regular rotation.
  • Win the Rebounding Battle. Like many SEC teams, Arkansas isn’t great on the glass. Alabama isn’t either, but this is a matchup where the Tide can find success. The Hogs are 238th in the country in OREB% allowed and only 129th in OREB%, and again, Nick Pringle is one of their best on the boards. Neither one of these teams turns the ball over often – as hard as that is to believe about the Tide sometimes – nor does either force many turnovers, so the rebounding margin could loom large tonight, as it will likely dictate which team ends up with more possessions and shots.
  • Keep it Hot from Three. This is the area of the game where it feels like things are really starting to click for Alabama. During this four-game win streak, Alabama has shot 59/150 from beyond the arc. That’s 39.3% on 37.5 attempts per game. It’s really hard to lose games shooting threes at that rate and percentage. On the flipside, Arkansas has actually been even more efficient from three than Alabama this season, ranking 34th in the country at 37.1% for the year. The big difference is that the Razorbacks don’t take many perimeter shots, ranking 268th in 3PA/FGA. However, with how often the Tide leaves open shooters, the Hogs could utilize the arc more than usual tonight.

There’s a lot on the line for both of these teams tonight, as they currently sit 2nd and 3rd in the SEC and are both sitting on the consensus 4/5 line for the NCAA Tournament. For my money, I’d take these two teams against anyone in the SEC outside of Gainesville, with Tennessee and Vandy being right there with them. So, this will be a major game for both programs. A Tide win will keep the win streak going with the next two games being ones where Alabama will be heavily favored. Can Alabama keep it rolling?
