[0:00] Now, get ready to roll, Shoals, Decatur, Athens and all of Northwest Alabama and Southern Tennessee. It's time for the Valley's exclusive FM Sports Voice. The Boomo Bugg Show. Your exclusive inside track to the Tigers, Tennessee and the rest of the SEC. Now, your host, Harold Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Hey, welcome into the Boomo Bugg Show for Thursday, November the 20th. Brett Beaird here for Harold Bugg. In fact, the Boomo Bugg is sitting in the dentist's chair as we speak. Hopefully he will be able to join us a little bit later in the show.

Alabama and Auburn have impressive basketball wins last night as Alabama beat Illinois 90-86 in the thrilling game. Auburn route to Jackson State, 112-66. Caleb Suggs of the Decatur Daily and JimmyLay of AL.com will preview the quarterfinals of the high school football playoffs a little bit later. But right now, Bill Bender, our good friend from the Sporting News, the National College Football Writer, will preview his predictions and picks for the big game Saturday and tell us how to fix the CFP Selection Committee. B.B., welcome into the show today, my friend.

How are you? Yeah, I'm doing well, Brad. Thanks for having me on. Always, my friend. Bill, I know we have some of this angst when the final Selection Committee poll is announced in December after the championship games. I have never seen the meltdown on social media that we have seen and heard in the last couple of days from the not just Alabama fans who are ranked number 10 behind Notre Dame. But Miami-Notre Dame debate's been going on for a while. The Oregon-Penn State, in Penn State with four and six, that's still a viable win.

You've heard a lot of this yourself. Your thoughts on what the committee did Tuesday night and what's the best solution to this? Well, I don't have too many problems with the committee's rankings. I think the top seven was solid, and then 8-9-10 is very subjective. I mean, you can put Alabama ahead of Oklahoma and Notre Dame. You could put Notre Dame. I'm fine with Notre Dame ahead of Miami. I know that sounds hypocritical, but I'm just looking at where they are now. And, you know, they're two lost teams.

The head-to-head can be a separator, but I think Notre Dame's played better than Miami. And, you know, Oklahoma did beat Alabama. So, it works both ways. It gets confusing. I think the committee does as best they can. Well, it's been an interesting week here, as you can imagine. Before we get into your 100% accuracy as far as the picks for Saturday, the coaching carousel continues to roll on. And I think we're going to have more closure, James Franklin, with his big festive press conference earlier this week at Virginia Tech.

A lot of people wanting to know what Lane Kiffin's going to do. Is he going to stay at Ole Miss, go to Florida, or possibly LSU? Jon Sumrall seems to be the leader in the clubhouse for Auburn. But, again, once Lane Kiffin makes a decision, you're going to have a domino effect. Your thoughts, where are we right now going into the last, second-to-last game in the regular season? Well, I mean, there'll be more, you know, craziness, I guess. Some of those openings will be filled on rivalry week, as you know.

It's always a pretty crazy week for us. It's 40 news, there's no doubt. I think the way I kind of see it is, you know, Lane will unlock everything else. If he ends up going to Florida or LSU, then some dominoes will start to fall. And here's something I was saying all day yesterday, Brett. If he goes to Florida or LSU before the playoff, fans need to know that coaching Ole Miss in the playoff if that happens. There's no chance. I don't think so. I mean, other people might think he finishes the season.

I don't think he would. That's been the issue. I know you wrote about that earlier this week about if he does announce something. And Ole Miss, I know publicly they're not saying anything, but even they would like to have some kind of a decision because if he does go to either LSU or Florida, they would like to begin to ramp up a coaching search. But I kind of feel the same way you do. If he announces after the Yagbo, well, I've decided to go to Florida, then that's going to be an interesting decision with the Ole Miss administration whether to let him go or stay through the playoffs.

[5:31] I don't think they would. I just ask, are you going to have a coach who's going to coach at Florida the following season? If you're an acting coach during signing day, which is in December, it would create another bizarre Lane Kiffin exit, and he's no stranger to those. So I think that's something to keep in mind as we get into these next couple of weeks and whether or not he does make a decision for the Yagbo. One thing's for certain, Lane's definitely taking us all for a ride.

He probably enjoys it. Oh, yeah. And there's always been a chance it's just performative. Like, does it just mess with us and stays at Ole Miss for the next decade? Who knows? Well, it's going to be interesting. We've had it confirmed from two or three sources. Florida's got a $13.5 million offer for six years, $81 million guaranteed. But he seems to have matured some, seems to be happy with his family in Oxford, and it's certainly going to be an interesting two weeks or so before he makes a decision.

Let's look at some of the games that you predicted. A big one for the SEC, number 23, Missouri, at number eight, Oklahoma, the Sooners. This is an early game on ABC, a nine-and-a-half-point favorite. Missouri finally turned around and handed the ball to Ahmaud Hardy last week, ran for 300 yards. Oklahoma coming off that emotional win over Alabama on the road. Of course, they're at home. You've got Oklahoma winning 28-17. Yeah, and now it sounds like Bill Credulon may try to give it a go for Missouri. Would you alter that pick a little bit?

I mean, Ahmaud Hardy obviously coming off a huge game. How will he fare against that road or that rugged Oklahoma run defense? It didn't allow Alabama much on the ground last week. I think that's one of the big keys to this game. I do like Oklahoma. I think if they were going to slip up, I think there's a better chance LSU beats them for some reason than this one. I like the Sooners. I think they'd pull away in the second half. John McTeer gets them a win, and they get one step closer to the college football playoff.

One of the more intriguing games to me in the SEC Saturday is Kentucky at Vanderbilt. Vanished still on the cusp of maybe getting into the playoffs. The Commodores at home are a 10-point favorite. This is a 2-30 game on ESPN. Mark Stoops and Kentucky have figured something out because they've won three consecutive games, beat an undefeated FCS team last week, 42-10. Cutter Boley has made a big difference in Kentucky, but I know Vandy at home would like to stay in the CFP race. You have got Vanderbilt winning a close game, 28-23, but not covering that 10-point spread.

No, I think Kentucky's played better through this winning streak and obviously a little bit of defense there. Challenge for Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt's that one team outside the five that we have in the playoffs right now. They're that next SEC team that if they took care of their business and they got a little help, they could actually slip in the field, and that's something to keep an eye on. But you can't do that if you don't take care of business against Kentucky and Tennessee over the next two weeks.

Absolutely. Speaking of Tennessee, they are traveling to the swamp, which has not been very kind to them for 22 years. It still amazes me. Tennessee has beaten Florida in Gainesville since 2003. The Vols have not had the year that they wanted. Of course, losing, but losing to Georgia and Alabama certainly is not disrespectful. Florida will play well. They played well last week against Ole Miss. They played well against Georgia. If Laguay can play, you've got Tennessee winning 28-19 and covering a three-and-a-half-point spread. It won't be easy. Obviously, if you haven't won somewhere in 22 years.

I mean, Brett, that streak surprised me, too. I know. I mean, every time you look at it. But then you think of some of the circumstances that they've lost some of those games at the swamp, and that's how streaks like that happen. But I think, you know, in some ways, who's got more to play for this week? You know, and Tennessee still, again, they're another team that's on the fringe, and it'd be really hard. But they could, theoretically, still get the mix there in the playoff.

And, I mean, you know, if you get to nine and three, that's a pretty good season. Tennessee's got a chance to do that. They've got to take advantage. Maybe the biggest national game is USC, ranked 17, at Oregon, number six. The Ducks, a 10-point favorite, 330 on CBS. USC's averaging over 500 yards. Malvia's a very good quarterback. He's got two very good receivers. Again, this is at Oregon. It's a tough place to win, and USC trying to get in. If they could beat Oregon, it would certainly help their hopes to get in to the CFP, too.

[11:00] You've got Oregon winning 35-24. Yeah, and for both teams, it's the biggest game in the Big Ten this week. Yeah. Because if USC finds a way to win, you have a chance to get four playoff teams in. If not, you know, Oregon will be that third team and solidified there. It's an old Pac-12 matchup. Both teams run. As much as the quarterbacks get the attention, both teams run the football effectively. So, can USC take that road game win on the road? They've struggled on the road in Illinois and Notre Dame this year.

And for Oregon, it's kind of a mulligan after they lost to Indiana. They've got game day back there, all that. I think they take care of business. Yeah. BYU, number 11, two-and-a-half-point favorite, traveling to Cincinnati. This is a 7 p.m. game on Fox. Cincinnati is a little bit beat up now. BYU wants to stay in the COP conversation. Bear Brockermeyer, who is the freshman quarterback, has had a marvelous season. You've got BYU winning a tight game, 28-24, and covering a two-and-a-half-point spread. Yeah. You know, Nippert, tough place to play.

Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati. You know, I think they're banged up a little bit. I was really impressed with BYU's bounce-back last week against TCU. You mentioned Bachmeier, LJ Martin, that physical running game, physical defense. And I think they are on track to go ahead and get to the Big 12 championship game. All they've got to do is take care of business the next two weeks. And that was an impressive win against TCU. So, I like the Cougars in this one. BYU-Texas Tech, they've still got two in the hunt that can get to the playoff.

But keep an eye on Utah, too, if they can backdoor in that game somehow. Yeah, absolutely. Pitt and Georgia Tech is another good one. Georgia Tech ranked 15th. That's going to be an interesting game for those two teams. Great stuff, as always. What have you got on tail for the rest of the week? I know you've got a lot of pre-game coverage, post-game coverage. Got it all covered as far as college football. You've got your pro picks, too. Well, what else have you got on the agenda this week?

And where can we get online to get all the great stuff? Yeah. Well, we've got a lot coming. I just sent the rivalry week budget. We've got a lot coming next week, obviously, with everything going on there. We'll get after it at Sporting News. We always do. Yeah, you can check it out at SportingNews.com. Bill Bender, 92. I know we'll work out a time on Thanksgiving week there. Right. Make time to talk to you maybe next Friday. But I'll connect with you on that, Brad. It's always a good time.

Absolutely. Listen, have a great Thanksgiving with you and your family, Bill. And, as always, we appreciate your time, buddy. I'll talk to you next week. Hopefully, he's going to be able to join us very soon, if not at the top of the second hour. Always great to bring in Caleb Suggs, the prep sports writer for the Decatur Daily.

We have thoroughly enjoyed previewing the games, talking about stats, players, coaches throughout the fall. And it was not a good second round for a lot of the Morgan County Decatur Daily teams. But I wanted to go back and recap some of the teams and the year they've had. Caleb, welcome to the show today, bud. How are you doing? I'm doing good, Brad. How are you? Good, Caleb. One of the biggest surprises last week, and I'm sure it surprised you too, was West Morgan going down to Good Hope.

[21:31] I thought, my goodness, Cherokee County is finally out after three years. Is this the year that they're going to run? But turnovers, and you can ask Kaelin DeBoer about this. You turn the ball over three or four times, struggle on offense, you're probably going to lose, as West Morgan and the Rebels did, 31-7 to Good Hope. But they had a marvelous year. I believe a 35-game regular season winning streak. We've talked about Macari Johnson, Titan Partlow, Noah Thomas, and you go on and on and on.

Your thoughts on the loss to Good Hope in the kind of year West Morgan and Drew Phillips had. Yeah, you know, I think you look at it, you look at the last three years, and West Morgan, they just didn't have those let-down games. I mean, the only team they've lost to the last three years before this season was Cherokee County, which is obviously the team that's represented the North and the state finals the last three years. So that's a team they were kind of chasing. But everybody else, they always seem to play their best and be able to outplay everybody else.

And they just have those let-down games. And it finally caught up to them. I mean, eventually you're going to have one of those, and it just so happened to be Friday gets Good Hope. I don't want to take anything away from Good Hope. I think they're a really good team. Obviously, they played really well. But just from people, everybody I talked to that was there, they said West Morgan played, you know, about as bad as they could play. And you hate to see that in the playoffs, but that's just part of high school football.

That's the reason you play the games. You don't decide anything on paper. And I know it stinks for them. They thought that this was their year. But, you know, they'll be back next year. Drew Phillips has done a fantastic job with that program. And, you know, they'll be back next year contending for another spot. You know, like you said, they still have that 35-game regular season win streak. So, you know, they'll be doing success next year. And then at the same time, Good Hope is in the quarterfinals.

They're making a great run there. So, maybe they can be that team that gets there. But, you know, I said it last week. I thought West Morgan was the best team. The 4A North is pretty solid across the board. There's a lot of good teams. You can make an argument to be that team. And, you know, we'll see how it shakes out. Harnsall is another that we've talked about all year. Burt Newton, Carter Lee, 17-25. In the loss to Homewood, 31-24. We've talked about Jake Miles.

A lot of these guys throughout the season. And this was a special game for Burt Newton going back to Homewood. They played well. But, again, Homewood just made a couple more plays and win. And they win at the end, 31-24. Your thoughts on a special year again for Harnsall? Yeah. Yeah, again, just another great season. I think it's going to stay for a while. Because I think this is a game that they thought they had a really good chance to win. And I thought they, you know, really could have won.

I think a couple plays, you know, they kind of did go their way. And they kind of let us slip away. You know, and that's tough. You know, you look at a Homewood good team. But I thought Harnsall was just as good and not better. I think the only difference was that Homewood quarterback was just the X factor. He was magnificent, scrambling, using his legs. Whether it be for, you know, rushing for extra yardage to pick up first down. They're just scrambling to buy time to find players downfield.

Harnsall seemed to have everything covered up except that. They just couldn't get him on the ground. And, you know, especially when you haven't played a guy like that all year. And I assure you they haven't played anybody like that all year. It's just hard to game plan for that. And that was, you know, he was their offense. He did everything for them. And he's an amazing player. And he's going to get Homewood a chance to get to any team. But, yeah, I think, you know, at the end they'll always look back.

And it'll be a great season for a team that had 28 seniors. But for a while I think it's going to sting because I think they thought that they had a chance to win that game. And I think they thought, you know, coming back home, they would have been at home this week against Clay Choppel. I think they thought they had a chance there. So it's going to be tough. But, like you said, at the end of the day it'll be a good season to look back on.

No question about it. Caleb Suggs, who does a very good job covering prep sports for the Decatur Daily. We've talked a lot about Priceful. We had Coach Seth Parker on the show last week. They played a very good Moody team. And Moody returns the opening kickoff for a touchdown. And it kind of goes downhill from there for Priceful. They had a 39-7 deficit. But we've talked about the renaissance of this Priceful team. 2-8 in Seth Parker's first year. And they finished 8-4. Had a marvelous year.

Had a tremendous win in the first round of the playoffs. I know 13 seniors went a long way. Your thoughts, again, congratulations to Moody. They're going to be a tough out in the playoffs. But what a season for Seth Parker, his team, to finish 8-4. Yeah, I think, you know, it was always going to be a stretch trying to beat Moody. I think that Priceful's just not at that level yet in 5-8. Moody, like you said, that's a buzz ball. So, you know, you look at the season.

[26:52] It was a tremendous turnaround to go from 2-8 to, you know, 8-4, I think, is what they finished. You know, and so you look at it. You know, 5-8 is just a little bit of a different animal. I think, you know, when you start moving up into 5-8, 6-8, 7-8, it's a significant jump into each classification. And I think Chris Foster, who was there before Parker, had done a good job building Priceful into a great 4-8 program. But I don't think they were ready for that move to 5-8.

So, for Parker to make that turnaround and build that program in two years is pretty tremendous. And I think he's a great coach. And now to the question, if you're Priceful, I think your worst nightmare just happened. Bob Jones' job opened, you know. Exactly. Coach Parker grew up there, played there, coached there. So, obviously, common sense would tell you that he's going to be a hot name for that. And that's not based on any intel or anything. That's just, like, you know, my thought on the matter.

If I was Bob Jones, that's who I would chase. So, that's going to be interesting to keep up with it. But if he's there, I think, obviously, there's a bright future. But I think there's a bright future regardless. I think Priceful is becoming a program that people, you know, people want to be there. And, you know, there's been a lot of growth over the years. So, I think there's a bright future regardless of whoever the coach is. But if Coach Parker's there, Coach Parker's the head of the coach.

And I'm sure you know they'll continue to get better. That was literally my next question. Again, Kevus White stepped down, retired at Bob Jones this week. And Seth Parker was the wide receiver coach and then the offensive coordinator at Bob Jones for three years. And let me say the same thing you did. We're not saying he's getting the job. But there's no question, if he's interested, that he would be a big candidate on the short list for the Bob Jones administration to certainly talk with. Let me ask you about Musa Shoals.

You saw them against Hartzell. I saw them last week against Parker. They got behind 14-7, made some adjustments at halftime, and ended up winning that game 17-14. They move on to play Mountain Brook tomorrow night. Musa Shoals still undefeated. Mountain Brook 9-3. They've got a very good team, too. But Musa Shoals, stingish defense in Class 6A, allowing only 7.6 points a game. Cade Clemens, Sean Tapscott, transfer from Madison Academy. They intercepted three passes last week. You've seen it before. Does Musa Shoals beat Mountain Brook in advance to the semifinals?

Yeah, I think so. I don't want to say 100%, but I'm about as close there as I can get. Just because, I mean, for one, Mountain Brook, obviously a good team, always well coached. Coach Yeager does a great job. But I think this year Mountain Brook is not as good as they usually are. Now, don't get me wrong. That's still a good team and a tough place to go play. But, you know, when I look at Musa Shoals, obviously they're a great team. But what impresses me so much is what they're able to do after halftime.

You know, if you look at the Hartzell game, Hartzell pretty much dominated that first half. And then Musa comes out in the second half and Musa Shoals completely flipped the game. I mean, put it on its head. It was a completely different ball game. And then they do the same, you know, again last week. I'm not going to say Parker was dominating, but they were ahead at halftime, I believe. And then West Morgan comes, I mean, Musa Shoals comes in, does another shutout. I don't know, I made a second half shutout that they've had this year.

So, I mean, Musa Shoals, it's a complete team. But when you have a team that can play, obviously play good ball in the first half, and make those kind of adjustments at halftime, I mean, that's elite coaching right there. I think Musa Shoals is far and away a better team than Mountbrook. I think they will win this game. And then they're going to get, you know, either Clay or Holmwood, two really good teams. You know, either way, but either way, you're going to get it at home, I believe.

And which, you know, I've said many times that stadium is one of the toughest to go play in. So, it's setting up for Musa Shoals, too. They've been really close over the years, but it's setting up well for them to have a chance to probably get back to the state finals, you know, again, for the first time since 2013, I believe. Yeah, I think they definitely have a chance for that. Absolutely. And you're right about Scott Bation and being able to make adjustments in the second half.

Really enjoyed the coverage of high school football, basketball. The sports writers unveil their top 10 in classes 1A through 7A. Not a surprise to you, 10 of them local teams. Alston, East Limestone, West Morgan, Hatton, Decatur Heritage Tanner for the boys. Hartzell, Priceville, Decatur Heritage, Athens Bible for the girls. And East Lawrence, I had to receive some votes. Still, again, basketball really just getting started for high school, but we look forward to talking with you about that in the coming weeks. I think basketball in the Cater daily coverage area is going to be pretty good this year.

[31:54] Yeah, I think so. I think we've got some really solid teams. I'm waiting to see, you know, which of those teams I think can really break out and be top tier. I think we've got a couple that can, but I think there's a couple that – we have a couple I think will, and I think there's a few that I think can. So it's going to be interesting. You know, I'm a little sad that football is already over for me. I wasn't expecting it to be over this early, but basketball is going to be a lot of fun too.

Brett Beaird in for Harold Bugg, who's sitting in the dentist's chair right now. Hopefully, everything will go according to form and he'll be able to get back in the second hour. Always a delight to bring in Ryan Callahan, staff writer for Gold Vosch 247, who does an excellent job of covering recruiting and football. Ryan, welcome to the show today, bud. How are you doing?

Hey, doing well. How are you? Good. I would guess the worst kept secret in Knoxville was at some point Boo Carter was going to enter the transfer portal for multiple reasons. And according to media reports, he did just that this week. He did, you know, really, he's done his best to do some window dressing there and try to make that seem like not a dismissal. But I think he even acknowledged in some comments that he gave the other day that he was dismissed from the team.

And that happened on Sunday officially, you know, it was sort of an inevitable ending, it seemed like by the time it got to that point. But it's just been an unnecessarily dramatic few months with Boo Carter and that whole situation going back to the summer when he was away from the team for about two weeks without participating in summer workouts. And was not welcomed with open arms by his teammates when he returned and sort of led to some tension there and some legitimate discussion going into preseason camp of whether he should even stay on the team.

Tennessee gave him another chance and it ended up kind of going down that race, down that same road eventually anyway. Kind of saw some questionable efforts from him. There were some putt returns in recent weeks that he had not returned where he had, it looked like he had room to do something. It was just sort of calling fair catches and just maybe had sort of checked out and was not playing a big role on defense recently. So his defensive role evaporated and he, I think, finally decided he was just not wanting to play.

And so, yeah, according to sources, he showed up last week and was claiming to have an injury. He had not been receiving treatment for an injury. So that, I think, was kind of the sign to everyone that it was just time for the two parties to part ways. And so Boo Carter's time at Tennessee is done. And that's obviously unfortunate for them because that's a guy they recruited for a long time. Major prospect for them that they thought was going to be a big part of their success for a few years.

And he had some nice moments last year as a freshman, but year two did not go as well. Absolutely. It still boggles my mind that Tennessee has not beaten Florida in Gainesville in 22 years. There have been a lot of very good coaches for Florida, very good players, et cetera. There have been some close games. But that's one, as far as one of the records in college football, that still astounds me. It's pretty amazing. Now, there's a couple things about that, things that have contributed to that.

Now, one of them is, let's face it, Florida's probably had a better team than Tennessee for most of those, I would say. But there have been a few games where Tennessee legitimately had expectations of going to the Swamp and winning and just found ways to lose. And this last time they were there in 2023, that was a game they probably were good enough to win, and they ended up losing by about two touchdowns going on the road and just not playing very well. They've gone down there too many times, bottom line, and played pretty mistake-prone football a lot of times.

Turnovers have been issues, penalties. They just tend to go down there and sort of melt in the bright lights playing in the Swamp. And what's usually a big game for both teams, because it historically has been a tone-setter for the season. It's been an early-season game in September or October, and it sort of determines whether you're going to be a contender or not in the SEC. And sometimes your season will go downward a little bit if you lose that game. And so now this year it's flipped.

You're playing at the end of the season. Florida's got an interim coach and a losing record, and so it sets up better for Tennessee. But I think every Tennessee fan out there has in the back of their mind, I've seen this movie before. I'm not going to get my hopes up until I see it. So it's a pretty amazing streak. But, yeah, they've not won there in 22 years. And, you know, I just did a shooting for a TV show here locally where a few people are picking Florida to win this game because Florida's still a decent team.

[42:25] And that streak weighs heavily in a lot of people's minds because Tennessee's just not been a very good team playing in a tough environment, granted, at the Swamp. But they've not been at their best historically when they play Florida, especially on the road. Tennessee took care of business last week against New Mexico State, winning 42-9. They were able to get their sixth defensive touchdown. William Wright had a pick six. Aguilar played pretty well but threw two more interceptions. Tennessee ran for 194 on the day. And everybody knew Tennessee was going to win the game.

But they did what they had to do. Your thoughts on the win over New Mexico State? Yeah. On one hand, they did what they had to do. On the other hand, it was a pretty underwhelming performance by them overall. And you see that sometimes. You know, Alabama's had some of those games over the years against FCS teams and whoever else where you look up at the end of the game. It's 42-7 or something. And you're like, they probably should have beaten them worse than that. Well, Tennessee had one of those.

They've not had many of those under Josh Heifel. They've had a lot of games where they have just blown the doors off teams like that and put up six or seven yards of offense. And usually it's a pretty easy day for them. Last week was anything but that. They had about 400 yards of offense. Their second lowest offensive production of the season with 413 yards narrowly eclipsing the 410 that they had against Alabama last month. So they didn't do very well offensively. Joey Aguilar threw two interceptions again. He's now done that in back-to-back games.

So just a pretty off performance. And they were obviously coming off the loss to Oklahoma two weeks earlier. But they had an open date, had some regulars sitting out. So there are some things that contributed to that. But overall, just not a great performance, not a very confidence-building performance going into a couple really consequential games here for Tennessee down the stretch. Not so much for the playoff stakes, because I think Tennessee's playoff hopes are hanging by a thread at best. But more so for the big-picture view of this program and Josh Heifel's tenure and the job security he'll have going into next year and things like that.

They really need to win these last two games. So for them to play that way last week, they definitely left a bit of a bad taste in their mouth going into this week because they did not play their best game against New Mexico State. And it seemed like one of those games where they just maybe weren't that motivated, but just in general, they just didn't play very well. It seemed like they kind of – just a pretty blah effort. And they certainly need to be better than that Saturday if they're going to beat Florida on the road.

For all of the defensive issues and, more importantly, the injuries, in Tennessee, Held, Arian Carter, Joseph, Jordan Ross, and a few others out. Hobbs had nine tackles, two pass breakups. And Colton Hood has been one of the pleasant surprises of the year, a career seven tackles. Again, when you lose to two corners, they're probably not going to play the entire year. We'll see how the season ends. And we've talked about the Tennessee issues for quite a while. Hobbs and Hood, when both healthy, have played pretty well.

They played really well. David Hobbs was all over the place Saturday, played his – probably his best game of the year, I thought. But he's had some really good moments in a pretty short time because he missed about a month to start the season. And since he returned, he has been really, really good as a junior, a guy coming off the bench. But that's effectively kind of a third starter for them at defensive tackle. And then, yeah, Colton Hood, he's been a revelation at cornerback all season, just really from the start of the year.

Had a fumble return for a touchdown in the season opener against Syracuse down in Atlanta. And it's just continued to play well since then. And a lot of the passing success that other teams have had against Tennessee has come throwing to the opposite side of the field, where they've been going after freshman Ty Redmond, who's been in there at cornerback. And he's played pretty well himself, actually had a big play last week against New Mexico State. But to have Colton Hood on one side of the field, you know, most teams are not throwing his way because he's a pretty aggressive corner, likes to make big plays and tends to kind of bait quarterbacks into making bad throws sometimes.

And, you know, it's better not to test him because he is capable of making them pay. So, yeah, they've got some guys playing well defensively individually. Now it's just sort of trying to get everybody else around them to play well as a unit because they've still been a bit up and down defensively. Better in their last two games. But Saturday will be a good test for them on the road. They've got to play better against the pass in particular than they have for most of the season.

They don't want to make D.J. Lagway, who's had a pretty disappointing season overall, that they don't want him to have a better end to his season by making himself look good against the Tennessee secondary that's been pretty bad for a lot of the season. Ryan Callahan, Go Vols 247. It's hard to believe National Signing Day or Early Signing Day, whichever way you want to look at it, is less than two weeks away. Does Tennessee keep most of their commitments and will they flip anyone at the end?

[47:40] Well, it looks like they've got a good chance of still adding some additional help to the class. They flipped a couple weeks ago, or I guess a few weeks ago now, flipped a Cal commitment at a tight end. Luka Wolfe, an international prospect, addressing their need at tight end. So they've added some help recently, and they're still in on several guys. Some guys committed to other schools, but some others who are not committed to other schools. One of them being Jordan Carter, a four-star defensive lineman, edge rusher from the Atlanta area.

That's a former Texas A&M commitment. Still battling for him. They hosted him on an official visit last weekend. Still battling for a couple of UCLA commitments. The big one is Micah Smith, a four-star offensive lineman from down in Florida. Wisconsin running back commitment, Amari Latimer. It's a four-star out of Georgia that Tennessee has been recruiting for a long time. So there are definitely still some pretty big names out there that Tennessee is hoping to add to its class down the stretch here, and they're in some battles.

But as far as holding on to their own commitments, not currently aware of anybody that might be in danger. But that being said, things can surface pretty quickly and become a threat without much warning. And that certainly was the case with Legend Bay, a former Tennessee committee who flipped to Ohio State just recently after taking an official visit to Ohio State a couple weeks ago. So always possible something could unexpectedly surface down the stretch. But they've got a top-ten class that's now up to number seven in the team rankings on 24-7 sports after our rankings update yesterday.

That looks pretty good. And right now we're not aware of anyone who's a real flight risk, at least with less than two weeks to go until signing day. Yeah, I keep hearing the same thing you do, that most of the SEC teams are going to be able to keep their commitments already. Rick Barnes, SEC basketball, looks like another banner year for men's and women's. Tell us a little bit about Tennessee men's basketball so far. Yeah, off to a good start. It's a team that has as much depth, if not more depth, than Rick Barnes has probably ever had at Tennessee.

But it's a bit of a different-looking team than what they've had the past couple years after having such success out of the transfer portal with guys like Dalton Connect and Chaz Lanier. You know, not quite the same perimeter scoring threat on this team. And it's a team that seems to be built a little bit more around its postgame early on in the season. It looks like that's kind of how they are playing. They've got some other guards that they can play and that they're trying to play right now to see if they can sort of develop that perimeter game that they're going to need at some point.

But they're a little bit of a – it looks like they're going to be a little bit of a change-up for teams. And that might play to their benefit in some cases because they're going to be such an odd matchup. You don't see many teams playing sort of an inside-out game. And that may be what Tennessee does for a lot of the year with five-star freshman Nate Amitt being one of the guys that can kind of give them a little bit more of a perimeter or more of a postgame presence than they've had in recent years.

So they've got some interesting depth up and down the roster, but especially at the wing and in the post where they're going to be a pretty tough matchup for a lot of teams they face, especially with their length. So they're a good team, expected to certainly be an NCAA tournament team again and one of those top teams in the SEC as they've been in recent years. But, you know, exactly how good I think remains to be seen because with so many new pieces, they're sort of a work in progress, off to a good start.

But they'll get their first test here in the coming days with the non-conference schedule having some other tougher games coming up, including a game against Houston in Las Vegas. It should be a good test for them. Yeah, Houston beat Auburn on Sunday, 73-72. That Kevin Sampson, physicality still in play there. Great stuff as always. You know, you can have pre-game, post-game coverage from the Swamp. Recruiting, as you highlighted, basketball, men's and women's. A lot of stuff on your plate going on. Where can we get online and get the latest?

Yeah, govolts247.com. As you said, plenty happening, plenty to cover in the coming days. Yeah, basketball in full swing and all that happening on the football front. And no matter what happens Saturday in the Swamp, it will not be dull. It'll be one of those games. Fans will have a lot to celebrate or a lot to be angry about. Good afternoon and welcome back in for our tour of the Boom O' Buck Show. I'm Harold Bugg alongside Brett Beaird. Baby, where have you been? How are you? Well, I could probably ask you the same question, but I'm glad that the dentist office released you to come back to the Boom O' Buck Show. Well, I just made my latest payment for my Dentist Kids College Fund.

They're going to Harvard and Yale based on the rate I am paying. I guarantee you that. Good to be back in the south. You know what else is good, B.B.? And that's his kickoff this hour with Jimmy Lay. He's got it all covered there at AL.com. Jimmy, welcome in. How are you? Hey, guys. Doing great. Here we are. Getting winded this season down. And this is, I'll tell you what, this is when you've got to be clicking on all cylinders to get it done.

Well, talk about that, Jimmy. But I also want to talk about the changing of the guard. And anyone who's been around high school football in North Alabama for any time knows the first family of coaches in the community of Cortland is the White family. Off that tree, Kelvis White, not in Cortland, but over in Madison, hanging it up after six seasons at Bob Jones. Your thoughts about the news and where do the Patriots go from here? You know, I'm not really sure what direction they're going to go in.

This kind of hit us out of the blue, you know, and he's done a great job at Bob Jones. They started out so hot at the beginning of the season and then they just hit a wall. It just seemed like they just couldn't get a win. But I'm not really sure if they have somebody that is on the coaching staff right now that may step up and take over that job. Or if they may look somewhere else. There's some coaches out there, I'm telling you. You know, Jacob Kelly just left Cherokee County.

[1:03:22] He's a great coach. Somebody to look at. Phil Phillips, not an on-y-on anymore. He's a tremendous coach. So, there's some coaches out there if you want to do an exhaustive search. But it just depends on what they're most comfortable with. Absolutely. I've heard some names already, Jimmy. We can speculate on it. But, yeah, that is a plumb job in North Alabama. Jimmy, let's ask you about some of the games to begin with. Mars Hill, 12-0 going to Geraldine. Two of the best teams in North Alabama.

Certainly, two of the best coaches. Darrell Higgins at Mars Hill. Michael Davis now is the fifth season at Geraldine. Mars Hill just keeps doing Mars Hill stuff. They've won 17 consecutive games. The second-longest active winning streak in the state. Wadley's at 24. Hudson, Higgins, Jackson, Penn have just been running over everybody. They've ran for a combined 2,500 yards. Mars Hill's averaging 52 points a game. But Geraldine's really good, too. They're keeping opponents to only 15. I know you know a lot about Geraldine. These two teams, I thought, would be facing each other sooner or later.

Very tough, challenging game for Mars Hill on the road to Geraldine. Yeah, I believe Geraldine put them out a few years ago. Yeah, they did. In the quarterfinals like that. And it was a low-scoring game. I believe it was like a 17-14. And I think that's kind of what Geraldine would need to be able to get the win. It's going to be wet. That could affect some things. But neither one of these teams are really putting up in the air a lot. Geraldine likes to use a quarterback.

John Beck Wade, he's got 1,400 yards, 26 touchdowns. And when you've got a quarterback that runs the ball like that, you just never know. Mars Hill's going to have to do a great job. And I'm sure they've worked in practice all week trying to get ready for this game. Mars Hill's averaging 324 yards a game, right? I mean, they just – Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's what they do. They just crank it out. They just keep on staying ahead of the chains, getting those first downs. And Geraldine is going to have to get them into some third and long situations, force them to do something they don't want to do.

And I think the team that can – especially if it's tight in the fourth quarter – can force the other team to have to throw the ball. That may be the team that comes up with the key turnover or is able to get a stop when they need it. I lean towards Mars Hill just because they've been so dominant, but it wouldn't shock me if somehow Geraldine pulled the upset. And the thing is, you look at it, when we get to this point, you don't always recognize the other teams, so you go strictly on record.

The question is, what kind of schedule do they have? We know Mars Hill's had a tough schedule. Your thoughts about Geraldine back to Mars Hill, they are familiar with that neck of the woods as far as traveling because Scottsboro's down the mountain from there. You go up on the mountain, you get to Geraldine there, so they're familiar with that trek of the woods just a couple or so weeks ago. We know Mars Hill's had a tough schedule. Can Geraldine match that when they come into this contest?

Well, I tell you, at first thought, I thought, well, Geraldine's probably played a tougher schedule, but then when I actually looked at the numbers, you know, the opponents' record for Mars Hill is 71-62, and Geraldine's is only 60-67. And I guess I was thinking that because they're in the same region with Fife, and they were able to beat Fife, and they're always the standard, you know. But, I mean, look at Mars Hill. I mean, they opened up with Madison Academy, perennial playoff team. You know, they ended the season playing Scottsboro, who won, you know, their region.

So, I think both teams have played about comparable as far as the schedules go. It'll just, like I said, it just depends on tomorrow night who can get the stops when you need it. And you know how these games go. When a team starts to get it rolling, it's just really hard to stop them. And Mars Hill just seems to always get things rolling, especially this time of year. Jimmy, I saw Musa Shoals last week. Parker put them out last year 34-10. Musa Shoals did some amazing adjustments at halftime for Scott Baston.

They had a 14-7 deficit, came back 1-17-14. That Musa Shoals defense only allowing 7.6 points per game. They intercepted three passes last week. Very impressive. Kate Clemens, Davian Reynolds, Tapscott. We've talked about these guys a lot during the course of the season. It doesn't get any easier. Mountain Brook beat Fort Payne 35-14. Fort Payne put out Athens a little bit earlier. And they have an interesting quirk with their stadium. The home and Vistar sidelines are on the same side. I don't know if I have heard of that, but it's an interesting quirk that they've got.

[1:08:34] But Musa Shoals trying to stay undefeated. They may end up playing clay in another week or so. We'll see how it goes. Can Musa Shoals stay undefeated traveling to Mountain Brook? I think they can. Their defense is what's travel. Even when the offense is not maybe clicking on all cylinders, the defense, it just never goes into a slump. You just look at their numbers they're putting up. They're just not giving up any points. And if Mountain Brook is going to win, you're going to have to score over 20 points to beat Musa Shoals.

And I'm just not sure that Mountain Brook can do that. They've played some tough teams. And you look at it and you say, well, Musa Shoals is undefeated. Mountain Brook's lost two or lost three. But who'd they lose to? I mean, that's the Parker. They lost to Clay Chalkville. And they lost to Pell City. So, I mean, in a tight one, like 10-3. So, they've lost to some really good teams. But I don't know if they're going to come up against a defense that's quite as good as Musa Shoals.

And, again, if the weather plays any part in this at all, advantage to Musa Shoals because they will shut you down. And if you can't run the ball a little bit against Musa Shoals, you are not going to beat them. Jimmy Lay, AL.com. Something else they've got. It's a veteran coach. He's got based. And you go back. He reminds me of Kirby Smart a little bit. Don't look at the halftime score and walk away because last week they were down 14-7. And what does he do again?

He makes the adjustments. You cannot substitute that. You've been there and done that at this level. Your thoughts just about the advantage of having a coaching staff who's been there in these big games and knows how to make halftime adjustments. Absolutely. And they've learned from past failures. You know, they've been in situations like this before. You mentioned last year Parker put them out. I think Parker's the only team that could have put them out last year. To be honest with you, I don't know there was another team that could have beaten Musa Shoals last season.

And to be honest with you, other than Clay Chalkfall, I don't. And they beat Clay Chalkfall last year. So, not sure. You know, you just got to take them one at a time. But you're right. I mean, they have been through the wars, been through the battles. They know what it takes to get it done. And I think that they are going to be more than ready for Mountain Brook. You know, and look, this time of year, anything can happen. We know that. We've seen enough games to know that.

But if I had to put my money on it, I'd say Musa Shoals don't come through. Jimmy, last game to preview, Aniston and Dessler. Aniston undefeated. They put out Madison Academy last week, 44-12. Dessler is 11-1. They're only lost to Wes Morgan. They beat Hamilton 31-30. Garrett Reed blocked an extra point in overtime for Dessler to hang on and win that game. Aniston is really good. Their defense only allowing 10 points per game. We've talked about Dessler a lot. Kendrick Gunn, the running back, Garrett Reed, Price Thornton, et cetera.

Damon Pope is a good quarterback for Aniston. This should be a very good game, too. Undefeated Aniston and Dessler. Yeah, Aniston, we talked about it last week, going up against Madison Academy, just how big they are. They just lean on you and lean on you, and then they're able to hit a big one and break something on you. Dessler had a really tough game last week, and I don't know if that's going to help them, or hopefully they came through that game healthy. It's going to be a war, but again, as we've already talked about with the other games, the weather might play a part in this in terms of how this thing plays out.

Turnovers are so big when you get to this part of the season. We saw that last week in Tuscaloosa, how they didn't handle the turnover battle. But I just think that Aniston is just – there's just not – there's not too many teams that can match up with them on the offensive and defensive line. They're too big. They're going to be able to get those first downs, stay ahead of the chains, especially if the weather is not good. As long as they don't turn the ball over, I think Aniston gets it done.

Jimmy, again, I ask you every week about this. If you're at a game and you see a clip, a touchdown, a big play, and you have recorded it, you can send that. You can text it to AL.com and get it online. As you mentioned, they may become a celebrity at some point because somebody's seen it online. But it's great because, as you mentioned, you can't be at every game, even though a lot of the games now have been cut down going into quarterfinals. How can fans, if they film a big play, how can they send that in?

Before I give you that again, I'll actually be at Good Hope tomorrow night – or actually tonight. They're playing Thursday, trying to get ahead of the weather. That's going to be a tough one. You know, Plainview hadn't been to the semifinals since 1999 when Coach Pruitt was – Dale Pruitt was the coach then, so they're trying to get back to the semifinals. I think they've got a really good chance. They've been there. This is his third stop at Plainview, and so he just loves rainfall. But, yes, if you want to send a clip, send it to at aldotcompreps, and it'll go straight to their X account, and they look at that X account all during the night, and if they find something good, they're absolutely going to take it.

[1:13:58] They're going to put it online, and your play might be something that everybody gets to see that we wouldn't normally get to see. So I really hope that people are out there tonight. There's a few games, and also tomorrow night. Put those things online so we can all see them. We're going to beat as many games as we can, even in the playoffs, so we just can't beat them all. Jimmy, as always, thanks for your time to stay as safe and as dry as you can this week, okay?

We'll do it. Thanks so much, guys. Thank you, Ben. Jimmy Lane hooking up with us from AL.com. It stunk high in the high heaven. That's how you correct the mistakes with the old typewriter. When you make mistakes on the radio, what do you do?

Well, you admit it, quite frankly. I got to multitasking, which I have a difficult time doing that occasionally, and it costs me. I said, Mars Hill Bible is traveling Geraldine. Uh-uh. Mars Hill is hosting Geraldine. In fact, I know that. In fact, I'm going to try to see if I can go to the game tomorrow night. We'll see about the weather is concerned, but, yeah, I stand corrected. John Passarella, the assistant coach at Mars Hill, sent me a text and said, if you lost your mind, you said that we're traveling and we're not.

So, I'm glad to correct that mistake. Geraldine at Mars Hill. We're also very lucky to have two Scholes teams in the quarterfinals playing at home, Dessler and Mars Hill. Yeah, so I don't mean to tell you what to do, but when you go tomorrow night, make sure you go to Dessler and not to Geraldine. I'm not trying to tell you what to do. Thank you. Just a friendly reminder there. Charlie Trotman reminds us all about Auburn football. That's because he knows all about it. From the inside out, former Auburn quarterback, also busy.

When it comes to talk shows, he knows all about the thing called radio talk shows down in the Montgomery area. Charlie, welcome in. How are you? Hey, Harold, you and Brett. Pleased to be with you guys. Hey, buddy. Yeah. Charlie, listen, talk to us about the situation. Interesting times, obviously, on the planes. Been an interesting year. I don't even tell anybody about that. With a quarterback spot, you make a change. You have all this success. And then you come into a game like Mercer, which to me, if you're a coach, it's like, please, don't look at necessarily the name.

They got a good record. And we know what should happen. But crazy things can happen. Talk to us, first of all, about the decision to bench Daniels. At least, here we are, what, on a Thursday. We'll see what happens Saturday. But as for now, bench, because they want to bring him back next year, don't use up his eligibility and have him also ready for the Iron Bowl. Talk to us, Charlie, if you will, from a former Auburn quarterback's perspective on that decision. Well, it's disappointing if you're Ashton Daniels in the sense that you can't play since you've had a good game in your recent outing against Vanderbilt.

But for this particular team, it's probably not as bad a situation because, you know, you've got a quarterback in Jackson Arnold that has played an awful lot this year. And so if they play him or if they play Deuce Knight, either one, they should be able to beat Mercer and go on into the Alabama game with Ashton Daniels at quarterback. But, guys, Mercer is 9-1. They're not a bad team. That's right. You know, you've got to remember what happened when Jacksonville State came to Auburn and when— New Mexico State.

And New Mexico State. And then, what about Georgia State? Georgia State had Auburn beaten if they hadn't converted a fourth down for a touchdown. So, anything can happen. You guys are right. Charlie, we talked about this a little bit yesterday. Whoever the next coach at Auburn is going to be, and we hear a lot about Jon Sumrall, D.J. Durkin, Clark Lee name, he has been added to the list a little bit. But, whoever that coach comes in next year, Auburn's schedule, the road games in the conference, Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Tennessee.

Charlie, that would be tough for Vince Lombardi or whoever the next coach is going to be. Yeah, it's going to be a dawning schedule, and whoever comes into Auburn is going to need to be very cognizant of the quarterback position, guys. Because, as you know, you're going to go pretty much in the SEC how your quarterback plays. That's right. I mean, it doesn't matter, you know, what type coach you are. The only guy that I've seen that's been able to take multiple quarterbacks and just do exceptional work with them is Nick Saban.

I mean, you know, he's won national championships with all kind of quarterbacks. But, you know, for other guys, you know, you look at Clark Lee at Vanderbilt. I mean, what was his record before Pavia got there? And now, you know, he's doing really well, but what will his record be when Pavia's gone? So, sometimes, you know, and another example of that is when Auburn won the national championship in 2010 with Cam Newton. I mean, you know, nobody thought that that team was really a national championship contender.

[1:24:56] But, you know, things worked out that way. But then the next year, it was a horrible year, and the coach got fired. So, you know, I think this is a very, very big decision that John Cohen has to make. And he has said it's going to be his decision to make and his to live with. But, you know, I'm a Jon Sumrall guy. I wouldn't mind if D.J. Durkin got the job, if he comes out in these next two games and does some miraculous stuff.

But other than that, I'd love to keep him as the defensive coordinator and have, you know, Jon Sumrall come in as the head coach. I think that gives Auburn the best chance in the future to have a program that they could be proud of. A couple things on that, Charlie. Your thoughts on when we might finally get the envelope open and get an answer. I know it's all speculation, but you're close to program, and you've been there at that level. And the other thing, you mentioned success for Durkin.

We know he'll probably have it this weekend. What are your thoughts? I haven't got a schedule in front of me. Talk to us about the game after Mercer, what you think might happen there, Charlie. Well, you know, Alabama is going to have so much to play for. My goodness, they're going to be playing for, you know, a place in the college football playoffs. So, but Auburn's got a little bit to play for, too. I mean, you know, just a bowl game is, it may not be a great bowl, but, you know, based on the way that Auburn was looking at the first, you know, first to the mid part of the season, to get to a bowl game, you know, is pretty miraculous based on where they were.

But I think an Alabama-Auburn game is going to be a really hard-fought ball game because both teams are going to want to, you know, they have a little extra to play for. Auburn is going to be playing for D.J. Durkin. You know, these kids are going to be, they know that if D.J. Durkin wins that game, he's got a chance to be the head coach. And, of course, Alabama is playing, you know, for their livelihood in the playoffs. So, I think that, you know, that atmosphere at night, you know, it's going to be a 6.30 kick.

I think that atmosphere at night is going to be, you know, sensational. And what a great, you know, if you're going to go to that game, you know, what an outstanding outing that will be. You know, weather ought to be pretty good and, you know, I'm hoping it's going to be a close game. You can't, you know, with the way that Alabama can score, you know, if they play like they did against Tennessee, you know, it's going to be a difficult game and a difficult night for Auburn.

But, you know, if they're a little bit off and they don't, you know, have their best outing, I think Auburn could, you know, I'm not sure they'll upset them. But it could go into the fourth quarter and, you know, be a tight ball game. Charlie, media reports indicate Deuce Knight will start against Mercer tomorrow. He's thrown all of five passes the entire season. What do you want to see at Deuce Saturday, Charlie? Well, I want to see him take care of the football. I'd like to see him move it around to some of the guys that can make plays for him.

I'd like to see him throw some short routes like we did in the game against Vanderbilt. You know, we threw a lot of passes to Singleton and to Cam Coleman, but not all of them were deep routes. Not all of them were even intermediate routes. We'd throw a seven-yard hitch and then they'd run it for, you know, another six or eight yards. So, you know, I think giving him some easy throws to start with, get his confidence up high, and then, you know, let Auburn dominate the line of scrimmage in the running game because this offensive line is a good run-blocking line.

They're not such a good pass-blocking line. And so, you know, to try to, you know, put the game on Deuce Knight's shoulders, I don't think would be the way that I would, if I was Derek Nix, that's not the way I would call the game. Charlie, do you anticipate Auburn naming officially a head football coach the week after the Iron Bowl? I would think so. I mean, you know, we talked about this a little yesterday, Brett. The timing is so critical, but, you know, with the people that Auburn's looking at, I mean, let's say it's Jon Sumrall.

Well, you know, the college football playoff prognosticators had them at the number 12 position last week, so, or this week. So, you know, does Jon Sumrall agree to come to Auburn? Does he even agree to talk to Auburn until after the season's over? I don't know. I did see something where Jon Sumrall might have taken his name out of the hat in the Florida coaching church. I don't know if that's true or not, but it sounds good to me as being an Auburn fan. You'd like to, you know, he's our number one choice, I think, and you like the fact that he's not maybe looking at other places.

[1:30:26] You know, his wife went to Auburn, and he's from Huntsville. So, you know, it seems logical. But then again, he coached at Ole Miss. So, if Lane Kiffin leaves Ole Miss, you know, Ole Miss may be after him. So, it's hard to say, guys. I don't know. But I would think that Auburn would try to name a coach as soon as the Iron Bowl is over. Yeah, I would agree with you there, Charlie. Listen, I always enjoy reminiscing with you. Special game next week on the Plains, 6.30 at night.

I keep hearing it's going to be cold. But they do play football. It's cold on both sides of the field. Charlie, have a great Thanksgiving to you and Charlie Jr., Whitney, your wife, and all of your family. I can't tell you much, Harold, and I enjoy talking with you about Auburn and the SEC. We'll try to look at your schedule next week. Next week. But, listen, have a great Thanksgiving, and thank you again for coming on. Well, thanks so much, guys. I sure appreciate your show.

Well, I appreciate you. And I think, Brett, your advice is certainly going to have to be taken to heart. I saw a number today. Iron Bowl temperature, 32 degrees. I listened to it live, the media teleconference, and that's not the TV version. That's something that we do afterwards. Went back, listened to it.

I had to go back just to make sure that I heard what I was listening to. It was cheesy. It was very, very, very, very, very cheesy. It almost sounded like somebody had done one of those AI things, and it was like parody. Like we were trying to create some kind of parody account and try to be funny out of it. It was, wow. And, you know, I know a lot of Alabama people, excuse me, there's a lot of people that don't like Alabama. But this is when the SEC fans need to stick together because what they're doing is they're telling you that strength of schedule is not as important.

And that should apply to all 16 teams. And it should be alarming that they're about to go to nine, right? I mean, they're about to go to nine. That's a, you know, pretty crazy little part. Yeah. You know, that we're going to go to nine, and the strength of schedule that we were told back in the summer that was going to be an important part of the metrics, you know, is there. So they're not going to count it as much. And I almost wonder now if it's a mistake because if they're not going to count it, I'm not sure the motivation would be there to go to nine if you're asking me.

And Greg Sankey seems to be a step behind. He used to be a step ahead. It feels like he's a step behind at the current point. And I agree with you, Ryan. And I said that from the outset because bottom line is across the country, and here's what's ironic about it, a lot of folks say they don't want Alabama in. If you are in the TV business, you're an idiot. And don't just take it. This is not Alabama station talking. The facts speak from themselves. Go back and look at the team that draws the biggest eyeballs in the nation as far as games this year and past years.

And here's why. It's not that people out there, outside of Alabama, people don't like Alabama. It's the old Western script, good guy, bad guy. People tune in. When they see a score that they're watching of another game, and Alabama's behind in the fourth quarter, they tune that game out and go to Alabama because they hate Alabama. That makes money whether they love Alabama or not. It makes money for that network with their ratings. But at the same time, this committee seems to say we've got to minimize the SEC exposure.

We want to get Notre Dame in because that's big money when it comes to the big markets like Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. Correct me if I'm wrong. No, Alabama. I mean, listen, they need Alabama to be able to walk through this. I mean, I just saw a number a couple of minutes ago that Nelson ratings are out. Alabama's the most watched college football team. Right. And it's not because people like them. In fact, it's because people hate them, Brian, as much as anything else.

Yeah. And so, you know, here we are with this, and it's just, it's just, I guess I'm really confused. I know it's a hard metric, but I go back to the process of selecting the committee. Right. It just appears, I have a process, like, I need to know as a media member more transparency. I need to know, and what we did is we hired Bill Hancock, okay? Bill Hancock could take a pile of dog masks and make it look like a dozen red roses. I mean, he was a smooth talker.

[1:41:02] He was a nice guy. I mean, oh, I love you, Harold and Brad and Ryan, and man, it's just, we're grateful to be here. Yeah, I mean, he was the perfect guy, and really, that created some doubt with the way that the system was designed, right? The way that the system was designed. It's one of those things that when I look at it and I begin to analyze it, it's just a committee process of selecting. Allow me to see what's happening. You know, if you really want to be transparent, put a camera back there.

Guys, we're airing pillow fighting on some of these TV networks, okay? Right. Allow me, we had the same questions last November that we're having today, and we were told throughout the offseason the strength of schedule was going to be such an important – I mean, guys, we had – they talked about losses and quality losses and even not able to run the football. Right. Well, I'm curious, and when you look at the committee, I was trying to get in the question, and I was not caught upon in that 30-minute press conference, and that's okay.

I mean, many times that happened, so it wasn't like they were just trying to get me. But I wanted to go back to the strength of schedule. But, you know, I mean, since rushing yards are so important and losing to Florida State, which should be important – I mean, you've got to be accountable for the losses. Losing to Oklahoma is a thing. But I look back, and I'm curious, does it really matter if Kalen O'Brien wears the black shirt to the committee, or is the red shirt more – I mean, we're now analyzing – I mean, they told us about South Carolina, they told us about LSU, that they were able to win, but they were – I'm telling you, and I don't like using this.

I mean, Hunter is a moron. I mean, the guy has got to be – he's an egomaniac up in Arkansas. I'm telling you, he did it literally for this attention. Like, I can see when people are doing it for authentic reasons, he did it because he's now being talked about on every radio show across the country. I mean, his explanation was as just bogus. And like I said, the other SEC schools, you better bond together. And we had a caller yesterday that's really anti-SEC, and he said, you know, we're all in this thing together.

We're all in this thing together. And we are. I mean, because the strength of schedule is not going to get any easier for the SEC. And if they can't understand that this play in this league is more difficult than playing in other places, hey, you know, I guess it is what it is. Well, Hunter needs to go back to the polo club. He is – he's above his head when it comes to – maybe he's into soccer football. I don't know. He's not into SEC football. And I agree with you.

We need to get the Arkansas folks on and get their perspective of him, just where his football IQ is. Oh, yeah. Well, and trust me, they're not very happy. I mean, they are very, very angry. And you know what? Any other fan base out here that an athletic director is trying to get the media stroke, you know, he got his little media folks to go out here and campaign for him. Right. And anyway, it's just a – it's pretty crazy when you step back and really look at it that we've got an AD that's so media hungry that, you know, he wanted to go sign up for this and put himself out there.

And, you know, I mean, if you look back and you chase the tail, it's pretty easy to chase, right? I mean, it's pretty crazy. And Greg Sankey passed out a six-page manifesto at the end of the spring meeting at San Destin, emphasizing strength of schedule. And that's what I've seen all the media talk about – a lot of the media talk about this week, Ryan, is that they say, look, put Alabama and Notre Dame to the side for a minute. What does this mean for every team when you're putting more emphasis on bad losses, and particularly one that happened August the 31st versus four quality wins that Alabama won back-to-back-to-back-to-back?

No one's ever done that in the SEC from number four to number 23. That should – as you mentioned, Ryan, that should concern everyone. No, it should. Absolutely. Yeah, I mean, it should. But I just – I look back at this committee, and listen, I know Auburn fans, you know, they're celebrating because it's now a chance for them to – you know, but it was even prior to the rankings. So, you know, there's nothing Alabama and Auburn fans can agree upon, right? I mean, the sun came up from the east this morning.

That might be the only thing that I can think of that they can agree upon. Maybe. But it's – yeah, maybe. Okay, but we've all lived in this state. But it's one of those things – you know, I don't think Auburn's got anything – any fear anytime soon of having to worry about the playoffs. I mean, it seems that's a long way away when you think about it. Who knows? The NIL, you can go to the portal and maybe they're – but when you look at the strength of schedule, if you're telling me that it's no longer a value, guys, I almost feel like you retract the nine games.

[1:46:26] Now, I know you did it for TV, but I just don't know if there's a need. I mean, because what you're doing is you're preventing the SEC from possibly winning a national title in the future. I mean, because of the grind. And you're not just doing it. You're doing it in a grind where the depth is a major factor in college athletics. And NIL even is a playing field. You're almost guaranteed two losses going forward. That's a good team, let alone three or four. But be that as it may, it's the real world.

That's where you have to live. Ryan, your thoughts, obviously, what they want to work on this weekend against Eastern Illinois. And then, of course, we know the obvious question after that, getting ready for the aforementioned Iron Bowl. Yeah, wow. I mean, Eastern Illinois, they're a dynamic football team. I got a lot of respect. Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. That was Hunter from Arkansas talking. You stole Hunter's script. Yeah. We have a tremendous amount of respect. We love Eastern Illinois. They've got great players. I covered 17 years of Coach Saban.

And every one of these mid-major games was the same that he would always address. So, when I look at East Illinois, I think it's time to get back in rhythm. Right? It's a bad opponent. But you need to try to find a way to get back in rhythm. Right. If offenses lack that, I think this is one of those that you can find a way to get back in rhythm. And we'll see if they're able to do it. But I'd love to see Alabama establish some of that rushing attack.

Maybe physically, you know, you did some of that stuff against Oklahoma. But I think when you step back for just a couple of minutes, try to find a way to get that rhythm back. Because you need it as you go across the state in a very hostile environment that's not going to allow you to probably establish some of that rhythm. And you need to get some confidence back for Ty Simpson. He was playing with a tremendous amount of confidence. Try to find a way to get it back.

Try to find a way to get it back. Maybe some of those deep balls. Maybe put some things on tape that you've been working on. Let them do some things to let them think a little bit about that. That's what I expect. But, guys, you guys have been around this. And I've been thinking about this topic. This has got to be one of the most important iron balls in a long, long time. Absolutely. Because if you look at it for Auburn, they're fighting to break what has been a run of all these losing seasons in a row.

They're fighting for a chance to go to a bowl game. They're fighting for a chance to stop Alabama from going to the college football playoffs. I mean, there's a lot at stake at this game. And, you know, most iron balls have a significant role. But this one just seems to be amplified to a different level. And, hey, it'll be one of the topics that I'm sure that we'll get into when you look at, you know, is this the most important iron ball that we have played in the last 15 or 20 years?

It could be, you know, because if Alabama wins this game and they're going to win the SEC and make the college football playoffs. And I don't need to discuss what will happen if Cable on the board goes down and lose to an interim coach. It will become a very uncomfortable environment. However you want to define that is what it's going to be. And, you know, that's the risk we play. It's crazy. I mean, the world we live in is ever-changing. By the way, Ryan Fowler, you know, you've got to get off and get ready for your show.

A tip of the count to Nate Oates. Yeah. As Alabama beat a No. 8 Illinois team 90-86, they lost the rebounding by two. But Bristow, who played the first time this year in a REL and he had 11 rebounds, those two combined for 19 rebounds in that game. Played with tenacity. The defense looked really good. Kudos to Nate Oates. And they began the Las Vegas NIL tournament on Monday against Gonzaga. But this team has a lot of potential. But who have you got on the show today? And where can we get online your good, the bad, and the ugly article that you do?

Who's on today? And where can we listen and also look at your great article? Well, I appreciate the good, the bad, and the ugly plug. But today, and I've got some great guests. I've got Blake Brackemeyer who's going to be a part of our guest. We've got some Rodney Orr, Josh from College Football Nerds. But starting at 2 o'clock, I'm going to address some pretty major rumors that are out there. There's a lot of buzz in Pennsylvania that involves Kalen DeBoer. And I'm going to address those head-on coming up here in just a couple of minutes.

And about eight minutes away, I've been talking to some people. I feel pretty confident that I've got my information. And I'm going to hit those head-on starting at 2 o'clock. So that'll be probably the big topic that we'll get into coming up here in about seven minutes in Tuscaloosa. Tide109.com. I appreciate you guys as always. Ryan, we appreciate you taking time out there. Ryan Fowler tied 109 FM down in Tuscaloosa. BB, obviously, your thoughts about that. Normally, you don't get into a lot of rumor talk because this time of the year, there's so much out there.

[1:51:44] It's like a shotgun. In your opinion, how much teeth do you think it has if DeBoer's Penn State? Well, I don't think it has any, and Ryan Fowler's got some impeccable contacts inside the university. And he would know. I don't think there's anything to it whatsoever, potentially Kellen DeBoer going to Penn State. I'd heard that earlier in the year, quite frankly. But I don't think there's anything to it. It is 2025. Stay tuned. It's going to take care of business for now. Later on tonight, here on 93.9 The Score, we do can tell you this.
