[0:00] Boomo Bugg on 93.9 The Score. You know my brother, by as well as I do, being a TV star in Janxville, is that beginning to go to his head? Well, it is, and you know what he told me? He said, Bill, I'll buy you lunch tomorrow. I said, you cheat, skate, and stuff for me anyway. Same place he bought the last lunch for you, right? That's exactly right. Yeah, I mean, if that don't sound like a television diva, I don't know what is. Oh, Lois, a TV diva now.
Kiss my ring, Bill, kiss my ring. The Boomo Bugg Show, weekdays noon to two on 93.9 The Score. Now, get ready to roll, Shoals, Decatur, Athens, and all of northwest Alabama and southern Tennessee. It's time for the Valley's exclusive FM sports voice. The Boomo Bugg Show. New exclusive inside track to the tie, Tigers, Tennessee, and the rest of the SEC. Now, your host, Harold Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Good afternoon and welcome here to the Boomo Bugg Show. I'm Harold Bugg alongside Brett Beaird. Thank you so much for giving us free ride around the Tennessee Valley.
Brett Beaird, welcome in to the good, the bad, and the ugly. Where do we break huddle with a Monday afternoon quarterback? Happy Monday to you and the listeners. Alabama's defense smothers LSU. Auburn finds an offense but loses in overtime to Bandy. And unfortunately, UNA loses another close game to West Virginia. 13 Shoals teams and area teams advanced at the second round of the playoffs. And BenThomasAveille.com will tell us who might get to the quarterfinals. But Adam is here right now to update his latest SEC hour rankings.
Adam is Adam Spencer. He's busy there. It's Saturday down south. Adam, welcome in to the Monday after. How are you? Hey, guys. I'm doing good. How are you? Hey, bud. Man, we're in a zip code here. Correct us if we're wrong on this, Adam. Have you ever been in one of those twilight zone feelings where a team wins, but the fans feel like they lose? A team loses, but the fans feel like they win. In other words, Alabama fans are walking away. I know they beat LSU, but Auburn fans are saying, I told you so, Hugh Freeze.
That was a quarterback. Adam, where do you start indulging our zip code today? Yeah, I mean, I think you just really have to question what Hugh Freeze was doing with that Auburn offense, because, I mean, like, you and I could figure out, throw the ball to Cam Coleman. Yeah. I mean, credit to the Auburn interim staff for actually doing that. I mean, you know, you see what happens. He had that left-handed touchdown grab, and then he followed it up with a right-handed two-point conversion grab. So, I mean, I don't know what Hugh Freeze was doing, but get the ball to Cam Coleman, and, you know, you'll put touchdowns on the board, and, you know, it's just such a difference from the embarrassment against Kentucky to, yeah, they lost, and, yeah, there's, you know, there's, they deserve questions will be asked about the defensive performance, but, yeah, Ash and Daniels looked good and got the ball to the playmakers.
Adam, Alabama's defense does a very good job of smothering LSU, holding them to three field goals. The Alabama offense seems to have actually regressed. Ty Simpson misses some deep throws. The Tide still struggles to run the football. We will find out against Oklahoma and Tuscaloosa on Saturday. No question Alabama was in control of the game. Texas A&M should have been much more dominant if they hit three or four more plays. I know you moved Texas A&M, and right now I can't argue with that.
You've got Texas A&M in your SEC rankings, number one, after their win over Missouri, and then Alabama, you moved down to number two. Both still good teams, but right now I would agree with you. Texas A&M probably is the most complete team in the SEC. Yeah, Texas A&M looked really good, you know, backup quarterback from Mizzou. You know, that was a tough assignment for Matt Zollers, but, yeah, they looked really good. They took control of that game in the second half with their running game.
Yeah, I mean, Alabama, it all starts with the running game. You know, they just can't get going on the ground, and that, you know, puts undue pressure on Ty Simpson in the passing attack. And, you know, yeah, they deserve credit for doing a lot to win, because, you know, that credit, or that LSU defense, you know, the strength is the secondary, you know, with Mansoor, Delane, and some of those, you know, Delane's going to be a first-round pick, maybe top-ten pick. Like, he's that good. So, you know, he just takes away whoever he's on.
You know, they don't even really target the guys that he covers anymore. So, you know, that was going to be a challenge, trying to, you know, be one-dimensional against the team as good as LSU. So that was, you know, but, you know, credit to them for making enough plays to win, and credit to the defense for just, you know, standing tall and, you know, really bending, but not breaking, and forcing some of those field goals instead of touchdowns, even if LSU did give them a gift there with, like, two delay-of-game penalties, and then Garrett Nussmaier spinning right to the hands of a defensive lineman.
[5:31] Adam Spencer in the huddle with us, Saturday down south. Bama with a whopping 56 yards, total rushing the ball. This is Alabama. This is not McNeese State. Your thoughts coming into this ballgame this weekend. Oklahoma, they got good stats, but they've shown that you're a Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde on defense, too, against opponents like Illinois State and others. Yes, they dominate up against Ole Miss, and maybe some of the others, not so much. We're going to find out this weekend. Your thoughts about how much pressure is on Ty Simpson.
To me, I see him pressing because of that, Adam, because right now there's nothing there to rely on when it comes to running games, so it looks like he's putting everything on his shoulders to make sure that he passes and is as perfect, and he's hard on himself anyway, as possible. Your thoughts, where do you break it down, and how that affects this ballgame coming in? I don't care who they got their defense stats against. They're pretty darn good. Adam, where do you start breaking down this weekend's showdown?
Yeah, I do think that Ty Simpson puts a little bit too much pressure on himself, and it leads to some pressing. You know, I was watching the Bills-Dolphins game yesterday, and they had a good note about Tua, and Tua was saying that he has to sometimes watch his highlights to remind himself that he can be a really, really good NFL quarterback, and I think that that's something that maybe Kaitlin DeBoer and Ryan Grubb should do with Ty Simpson. Show them some of those early season highlights and just be like, look, this is you.
This is what we know you can be, and you just need to play the game the way that you were earlier in the season without… Show them highlights of the Georgia game. That was a really good performance against an elite team, and I think that that's a good game to maybe look at as a game plan, because, yeah, Oklahoma has a really good defense, but they don't really… They've done more lately, but it was like the first half of the season they didn't force the turnover, so as long as Simpson can play clean, which he has done all year, even when he's not making plays, he's not really putting the ball in too much danger, so I think that he'll do enough to win again, but he's just got to start playing some…
Looking like he's having fun out there a little bit more like he was earlier in the year. Tom, the marquee game, Adam, Texas and Georgia between the hedges, you've got Texas ranked number five in your power ranking, Georgia number three. I thought Georgia may have had their most complete game, ran for over 300 yards against the Mississippi State team. I wonder how much they've got left in the tank right now. Still got Ole Miss at the end of the year. You know, everybody talking about the battle of the cornerbacks with Arch and Gunnar Stockton, who has really been playing well the last couple of weeks.
Very interesting game with COPE implications. Texas and Georgia Saturday night on ABC. Yeah, I mean, that's one of two games that involves these top five SEC teams that still have a chance at Atlanta. You know, Ole Miss doesn't play any of the other top five teams. Alabama doesn't. But, you know, Texas plays Georgia and then ends the season with Texas A&M. So those are the two really elimination games, kind of. I mean, it might not matter because A&M and Alabama might just, you know, run the table.
But, you know, we'll see. But, yeah, this is a good one. And, you know, Georgia, I think, really made that statement by not struggling. I think that that was probably something that Kirby Smart was aware of all week long, just saying, you know, we've struggled. But, like, everybody's saying that this is a trap game and we're looking ahead to Texas. Let's go out and show them that we're not. And I think that that was probably a pretty darn good coaching job from a pretty darn good coach this week.
Adam, you're right. If Alabama and Texas A&M hold serve, we know it's going to be in the SEC championship game. But if Alabama stumbles, or for that matter, Texas A&M stumbles, boy, it would be interesting if you've got one unbeaten team say Texas A&M wins out, but everybody else has one loss. Are you going to be the one who determines who plays Texas A&M in the championship game? Yeah, I mean, that would be, you know, we'll have to go deep into the tiebreakers.
We have four one-loss teams, I guess. So we'll see what happens there. But, you know, I think even, you know, three one-loss teams might even make it even tougher with, you know, some of the head-to-heads and, you know, lack of head-to-heads with some of these top teams. So, you know, I don't envy whoever has to, you know, break down the numbers there if that's what ends up happening. But, I mean, I do expect Alabama to probably win out here. I mean, I think, you know, we were talking about the Oklahoma game, but I think it's going to be another ugly win.
But, you know, Alabama has shown that it can win ugly this year. Adam, can we take one name off of the coaching hot seat? And that would be Mr. Mark Stoops at Lexington. They just embarrassed Florida. 38-7. Now, they play Tennessee Tech, and everybody's thinking, well, what's the big deal? About that. Tennessee Tech's 10-0. They're one of the best FCS teams in the country. But, Adam, I'll give Mark Stoops a lot of credit. I mean, he was dead man walking about three or four weeks ago.
[10:47] Kind of revitalized. Cutter Boley is beginning to come into his own. And, quite frankly, unless something else happens, he may be back for 20-26. But, right now, they beat Tennessee Tech. That'd be a three-game win-to-winning streak. Yeah, he deserves, Stoops deserves a lot of credit for that. I mean, he also deserves a bit of criticism for, you know, not starting Boley earlier in the year. Like, what are we doing with Zach Calzada? I mean, come on. Like, we know. Nobody thought that that was going to work.
No. So, you know, I think that, yeah, Kentucky's playing really well. And you've got to, you know, they haven't quit on Mark Stoops. You know, with Florida, you've got to wonder, like, can they fire the interim coach? Exactly. Can we get an interim to the interim? Like, what do we got to do there to see what they can do? So, yeah, I mean, credit to Kentucky, though, because they have not quit. And that's, it's awesome to see. And, you know, yeah, like you said, I think Tennessee Tech's winning streak, they're 10-0 this year.
And I think they're on a 15-game overall winning streak or something like that. So, I mean, like, what a team that is. And, yeah, they, you know, everybody's going to say, oh, it's a cupcake. No, far from it. No. Fortunately, Kentucky comes into this game with a lot of confidence. Adam, talk to us about that. You get that bump. We saw it Saturday night with LSU. They came out fired up, got off to a decent start. And then, of course, the cream seems to always rise to the top.
But back to Auburn. Obviously, they came out with a hair on fire. Who would have thought about a month ago that Auburn would have scored that many points against a ranked team under Hugh Freeze? Your thoughts about the balance of the season now that it's pretty much set in stone, the way things are going to be on the balance of the schedule for Auburn. Yeah, I mean, I think that it was, you know, that it was just like kind of a different story. You know, earlier in the year, they were, you know, in these low-scoring games, just finding ways to lose.
But now they're in a high-scoring game and find a way to lose. So, I mean, yeah, credit to them for, you know, not rolling over like they did in that disaster against Kentucky that got Hugh Freeze fired. But, I mean, yeah, you know, you've still got to win some of these games. So, I mean, we'll see. I think that, you know, DJ Durkin says all the right things, but I just don't know that Auburn fans would be happy if he was the full-time hire. But, you know, we'll see how that coaching search plays out.
And, you know, I just think that, you know, you can do a lot worse and you can be a dangerous team for Alabama if you just, you know, stick to the plan that you showed of getting Vanderbilt to throw the ball to the receivers, Cam Coleman and Eric Sigleton. Just get those guys the ball and watch them work. Adam, speaking of Auburn and their opponent, Vanderbilt, once again, Auburn comes out with a hair on fire, gets hit 17-3, and then Pavia does Pavia things. They rallied to eventually win the game, 45-38.
He has a combined, I believe, 480 yards, whatever it was. Just another remarkable performance. Adam, again, when you look at the classic NFL profile of a quarterback, he's nowhere near it. But he just wills that team to win. He is so tough. He's in the perfect offense. Bandy, again, with an outside chance, maybe, to make the playoffs. But congratulations again. Pavia finished his career 3-0 against Auburn. And 4-0, or 5-0, again, I guess it was still just, you know, he didn't get a chance to make it, win against Hugh Freeze again.
But, you know, he had a couple wins over Hugh Freeze. That's right. He went during his time at New Mexico State, too, and when Hugh Freeze was at Liberty. So, I'm sure he's bummed that Hugh Freeze wasn't able to stick around for one more loss to Vanderbilt. But, yeah, he'll have to settle for that. So, Adam, before we get away, Missouri, obviously, it was close. But your thoughts now about the balance of the season for you, Tigers. And will Drinkwitz be the head coach of Missouri next season?
Oh, man, I don't know. I mean, I think if he's interested in one of these other jobs, we'll probably find out in the next couple of weeks. You know, I don't think, you know, if he's going to take the Florida job, which, I mean, it seems like the one that has the most buzz about it, then I think we'll find out in the next couple of weeks. Because, yeah, now it's, you know, the losses, the three losses pretty much preclude Mizzou from any sort of playoff consideration here.
So, yeah, it's a bummer that the team wasn't able to take advantage of a relatively easy schedule by SEC standards. But, I mean, when you have the quarterback injury luck that they had, it's just tough to overcome. Adam, great stuff. We always enjoy beginning Monday with you to recount the SEC weekend. But where can we get your good stuff? I know Joe Cox is on with us tomorrow. You've got such a good team. Where can we get on line to get everything? Yeah, SaturdayDownSouth.com. The Big Apple for Alabama basketball and cashing out moments ago, BB, in the latest AP poll. Yeah, they're up to number eight. And I tell you, Harold, I know a lot of people were watching college football.
I went back and forth, but that was quite a performance by Nate Oates in Alabama. They actually had two or three runs. And once again, you knew Patino would come back. But they jumped ahead where they actually had the double digits with a minute to play. But my goodness, Alabama showed. But I'll tell you one thing. They're facing the number one team in the nation Thursday night. You can hear that game on 93.9. The score. Purdue is awfully good. But what a win by Alabama and New York.
Yeah, in fact, just a moment ago, the poll came out. Alabama knocking off number five, St. John's the time. Alabama eight, as you mentioned. Actually, Purdue, how good is Houston? They just leapfrog Purdue. So, Houston is now number one. So, Alabama and number two, Purdue Thursday night. Where else are you on 93.9 to score? He is always number one. No, the polls. He is the maxer. Max Howell, former assistant coach at Ole Miss and Florida State. And knows all about a thing called sports talk in the Southeast.
Max Howell, welcome in. How are you? Well, it's a little chilly down here in Mississippi today. It was 25 when I got up. And the high today is 37. And it's reached that today already. Yeah. Max, hang on. It'll be 75 by Friday. You live in Mississippi. We live in Alabama. True story, I remember the year that the tornado came through Huntsville. It was about 70, 80 degrees. And by that night, I had a friend. She worked over at CNN. She said, can I come and do a live shot there?
And I talked to the boss and said, okay, there's snow flurries. So, it went from in the 70s or so to snow flurries. So, it's the south, Max. Let's talk about this. Wouldn't we have it any other way? Let's talk about this thing called college football. Max, anything surprise you over the weekend when it came to college football? Well, let's see. Auburn scored 38 and lost. Kentucky scored 38 and would. So, that was a surprise to start with. Well, I'll tell you what I did. I took the three major openings.
I did run back over to Oxford to visit a little bit. I think he stopped shopping himself, and he's going to stay at Auburn. Really? Rightly so. He's got a program. He don't want to have to go somewhere else and re-educate the people about how to run a football program. And how to fit in. Lane is a perfect fit for Oxford. I know that. He is. And he's got it just like he likes it. He's going to probably end up with somewhere between 11 and 13 million a year for the next four years.
And he's got – he don't have to answer to the athletic director. He's just got one guy he answers to. He runs his program. And he had two doctors send the university $30 million last week just to take care of Lane Kiffin. So he's got it all going in the right direction. Now, let's talk about the other two, the jobs that are open. You know, Auburn, I heard what John Cooley said. John said, you know, basically he's the athletic director. He's going to hire the football coach. Well, you know, where's Bobby Loudon?
Will we need him? I don't know. You know, we hadn't gotten to that point yet. Or Pat Dye. Well, Pat Dye, you know, to tell him what to do. But did you go to Florida? They don't know who's in charge down there. They've already told Scott Strickland he's not going to hire the football coach. And so they're going to have a committee. Who wants to get into that thing? The worst one, let's go to Matt Brugge and the governor is going to hire the coach. I mean, it's almost a no-win situation for these guys because they don't know the lay of the land, what they got.
And I will say, I certainly watched LSU ballgame Saturday night. I thought they played better, more enthusiasm. But he's an interim coach. They have an interim athletic director and an interim president on top of that. So, I mean, it's really a mess in this part of the country with the job openings, in particular with Kiffin taking his name out of them, you know, out of the mix. I don't know where they're going to go. And, of course, I know it looked like from Friday night that John's Auburn was going to probably end up being the Auburn coach.
[26:11] That was the word I was getting. But I don't know where you watch that ballgame between Tulane and Vince or not. But John looked like he was distanced himself from the program. If you notice, he never talked to one player, never talked to the team or the coaches. He just walked up and down the sideline, goes into the fourth quarter 30 points up, and he almost loses the ballgame before it's over. And he's supposed to be the defensive guy that can save a program somewhere. And I know John well.
I mean, I knew him well when he was at Troy. He had great success there. And I'm sure he's a good football coach. But either he's distracted or Memphis is a lot better than we all thought. I don't know. I couldn't figure out exactly what the problem was. But I don't know whether he's still the lead candidate going to Auburn or not. So, I think that's my summation for what I'm looking at for the SEC right now. Two big games coming up this week. We know Texas and Oklahoma.
They're going to have to play and play well. I had a huge argument this morning about if Alabama loses the SEC championship game to probably Georgia or Texas A&M, then are they not qualified for basically for the playoff for three losses, even if it was in the championship game? And I did hear another national pundit this morning say, hey, if you're in a conference and you're playing for the championship, both teams are probably going to get the invitation. Well, that's just an opinion right there.
Now, I think they're going to stick to two wins, two losses. And no matter what the streak of schedule is, if a team has got three, I think this first year, I think they're going to get left out. I really do believe that. Max, let me ask you about Alabama. They controlled the game to LSU, the offense. Again, Ty Simpson with some solid numbers, 21-35 for 277. And a touchdown, but he missed. But quite frankly, two deep passes. One of them was basically a layup to Jeremy Bernard, overthrew him, either overthrew or underthrew.
That's a timing pattern. But 56 yards rushing. This team, again, we knew was going to be pass heavy during the course of the year. And I know LSU's defense is a very good to solid defense. Banks, your thoughts, again, on Alabama not being able to run the ball, and Ty Simpson missing on some real opportunities. I think what's happened to them right now, they've realized that it's a c*** shoot where they try to run the football based on what the expectations are. And they know Simpson's had really good success by him running the ball if he gets caught in the pocket.
He didn't give up too many sacks. So I think they've kind of relaxed to that point. But you can't get – they're going to beat some teams in the playoff, and you're not going to be able to play that game because they're going to be able to put a spy on you. That's right. And they're going to put a quarterback in their pocket. So I think they're going to definitely have to work on that. And, of course, none of us know, you know, other than the fact that Ty Simpson's an outstanding athlete, and, you know, he's done very well this year.
I mean, what, he's only thrown one pick or something like that. That's right. For the last 27 passes or 27, two or three touchdowns. So that's a big number, you know, particularly for this time of the year. So I don't know whether he can correct it right now, but I just – I think that they've got a system there. They win it, win it, and they're going to just kind of hang on until they get to the – you know, get maybe to the SEC championship game that they have to do a few things.
But, you know, it depends on who they're going to play. They're probably going to play Georgia if that be the case. And, of course, we've got Texas A&M in here in the Bigsville, and I don't think we discard them right now from making it to Atlanta. So, but, you know, who is it? Is it going to be Alabama or is it going to be Georgia? You know, to me, that looks like the only possibilities right now. And I was talking to some other guys earlier this morning where they actually think that if you're playing at the SEC championship game and you've got two losses, the loser will end up with three.
They may get a chance to go, too. You know, I've heard that argument all around, but if they use the street to schedule, without a doubt, I think that would work. But they've lip-serviced street to schedule guys for 15 years in those different committees they've had due to the different processes. And rarely do they ever go. They'll drop down and take, you know, take a power five or a power four or whatever some of those smaller schools are just to distribute the wealth more than anything else.
So, I think we've got, you know, a couple or three weeks coming up. It's going to be really good. I love the matchup we've got this weekend coming up. I think it's going to be really outstanding. Quickly, Max, who do you like in the Bama-Oklahoma game? I think Alabama will win it, but I think the line is, what, at six, five or six or something like that. It started there. It was 14 in the summer, went to seven. It opened at seven. It's now six and a half, Bama.
[31:29] Right. I thought it would come down. And, you know, I think a lot to do is going to have to do with Oklahoma's quarterback situation. You know, I know if I was coaching defense, my hat would be on that hand every snap he took. I'd have somebody assigned to put my hat right on that hand so he couldn't throw it very well. But he's a good runner. But you spy him, you know, you take one of those linebackers, you just put him in his face, and that's the way you slow it down.
So, I don't know. I think it's going to be a really good football game. Alabama should win the football game. It's in Tuscaloosa. So, I like that opportunity for them. Then you've got Texas going to Athens. I think that will be an outstanding ball game. Texas just has not. Georgia played a very vanilla ball game against Mississippi State this weekend. They did that on purpose because they didn't want to tape, you know, that next tape to go to Texas. They didn't think that you. Look for some new recalls.
Kerber will have some new recalls, particularly on the defensive side for Texas. And I look forward to come after Arch Bennett and Arch after Rudd for his life most of the afternoon. Max, is there any way in the world you could look at this Auburn-Vandy game? Auburn jumps out 17-3. And once again, I give Pavia and Vanderbilt credit. They come back, get it into overtime, and then win it in overtime. But Ashton Daniels throws for 353 yards, 89 yards rushing. And, of course, all of the Sunday postgame was, Hugh Freeze, what in the world were you thinking here, not being able to open up this offense, which I give Auburn credit for that.
They certainly looked a lot better when Daniels at quarterback. But, Max, what an indictment on Hugh Freeze. You turn around literally the next game, they score 38 points and gain 500 yards. Yep. Well, you know, I think there was some flaws in there when they hired him. I don't know why I've said that on y'all's show or not, but I just questioned. I've tracked his record since he left Ole Miss. I've tracked it while he was at Ole Miss. Yep. You know, the W-0's starting to line up over there with all kinds of, not only over the field problems he had with some players, but also he had some off the field problems in his own life.
So, if you go back and remember when he went to Liberty, I hate to say it, he didn't have a word player that was a quarterback that transferred to Auburn. That's what worded the games up there. So, I don't know. I think the depth, I think the depth of the SEC may be overwhelmed. I don't, that's hard to say, but his one-loss record warranted in the eyes of the people that hired him at Auburn. They certainly expected more out of it than that. But then I look at this ballgame in light of what you just said, Brittany.
The fact is, is you remember that was a defensive, that was a defensive coordinator at Auburn calling, you know, calling the plays. That's right. You know, he pulled something out of the hat to get that done. But you know what? They didn't win the ballgame. You know, it's just another thing that I heard Coach Freese say in one of his press conferences that Auburn, it appears, they've got to learn how to win more than they can. And I don't disagree with that at all. But sometimes, you know, they make some mistakes internally with their problem over there that I think they have to practice on it every day.
I don't know what to do with it, but they've got the role of guys making the decisions that they had. And I thought they could have corrected that with Coach Saban step down. They had a great chance to, you know, elevate their win-loss record at Bethany, by hiring somebody. But they had done that. I don't know. I don't have a clue who they're going to get down, to be honest with you. That's what I was going to ask you, Matt, because I won't put you on the spot with that, because back to what Lane and what you're hearing about Lane, that affects everything else.
Because let's face it, this kind of ends up being a domino effect. This guy does this, this affects this, this affects this, and so forth. In a perfect world, who, because let's face it, Auburn is a rare-sized shoe. You've got to have the perfect foot to go in there and win in that environment. If you were sitting here and took out the old Sears robot catalog for Christmas and said, ah, this is the guy, and especially back to your comments there about Summer Hall, I mean, you can't be distracted.
You've got to have laser beam focus. I don't care if you let your agents deal with all the other stuff. You talk chalk, but in a perfect world, two things on that, where does Arma go from here? Actually, three things. Where does LSU go from here? And we're just looking at three of the premier programs, and right now, they're nothing but a cluster. You know what? That is true. Well, you know, you start with the Auburn situation, and I think it's all three that have almost the same identity.
[36:36] It's not that guy that sits in the FA director's job that his job description describes what he should do in hiring a football coach. I think it's the outside forces in each one of those universities that have a say-so. And I think what's so weird about it, guys, is other than FSU with the governor involved, nobody knows who's making the call. I mean, it doesn't matter what John Cohen says. Guys, we've looked at, I promise you, you remember John was raised in Tuscaloosa. John's dad was a professor at Alabama.
So, I mean, he got a scholarship to Mississippi State, did well, was a player, did well in baseball, did okay at Mississippi State. And he gets the Auburn job, but I guarantee you, the internal work at Auburn is different than it was at Mississippi State. I guarantee you. And I wouldn't be surprised if he's sitting at his desk, somebody sticks their head in the door and makes some statement that John don't even know who he is, and that's the guy that writes one of the biggest checks that he's going to check.
Oh, yeah. And they just don't know, is my point is. So, answer your question, I'd go, you know, I'd make that last shot. I don't think Lee's giving from everything I've heard over the weekend, he hasn't actually signed the contract, but he's on his desk with all the bells and whistles and all the money he wants to make. And, of course, you know, in Mississippi, his contract can only be four years because the state law says, you know, no employee of the state can have a contract longer than the governor.
So, but they didn't tell the Louisiana people that. So, anyway, you know, Kiffin is the hottest thing out there. If he's taken out of the, you know, out of the equation, I don't know where they go. I'll just be honest with you. You know, the other big names are out there, but those other guys were fired for a reason. You know, to me, if Auburn's got to kind of step back and take maybe a second tier, go find a coordinator somewhere on a very successful program.
And, see if you can encourage him to come and give him, you know, a three-year contract with a possibility of going to five, but has to be evaluated every year. Don't get stuck with some big payoff and payout that you've got to do like they have the last three or four coaches that Auburn's made mistakes on. So, you know, that decision can be made, but I don't know right now that the people at Auburn that make those decisions are able to make that kind of decision.
Maybe that's why John Cohen stepped up and said, hey, I'm going to make the decision. Because there was so much confusion going on inside. That was the only way I could read that. So, you know, we've got a season to finish up. And I guess by Christmas we'll all know where the coaches will be. Max, you're right about that. I do keep hearing Drink With in play for the Florida job. We'll see. Max, has anybody done a better job in the last two weeks of saving his job than Mark Stoops at Kentucky?
He beats Auburn and gets Hugh Freeze fired. They embarrass Florida, and we know that obviously it's not a very good team right now. They play Tennessee Tech. People laughing about that, Max. Tennessee Tech's 10-0. They won 15 consecutive games. Then they've got Vandy in Louisville. But, Max, has Mark Stoops saved his job this week? Yes, see, he could very well have. He could very well have. I think if Mark Stoops want to retire, I mean, I think that's what he'll push him. I don't think it's going to be his with-loss record.
I really don't. He's been there so long, and he's really tied to the Kroger group. If you go, you know, if you ride around that campus, there's not many things that have Kroger written on it, and I'm sure you know. You know, he makes about $11 billion a year now. So, he's right at the top, you know, as far as coaches being paid. I think it'll be his decision. And then, you know, what, what, 60 maybe? He'd probably get ready to set it aside anyway. So, I think the rumor early on for this early part of the season was just that, that, you know, they were going to definitely make a change.
I think it's going to be up to him to do it, though, particularly if he can win one or two of these games at the end. You know, I think his record will justify him staying there. He's had his worst record today, I think, in other years that nobody ever thought about firing him. So, I think this will be the same thing. Absolutely. Max, we appreciate you staying on with us a little longer. Our 2035 guests had council at the last minute, but I can't think of a better way to begin Monday than talking to you.
We appreciate the coaching updates. Boy, that is going to be hot and heavy even more in the next couple weeks. But have a great week. It was snowing in most of the shows earlier, Max. And as Harold said, it'll be 70 degrees here by Friday. Listen, have a great day and a great week. Let's do this again next Monday. I'll be glad to be with you guys. Thank you so much. Y'all have a good week. Hey, Max, you do the same. There you have it. The one, the only, Max Al.

He's a former assistant with a guy named Nick Saban in Alabama, offensive coordinator there, one of the NFL, Buffalo, developed Josh Allen. New York Giants says he's our man.
They bring him down to be the top giant in New York. And moments ago, he was shown the door, the pink slip. My, oh, my, how things have changed. He was the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year. In the world of sports, it ain't what you've done. It's what you've done lately, BB. Harold, he went 9-7 in 2022 and seemed to be one of the hottest young coaches in the game. And since then, he's gone 20, 40, and 1. Yes, there was a tie. The Giants currently this year are 2-8, 0-4 on the road when leading by 10 or more points.
And the Giants just finally lost patience with him. Yeah, they just came up short in the fourth quarter yesterday in a kind of flurry, if you will, Flurryville there in Chicago against the Bears. So, Ryan Dable out as the top giant there in New York. BB, it's the Monday after. Your thoughts? I mean, you've got to feel for a guy like Ty Stempsson. To me, he's a very sensitive guy. If I'm a coach, that's a good thing. It's a bad thing because in this day and time, we see so many of these kids feeling privileged.
If I have a good game, okay. If I have a bad game, that's okay. I still get paid. I think Ty Stempsson's out of the old school. He wants to go out regardless of what he's being paid with NIL money. He sets the bar high. And right now, we don't know the kid, but it appears that he is really pressing because Alabama just cannot give him any help with a running game. Well, I think there are two issues there. And I've listened to this Saturday night after the game from quite a few people.
Alabama has solid running backs. They don't have elite running backs. Jim Miller is a better receiver than he is a runner. And several people told me after the game, and again, I'm not trying to criticize the young man. He doesn't have the elite vision to find the holes that a lot of running backs do. Now, Alabama is bringing one in with Crowell next year from Jackson. And then you've still got Deer, who is not playing for the simple reason. He's not picking up the blitz in practice.
And he's still learning the game. Daniel Hill is a good bank between tackles, and I think he will get better. The offensive line, he's got some deficiencies, too. We've talked about that. But once again, Adam Spencer mentioned it. When Alabama gets in the postseason, and they will, they can be facing a lot of teams that if you can make a team one-dimensional and Ty Simpson get pressure on him, Alabama's got to be able to run. I don't expect this team, Harold, to run for 150 yards. Their offense is not set up to do that.
But if they could run for 120, it would help Ty Simpson immensely. Well, here's the bottom line. I mean, B.B., let's face it. You're coming up with just a handful of games to go. Life is all about this. If this door is closed, is it too much to ask, how am I going to sit here and either open this door or go to another door? Because if I keep knocking the same way, I'm going to rub the skin off my knuckles. What I'm trying to say is, if you know that, and the coach has got to know it better than we do.
They're there every day. So what I'm trying to get at is, what's the B plan? Obviously, running off tackle and getting one or two yards and putting Ty Simpson in second and long situations because the opposing defense is just going to fold their ears and put pressure on him. Again, back to the original point, if this is not working, what do you do here realistically? Can you do just sweeps? I mean, sure to the goodness, there's more than one page in the playbook when it comes to that part of the game.
Well, and they've utilized screen passes. One of the things as far as running the ball is getting hit with more of a tight end. What was really frustrating to fans was, on one of the early drives, Alabama had third and one, got stuffed. Yeah. In fact, I think Ty Simpson had a quarterback sneak. Then they went for it on fourth and one and got stuffed again. A yard. If you can't make a frigging yard, as I heard Saturday night, you've got an issue there. Now, they've got what they call extended handoffs with passes behind the line of scrimmage, screens.
[52:24] But, Harold, they need to do, to me, more stretch runs to the outside. They seem to have more success with that. Danny Lewis, who did not play again Saturday night or played Barry DeLewis, seems to really help them in the blocking scheme. Josh Cuavers, who I think is one of the most underrated players on the entire team, who had a tremendous catch and run. That may have been Ty Simpson's best pass to the game when he hit him on the sidelines. But, again, Ryan Grubb is going to have to scheme for this.
But, there's no question that Alabama's got to improve the run game to some degree. More on the tide. Also, the Auburn Tigers, the rest of the SEC, and UNA straight ahead. Along, we're checking in with the man who's been there and done that. Who knows the answer better than the man who's been in the trenches at Bama. Britt did take part in a late-night voting session on Sunday night in the Senate, where eight Senate Democrats joined the Republicans in passing a continuing resolution which approves current government spending levels so as to keep the government operating. The CR must now go back to the U.S. House for a vote there, then on to the president's desk for approval before the government will be officially reopened.
[57:28] The approved deal only goes until January 30th of 2026. That is the next deadline for Congress to work and pass the nine out of 12 remaining spending bills. Britt says that she's working to get this latest CR over the finish line. However, Democrat Congresswoman Terry Sewell from Alabama, who is over in the U.S. House, is vowing to vote against the CR when it gets there because she says there's no deal reached in the Senate to continue subsidies for Obamacare. I'll be back with more Alabama stories after this.

Harold, unfortunately, the Hee Haw theme song comes into play here again. If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. UNA loses to West Georgia 24-17.
It was kind of a tell to two halves. UNA played well in the first half. One of the reasons for that is Destin Wade played very well for the time that he was in. 5-7, 137, added 31 yards rushing. But he got hurt late in the second quarter. True freshman John Austin Wood came in and went 4 of 11 passing. Obviously, not a lot of experience there. Fletcher called a 75-yard touchdown pass for UNA. The defense played well. Tango McCauley, h***, is that again a name for a defensive player?
[1:02:42] Southampton, Marcus Robinson combined for 25 tackles. In fact, Tango had a career-high 10. UNA played well. Ian Bashan had a 43-yard field goal. And Adam Wartford, the punter, punted nine times for 49 yards. Any college coach would like that. UNA kept the penalties down. But unfortunately, Harold, West Georgia made more plays in the second half. The Lions hit the road again to play number six, Tarlington State, on Saturday. But again, UNA is improving. And if Destin Wade would have played the entire game, I think they would have won the game.
But he got hurt late in the second quarter. The UNA offense struggled in the second half. And West Georgia now seven and three on the season. The thing is, UNA, and I know, obviously, we have Coach Jeremy on all the time. He's not going to make any excuses. So you take the cards you're dealt and deal with them. But here's what's interesting about it, B.B. Earlier this year, the opponent in Alabama is going to be facing this weekend is Oklahoma. Oklahoma kicked off a season against Illinois State.
Illinois State played UNA about two or three weeks after that game. Oklahoma scored 35 points on Illinois State. UNA scored 36 points. They lost. But UNA scored more points against a common opponent than did Oklahoma. Now, what does that mean? You can read into that what you want. But what it does, it illustrates just how tough this schedule has been for UNA. Now, you combine that with injuries, and it has been, as we said, heartbreak city for this team this season. Well, and, Harold, three or four narrow losses, losing in overtime a couple weeks ago.
And, again, it was there. But it just – it's very unfortunate. UNA's record right now, Harold, instead of two and eight, one and five, they win two or three of those games. It looks a lot better. Yeah, and something to build on, too. So we'll see. Mimi, we want to talk more about – speaking of Oklahoma, that, and Alabama in a second. But your thoughts about Auburn. Did DJ Durkin change hats? Did he go from the defensive coordinator to the offensive coordinator? And if he did, you're talking about a very interesting game and scenario for Durkin.
Obviously, you would think coming into that game that the defense would be able to check Vanderbilt. But you think the offense may be struggling because of where they've been so far this season. And, to me, that was one of the more intriguing games of the season. Harold, I give DJ Durkin and his staff, and particularly Derek Nix, a lot of credit. They literally put this together on the fly. Yeah. As far as Hugh Freeze being fired after losing 10-3 to Kentucky, Auburn gained 563 yards against a very respectable Vanderbilt team.
I ranked him. Ashton Daniels, and I know Auburn fans are shrugging their shoulders and say, why in the world was this kid not playing earlier in the year? Ashton Daniels threw for 353. And, oh, by the way, Harold, you know, I guess you scratch your hand why Cam Coleman was not being thrown to more. And, Eric Singleton, Cam Coleman, if you throw it within five yards of him, he's going to catch the ball with one hand. But Ashton Daniels not only passed for 353 and two touchdowns, but I thought Cam Vanderbilt off balance running the ball.
A lot of times he would drop back to pass, and then he would just climb up in the pocket and keep running and get a first down. Ran for 89 yards. Auburn ran the ball very well, too. Now, they had 12 penalties for 91 yards, and in close games, that's going to bite you in the bud at some point. But, my goodness, what a difference offensively. And, again, Harold, Pavia, when we talked about this earlier, Pavia's not 6'5 and 250 and ready to play in the NFL. That kid has so much monster.
He's just absolutely incredible. And I've talked about him for years. Auburn's ahead 17-3. He brings them back to go ahead, I believe, 20-17 in the game seesaw from there. But, once again, you knew if Vandy had the ball last, he was going to win. Yeah. I shook hands with John Stallworth. I always thought I had big hands. I shook hands with Stallworth. Now, of course, got four Super Bowl rings with the Steelers. Now, the NFL Hall of Fame. Like a peanut in a palm patch. He had huge hands.
I think that's the deal with Cam Coleman. BB, to me, he's one of the best receivers. You wouldn't know it by the stats because of the scheme so far, but he is an outstanding receiver. The question I'm asking is, and I thought Dirk, and even he verbalized it over the weekend. You know that when you are in this situation, it's almost like, remember the old show, Wild Kingdom with the wolves, the circle, the prey? How many of those coaches are out there circling the prey right now looking at a guy like Coleman and saying, come on down here and we'll make you a star and pay you well, son?
[1:08:06] Well, Kevin Scarbinsky had an interesting article on annual.com. Our buddy that we've talked to for years said, don't get excited. Yes, it was a great performance, but don't hire D.J. Durkin tomorrow. Let's see how this plays out. Auburn's got a bye week, and then they play an 8-1 Mercer. It's like I was talking about Tennessee Tech earlier. They're 10-0 about to face Kentucky. Mercer's had a good – listen, you can't overlook teams like that. I know it's FCFs, but if you get caught looking ahead to the next opponent, but we'll see.
Certainly, if he upsets Alabama, he would get a serious look. We'll see. Again, Max Howell telling us, according to his sources, that Lane Kiffin may be staying in Oxford, and if that does, that is really going to change the postseason as far as coaching hires. And the Auburn defense did not play one of their better games in the year, but don't give a lot of credit to Paul B.O., Stowers, Alexander, and that Vandy offense. Back to Lane, are you surprised by that news? I'm not terribly surprised because everybody – I think most people say it's all about money.
People make decisions all about money. Personally, to me, that's the craziest decision to make in your life. What is more important, money or happiness and peace of mind? If money's that important, then to me it's no-brainer. You go to a Florida or some of these reported contracts, it's a no-brainer. But if you're making a good living in Oxford, Mississippi, and you've got what you want, which Lane's got total control of that program. You saw his stand over the weekend. There's a young couple over there. The dude did the thing with the TikTok stuff they got going on, got down on the knee and all that stuff.
And who crashed it? Lane came over there right before the game and crashed it. He can get away with anything he wants. Lane can be Lane as far as he is in Oxford. He goes somewhere else. He's going to sit here and be politically correct. And Lane, that shoe doesn't fit his foot. He can't sit here and be a yes man. That's just not who Lane Kiffin is. He's shown it over the years. You've got to let Lane be Lane, and he'll get the job done for you.
Some people are that way. Your thoughts, are you surprised, and how does that impact all these openings? Because let's face it, it's a domino world out there when it comes to replacing these guys. Well, John Ferrari was on our bud out of Jacksonville, Florida, and he has told me repeatedly that Lane Kiffin was the number one prospect for the Gators. In fact, there is reportedly a $13.5 million for six years with $81 million guaranteed. It's on Jimmy Saxton's desk, who is Lane Kiffin's agent, and we'll see where this goes.
But, Harold, the one thing about Kiffin I've heard in the last couple of years, he's matured. And someone told me for the first time in his life, he's actually happy somewhere. Now, I think he's been satisfied, but he's never been truly happy. His family's there now, all around him. He seems to really be enjoying himself. And Max made a great point. He is now, he knows who he's working with. He's satisfied with the Ole Miss administration. They're going to pay him a lot of money. If this was two years ago, I'd have told you he was going to Florida.
But now, right now, I know Max is not the only one I've heard that from this weekend. No, it would not surprise me if he stays in Oxford. We'll see how that plays out. VB, your thoughts. Let's talk a little bit about this Oklahoma-Alabama game. Because everybody's talking about Oklahoma's defense. And let's face it, it's pretty doggone good. Venables has a reputation. It's going to be interesting to see this Alabama line. If they have the problems they've had to date, and they take on Venables front, to me, and we're going to get into this with Redfish Barger here in a second, you can give us more.
That, to me, is going to be a very interesting matchup. But here's Oklahoma, how they built some of these numbers. They faced Illinois State. They scored three on them. Michigan scored 13. Now, they won both those games. Temple scored three. Auburn, when Hugh Freeze was calling a shot, scored 17. Kent State, hello, Kent State, that's Nick Saban's old school there. Three dead in Ohio. They shut Kent State out. Texas beat Oklahoma. Texas scored 23. South Carolina, they're down. They scored seven. Ole Miss, a whopping 34. And Tennessee, 27. You see what I'm trying to say here.
Yes, Oklahoma has good stats. But to me, you've got to do an apples-to-apples thing. When you face some of these stats, you're going to be against Kent State. South Carolina's down. Auburn, they were down. Temple, they was Temple. Illinois State's Illinois State. BB, objectively, what do you see this weekend when Alabama's got the ball and trying to keep this Venables front from hurting Ty Simpson? Well, and remember, they're coming off a bye week, Harold. So they've had a lot of time to scout Alabama. They have 33 sacks, which ranks fourth in the country.
[1:13:24] They don't force a lot of turnovers. In fact, they're 117th. Alabama's 18th in the country. They've done a very good job with that. Mason Thomas is one of the best defensive linemen. Now, he tweaked his hamstring when he had a scoop and score against Tennessee. He's one of the best players. But in fact, he's got six and a half sacks. Oklahoma really is a good team. Harold, I think John Mateer, the bye week, has allowed Mateer to probably get completely healthy with his hand. And they're not going to blow you away offensively, but he can hurt you when he drops back and the pocket collapses and he runs for a first down, which has been an issue for Alabama, even going back to the Nick Saban days.
But there's no question that this is going to be a very tough game for Alabama. Everybody remembers, I'm sure the revenge thing is going to play a part of this too. But, and you're right, the schedule has been a little sketchy, but their defense is elite. More on that in a moment from now with Redfish Barger. Quickly, in case you missed, it's staying with Bama, but basketball. BB, the latest pullout. AP says, we're going to reward you. We're going to jump your seven spots from 15 to eight because you knocked off at the time number five, St. John's.
Basically, a St. John's home game there at the Madison Square Garden. And doing it convincingly, not only did they win, BB, they faced adversity. They had a big lead, lost it, regained it down the stretch. And now they're going to be quickly taking on number two, Purdue. Purdue was number one. And Houston leapfrogged them in their day's poll. The Boilermakers now number two. But, BB, first things first. If you watch a lot of Bama basketball over the years, these starting guards for Alabama, I don't know.
We don't have much of a sample, but based on the sample so far, so good. I'll tell you one thing. If they can keep these guards healthy, Harold. Reitzel came back and hit some big shots. Aiden Holloway hit some big shots. And the guards, in my opinion, are the best in the SEC. They've got a lot more depth. We'll see. The kid from Miami is not even going to play until the SEC. He's another guard forward. I was impressed with the rebounding. Bo Bowen got a lot of rebounds.
In fact, Nate Oates called him out earlier in the week. Very deep Alabama team. If he can keep this team healthy and they can shoot the ball, there's no question. Let's don't get ahead of ourselves. But this is potentially another lead eight Final Four team. And the thing is, you mentioned now, it looks like if one thing they've improved on, it is with the tall Giants trying to clean up the board. Alabama under Nate Oates, you're always going to get the threes. The problem has been, can you sit here and get more than one shot?
And so far, so good in that front as well. Coming up, as we mentioned a little bit later on, I'm going to be going more in depth with Alabama football with the Redfish Barger. But first, Big Orange Talk with the V-Man, Vince Roaroff, 99-1. I'm back. It's a daily update on Bama sports and it's brought to you by Guthrie's, America's original chicken finger restaurant and a proud partner of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Visit online at Guthrie'sChicken.com. Hello again, everybody. I'm Roger Hoover. After Alabama's 20-9 win on LSU on Saturday, head coach Kalen DeBoer met with the media. It's always good to get a W. Definitely not satisfied with the way we played at times. Made enough plays to win. But certainly got to continue to prove, got to get back to work tomorrow. Our guys know that. Proud of the defense, holding them to field goals for red zone attempts and walking away with nine points. It's a great job by those guys.
You know, penalties, like what I see there. And then, you know, turnover won the turnover battle. So, obviously, a big play there at the end. And, you know, just there's plays out there we got to make. And that will help a lot of our offense. And defensively, you know, I thought we fought for four quarters. And so, quietly just going out there, taking care of business and really locked in on anything. I'll have more in a moment. This year, we honor the most important anniversary ever.
An event that reshapes civilization as we know it. A day that would lead to something so flawless that nothing could ever really compare. People have tried to match it, but have failed. This year, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Guthrie's. The home of the original chicken finger. Just talking about it gets me all choked up. And hungry for a chicken finger. Guthrie's. Welcome back in. And the words of the king, Richard Petty, it's good to have a pit stop in life. I think Vince Roth would agree with that. Busy there at 99.1, the Sports Animal in Knoxville and the Vol Radio Network. B-Man, we know that you had an off week, and we know the lady in your life loves you for that.
Her name is Daphne. Welcome in. How are you? Good, gentlemen. How are we doing? Hey, buddy. The question is, how are you doing? It feels weird. After you get going 90 miles an hour, then you have an off week. It kind of feels weird sometimes, but you appreciate it, I'm sure, at the same time, B-Man. Yeah. You know, as we get older, we plan surgeries during open weeks. And when it is. Is that right? And it's not a lot of difference, according to some people, between the two, right?
Exactly. Hopefully, I'm done with all that. I had my second hip replacement surgery, so it went incredibly smoothly. You know, I can say this now that it's over, but it was pretty amazing. I had a 7 a.m. surgery, and I was out of the hospital at 12.15. Wow. So, that's how smooth it went. So, thankful for that. You know, rehab, obviously, is its own challenge, but going well so far. I'm thankful I'm on the other side of it. So, your surgeon must be a Tennessee fan, right, B-Man?
[1:23:55] Is that the question you always ask? Are you a Tennessee fan before you go into that type thing, before you take that knife out? Well, most importantly, he listens to our show. There you go! There you go! It never hurts. I mean, let's talk about this team. Obviously, Tennessee, what did they learn? What did they try to fix as they come back and get ready for the balance of their season? Well, you know, there's always the health aspect of it, right? You know, you want to get guys that have been banged up and bruised and all that feeling better and closer to 100%.
I don't know that you're going to get that, you know, in late in the season. That's one. I don't know who it opens up in terms of availability. I mean, there's still hopes that Jermon McCoy might be able to play. It's hard. I mean, supposedly, he really wants to play and get back. I think, you know, for me, I would be stunned if his draft stock isn't impacted by him not playing this year. He's a projected first-round pick. Now, you look at some mock drafts, and for some, it hasn't changed anything.
But I find that hard to believe. I think he's going to need to show that he can play, show that he's explosive, or else, you know, organizations are going to be wondering about him. And you're not going to be able to have those answers just through the off-season workouts, workout circuit. So, you know, if they get Jermon McCoy back, that won't be a lot to be accomplished. You know, the tackling, obviously, is another thing that they'll need to get better at. They're better in the first half against Oklahoma, but then the run game, especially the QB run game, gave them some issues last week in the second half.
And the other thing, and they won't, they're not going to find this out, you know, against New Mexico State, is are they going to, you know, to protect the quarterback better? Because they have protected Joey Aguilar for a good part of the year, but then the sacks have really been up the last couple of games. I know one thing, they can't end up doing anything other than blowing New Mexico State out early. So they can play a lot of people in the game. So you're not adding more unnecessary snaps to a team that has some players that have, you know, north of 500 snaps already on the year.
And you're going to need them to be as fresh as possible for your, for two of your biggest rivals in Florida and Vanderbilt to close out the regular season. The Tennessee's a 39 and a half point favorite over New Mexico State, who has allowed 270. 27 yards passing and 10 touchdowns in the last three games. I listen to Tennessee fans on the radio in this six and three season. I believe me, I certainly understand why they're disappointed. They've lost to number four, Alabama and Tuscaloosa, number five, Georgia in overtime, and number 11, Oklahoma.
V, I would not exactly call that a disaster of season. No, you know, and you, you know, how, how it goes as you go along, then the expectations get adjusted and are maybe different than what they were realistically going into the season. And so, um, because there were so many question marks about the quarterback position and, and the passing game, I think it was tempered. And then you start throwing the ball all over the place and throwing it on everybody and you miss out on an opportunity to beat Georgia at home, a team you've been chasing and haven't been able to beat.
Um, you know, then, then you're like, all right, why did that get away from us? We were right there and now you've seen some other things break down since then. So it gets elevated and then you end up, you know, about where you kind of were supposed to be, but the, the journey took you to the disappointment stage, uh, during the, that ride. So that, that's why, uh, and, and, you know, you guys know this, having covered the, uh, the sport and athletics in this conference, as long as you have, um, you know, fans are, um, when, when they, you start looking at, uh, at a team or looking at your team, it's how you get to that point.
It's not just being at that point. And, uh, and then the, the vocal, uh, percentage that's out there doesn't always represent the entire fan base just because some people call in the sports shows or posts on social media that they're, they're done with Josh Heupel does not mean that most of the fan base believes that, uh, that's just the, the vocal minority that, that has a loud voice when they have opportunities to express themselves. So, so that, that's what's happening. Most people are fully appreciative of what he's done and where he's taken the program from.
[1:29:20] Yeah. The grass, as they say, is not always greener on the other side. Uh, V-Man, 99-1, the sports animal in Knoxville, switching gears, latest poll out. Tennessee, uh, if I'm looking at it right, number 20, put another way, fourth in the, from the SEC, fourth team from the SEC to make the top 20. Your thoughts about this big orange basketball team? Yeah. Um, I think they were a little bit better against Northern Kentucky than they were in the opener against Mercer. Um, I, I think it's clear that their two best players are five-star true freshman, Nate Ament, who, you know, could be, you know, a top three pick in next year's NBA draft.
He's that talented. He's just so different than anything Tennessee has ever had, um, especially under Rick Barnes. And then Jacoby Gillespie, the East Tennessee kid transfer from Maryland. And he was more efficient in, in game two. Um, you know, he, he, teams are, are game planning for him because they know how dynamic and dangerous he can be under, you know, Rick Barnes' system in offense. So, um, you know, both of them still have growing and improving to do, but in just feeling comfortable. But the, the fact that Nate Ament has already become assertive and aggressive and, and now, you know, in game two, we saw him pass the ball a little bit more, not just put his head down and determine he's going to shoot.
I mean, he can do absolutely everything on the basketball court and, and the Duke game, it was a high volume shooting and you could tell he, you know, uh, just was a little bit off, but man, when he is relaxed and getting everyone around him involved, he's going to be, both of them, I think are going to look like, uh, two of the better players in the SEC. They're that good at the top and they're pretty deep in the front court as well. Vee, but, uh, in a couple of minutes, what does Alabama need to do?
You've seen them up close. What does Alabama need to do to beat Oklahoma? Protect the quarterback. Yep. That's it. Oklahoma gets after the QB. They got to Joey Aguilar. And even when they don't get there, they're putting pressure on you. Brent Venables has different looks every game, uh, from what you've seen on tape. Uh, Tennessee's wide receivers also weren't open as regularly as before. So Ty Simpson isn't going to see those wide open guys. I don't think, uh, as frequently as he's used to seeing. So what does he do?
Does that mean he's going to tuck it and run? Does that mean he's going to throw it up and let his receivers go get it? Is he going to be able to execute those, uh, tight window throws? Um, and it's tough to beat them if you're not balanced. So I'm guessing they're probably going to have to do a little bit of something with the run game as well. But I would start with those two things. Absolutely. Listen, we are, we are delighted to hear that the recovery for the second hip surgery has gone very, very well.
Um, wish you all the luck in the world with that. God bless you, brother. Where can we get online and get these good stuff? Yeah. Appreciate it. Uh, on, uh, all the socials, same handle, Vince sports, V I N C E sports. And then, uh, back doing TV for a preview of Tennessee and New Mexico state on the local ABC station, sports source, uh, preview kickoff show. Uh, that will be on sports source kickoff on, uh, on YouTube. Appreciate you guys. Love you guys. Appreciate it.

The score. Now, back with Boomo Bugg on 93.9 The Score. Welcome back in. It is always a pleasure for us to say hello to William Redfish Barger, former University of Alabama offensive lineman and now co-host of BAMS Radio. William, welcome in. How are you? Doing good, guys. Hope y'all are staying out of the snow up there in North Alabama. Yep. Well, we're in line to get milk and bread. My joke on that, William, is I don't eat milk and or drink milk and eat bread when it's not snowing.
So I guess you're supposed to if it is. But let me ask you this, William. Obviously, as a fan, it's always fun if you're an Alabama fan to knock off LSU. But what's it like to be a fan now and a player then to knock off LSU this weekend? Well, you know, when I was at Alabama, LSU was kind of going through a down cycle. You know, Mike Archer had inherited a bunch of good players and, you know, a couple good teams from Bill Arnsbarger. And, you know, once those players ran out, he just fell off a cliff.
[1:39:55] So, you know, I don't think – I think maybe my senior year we lost to him and we had to play David Palmer and maybe one of the student managers, a quarterback, all of our quarterbacks, disappeared on us with injuries. But I know that was the only game we lost to him. And actually, when the SEC realigned in 92 and brought South Carolina and Arkansas into the league, we had to play down in Baton Rouge two years in a row. So, well, you know, they were day games and not the same atmosphere as what you see today when the lights go down in the swamp down there.
William, you mentioned to us last week about how much respect you have for Brent Venables in his defense. Mason Thomas, one of the best defensive ends in the country. I think he's got six and a half sacks. William, what does he do? But we talked to Vince Ferrara, who Tennessee – fall of Tennessee. And, of course, he watched Oklahoma. He said Alabama's got to be more balanced. Ty Simpson's got to throw in two tight windows. And they throw the receivers off the routes. What does Brent Venables do defensively that you like?
Well, I mean, I think the biggest thing that he does is he puts a priority on the line of scrimmage. You know, you're always going to see, you know, them do some exotic stuff with their D-line and their inside linebackers. And, you know, they got the edge rusher that you mentioned. Actually, both edge rushers are pretty salty. And, you know, they got one defensive tackle that's got more in his toolbox than just a bull rush, too. But, you know, they do a lot of stunning. They do a lot of twists.
They do a lot of double, you know, A-gap blitzes with the inside linebackers. And so you just – it's almost like you never get to catch your breath. They stun a lot. They shift before the snap. And it's just been, you know, a hallmark of what he's done as a defensive coordinator, you know, going back to when he started, you know, at Oklahoma under Bob Stoops back in the 90s. So, I mean, he's had a long time to hone his craft. And, you know, one of the things, though, is if you can survive the firework up front is, you know, he tends to have a back end.
Now, this wasn't the case when he was at Clemson. But, you know, currently, I mean, I think his secondary can be had if you can survive what he does to you up front. So, you know, there's going to be some opportunities there. I'm not saying Ryan Grubb doesn't need to have a plan in his back pocket for some screens and some draws and some stuff to slow them down with those games up front. But there'll be some opportunities to make plays, you know, down the field in the passing game.
And, you know, based on what I've seen, h***, I don't know if Alabama's best, you know, line of attack going forward isn't to throw the ball, you know, first, second, and third down. Just go ahead and call a spade a spade and just give it up, you know. Amen. Things like this offense does best with, you know, 12 to 15-yard balls down the middle of the field. So, you know, I'm a big fan of, you know, if you're good at it, do it until somebody makes you do something different.
William Redfish, Marge, let me ask you about that. Alabama knows what to do. The question is, can they do it? And your thoughts about the – let's face it, Ryan Grubb is a whiz in the red zone, two-point conversions, fourth down plays. But on first down, I'm sure a lot of folks, and most of all you because you've been there and done that, what would it be like if you kind of changed things up than trying to run inside on first down? Because let's face it, history has shown Ty Simpson's been tasked with basically second and loan just about every possession.
What would you do differently on first down, William? Well, I'd try and probably not be as predictable as he's become. Thank you. You know, nobody's paying me $2 million a year to make that call. But if they were, I would want to do something different. But, yeah, I mean, you know, maybe do a – you know, and I think that's something that you're – hopefully you'll see Saturday is, you know, kind of like what you saw Alex Atkins do with Nussmeyer there in the first quarter. You know, I think they need to roll the pocket, move it, you know, give Ty the option.
H***, Ty was Alabama's best running back Saturday. Again. So give him – you know, give him a run pass option. You know, it's a real easy route tree when you do that. You know, it's one or two quick reads. And if they're both covered, tuck it and get what you can. But, you know, they've got to do something to keep Oklahoma off their pitch count. And, you know, whether that's getting them in a situation where you change the snap count and you catch them, you know, with the, you know, offsides penalties.
[1:45:18] You know, they're going to, you know, try everything in their playbook. And, you know, they've had two weeks to prepare for it. But, yeah, I mean, I just think, you know, it might help the consistency or maybe the beginning of a consistent running game, you know, if you weren't predictable about it. And, you know, and look, I know everybody, when they see this stuff happens, they immediately want to point to the fat guys up front. And that's just not the case, you know, all the time.
I've seen a lot of instances where the offensive line has done their job and, you know, our running backs have turned into Trent Richardson when he was with the Cleveland Browns and went blind. So, you know, they've got to have some vision. They've got to have some instincts to either be patient, wait on some creases or some cutback lanes or hit the gap that is available to them. And, you know, obviously the offensive line and the play caller in this instance, you know, they all share some culpability in the lack of a running game at this stage in the game.
Let me ask you this about the running game. Obviously, I think it's safe to say Dears is right off the farm. He's still learning the system how to block high school in Mississippi. You've got so much talent, you don't have to worry about that part of the game at this level you do. But where is Richard Young? This is a five-star coming out of high school, and you can't even find him on a milk carton. Yeah, you know, there was a lot of conversation after his injury last year that he lost a step.
And, you know, it had kind of, you know, gone into being kind of a one-cut running back. And, you know, that was kind of what made him special coming out of high school is he did have that extra gear. And, you know, I just think that, you know, they've got a guy that's got a little different gear there than Kevin Riley, and I don't know, you know, really what he's done to fall out of favor. You know, in September he was, you know, getting four-five targets either on the ground or in the air.
You know, in games. So, you know, maybe they can, you know, recycle him back up to the top. But, you know, I just think they've got to do something. You know, this is not really the front seven or the defensive mastermind, I don't think, to really expect to see it because they are so disruptive. And, you know, that's going to be a, you know, a premium is trying to eliminate the negative plays, the tackles for losses that Oklahoma's defensive line and front seven are going to try and create Saturday.
They do try and play a lot of their ball on your side of the line of scrimmage. William, this defense obviously has improved over the course of the season. I was reading two articles to where, quote, they only missed one tackle on defense by Red Morgan. Three forced fumbles, recovered two. Hill Green, who seems to be playing better every game. Bray Hubbard, Yonse Pierre, of course. Seven pressures from the guys Hubbard and Dajon Lee credited with pass breakups. And I know they had another run-fit bus, which seems to happen every game.
But this defense, again, that they're playing a lot of players. They're getting pressure on the quarterback. They've been turning the ball over, forcing turnovers the entire season. William, your thoughts on the development and improvement of this defense? Well, I think it's been incredible. And, you know, we've been talking about Bray Hubbard and, you know, some of these, you know, guys, you know, early in the season. I think what's really been impressive is, you know, Saturday, three out of your top four tacklers were your three inside linebackers.
That's right. Jefferson and Lawson. And I think the one name that you did mention that's been a big improvement that's led to a lot of this stuff. You know, since Red Morgan was inserted early in the Tennessee game to kind of slow their slot-wide receiver success down, you know, he's become a mainstay. And he's good in coverage. He's aggressive against the run. You know, obviously we're seeing, you know, probably a top-15 draft pick in the making emerging with the true freshman, Dajon Lee. I mean, you just can't coach that length and that speed.
And he's an aggressive tackler for, you know, a corner. So, you know, but to me, I think the four guys that have really kind of flown up from being just, you know, lost or, you know, maybe just things were moving too fast. Maybe one of them was still recovering from an injury. But Lawson, Jefferson, Hill Green, and Red Morgan, I think, is really what's made this defense kind of take it to the next level. And, you know, they're up to, you know, 13th in the country and points allowed per game now.
[1:50:22] And, you know, you saw that translate, you know, into three field goals with some really, you know, tough, tough circumstances to, you know, turn those things into field goals. You know, Pierre obviously created one himself with that 30-yard sack or whatever it was he had. But, you know, I looked out there one time in a critical situation that y'all touched on with playing a lot of players. And the whole second-team defensive line was on the field for a series of three or four downs, you know, inside the red zone.
And so when you get that type of production from backup players, you know, you're doing something right. And I think especially after the early season criticism, you know, I think Kane Womack deserves all the credit in the world. And certainly the players do as well for getting to where they're at today. To your point about Lee, one of the key breakups, the back of the end zone there, and that's a lot of pressure on a man with that kind of experience. So that kind of illustrates your point right there.
The future is so bright, he's got to wear shades. So, Redfish, this game opened with Bama back in the summer. The two touchdown 14-point favorites. It opened over the weekend at seven. It's down to six and a half. Redfish, what's going to happen Saturday night in Tuscaloosa? Well, you know, I think it's going to be an interesting matchup because both teams are kind of still fighting for where they want to go. You know, Oklahoma still has a chance to make the playoffs. You know, Alabama, you know, is fighting for a, you know, a berth in the SEC championship game and an SEC championship.
So, you know, there's a lot of stuff on the line here. You know, it's going to be, you know, an offensive guru and Kalen DeVore versus a defensive guru and Brent Venerables. And so, you know, you don't really like to see the offensive inefficiency that you've seen over the last two games, you know, going into this thing. But, you know, I've got all the confidence in the world and Kalen DeVore, but make no mistake about it. I'm a lot more concerned about this game Saturday than I was the LSU game.
Yeah, you mentioned that to us. By the way, tell us, where can we listen to BAM's radio with you and Thomas Watts and Drew DeArmond? I'm guessing you taped it yesterday or either today. Where can we get on radio and hear that? To be honest with you, I really don't know. I think there's a link on Twitter or something like that. You know, Thomas handles all that stuff. I just show up and do the recording on Sunday afternoon. There you go. I really don't know on the back end of it, to be honest with you.
Well, that's good because I listen to it quite often. Listen, we always enjoy the Monday visit with you, breaking it down and then previewing the next game. Have a great day and a great week, and hopefully we can do this again with you next Monday. Hey, sounds good, guys. I appreciate it. Absolutely. I hope we're all thawed out by Saturday night as well.
